Bir yerde bir şeyin var olduğunu söylerken There is ya da There are deriz. Türkçesi "... var" demektir:
- There is → tek bir şey için (one thing)There is a book on the table. (Masada bir kitap var.)
- There are → birden çok şey için (many things)There are three cats. (Üç kedi var.)
- Bir tane mi? → There is (There's). Birden çok mu? → There are.
- Odandaki eşyaları anlatmak için harika! There is a bed. There are two windows.
1. There is = Tek Şey (one thing)
Bir tane şey için There is kullanırız. Genelde yanında a ya da an vardır. Su, süt gibi sayamadığımız şeyler de (uncountable) There is alır:

- Tek şey mi? → There is. Sesli harfle başlarsa an: an apple, an egg.
- There is = There's (konuşurken kısaltırız).
2. There are = Çok Şey (two or more)
Birden çok şey için There are kullanırız. Yanında bir sayı (two, three...) ya da çoğul bir kelime (cats, books) olur. Çoğul kelimelerin sonunda -s vardır:

- Çok şey mi? → There are + çoğul (cats, pens, dogs).
- There are kısalmaz. "There're" yazmayız — hep There are.
3. some / any (biraz / birkaç)
Kaç tane olduğunu söylemeden "biraz, birkaç" demek için some ve any kullanırız. some olumlu cümlede, any ise soru ve olumsuzda gelir:

- Var diyorsak → some. Soruyorsak ya da yok diyorsak → any.
4. Yer Edatları (in, on, under, next to)
Bir şeyin nerede olduğunu söylemek için küçük yer kelimeleri kullanırız. Odandaki eşyaları anlatırken çok işine yararlar:

- Önce ne var (There is a book), sonra nerede (on the table) deriz.
5. Olumsuz ve Soru (isn't / aren't · Is there? / Are there?)
Yok demek için There isn't / There aren't deriz. Soru sorarken Is there...? / Are there...? ile başlarız:

- Tek şey → Is there...? Çok şey → Are there...? Soruda genelde any gelir.
6. Odaya Bakalım (In My Room)
İki çocuk bir odayı anlatıyor. Koyu yazılan kelimelere dikkat et ve iki kez oku:
- — Is there a bed in the room?Odada bir yatak var mı?
- — Yes, there is. And there is a big box next to the bed.Evet, var. Ve yatağın yanında büyük bir kutu var.
- — Are there any toys under the bed?Yatağın altında hiç oyuncak var mı?
- — Yes, there are. There are three cars and some blocks.Evet, var. Üç araba ve biraz blok var.
- — Is there a cat in the room?Odada bir kedi var mı?
- — No, there isn't. But there is a dog on the bed!Hayır, yok. Ama yatağın üstünde bir köpek var!
- "There are a book." ✗ → "There is a book." ✓ (tek şey → is).
- "There is two cats." ✗ → "There are two cats." ✓ (çok şey → are).
- "Are there some pens?" ✗ → "Are there any pens?" ✓ (soruda any).
