Şimdiki zamanda am / is / are kullanırız: "I am happy." Ama dün, geçen hafta ya da geçen tatil için geçmiş zamanı kullanırız. "am" ve "is" → was, "are" → were olur:
- I was at home yesterday.Dün evdeydim. (I → was)
- She was happy on her birthday.Doğum gününde mutluydu. (She → was)
- They were at the park.Onlar parktaydı. (They → were)
- Şimdi → am / is / are. Geçmiş → was / were.
- am, is → was (tekil). are → were (çoğul).
- Zaman kelimeleri: yesterday (dün), last week (geçen hafta).
1. was (I / He / She / It)
Tek bir kişi ya da şey için was kullanırız: I, he, she, it. Bu, "am" ve "is" kelimelerinin geçmişidir:

- I, he, she, it → her zaman was.

2. were (You / We / They)
Çoğul özneler ve you için were kullanırız. Bu, "are" kelimesinin geçmişidir:

4. wasn't / weren't (Olumsuz)
"Değildim / değildi" demek için sona not ekleriz: was not = wasn't, were not = weren't:

- was + not → wasn't. were + not → weren't.

5. Was ...? / Were ...? (Soru + Kısa Cevap)
Soru sormak için was ya da were kelimesini başa alırız. Kısa cevap da kolay:

- I, he, she, it → was; you, we, they → were. "Değil" için başa değil sona ekle: wasn't / weren't. Soruda Was / Were en başa gelir.
6. Yesterday (Mini Diyalog)
İki arkadaş dün ne yaptıklarını konuşuyor. Koyu kelimelere dikkat et ve iki kez oku:
- — Where were you yesterday? — I was at my grandma's house.— Dün neredeydin? — Büyükannemin evindeydim.
- — Was it fun? — Yes, it was! The cake was big.— Eğlenceli miydi? — Evet öyleydi! Pasta büyüktü.
- — Were your friends there? — Yes, they were. We were in the garden.— Arkadaşların orada mıydı? — Evet, oradaydılar. Bahçedeydik.
- — I wasn't at home. It wasn't boring at all!— Evde değildim. Hiç sıkıcı değildi!
- "They was happy" ✗ → "They were happy" ✓ (çoğulda were).
- "I were at home" ✗ → "I was at home" ✓ (I → was).
- "She weren't here" ✗ → "She wasn't here" ✓ (tekil olumsuz).

Okurken was ve were kelimelerini bul. Bunlar sana olayın geçmişte olduğunu ve kim/ne hakkında olduğunu söyler:

Hello! I am Lisa. Yesterday was my birthday! I was seven years old. I was very happy. My mum and dad were at home, and my friends were at my house too. It was a big party. It was a special day!
My birthday was on Sunday. The morning was bright and the sky was blue. My best friends were very kind and they were happy for me. My mum was in the kitchen and the food was ready. My dad was near the door with a big smile. It was a wonderful morning for me!
