İngilizcede çoğu zaman bir cümlede tek bir fiil vardır. But very often we want to put two verbs together: "I like ...", "I want ..." ne? Bir eylem! İşte o zaman ikinci fiil değişir. Türkçede "yüzmeyi severim" ya da "gitmek istiyorum" deriz; İngilizcede de ikinci fiil ya -ing alır (gerund) ya da başına to gelir (infinitive).
Bu ünitede iki soruya cevap vereceğiz: (1) İkinci fiil ne zaman -ing olur? (2) Ne zaman to alır? İyi haber: bu, hangi ilk fiili kullandığına bağlıdır. So you learn a few verbs with -ing and a few verbs with to, and then it becomes easy.
Bir fiile -ing eklediğimizde ona gerund deriz. A gerund is a verb that works like a noun (isim gibi davranan fiil). "swim" bir eylemdir; "swimming" ise "yüzme / yüzmek" gibi bir isimdir. Bazı fiillerden sonra ikinci fiil her zaman gerund olur.
Aşağıdaki fiillerden sonra ikinci fiil -ing alır. Bunlar genelde bir eylemden hoşlanma / hoşlanmama ya da bir eylemi bitirme anlamı taşır. Listeyi ezberle — cümlelerin çoğu bu fiillerle döner:

Aşağıdaki fiillerden sonra ise ikinci fiil başına to alır (infinitive). Bunlar genelde bir istek, plan, karar ya da ihtiyaç anlatır. Yani gelecekle, niyetle ilgilidir:

Bir sürpriz: like, love, hate fiilleri iki şekilde de kullanılabilir — hem -ing hem to. Anlam neredeyse aynıdır, bu yüzden A2 seviyesinde ikisi de doğrudur:
Küçük bir nüans: like + -ing genelde "o eylemden zevk almak" (hobi) anlamındadır; like + to ise bazen "iyi/doğru olduğu için tercih etmek" anlamı taşır. A2'de bunu bilmen yeterli:

Everybody in Class 4B has a favourite hobby. Some children enjoy quiet hobbies at home, and some prefer playing outside with friends. A hobby is something you love to do in your free time, and it makes life more fun. This week, the class decided to share their hobbies with each other.
Selin enjoys painting. She loves mixing colours, and she never gets bored of it. "I like painting animals the most," she says. "I want to learn to paint birds this year, because they are difficult but beautiful." Selin practises drawing every evening, and she hopes to fill a whole book with her pictures.
Ali prefers active hobbies. He hates sitting still for a long time, so he chose football. "I enjoy running and playing with my team," he says. "I practise kicking the ball every day after school." Ali wants to become a good player, so he never avoids training, even when the weather is cold.
Merve loves reading. She enjoys reading long stories about faraway places, and she reads before sleeping every night. "I prefer reading to watching TV," she says, "because a good book helps me to imagine everything." Merve hopes to read fifty books this year, and she has already finished ten.
Mark, the new student, has an unusual hobby: he enjoys cooking. "I like making simple cakes with my grandmother," he says. "At first I didn't want to try, but now I love it." Mark needs to be careful with the hot oven, so his grandmother always helps him. He hopes to learn to make a big birthday cake one day.
Zeynep enjoys music. She started to learn the guitar last year, and now she practises every weekend. "I hate practising the same song again and again," she laughs, "but I know I need to do it to get better." Zeynep wants to play a song for the whole class at the end of the year.
Their teacher, Mr. Kaya, listened to all the stories with a smile. "I love hearing about your hobbies," he said. "A good hobby teaches you to be patient. When you enjoy doing something, you don't mind practising, and you slowly get better." He told the class that he enjoys gardening, and that he hopes to grow big tomatoes this summer.
Then the class talked about hobbies they wanted to try. Some children decided to start collecting stamps, and others hoped to learn to swim or to dance. "Trying new things is exciting," said Selin. "You never know which hobby you will love." Everybody agreed that a free afternoon is the perfect time to try something new.
Not every hobby is easy at the start. Ali remembers that he wanted to give up football after his first game, but he decided to keep practising. Zeynep's fingers hurt when she began to play the guitar, but she did not stop. "The best part of a hobby," Mr. Kaya said, "is that it teaches you to try again after a mistake."
At the end of the day, the class made a big poster called "Our Hobbies". They wrote down what they enjoyed doing and what they wanted to learn. "We all like different things," Merve said, "and that is what makes our class interesting." Mr. Kaya nodded happily. "Keep practising the hobbies you love," he said, "and never stop learning new ones." That afternoon, everybody went home excited to enjoy their favourite hobby.
