Grammar: Past Ability (could / was able to)

Read the rules, study the examples, then do the exercises. (Kuralları oku, örnekleri incele, sonra alıştırmaları yap.)

Neden Past Ability?

Geçmişte neyi yapabildiğini ya da yapamadığını anlatmak istediğinde, present'teki can / can't yetmez — zamanı geçmişe taşıman gerekir. Bunun için üç yapı kullanırız: could, couldn't ve was / were able to. Bak, aynı cümle geçmişte nasıl değişiyor: "I can swim." (şimdi) → "When I was five, I could swim." (geçmişte).

  • When I was young, I could run very fast.Gençken çok hızlı koşabilirdim.
  • She couldn't drive last year.Geçen yıl araba kullanamıyordu.
  • The exam was hard, but he was able to pass it.Sınav zordu, ama onu geçmeyi başardı.
  • After hours of work, the doctors were able to save the man.Saatlerce çalıştıktan sonra doktorlar adamı kurtarmayı başardı.

Bu bölümde üç yapıyı öğreneceğiz: could (genel geçmiş yeterlilik), couldn't (olumsuz) ve was / were able to (özellikle tek seferlik bir başarı için). Then we will learn the important difference between them. Adım adım gidelim.

1. could: Genel Geçmiş Yeterlilik (general past ability)

I / YouI could swimyüzebilirdim
He / She / ItShe could singşarkı söyleyebilirdi
We / TheyThey could readokuyabilirlerdi
  • My grandfather could speak four languages.Büyükbabam dört dil konuşabilirdi.
  • When she was six, she could ride a bike.Altı yaşındayken bisiklete binebiliyordu.
Kolay hatırlatma
  • could herkes için aynıdır: I could, she could, they could — asla "coulds" olmaz.
  • Fiil hep yalındır: could swim ✓ — could to swim ✗ — could swam ✗.

2. couldn't: Olumsuz (negative — could not)

Geçmişte bir şeyi yapamadığını söylemek için couldn't (= could not) kullanırız.

  • I + couldn't + sleep = I couldn't sleep (uyuyamadım)
  • Resmî yazıda could not, günlük dilde couldn't — ikisi de aynıdır.
  • The baby couldn't walk yet.Bebek henüz yürüyemiyordu.
  • It was too dark, so we couldn't see the road.Çok karanlıktı, bu yüzden yolu göremedik.
  • He could not find his keys this morning.Bu sabah anahtarlarını bulamadı.
Dikkat
  • couldn't zaten olumsuzdur: didn't couldn't ✗ — couldn't ✓.
  • Fiil yalın kalır: couldn't find ✓ — couldn't found ✗.

3. was / were able to (structure)

be able to, "yapabilmek / -meyi başarmak" demektir. Geçmiş için be fiilini geçmişe çeviririz: was (I / he / she / it) ve were (you / we / they). Ardından her zaman to + yalın fiil gelir. Dikkat: burada özneye göre waswere mi seçmen gerekir — could'un aksine şekil değişir.

Öznewas / were able to + fiilAnlam
I / He / She / ItHe was able to finishbitirebildi / bitirmeyi başardı
You / We / TheyWe were able to escapekaçmayı başardık
  • After many tries, she was able to open the door.Birçok denemeden sonra kapıyı açmayı başardı.
  • The players trained hard and were able to win the cup.Oyuncular sıkı çalıştı ve kupayı kazanmayı başardı.
Nasıl seçilir — 2 adım
  • 1. Özne tekil (I/he/she/it) ise → was able to.
  • 2. Özne çoğul (you/we/they) ise → were able to.
  • Ardından hep to + yalın fiil: was able to run ✓ — was able run ✗.

4. could mı, was able to mu? (the key difference)

Bu ünitenin en önemli kuralı budur, dikkatle oku. İki yapı çoğu zaman aynı görünse de tek bir durumda ayrışır: geçmişte tek bir kez başarılan bir eylem. Böyle bir başarı için could kullanılmaz; was / were able to gerekir.

DurumKullanÖrnek
Genel yetenek (bir dönem boyunca)could / was able toI could swim as a child.
Tek seferlik başarı (belirli bir an)was/were able to ✓ (could ✗)The race was hard, but I was able to win.
Olumsuz (her iki durumda)couldn't = wasn't able toI couldn't win the race.
Altın kural
  • Genel yetenek → could ya da was able to (ikisi de olur).
  • Tek seferlik başarı → sadece was/were able to: "The test was hard, but she was able to pass." ✓ — "...she could pass." ✗.
  • Olumsuzda ise fark kalkar: couldn't her durumda kullanılabilir.

5. Sorular ve Kısa Cevaplar (Questions & Short Answers)

Soru sorarken Could özneden önce gelir: "Could you swim when you were five?" — yardımcı fiile (did) gerek yoktur. was/were able to ile soru için be fiilini öne alırız: "Were you able to finish?"

SoruOlumlu kısa cevapOlumsuz kısa cevap
Could you ride a bike?Yes, I could.No, I couldn't.
Were they able to come?Yes, they were. No, they weren't.
  • Could your sister read before school?Kız kardeşin okuldan önce okuyabiliyor muydu?
  • Were you able to fix the car in the end?Sonunda arabayı tamir edebildin mi?
Karıştırma
  • Soruda "did" yoktur: "Could you swim?" ✓ — "Did you could swim?" ✗.
  • be able to sorusunda be fiili öne gelir: "Were you able to...?" ✓ — "Did you able to...?" ✗.

6. Yaygın Hatalar (Common Mistakes)

Türkçe konuşanların geçmiş yeterlilik yapılarında en sık yaptığı hatalar aşağıda. Kendi cümlelerini yazarken bu listeyle kontrol et:

Yanlış ✗Doğru ✓Neden?
When I was five, I could to swim. When I was five, I could swim.could'dan sonra "to" gelmez, yalın fiil gelir.
She could sang very well. She could sing very well.could + yalın fiil (sang değil sing).
The test was hard, but I could pass it....but I was able to pass it.Tek seferlik başarı için was able to, could değil.
They was able to win the match. They were able to win the match.Çoğul özne (they) → were able to.
I didn't could find my phone.I couldn't find my phone.couldn't zaten olumsuz; "didn't" eklenmez.
Did you could ride a bike?Could you ride a bike?Soruda "did" yok; Could öne gelir.

7. Uygulama: Eski Günler (Model Dialogue)

Şimdi her şeyi bir arada görelim. Two friends talk about what they could and couldn't do in the past. Koyu yazılan yapılara dikkat ederek iki kez oku:

  • — When you were a child, could you swim?Çocukken yüzebiliyor muydun?
  • — Yes, I could swim very well, but I couldn't ride a bike.Evet, çok iyi yüzebiliyordum ama bisiklete binemiyordum.
  • — Really? So how did you learn?Gerçekten mi? Peki nasıl öğrendin?
  • — One summer I practised every day, and finally I was able to ride to school alone.Bir yaz her gün pratik yaptım ve sonunda okula tek başıma gitmeyi başardım.
  • — Nice! My sister and I couldn't cook at all back then.Güzel! Kız kardeşimle ben o zamanlar hiç yemek yapamıyorduk.
  • — But last week you were able to make a whole dinner! People change.Ama geçen hafta koca bir akşam yemeği yapabildin! İnsanlar değişiyor.
Kendini test et
  • Diyalogda "yüzebiliyordum" için hangi yapı kullanıldı — genel yetenek olduğu için? (Cevap: could)
  • "finally I was able to ride to school" — burada neden could değil de was able to var? (Cevap: tek seferlik bir başarı)
  • "were able to make a whole dinner" cümlesindeki özne çoğul olsaydı hangi kelime gelirdi? (Cevap: zaten were; tekilde was olurdu)

School
Yeni şehirde yeni okul: çok çalışıp başarmak.
A New Start in the City

Two years ago, my friend Leyla moved from a small village to a big city. Life in the village was simple and fun. She could grow vegetables in the garden, she could ride a horse, and she could climb the tallest trees. But she couldn't speak much English, and she couldn't ride a bike in busy streets. For a country girl, the big city was strange and difficult.

In the village, Leyla could do many things well. She could milk the cows early in the morning, and she could bake bread with her mother. She could find her way home in the dark, because she knew every path. But she could not imagine a place with tall buildings, fast cars, and thousands of people.

In the first week, Leyla couldn't make any friends. At her new school she was always too nervous to talk to the other children. She couldn't sleep at night because she missed her old village. Her big brother said, "Be patient. You are clever, and soon you will find good friends."

The first days were hard in every way. Leyla couldn't understand the fast city talk, and she couldn't find the right classroom on her own. She was too shy to ask for help, so she often felt lost. At night she couldn't sleep well, because everything was new and a little frightening.

One morning, the teacher held a big quiz in class. Leyla had to answer questions in front of everyone. The questions were hard, but this time she stayed calm. After ten difficult minutes, she was able to answer everything, and the captain of the quiz team asked her to join. She was so happy that she couldn't stop smiling.

After the quiz, things slowly changed. Leyla was able to make her first real friend on the team, a kind girl who helped her every day. Soon she was able to understand the lessons, and she could even laugh at the teacher's jokes. Step by step, she was able to do things that once seemed impossible.

On the quiz team, Leyla learned fast. In three months she was able to speak English with the other children, and after a year she was able to save enough money for a new bike. She still couldn't ride it well at first, but she practised every weekend until she could.

By the end of the year, Leyla could hardly believe her own progress. She was able to speak English in class, and she was able to help new students who felt as lost as she once did. She still couldn't do everything perfectly, but she could try again without fear. Practice, not luck, made her stronger.

Today Leyla says, "In the village I could do many things, but in the city I learned that I was able to do much more." She never gave up, and that is why her life changed.

Speaking: Talk About the Past & Practise

Play a memory game, then do the extra practice quiz. (Bir anı oyunu oyna, sonra ekstra alıştırma testini yap.)

Warm-up: The Memory Game (Anı Oyunu)

Geçmişte neyi yapabildiğini ve yapamadığını paylaş. Ask your partner about their childhood and answer with could, couldn't or was able to. Önce örnek diyaloğa bak:

A:When you were seven, could you swim?Yedi yaşındayken yüzebiliyor muydun?
B:No, I couldn't! But I could climb any tree.Hayır, yüzemiyordum! Ama her ağaca tırmanabiliyordum.
A:Really? I couldn't climb, but one summer I was able to win a swimming race.Öyle mi? Ben tırmanamıyordum ama bir yaz bir yüzme yarışını kazanmayı başardım.
B:Nice! Could you play any instrument?Güzel! Herhangi bir enstrüman çalabiliyor muydun?
A:I could play the piano a little. And you?Piyanoyu biraz çalabiliyordum. Ya sen?
B:I couldn't play anything then, but last year I was able to learn the guitar.O zaman hiçbir şey çalamıyordum ama geçen yıl gitar öğrenmeyi başardım.

Your Turn: Talk About the Past (Sıra Sende)

Şimdi sıra sende. Talk about each of these out loud — sesli olarak, could/couldn't/was able to kullanarak. Mümkünse bir arkadaşınla konuş. Amaç: geçmiş yeterliliği rahatça anlatabilmek.

  • something you could do at the age of six (altı yaşında yapabildiğin bir şey) → "When I was six, I could ..."
  • something you couldn't do then (o zaman yapamadığın bir şey) → "I couldn't ..."
  • a difficult thing you finally managed to do (sonunda başardığın zor bir şey) → "After a lot of practice, I was able to ..."
  • a skill someone in your family could do (bir aile üyenin yapabildiği bir şey) → "My ... could ..."
İpucu — akıcı konuşmak için
  • Genel yetenek için could, tek seferlik başarı için was/were able to — Grammar bölümündeki mantığı uygula.
  • Cümleleri bağlaçlarla uzat: "I couldn't ride a bike at first, but after a month I was able to ride alone."

Optional: Write & Submit (İsteğe Bağlı: Yaz ve Gönder)

Söylediklerini yazıya dök ve öğretmenine gönder — istersen. (Write down what you said and submit it for feedback — optional.) 4-6 cümle, her birinde bir geçmiş yeterlilik yapısı kullan.

Değerlendirme öğretmenin tarafından yapılacak. (Your teacher will review your speaking task.)

Extra Practice (Ekstra Alıştırma)

10 questions on past ability — could, couldn't and was/were able to mixed. (10 soru: karışık geçmiş yeterlilik.) Her soru anında değerlendirilir.

Writing: What I Could and Couldn't Do

Write and submit your paragraph; your teacher will review it. (Paragrafını yaz ve gönder; öğretmenin değerlendirecek.)

Geçmiş Yeterlilik Yazını Canlandırır (Richer Writing)

Kısa, kopuk cümleler bir yazıyı zayıf gösterir. What makes a "past" story interesting is past ability: neyi yapabildiğini, neyi yapamadığını ve sonunda neyi başardığını anlatırsın. Bir de bağlaçları (and, but, so, because, when...) eklersen, yazın gerçek bir hikâyeye dönüşür.

Farkı gör — aynı bilgiler, iki farklı yazım:

Kopuk cümleler ✗Past ability + bağlaç ile ✓
I was a child. I couldn't swim. I practised. I learned. Now I swim well. When I was a child, I couldn't swim, but I practised every summer until I was able to swim well, and now I love the sea.
Kural
  • Yazında en az 3 geçmiş yeterlilik yapısı kullan (could / couldn't / was/were able to).
  • Ayrıca en az 3 bağlaç kullan: and, but, so, because, when, after, before, until.

Bağlaç Hatırlatması (Connectors Recap)

A2 boyunca öğrendiğin bağlaçlar. This is your toolbox — bunları geçmiş yeterlilik yapılarıyla birlikte kullan:

Değerlendirme öğretmenin tarafından yapılacak. (Your teacher will evaluate your writing.)

Sample Answer (~125 words) When I was younger, I could do many small things, but I couldn't do the big ones. In our village I could climb trees, and I could swim in the river because the water was warm in summer. However, I couldn't ride a bike, and I couldn't speak any English at all.

At school English was very difficult, so I was often nervous. But my teacher was patient, and I practised every evening until I was able to read simple stories.

The best day was when my father brought home an old bike. At first I fell many times and couldn't balance, but after two weeks I was able to ride to school alone. That day I learned that hard work always helps.
