Grammar: Quantifiers

Read the rules, study the examples, then do the exercises.

Quantifiers are small words like much, many, a lot of, a few, a little that tell us the amount of something. Türkçede "çok, biraz, birkaç, az" dediğin yerde İngilizcede hangi kelimeyi seçeceğin, ismin türüne bağlıdır.

  • I don't drink much milk.Çok süt içmem.
  • We have a lot of homework today.Bugün çok ödevimiz var.
  • There are only a few chairs in the room.Odada sadece birkaç sandalye var.

Bu bölümde önce ismin türünü (countable / uncountable) ayırt etmeyi öğreneceğiz, çünkü bütün quantifier seçimleri buna dayanır. Then we will study much / many, a lot of, and the tricky pairs a few / few and a little / little. Adım adım gidelim.

1. Köprü: Sayılabilir mi, Sayılamaz mı? (Countable / Uncountable)

Quantifier seçmeden önce sorman gereken tek soru şudur: bu ismi sayabiliyor muyum? Some nouns you can count (one apple, two apples), others you cannot (water — not "two waters"). Bu ayrım, doğru kelimeyi seçmenin anahtarıdır.

TürNe demek?Örnekler
Countable
(sayılabilir)
Tek tek sayılır; çoğulu vardır (-s).chair / chairs · apple / apples · person / people · box / boxes
Uncountable
(sayılamaz)
Sayılmaz; çoğulu yoktur; hep tekil fiil alır.water · money · time · information · sugar · homework
Dikkat
  • Sayamadığın ismi bir kapla sayarsın: "two glasses of milk", "a bottle of water", "a piece of information".
  • information, advice, money, furniture, news İngilizcede sayılamazdır: "an information" ✗ → "some information" ✓.

2. much / many (Çok)

Her ikisi de "çok" demektir, ama much sayılamaz, many sayılabilir isimlerle gider. We usually use them in questions and negative sentences. Olumlu cümlede daha çok "a lot of" tercih edilir (aşağıda).

Belirteçİsim türüÖrnekTürkçesi
muchsayılamazHow much water do you need?Ne kadar suya ihtiyacın var?
muchsayılamaz (olumsuz)I don't have much time.Çok vaktim yok.
manysayılabilirHow many people came?Kaç kişi geldi?
manysayılabilir (olumsuz)There aren't many chairs.Fazla sandalye yok.
Kalıp
  • How much + sayılamaz / How many + sayılabilir: "How much money?", "How many boxes?"
  • Olumlu cümlede "much" doğal değildir: "I have much homework." ✗ → "I have a lot of homework." ✓

3. a lot of / lots of (Çok — ikisiyle de)

a lot of hem sayılabilir hem sayılamaz isimlerle kullanılır ve genellikle olumlu cümlelerde gelir. It is the easy, safe choice for "çok" in a positive sentence. "lots of" ise aynı anlamda, biraz daha günlük konuşma dilidir.

  • We have a lot of homework. (homework = sayılamaz)Çok ödevimiz var.
  • She has a lot of friends. (friends = sayılabilir)Çok arkadaşı var.
  • There were lots of people at the party.Partide bir sürü insan vardı.
Küçük not
  • Emin değilsen olumlu cümlede a lot of kullan — hem sayılabilir hem sayılamazla her zaman doğrudur.
  • İsim olmadan tek başına "a lot" de: "Do you have homework? Yes, a lot." (of yok)

4. a few / few & a little / little (Az / Birkaç)

Burada dikkat! Dört kelime birbirine çok benzer ama iki farkı vardır. Birincisi: a few / few sayılabilir, a little / little sayılamaz isimlerle gider. İkincisi — ve daha önemlisi — "a" olup olmaması anlamı değiştirir:

Belirteçİsim türüAnlamÖrnek
a fewsayılabilirbirkaç (yeterli, olumlu)I have a few friends here, so I'm happy.
fewsayılabilirçok az / neredeyse hiç (olumsuz)Few people came, so the room was empty.
a littlesayılamazbiraz (yeterli, olumlu)We have a little time, let's play a game.
littlesayılamazçok az / yetersiz (olumsuz)I have little money, so I can't come.
Altın kural — "a" farkı
  • a few / a little = "biraz var, yeterli" (olumlu his): "I have a little sugar — enough for the cake."
  • few / little = "neredeyse hiç yok, yetersiz" (olumsuz his): "I have little sugar — not enough for the cake."

5. Hepsi Bir Arada (Quick Map)

Kafan karışırsa bu haritaya bak. Önce ismin türünü seç, sonra miktarı:

AnlamSayılabilir (chairs, people)Sayılamaz (water, time)
"çok" (soru/olumsuz)manymuch
"çok" (olumlu)a lot of / lots ofa lot of / lots of
"birkaç / biraz" (yeterli)a fewa little
"çok az" (yetersiz)fewlittle

6. Yaygın Hatalar (Common Mistakes)

Türkçe konuşanların quantifier'larda en sık yaptığı hatalar aşağıda. Kendi cümlelerini yazarken bu listeyle kontrol et:

Yanlış ✗Doğru ✓Neden?
How many water do you drink? How much water do you drink?water sayılamaz → much.
There isn't many time.There isn't much time.time sayılamaz → much.
I have much friends.I have a lot of friends.Olumlu cümlede "a lot of".
There is a few milk.There is a little milk.milk sayılamaz → a little.
We have a little chairs.We have a few chairs.chairs sayılabilir → a few.
She has few friends, she is never alone. She has a few friends, she is never alone.Olumlu his = a few (yeterli).
An information, please. Some information, please.information sayılamaz; "an" almaz.

7. Uygulama: Doğum Günü Hazırlığı (Model Dialogue)

Şimdi her şeyi bir arada görelim. Two friends check the kitchen before a birthday party. Koyu yazılan quantifier'lara dikkat ederek iki kez oku:

  • — How much juice do we have for the party?Parti için ne kadar meyve suyumuz var?
  • — Not much. There is only a little in the bottle.Fazla değil. Şişede sadece biraz var.
  • — And how many cups are clean?Kaç bardak temiz?
  • — Only a few. We need a lot of cups for ten friends.Sadece birkaç tane. On arkadaş için çok bardak lazım.
  • — OK. We have little time, so I'll get some now.Tamam. Az vaktimiz var, o yüzden şimdi biraz alayım.
  • — Thanks! Get a lot of water too — few kids bring their own.Sağ ol! Bol su da al — çok az çocuk kendininkini getiriyor.
Kendini test et
  • "There is only a little juice" — juice neden "a little" aldı? (Cevap: sayılamaz.)
  • "Only a few cups" ile "few kids bring their own" arasındaki his farkı nedir? (a few = yeterince temiz bardak var; few = neredeyse hiç kimse getirmiyor.)
  • Diyalogda kaç farklı quantifier çeşidi geçiyor? (much, a little, many, a few, a lot of, little, few.)

Reading: Saturday at the Market

Read the text, then answer the questions. (Metni oku, sonra soruları cevapla.)

Before You Read (Okumadan Önce)

İyi okuyucular metne hazırlıklı girer. Before you read, think about these three questions (cevapları yazmana gerek yok):

  • Think about a market or a big shop near you. What can you buy there? (Yakınındaki bir pazar ya da büyük dükkânı düşün. Orada ne alabilirsin?)
  • The story is about shopping and amounts. Which small words will you see a lot? (Metin alışveriş ve miktarlarla ilgili. Hangi küçük kelimeleri çok göreceksin?)
  • Look at the title. Do you go shopping with a plan or without one? Guess! (Başlığa bak. Alışverişe planla mı plansız mı gidersin? Tahmin et!)
Nasıl okumalı?
  • 1. tur: Metni durmadan, hızlıca oku. Konuyu yakala; her kelimeyi anlamak zorunda değilsin.
  • 2. tur: Soruları oku, sonra cevapları metinde ara. Miktar belirteçlerine (much, many, a few, a little...) dikkat et.

Words to spot (Metinde geçen, Grammar ve Speaking bölümünden tanıdığın kelimeler): a lot of · much · many · a few · few · a little · little · enough

Pazardaki tezgâhlar: neyden çok, neyden az var? Sayalım.
Saturday at the Market

Every Saturday morning, Deniz goes to the big street market with her grandmother. The market is Deniz's favourite place in the whole town. There are a lot of colours, a lot of noise, and a lot of good smells. People sell fruit, vegetables, cheese, bread, and many other things. Deniz loves to walk between the stalls and look at everything.

This Saturday, Grandma had a plan. "We are going to make a big soup for the family tonight," she said. "There will be ten people at dinner, so we need a lot of vegetables. But we don't have much money today, so we must be careful."

First, they stopped at the vegetable stall. There were a lot of tomatoes, and they looked fresh and red. "How many tomatoes do we need?" asked Deniz. "We need many," said Grandma, "because everybody likes tomato soup." They bought eight tomatoes. Then Deniz saw the potatoes. There were only a few potatoes left in the box, so they took all of them.

Next, they looked for onions. "How much is one kilo of onions?" Grandma asked the seller. The onions were cheap, so they bought a lot. But there was only a little garlic on the table. "We need just a little garlic for the soup," said Grandma, "so this is enough." Deniz put the small garlic in the bag.

At the cheese stall, there were many kinds of cheese. Deniz wanted to try all of them, but Grandma laughed. "We don't have much time," she said, "and we don't need much cheese. A little is enough for the bread." They bought a small piece of white cheese.

Then something exciting happened. Deniz saw a stall with a lot of sweets and cakes. "Can we buy some?" she asked. Grandma thought for a moment. "We have a little money left," she said, "so we can buy a few small cakes. But not many, because sweets are not good before dinner." Deniz was happy with three little cakes.

Before they went home, they needed bread. At the bread stall, there were not many loaves left. "There are only a few loaves," said the baker, "so you are lucky!" They bought two loaves of fresh bread, and it smelled wonderful.

On the way home, the bags were heavy. "We bought a lot of things today," said Deniz, "but we didn't spend much money." Grandma smiled. "That is the secret of the market," she said. "If you look carefully, you can find good food and pay only a little. A few coins and a little planning make a big dinner."

That night, the soup was hot and delicious, and there was enough for everybody. There were even a few bowls left for the next day. Deniz was tired, but she was proud. "Next Saturday," she asked, "can we go to the market again?" Grandma nodded. "Of course," she said. "There is always a lot to see at the market."

Miktar Belirteçleriyle Yazmak (Writing with Quantifiers)

Bir yeri ya da bir durumu anlatırken sürekli "ne kadar" ve "kaç tane" bilgisi verirsin. Quantifiers make your writing clear and exact — okuyucu tam olarak ne kadarından bahsettiğini anlar. Aşağıdaki bağlaçlarla birleştirdiğinde yazın hem doğru hem akıcı olur.

BağlaçAnlamıNe işe yarar?Örnek
andveEkleme yaparI have a few plants and a lot of books.
butamaZıtlık gösterirI have many cups, but little juice.
sobu yüzdenSonuç bildirirI have little time, so I need help.
becauseçünküSebep bildirirI need a few chairs because we have guests.

Farkı gör — aynı bilgiler, iki farklı yazım:

Kopuk cümleler ✗Bağlaçlı akıcı yazı ✓
I have books. I have plants. I don't have time. I need help. I have a lot of books and a few plants, but I have little time, so I need some help.
Kural
  • Yazında en az 3 bağlaç kullan (and, but, so, because).
  • Her isimden önce doğru quantifier'ı seç: sayılabilir mi (a few / many) sayılamaz mı (a little / much)?

Paragraf Yapısı (Paragraph Structure)

Bir betimleme paragrafı üç bölümden oluşur. This skeleton is the same every time — içini değiştirirsin, yapıyı değiştirmezsin:

BölümNe yazılır?Örnek
1. Giriş
(Opening)
Neyi anlatacağın: oda / çanta / mutfakLet me tell you about my kitchen.
2. Gövde
(Body)
Neyin çok/az olduğu; ne gerektiği. Quantifier + bağlaç.I have a lot of plates, but only a little juice, so...
3. Kapanış
(Closing)
Genel bir yorum: yeterli mi, ne lazım?I have enough for now, but I need a few new cups.

Task (Görev)

Describe a shopping trip to a market or a shop. Say what there was a lot of, what there was only a little/few of, and what you needed to buy. (Bir pazara ya da dükkâna alışveriş gezisini anlat: neyden çok, neyden az vardı, ne alman gerektiğini söyle.)

  • where you went (a market / a shop)
  • two things there were a lot of (a lot of / many / plenty of)
  • two things there were only a little / a few of
  • one thing there was little / few of (not enough)
  • one thing you needed to buy
  • en az 3 bağlaç: and, but, so, because
  • en az 4 farklı quantifier: much, many, a lot of, a few, a little, few, little, enough

Örnek başlangıçlar (Example openers)

"Last Saturday I went to the ..." "There was a lot of ... and a few ..." "There was little ..., so we needed ..."

Your Paragraph (100-130 words / kelime)

0 kelime

Değerlendirme öğretmenin tarafından yapılacak. (Your teacher will evaluate your writing.)

Sample Answer (~120 words) Last Saturday I went to the street market with my mother. There was a lot of fruit and many colourful vegetables, so it was hard to choose. There were plenty of red apples, and I put several of them in the bag.

However, there were only a few fresh eggs and a little honey left, so we had to be quick. There was very little bread too — not enough for the week — and few clean boxes for the tomatoes, because it was late in the morning.

I think the market had enough food for our family, but we still needed to buy a few onions and some more cheese. It is a busy market, but I like it a lot.
