Grammar: was / were (be geçmişi)

Geçmişte olan şeyleri anlat: dün, geçen hafta sonu, geçen yıl. (Talk about the past with the verb "be".)

Gri, senin rehberin
Selam, ben Gri. Bu ünitede am / is / are fiilinin geçmiş hâlini öğreniyoruz: was ve were. Dün, geçen hafta sonu ya da geçen yıl olan şeyleri anlatırken kullanırız: "I was at the concert last night." ve "They were really good." Kim öznesine bakıp doğru biçimi seçeceğiz. Başlayalım.

Dinleme (Listening)

Kısa bir video dinle ve izle. (Listen and watch a short video.)

Video çok yakında burada olacak!

Ne Demek? (The Past of "be")

am, is, are şimdiki zamandır. Geçmişten söz ederken bunların yerine was ve were gelir. Yani "be" fiilinin geçmiş hâli sadece iki kelimedir. Hangisini kullanacağın özneye bağlıdır:

  • I was at the concert last night.Dün gece konserdeydim. (I → was)
  • They were really good.Gerçekten çok iyiydiler. (they → were)
  • Where were you yesterday?Dün neredeydin? (soru)
Kolay yol
  • Tekil özne (I, he, she, it) → was.
  • Çoğul özne (you, we, they) → were. (you her zaman were!)

1. was / were (Hangi Özne Hangi Biçim?)

Doğru biçimi seçmek için önce özneye bak. Bu tablo tüm özneleri gösterir; genç hayatından zaman ifadeleriyle (last night, yesterday) birlikte kullan:

ÖzneBiçimÖrnek
I / he / she / itwasShe was at home yesterday.
you / we / theywereWe were tired after the trip.
Kolay yol
  • am, is → geçmişte was. are → geçmişte were.
  • "You was" ✗ → "You were" ✓ (you daima were).

2. Olumsuz (wasn't / weren't)

Olumsuz yapmak için sona not ekleriz: was not = wasn't, were not = weren't. Konuşurken kısa hâli kullanırız:

OlumluOlumsuzTürkçe
I was late.I wasn't late.Geç kalmadım.
They were here.They weren't here.Burada değillerdi.
Kolay yol
  • was → wasn't, were → weren't. Fiili değiştirmeden sadece "not" ekle.
  • "I didn't was" ✗ → "I wasn't" ✓ (was ile did kullanılmaz).

3. Soru (Was ...? / Were ...?)

Soru sormak için was / were özneden önce gelir. Kısa cevaplarda da aynı biçimi kullanırız:

SoruKısa cevapTürkçe
Were you at school?Yes, I was. / No, I wasn't.Okulda mıydın?
Was the film good?Yes, it was. / No, it wasn't.Film iyi miydi?
Kolay yol
  • Soruda fiil başa gelir: Was she...? Were they...?
  • Where / How ile: Where were you last night?

4. there was / there were (Vardı)

Geçmişte bir şeyin var olduğunu söylemek için: tekil için there was, çoğul için there were:

YapıKullanımÖrnek
there wastekilThere was a big crowd at the concert.
there wereçoğulThere were a lot of people last weekend.
Kolay yol
  • Tek şey → there was. Birden çok şey → there were.
  • "There were a party" ✗ → "There was a party" ✓ (party tekil).

5. Sık Yapılan Hatalar (Common Mistakes)

was ve were'i karıştırmak kolaydır. Bu tabloyu bir kontrol listesi gibi kullan:

Yanlış ✗Doğru ✓Neden?
You was late.You were late.you → were.
They was happy. They were happy.they (çoğul) → were.
She were tired. She was tired.she (tekil) → was.
I didn't was there.I wasn't there.was ile did kullanılmaz.
There were a concert.There was a concert.a concert tekil → there was.
Altın kural
  • Önce özneye bak: tekil (I/he/she/it) → was, çoğul (you/we/they) → were. Olumsuzda wasn't / weren't, soruda fiil başa gelir. was/were ile asla did kullanma.

6. Birlikte Görelim (Two Friends Chat)

İki genç dün akşamki konseri konuşuyor. Koyu yazılan was / were biçimlerine dikkat et ve iki kez oku:

  • Where were you last night? You weren't at home.Dün gece neredeydin? Evde değildin.
  • — I was at the concert with Aylin. It was amazing!Aylin'le konserdeydim. Muhteşemdi!
  • — Really? Were there a lot of people?Sahi mi? Çok insan var mıydı?
  • — Yes, there were. The tickets weren't expensive, so it was full.Evet, vardı. Biletler pahalı değildi, o yüzden doluydu.
  • Was the band good?Grup iyi miydi?
  • — They were really good. The singers were amazing and the crowd was loud.Gerçekten çok iyiydiler. Şarkıcılar harikaydı ve kalabalık gürültülüydü.
Sık yapılan hatalar
  • "You was there" ✗ → "You were there" ✓ (you → were).
  • "They was good" ✗ → "They were good" ✓ (çoğul → were).
  • "There were a party" ✗ → "There was a party" ✓ (tekil → was).

The Concert Last Night

Hi! I am Deniz and I am sixteen. Last night I was at a concert with my best friend, Aylin. It was our favourite band, so we were really excited. We weren't late; we were there an hour early.

My favourite band is called Blue Sky. Their songs are on my phone every day. Last week I was very nervous about the tickets. The tickets were online and they were fast to sell. My cousin was quick, so we were happy. My mum and dad were kind about the plan. My little sister was sad because she was too young for the concert. She was at home with my grandma.

Aylin is my best friend. We are in the same class at school. She was my partner for the whole night. Her jacket was black and her hat was red. My shoes were new and white. We were a good team. Before the concert, we were on the phone for one hour. Our plan was simple: fun, music and photos. We were ready for a great night.

In the morning I was at school, but my mind was on the concert. My mum was a little worried because the city centre was busy. My dad was very kind and he was our driver. The roads weren't empty, so the trip was slow. Aylin was quiet in the car, but I was very excited.

We were at the concert hall at six o'clock. The queue was very long, but it was fun. Many teenagers were in the queue with us. Their T-shirts were black and blue, like the band's colours. My T-shirt was blue too. The security guards were friendly and calm. The doors were big and the signs were bright. The night was cold, but our hearts were warm. We were happy and our smiles were wide.

The hall was huge and there were a lot of people. There was a big crowd near the stage, but our seats were perfect. The tickets weren't expensive, so many students from my school were there too. Our friends Can and Ela were next to us, and they were very loud.

Before the music, we were a little hungry. The popcorn was warm and the water was cold. My drink was orange and Aylin's drink was red. Our seats were close to the stage. The stage was very big and the screens were huge. The microphones were ready and the guitars were on the stage. Everyone was excited for the band.

Our teacher, Mr Kaya, was there with his son. The lights were bright and the room was warm. Some fans were in funny costumes and their faces were full of joy. There was a small shop near the door, but the drinks were expensive. The music wasn't quiet at all; it was really loud.

The first song was slow and calm. The second song was fast and loud. My favourite song was the third one. The words were easy, so we were all singers for one night. Aylin's hands were in the air. My voice was loud, but it was not a problem. The people around us were nice. Two boys near the aisle were from another school. They were friendly and their smiles were big.

The band members were kind to the fans. The singer's voice was strong and clear. The drummer was fast and the lights were like stars. Some fans were with their parents, and some were with friends. A few little kids were on their dads' shoulders. Everyone was part of one big family for two hours. The night was short, but it was perfect.

The band was amazing. The singers were great and the songs were loud and fun. After the concert we were tired but very happy. It was the best night of the month.

After the last song, the lights were low. The crowd was quiet for a moment, and then everyone was loud again. My hands were tired from clapping. Aylin's phone was full, like mine. We were happy but a little sleepy. Outside, the air was cool and fresh. My dad's car was near the door. He was there on time, and he was not angry. It was a night for my diary. The trip home was quiet and calm.

On the way home the streets were quiet and the sky was dark. My phone was full of photos and short videos. My parents weren't asleep; they were happy to see my big smile. It was a long day, but it wasn't boring. Where were you last weekend? Was your weekend fun too?
