Mert started at Green Valley School in September. On his first day, he was very nervous because he didn't know anybody, and the building was big and easy to get lost in. His form teacher, Mr. Kaya, met him at the gate at eight o'clock, showed him the classrooms and introduced him to the class. There were twenty-four students in the class, but three of them were on a school trip that day, so some seats were empty.
In his first week, Mert didn't say much. He listened to the lessons, watched the other students and made notes. It wasn't easy, but it was useful, because he learned the school rules. He also had lunch with Kaan, a boy from the football team. Kaan told him about the clubs, and he gave him one important tip: "Join a club — it's the best way to make friends."
In October, Mert joined the science club. He worked on a small robot for two weeks with a partner, and they made three different designs. The first design didn't work, and Mert was sad about it, but the second one was much better. The club showed the robot at the school fair, and Mr. Kaya was very proud of them.
In November, Mert had a difficult month. He was ill for a few days, so he stayed at home and missed an important test. But his friends helped him: Kaan sent him the notes, and a classmate explained the difficult parts. At the end of the term, Mr. Kaya gave him good news: Mert's work was strong, and after the winter break he can be a captain of the science club.

It is nine o'clock on a Monday morning, and Green Valley School is very busy. In the main hall, there are about thirty students, and everybody is doing something different.
Mert is sitting near the window in the science room. He is finishing his robot project, and he is listening to music with his headphones. He can work very fast when the music is on. Behind him, Kaan is talking to a new student from Germany. The new student would like some help with his timetable, so Kaan is showing him the way to the maths class. He can speak a little German, but they are speaking English because it is easier for both of them.
In the sports hall, there is a big volleyball match. Miss Deniz is teaching a class of twelve students. She is explaining the rules, and everybody is listening. There is some water on the bench, but there isn't any juice, so Ela is walking to the canteen to buy some.
In the canteen, two students are waiting for their sandwiches. One of them is telling a funny story, and the other one is laughing. Zeynep, the class monitor, is preparing the classroom for a guest: an important writer would like to visit the school at eleven o'clock, and she wants everything to be perfect.
Only one 'student' is not busy: the school cat, Minnoş. She is sleeping on a warm chair near the door, and she isn't listening to anybody. The students can hear the bell, the voices and the music, but Minnoş can sleep in every situation!
