Read the rules, study the examples, then do the exercises. (Kuralları oku, örnekleri incele, sonra alıştırmaları yap.)
Geçmişte neyi yapabildiğini ya da yapamadığını anlatmak istediğinde, present'teki can / can't yetmez — zamanı geçmişe taşıman gerekir. Bunun için üç yapı kullanırız: could, couldn't ve was / were able to. Bak, aynı cümle geçmişte nasıl değişiyor: "I can swim." (şimdi) → "When I was five, I could swim." (geçmişte).
Bu bölümde üç yapıyı öğreneceğiz: could (genel geçmiş yeterlilik), couldn't (olumsuz) ve was / were able to (özellikle tek seferlik bir başarı için). Then we will learn the important difference between them.
| Özne | could + yalın fiil | Anlam |
|---|---|---|
| I / You | I could swim | yüzebilirdim |
| He / She / It | She could sing | şarkı söyleyebilirdi |
| We / They | They could read | okuyabilirlerdi |
Geçmişte bir şeyi yapamadığını söylemek için couldn't (= could not) kullanırız. Türkçedeki "-emedim / -amadım" ekine denk gelir. Yine özne değişse de şekli aynıdır ve fiil yalın kalır. Hem genel yetersizlik hem de tek bir olaydaki başarısızlık için kullanılabilir.
be able to, "yapabilmek / -meyi başarmak" demektir. Geçmiş için be fiilini geçmişe çeviririz: was (I / he / she / it) ve were (you / we / they). Ardından her zaman to + yalın fiil gelir. Dikkat: burada özneye göre was mı were mi seçmen gerekir — could'un aksine şekil değişir.
| Özne | was / were able to + fiil | Anlam |
|---|---|---|
| I / He / She / It | He was able to finish | bitirebildi / bitirmeyi başardı |
| You / We / They | We were able to escape | kaçmayı başardık |
Bu ünitenin en önemli kuralı budur, dikkatle oku. İki yapı çoğu zaman aynı görünse de tek bir durumda ayrışır: geçmişte tek bir kez başarılan bir eylem. Böyle bir başarı için could kullanılmaz; was / were able to gerekir.
| Durum | Kullan | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Genel yetenek (bir dönem boyunca) | could / was able to | I could swim as a child. |
| Tek seferlik başarı (belirli bir an) | was/were able to ✓ (could ✗) | The race was hard, but I was able to win. |
| Olumsuz (her iki durumda) | couldn't = wasn't able to | I couldn't win the race. |
Soru sorarken Could özneden önce gelir: "Could you swim when you were five?" — yardımcı fiile (did) gerek yoktur. was/were able to ile soru için be fiilini öne alırız: "Were you able to finish?"
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Could you ride a bike? | Yes, I could. | No, I couldn't. |
| Were they able to come? | Yes, they were. | No, they weren't. |
Türkçe konuşanların geçmiş yeterlilik yapılarında en sık yaptığı hatalar aşağıda. Kendi cümlelerini yazarken bu listeyle kontrol et:
| Yanlış ✗ | Doğru ✓ | Neden? |
|---|---|---|
| When I was five, I could to swim. | When I was five, I could swim. | could'dan sonra "to" gelmez, yalın fiil gelir. |
| She could sang very well. | She could sing very well. | could + yalın fiil (sang değil sing). |
| The test was hard, but I could pass it. | ...but I was able to pass it. | Tek seferlik başarı için was able to, could değil. |
| They was able to win the match. | They were able to win the match. | Çoğul özne (they) → were able to. |
| I didn't could find my phone. | I couldn't find my phone. | couldn't zaten olumsuz; "didn't" eklenmez. |
| Did you could ride a bike? | Could you ride a bike? | Soruda "did" yok; Could öne gelir. |

Words to spot (Metinde geçen, Speaking bölümünden tanıdığın kelimeler): village · grow · interview · nervous · manager · guest · save · practise · could · couldn't · was able to
Ten years ago, my aunt Leyla moved from a small village to a big city. Life in the village was simple. She could grow vegetables, she could ride a horse, and she could fix almost anything in the house. But she couldn't speak much English, and she couldn't drive a car. For a country girl, the city was strange and difficult.
The village was very small. Only a few families lived there. There was one shop, one school, and one old bridge over the river. Everyone knew everyone. In the morning, Leyla could hear the birds and the sheep. She could walk to the fields in ten minutes. Life was quiet and slow. Leyla lived with her mother, her father, and her little brother. Her mother could make bread and cheese. Her father could build walls and doors. Leyla learned many things from them. She could plant tomatoes, beans, and onions. She could milk the cows. She could sew her own clothes. But she wanted more. She wanted to study, to see new places, and to meet new people. The village was safe, but it was too small for her big dreams.
So one day she packed a small bag and took the bus to the city. The bus was long and slow. When Leyla arrived, she was tired and a little scared. The streets were full of cars, buses, and people. The buildings were very tall. There was noise everywhere. In the village she knew every face, but here she knew no one. "This is my new home now," she thought. "I must be strong."
In the first month, Leyla couldn't find a job. She went to many interviews, but she was always too nervous to answer well. She couldn't sleep at night because she worried about money. Her brother said, "Be patient. You are clever, and soon you will find something."
Every day was the same. In the morning, Leyla read the newspaper and looked for jobs. In the afternoon, she walked to shops and offices with her papers. She asked, "Do you need help here?" Most people said, "No, sorry." Some people were kind, but they could not give her a job. At night, she counted her money on the table. She had only a little, and it was getting smaller. Leyla shared a small room with a girl named Fatma. Fatma worked in a café, and she was very friendly. "Don't worry," Fatma said. "The city is hard at the start, but you are strong." In the evenings, Fatma helped Leyla with English. They read easy books together. Slowly, Leyla learned new words. She could say "hello", "thank you", and "how much is it?" It was a small start, but it made her happy.
One cold morning, Leyla had an interview at a small hotel. The manager asked hard questions, but this time she stayed calm. After thirty difficult minutes, she was able to answer everything, and the manager gave her the job. She was so happy that she couldn't stop smiling.
The hotel was old but clean. It had twenty rooms and a small garden. On her first day, Leyla was nervous again. She did not know where to put things or how to talk to the guests. But the other workers were kind. A woman named Aylin showed her everything. "Take your time," Aylin said. "You can ask me anything." At first, Leyla could only clean the rooms. She made the beds, she washed the floors, and she put fresh flowers on the tables. She worked hard and she never came late. The manager watched her, and he was happy with her work. After some weeks, he gave her new jobs. Now she could answer the phone and welcome the guests at the door. Every day, she learned something new.
At the hotel, Leyla learned fast. In six months she was able to speak English with the guests, and after a year she was able to save enough money for a small car. She still couldn't drive well at first, but she practised every weekend until she could.
The guests came from many countries. Some spoke English, some spoke other languages. At first, Leyla was afraid to talk to them. But she practised every day, and soon she was able to help them. She could tell them the way to the station. She could show them good places to eat. She could explain the times for breakfast. The guests smiled and said "thank you", and this made Leyla feel proud. The car was a big dream for her too. She wanted to drive to work and to visit her family in the village. When she had enough money, she bought a small old car. It was blue, and it was not fast, but she loved it. On Saturdays and Sundays, a friend sat next to her and helped her learn. At first she could not park well, and she was slow at the traffic lights. But she did not give up. She practised again and again, until one day she could drive alone. That day she felt free.
Leyla did not forget her old life. She remembered her first hard months in the city. So she tried to help other new people. When a young man came to the hotel to look for work, she was kind to him. "Be patient," she said, just like her brother once told her. "You can do it." She helped a new girl learn English, the same way Fatma once helped her. Leyla also called her family often. She sent them money and small gifts. In the summer, she drove to the village and stayed for a week. Her mother was very proud. "You could do so many things here," her mother said, "and now you can do even more in the city."
Today Leyla says, "In the village I could do many things, but in the city I learned that I was able to do much more." She never gave up, and that is why her life changed.
Now I am older, and I understand my aunt better. Leyla is not rich, but she is happy. She has a good job, kind friends, and a small car. She can speak English, she can drive, and she can help other people. When I feel worried about something new, I think about her. I remember that she was once nervous, tired, and afraid. But she stayed patient, she worked hard, and she never stopped trying. Last month, I visited Leyla in the city. We sat in her small kitchen and drank tea. "Ten years ago, I could not speak English, and I could not drive," she said with a smile. "Look at me now." Then she looked at me and said, "You are young. You can learn anything, if you are patient and you do not give up." I will always remember these words.

Geçmişte neyi yapabildiğini ve yapamadığını paylaş. Ask your partner about their childhood and answer with could, couldn't or was able to. Önce örnek diyaloğa bak:
Şimdi sıra sende. Talk about each of these out loud — sesli olarak, could/couldn't/was able to kullanarak. Mümkünse bir arkadaşınla konuş. Amaç: geçmiş yeterliliği rahatça anlatabilmek.
Söylediklerini yazıya dök ve öğretmenine gönder — istersen. (Write down what you said and submit it for feedback — optional.) 4-6 cümle, her birinde bir geçmiş yeterlilik yapısı kullan.
Değerlendirme öğretmenin tarafından yapılacak. (Your teacher will review your speaking task.)
10 questions on past ability — could, couldn't and was/were able to mixed. (10 soru: karışık geçmiş yeterlilik.) Her soru anında değerlendirilir.
Write and submit your paragraph; your teacher will review it. (Paragrafını yaz ve gönder; öğretmenin değerlendirecek.)
Kısa, kopuk cümleler bir yazıyı zayıf gösterir. What makes a "past" story interesting is past ability: neyi yapabildiğini, neyi yapamadığını ve sonunda neyi başardığını anlatırsın. Bir de bağlaçları (and, but, so, because, when...) eklersen, yazın gerçek bir hikâyeye dönüşür.
Farkı gör — aynı bilgiler, iki farklı yazım:
| Kopuk cümleler ✗ | Past ability + bağlaç ile ✓ |
