Bu ünitede yemek-içecekten bahsetmeyi, restoranda sipariş vermeyi ve bir iş yemeğini yönetmeyi öğreneceksin. Bunun için önce Türkçede hiç olmayan bir ayrımı öğrenmen gerekiyor: İngilizcede isimler sayılabilir (countable) ve sayılamaz (uncountable) olarak ikiye ayrılır ve bu ayrım cümlenin her yerini etkiler:
Türkçede "bir ekmek", "iki su" rahatça deriz; İngilizcede "a bread" ✗ ve "two waters" ✗ yanlıştır. Bu bölümde önce bu ayrımı, sonra some / any kurallarını, sonra da kibar teklif ve istek kalıplarını (Would you like...? / I'd like...) tek tek işleyeceğiz. Bölümün sonunda bir restoranda geçen tam bir iş yemeği diyaloğu göreceksin.
Sayılabilir isimleri tek tek sayabilirsin: bir sandviç, iki yumurta. Tekilinde a/an alırlar, çoğul olabilirler. Sayılamaz isimler ise madde, kütle veya soyut kavramlardır: su, ekmek, para. Onları sayamazsın; a/an almazlar ve çoğul olmazlar.

Miktarı tam söylemek istemediğimizde "biraz / birkaç / hiç" anlamı için some ve any kullanırız. Kural cümle türüne bağlıdır:

İş yemeğinin iki anahtar kalıbı bunlardır. Would you like...? ile teklif edersin, I'd like... (= I would like) ile kibarca istersin:

Today is an important day at Baytek. Mrs. Collins, a customer from London, is at the office, and she is a guest of the company. At one o'clock, Mark and Selin take her to lunch. The restaurant is next to the office, so the walk is very short.
Baytek is a small company in Istanbul. The company makes clean water systems for other businesses. The office is on the third floor of a tall building. It is bright and quiet. There are ten people in the team. Mark is a manager. He is thirty-five years old, and he is very friendly. Selin is an engineer. She is young, but she is very good at her job. Mark and Selin work together every day. Today they are happy, and they are also a little nervous, because Mrs. Collins is a very important customer.
In the morning, the office is busy. Selin cleans the meeting room. She puts water and cups on the table. Mark checks his email. He reads a message from Mrs. Collins. The message says, "I am happy to visit your office today." Mark smiles. He wants everything to be perfect. Selin says, "Don't worry, Mark. We are ready." The team is ready for the big day. At nine o'clock, the door opens.
Mrs. Collins arrives at nine o'clock. She is tall and kind, and she wears a blue jacket. "Good morning! Welcome to Baytek," says Mark. "It is very nice to meet you," says Selin. They shake hands and smile. Then they drink some tea in Mark's office. They talk about the new project for two hours. The project is big, and it is good for both companies. At half past twelve, everybody is a little hungry. "Let's have lunch," says Mark. "There is a nice restaurant near here."
The waiter is friendly. "Good afternoon! A table for three, please," says Mark. The waiter smiles. "Of course. Are you ready to order?" "Can we see the menu first, please?" asks Selin.
The restaurant is clean and warm. There are ten small tables and a big window. The chairs are brown, and the tablecloths are white. There are green plants near the door. Soft music is on. It is a good place for a business lunch. Mark, Selin, and Mrs. Collins sit at a table near the window. The waiter brings the menu. There are many dishes on the menu: soup, chicken, fish, rice, and salad. There are also some desserts. "Everything looks good," says Mrs. Collins.
The restaurant is near the sea. From the window, they can see boats and blue water. "What a beautiful view!" says Mrs. Collins. "Istanbul is a special city," says Mark. "It is old and new at the same time." A waiter brings some olives and cheese to the table. The olives are fresh, and they smell wonderful. "This is very kind," says Mrs. Collins. She takes a small piece of cheese.
Mrs. Collins looks at the menu for a long time. "I don't know Turkish food very well," she says. "Can you help me?" "Of course," says Selin. "The lentil soup is very popular here. It is warm and healthy." "And the salad is fresh," says Mark. "It has tomatoes, cucumbers, and cheese." "That sounds nice," says Mrs. Collins. "I am a vegetarian, so I don't eat meat or fish. But I love vegetables." The waiter waits with a smile.
Mrs. Collins is a vegetarian, so she doesn't eat meat. "I'd like the lentil soup and a salad, please," she says. "And is there any bread?" "Yes, there is some fresh bread," says the waiter.
Selin looks at the menu too. "How many people want soup?" she asks. Only Mrs. Collins wants soup. "How much bread do you want?" asks the waiter. "A little, please," says Selin. She likes the restaurant, because the waiter is kind and the food is fresh. "Would you like some water?" asks the waiter. "Yes, please. A bottle of water for the table," says Selin.
Mark wants fish, but there is a problem. "I'm sorry, there isn't any fish today," says the waiter. "No problem. I'd like the chicken, please," says Mark. Selin orders the chicken too, and some water for the table.
Now they wait for the food. They talk and laugh. After ten minutes, the waiter brings the plates. The soup is hot, and the salad is fresh and green. The chicken smells very good. "Thank you," says Mrs. Collins. They start to eat. The food is very tasty. Mrs. Collins eats her soup slowly. "This soup is wonderful," she says. Mark and Selin are happy, because their guest likes the food.
After the meal, they share some baklava for dessert because Mrs. Collins loves Turkish desserts. "It's delicious!" she says. They drink coffee and talk about the new project.
The coffee is hot and good. Mrs. Collins asks many questions about the water systems. Mark answers, and Selin draws a small plan on paper. "Your work is very good," says Mrs. Collins. "I want to buy your systems for my company in London." Mark and Selin are very happy. This is good news for Baytek. They talk about prices and dates. Mrs. Collins wants ten systems for her new office.
They also talk about their families. Mrs. Collins has two children and one grandchild. She shows a photo on her phone. "They are lovely," says Selin. Mark talks about his city and his favorite food. Mrs. Collins laughs a lot. The lunch is not only about work. It is also about friendship. Good business needs good friends. After one hour, the plates are empty and everybody is full and happy.
"Could we have the bill, please?" says Mark. Mrs. Collins is a guest, so Mark pays the bill. "Thank you for a lovely lunch," she says. "The food is delicious and the people are very warm." It is a good day for Baytek.
After lunch, they walk back to the office. The sun is bright, and the street is busy. Mrs. Collins is very happy. "I love Istanbul," she says. "The city is beautiful, and the people are kind." At the office, they say goodbye. "See you next month," says Mark. "We can sign the contract then." Mrs. Collins smiles and takes a taxi to her hotel. Mark and Selin are tired, but they are very happy. Today is a very good day for the company. They learn an important lesson: a good lunch and kind words can help a business grow.
