Ünite 5'te ofisteki nesneleri (desk, printer, computer...) ve there is / there are ile bir odada ne olduğunu öğrendin. Şimdi bir adım ötesine geçiyoruz: bir şeyin tam olarak nerede olduğunu anlatmak. "Yazıcı nerede?", "Dosyalar dolabın içinde", "Bitki iki masanın arasında" demek için edatlar (prepositions of place) gerekir:
Kısacası: edat = bir nesnenin yeri. Bu bölümde en sık kullanılan yedi edatı (in, on, under, next to, behind, in front of, between), bunları is/are ile nasıl birleştireceğini ve Where is/are...? sorularını öğreneceksin. Hepsi ofisi anlatan gerçek cümlelerle.
Bu üç edat en sık kullanılanlardır. Farkı görselleştirmek kolaydır — bir masa ve bir nesne düşün:

Bu dört edat bir nesnenin başka bir nesneye göre yerini anlatır — yan, arka, ön ve ara:

Edatlı cümlelerde fiil genellikle is ya da are'dır. Kural Ünite 5'teki gibidir: nesne tekse is, çoğulsa are:

Bir şeyin yerini sormak için Where (nerede) + is/are kullanılır. Cevap bir edatla verilir:

Selin is thirty years old. She lives in Istanbul, and she has a good job in an office. Every morning, she gets up at seven o'clock. She has breakfast, and then she goes to work by bus. The office is not far, so the bus is quick. Selin is happy because she likes her job and she likes her office.
When Selin arrives, she opens the door and says good morning to her team. Behind the door, there is a coat rack. She puts her coat and her bag there. Then she walks to her desk and turns on her computer. The office starts at nine o'clock, but Selin is always early. She likes to start her day slowly, with a cup of coffee.
Selin works at Baytek, a software company in Istanbul. Her desk is next to a big window, so she has a lot of light. On her desk, there is a computer, a black keyboard, and a small green plant. Her phone is in front of the keyboard, and a cup of coffee is next to the phone.
The computer is new, and the screen is big. Next to the computer, there is a lamp. The lamp is white, and it is very useful on dark days. Selin has two photos on her desk too. In one photo, there is her cat. The cat is black and white, and it is very cute. There is also a bottle of water on the desk, next to the lamp.
From her window, Selin can see the street. There are many cars and buses on the road. Across the street, there is a park. In the park, there are trees and some benches. On sunny days, people sit on the benches and eat their lunch. Selin likes her window very much, because the view is nice and the room is never dark.
Under the desk, there is a drawer. Selin keeps her notebooks and pens in the drawer. Her bag is on the floor, under the chair.
The drawer is not big, but it is tidy. Selin has two pens, one pencil, and a ruler in the drawer. She also keeps some paper in it. On the floor, next to her bag, there is a small box. In the box, there are her old notebooks. Selin does not need them every day, so they are on the floor and not on the desk.
Behind Selin's desk, there is a tall cabinet. The important files are in the cabinet, and a clock is on the wall above it. The printer is between the cabinet and the door, so everyone in the team can use it easily.
The cabinet is brown, and it is very tall. It has four shelves. The files on the top shelf are old, and the files on the bottom shelf are new. Selin can reach the low shelves, but she needs a chair for the top shelf. The clock above the cabinet is round and white. It is always on time, so the team is never late for a meeting.
Mark's desk is in front of Selin's desk. There is a big whiteboard on the wall next to the meeting room. Every morning, the team writes the new tasks on the whiteboard.
Mark is Selin's friend and colleague. He is a designer, and he is very kind. There are six people in the team. Their desks are in a big room, and every desk has a computer. Some desks are near the window, and some desks are near the wall. Between two desks, there is a small plant. The room is bright and clean, and everybody likes it.
The whiteboard is big and white. On the left side, there are the tasks for today. On the right side, there are the tasks for tomorrow. Next to the whiteboard, there is a box of markers. The markers are red, blue, and black. When a task is finished, Selin puts a tick next to it. At the end of the day, the whiteboard is almost empty.
Next to the meeting room, there is a small kitchen. In the kitchen, there is a coffee machine, a fridge, and a sink. The cups are in a cupboard above the sink. Every morning, Selin makes a cup of coffee, and then she goes back to her desk. At eleven o'clock, the team has a short break in the kitchen. They drink tea or coffee, and they talk about their work.
The office has many colors. The walls are light grey, and the doors are dark blue. The chairs are black, and the plants are green. Selin's cup is red, and her lamp is white. There is a big picture on the wall near the door. In the picture, there is a mountain and a blue lake. It is calm and beautiful.
The meeting room is at the end of the office. Inside the room, there is a long table with eight chairs around it. A projector is on the ceiling, and two plants are in the corner.
The team uses the meeting room every week. On Monday, they have a big meeting at ten o'clock. Everybody sits at the long table. Mark uses the projector, and he shows the new plans on the wall. The plans are on the screen, and everyone can see them. After the meeting, the team writes the important tasks on the whiteboard.
Everyone in the team is helpful. When Selin has a question, she asks Mark or the manager. The manager's office is at the end of the corridor, next to the meeting room. His door is always open. 'You can ask me anything,' he says. Selin is not afraid to ask, and she learns something new every day.
Selin's work is not difficult, but it is busy. She writes emails, she answers the phone, and she helps her team. Her phone is always in front of the keyboard, so she can find it fast. When the phone rings, Selin picks it up and says, 'Hello, this is Baytek.' She is friendly and polite, and the customers like her.
At half past twelve, it is lunch time. Selin and Mark go to a small cafe near the office. The cafe is on the corner, between a bank and a shop. They eat lunch there, and then they come back to work. In the afternoon, the office is quiet. Selin drinks her coffee, and she finishes her work before five o'clock.
On Friday, the office is happy. The week is almost over, and the weekend is near. In the afternoon, the team has a small party. There is cake on the meeting table, and there is music too. Selin and Mark clean their desks before they go home. On Saturday and Sunday, the office is closed, and it is very quiet.
Selin likes her desk very much. 'Everything is in the right place,' she says, 'so my work is easy and I am never late.'
