Bir şeyden emin olmak ya da karşındakinden onay istemek için cümlenin sonuna küçük bir soru eklersin: "You are Turkish, aren't you?" Bu koyu kısma question tag (soru eki) denir. Türkçesi çoğu zaman "değil mi?"dir. Sadece iki kelimeden oluşur — bir yardımcı fiil ve bir zamir — ama kuralı bilmezsen kolayca şaşırırsın.
Bu bölümde altın kuralı (olumlu→olumsuz, olumsuz→olumlu), be / do / have / modal eşleşmesini ve birkaç önemli istisnayı öğreneceğiz. Adım adım gidelim.
Question tag'in mantığı bir terazi gibidir: cümle bir yöne giderse, ek ters yöne gider. Cümle olumluysa ek olumsuz; cümle olumsuzsa ek olumlu olur. Ayrıca ek, cümledeki yardımcı fiili ve öznenin zamirini tekrar eder.

Cümlede be fiili (am, is, are, was, were) varsa, soru eki de aynı be fiilini kullanır. Başka yardımcıya gerek yoktur.
Cümlede be ya da modal yoksa (yani geniş zaman ya da geçmiş zaman düz fiil varsa), soru eki do / does / did ile kurulur — tıpkı normal soru yaparken olduğu gibi.

Cümlede bir modal (can, will, should, must...) ya da yardımcı have varsa, soru eki aynı kelimeyi tekrar eder.

Aylin and Mert are best friends. They are fifteen years old, and they go to the same school. Their classmate Can is a kind and funny boy, and everybody likes him. Next Saturday is Can's birthday, so Aylin and Mert want to do something special for him. They don't want a normal birthday, do they? No, they want a big surprise. During the lunch break at school, the two friends sit on a bench in the garden and start to make a plan. "This is going to be exciting, isn't it?" Aylin says with a smile.
Aylin and Mert are planning a surprise party for their friend Can. Can's birthday is on Saturday, and he doesn't know anything about the party.
First, they think about the guests. They want to invite all their friends from class, but the party must stay a secret. "We can send the invitations by message, can't we?" Mert says. "Yes, but we mustn't add Can to the group," Aylin answers. They also make a short list on Aylin's phone: balloons, plates, snacks, and of course a big cake. Aylin loves lists, and she checks every item twice. "A good plan makes a good party, doesn't it?" she says. Mert laughs and agrees.
"We are going to have the party at your house, aren't we?" Aylin asks. "Yes, we are," Mert says. "My house is big enough, isn't it? We can put the table near the window." "That's a good idea. You've already bought the cake, haven't you?" Aylin asks. "No, not yet. I'll buy it tomorrow morning."
"Okay. Can loves chocolate cake, doesn't he? Let's get a big chocolate one, shall we?" "Perfect. And we need to tell the other friends the time. They don't know it yet, do they?" "No, they don't. I'll send a message tonight. Everyone must arrive before eight, because Can comes at half past eight."
"Good. Aylin, you can bring the music, can't you? You have those great speakers." "Of course I can. Don't worry about the music. But we mustn't tell Can anything, must we?" "No, we mustn't! It's a surprise. Close the door quietly when he comes, will you? We don't want him to hear us."
"I won't say a word. This is going to be a wonderful evening, isn't it?" "It is. Can is going to be so happy. He never expects a party, does he?" "Never! That's why it will be a great surprise."
The days before the party go slowly for Aylin and Mert. At school, they smile at Can but they say nothing about Saturday, do they? It is not easy to keep such a big secret! On Friday night, Aylin sends a quiet message to all the guests: "Please come before eight, and don't tell Can, will you?" Everyone answers quickly, and everyone is excited. Aylin cannot sleep well because she thinks about the party all night. She is a little nervous, but she is very happy too. Tomorrow is the big day, isn't it?
On Saturday afternoon, the two friends arrive early at Mert's house. There is a lot to do, isn't there? They put a big table near the window, just like Mert said before. Aylin blows up the colourful balloons, and Mert puts the plates and the snacks on the table. Early in the morning, Mert went to the shop and bought the big chocolate cake, and now it sits in the middle of the table. It looks wonderful. "Everything is ready, isn't it?" Aylin asks. "Almost," Mert says. "We only need our friends now."
Before eight o'clock, the guests start to arrive one by one. Everybody is quiet, and nobody makes a loud sound. The friends turn off the lights and wait behind the sofa. It is difficult to stay so quiet, isn't it? Some of them want to laugh, but they cover their mouths. Aylin looks at the clock again and again. At half past eight, they hear Can at the door. "Remember to be quiet, won't you?" Aylin whispers to everyone. She closes the door softly, and the whole room waits in the dark.
Then Can opens the door and walks in. Suddenly, everybody turns on the lights and shouts, "Surprise! Happy birthday, Can!" Can is so surprised that he cannot speak for a moment. His face is bright and happy, and his eyes are wide. "You planned all of this for me, didn't you?" he says to his friends. "Of course we did," Aylin answers with a big smile. "You're our best friend, aren't you? So you deserve a wonderful party." Can thanks everyone, and then he sees the chocolate cake. "That's my favourite, isn't it?" he laughs. The friends eat cake, listen to Aylin's music, and dance together. It is a wonderful evening, and nobody forgets it. A good surprise makes everyone happy, doesn't it?

Sadece düz cümleler bir konuşmayı yapay gösterir. What makes a conversation sound real is question tags: onlarla bilgi doğrular ve karşındakinden onay istersin. Bir de bağlaçları (and, but, so, because, when...) eklersen, sohbetin akıcı ve gerçekçi olur.
