Grammar: Adverbs of Manner & Comparison

Read the rules, study the examples, then do the exercises. (Kuralları oku, örnekleri incele, sonra alıştırmaları yap.)

Neden Zarflar?

  • She sings beautifully.Çok güzel şarkı söyler.
  • Please drive carefully.Lütfen dikkatlice sür.
  • He speaks English well.İngilizceyi iyi konuşur.
  • My brother runs faster than me.Kardeşim benden daha hızlı koşar.

Bu bölümde şunları öğreneceğiz: -ly ile zarf yapmak, düzensiz zarflar (well, fast, hard...), zarfın cümledeki yeri, ve zarfları karşılaştırmak (more...ly, -er, the ...est). Adım adım gidelim.

1. -ly ile Zarf Yapmak (Forming -ly Adverbs)

Çoğu biçim zarfı, bir sıfata -ly eki eklenerek yapılır: slow → slowly. But watch the spelling — yazımda küçük değişiklikler olur. Aşağıdaki tablo kuralları özetliyor:

KuralSıfatZarfÖrnek
normal + lyquickquicklyShe works quickly.
-y → -ilyhappyhappilyThey played happily.
-le → -lyterribleterriblyHe sang terribly.
-ic → -icallyautomaticautomaticallyIt opens automatically.
Kolay hatırlatma
  • Zarf, fiilin nasıl yapıldığını söyler: "How does she sing? → beautifully."
  • Yazıma dikkat: happy → happily (happyly değil), easy → easily.
  • Sıfat "-le" ile bitiyorsa "e" düşer: simple → simply, terrible → terribly.

2. Sıfat mı, Zarf mı? (Adjective or Adverb?)

Bu, Türkçe konuşanların en sık karıştırdığı konu. A sıfat bir ismi anlatır; bir zarf bir fiili anlatır. Kısacası: ismin yanında sıfat, fiilin yanında zarf kullan.

Sıfat (ismi anlatır)Zarf (fiili anlatır)
She is a careful driver. She drives carefully.
He is a good singer. He sings well.
They are quick workers. They work quickly.
Dikkat
  • Fiilden sonra zarf gelir: "He sings well." ✓ — "He sings good."
  • İsimden önce sıfat gelir: "a good singer" ✓ — "a well singer"

3. Düzensiz Zarflar (Irregular Adverbs)

Bazı zarflar -ly almaz. Some are the same as the adjective (fast, hard, late, early, high), and one is completely different: good'un zarfı well'dir.

SıfatZarfÖrnek
goodwellShe plays the piano well.
fastfastHe drives very fast.
hardhardThey work hard.
early / lateearly / lateI got up early.
Tuzağa dikkat
  • fast, hard, late sıfat ve zarf olarak aynı yazılır — "fastly" diye bir kelime yoktur.
  • hardly = "neredeyse hiç" (çalışmak anlamındaki "hard" değil): "I hardly know him." = Onu neredeyse hiç tanımıyorum.
  • lately = "son zamanlarda" — "late" (geç) ile karıştırma.

4. Zarfın Yeri (Position of Adverbs)

Biçim zarfı genellikle fiilden sonra, ya da bir nesne varsa nesneden sonra gelir. The adverb usually does not go between the verb and the object — bu çok yaygın bir hatadır.

Doğru ✓Yanlış ✗
She speaks English fluently. She speaks fluently English.
He opened the door quietly. He opened quietly the door.
They finished the work quickly. They finished quickly the work.
Nasıl yapılır
  • Nesne yoksa: özne + fiil + zarf"He runs quickly."
  • Nesne varsa: özne + fiil + nesne + zarf"She reads the book carefully."

5. Zarfları Karşılaştırmak (Comparing Adverbs)

Tıpkı sıfatlar gibi zarfları da karşılaştırabiliriz. The rule depends on the adverb: kısa/düzensiz zarflara -er / -est, -ly zarflarına ise more / the most eklenir.

TürKarşılaştırma (-er / more)Enüstünlük (the -est / the most)
kısa/düzensiz: fast, hard, earlyfast → fasterthe fastest
-ly zarflar: slowly, carefullyslowly → more slowlythe most slowly
düzensiz: well / badlywell → better · badly → worsethe best · the worst
  • He runs faster than his brother.Kardeşinden daha hızlı koşar.
  • Please speak more slowly.Lütfen daha yavaş konuş.
  • Of all the team, she plays the best.Takımın tamamında en iyi o oynar.
as ... as (eşitlik)
  • İki şey eşitse: "He works as hard as me." = Benim kadar çok çalışır.
  • Olumsuzda: "She doesn't drive as carefully as her father."

6. Yaygın Hatalar (Common Mistakes)

Türkçe konuşanların zarflarda en sık yaptığı hatalar aşağıda. Kendi cümlelerini yazarken bu listeyle kontrol et:

Yanlış ✗Doğru ✓Neden?
He sings very good.He sings very well.Fiilden sonra zarf: good → well.
She runs fastly. She runs fast."fastly" yoktur; fast düzensizdir.
Please drive careful. Please drive carefully.Fiili anlatır → -ly zarfı gerekir.
He speaks slowlier than me.He speaks more slowly than me.-ly zarfı more ile karşılaştırılır.
My English is more good now.My English is better now.good/well düzensiz: better (more good değil).
She opened quietly the window. She opened the window quietly.Zarf, fiil ile nesnenin arasına girmez.

7. Uygulama: Antrenman (Model Dialogue)

Şimdi her şeyi bir arada görelim. Two friends talk about a basketball game and how the players play. Koyu yazılan zarflara ve karşılaştırmalara dikkat ederek iki kez oku:

  • — How does the new player play?Yeni oyuncu nasıl oynuyor?
  • — He plays really well! He runs faster than anyone on the team.Gerçekten iyi oynuyor! Takımdaki herkesten daha hızlı koşuyor.
  • — And Deniz? Two years ago she played badly.Peki Deniz? İki yıl önce kötü oynuyordu.
  • — Now she plays much better. She practises the most seriously of all.Şimdi çok daha iyi oynuyor. Herkesten en ciddi şekilde çalışıyor.
  • — Does the coach explain the plans clearly?Antrenör planları anlaşılır biçimde mi anlatıyor?
  • — Yes, she speaks slowly and carefully, so we all understand easily.Evet, yavaş ve dikkatlice konuşuyor, bu yüzden hepimiz kolayca anlıyoruz.
Kendini test et
  • Diyalogda kaç tane -ly zarfı var? (Cevap: 5 — seriously, clearly, slowly, carefully, easily)
  • "He plays really well" — buradaki well hangi kelimenin zarfıdır? (Cevap: good)
  • "She plays much better" cümlesinde better hangi zarfın karşılaştırma hâlidir? (Cevap: well)

Reading: Practice Makes Perfect

Read the text, then answer the questions. (Metni oku, sonra soruları cevapla.)

Before You Read (Okumadan Önce)

İyi okuyucular metne hazırlıklı girer. Before you read, think about these three questions (cevapları yazmana gerek yok):

  • Think about a skill you have. How did you do it at first, and how do you do it now? (Bir yeteneğini düşün. Başta nasıl yapıyordun, şimdi nasıl yapıyorsun?)
  • The text says how people play a sport. Which -ly words will you probably see? (Metin insanların bir sporu nasıl oynadığını anlatıyor. Hangi -ly kelimelerini göreceksin?)
  • Look at the title. Do you think the story is about getting worse or getting better? (Başlığa bak. Sence hikâye kötüleşmekten mi yoksa gelişmekten mi bahsediyor?)
Nasıl okumalı?
  • 1. tur: Metni durmadan, hızlıca oku. Konuyu yakala; her kelimeyi anlamak zorunda değilsin.
  • 2. tur: Soruları oku, sonra cevapları metinde ara. -ly zarflarına ve karşılaştırmalara (faster, better, more...) dikkat et.

Words to spot (Metinde geçen, Speaking bölümünden tanıdığın kelimeler): quickly · carefully · well · badly · hard · faster · better · seriously · practise · improve

Practice Makes Perfect

Kerem loves basketball more than any other sport. Two years ago, however, he played very badly. He could not throw the ball well, and he ran quite slowly. After every match his coach said the same thing: "If you practise hard, you will play better."

When Kerem was younger, he really wanted to be a good player, but the game was difficult for him. At school, his classmates ran quickly and passed the ball easily, and Kerem often felt sad. Sometimes he dropped the ball, and sometimes he shot badly and missed the basket. He watched the other boys and girls carefully, and he saw that they moved more smoothly than him. "Why do they play so well?" he asked himself quietly. He did not know the answer yet, but he did not want to stop. Basketball was still his favourite thing after school.

So Kerem started to work harder than before. Every morning he ran quickly around the park, and every evening he threw the ball at the basket carefully, again and again. He listened to his coach patiently and never gave up. Slowly but surely, he improved.

His new routine was not always easy. On school days, Kerem woke up early and practised for twenty minutes before class. In the evenings, he finished his homework first, and then he went to the small court near his home. He practised more regularly than most of his friends, because he really loved the sport. At the weekend, he trained for two hours, and he rested carefully so his legs did not hurt. Little by little, his hands became stronger and his feet moved faster. He was learning that hard work is more useful than luck.

Today Kerem plays much better than last year. He runs faster than most of his friends, and he shoots more accurately than anyone else on the team. He also listens carefully when the coach explains a new plan clearly.

Last month, Kerem's school played an important game against another class. The gym was full, and everyone shouted loudly. At first Kerem felt nervous, but he breathed slowly and remembered his coach's words. He passed the ball quickly to his teammates and moved cleverly around the court. Near the end of the game, he shot the ball carefully, and it went into the basket perfectly. His team won by four points! His classmates cheered happily and said, "You played brilliantly today." Kerem smiled, because now he could see how much he had improved.

Kerem's friends are good at different things, and he likes to compare them kindly. His friend Ali draws beautifully and finishes his pictures more quickly than anyone in the art club. Another friend, Zeynep, speaks English very well and reads more fluently than the rest of the class. Their classmate Emre plays the guitar softly and sings more sweetly than anyone in the music room. "Everyone is good at something," Kerem thinks. He believes that people become skilful when they practise the thing they love. Just like in basketball, if you do your hobby regularly and carefully, you improve day by day. Talent is nice, but effort matters more, and patient students always learn the fastest in the end.

His best friend, Deniz, plays well too. She jumps higher and moves more quickly than Kerem. "You move gracefully, like a dancer," Kerem tells her, and Deniz laughs happily. Of all the players, she practises the most seriously, so she rarely makes a mistake.

Deniz and Kerem often practise together after school. She is patient, and she explains new moves clearly, so Kerem learns quickly. "Watch me carefully," she says, and then she jumps and turns gracefully. Kerem tries to copy her, but he still moves a little more slowly than she does. They laugh together when he makes a mistake, and then they try again seriously. Deniz says that good friends help each other improve. Because they train together, both players get better faster than before, and their friendship grows stronger every week.

Their coach is very proud of them. "You two work the hardest, and you learn fast," she says warmly. "Remember: the players who try hardest always improve the most." Kerem and Deniz smile at each other. They know that if they keep practising patiently, they will play even better next season.

At home, Kerem's family is proud of him too. His younger sister watches his games excitedly, and his father drives him to the sports club every Saturday. "You work harder than I did at your age," his father says warmly. Kerem's mother always tells him to sleep well and eat healthily before a match. On the team, some players are taller and some run faster, but the coach says the most important thing is to try your best. Kerem now knows that if you practise carefully and patiently, you can slowly become the player you want to be.

Speaking: Say How & Compare

Play a "How do you do it?" game, then do the extra practice quiz. (Bir "Nasıl yapıyorsun?" oyunu oyna, sonra ekstra alıştırma testini yap.)

Warm-up: The "How?" Game (Nasıl? Oyunu)

Bir eylem söyle; partnerin onu nasıl yaptığını bir zarfla anlatsın — sonra iki kişiyi karşılaştırın. Say an action, and your partner answers with an adverb of manner, then makes a comparison. Önce örnek diyaloğa bak:

A:How do you ride your bike?Bisikletini nasıl sürersin?
B:I ride carefully. My brother rides faster than me.Dikkatlice sürerim. Kardeşim benden daha hızlı sürer.
A:Good! How does your friend sing?Güzel! Arkadaşın nasıl şarkı söyler?
B:She sings really well — much better than me!Gerçekten iyi söyler — benden çok daha iyi!
A:And how do you study?Peki nasıl çalışırsın?
B:I study hard, but Ali studies more seriously than everyone.Sıkı çalışırım ama Ali herkesten daha ciddi çalışır.
A:Nice — your turn to ask!Harika — sorma sırası sende!

Your Turn: Say How (Nasıl Yaptığını Söyle)

Şimdi sıra sende. Say each of these out loud with an adverb of manner — sesli olarak, sonra bir karşılaştırma ekle. Mümkünse bir arkadaşınla oyna. Amaç: bir eylemi nasıl yaptığını rahatça anlatabilmek.

  • how you speak English (İngilizceyi nasıl konuşursun) → "I speak English ..."
  • how you do a sport or hobby (bir sporu/hobiyi nasıl yaparsın) → "I play ... and I run ..."
  • how a family member works or drives → "My ... works/drives ... than me."
  • who does something best in your family (ailende bir şeyi en iyi kim yapar) → "My ... does it the best / the most ..."
İpucu — akıcı konuşmak için
  • -ly zarfı için more, kısa/düzensiz zarf için -er kullan: more slowly / faster — Grammar bölümündeki mantığı uygula.
  • Cümleleri bağlaçlarla uzat: "She sings beautifully and plays the piano better than me."

Optional: Write & Submit (İsteğe Bağlı: Yaz ve Gönder)

Söylediklerini yazıya dök ve öğretmenine gönder — istersen. (Write down what you said and submit it for feedback — optional.) 4-6 cümle, her birinde bir biçim zarfı ya da karşılaştırma kullan.

Writing: How the People in My Life Do Things

Write and submit your paragraph; your teacher will review it. (Paragrafını yaz ve gönder; öğretmenin değerlendirecek.)

Zarflar Yazını Zenginleştirir (Richer Writing)

Kısa, kopuk cümleler bir yazıyı zayıf gösterir. What makes writing sound natural and mature is adverbs: bir eylemin nasıl yapıldığını anlatır ve kişileri karşılaştırırlar. Bir de bağlaçları (and, but, so, because, when...) eklersen, yazın gerçek bir metne dönüşür.

Farkı gör — aynı bilgiler, iki farklı yazım:

Kopuk cümleler ✗Zarf + bağlaç ile ✓
My sister sings. She is good. My brother sings too. He is not so good. My sister sings beautifully, and she performs much better than my brother, because she practises the most seriously in our family.
Kural
  • Yazında en az 3 biçim zarfı kullan (quickly, carefully, well, hard, fast...).
  • En az bir karşılaştırma ekle (faster / more slowly / better / the most seriously).
  • Ayrıca en az 3 bağlaç kullan: and, but, so, because, when, after, before.

Sample Answer (~125 words) The person who works hardest in my family is my mother. She does everything quickly and carefully, and she cooks much better than anyone else at home. When she is busy, she still smiles warmly, so we all feel calm.

My brother and I love sport, but we play very differently. He runs faster than me, but I shoot the ball more accurately, because I practise more seriously. Two years ago I played badly, and now I play well — practice really helps!

My father drives slowly and carefully, so I always feel safe in the car. He also speaks English fluently, and he learns new things fast. I want to work as hard as him and improve a little more every day.
