Read the rules, study the examples, then do the exercises. (Kuralları oku, örnekleri incele, sonra alıştırmaları yap.)
Geçmişte neyi yapabildiğini ya da yapamadığını anlatmak istediğinde, present'teki can / can't yetmez — zamanı geçmişe taşıman gerekir. Bunun için üç yapı kullanırız: could, couldn't ve was / were able to. Bak, aynı cümle geçmişte nasıl değişiyor: "I can swim." (şimdi) → "When I was five, I could swim." (geçmişte).
Bu bölümde üç yapıyı öğreneceğiz: could (genel geçmiş yeterlilik), couldn't (olumsuz) ve was / were able to (özellikle tek seferlik bir başarı için). Then we will learn the important difference between them.
| Özne | could + yalın fiil | Anlam |
|---|---|---|
| I / You | I could swim | yüzebilirdim |
| He / She / It | She could sing | şarkı söyleyebilirdi |
| We / They | They could read | okuyabilirlerdi |
Geçmişte bir şeyi yapamadığını söylemek için couldn't (= could not) kullanırız. Türkçedeki "-emedim / -amadım" ekine denk gelir. Yine özne değişse de şekli aynıdır ve fiil yalın kalır. Hem genel yetersizlik hem de tek bir olaydaki başarısızlık için kullanılabilir.
be able to, "yapabilmek / -meyi başarmak" demektir. Geçmiş için be fiilini geçmişe çeviririz: was (I / he / she / it) ve were (you / we / they). Ardından her zaman to + yalın fiil gelir. Dikkat: burada özneye göre was mı were mi seçmen gerekir — could'un aksine şekil değişir.
| Özne | was / were able to + fiil | Anlam |
|---|---|---|
| I / He / She / It | He was able to finish | bitirebildi / bitirmeyi başardı |
| You / We / They | We were able to escape | kaçmayı başardık |
Bu ünitenin en önemli kuralı budur, dikkatle oku. İki yapı çoğu zaman aynı görünse de tek bir durumda ayrışır: geçmişte tek bir kez başarılan bir eylem. Böyle bir başarı için could kullanılmaz; was / were able to gerekir.
| Durum | Kullan | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Genel yetenek (bir dönem boyunca) | could / was able to | I could swim as a child. |
| Tek seferlik başarı (belirli bir an) | was/were able to ✓ (could ✗) | The race was hard, but I was able to win. |
| Olumsuz (her iki durumda) | couldn't = wasn't able to | I couldn't win the race. |
Soru sorarken Could özneden önce gelir: "Could you swim when you were five?" — yardımcı fiile (did) gerek yoktur. was/were able to ile soru için be fiilini öne alırız: "Were you able to finish?"
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Could you ride a bike? | Yes, I could. | No, I couldn't. |
| Were they able to come? | Yes, they were. | No, they weren't. |
Türkçe konuşanların geçmiş yeterlilik yapılarında en sık yaptığı hatalar aşağıda. Kendi cümlelerini yazarken bu listeyle kontrol et:
| Yanlış ✗ | Doğru ✓ | Neden? |
|---|---|---|
| When I was five, I could to swim. | When I was five, I could swim. | could'dan sonra "to" gelmez, yalın fiil gelir. |
| She could sang very well. | She could sing very well. | could + yalın fiil (sang değil sing). |
| The test was hard, but I could pass it. | ...but I was able to pass it. | Tek seferlik başarı için was able to, could değil. |
| They was able to win the match. | They were able to win the match. | Çoğul özne (they) → were able to. |
| I didn't could find my phone. | I couldn't find my phone. | couldn't zaten olumsuz; "didn't" eklenmez. |
| Did you could ride a bike? | Could you ride a bike? | Soruda "did" yok; Could öne gelir. |

Words to spot (Metinde geçen, Speaking bölümünden tanıdığın kelimeler): village · grow · shy · nervous · audience · difficult · save · practise · could · couldn't · was able to
Two years ago, my friend Deniz moved from a small village to a big city and started a new school. Life in the village was simple. She could ride her bike everywhere, she could grow tomatoes in the garden, and she could fix almost anything on her old bike. But she couldn't speak much English, and she couldn't play any instrument. For a village girl, the new school was strange and difficult.
In the village, Deniz was never bored. Every day after school she could play football with her cousins in the fields. She could swim in the small river in summer, and she could climb the tall tree behind her house. Her mother could cook wonderful village food, and her father could tell funny old stories. At the weekend, the whole family could sit together and sing. For Deniz, life in the village was easy and full of friends.
Moving day was not easy. Deniz and her family packed everything into a small van. She said goodbye to her cousins and her old bike, and she couldn't stop crying. The city was big, loud and grey. On her first morning at the new school, she stood at the gate and couldn't move. There were so many new faces. She wanted to be brave, but she felt very small and alone.
In the first weeks, Deniz couldn't make any friends. She wanted to talk to her classmates, but she was always too shy and nervous to say much. She couldn't sleep at night because she worried about school. Her brother said, "Be patient. You are clever, and soon you will find good friends."
The lessons were also very hard for her. In the village school the classes were small, but here there were thirty students in one room. She couldn't understand the fast English lessons, and she couldn't follow the science teacher. At lunch time everyone sat with their friends, but Deniz sat alone. She missed her cousins, her bike and her garden. Some nights she wanted to go back home to the village.
Then her brother had an idea. He gave Deniz his old guitar and said, "Music is easy to share. You don't need many words to make friends." At first Deniz couldn't play even one song. Her fingers hurt and the notes sounded wrong. But she was patient. Every evening she practised in her room for one hour. Slowly, week by week, she got better, and soon she could play two or three easy songs.
The week before the talent show, Deniz was very nervous. She couldn't sleep well, and she couldn't eat much at breakfast. "What if I forget the song? What if the audience laughs?" she thought. Her brother said, "You practised hard. You are ready. Just be calm and enjoy it." Deniz took a deep breath. She knew she couldn't be perfect, but she wanted to try her best.
One Friday, the school had a talent show. Deniz loved music, so she decided to play the guitar on the stage. The audience was big and the song was difficult, but this time she stayed calm. After three difficult minutes, she was able to play the whole song, and everyone clapped. She was so happy that she couldn't stop smiling.
After the last note, a girl named Elif came to talk to her. "That was great! Could you teach me?" she asked. Deniz was so surprised that at first she couldn't answer. Then she smiled and said yes. That evening, for the first time, Deniz walked home with a new friend. She couldn't wait to tell her brother the good news.
After the show, Deniz made friends fast. In a short time she was able to speak English with the other students, and after a few months she was able to save enough money for a new guitar. She still couldn't play difficult songs well at first, but she practised every weekend until she could.
Life at the new school got better and better. Deniz joined the music club, and she also joined the school volleyball team. Her new teammates were kind and clever, and they could help her with her homework. On Saturdays the club met to play music together, and Deniz was never shy on the stage again. She could laugh, talk and play with her friends for hours.
Today Deniz says, "In the village I could do many things, but at the new school I learned that I was able to do much more." She never gave up, and that is why everything changed.
Deniz's story teaches us something simple. When you move to a new place, the first days can be difficult, and you may feel shy or nervous. You may even think, "I can't do this." But if you are patient and you practise a little every day, one day you will be able to do it too. Deniz couldn't speak English or play the guitar before, but now she can do both, and she has many good friends.
Choose the correct answer. (Doğru cevabı seç.)
Are these sentences true or false? (Bu cümleler doğru mu yanlış mı?)
Complete the sentences with the correct past-ability form (could / couldn't / was able to) from the text. (Cümleleri metindeki doğru geçmiş yeterlilik yapısıyla tamamla.)
Write your answer in your own words. (Cevabını kendi cümlelerinle yaz.) Bu sorular otomatik puanlanmaz.
1. What could Deniz do in the village?
2. What happened at the talent show, and what was she able to do?
3. Why did Deniz's life change at the new school?
Metinde could, couldn't ve was/were able to yapılarını bul — her biri geçiyor. (Writing bölümünde bu yapıları kendi yazında kullanacaksın.) Bulduklarını not et, sonra kontrol et.
Play a memory game, then do the extra practice quiz. (Bir anı oyunu oyna, sonra ekstra alıştırma testini yap.)
Geçmişte neyi yapabildiğini ve yapamadığını paylaş. Ask your partner about their childhood and answer with could, couldn't or was able to. Önce örnek diyaloğa bak:
Şimdi sıra sende. Talk about each of these out loud — sesli olarak, could/couldn't/was able to kullanarak. Mümkünse bir arkadaşınla konuş. Amaç: geçmiş yeterliliği rahatça anlatabilmek.
Söylediklerini yazıya dök ve öğretmenine gönder — istersen. (Write down what you said and submit it for feedback — optional.) 4-6 cümle, her birinde bir geçmiş yeterlilik yapısı kullan.
Değerlendirme öğretmenin tarafından yapılacak. (Your teacher will review your speaking task.)
10 questions on past ability — could, couldn't and was/were able to mixed. (10 soru: karışık geçmiş yeterlilik.) Her soru anında değerlendirilir.
Write and submit your paragraph; your teacher will review it. (Paragrafını yaz ve gönder; öğretmenin değerlendirecek.)
Kısa, kopuk cümleler bir yazıyı zayıf gösterir. What makes a "past" story interesting is past ability: neyi yapabildiğini, neyi yapamadığını ve sonunda neyi başardığını anlatırsın. Bir de bağlaçları (and, but, so, because, when...) eklersen, yazın gerçek bir hikâyeye dönüşür.
Farkı gör — aynı bilgiler, iki farklı yazım:
| Kopuk cümleler ✗ | Past ability + bağlaç ile ✓ |
|---|---|
| I was a child. I couldn't swim. I practised. I learned. Now I swim well. | When I was a child, I couldn't swim, but I practised every summer until I was able to swim well, and now I love the sea. |
A2 boyunca öğrendiğin bağlaçlar. This is your toolbox — bunları geçmiş yeterlilik yapılarıyla birlikte kullan:
| Bağlaç | Anlamı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| and | ve | I could read and write early. |
| but | ama | I could sing but I couldn't dance. |
| so | bu yüzden | It was dark, so we couldn't see. |
| because | çünkü | I couldn't sleep because I was worried. |
| until | -e kadar | I practised until I was able to drive. |
Write about what you could and couldn't do when you were younger, and one thing you finally managed to do. (Küçükken neleri yapabildiğini, neleri yapamadığını ve sonunda başardığın bir şeyi anlat.) Use past ability.
Değerlendirme öğretmenin tarafından yapılacak. (Your teacher will evaluate your writing.)
Mixed questions from the whole unit, then check what you can do. (Ünitenin tamamından karışık sorular; sonra neler yapabildiğini işaretle.)
14 questions: grammar + vocabulary + reading. (14 soru: gramer + kelime + okuma.) Her soru anında değerlendirilir.
Tick what you can do now. Honest answers help your teacher. (Şu an yapabildiklerini işaretle. Dürüst cevaplar öğretmenine yol gösterir.)
