IELTS dünyanın en yaygın akademik İngilizce yeterlilik sınavı: üniversite başvurusundan göçe, iş vizesinden meslek onayına kadar geçerli. Bu rehber sınavın ne olduğunu, Academic ile General Training farkını, dört bölümün yapısını, 0–9 band skalasının ne anlama geldiğini, overall skorunun nasıl hesaplandığını ve sıfırdan hedefe hazırlık yol haritasını Türk adaylar için baştan sona anlatır.
IELTS is the world's most widely used academic English proficiency test: valid for everything from university applications to immigration, from work visas to professional registration. This guide explains, from start to finish and for Turkish candidates, what the exam is, the difference between Academic and General Training, the structure of the four sections, what the 0–9 band scale means, how the overall score is calculated, and a preparation roadmap that takes you from zero to your target.
Hangi sınavın kabul edildiğini her zaman başvuracağın kurumun kendi sayfasından doğrula — bazı kurumlar yalnızca birini kabul eder.
IELTS (the International English Language Testing System) is an international exam that measures the language proficiency of people whose first language is not English. It is run jointly by the British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia and Cambridge University Press & Assessment. The test measures four language skills separately: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The result is not given as pass/fail but as a band between 0 and 9 for each skill and overall.
IELTS is not an "elimination" exam; it measures your level like a ruler. That is why there is no single threshold everyone must clear — the institution you apply to sets the acceptance cut-off. Results are generally valid for 2 years.
Note: IELTS is an academic language exam; it has alternatives such as TOEFL, PTE Academic, the Duolingo English Test and Cambridge C1/C2. Always verify which exam is accepted on the institution's own page — some accept only one of them.
IELTS iki modülde sunulur. Listening ve Speaking bölümleri iki modülde tamamen aynıdır; fark yalnızca Reading ve Writing bölümlerindedir. Doğru modülü seçmek kritik: yanlış modülle aldığın sonuç istenen yerde geçersiz olabilir.
| Ölçüt | Academic | General Training |
|---|---|---|
IELTS is offered in two modules. The Listening and Speaking sections are exactly the same in both modules; the only difference is in the Reading and Writing sections. Choosing the right module is critical: a result taken with the wrong module may be invalid where it is needed.
| Criterion | Academic | General Training |
|---|---|---|
| Who it is for | University, master's, doctorate; academic professional registration | Immigration (Australia/Canada/NZ), work, secondary/below-degree programmes |
| Reading texts | Books, magazines, academic articles — abstract, argumentative, long | Advertisements, brochures, manuals, workplace documents + one general text |
| Writing Task 1 | Describing a graph/table/map/process (report register) | Letter writing (formal / semi-formal / informal) |
| Writing Task 2 | Academic essay — similar in both modules, but a more academic tone is expected in Academic | |
| Listening & Speaking | Identical in both modules | |
| Perceived difficulty | Reading is generally more dense/academic | Reading is more everyday, but the conversion to band is stricter |
To get the same band in General Training Reading, you need to answer more questions correctly than in Academic, because the texts are considered easier. For example, 30 correct out of 40 might be ~7.0 in Academic but around ~6.0 in General Training. Do not fall for the "General is easier" fallacy — if your goal is immigration and your band cut-off is high, you also have to prepare seriously for GT.
Toplam sınav yaklaşık 2 saat 45 dakika sürer. Listening, Reading ve Writing aynı oturumda arasız yapılır. Speaking ise yüz yüze (veya video) bir görüşmedir ve aynı gün ya da ±7 gün içinde ayrı planlanabilir.
| Bölüm | Süre | İçerik / soru | Not |
|---|---|---|---|
Boşluk doldurma, çoktan seçmeli, eşleştirme, başlık eşleştirme, True/False/Not Given, harita/plan etiketleme, tamamlama tabloları… IELTS aynı beceriyi farklı formatlarda sınar. Format tanımak zamanın yarısıdır.
Reading’de 40 soruyu 60 dakikada, yani soru başına ~1.5 dakikada yapman gerekir. Writing’de plan + yazma + kontrol 60 dakikaya sığmalı. Zaman yönetimi başlı başına bir beceridir.
The whole exam takes about 2 hours 45 minutes. Listening, Reading and Writing are done in the same session without breaks. Speaking is a face-to-face (or video) interview and may be scheduled separately on the same day or within ±7 days.
| Section | Time | Content / questions | Note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Listening | ~30 min + 10 min transfer* | 4 recordings / 40 questions | Same in both modules; audio plays once |
| Reading | 60 min | 3 texts / 40 questions | No extra transfer time — write your answers within the time |
| Writing | 60 min | Task 1 (≥150 words) + Task 2 (≥250 words) | Task 2 carries more weight; split your time 20+40 |
| Speaking | 11–14 min | 3 parts (interview + card talk + discussion) | May be a separate session; face to face with an examiner |
*Transfer time exists only in the paper Listening: after the 30-minute recording you are given 10 minutes to copy your answers onto the answer sheet. In the computer test this is about 2 minutes because you have already typed your answers on screen.
Gap-fill, multiple choice, matching, matching headings, True/False/Not Given, map/plan labelling, table completion… IELTS tests the same skill in different formats. Recognising the format is half the time.
In Reading you have to do 40 questions in 60 minutes — that is about 1.5 minutes per question. In Writing, planning + writing + checking must all fit into 60 minutes. Time management is a skill in itself.
| Band | Etiket | CEFR | Ne anlama gelir | Tipik hedef |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | Expert | C2 | Tam akıcı, hatasız, incelikli dil kullanımı | Nadir; üst düzey akademik/yeterlilik |
| 8 | Very Good | C1 | Çok az, sistemsiz hata; karmaşık dili doğal kullanır | En rekabetçi programlar, burslar |
| 7 | Good | C1 | İyi hakimiyet; bazen yanlış kullanım/uygunsuzluk | Yüksek lisans, hemşirelik, hukuk (7.0–7.5) |
| 6.5 | Competent+ | B2/C1 | Genelde etkili; karmaşık dilde bazı hatalar | Birçok yüksek lisans; iyi lisans programı |
| 6 | Competent | B2 | Genel etkili hakimiyet; hata ve yanlış anlama olur | Çoğu lisans; standart vize eşiği |
| 5.5 | Modest+ | B1/B2 | Kısmi hakimiyet; anlamı çoğunlukla taşır | Foundation/hazırlık yıllı kabuller |
| 5 | Modest | B1 | Temel iletişim; sık hata, sınırlı ifade | Ön koşullu / şartlı kabuller |
Soru: “Neden bu şehirde yaşamayı seviyorsun?”
IELTS bands correspond roughly to CEFR levels. The table below shows what each band expresses and which goal it suits. The coloured labels will be used later to compare how the same idea looks at different bands in writing and speaking.
Most institutions require not only an overall band but also a minimum band in each skill (e.g. "overall 6.5, at least 6.0 in each section"). Your weakest skill often limits you; do not push one skill very high while neglecting another.
| Band | Label | CEFR | What it means | Typical goal |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | Expert | C2 | Fully fluent, error-free, nuanced use of language | Rare; top-level academic/proficiency |
| 8 | Very Good | C1 | Very few, non-systematic errors; handles complex language naturally | The most competitive programmes, scholarships |
| 7 | Good | C1 | Good command; occasional misuse/inappropriacy | Master's, nursing, law (7.0–7.5) |
| 6.5 | Competent+ | B2/C1 | Generally effective; some errors with complex language | Many master's programmes; a good undergraduate programme |
| 6 | Competent | B2 | Generally effective command; errors and misunderstandings occur | Most undergraduate programmes; standard visa threshold |
| 5.5 | Modest+ | B1/B2 | Partial command; usually conveys meaning | Foundation/preparatory-year admissions |
| 5 | Modest | B1 | Basic communication; frequent errors, limited expression | Conditional / pre-requisite admissions |
Question: "Why do you enjoy living in this city?"
Her beceri için ayrı bir band alırsın (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). Overall band = dört becerinin aritmetik ortalaması, ardından en yakın tam ya da yarım band’a yuvarlanır. Yuvarlama kuralı kendine özgüdür:
L 6.5 · R 6.5 · W 5.0 · S 7.0 → toplam 25.0 ÷ 4 = 6.25 → yuvarlanır → 6.5 overall.
L 7.5 · R 8.0 · W 6.5 · S 7.0 → toplam 29.0 ÷ 4 = 7.25 → 7.5 overall. (7.25 → .25 kuralı → 7.5)
L 6.0 · R 6.0 · W 6.0 · S 7.0 → 25.0 ÷ 4 = 6.125 → 6.0 overall.
|---|---|
| Writing | Task Achievement/Response · Coherence & Cohesion · Lexical Resource · Grammatical Range & Accuracy (dördünün ortalaması) |
| Speaking | Fluency & Coherence · Lexical Resource · Grammatical Range & Accuracy · Pronunciation |
| Listening / Reading | Doğru sayısı → resmî band dönüşüm tablosu (Academic ve GT’de tablolar farklı) |
You get a separate band for each skill (Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking). The overall band = the arithmetic mean of the four skills, then rounded to the nearest whole or half band. The rounding rule is idiosyncratic:
L 6.5 · R 6.5 · W 5.0 · S 7.0 → total 25.0 ÷ 4 = 6.25 → rounded → 6.5 overall.
L 7.5 · R 8.0 · W 6.5 · S 7.0 → total 29.0 ÷ 4 = 7.25 → 7.5 overall. (7.25 → the .25 rule → 7.5)
L 6.0 · R 6.0 · W 6.0 · S 7.0 → 25.0 ÷ 4 = 6.125 → 6.0 overall. Getting 7.0 in one skill did not raise the overall, because the fraction did not reach .25.
Important: Many institutions require not only an overall band but also a minimum band in each skill (a component/sub-score) — e.g. "overall 6.5, at least 6.0 in each section". So pushing one skill very high while neglecting another is risky; your weakest skill is usually the limiting factor. In Listening and Reading your raw score out of 40 is converted to a band with a conversion table; Writing and Speaking are scored against four criteria (below).
| Skill | Scoring criteria |
|---|---|
| Writing | Task Achievement/Response · Coherence & Cohesion · Lexical Resource · Grammatical Range & Accuracy (the average of the four) |
| Speaking | Fluency & Coherence · Lexical Resource · Grammatical Range & Accuracy · Pronunciation |
| Listening / Reading | Number correct → official band conversion table (the tables differ for Academic and GT) |
True/False/Not Given, başlık eşleştirme, boşluk doldurma gibi çok çeşitli soru tipi. Tarama (scanning) ve göz atma (skimming) becerileri belirleyici.
Academic: grafik/tablo/harita/süreç betimleme (≥150 kelime, ~20 dk). Veriyi seçip özetlemek, öne çıkan eğilimleri (trend) tarafsız dille yazmak gerekir — kişisel görüş yok.
Akademik deneme (≥250 kelime, ~40 dk).
Below is a summary of each skill and what to expect. For each one there is a separate detailed topic page on our site — you can study in depth via the links.
4 recordings, getting progressively harder: (1) an everyday dialogue, (2) a single-speaker briefing, (3) an academic discussion, (4) an academic lecture. 40 questions; the audio plays once. You will hear different accents (British, Australian, American).
In Academic, 3 long academic texts; 40 questions; 60 minutes. A wide variety of question types such as True/False/Not Given, matching headings and gap-fill. Scanning and skimming skills are decisive.
Academic: describing a graph/table/map/process (≥150 words, ~20 min). You need to select and summarise the data and write about the key trends in neutral language — no personal opinion.
An academic essay (≥250 words, ~40 min). Question types such as stating an opinion, discussing both sides, and problem-solution. In overall Writing, Task 2 carries more weight.
3 parts: (1) introductions/everyday questions, (2) a cue card — speaking about a topic for 1–2 min, (3) an abstract discussion. 11–14 min, with an examiner. Fluency and developing your ideas count more than the odd grammar error.
After reading the theory, practise in the real format: our IELTS practice hub has section-by-section exercises.
IELTS iki formatta verilir: bilgisayarda (computer-delivered) veya kağıt üzerinde (paper-based). İçerik, soru tipleri ve puanlama aynıdır; band skalası değişmez. Fark deneyimde ve lojistikte.
| Ölçüt | Computer-delivered | Paper-based |
|---|---|---|
| Sonuç süresi | 3–5 gün (çok hızlı) | ~13 gün |
| Sınav tarihleri | Çok sık, günde birden fazla oturum | Ayda birkaç sabit tarih |
| Yazma | Klavye — kelime sayacı ekranda, düzeltmek kolay | El yazısı — okunaklı olmalı, kelime sayımı manuel |
| Listening aktarımı | ~2 dk (ekrana yazdığın için) | 10 dk cevap kağıdına aktarım |
| Reading | Ekranda kaydırma, vurgulama araçları | Metne kalemle işaretleme serbest |
| Speaking | Yine yüz yüze (görüşme aynıdır) | Yüz yüze |
IELTS is delivered in two formats: computer-delivered or paper-based. The content, question types and scoring are the same; the band scale does not change. The difference is in the experience and logistics.
| Criterion | Computer-delivered | Paper-based |
|---|---|---|
| Result time | 3–5 days (very fast) | ~13 days |
| Exam dates | Very frequent, several sessions a day | A few fixed dates a month |
| Writing | Keyboard — word counter on screen, easy to edit | Handwriting — must be legible, word count is manual |
| Listening transfer | ~2 min (because you type on screen) | 10 min to transfer to the answer sheet |
| Reading | On-screen scrolling, highlighting tools | Free to mark the text with a pencil |
| Speaking | Still face to face (the interview is the same) | Face to face |
Hazırlığı hedef band’a olan mesafene göre planla. Önce bir deneme (mock) testi çöz ve mevcut seviyeni ölç; hedefinle aradaki fark çalışma süreni belirler. Kaba bir kılavuz:
| Mevcut → Hedef | Tahmini süre | Odak |
|---|---|---|
| B1 (≈5.0) → 6.0 | 8–12 hafta | Temel dilbilgisi + soru tipi tanıma + kelime |
| B2 (≈6.0) → 6.5–7.0 | 6–10 hafta | Writing/Speaking band ölçütleri, cohesion, akademik dil |
Plan your preparation according to the distance to your target band. First take a mock test and measure your current level; the gap between that and your target determines your study time. A rough guide:
| Current → Target | Estimated time | Focus |
|---|---|---|
| B1 (≈5.0) → 6.0 | 8–12 weeks | Basic grammar + question-type recognition + vocabulary |
| B2 (≈6.0) → 6.5–7.0 | 6–10 weeks | Writing/Speaking band criteria, cohesion, academic language |
| C1 (≈7.0) → 7.5–8.0 | 8–16 weeks | Nuance, idiom, accuracy, high-level argumentation |
The golden rule: Develop your test skill and your English skill together. Studying only "test tactics" stalls after a certain band; real progress comes from vocabulary, grammatical accuracy and regular production (writing/speaking). Pair every writing and speaking attempt with feedback.
False = metin bunun tersini söylüyor; Not Given = metin bu konuda bilgi vermiyor. En çok puan kaybettiren karışıklık budur.
Birebir çeviri sık sık yanlış collocation ve tuhaf sözdizimi üretir (make a decision ✓ / do a decision ✗).
Wrong. The examiner rewards accuracy and clarity. A complex structure you cannot control produces errors and lowers your band. Correct, fluent medium complexity beats faulty advanced language.
Memorised template sentences (especially in Speaking) lower your score; the examiner recognises the template and flags it as "not specific to the question". Learn patterns as flexible tools and adapt them to the question.
No. False = the text says the opposite of this; Not Given = the text gives no information about this. This is the confusion that loses the most points.
Word-for-word translation often produces the wrong collocation and odd syntax (make a decision ✓ / do a decision ✗). Learn English phrase by phrase (in collocations).
No — the Pronunciation criterion measures intelligibility, not imitation of a British/American accent. A candidate who speaks clearly with a Turkish accent can get an 8. Focus on: intonation, stress, fluency.
The Reading band conversion is stricter; for a high band target (7+ for immigration) serious preparation is essential. Also, choosing the wrong module for immigration invalidates the application.
Sonuçlar computer’da 3–5, paper’da ~13 günde gelir. Bir beceride beklenenden çok düşük band aldıysan Enquiry on Results (yeniden değerlendirme) talep edebilirsin; ücretlidir, band yükselirse iade edilir. Sonuç (TRF) 2 yıl geçerlidir — başvuru takvimini buna göre planla.
Results come in 3–5 days for computer and ~13 days for paper. If you got a much lower band than expected in one skill, you can request an Enquiry on Results (re-marking); there is a fee, refunded if your band rises. The result (TRF) is valid for 2 years — plan your application timeline accordingly.
Fark tam burada. En zor soruyu kovalarken kaybettiğin kolay puanlar, birçok adayın 6.0'da takılı kalmasının asıl sebebidir.
Most candidates get stuck for a long time in the 5.5–6.5 range and think it is a "lack of tactics". New books, new question banks, new "exam tricks" are tried, but the band just will not move. The reason is simple: getting stuck at the middle bands is not a strategy problem, it is a language problem. You do not gain a band by learning exam tactics.
You work on the three things that genuinely move your band, and all three are the language itself:
The shift in mindset here is critical: instead of trying to solve the hard questions, learn not to lose the easy ones. The difference is exactly here. The easy points you lose while chasing the hardest question are the real reason many candidates stay stuck at 6.0.
| Writing | Overview yaz (Task 1'de olmazsa olmaz). Comma splice yapma. Her fikre bir örnek ekle. |
| Speaking | Hiçbir cevap üç cümleden kısa olmasın. |
Each skill has a "winning zone". You collect your score by investing in the most productive region of that skill — not by trying to be perfect at all of them at once. The table below shows where your focus should be in each skill.
| Skill | Focus — what you are doing in this exam |
|---|---|
| Listening | Do not lose a single question in Sections 1 and 2; these two are the easiest points. In Sections 3 and 4, do not aim for all of them, take what is obtainable. |
| Reading | Finish Passages 1 and 2 completely. Give the remaining time to Passage 3 — the aim there is not full marks but reaching as many questions as you can. |
| Writing | Write an overview (essential in Task 1). Do not make comma splices. Add an example to every idea. |
| Speaking | No answer should be shorter than three sentences. |
I don't know demek sınavda sıfır puandır: değerlendiriciye puan verecek hiçbir malzeme bırakmazsın. Konuyu hiç bilmesen bile bir şey söyle — tahmin et, konuyu kendi hayatına çek, bir varsayım kur. Ama susma.
The most common band-lowering mistakes in Speaking are not technical but behavioural: giving short answers, going silent when you cannot find a word, and saying "I don't know". Three rules close these three mistakes directly.
One-word answers, long silences and "I don't know" — these three leave the examiner with no language to assess and directly hit your fluency score. The three rules below change exactly these three reflexes.
No answer can be shorter than three sentences. Every time, do these three: first give your answer, then state your reason, then add an example/detail.
Staying silent when you cannot find a word lowers your fluency score. Fill the silence with a set phrase, buy yourself thinking time, and carry on:
Saying I don't know is zero points in the exam: you leave the examiner nothing to score. Even if you know nothing about the topic, say something — guess, pull the topic into your own life, make an assumption. But do not go silent.
|---|---|---|
| 8.0 | Very Good | Çok az, sistemsiz hata; karmaşık dili doğal kullanır. |
| 7.5 | Good+ | İyi hakimiyet; nadir hata. Rekabetçi programlar, burslar. |
| 7.0 | Good | İyi hakimiyet; ara sıra yanlış kullanım. Yüksek lisans, bazı meslek onayları. |
| 6.5 | Competent+ | Genelde etkili; karmaşık dilde bazı hatalar. Birçok üniversite eşiği. |
| 6.0 | Competent | Genel etkili hakimiyet; hata ve yanlış anlama olur. Standart lisans/vize eşiği. |
| 5.5 | Modest+ | Kısmi hakimiyet; anlamı çoğunlukla taşır. Foundation/hazırlık kabulleri. |
| 5.0 | Modest | Temel iletişim; sık hata, sınırlı ifade. Şartlı kabuller. |
The band scale runs from 0 to 9 and moves in half steps (5.0, 5.5, 6.0…). In the table in Section 4 we saw the scale in detail with its CEFR equivalents; here is a short summary from a practical decision angle — "how much do I need?". Choosing the right target keeps you from losing months chasing a band higher than necessary, and from having your application invalidated by too low a target.
| Band | Label | In brief |
|---|---|---|
| 8.0 | Very Good | Very few, non-systematic errors; handles complex language naturally. |
| 7.5 | Good+ | Good command; rare errors. Competitive programmes, scholarships. |
| 7.0 | Good | Good command; occasional misuse. Master's, some professional registrations. |
| 6.5 | Competent+ | Generally effective; some errors with complex language. Many university thresholds. |
| 6.0 | Competent | Generally effective command; errors and misunderstandings occur. Standard undergraduate/visa threshold. |
| 5.5 | Modest+ | Partial command; usually conveys meaning. Foundation/preparatory admissions. |
| 5.0 | Modest | Basic communication; frequent errors, limited expression. Conditional admissions. |
Band kaybının büyük kısmı bilgi eksiğinden değil, süreyi kötü yönetmekten gelir. Her bölümün süre mantığı farklıdır; kuralları önceden bilmek, sınav günü panik yapmadan tempoyu tutmanı sağlar.
| Bölüm | Süre | Süre yönetimi kuralı |
|---|---|---|
| Writing | 60 dk | Task 1'e 20 dk, Task 2'ye 40 dk. Task 2 daha ağır puanlıdır — süre bölünmesini koru. |
| Reading | 60 dk / 40 soru | Ekstra aktarım süresi yok. Cevabı bulunca hemen cevap kağıdına/ekrana yaz; “sonra geçiririm” deme. |
| Listening | ~30 dk + 10 dk aktarım | Ses bir kez çalınır. Kağıt sınavda dinleme bitince cevapları aktarmak için 10 dk verilir (bilgisayarda ~2 dk). |
| Speaking | 11–14 dk | Üç bölümlük görüşme; kısa değil, gerekçelendirerek konuş (bkz. üç cümle kuralı). |
Adayların en sık düştüğü tuzak: Task 1'e (grafik betimleme) fazla zaman ayırıp Task 2'yi (deneme) yetiştirememek. Oysa Task 2, Writing puanının daha ağır bileşenidir. Task 1 için 20 dakikada durmayı bir alışkanlık haline getir; süre dolduğunda cümle yarım kalsa bile Task 2'ye geç. Yarım bir Task 2, yarım kalan bir Task 1'den çok daha pahalıya mal olur.
The bulk of lost band comes not from a lack of knowledge but from managing time badly. The timing logic of each section differs; knowing the rules in advance lets you keep the pace on exam day without panicking.
| Section | Time | Time-management rule |
|---|---|---|
| Writing | 60 min | 20 min for Task 1, 40 min for Task 2. Task 2 carries more weight — keep the split. |
| Reading | 60 min / 40 questions | No extra transfer time. As soon as you find an answer, write it on the answer sheet/screen; do not say "I'll transfer it later". |
| Listening | ~30 min + 10 min transfer | The audio plays once. In the paper test you get 10 min after the listening to transfer answers (~2 min on computer). |
| Speaking | 11–14 min | A three-part interview; speak with reasons, not briefly (see the three-sentence rule). |
The trap candidates fall into most often: spending too much time on Task 1 (graph description) and not finishing Task 2 (the essay). Yet Task 2 is the heavier component of the Writing score. Make stopping Task 1 at 20 minutes a habit; when the time is up, move to Task 2 even if a sentence is left half-finished. A half-finished Task 2 costs far more than a half-finished Task 1.
