Academic Task 1, sana bir görsel (grafik, tablo, harita ya da süreç şeması) verir ve senden onu en az 150 kelimeyle, yaklaşık 20 dakikada betimlemeni ister. Görüş bildirmezsin; veriyi seçer, özetler ve karşılaştırırsın. Bu rehber her görsel tipini ayrı ayrı, kalıp cümleler, veri dili ve band 5–9 karşılaştırmalarıyla adım adım anlatır.
Academic Task 1 gives you a visual (a graph, table, map or process diagram) and asks you to describe it in at least 150 words, in roughly 20 minutes. You do not give an opinion; you select, summarise and compare the data. This guide covers every visual type one by one, step by step, with template sentences, data language and band 5–9 comparisons.
The IELTS Writing test has two parts and lasts 60 minutes in total. The recommended time for Task 1 is 20 minutes, and 40 minutes for Task 2. Task 1 carries less weight than Task 2 (roughly one third), so spending more than 20 minutes on it is a strategic mistake. But low weight does not mean "unimportant": a weak Task 1 can pull your overall Writing band down by half a whole point.
In Academic Task 1 your job is to summarise visual information in your own words and report the most striking features. You are given a prompt and a visual. The classic instruction is:
The three key verbs in this instruction define your task: summarise (summarise — not every number, only what matters), select and report the main features and make comparisons. You are not asked for opinions, causes, predictions or recommendations.
In the General Training module, Task 1 is not a graph but a letter (complaint, request, invitation, apology, etc.). Tone (formal / semi-formal / informal) and letter structure (salutation, body, closing) are essential. This page focuses on the Academic visual task; the GT letter type is a separate topic and is covered on its own guide page. The data language and band logic below do not apply to GT — there the language criteria are politeness and clarity of purpose.
Task 1 dört ölçütte, her biri %25 ağırlıkla puanlanır. Nihai Task 1 bandı bu dördün ortalamasıdır. Ölçütlerin ne ölçtüğünü bilmek, hangi cümleye enerji harcayacağını belirler.
| Ölçüt | Ne ölçer? | Task 1'de somut karşılığı |
|---|---|---|
| Task Achievement (TA) | Görevi eksiksiz yaptın mı: 150+ kelime, doğru veri, net overview, uygun seçim | Bir overview cümlesi var mı? Sayılar doğru mu? Ana eğilimleri seçtin mi yoksa her rakamı listeledin mi? |
| Coherence & Cohesion (CC) | Mantıksal akış ve bağlantı: paragraflama, bağlaçlar, gönderim (this, such) | 4 paragraflık net yapı; while, whereas, in contrast, meanwhile gibi bağlaçların doğru kullanımı |
Task 1 is scored on four criteria, each weighted 25%. The final Task 1 band is the average of these four. Knowing what each criterion measures tells you which sentence to spend energy on.
| Criterion | What does it measure? | Its concrete equivalent in Task 1 |
|---|---|---|
| Task Achievement (TA) | Did you complete the task fully: 150+ words, accurate data, a clear overview, appropriate selection | Is there an overview sentence? Are the numbers correct? Did you select the main trends or list every figure? |
| Coherence & Cohesion (CC) | Logical flow and linking: paragraphing, connectors, reference (this, such) | A clear 4-paragraph structure; correct use of connectors like while, whereas, in contrast, meanwhile |
| Lexical Resource (LR) | Range and accuracy of vocabulary; paraphrasing power, collocation | Not repeating the same verb: rise / climb / surge / soar; collocations like a sharp increase |
| Grammatical Range & Accuracy (GRA) | Variety of sentence structures and grammatical accuracy | Comparison structures, relative clauses, the passive (in processes), correct tense (past/present/future), error-free sentences |
Half of TA depends on one thing: the overview. Without an overview, TA can almost never exceed 6 — meaning that however beautifully you write, your overall band is capped. So your first investment should not be fancy vocabulary but a clear overview.
Görsel tipi ne olursa olsun (süreç hariç, ona 5. bölümde değineceğiz) güvenli iskelet dört paragraftır. Bu yapı hem CC puanını korur hem de yazarken düşünmeyi kolaylaştırır.
Parafraz araç kutusu: shows → illustrates / depicts / presents / gives information about; the number of → the figure for / the quantity of; percentage → proportion / share; from 1918 to 2011 → over a 93-year period / between 1918 and 2011.
Overview başlatıcıları: Overall, / In general, / It is clear that / A striking feature is that… Overview'da kesin rakam vermezsin; onları detay paragraflarına saklarsın.
Whatever the visual type (except a process, which we cover in section 5), the safe skeleton is four paragraphs. This structure both protects your CC score and makes thinking easier while you write.
Paraphrase toolkit: shows → illustrates / depicts / presents / gives information about; the number of → the figure for / the quantity of; percentage → proportion / share; from 1918 to 2011 → over a 93-year period / between 1918 and 2011.
Overview openers: Overall, / In general, / It is clear that / A striking feature is that… In the overview you do not give exact figures; you save them for the detail paragraphs.
Aşağıda her görsel tipi için üç şey var: nasıl okunur, hangi dil, ve model overview + model detay cümlesi.
Nasıl okunur: Yatay eksen genellikle zamandır (yıl, ay). Dikey eksen ölçülen değerdir. Her çizgi bir seridir. Önce genel yönü (yükseliyor/düşüyor/dalgalı) yakala, sonra başlangıç–bitiş, en yüksek/düşük nokta ve çizgilerin kesiştiği yılları not al.
Hangi dil: Zaman geçmişse past simple (rose, fell). Değişim fiilleri + derece zarfları: rose sharply, fell steadily, fluctuated. Zaman ifadeleri: in 1990, over the next decade, by 2011.
Nasıl okunur: Zaman olmayabilir — çubuklar kategoriler (ülkeler, yaş grupları) arası karşılaştırmadır. En uzun ve en kısa çubuğu, gruplaşmaları (benzer yükseklikte olanlar) ve varsa dönem farkını (aynı kategoride 2 çubuk) yakala.
Hangi dil: Karşılaştırma ağır basar: the highest / the lowest / the second most, more than twice as many, roughly equal to, far fewer than. Zaman yoksa present simple kullanılabilir.
Nasıl okunur: Her dilim bir bütünün yüzdesidir; toplam %100'dür. En büyük ve en küçük dilimi bul. Sık formatta iki pasta verilir (ör. 2000 vs 2020) — o zaman görev, dilimlerin dönemler arası değişimini karşılaştırmaktır.
Hangi dil: Oran/parça dili: accounts for, makes up, represents, constitutes; the largest share, a quarter, just over half, a fifth. İki pasta varsa değişim fiilleri de girer.
Nasıl okunur: Tablo en çok ham veri içeren ve en kolay "her sayıyı listeleme" tuzağına düşülen tiptir. Her hücreyi yazmazsın. Satır/sütun bazında en yüksek, en düşük ve dikkat çekici örüntüyü seç. Toplam/ortalama satırı varsa oradan başla.
Hangi dil: Seçme ve karşılaştırma dili: the highest figure was recorded for…, in terms of…, when it comes to…, by comparison. Yaklaşıklık dili sık gerekir (yuvarlanmamış sayılar için).
Nasıl okunur: Genellikle bir yerin iki (bazen üç) dönemi verilir: 1990 vs bugün, ya da "şimdi" vs "planlanan". Görev, neyin eklendiğini, kaldırıldığını, taşındığını, dönüştürüldüğünü, genişletildiğini raporlamaktır. Yön (kuzey/güney/doğu/batı) ve konum ifadeleri esastır.
Hangi dil: Ağırlıkla edilgen (passive) ve konum dili: was built / was demolished / was replaced by / was converted into / was relocated to the north; in the north-eastern corner, adjacent to, on the site of the former…. Zaman: geçmiş→şimdi ise past + present; şimdi→gelecek ise will be / is going to be.
Nasıl okunur: Sayı yoktur; aşamalar (stages) vardır. İki tür: man-made (üretim: tuğla, kâğıt, çikolata) ve natural cycle (yaşam döngüsü, su döngüsü). Önce kaç aşama olduğunu ve başlangıç–bitiş noktasını say; döngüyse "sürekli tekrar eden" olduğunu belirt.
Hangi dil: Sıra bağlaçları + edilgen present simple: First, / Next, / After that, / Subsequently, / Finally; the beans are harvested, the mixture is heated, once it has cooled…. Overview burada "kaç aşama / doğal mı yapay mı / girdi-çıktı" der.
For each visual type below there are three things: how to read it, which language to use, and a model overview + model detail sentence.
How to read it: The horizontal axis is usually time (year, month). The vertical axis is the measured value. Each line is a series. First catch the general direction (rising/falling/fluctuating), then note the start–end, the highest/lowest point and the years where the lines cross.
Which language: If time is in the past, use the past simple (rose, fell). Change verbs + degree adverbs: rose sharply, fell steadily, fluctuated. Time expressions: in 1990, over the next decade, by 2011.
How to read it: There may not be time — the bars compare categories (countries, age groups). Catch the longest and shortest bar, the groupings (those of similar height) and, if present, the difference between periods (two bars in the same category).
Which language: Comparison dominates: the highest / the lowest / the second most, more than twice as many, roughly equal to, far fewer than. If there is no time, the present simple can be used.
How to read it: Each slice is a percentage of a whole; the total is 100%. Find the largest and smallest slice. A common format gives two pies (e.g. 2000 vs 2020) — in that case the task is to compare how the slices change between periods.
Which language: Proportion/part language: accounts for, makes up, represents, constitutes; the largest share, a quarter, just over half, a fifth. If there are two pies, change verbs come in as well.
How to read it: The table holds the most raw data and is the type where it is easiest to fall into the "listing every number" trap. You do not write out every cell. Select the highest, the lowest and the striking pattern by row/column. If there is a total/average row, start there.
Which language: Selecting and comparing language: the highest figure was recorded for…, in terms of…, when it comes to…, by comparison. Approximation language is often needed (for un-rounded numbers).
How to read it: Usually two (sometimes three) periods of a place are given: 1990 vs today, or "now" vs "planned". The task is to report what was added, removed, relocated, converted or expanded. Direction (north/south/east/west) and location expressions are essential.
Which language: Mostly the passive and location language: was built / was demolished / was replaced by / was converted into / was relocated to the north; in the north-eastern corner, adjacent to, on the site of the former…. Tense: if past→present, use past + present; if present→future, use will be / is going to be.
How to read it: There are no numbers; there are stages. Two kinds: man-made (manufacturing: brick, paper, chocolate) and natural cycle (life cycle, water cycle). First count how many stages there are and identify the start–end point; if it is a cycle, state that it "repeats continuously".
Which language: Sequencing connectors + the passive present simple: First, / Next, / After that, / Subsequently, / Finally; the beans are harvested, the mixture is heated, once it has cooled…. Here the overview states "how many stages / natural or man-made / input-output".
Task 1'in Lexical Resource puanı büyük ölçüde bu dört kutuya bağlıdır. Aynı fiili üç kez kullanmak yerine aşağıdaki kelimeleri döndürmek bandını yükseltir. Dikkat: her fiilin hem fiil hem isim formu vardır ve doğru kalıba oturmalıdır.
| Yön | Fiil (verb) | İsim (noun) | Örnek |
|---|---|---|---|
| Artış | rise, increase, grow, climb, go up | a rise, an increase, growth, a climb | Sales rose. / There was a rise in sales. |
| Hızlı/güçlü artış | surge, soar, rocket, jump, leap | a surge, a jump, a leap | Prices soared. / a sharp surge in prices |
| Düşüş | fall, decline, decrease, drop, dip | a fall, a decline, a decrease, a drop | Demand fell. / a steady decline in demand |
| Hızlı/sert düşüş | plummet, plunge, slump, collapse | a plunge, a slump, a collapse | Profits plummeted. / a dramatic plunge |
| Sabitlik | remain stable, stay constant, level off, plateau | a plateau, stability | Rates levelled off at 40%. |
| Dalgalanma | fluctuate, vary, oscillate | a fluctuation, variation | The figure fluctuated throughout the decade. |
| Zirve/dip | peak (at), bottom out, reach a low | a peak, a low point, a trough | Visitors peaked at 2 million in 2010. |
İki kalıp, ezberle: (a) [özne] + fiil + zarf → Sales rose sharply. (b) there was + a/an + sıfat + isim + in → There was a sharp rise in sales. Bu iki kalıbı değiştirerek kullanmak GRA çeşitliliği verir.
| Derece | Zarf (fiil ile) | Sıfat (isim ile) |
|---|---|---|
| Büyük / sert | sharply, dramatically, steeply, significantly | a sharp / dramatic / steep / significant … |
| Orta | steadily, gradually, moderately | a steady / gradual / moderate … |
| Küçük | slightly, marginally, gently | a slight / marginal / gentle … |
| Hız (sadece) | rapidly, quickly / slowly | a rapid / slow … |
Sık hata: zarf yerine sıfat, sıfat yerine zarf. ✗ It rose sharp. → ✓ It rose sharply. / ✗ a rise sharply → ✓ a sharp rise.
Grafikten okunan değer nadiren tam sayıdır; yaklaşıklık dili hem daha doğal hem daha güvenlidir.
The Lexical Resource score in Task 1 depends largely on these four boxes. Rotating the words below, instead of using the same verb three times, raises your band. Note: every verb has both a verb and a noun form, and each must sit in the correct pattern.
| Direction | Verb | Noun | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Increase | rise, increase, grow, climb, go up | a rise, an increase, growth, a climb | Sales rose. / There was a rise in sales. |
| Fast/strong increase | surge, soar, rocket, jump, leap | a surge, a jump, a leap | Prices soared. / a sharp surge in prices |
| Decrease | fall, decline, decrease, drop, dip | a fall, a decline, a decrease, a drop | Demand fell. / a steady decline in demand |
| Fast/sharp decrease | plummet, plunge, slump, collapse | a plunge, a slump, a collapse | Profits plummeted. / a dramatic plunge |
| Stability | remain stable, stay constant, level off, plateau | a plateau, stability | Rates levelled off at 40%. |
| Fluctuation | fluctuate, vary, oscillate | a fluctuation, variation | The figure fluctuated throughout the decade. |
| Peak/trough | peak (at), bottom out, reach a low | a peak, a low point, a trough | Visitors peaked at 2 million in 2010. |
Two patterns, memorise them: (a) [subject] + verb + adverb → Sales rose sharply. (b) there was + a/an + adjective + noun + in → There was a sharp rise in sales. Alternating these two patterns gives GRA variety.
| Degree | Adverb (with a verb) | Adjective (with a noun) |
|---|---|---|
| Big / sharp | sharply, dramatically, steeply, significantly | a sharp / dramatic / steep / significant … |
| Moderate | steadily, gradually, moderately | a steady / gradual / moderate … |
| Small | slightly, marginally, gently | a slight / marginal / gentle … |
| Speed (only) | rapidly, quickly / slowly | a rapid / slow … |
Common error: adjective instead of adverb, adverb instead of adjective. ✗ It rose sharp. → ✓ It rose sharply. / ✗ a rise sharply → ✓ a sharp rise.
The value read off a graph is rarely a whole number; approximation language is both more natural and safer.
Aşağıda tek bir gerçek gözlem — "ev sahipliği 1918'de %23'ten 2011'de %64'e çıktı" — üç farklı bant seviyesinde nasıl yazılır? Fark kelime, kalıp ve doğrulukta.
| Band | Örnek cümle | Neden bu band? |
|---|---|---|
| Band 5 | In 1918 the owned home is 23%. In 2011 it go up to 64%. It is more big now. | Yanlış zaman (is/go up), zayıf kelime (more big), kalıp tekrarı, yaklaşıklık yok. |
| Band 7 | The proportion of owned homes increased significantly, from 23% in 1918 to 64% in 2011. | Doğru zaman ve kalıp, uygun kelime (proportion, significantly), net rakamlar. Temiz ama sade. |
| Band 9 | Having stood at just under a quarter in 1918, the share of owner-occupied housing climbed steadily to peak at almost two-thirds by 2011 — a near-threefold rise. | İleri yapı (having + p.p.), doğal yaklaşıklık, collocation (owner-occupied), kat karşılaştırması, akıcı ve kusursuz. |
Below, a single real observation — "home ownership rose from 23% in 1918 to 64% in 2011" — is written at three different band levels. The difference lies in vocabulary, pattern and accuracy.
| Band | Example sentence | Why this band? |
|---|---|---|
| Band 5 | In 1918 the owned home is 23%. In 2011 it go up to 64%. It is more big now. | Wrong tense (is/go up), weak vocabulary (more big), repeated pattern, no approximation. |
| Band 7 | The proportion of owned homes increased significantly, from 23% in 1918 to 64% in 2011. | Correct tense and pattern, appropriate vocabulary (proportion, significantly), clear figures. Clean but plain. |
| Band 9 | Having stood at just under a quarter in 1918, the share of owner-occupied housing climbed steadily to peak at almost two-thirds by 2011 — a near-threefold rise. | Advanced structure (having + p.p.), natural approximation, collocation (owner-occupied), multiple comparison, fluent and flawless. |
Soru: The line graph shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. Aşağıdaki cevap yaklaşık 175 kelimedir ve dört paragraflık yapıyı izler.
Question: The line graph shows the percentage of households in owned and rented accommodation in England and Wales between 1918 and 2011. The answer below is around 175 words and follows the four-paragraph structure.
§7'de bir line graph için tam model cevap gördün. Aşağıda kalan altı görsel tipinin her biri için ayrı bir gerçek sınav sorusu + band 8+ model cevap var. Hepsi dört paragraflık yapıyı, seçilmiş veriyi ve tekrar etmeyen fiilleri izler. Kendi cevabını yazmadan önce soruyu oku, dene, sonra modeli karşılaştır.
Neden yüksek band: sayısız overview + sıralama; ülkeleri tek tek değil gruplayarak (iki zengin ekonomi vs Meksika) anlatıyor; accounted for, made up, absorbed, devoted ile fiil tekrarını kırıyor; nearly twice, more than double oran dili.
Neden yüksek band: iki pastayı ayrı ayrı değil değişim üzerinden okuyor; accounted for, supplied, made up, provided çeşitliliği; more than doubled, held steady, almost unchanged ile hem değişeni hem sabit kalanı işaretliyor.
| Haftalık ortalama saat | 13–15 yaş | 16–18 yaş | 19–22 yaş |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ders çalışma | 12.5 | 18.0 | 22.4 |
| Sosyal medya | 14.2 | 16.8 | 11.3 |
| Spor | 6.8 | 5.1 | 3.2 |
| Yarı zamanlı iş | 1.4 | 4.6 | 9.7 |
Neden yüksek band: 12 sayının tamamını değil, örüntüyü anlatıyor; almost doubling, more than halving oran dili; artan / azalan / zirve-yapan üç davranışı ayırıp gruplandırıyor.
Neden yüksek band: baştan sona edilgen present simple (are picked, are extracted, are roasted, are sealed); sıra bağlaçları (then, after which, before, subsequently, in the final stages); overview "linear / man-made / kaç aşama" der — süreç şemasının doğru overview'ı budur.
Neden yüksek band: ağırlıkla edilgen geçmiş (were cleared, was widened, was converted, was retained); yön ve konum dili (to the north of the river, in the east, beside it, at the town centre); değişeni ve değişmeyeni (kilise) birlikte raporluyor.
Neden yüksek band: iki farklı ölçeği (bar = kişi, çizgi = para) karıştırmadan ayrı birimlerle anlatıyor; ters yönlü iki eğilimi overview'da bağlıyor; collapsed, rebounded, climbed steadily ile hareket çeşitliliği.
In §7 you saw a full model answer for a line graph. Below there is a separate real exam question + band 8+ model answer for each of the remaining six visual types. All follow the four-paragraph structure, selected data and non-repeating verbs. Before writing your own answer, read the question, attempt it, then compare the model.
Why a high band: a number-free overview + ranking; it describes the countries not one by one but by grouping them (the two wealthy economies vs Mexico); it breaks verb repetition with accounted for, made up, absorbed, devoted; ratio language with nearly twice, more than double.
Why a high band: it reads the two pies not separately but through change; variety with accounted for, supplied, made up, provided; with more than doubled, held steady, almost unchanged it marks both what changed and what stayed constant.
| Weekly average hours | Age 13–15 | Age 16–18 | Age 19–22 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Studying | 12.5 | 18.0 | 22.4 |
| Social media | 14.2 | 16.8 | 11.3 |
| Sport | 6.8 | 5.1 | 3.2 |
| Part-time work | 1.4 | 4.6 | 9.7 |
Why a high band: it describes not all 12 numbers but the pattern; ratio language with almost doubling, more than halving; it separates and groups the three behaviours — rising / falling / peaking.
Why a high band: the passive present simple from start to finish (are picked, are extracted, are roasted, are sealed); sequencing connectors (then, after which, before, subsequently, in the final stages); the overview says "linear / man-made / how many stages" — that is the correct overview for a process diagram.
Why a high band: mostly the past passive (were cleared, was widened, was converted, was retained); direction and location language (to the north of the river, in the east, beside it, at the town centre); it reports both what changed and what did not (the church).
Why a high band: it describes the two different scales (bar = people, line = money) in separate units without mixing them; it links the two opposing trends in the overview; movement variety with collapsed, rebounded, climbed steadily.
Task 1 rapor ister, tartışma değil. ✗ "I think this is because the economy grew…" Sebep tahmini yasak. Sadece görselde görüneni yaz.
Özellikle tabloda. Her hücreyi çevirmek "mekanik listeleme"dir ve TA'yı düşürür. Seç: en yüksek, en düşük, en büyük değişim.
En pahalı hata. Overview yoksa TA 6'da tavanlanır. Ayrı paragraf yap ve Overall ile başlat.
Geçmiş veri → past simple. Tarihsiz/genel tablo → present. Harita/süreçte edilgen. ✗ "In 1990 sales increase".
Giriş cümlesini olduğu gibi almak kelime sayısına sayılmaz ve LR'ı düşürür. Mutlaka parafraz et.
Otomatik ceza. Ama 200+ da gereksiz risktir (hata + zaman). Hedef: 160–190 kelime.
✗ rose sharp / a increase sharply. Fiille zarf (sharply), isimle sıfat (a sharp rise).
Sürekli "X rose to Y" demek. Kalıpları döndür: there was a rise / saw an increase / witnessed growth.
Task 1 asks for a report, not an argument. ✗ "I think this is because the economy grew…" Guessing a cause is forbidden. Write only what is visible in the graph.
Especially in a table. Translating every cell is "mechanical listing" and lowers TA. Select: the highest, the lowest, the biggest change.
The most expensive mistake. Without an overview, TA is capped at 6. Make it a separate paragraph and start it with Overall.
Past data → past simple. A dateless/general table → present. Passive in maps/processes. ✗ "In 1990 sales increase".
Taking the introduction sentence as it is does not count towards the word count and lowers LR. Always paraphrase.
An automatic penalty. But 200+ is also an unnecessary risk (errors + time). Target: 160–190 words.
✗ rose sharp / a increase sharply. Adverb with a verb (sharply), adjective with a noun (a sharp rise).
Constantly saying "X rose to Y". Rotate patterns: there was a rise / saw an increase / witnessed growth.
| Dakika | Aşama | Ne yaparsın? |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | Analiz | Görseli oku: tip ne? zaman var mı? en yüksek/düşük/kesişim nerede? Overview'da ne diyeceğini kafanda belirle. |
| 3–5 | Giriş + Overview | Soruyu parafraz et, sonra Overall cümlesini yaz. En kritik 5 dakika. |
| 5–16 | İki detay paragrafı | Veriyi iki mantıklı gruba böl; her grubu seçilmiş sayı + karşılaştırma ile yaz. |
| 16–20 | Kontrol | Zaman tutarlı mı? overview var mı? 150+ kelime mi? zarf/sıfat, tekil-çoğul, yüzde işareti doğru mu? |
| Minute | Stage | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| 0–3 | Analysis | Read the visual: what type is it? is there time? where is the highest/lowest/crossover? Decide in your head what you will say in the overview. |
| 3–5 | Introduction + Overview | Paraphrase the question, then write the Overall sentence. The most critical 5 minutes. |
| 5–16 | Two detail paragraphs | Split the data into two logical groups; write each group with selected figures + comparison. |
| 16–20 | Check | Is the tense consistent? is there an overview? is it 150+ words? are adverbs/adjectives, singular-plural and the percent sign correct? |
