Task 2 is the essay section, common to both the Academic and General Training modules, that determines two-thirds of your total Writing score. You discuss a given view, solve a problem, or give a two-part answer to a question. This guide covers, in uncompromising depth, the four assessment criteria, every essay type with its own skeleton and thesis template, the real difference between bands 5–9, and a full model essay explained paragraph by paragraph.
IELTS Writing Task 2, sana verilen bir prompt (soru + yönerge) üzerine en az 250 kelimelik akademik bir deneme yazmanı ister. Task 1 ile birlikte toplam 60 dakikan vardır; Task 2 daha yüksek puanlı olduğu için 40 dakika ayırman önerilir. Task 2 puanı, toplam Writing bandının %66'sını (Task 1 %33) oluşturur — yani buradaki başarı, yazma notunu doğrudan belirler.
40 dakika (planlama + yazma + kontrol). Task 1'i 20 dakikada bitir, Task 2'ye 40 dakika bırak.
En az 250 kelime. Altında kalırsan ceza alırsın. İdeal aralık: 260-290 kelime (yeterli gelişim + zaman).
Resmî akademik deneme: giriş + 2 gövde paragrafı + sonuç. Madde işareti (bullet) veya not yok; tam cümlelerle yaz.
Yarı-resmî akademik. Kısaltma yok (don't → do not), günlük deyim yok, kişisel abartı yok.
Task 2 puanı dört kriterin ortalamasıdır; her biri eşit ağırlıktadır (%25). Yani mükemmel gramer tek başına 9 getirmez — soruyu tam yanıtlaman, fikirleri mantıklı bağlaman ve zengin kelime kullanman da gerekir. Bir kriterdeki zayıflık toplam bandı aşağı çeker.
IELTS Writing Task 2 asks you to write an academic essay of at least 250 words on a given prompt (question + instruction). Together with Task 1 you have 60 minutes in total; because Task 2 is worth more, it is recommended that you allow 40 minutes for it. The Task 2 score makes up 66% of the total Writing band (Task 1 is 33%) — so success here directly determines your writing grade.
40 minutes (planning + writing + checking). Finish Task 1 in 20 minutes and leave 40 for Task 2.
At least 250 words. Fall below and you are penalised. Ideal range: 260-290 words (enough development + time).
A formal academic essay: introduction + 2 body paragraphs + conclusion. No bullet points or notes; write in full sentences.
Semi-formal academic. No contractions (don't → do not), no everyday idioms, no personal exaggeration.
The Task 2 score is the average of four criteria, each weighted equally (25%). So perfect grammar alone does not earn a 9 — you also need to answer the question fully, connect ideas logically and use rich vocabulary. A weakness in one criterion pulls the total band down.
| 6 | Pozisyon net ama gelişim eşitsiz; bazı fikirler yetersiz desteklenmiş; sonuç zayıf. |
| 7 | Net pozisyon baştan sona korunur; ana fikirler genişletilir ve desteklenir; ara sıra fazla genelleme. |
| 9 | Soruya tam yanıt; iyi geliştirilmiş, alakalı, iyi desteklenmiş fikirler; pozisyon tümüyle netlik içinde. |
Fikirler mantıklı bir sırayla mı akıyor (coherence) ve cümleler/paragraflar doğru bağlaçlarla birbirine bağlanıyor mu (cohesion)? Paragraflama, referans (this, such, the latter), bağlaç kullanımı ve tekrar-önleme burada değerlendirilir.
| Band | Coherence & Cohesion'da ne görünür |
|---|---|
| 5 | Bağlaçlar var ama mekanik/hatalı (Moreover, But so...); paragraflama zayıf veya yok; referans belirsiz. |
| 6 | Bilgi mantıklı düzenlenmiş; bağlaçlar etkili ama bazen fazla/az kullanılıyor; her paragrafın merkez fikri var. |
| 7 | Fikirler mantıkla ilerler; bağlaçlar çeşitli ve doğru; referans ve tekrar-önleme akıcı; net paragraflama. |
| 9 | Bağdaşıklık göze çarpmaz — okuma tamamen akıcı; paragraflama kusursuz; bağlaçlar hiç dikkat çekmeden çalışır. |
Kelime dağarcığının genişliği, doğruluğu ve doğal kullanımı. Collocation (doğru eş-dizim), az yaygın kelimeler, parafraz becerisi ve yazım/kelime-seçim hataları burada ölçülür. Ezberlenmiş "süslü kelime" değil, yerinde kelime kazandırır.
| Band | Lexical Resource'ta ne görünür |
|---|---|
| 5 | Sınırlı kelime; konuya yeter ama tekrarlı; belirgin yazım/seçim hataları iletişimi zorlaştırabilir. |
| 6 | Yeterli kelime; bazı az yaygın kelime denenir ama hatalarla; collocation zaman zaman yanlış. |
| 7 | Esnek kelime kullanımı; az yaygın kelime ve collocation farkındalığı; ara sıra kelime-seçim/yazım hatası. |
| 9 | Doğal ve sofistike kelime; nadir kelimeler tam yerinde; kusursuz collocation; hata neredeyse yok. |
Kullandığın yapıların çeşitliliği (basit + karmaşık cümle karışımı) ve doğruluğu. Yalnızca hatasız basit cümleler yüksek band getirmez — koşul cümleleri, ilgi cümleleri, edilgen çatı gibi yapıları doğru kullanman gerekir.
| Band | Grammar'da ne görünür |
|---|---|
| 5 | Sınırlı yapı; karmaşık cümle denemesi çok hatalı; hatalar sık ve okuru zorlar. |
| 6 | Basit ve karmaşık yapı karışımı; hatalar var ama anlamı nadiren bozar. |
| 7 | Çeşitli karmaşık yapılar; cümlelerin çoğu hatasız; birkaç hata kalır ama küçük. |
| 9 | Tam esneklik ve doğruluk; nadir "kayma" dışında hatasız; yapı çeşitliliği doğal. |
Pratik sonuç: band 7 hedefliyorsan her kriterde en az 7 tutturmalısın. Tek bir 6 (ör. gramer), diğerleri 7 olsa bile ortalamayı 6.5'e çeker. Bu yüzden en zayıf kriterine odaklan.
The IELTS examiner scores your essay on four separate criteria. Below you see what each criterion measures and what concretely changes between band 5 and 9.
Did you answer exactly what the question asks? Is there a clear position (thesis), did you address all parts, did you develop your ideas with examples and explanation? The most frequent band loss comes from here: misreading the question or skipping part of it.
| Band | What Task Response looks like |
|---|---|
| 5 | Position unclear/inconsistent; main ideas present but undeveloped or drifting off topic; the question is only partly answered. |
| 6 | Position clear but development uneven; some ideas insufficiently supported; a weak conclusion. |
| 7 | A clear position is maintained throughout; main ideas are extended and supported; occasional over-generalisation. |
| 9 | The question is fully answered; well-developed, relevant, well-supported ideas; the position is entirely clear. |
Do the ideas flow in a logical order (coherence) and are sentences/paragraphs linked with the right connectors (cohesion)? Paragraphing, reference (this, such, the latter), use of connectors and avoiding repetition are assessed here.
| Band | What Coherence & Cohesion looks like |
|---|---|
| 5 | Connectors present but mechanical/incorrect (Moreover, But so...); weak or no paragraphing; unclear reference. |
| 6 | Information logically organised; connectors effective but sometimes over/under-used; each paragraph has a central idea. |
| 7 | Ideas progress logically; connectors are varied and correct; reference and avoidance of repetition are fluent; clear paragraphing. |
| 9 | Cohesion is unobtrusive — reading is entirely fluent; paragraphing is flawless; connectors work without ever drawing attention. |
The range, accuracy and natural use of your vocabulary. Collocation (correct word partnerships), less common words, paraphrasing skill and spelling/word-choice errors are measured here. It is not the memorised "fancy word" but the apt word that earns marks.
| Band | What Lexical Resource looks like |
|---|---|
| 5 | Limited vocabulary; adequate for the topic but repetitive; noticeable spelling/choice errors can hinder communication. |
| 6 | Adequate vocabulary; some less common words attempted but with errors; collocation occasionally wrong. |
| 7 | Flexible use of vocabulary; awareness of less common words and collocation; occasional word-choice/spelling error. |
| 9 | Natural and sophisticated vocabulary; rare words perfectly placed; flawless collocation; virtually no errors. |
The variety (a mix of simple + complex sentences) and accuracy of the structures you use. Error-free simple sentences alone do not earn a high band — you must use structures like conditionals, relative clauses and the passive correctly.
| Band | What Grammar looks like |
|---|---|
| 5 | Limited structures; attempts at complex sentences are very error-prone; errors are frequent and strain the reader. |
| 6 | A mix of simple and complex structures; errors present but they rarely obscure meaning. |
| 7 | A variety of complex structures; most sentences error-free; a few errors remain but are minor. |
| 9 | Full flexibility and accuracy; error-free apart from rare "slips"; variety of structure is natural. |
The practical upshot: if you are aiming for band 7 you must hit at least 7 in every criterion. A single 6 (e.g. grammar), even with the others at 7, pulls the average down to 6.5. So focus on your weakest criterion.
Task 2'de beş temel soru tipi karşına çıkar. Her tipin kendine özgü bir yapısı ve tez (thesis) kalıbı vardır. Yapılan en büyük hata, her soruyu aynı şablonla yazmaktır. Önce soruyu doğru sınıflandır, sonra o tipe uygun iskeleti kur.
Tanıma: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" veya "Do you think... ?". Sana kendi görüşün sorulur ve baştan sona net bir pozisyon beklenir.
İskelet:
Tez kalıbı:
Tanıma: "Discuss both these views and give your own opinion." İki görüşü de adil biçimde tartışman ve kendi görüşünü belirtmen istenir. En sık atlanan parça: "give your own opinion".
İskelet:
Tez kalıbı:
Tanıma: "What are the advantages and disadvantages?" veya "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?" İkinci varyantta mutlaka bir tartı (hangisi ağır basıyor) yapman gerekir.
İskelet ("outweigh" varyantı):
Tez kalıbı:
Tanıma: "What problems does this cause and what solutions can you suggest?" veya "What are the causes and what measures can be taken?" Her paragrafta bir problem/nedeni bir de ona bağlı çözümü ele almak en güçlü yapıdır.
İskelet:
Tez kalıbı:
Tanıma: İki ayrı doğrudan soru içerir; genelde "agree/disagree" veya "discuss" ifadesi yoktur. İkisini de yanıtlamazsan Task Response düşer.
İskelet:
Tez kalıbı:
| Tip | Anahtar yönerge | Kritik gereklilik |
|---|---|---|
| Opinion | agree or disagree / do you think | Baştan sona tek net pozisyon |
| Discussion | discuss both views + your opinion | İki görüş + KENDİ görüşün (üçü de) |
| Adv/Disadv | advantages and disadvantages / outweigh | "outweigh" varsa net tartı |
| Problem/Solution | problems/causes + solutions/measures | Neden ile çözümün bağlantılı olması |
| Two-part | İki ayrı doğrudan soru | Her iki soruyu da yanıtlama |
In Task 2 you face five basic question types. Each type has its own structure and thesis template. The biggest mistake made is writing every question with the same template. First classify the question correctly, then build the skeleton that fits that type.
How to recognise it: "To what extent do you agree or disagree?" or "Do you think... ?". You are asked for your own opinion and a clear position is expected throughout.
Skeleton:
Thesis template:
How to recognise it: "Discuss both these views and give your own opinion." You are asked to discuss both views fairly and state your own opinion. The most commonly skipped part: "give your own opinion".
Skeleton:
Thesis template:
How to recognise it: "What are the advantages and disadvantages?" or "Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?" In the second variant you must make a judgement (which one outweighs).
Skeleton ("outweigh" variant):
Thesis template:
How to recognise it: "What problems does this cause and what solutions can you suggest?" or "What are the causes and what measures can be taken?" Addressing one problem/cause and a linked solution in each paragraph is the strongest structure.
Skeleton:
Thesis template:
How to recognise it: It contains two separate direct questions; usually there is no "agree/disagree" or "discuss". If you don't answer both, Task Response drops.
Skeleton:
Thesis template:
| Type | Key instruction | Critical requirement |
|---|---|---|
| Opinion | agree or disagree / do you think | A single clear position throughout |
| Discussion | discuss both views + your opinion | Two views + YOUR own opinion (all three) |
| Adv/Disadv | advantages and disadvantages / outweigh | A clear verdict if "outweigh" is present |
| Problem/Solution | problems/causes + solutions/measures | The solution must be linked to the cause |
| Two-part | Two separate direct questions | Answering both questions |
Yüksek bandlı bir denemenin iskeleti nettir: giriş → 2 gövde paragrafı → sonuç. Her paragrafın belirli bir işi vardır; bu işi yerine getirmediğinde okur (değerlendirici) kaybolur.
İki cümle yeter. (1) Sorunun konusunu kendi kelimelerinle yeniden ifade et — sorudaki kelimeleri kopyalama. (2) Net tezini/pozisyonunu ver. Giriş kısa olmalı; asıl puan gövdededir.
Her gövde paragrafı tek bir ana fikir içerir. Yapı: PEEL — Point (topic sentence), Explain (neden/nasıl), Example (somut örnek), Link (teze geri bağla). Örnekler uydurma-somut olabilir; gerçek istatistik gerekmez, mantıklı ve konuya uygun olması yeter.
Yeni fikir ekleme. Tezini farklı kelimelerle tekrarla ve gövdedeki ana noktaları birkaç kelimeyle topla. Bir "so what" (sonuç/öneri) cümlesi kapanışı güçlendirir.
The skeleton of a high-band essay is clear: introduction → 2 body paragraphs → conclusion. Each paragraph has a specific job; when it fails to do that job, the reader (examiner) gets lost.
Two sentences are enough. (1) Restate the topic of the question in your own words — do not copy the words in the question. (2) Give your clear thesis/position. The introduction should be short; the real marks are in the body.
Each body paragraph contains a single main idea. Structure: PEEL — Point (topic sentence), Explain (why/how), Example (a concrete example), Link (back to the thesis). Examples can be invented-but-concrete; you don't need real statistics, only something logical and relevant.
Do not add a new idea. Repeat your thesis in different words and gather the main points of the body in a few words. A "so what" (conclusion/recommendation) sentence strengthens the closing.
Cohesion, cümleleri "yapıştıran" mekanizmadır. Ama dikkat çeken cohesion (her cümle başına Firstly, Moreover, In addition) band düşürür. Amaç: bağlantı fark edilmeden akmalı.
| İşlev | Doğal seçenekler |
|---|---|
| Ekleme | Furthermore, In addition, What is more, Beyond this |
| Zıtlık | However, Nevertheless, On the other hand, That said |
| Neden/sonuç | Consequently, As a result, This is largely because, Hence |
| Örnek | For instance, To illustrate, A case in point is |
| Sonuç/özet | In conclusion, To sum up, On balance |
Yapma: her paragrafa Firstly / Secondly / Lastly dizmek; Moreover, But... gibi hatalı eşleştirme; virgül hatalı bağlaç (However it is... — nokta ya da noktalı virgül gerek).
Aynı ismi tekrar tekrar yazmak yerine this, these, such, the former/the latter, it, they ve eş anlamlılar kullan. Bu hem cohesion hem lexical resource puanını yükseltir.
Cohesion is the mechanism that "glues" sentences together. But conspicuous cohesion (a Firstly, Moreover, In addition at the start of every sentence) lowers your band. The aim: linking should flow unnoticed.
| Function | Natural options |
|---|---|
| Addition | Furthermore, In addition, What is more, Beyond this |
| Contrast | However, Nevertheless, On the other hand, That said |
| Cause/effect | Consequently, As a result, This is largely because, Hence |
| Example | For instance, To illustrate, A case in point is |
| Conclusion/summary | In conclusion, To sum up, On balance |
Don't: line up Firstly / Secondly / Lastly in every paragraph; mismatch connectors like Moreover, But...; comma-splice a connector (However it is... — a full stop or semicolon is needed).
Instead of writing the same noun over and over, use this, these, such, the former/the latter, it, they and synonyms. This raises both your cohesion and lexical resource score.
Tez (thesis), denemenin omurgasıdır: okur girişte ne savunacağını bilmeli. Zayıf tez belirsizdir ("This essay will discuss both sides."); güçlü tez pozisyon alır.
| Zayıf tez | Güçlü tez |
|---|---|
| There are advantages and disadvantages to this. | Although online learning widens access, its lack of interaction makes it inferior for younger students. |
| I will discuss both views. | While both approaches have merit, I am firmly convinced that prevention is more cost-effective than treatment. |
Band 5-6 denemelerde fikirler listelenir ama açılmaz. Band 7+ için her fikri şu üç adımla derinleştir:
The thesis is the backbone of the essay: the reader must know from the introduction what you will defend. A weak thesis is vague ("This essay will discuss both sides."); a strong thesis takes a position.
| Weak thesis | Strong thesis |
|---|---|
| There are advantages and disadvantages to this. | Although online learning widens access, its lack of interaction makes it inferior for younger students. |
| I will discuss both views. | While both approaches have merit, I am firmly convinced that prevention is more cost-effective than treatment. |
In band 5-6 essays ideas are listed but not opened up. For band 7+ deepen every idea with these three steps:
Yüksek band, "büyük kelimeler" değil akademik olgunluk ister. Üç araç fark yaratır:
Kesin/abartılı iddialardan kaçın; tend to, may, is likely to, in many cases, arguably, to some extent gibi ifadelerle iddiayı ölçülü tut. Bu, akademik güvenilirlik katar.
Daha derin örnekler ve kalıplar için: Akademik Hedging.
Akademik yazı fiil yerine isim öbekleriyle yoğunlaşır. Bu, cümleyi daha resmî ve bilgi-yoğun yapar.
Kelimeler doğru "ortağıyla" gelir. make research yanlış, conduct research doğru. Doğru collocation lexical resource'un kalbidir.
| Yanlış | Doğru collocation |
|---|---|
| make a big damage | cause serious damage |
| do a decision | make / reach a decision |
| strong rain | heavy rain |
| gain knowledge about | acquire knowledge of |
A high band requires not "big words" but academic maturity. Three tools make the difference:
Avoid absolute/exaggerated claims; keep claims measured with expressions like tend to, may, is likely to, in many cases, arguably, to some extent. This adds academic credibility.
For deeper examples and templates: Academic Hedging.
Academic writing packs information into noun phrases rather than verbs. This makes a sentence more formal and information-dense.
Words come with the right "partner". make research is wrong, conduct research is correct. Correct collocation is the heart of lexical resource.
| Wrong | Correct collocation |
|---|---|
| make a big damage | cause serious damage |
| do a decision | make / reach a decision |
| strong rain | heavy rain |
| gain knowledge about | acquire knowledge of |
Aşağıda aynı temel fikir ("teknoloji eğitimi geliştirir") üç farklı band düzeyinde ifade ediliyor. Farkın kelimede değil; gelişim, doğruluk, bağdaşıklık ve akademik olgunlukta olduğuna dikkat et.
| Band | Aynı fikrin yazımı |
|---|---|
| 5 | Technology is good for education. Students can use it. It helps them learn many things and it is very useful for everyone. (Belirsiz, tekrarlı, gelişmemiş; genel geçer.) |
| 7 | Technology has significantly improved education because it gives students instant access to information. For example, learners in remote areas can now attend online courses that were previously unavailable to them. (Net iddia + neden + somut örnek; doğru bağlaç.) |
| 9 | Digital technology has transformed education by dismantling the geographical barriers that once restricted access to knowledge. A student in a rural village, for instance, can now enrol in a world-class online programme — an opportunity that would have been unthinkable a generation ago. This democratisation of learning arguably represents one of the most profound educational shifts of the century. (Sofistike kelime yerinde, nominalizasyon, hedging "arguably", derin gelişim ve kusursuz akış.) |
Below, the same basic idea ("technology improves education") is expressed at three different band levels. Notice that the difference is not in the words but in development, accuracy, cohesion and academic maturity.
| Band | Writing the same idea |
|---|---|
| 5 | Technology is good for education. Students can use it. It helps them learn many things and it is very useful for everyone. (Vague, repetitive, undeveloped; generic.) |
| 7 | Technology has significantly improved education because it gives students instant access to information. For example, learners in remote areas can now attend online courses that were previously unavailable to them. (Clear claim + reason + concrete example; correct connector.) |
(Sophisticated vocabulary in place, nominalisation, hedging with "arguably", deep development and flawless flow.) |
Soru (Opinion tipi): Some people believe that governments should invest more in public transport, while others think building more roads is a better solution to traffic problems. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
(Not: Bu aslında bir Discussion sorusu; net kendi görüş şart. Aşağıdaki model bu gereksinimi karşılar.)
Neden çalışıyor: Soru kopyalanmadan parafraz edildi ("opinion is divided"), iki görüş de tanındı, altı çizili cümlede net kişisel pozisyon var — Task Response'un çekirdeği.
Neden çalışıyor: Karşı görüş güçlü sunuldu (topic sentence + açıklama + örnek), ardından altı çizili cümlede zarifçe eleştirildi — bu, gövdeyi kendi teze bağlar.
Neden çalışıyor: İkinci görüş gelişti ve altı çizili cümle kişisel görüşü gerekçesiyle netleştirdi ("since it delivers... benefits"). Discussion sorusunun üçüncü şartı (own opinion) burada karşılandı.
Neden çalışıyor: Yeni fikir yok; iki görüş özetlendi ve tez farklı kelimelerle tekrarlandı. "short-lived", "underlying causes" gibi yerinde kelime lexical resource'u destekler.
Toplam ~275 kelime — ideal aralıkta. Dört kriter de karşılanıyor: net pozisyon (TR), akıcı bağdaşıklık (CC), zengin ve doğru kelime (LR), çeşitli karmaşık yapı (GRA).
Question (Opinion type): Some people believe that governments should invest more in public transport, while others think building more roads is a better solution to traffic problems. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
(Note: This is actually a Discussion question; a clear own opinion is essential. The model below meets that requirement.)
Why it works: The question is paraphrased without copying ("opinion is divided"), both views are acknowledged, and the underlined sentence gives a clear personal position — the core of Task Response.
Why it works: The opposing view is presented strongly (topic sentence + explanation + example), then gracefully critiqued in the underlined sentence — this ties the body back to your thesis.
Why it works: The second view is developed and the underlined sentence makes the personal opinion clear with its justification ("since it delivers... benefits"). The third requirement of a Discussion question (own opinion) is met here.
Why it works: No new idea; both views are summarised and the thesis is repeated in different words. Apt words like "short-lived", "underlying causes" support lexical resource.
Total ~275 words — in the ideal range. All four criteria are met: clear position (TR), fluent cohesion (CC), rich and accurate vocabulary (LR), varied complex structure (GRA).
Neden yüksek band: giriş net pozisyon alıyor (yanına, yerine değil) ve sonuna kadar korunuyor; her gövde iddia + gerekçe + somut örnek (borç / tarih); at the expense of, habits of mind, substitute one for the other gibi doğal kelime.
Fikir bankası
En güçlü pozisyon: avantajlar ağır basar, çünkü dezavantajlar yönetilebilir (hibrit model, net mesai saati), avantajlar ise yapısaldır.
Neden yüksek band: "outweigh" sorusunda net tartı kuruluyor; dezavantajları inkâr etmeden çürütüyor (real but largely solvable); on balance, prevail, structural ile değerlendirme dili.
Fikir bankası
En güçlü hamle: pozisyon değil eşleşme. Her çözüm bir sebebe doğrudan cevap versin — en çok puan getiren yapı budur.
Neden yüksek band: çözümler sebeplerle birebir eşleşiyor (Each cause suggests its own remedy); somut örnek (Londra); at its root, symptoms vs underlying causes ile derinlik.
Fikir bankası
Kritik kural: two-part'ta her iki soru da yanıtlanmalı. Bir gövde "neden", bir gövde "etki" — en temiz yapı budur.
Neden yüksek band: iki soru ayrı gövdelerde tam yanıtlanıyor; giriş "first... then..." ile yol haritası veriyor; obliging, compounds, take a real toll gibi ileri kelime + kişisel örnek.
In §9 we solved a Discussion question paragraph by paragraph. Below, for each of the remaining four types, there is: a real exam question, an idea bank that stops you from freezing at a blank page, and a full band 8+ model essay. Do not copy the idea bank — pick an idea, write it in your own sentence, add your own example.
Idea bank
The strongest position: practical skills should be added, but alongside academic subjects, not instead of them (alongside, not instead of). This lets you use both sides.
Why a high band: the introduction takes a clear position (alongside, not instead of) and maintains it to the end; each body has a claim + justification + concrete example (debt / history); natural vocabulary such as at the expense of, habits of mind, substitute one for the other.
Idea bank
The strongest position: the advantages outweigh, because the disadvantages are manageable (hybrid model, clear working hours), whereas the advantages are structural.
Why a high band: in an "outweigh" question a clear verdict is established; it rebuts the disadvantages without denying them (real but largely solvable); evaluative language with on balance, prevail, structural.
Idea bank
The strongest move: not a position but a match. Let each solution answer a cause directly — this is the structure that earns the most marks.
Why a high band: the solutions match the causes one-to-one (Each cause suggests its own remedy); a concrete example (London); depth with at its root, symptoms vs underlying causes.
Idea bank
Critical rule: in a two-part question both questions must be answered. One body for "why", one body for "effect" — this is the cleanest structure.
Why a high band: the two questions are fully answered in separate bodies; the introduction gives a roadmap with "first... then..."; advanced vocabulary like obliging, compounds, take a real toll + a personal example.
Discussion sorusunda "own opinion"ı atlamak, two-part'ta ikinci soruyu unutmak, "outweigh"de net tartı yapmamak. Yazmaya başlamadan soruyu tipine göre etiketle.
"In this modern era, it is a hotly debated topic that..." gibi kalıplar Task Response'u düşürür. Değerlendirici bunları tanır ve içerik saymaz. Soruya özgü, doğal giriş yaz.
Genel bir örneği zorla iliştirmek. Örnek, o paragrafın ana fikrini doğrudan desteklemeli. Alakasız örnek gelişim saymaz.
250 altı ceza; 320+ ise zaman kaybı ve hata riski. Hedef 260-290. Uzunluğu kelime doldurarak değil, fikir geliştirerek sağla.
Her cümleye Moreover / Furthermore / In addition koymak yapaylaşır. Bağlacı yalnızca gerçek bir mantık geçişi olduğunda kullan.
"make a decision" yerine "do a decision", "heavy rain" yerine "strong rain" gibi collocation hataları. İngilizce eş-dizimi ezberle, kelimeyi tek tek çevirme.
don't, can't, kids, a lot of, stuff akademik denemede uygun değil. do not, children, many, aspects kullan.
Tek uzun blok Coherence puanını düşürür. Net dört paragraf: giriş, gövde 1, gövde 2, sonuç. Paragraflar arası boşluk bırak.
Skipping "own opinion" in a Discussion question, forgetting the second question in a two-part, not making a clear verdict in an "outweigh". Before you start writing, label the question by its type.
Templates like "In this modern era, it is a hotly debated topic that..." lower Task Response. The examiner recognises them and does not count them as content. Write a natural introduction specific to the question.
Forcing a generic example in. The example must directly support the main idea of that paragraph. An irrelevant example does not count as development.
Under 250 is a penalty; 320+ is wasted time and risk of error. Target 260-290. Achieve length by developing ideas, not padding with words.
Putting Moreover / Furthermore / In addition at the start of every sentence becomes artificial. Use a connector only when there is a genuine logical transition.
Collocation errors like "do a decision" instead of "make a decision", "strong rain" instead of "heavy rain". Memorise the English partnership, don't translate word by word.
don't, can't, kids, a lot of, stuff are not appropriate in an academic essay. Use do not, children, many, aspects.
A single long block lowers the Coherence score. Clear four paragraphs: introduction, body 1, body 2, conclusion. Leave a gap between paragraphs.
| Aşama | Süre | Ne yaparsın |
|---|---|---|
| Analiz + planlama | ~5 dk | Soru tipini belirle, pozisyon al, 2 gövde fikri + örnek not et, tezi zihinde kur. |
| Giriş | ~3 dk | Parafraz + net tez (2-3 cümle). |
| Gövde 1 | ~10 dk | Topic sentence + açıklama + örnek + bağ. |
| Gövde 2 | ~10 dk | Topic sentence + açıklama + örnek + (kendi görüş). |
| Sonuç | ~5 dk | Pozisyonu yeniden ifade + özet. |
| Kontrol | ~5 dk | Kelime sayısı, dilbilgisi (özne-yüklem, tekil/çoğul, artikel), yazım, bağlaç. |
5 dakikalık planlama "kayıp zaman" değil, en yüksek getirili yatırımdır. Plansız başlayan öğrenci ikinci gövdede tıkanır, tekrar eder ve konu dışına çıkar. Kısa bir iskelet (tez + 2 topic sentence + 2 örnek anahtarı) yeterli.
| Stage | Time | What you do |
|---|---|---|
| Analysis + planning | ~5 min | Identify the question type, take a position, note 2 body ideas + examples, form the thesis in your mind. |
| Introduction | ~3 min | Paraphrase + clear thesis (2-3 sentences). |
| Body 1 | ~10 min | Topic sentence + explanation + example + link. |
| Body 2 | ~10 min | Topic sentence + explanation + example + (own opinion). |
| Conclusion | ~5 min | Restate the position + summary. |
| Checking | ~5 min | Word count, grammar (subject-verb, singular/plural, articles), spelling, connectors. |
5 minutes of planning is not "lost time" but the highest-return investment. A student who starts without a plan gets stuck in the second body, repeats themselves and drifts off topic. A short skeleton (thesis + 2 topic sentences + 2 example keys) is enough.
