Bağlaçlar (linking words), iki fikri birbirine bağlayan köprülerdir. Onlar olmadan cümleler kısa, kopuk ve çocuksu kalır: I was tired. I went home. I slept. Bağlaçla akıcı olur: I was tired, so I went home and slept.
Yanlış bağlaç, cümlenin mantığını bozar: It was raining, so we stayed dry (yağmur yağıyordu, bu yüzden kuru kaldık) mantıksızdır; doğrusu but/however ile zıtlıktır.
Neden Türk öğrenci için zor?
Anlam kolaydır — although = "rağmen/-e rağmen" olduğunu herkes çabuk öğrenir. Zorluk dilbilgisinde ve noktalamada saklıdır. Türkçede "rağmen" hem isimle ("yağmura rağmen") hem cümleyle ("yağmur yağmasına rağmen") aynı kelimeyle kullanılır. İngilizcede ise bu ikiye ayrılır: despite the rain (isim) ama although it rained (cümle). Türkçe düşünen öğrenci ikisini karıştırır: despite it rained (yanlış!) der.
- Bazı bağlaçlar arkasına tam cümle (özne + fiil) alır: because, although, while, so that.
- Bazıları arkasına isim / -ing alır: because of, despite, in spite of.
- Bazıları iki bağımsız cümleyi noktalı virgül + virgül ile bağlar: ; however, / ; therefore,.
- Bazıları cümlenin başında durur (However, ...), bazıları ortasında (..., but ...).
Linking words (bağlaçlar) are bridges that connect two ideas. Without them, sentences stay short, disjointed and childish: I was tired. I went home. I slept. With a linker they become fluent: I was tired, so I went home and slept. In Turkish these bridges are words like ve, ama, çünkü, bu yüzden, rağmen, ancak, oysa; English has exact equivalents for them.
These bridges show the relationship of meaning: are you adding (and), building a contrast (but), giving a cause (because), or drawing a result (so)? Choosing the right linker tells the reader the direction of your thought. The wrong linker breaks the logic of the sentence: It was raining, so we stayed dry ('it was raining, so we stayed dry') is illogical; the correct version is a contrast with but/however.
Why is it difficult for Turkish students?
The meaning is easy — everyone quickly learns that although = 'rağmen/-e rağmen'. The difficulty is hidden in the grammar and punctuation. In Turkish 'rağmen' is used with the same word both with a noun ('yağmura rağmen') and with a clause ('yağmur yağmasına rağmen'). In English this splits in two: despite the rain (noun) but although it rained (clause). A student thinking in Turkish confuses the two: they say despite it rained (wrong!).
- Some linkers take a full clause (subject + verb) after them: because, although, while, so that.
- Some take a noun / -ing after them: because of, despite, in spite of.
- Some connect two independent clauses with a semicolon + comma: ; however, / ; therefore,.
- Some stand at the start of the sentence (However, ...), some in the middle (..., but ...).
- Ekleme: and, also, too, as well, moreover, in addition, furthermore (ve, ayrıca, dahası).
- Zıtlık: but, however, although, though, despite, in spite of, whereas, while, nevertheless (ama, ancak, rağmen, oysa).
- Sebep: because, since, as, because of, due to (çünkü, -diği için, nedeniyle).
- Sonuç: so, therefore, as a result, consequently, thus (bu yüzden, bunun sonucunda).
- Amaç: so that, in order to, to (için, -ebilmek için).
- Koşul: if, unless, as long as, provided that (eğer, -medikçe, sürece).
- Zaman: when, while, before, after, as soon as, until (-diğinde, -iken, önce, sonra).
- Kritik ayrım 1: because + CÜMLE vs. because of + İSİM.
- Kritik ayrım 2: although + CÜMLE vs. despite/in spite of + İSİM.
- Noktalama: cümle başında bağlaçtan sonra virgül (However, ...); iki cümleyi birleştiren however önünde noktalı virgül (; however,).
- Addition: and, also, too, as well, moreover, in addition, furthermore (ve, ayrıca, dahası).
- Contrast: but, however, although, though, despite, in spite of, whereas, while, nevertheless (ama, ancak, rağmen, oysa).
- Cause: because, since, as, because of, due to (çünkü, -diği için, nedeniyle).
- Result: so, therefore, as a result, consequently, thus (bu yüzden, bunun sonucunda).
- Purpose: so that, in order to, to (için, -ebilmek için).
- Condition: if, unless, as long as, provided that (eğer, -medikçe, sürece).
- Time: when, while, before, after, as soon as, until (-diğinde, -iken, önce, sonra).
- Critical distinction 1: because + CLAUSE vs. because of + NOUN.
- Critical distinction 2: although + CLAUSE vs. despite/in spite of + NOUN.
- Punctuation: a comma after a linker at the start of a sentence (However, ...); a semicolon before however when it joins two clauses (; however,).
- Eşgüdümlü (FANBOYS) and, but, so, or → cümle + , + bağlaç + cümle.
- Yan cümle bağlacı because, although, when, if → yan cümle tek başına duramaz.
- Bağlaç-edat despite, because of → arkasına isim ya da -ing.
- Bağlaç-zarfı however, therefore → noktalı virgül/yeni cümle, ardından virgül.
Bağlaçlar dört dilbilgisel gruba ayrılır ve her grup arkasına farklı bir yapı alır. Doğru cümle kurmanın anahtarı, bağlacın hangi gruba ait olduğunu bilmektir.
1) Eşgüdümlü bağlaçlar (FANBOYS): cümle + , + bağlaç + cümle
İki bağımsız cümleyi birleştirir. Genellikle önlerine virgül gelir. Formül: Cümle1 , and/but/so/or Cümle2.
2) Yan cümle bağlaçları: bağlaç + CÜMLE (özne + fiil)
Arkasına tam cümle (özne + fiil) alır. Yan cümle başta olursa arkasına virgül gelir; sonda olursa virgül gerekmez. Formül: Although/Because/When özne+fiil, ana cümle. — VEYA — Ana cümle although/because/when özne+fiil.
3) Bağlaç işlevli edatlar: edat + İSİM / -ing
Arkasına isim veya -ing alır, ASLA özne+fiilli tam cümle almaz. Formül: Despite/Because of/Due to + isim, ana cümle.
4) Bağlaç-zarfları (geçiş sözcükleri): cümle. Bağlaç-zarfı, cümle
İki bağımsız cümleyi bağlar ama önlerine nokta veya noktalı virgül, arkalarına virgül gelir. Formül: Cümle1; however, Cümle2. — VEYA — Cümle1. However, Cümle2.
| Grup | Örnek bağlaç | Arkasına gelen | Noktalama |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eşgüdümlü (FANBOYS) | and, but, so, or | bağımsız cümle | önünde virgül |
| Yan cümle bağlacı | because, although, when, if | cümle (özne+fiil) | başta ise arkasına virgül |
| Bağlaç-edat | despite, because of, due to | isim / -ing | başta ise arkasına virgül |
| Bağlaç-zarfı | however, therefore, moreover | bağımsız cümle | önünde ; veya . / arkasında virgül |
- Coordinating (FANBOYS) and, but, so, or → clause + , + linker + clause.
- Subordinating conjunction because, although, when, if → the subordinate clause cannot stand alone.
- Linking preposition despite, because of → a noun or -ing after it.
- Conjunctive adverb however, therefore → semicolon/new sentence, then a comma.
Linkers fall into four grammatical groups, and each group takes a different structure after it. The key to building correct sentences is knowing which group a linker belongs to.
1) Coordinating conjunctions (FANBOYS): clause + , + linker + clause
It joins two independent clauses. A comma usually comes before them. Formula: Clause1 , and/but/so/or Clause2.
2) Subordinating conjunctions: linker + CLAUSE (subject + verb)
It takes a full clause (subject + verb) after it. If the subordinate clause is at the front, a comma follows it; if at the end, no comma is needed. Formula: Although/Because/When subject+verb, main clause. — OR — Main clause although/because/when subject+verb.
3) Linking prepositions: preposition + NOUN / -ing
It takes a noun or -ing after it, NEVER a full clause with subject+verb. Formula: Despite/Because of/Due to + noun, main clause.
4) Conjunctive adverbs (transitions): clause. Conjunctive adverb, clause
It connects two independent clauses, but a full stop or semicolon comes before them and a comma after them. Formula: Clause1; however, Clause2. — OR — Clause1. However, Clause2.
| Group | Example linker | What follows | Punctuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coordinating (FANBOYS) | and, but, so, or | independent clause | comma before |
| Subordinating conjunction | because, although, when, if | clause (subject+verb) | comma after if at the front |
| Linking preposition | despite, because of, due to | noun / -ing | comma after if at the front |
| Conjunctive adverb | however, therefore, moreover | independent clause | ; or . before / comma after |
Ekleme
and, also, too (günlük) → moreover, in addition, furthermore (resmî).
Zıtlık
but, though → however, nevertheless, whereas; rağmen için although / despite.
Sebep–sonuç
Sebep: because, since, due to. Sonuç: so, therefore, as a result.
1) Ekleme (ve, ayrıca, dahası) — en yaygın
Bir fikre yeni bilgi eklersin. Günlükte and, also, too, as well; resmi yazıda moreover, in addition, furthermore. Resmiyet arttıkça kelime uzar.
2) Zıtlık (ama, ancak, oysa, rağmen)
Beklenene ters bir durum sunarsın. but günlük; however resmi geçiş; although/though yan cümle; despite/in spite of isimle; whereas/while iki farkı karşılaştırır.
3) Sebep (çünkü, -diği için, nedeniyle)
Bir şeyin nedenini verirsin. because en yaygın (cümle); since/as daha resmi ve genelde başta; because of/due to isimle.
4) Sonuç (bu yüzden, bunun sonucunda)
Sebepten çıkan sonucu verirsin. so günlük; therefore, as a result, consequently, thus resmi ve akademik.
5) Amaç (için, -ebilmek için)
Bir eylemin amacını verirsin. to + yalın fiil (aynı özne); so that + özne+fiil (farklı özne veya modal); in order to resmi.
6) Koşul ve zaman (eğer, -medikçe, -diğinde)
Addition
and, also, too (informal) → moreover, in addition, furthermore (formal).
Contrast
but, though → however, nevertheless, whereas; for concession although / despite.
Cause and effect
Cause: because, since, due to. Result: so, therefore, as a result.
1) Addition (ve, ayrıca, dahası) — the most common
You add new information to an idea. In everyday use and, also, too, as well; in formal writing moreover, in addition, furthermore. As formality increases, the word gets longer.
2) Contrast (ama, ancak, oysa, rağmen)
You present a situation contrary to what is expected. but is everyday; however a formal transition; although/though a subordinate clause; despite/in spite of with a noun; whereas/while compares two differences.
3) Cause (çünkü, -diği için, nedeniyle)
You give the reason for something. because is the most common (clause); since/as more formal and usually at the front; because of/due to with a noun.
4) Result (bu yüzden, bunun sonucunda)
You give the result that follows from the cause. so is everyday; therefore, as a result, consequently, thus formal and academic.
5) Purpose (için, -ebilmek için)
You give the purpose of an action. to + bare verb (same subject); so that + subject+verb (different subject or a modal); in order to formal.
6) Condition and time (eğer, -medikçe, -diğinde)
Bazı kelimeler belirli bir anlam ilişkisinin sinyalidir. Aşağıdaki tablo, hangi anlamda hangi bağlaçların kullanıldığını gösterir. Ama dikkat: aynı kelime bağlama göre farklı işlev görebilir (örneğin as hem 'çünkü' hem '-iken' anlamına gelir).
| Anlam ilişkisi | Günlük | Resmi / Akademik |
|---|---|---|
| Ekleme | and, also, too, plus | moreover, furthermore, in addition |
| Zıtlık | but, though, yet | however, nevertheless, on the other hand |
| Karşıtlık (rağmen) | although, even though | despite / in spite of + isim, notwithstanding |
| Sebep | because, since | as, due to, owing to |
| Sonuç | so | therefore, consequently, thus, as a result |
| Amaç | to, so that | in order to, so as to |
| Sıralama | first, then, next, finally | firstly, subsequently, ultimately |
Some words are the signal of a particular meaning relationship. The table below shows which linkers are used for which meaning. But be careful: the same word can serve different functions depending on context (for example, as means both 'because' and 'while').
| Meaning relationship | Everyday | Formal / Academic |
|---|---|---|
| Addition | and, also, too, plus | moreover, furthermore, in addition |
| Contrast | but, though, yet | however, nevertheless, on the other hand |
| Concession (despite) | although, even though | despite / in spite of + noun, notwithstanding |
| Cause | because, since | as, due to, owing to |
| Result | so | therefore, consequently, thus, as a result |
| Purpose | to, so that | in order to, so as to |
| Sequencing | first, then, next, finally | firstly, subsequently, ultimately |
Üçü de zıtlık kurar, resmiyet artar: but (günlük, cümle ortası) → however (resmî, iki cümle arası) → nevertheless (çok resmî, güçlü karşıtlık).
Aynı anlam ilişkisini kuran bağlaçlar birbirinin tam eşdeğeri değildir. Register (resmiyet), vurgu ve konum farkları vardır. Bunları bilmek, yazını 'düz' olmaktan çıkarıp olgunlaştırır.
but vs. however vs. nevertheless — resmiyet merdiveni
Üçü de zıtlık kurar ama resmiyet artar: but (günlük, cümle ortası) < however (resmi, iki cümle arası) < nevertheless (çok resmi, güçlü karşıtlık). Konuşmada 'nevertheless' kullanırsan kitabî durursun; akademik yazıda 'but' ile cümleye başlarsan (mümkün ama) daha az resmi durursun.
although vs. though vs. even though — vurgu farkı
although ve even though yan cümle başlatır; even though daha güçlü, daha vurguludur ('gerçekten öyle olmasına rağmen'). though ise günlüktür ve ilginç biçimde cümle sonuna da gelebilir (It's cold. I'll go out, though.) — bu kullanım 'ama yine de' anlamı verir ve konuşmada çok yaygındır.
so that vs. to — amaç yapısında özne kuralı
Amaç bildirirken özneler aynıysa to + fiil yeterlidir. Ama iki cümlenin öznesi farklıysa ya da bir modal (could, would) gerekiyorsa so that + özne + fiil kullanılır.
All three build contrast, with rising formality: but (informal, mid-sentence) → however (formal, between two clauses) → nevertheless (very formal, strong contrast).
Linkers that build the same meaning relationship are not exact equivalents of one another. There are differences of register (formality), emphasis and position. Knowing these lifts your writing out of being 'flat' and matures it.
but vs. however vs. nevertheless — the formality ladder
All three build contrast but with rising formality: but (informal, mid-sentence) < however (formal, between two clauses) < nevertheless (very formal, strong contrast). If you use 'nevertheless' in speech you sound bookish; if you start a sentence with 'but' in academic writing (possible, but) you seem less formal.
although vs. though vs. even though — a difference in emphasis
although and even though start a subordinate clause; even though is stronger and more emphatic ('even though it really is so'). though, on the other hand, is everyday and, interestingly, can also come at the end of the sentence (It's cold. I'll go out, though.) — this use gives the sense 'but still' and is very common in speech.
so that vs. to — the subject rule in purpose structures
When expressing purpose, if the subjects are the same, to + verb is enough. But if the two clauses have different subjects or a modal (could, would) is needed, so that + subject + verb is used.
Türkçe
Tek kelime iki işi görür: rağmen hem isimle hem cümleyle çalışır.
İngilizce
İki ayrı kelimeye böler: although + cümle / despite + isim.
Türkçe bağlaçlar İngilizceden iki temel noktada ayrılır. Birincisi: Türkçede bağlaç çoğu zaman ekle ifade edilir (-diği için, -mesine rağmen) ve tek bir kelime hem isimle hem eylemle çalışır. İngilizcede ise bunlar ayrı kelimelere bölünür (because / because of; although / despite). İkincisi: Türkçede bağlaç sıklıkla cümle sonuna yakın gelir, İngilizcede ise cümlenin başında veya ortasında durur.
- Türkçe 'rağmen' = İngilizce although (cümle) VEYA despite (isim). Tek Türkçe kelime, iki İngilizce yapı.
- Türkçe '-diği için' = because (cümle) VEYA because of (isim). Yine tek Türkçe yapı, iki İngilizce yol.
- Türkçe 'ama/ancak' zıtlığı çoğu zaman iki bağımsız cümle arasında 'however' ile kurulur; noktalama İngilizcede kritiktir.
- Türkçede 'çünkü' hem cümle başına hem ortaya gelebilir; İngilizce 'because' başa gelince arkasına virgül ister.
Turkish
A single word does two jobs: rağmen works with both a noun and a clause.
English
It splits into two separate words: although + clause / despite + noun.
Turkish linkers differ from English on two basic points. First: in Turkish a linker is often expressed with a suffix (-diği için, -mesine rağmen) and a single word works with both a noun and a verb. In English these split into separate words (because / because of; although / despite). Second: in Turkish a linker often comes near the end of the sentence, while in English it stands at the start or the middle of the sentence.
- Turkish 'rağmen' = English although (clause) OR despite (noun). One Turkish word, two English structures.
- Turkish '-diği için' = because (clause) OR because of (noun). Again one Turkish structure, two English paths.
- The Turkish 'ama/ancak' contrast is often built with 'however' between two independent clauses; punctuation is critical in English.
- In Turkish 'çünkü' can come both at the start and in the middle of a sentence; when English 'because' comes at the front it requires a comma after it.
Bağlaçlar başka birkaç yapıyla karışır. Aşağıdaki tablo, karışan yapıları ve farklarını gösterir.
| Yapı | İşlev | Örnek | Fark |
|---|---|---|---|
| so (sonuç bağlacı) | sebep→sonuç bağlar | It was late, so we left. | iki cümleyi bağlar |
| so ... that (derece) | sonuç + derece vurgusu | It was so late that we left. | sıfat/zarfla derece bildirir — bkz. so / such / too / enough |
| which/who (ilgi) | isme cümle ekler | The man who called was angry. | bağlaç değil, ilgi zamiri — bkz. İlgi Cümlecikleri |
| that (aktarım) | dolaylı anlatım açar | He said that he was tired. | bağlaç ama içerik cümlesi — bkz. Dolaylı Anlatım |
Linkers are confused with a few other structures. The table below shows the confused structures and their differences.
| Structure | Function | Example | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| so (result linker) | links cause→result | It was late, so we left. | joins two clauses |
| so ... that (degree) | result + degree emphasis | It was so late that we left. | states degree with an adjective/adverb — see so / such / too / enough |
| which/who (relative) | adds a clause to a noun | The man who called was angry. | not a linker but a relative pronoun — see Relative Clauses |
| that (reporting) | opens indirect speech | He said that he was tired. | a linker but a content clause — see Reported Speech |
despite/although karışması. Despite of the rain / Despite she was tired ✗ → Despite the rain (isim) / Although she was tired (cümle) ✓.
despite/although confused. Despite of the rain / Despite she was tired ✗ → Despite the rain (noun) / Although she was tired (clause) ✓.
Bağlaçlarda birkaç ince ama gerçek istisna vardır. İleri seviyede bunları tanımak, yazını doğal ve olgun gösterir.
1) Cümle başında and / but / so
Okulda 'cümleye and/but ile başlama' denir ama gerçek İngilizcede bu yaygın ve kabul edilir — vurgu ve ritim için kullanılır. Sadece çok resmi akademik yazıda ölçülü olmak gerekir.
2) though cümle sonunda
although cümle sonuna gelemez, ama though gelebilir ve 'ama yine de' anlamı verir. Sadece konuşma/gayriresmi yazıdadır.
3) Devrik yapı: 'no sooner ... than', 'hardly ... when'
İleri, resmi kalıplar. Olumsuz zarf cümle başına gelince özne–fiil devrilir.
There are a few subtle but real exceptions with linkers. Recognising these at an advanced level makes your writing look natural and mature.
1) and / but / so at the start of a sentence
At school people say 'don't start a sentence with and/but', but in real English this is common and acceptable — it is used for emphasis and rhythm. Only in very formal academic writing do you need to be measured.
2) though at the end of the sentence
although cannot come at the end of the sentence, but though can, and gives the sense 'but still'. It is only in speech/informal writing.
3) Inversion: 'no sooner ... than', 'hardly ... when'
Advanced, formal patterns. When a negative adverb comes at the start of the sentence, the subject and verb invert.
Günlük konuşmada uzun resmi bağlaçlar (nevertheless, consequently) nadir kullanılır. Bunun yerine and, but, so, because ('cos'), though hakimdir. Aşağıdaki diyalog doğal bir sohbette bağlaçların nasıl aktığını gösterir.
In everyday conversation, long formal linkers (nevertheless, consequently) are rarely used. Instead, and, but, so, because ('cos'), though dominate. The dialogue below shows how linkers flow in a natural conversation.
Akademik yazıda bağlaçlar metnin mantıksal iskeletini kurar. Okur, argümanın nereye gittiğini geçiş sözcüklerinden anlar. Resmi register however, therefore, moreover, nevertheless, consequently, in contrast, furthermore gibi bağlaçları tercih eder; günlük 'so, but, and' seyrekleşir. Ayrıca cümle başı geçişlerden sonra virgül neredeyse zorunludur.
- 'However' cümle başında karşıt görüş sunuyor; virgülle ayrılmış.
- 'Although sleep... supports' = yan cümle + cümle; despite değil çünkü tam cümle var.
- 'Moreover' ve 'Furthermore' benzeri ekleme; argüman katmanlandırılıyor.
- 'Because of these... factors' = because of + isim öbeği (of ile).
- 'Nevertheless' güçlü karşıtlık; önceki çekinceye rağmen genel sonuç.
- 'As a result' somut sonuç bildiriyor.
- 'In spite of this advice' = in spite of + isim; despite'ın 'of'lu eşi.
In academic writing, linkers build the logical skeleton of the text. The reader understands where the argument is going from the transition words. Formal register prefers linkers such as however, therefore, moreover, nevertheless, consequently, in contrast, furthermore; everyday 'so, but, and' become rarer. Also, a comma after sentence-initial transitions is almost obligatory.
- 'However' at the start of the sentence presents an opposing view; separated by a comma.
- 'Although sleep... supports' = subordinate clause + clause; not despite, because there is a full clause.
- 'Moreover' and 'Furthermore' similar addition; the argument is being layered.
- 'Because of these... factors' = because of + noun phrase (with of).
- 'Nevertheless' strong contrast; the general conclusion despite the earlier caveat.
- 'As a result' states a concrete result.
- 'In spite of this advice' = in spite of + noun; the 'of' counterpart of despite.
- 'because flights had become expensive' = because + tam cümle (sebep).
- 'since I had never travelled' = since sebep bağlacı, 'zira/-diği için'.
- 'However, I promised' = cümle başı geçiş, virgülle.
- 'although the weather was grey' = although + cümle (karşıtlık).
- 'but... so' = zıtlık sonra sonuç, ardışık.
- 'Because she knew... she showed' = yan cümle başta, ana cümle sonra.
- 'Despite the crowds' = despite + isim (of yok).
- 'Even though my German was terrible' = güçlü karşıtlık, cümle alır.
- 'While I was there' = while burada zaman ('-iken/-ken'), zıtlık değil.
- 'Whereas Berlin felt modern' = whereas iki şehri karşılaştırıyor.
- 'however, my money was running out' = noktalı virgülden sonra geçiş.
- 'so that I could afford' = amaç, farklı sonuç + modal (could).
- 'rather than restaurants' = 'yerine/-mektense', karşıtlık kuran öbek.
- 'As a result' = somut sonuç.
- 'In spite of the budget problems' = in spite of + isim.
- 'Not only... but also' = güçlü ekleme kalıbı; başta devrik (Not only did I see).
- 'not because... but because' = ikili sebep karşıtlığı, ileri kalıp.
- 'Therefore, I would recommend' = resmi sonuç bağlacı.
- 'provided that they are... flexible' = koşul bağlacı, 'şu şartla ki'.
- 'As long as you stay curious' = koşul bağlacı, 'sürece'.
- 'because flights had become expensive' = because + full clause (cause).
- 'since I had never travelled' = since as a cause linker, 'seeing that / because'.
- 'However, I promised' = sentence-initial transition, with a comma.
- 'although the weather was grey' = although + clause (concession).
- 'but... so' = contrast then result, in sequence.
- 'Because she knew... she showed' = subordinate clause first, main clause after.
- 'Despite the crowds' = despite + noun (no of).
- 'Even though my German was terrible' = strong contrast, takes a clause.
- 'While I was there' = while here is time ('while'), not contrast.
- 'Whereas Berlin felt modern' = whereas compares the two cities.
- 'however, my money was running out' = a transition after a semicolon.
- 'so that I could afford' = purpose, a different result + modal (could).
- 'rather than restaurants' = 'instead of', a phrase that builds contrast.
- 'As a result' = a concrete result.
- 'In spite of the budget problems' = in spite of + noun.
- 'Not only... but also' = a strong addition pattern; inverted at the front (Not only did I see).
- 'not because... but because' = a double cause-contrast, an advanced pattern.
- 'Therefore, I would recommend' = a formal result linker.
- 'provided that they are... flexible' = a conditional linker, 'on condition that'.
- 'As long as you stay curious' = a conditional linker, 'as long as'.
Temel (A2) — and, but, because, so

Bu sorular kuralı değil anlamı test eder. Cümlenin mantığına bakarak bağlacın doğru kullanılıp kullanılmadığını düşün.
- 'It was raining, so we stayed dry.' — Mantık doğru mu?Hayır. 'so' sonuç bildirir ama yağmurda ıslanmak beklenir, kuru kalmak değil. Doğrusu 'but' veya 'however': It was raining, but we stayed dry.
- 'Despite she was tired, she continued.' — Yapı doğru mu?Hayır. despite arkasına tam cümle (she was tired) alamaz. Doğrusu 'Although she was tired' veya 'Despite her tiredness'.
- 'I studied hard, therefore I could pass.' — Bağlaç anlamı yerinde mi?Evet, mantık doğru (sebep→sonuç). Ama noktalama eksik: 'I studied hard; therefore, I passed.' olmalı. Ayrıca 'could' yerine 'passed' daha doğal.
- 'Because of the traffic was heavy, I was late.' — Doğru mu?Hayır. Arkasında tam cümle (the traffic was heavy) var, o yüzden 'because' gerekir. 'because of' sadece isimle: 'Because of the heavy traffic...'.
- 'He is rich, whereas he is generous.' — whereas yerinde mi?Hayır. whereas ZITLIK/karşıtlık ister ama zengin olmak ve cömert olmak zıt değil. Ekleme isteniyorsa 'and': 'He is rich and generous.'
These questions test not the rule but the meaning. Looking at the logic of the sentence, think about whether the linker is used correctly.
- 'It was raining, so we stayed dry.' — Is the logic correct? No. 'so' states a result, but in the rain getting wet is expected, not staying dry. The correct linker is 'but' or 'however': It was raining, but we stayed dry.
- 'Despite she was tired, she continued.' — Is the structure correct? No. despite cannot take a full clause (she was tired) after it. The correct form is 'Although she was tired' or 'Despite her tiredness'.
- 'I studied hard, therefore I could pass.' — Is the linker's meaning appropriate?Yes, the logic is correct (cause→result). But the punctuation is missing: it should be 'I studied hard; therefore, I passed.' Also, 'passed' is more natural than 'could'.
- 'Because of the traffic was heavy, I was late.' — Is it correct? No. There is a full clause after it (the traffic was heavy), so 'because' is needed. 'because of' only with a noun: 'Because of the heavy traffic...'.

Görev: Sevdiğin bir şehri veya yeri anlatan 120-150 kelimelik bir paragraf yaz. Amacın en az 6 farklı bağlaç kullanmak: bir ekleme (and/moreover), bir zıtlık (but/however), bir karşıtlık (although/despite), bir sebep (because/since), bir sonuç (so/therefore) ve bir karşılaştırma (whereas/while).
- Rehber soru 1: Bu yeri neden seviyorsun? (because / since ile sebep ver)
- Rehber soru 2: Bir olumsuz yanı var mı? (although / however / but ile zıtlık kur)
- Rehber soru 3: Başka bir yerle nasıl kıyaslarsın? (whereas / while ile karşılaştır)
- Rehber soru 4: Sonuç olarak ne öneriyorsun? (so / therefore ile bağla)
- Örnek paragrafI love Istanbul because it connects two continents in one city. Although it is crowded and often noisy, the energy is unlike anywhere else. The historic peninsula is full of mosques and palaces; moreover, the Bosphorus offers stunning views at sunset. Many tourists visit only the famous sights. However, the real charm lies in the small backstreets, where locals drink tea and chat for hours. Whereas modern districts feel fast and global, the old neighbourhoods seem timeless. Getting around can be difficult because of the traffic, so I usually take the ferry. In spite of its problems, Istanbul remains my favourite city, and I would recommend it to anyone who loves history, food and the sea. (Bağlaçlar: because, Although, moreover, However, Whereas, because of, so, In spite of, and)

- Guiding question 1: Why do you love this place? (give a cause with because / since)
- Guiding question 2: Is there a downside? (build a contrast with although / however / but)
- Guiding question 3: How would you compare it with another place? (compare with whereas / while)
- Guiding question 4: What do you recommend as a conclusion? (link with so / therefore)

Kavram kontrol soruları (CCQ): 'Despite the rain' — despite'tan sonra fiil koyabilir miyim? (Hayır, isim.) 'Although it rained' — although'dan sonra özne ve fiil var mı? (Evet.) 'It was late, so we left' — 'so' sebep mi sonuç mu gösteriyor? (Sonuç.) Bu sorular kuralı ezberletmez, mantığı oturtur.
Etkinlik fikirleri: (1) Kart eşleştirme: yarım cümleler iki sette — 'Although it was cold...' ve '...we went swimming' — öğrenciler mantıklı eşleri bulur. (2) Bağlaç ışığı: öğretmen bir anlam söyler (zıtlık!), öğrenciler doğru grup bağlaç üretir. (3) Hikaye zinciri: her öğrenci bir cümle ekler ama mutlaka bir bağlaçla başlar — akış ve tutarlılık pratiği.
Concept-checking questions (CCQ): 'Despite the rain' — can I put a verb after despite? (No, a noun.) 'Although it rained' — is there a subject and verb after although? (Yes.) 'It was late, so we left' — does 'so' show a cause or a result? (A result.) These questions do not make students memorise the rule; they settle the logic.
Activity ideas: (1) Card matching: half-sentences in two sets — 'Although it was cold...' and '...we went swimming' — students find the logical pairs. (2) Linker light: the teacher says a meaning (contrast!), students produce a linker from the right group. (3) Story chain: each student adds a sentence but must start with a linker — practice for flow and coherence.
- Bağlaçlar fikirleri bağlar: ekleme (and, moreover), zıtlık (but, however), karşıtlık (although, despite), sebep (because, since), sonuç (so, therefore), amaç (so that, to), karşılaştırma (whereas).
- Dört dilbilgisel grup var; her biri arkasına farklı yapı alır: FANBOYS (cümle), yan cümle bağlacı (cümle), bağlaç-edat (isim/-ing), bağlaç-zarfı (cümle + noktalı virgül/nokta).
- En kritik iki ayrım: because + CÜMLE / because of + İSİM ve although + CÜMLE / despite + İSİM.
- 'despite of' yoktur; ya 'despite + isim' ya 'in spite of + isim'.
- although ile but AYNI cümlede kullanılmaz; İngilizce bir zıtlığı tek bağlaçla kurar.
- however iki cümleyi virgülle bağlayamaz; önüne noktalı virgül/nokta, arkasına virgül gelir.
- Resmiyet arttıkça bağlaç uzar: but < however < nevertheless; so < therefore < consequently.
- Amaçta özne aynıysa 'to + fiil', farklıysa 'so that + özne + fiil'.
- İpucu kelimeler garanti değildir: while/as birden çok işlev görebilir; cümlenin mantığına bak.
- İlgili yapılar için: so / such / too / enough (derece), İlgi Cümlecikleri (ilgi cümleleri), Dolaylı Anlatım (dolaylı anlatım).
- Linkers connect ideas: addition (and, moreover), contrast (but, however), concession (although, despite), cause (because, since), result (so, therefore), purpose (so that, to), comparison (whereas).
- There are four grammatical groups; each takes a different structure after it: FANBOYS (clause), subordinating conjunction (clause), linking preposition (noun/-ing), conjunctive adverb (clause + semicolon/full stop).
- The two most critical distinctions: because + CLAUSE / because of + NOUN and although + CLAUSE / despite + NOUN.
- There is no 'despite of'; either 'despite + noun' or 'in spite of + noun'.
- although and but are NOT used in the SAME sentence; English builds a contrast with a single linker.
- however cannot join two clauses with a comma; a semicolon/full stop comes before it, a comma after it.
- As formality increases, the linker gets longer: but < however < nevertheless; so < therefore < consequently.
- In purpose, if the subject is the same 'to + verb', if different 'so that + subject + verb'.
- Clue words are not a guarantee: while/as can serve more than one function; look at the logic of the sentence.
- For related structures: so / such / too / enough (degree), Relative Clauses (relative clauses), Reported Speech (reported speech).
