IELTS Listening tek dinlemede çözülen, hız ve dikkat isteyen bir bölümdür. Bu rehber sınavın dört bölümünü, on soru tipini, ses akışındaki tuzakları ve yazım-format kurallarını örneklerle açar; band 6 ile band 8 arasındaki farkı dinleme davranışı düzeyinde gösterir.
IELTS Listening is a section solved on a single listen, demanding speed and attention. This guide opens up the four sections of the exam, the ten question types, the traps in the audio flow and the spelling-and-format rules with examples; it shows the difference between band 6 and band 8 at the level of listening behaviour.
IELTS Listening is the same for all candidates: the Academic and General Training modules take the identical test in this section. The recording lasts about 30 minutes and plays only once. In the paper-based exam you are given 10 minutes of transfer time at the end to copy your answers onto the answer sheet; in the computer-based exam there is no transfer time, only 2 minutes of checking time instead, because you have already typed your answers on screen.
The test is divided into four sections (parts) with 10 questions each; 40 questions in total. The difficulty rises gradually from section to section: Section 1 is the easiest, Section 4 the hardest. Before each section there is a short gap for you to read the questions, and in most there is a second reading gap in the middle or at the end.
| Section | Context | Speaker | Recording type | Difficulty |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Section 1 | Everyday / social (booking, membership, order) | 2 people | Dialogue | Easiest |
| Section 2 | Everyday / social (tour, facility introduction, announcement) | 1 person | Monologue | Easy-medium |
| Section 3 | Education / academic (assignment, project discussion) | 2–4 people | Dialogue / discussion | Hard |
| Section 4 | Academic (a university lecture) | 1 person | Monologue / lecture | Hardest |
Your raw score (number correct out of 40) is converted to a 9-point band score with a conversion table. The table below is an approximate guide; the actual thresholds can shift by a few questions each session, but it is a reliable reference for planning how many correct you need for your target band.
| Correct (/40) | Band | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 39–40 | 9.0 | Almost flawless |
| 37–38 | 8.5 | Very strong |
| 35–36 | 8.0 | Strong — comfortable for university targets |
| 32–34 | 7.5 | Good |
| 30–31 | 7.0 | Enough for most postgraduate study |
| 26–29 | 6.5 | Upper-middle |
| 23–25 | 6.0 | The threshold for many undergraduate programmes |
| 18–22 | 5.5 | Basic proficiency |
| 16–17 | 5.0 | A level that needs improvement |
The practical upshot: for band 7 you have a margin of only 9–10 mistakes across 40 questions; for band 8, 4–5. This means that even a single spelling or plural error in the "easy" Sections 1 and 2 can lower your band. So the strategy is not just to understand the hard sections but to make zero slips in the easy ones.
— Could I take your surname, please?
— Yes, it's Harrington. H-A-double R-I-N-G-T-O-N.
— Thank you. And a contact number?
— It's oh-seven-nine-double-four, one-two-three... sorry, one-two-eight, oh-six-five.
Soru: Surname: ________ | Phone: 0794 41 2 ___ 065
Cevap: Harrington / 8. Konuşmacı "three" dedi, sonra "sorry, one-two-eight" diyerek düzeltti. Son söylenen sayı doğru cevaptır; ilk duyduğunuzu yazıp geçerseniz tuzağa düşersiniz. "double R" = RR, "oh" = 0.
The first section is an everyday, functional conversation between two people: a customer and a receptionist, a tenant and an estate agent, a customer and a call-centre operator. The aim is an exchange of information — name, address, date, phone, price, preference. The language is simple but the information density is high: numbers, names spelled out and figures come one after another.
Section 1 almost always begins with form / note completion. Its ease is deceptive: the easiest 10 questions of your score are here, so the target is 100% correct. The main challenge is not understanding but writing correctly and not missing a spoken "correction".
— Could I take your surname, please?
— Yes, it's Harrington. H-A-double R-I-N-G-T-O-N.
— Thank you. And a contact number?
— It's oh-seven-nine-double-four, one-two-three... sorry, one-two-eight, oh-six-five.
Question: Surname: ________ | Phone: 0794 41 2 ___ 065
Answer: Harrington / 8. The speaker said "three", then corrected it with "sorry, one-two-eight". The last number said is the correct answer; if you write down the first thing you hear and move on, you fall into the trap. "double R" = RR, "oh" = 0.
Konuşmacı bir mekânı sözlü olarak gezdirir; yön ifadelerini (opposite, next to, at the far end, on your left) takip etmeniz gerekir. Ayrıca multiple choice da yaygındır.
As you come through the main entrance, the café is immediately on your right. Walk past it and you'll reach a junction; the changing rooms are straight ahead, but the pool itself is reached by turning left and going to the very end of the corridor.
Soru: Krokide "Pool" hangi harf? (Girişten sola dön, koridorun sonu.)
Yaklaşım: Parmağını girişe koy ve konuşmacıyla birlikte hareket ettir. "Straight ahead" changing rooms içindir — havuz DEĞİL; bunu havuz sanmak klasik distractor hatasıdır.
The second section is a monologue in which a single speaker describes an everyday/social topic: introducing a municipal facility, a festival programme, a tour of a new sports centre, an explanation of a volunteering programme. The speaker addresses an audience, so the language is still simple but the flow is one-way — there is no question-answer rhythm, information flows without interruption.
This section often contains map/plan labelling or matching. The speaker guides you around a place verbally; you need to follow the direction expressions (opposite, next to, at the far end, on your left). Multiple choice is also common.
As you come through the main entrance, the café is immediately on your right. Walk past it and you'll reach a junction; the changing rooms are straight ahead, but the pool itself is reached by turning left and going to the very end of the corridor.
Question: Which letter is the "Pool" on the plan? (From the entrance, turn left, end of the corridor.)
Approach: Put your finger on the entrance and move it with the speaker. "Straight ahead" is for the changing rooms — NOT the pool; mistaking this for the pool is the classic distractor error.
Üçüncü bölüm eğitim bağlamında, genellikle iki öğrenci ile bir öğretim görevlisi (ya da iki öğrenci) arasında bir tartışmadır: bir ödevin planlanması, bir deney raporunun gözden geçirilmesi, bir sunum için görev paylaşımı. Zorluk sıçraması burada gerçekleşir. Çünkü artık birden fazla ses vardır, konuşmacılar birbirinin sözünü keser, fikir değiştirir ve dolaylı konuşur ("I'm not so sure about that", "You've got a point, but...").
Yaygın soru tipleri: multiple choice, matching (kim hangi görüşü savunuyor / hangi öğe hangi kategoriye ait) ve flowchart/table completion. Anahtar beceri, kelimeleri değil fikir sahibini ve fikrin yönünü takip etmektir: kim katılıyor, kim itiraz ediyor, sonunda hangi karara varılıyor.
— I thought we'd focus the survey on first-year students.
— Hmm, we could, but honestly the response rate from them is always low. Postgraduates might give us richer data.
— Good point. Let's target them instead.
Soru (MC): Anket hangi gruba yapılacak? A) first-year students B) postgraduates C) all students
Cevap: B. "First-year students" ilk önerildi ama "but... low response rate" ile reddedildi; "Let's target them instead" nihai kararı postgraduates'e taşıdı. İlk duyulan seçeneği işaretlemek en sık yapılan Section 3 hatasıdır.
The third section is a discussion in an educational context, usually between two students and a tutor (or two students): planning an assignment, reviewing an experiment report, dividing tasks for a presentation. The jump in difficulty happens here. Because now there are multiple voices, the speakers interrupt each other, change their minds and speak indirectly ("I'm not so sure about that", "You've got a point, but...").
Common question types: multiple choice, matching (who holds which view / which item belongs to which category) and flowchart/table completion. The key skill is to follow not the words but the owner of the idea and the direction of the idea: who agrees, who objects, what decision is finally reached.
— I thought we'd focus the survey on first-year students.
— Hmm, we could, but honestly the response rate from them is always low. Postgraduates might give us richer data.
— Good point. Let's target them instead.
Question (MC): Which group will the survey be given to? A) first-year students B) postgraduates C) all students
Answer: B. "First-year students" was suggested first but rejected with "but... low response rate"; "Let's target them instead" moved the final decision to postgraduates. Marking the first option you hear is the most common Section 3 mistake.
Dördüncü bölüm tek bir akademisyenin verdiği, kesintisiz bir üniversite dersidir: buzul erozyonu, arıların gezinme davranışı, kentsel tarım, bir tarihsel keşfin ekonomisi. En zor bölümdür çünkü ortada okuma molası yoktur — 10 sorunun tamamını tek bir sürekli akışta cevaplarsınız; kaybederseniz yakalayacak duraklama yoktur.
Neredeyse her zaman note completion (ve bazen sentence completion) içerir; notlar dersin mantıksal yapısını yansıtır: başlık → alt başlık → ayrıntı. İyi haber: notların düzeni dersin sırasını takip eder, yani nerede olduğunuzu takip edebilirsiniz. Zorluk, akademik kelime hazinesi ve konuşmacının hızlı, işaret-ifadeli (signposting) anlatımıdır.
Early beekeepers assumed the hive was led by a "king". It was only in the seventeenth century that microscopy revealed the central bee was in fact a queen, and that most of the workforce were sterile females. Drones, the males, had a single function: reproduction.
Notlar: Central bee = a ________ (not a king) · Most workers = sterile ________ · Drones' role = ________
Cevaplar: queen · females · reproduction. Dikkat: soru "sterile ______" diyor; boşluğa yalnızca "females" gelir, "sterile females" yazmak tekrar olur ve kelime limitini aşabilir.
The fourth section is an uninterrupted university lecture given by a single academic: glacial erosion, the navigation behaviour of bees, urban farming, the economics of a historical discovery. It is the hardest section because there is no reading break in the middle — you answer all 10 questions in one continuous flow; if you lose your place there is no pause to catch up.
It almost always contains note completion (and sometimes sentence completion); the notes mirror the logical structure of the lecture: heading → sub-heading → detail. The good news: the layout of the notes follows the order of the lecture, so you can track where you are. The difficulty is the academic vocabulary and the speaker's fast, signposted delivery.
Early beekeepers assumed the hive was led by a "king". It was only in the seventeenth century that microscopy revealed the central bee was in fact a queen, and that most of the workforce were sterile females. Drones, the males, had a single function: reproduction.
Notes: Central bee = a ________ (not a king) · Most workers = sterile ________ · Drones' role = ________
Answers: queen · females · reproduction. Careful: the question says "sterile ______"; only "females" goes in the gap, writing "sterile females" is a repetition and may exceed the word limit.
Completion soruları IELTS Listening'in belkemiğidir. Ortak kural: kayıttaki kelimeyi aynen yazarsınız (paraphrase etmezsiniz), ama bir kelime limiti vardır — "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER" gibi. Limit aşılırsa doğru kelimeyi bulmuş olsanız bile cevap yanlış sayılır.
| Alt tip | Nasıl görünür | Strateji | Tuzak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form completion | Kayıt formu (isim, tarih, fiyat) | Cevap türünü önceden tahmin et (isim mi, sayı mı) | Sözlü düzeltme / spelling |
| Note completion | Madde işaretli notlar | Başlık hiyerarşisiyle nerede olduğunu izle | Kelime limitini aşmak |
| Table completion | Satır/sütun ızgarası | Satırı soldan sağa oku; sütun başlığı cevabın türünü verir | Yanlış satıra yazmak |
| Flowchart completion | Aşama → aşama okları | Süreç kelimelerini dinle: then, after that, finally | Aşama sırasını kaçırmak |
| Sentence completion | Yarım cümleler | Boşluğun gramerini önceden çöz (isim mi fiil mi) | Cümleyi dilbilgisel bozmak |
— Our standard membership is £40 a month. If you pay annually, it drops to just £420 a year, and students get a further ten per cent off.
| Plan | Fiyat |
|---|---|
| Monthly | £40 |
| Annual | ________ |
Cevap: £420 (ya da 420 — para birimi tabloda zaten varsa sadece sayı). "Ten per cent off" bir distractor; soru yıllık ücreti soruyor, indirimli öğrenci fiyatını değil.
Completion questions are the backbone of IELTS Listening. The shared rule: you write the word from the recording exactly (you do not paraphrase), but there is a word limit — such as "NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER". If the limit is exceeded, the answer is marked wrong even if you found the right word.
| Sub-type | How it looks | Strategy | Trap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form completion | A registration form (name, date, price) | Predict the answer type in advance (name or number) | Spoken correction / spelling |
| Note completion | Bullet-pointed notes | Track your place with the heading hierarchy | Exceeding the word limit |
| Table completion | A row/column grid | Read the row left to right; the column heading gives the answer type | Writing in the wrong row |
| Flowchart completion | Stage → stage arrows | Listen for process words: then, after that, finally | Missing the order of the stages |
| Sentence completion | Half sentences | Work out the grammar of the gap in advance (noun or verb) | Making the sentence grammatically broken |
— Our standard membership is £40 a month. If you pay annually, it drops to just £420 a year, and students get a further ten per cent off.
| Plan | Price |
|---|---|
| Monthly | £40 |
| Annual | ________ |
Answer: £420 (or 420 — just the number if the currency is already in the table). "Ten per cent off" is a distractor; the question asks for the annual fee, not the discounted student price.
Multiple choice (çoktan seçmeli) genelde Section 2 ve 3'te çıkar. Üç seçenekten birini (bazen beşten ikisini) seçersiniz. Zorluğu şudur: doğru cevap kayıtta paraphrase edilir, yanlış seçenekler ise kayıtta geçen kelimelerle birebir görünür. Yani ekrandaki kelimeyi duyduğunuz için bir seçeneği işaretlemek tam da hazırlanan tuzaktır.
Question: Why did the student choose this topic?
A) a lecturer recommended it B) it links to her future career C) there was plenty of data
Transcript: "My tutor actually suggested a different subject, but I picked this one because it ties in with the kind of work I want to do after graduating."
Cevap: B. "Ties in with the work I want to do after graduating" = "future career" (paraphrase). A tuzaktır: "tutor suggested" duyulur ama farklı bir konu için ve reddedilir ("but I picked this one").
Matching soruları bir öğe listesini bir seçenek listesiyle eşleştirir (kişi → görüş, yer → özellik). Konuşma sırası genelde soru sırasını takip eder, ama seçenekler öyle değildir. Seçenek kutusunu (options box) önce oku ve her seçeneği bir-iki kelimeyle zihninde özetle ki duyduğunda tanıyabilesin.
Multiple choice usually appears in Sections 2 and 3. You choose one of three options (sometimes two of five). Its difficulty is this: the correct answer is paraphrased in the recording, while the wrong options appear word for word as they are in the recording. So marking an option because you heard the word on screen is exactly the trap that is set.
Question: Why did the student choose this topic?
A) a lecturer recommended it B) it links to her future career C) there was plenty of data
Transcript: "My tutor actually suggested a different subject, but I picked this one because it ties in with the kind of work I want to do after graduating."
Answer: B. "Ties in with the work I want to do after graduating" = "future career" (paraphrase). A is a trap: "tutor suggested" is heard but for a different topic, and it is rejected ("but I picked this one").
Matching questions match a list of items to a list of options (person → view, place → feature). The order of speaking usually follows the order of the questions, but the options do not. Read the options box first and summarise each option in one or two words in your mind so you can recognise it when you hear it.
Harita/kroki etiketleme genelde Section 2'de çıkar. Bir plan verilir (bina, kamp alanı, park, müze katı) ve konuşmacının anlatımına göre yerleri etiketlersiniz — ya harflerle (A–H) ya da kutulara isim yazarak. Kelime bilgisi değil, yönelim ve uzamsal takip becerisi ölçülür.

go straight ahead, turn left/right, take the second turning, follow the path, cross over, go past
halfway along, just before, right at the end, a short way down, immediately after
Map/plan labelling usually appears in Section 2. A plan is given (a building, campsite, park, museum floor) and you label the places according to the speaker's description — either with letters (A–H) or by writing names in boxes. It is not vocabulary that is measured but orientation and spatial tracking skill.

go straight ahead, turn left/right, take the second turning, follow the path, cross over, go past
halfway along, just before, right at the end, a short way down, immediately after
Transcript: "The main advantage of the new design is that it significantly reduces energy consumption without adding to the cost."
Soru: The new design's main benefit is a reduction in ________. (NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS)
Cevap: energy consumption. "In a reduction in ___" gramerine isim öbeği uyar; "reduces energy" yazmak (fiil) cümleyi bozardı.
In sentence completion you complete a half sentence with words from the recording; the sentence must be correct both in meaning and grammar. If you work out in advance what kind of word (noun, verb, adjective) the gap needs, you will catch the right moment far more easily.
In short answer questions you answer a short question with a few words from the recording (again with a word limit). In questions such as "List two reasons..." two separate items are required; you must catch both.
Transcript: "The main advantage of the new design is that it significantly reduces energy consumption without adding to the cost."
Question: The new design's main benefit is a reduction in ________. (NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS)
Answer: energy consumption. A noun phrase fits the grammar of "in a reduction in ___"; writing "reduces energy" (a verb) would break the sentence.
Soru: "The museum was founded in ________ by a local ________."
Tahmin: İlk boşluk "founded in ___" → bir yıl (sayı). İkinci boşluk "a local ___" → bir meslek/kişi (isim, tekil). Kayıtta "founded" veya eş anlamlısı "established/set up" duyunca kilitlen. Böylece "set up in 1888 by a local merchant" cümlesi geldiğinde "founded" kelimesini beklemesen bile paraphrase'i yakalarsın.
In IELTS Listening the most powerful weapon is that short gap given before the audio. Champion candidates do not waste those seconds; they read the questions and decide in advance what to expect for each gap. That way, while listening, the "searching" load is reduced and only "confirming" remains.
Before listening, also predict the synonym of each gap. IELTS almost never uses the same word: if the question says founded, in the recording you will hear set up or established. If you set up the sound you are expecting in advance, catching it becomes easier.
Question: "The museum was founded in ________ by a local ________."
Prediction: The first gap is "founded in ___" → a year (number). The second gap is "a local ___" → a profession/person (noun, singular). Lock in when you hear "founded" or its synonym "established/set up" in the recording. That way, when the sentence "set up in 1888 by a local merchant" comes, you catch the paraphrase even without expecting the word "founded".
IELTS Listening puanınızı düşürmek için bilinçli tuzaklar kurar. Bunları tanımak, cevabı bilmek kadar önemlidir. Üç ana tuzak vardır.
Konuşmacı bir şey söyler, sonra geri alır. Sinyal kelimeler: actually, sorry, no wait, I mean, on second thought, let me correct that, or rather. Doğru cevap sonra gelen bilgidir.
"We'll meet on Tuesday — actually, no, the room's booked then, let's make it Thursday." → Cevap: Thursday, Tuesday değil.
Kayıt birkaç sayı ya da isim art arda söyler; yalnızca biri soruyu cevaplar. "Reddetme" ipuçlarını dinle: not, isn't, instead of, rather than, we decided against.
"The trip was originally 30 people, but numbers dropped, so 18 finally came — not the 25 we'd hoped for." → Cevap: 18 (30 ve 25 distractor).
Doğru cevap sorudaki kelimenin eş anlamlısıyla gelir; sorudaki kelimenin birebir aynısı ise çoğu zaman yanlış seçeneğe konur.
Soru: "cheap" → Kayıt: "it won't cost you much", "affordable", "reasonably priced", "good value". Kayıtta "cheap" kelimesini beklemek seni yanıltır.
IELTS Listening sets deliberate traps to lower your score. Recognising them is as important as knowing the answer. There are three main traps.
The speaker says something, then takes it back. Signal words: actually, sorry, no wait, I mean, on second thought, let me correct that, or rather. The correct answer is the information that comes after.
"We'll meet on Tuesday — actually, no, the room's booked then, let's make it Thursday." → Answer: Thursday, not Tuesday.
The recording says several numbers or names in a row; only one answers the question. Listen for "rejection" cues: not, isn't, instead of, rather than, we decided against.
"The trip was originally 30 people, but numbers dropped, so 18 finally came — not the 25 we'd hoped for." → Answer: 18 (30 and 25 are distractors).
The correct answer comes as a synonym of the question word; the exact same word as in the question is usually placed in a wrong option.
Question: "cheap" → Recording: "it won't cost you much", "affordable", "reasonably priced", "good value". Expecting to hear the word "cheap" in the recording will mislead you.
IELTS Listening'de cevabı duymak işin yarısıdır; diğer yarısı doğru yazmaktır. Doğru kelimeyi duyup yanlış yazmak, hiç duymamakla aynı puandır. Türk adaylar en çok puanı burada — yazım ve formatta — kaybeder.
| Kural | Açıklama | Örnek hata → doğru |
|---|---|---|
| Yazım şart | Yanlış yazılan kelime yanlış sayılır (İngiliz/Amerikan yazım ikisi de kabul) | acommodation → accommodation |
| Çoğul -s | Kayıt çoğul söylüyorsa -s koymalısın; tekil-çoğul uyumu puanı belirler | two ticket → two tickets |
| Kelime limiti | "TWO WORDS" derse üç kelime yazma; fazla kelime cevabı iptal eder | a large wooden box → wooden box |
| Sayı formatı | Rakam ya da yazıyla — ikisi de olur; ama tutarlı ve okunur olsun | nineteen ninety → 1990 |
| Tarih | Standart tarih formatları kabul edilir | 3 March / 3rd March / March 3 |
| Büyük/küçük harf | Genelde ikisi de kabul, ama özel adları büyük harfle yaz — güvenli taraf | london → London |
| Birleşik/ayrı | Bileşik kelimeleri doğru yaz; "car park" iki kelime sayılır | carpark → car park |
In IELTS Listening, hearing the answer is half the job; the other half is writing it correctly. Hearing the right word and writing it wrong scores the same as not hearing it at all. Turkish candidates lose the most points here — in spelling and format.
| Rule | Explanation | Example error → correct |
|---|---|---|
| Spelling is essential | A misspelled word is marked wrong (both British/American spelling accepted) | acommodation → accommodation |
| Plural -s | If the recording says plural you must add -s; singular-plural agreement decides the point | two ticket → two tickets |
| Word limit | If it says "TWO WORDS", don't write three; extra words invalidate the answer | a large wooden box → wooden box |
| Number format | Digits or words — both fine; but be consistent and legible | nineteen ninety → 1990 |
| Date | Standard date formats are accepted | 3 March / 3rd March / March 3 |
| Upper/lower case | Usually both accepted, but write proper nouns with a capital — the safe side | london → London |
| Compound/separate | Write compound words correctly; "car park" counts as two words | carpark → car park |
IELTS kayıtları çeşitli aksanlar içerir: standart İngiliz, Avustralya, Yeni Zelanda, Kuzey Amerika ve bazen İskoç tonlaması. Daha önemlisi, konuşmacılar doğal, bağlı konuşma (connected speech) kullanır: kelimeler birbirine bağlanır, zayıf formlar yutulur, "t/d" sesleri düşer. Ders kitabındaki net telaffuzu bekleyen aday, gerçek kayıtta kaybolur.
| Olgu | Yazılı | Duyulan (yaklaşık) |
|---|---|---|
| Linking (bağlama) | an apple, pick it up | a-napple, pi-ki-tup |
| Weak forms (zayıf form) | a cup of tea, fish and chips | cuppa tea, fish'n chips |
| Elision (ses düşmesi) | next day, must be | nex day, mus be |
| Assimilation | ten minutes, good boy | tem minutes, gub boy |
Bu iki konu Listening başarısının gizli anahtarıdır; ayrıntılı çalışmak için Connected Speech ve Weak Forms sayfalarına bak.
IELTS recordings include various accents: standard British, Australian, New Zealand, North American and sometimes a Scottish intonation. More importantly, speakers use natural, connected speech: words link together, weak forms are swallowed, "t/d" sounds drop. A candidate who expects the clear pronunciation of a coursebook gets lost in the real recording.
| Phenomenon | Written | Heard (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| Linking | an apple, pick it up | a-napple, pi-ki-tup |
| Weak forms | a cup of tea, fish and chips | cuppa tea, fish'n chips |
| Elision (dropped sounds) | next day, must be | nex day, mus be |
| Assimilation | ten minutes, good boy | tem minutes, gub boy |
These two topics are the hidden key to Listening success; to study them in detail, see the Connected Speech and Weak Forms pages.
| Section 4'te | Kelime kalabalığında yolunu kaybeder | Not başlıklarıyla nerede olduğunu izler |
Kısaca: band 8 adayı aktif dinler — tahmin eder, doğrular, esnek kalır ve fire vermeden yazar. Band 6 adayı pasif dinler — sesin gelmesini bekler ve tek bir aksaklıkta zincirleme puan kaybeder. İyi haber: bu davranışlar strateji ve pratikle öğrenilir; doğuştan bir "kulak" gerekmez.
The difference between band 6 and band 8 is not just "better English"; it is a measurable difference in listening behaviour. On the same recording, two candidates do very different things.
| Situation | Band 6 approach | Band 8 approach |
|---|---|---|
| Before the audio | Reads the questions superficially, does not predict | Decides the gap type and keywords in advance |
| When a paraphrase comes | Expects the exact word, misses the synonym | Has imagined the synonym in advance, catches it at once |
| When the mind changes ("actually") | Sticks with the first answer heard | Waits for the correction, writes the final information |
| When one question is missed | Freezes, loses the next 2–3 questions too | Leaves the gap, moves ahead immediately |
| While writing | Makes spelling/plural errors | Checks spelling, plural, word limit |
| In Section 4 | Gets lost in the crowd of words | Tracks their place with the note headings |
In short: the band 8 candidate listens actively — predicting, confirming, staying flexible and writing without slips. The band 6 candidate listens passively — waiting for the sound to come and losing points in a chain from a single slip. The good news: these behaviours are learned through strategy and practice; you do not need an innate "ear".
Özet: Listening bir "İngilizce anlama" sınavı olduğu kadar bir disiplin ve strateji sınavıdır. Kolay bölümlerde sıfır fire, zor bölümlerde esnek dikkat, her boşlukta önceden tahmin ve yazarken titiz kontrol — bu dört alışkanlık band'inizi tek başına bir tam puan yukarı taşıyabilir. Şimdi bu stratejileri gerçek kayıtlarla, tek dinlemede, pratik ederek pekiştir.
Summary: Listening is as much a test of discipline and strategy as of "understanding English". Zero slips in the easy sections, flexible attention in the hard sections, prediction ahead of every gap, and careful checking while writing — these four habits alone can lift your band a full point. Now reinforce these strategies by practising with real recordings, on a single listen.
Yukarıdaki bölümlerde soru tiplerini ayrı ayrı açtık. Aşağıdaki tablo hepsini tek bir yerde toplar: her tipin hangi bölümde sık çıktığı, senden ne istediği ve en çok puan kaybettiren tuzağı. Sınav öncesi son tekrarda bu tabloyu tara — her satır bir refleks kazandırır.
| Soru tipi | Sık görüldüğü bölüm | Ne istenir | Ana tuzak |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form completion | Section 1 | Kayıttaki kelimeyi/sayıyı aynen forma yaz | Harf harf söylenen isimde yazım hatası; sözlü düzeltme |
| Note completion | Section 4 | Madde notlarındaki boşluğu doldur | Kelime limitini aşmak; başlık hiyerarşisinde yerini kaybetmek |
| Table completion | Section 1 / 2 | Izgaradaki hücreyi doldur | Yanlış satıra yazmak; sütun başlığının istediği türü kaçırmak |
| Flowchart completion | Section 3 | Süreç aşamasını doldur | Aşama sırasını (then / after that / finally) kaçırmak |
| Sentence completion | Section 2 / 4 | Yarım cümleyi kayıttaki kelimeyle tamamla | Cümleyi dilbilgisel bozmak (isim gerekirken fiil yazmak) |
| Multiple choice | Section 2 / 3 | Seçeneklerden doğruyu işaretle | Doğru cevap paraphrase; ekrandaki kelimeyi duyup yanlış seçeneği işaretlemek |
| Matching | Section 3 | Öğeyi seçenek kutusuyla eşleştir | Fikir sahibini karıştırmak; seçenekleri önceden okumamak |
| Map / plan labelling | Section 2 | Plandaki yerleri harf/isimle etiketle | Kendi sağ/solunla planın yönünü karıştırmak; ara etiketi kaçırıp donmak |
| Short answer | Section 1 / 4 | Kısa soruya birkaç kelimeyle cevap ver | "List two..." derken tek öğe yazmak; kelime limitini aşmak |
Dikkat edilecek ortak nokta: completion ailesinde kayıttaki kelimeyi aynen yazarsın (paraphrase yok, kelime limiti var); multiple choice / matching ailesinde ise doğru cevap neredeyse her zaman paraphrase edilir ve sorudaki kelimenin birebir aynısı tuzaktır. Yani bir grupta "duyduğunu yaz", diğerinde "duyduğun kelimeye güvenme". Bu ayrımı içselleştirmek tek başına birçok fireyi keser.
In the sections above we opened up the question types one by one. The table below gathers them all in one place: which section each type appears in most often, what it asks of you, and the trap that loses the most points. In your final review before the exam, scan this table — each row builds a reflex.
| Question type | Section it appears in most | What is required | Main trap |
|---|---|---|---|
| Form completion | Section 1 | Write the word/number from the recording exactly onto the form | Spelling error in a name spelled out; a spoken correction |
| Note completion | Section 4 | Fill the gap in bullet notes | Exceeding the word limit; losing your place in the heading hierarchy |
| Table completion | Section 1 / 2 | Fill the cell in the grid | Writing in the wrong row; missing the type the column heading requires |
| Flowchart completion | Section 3 | Fill the process stage | Missing the order of stages (then / after that / finally) |
| Sentence completion | Section 2 / 4 | Complete the half sentence with the recording's word | Breaking the grammar (writing a verb where a noun is needed) |
| Multiple choice | Section 2 / 3 | Mark the correct option | The correct answer is paraphrased; hearing the on-screen word and marking the wrong option |
| Matching | Section 3 | Match the item to the options box | Confusing the owner of the idea; not reading the options in advance |
| Map / plan labelling | Section 2 | Label places on the plan with a letter/name | Confusing your own left/right with the plan's direction; freezing after missing an intermediate label |
| Short answer | Section 1 / 4 | Answer a short question in a few words | Writing one item when it says "List two..."; exceeding the word limit |
The common point to note: in the completion family you write the recording's word exactly (no paraphrase, there is a word limit); in the multiple choice / matching family the correct answer is almost always paraphrased and the exact same word as in the question is the trap. So in one group it is "write what you hear", in the other "don't trust the word you hear". Internalising this distinction alone cuts many slips.
Şimdi öğrendiğimiz her şeyi tek bir küçük senaryoda birleştirelim: kısa bir Section 1 diyaloğu, üç boşluk ve her cevabın neden o olduğunun adım adım gerekçesi. Talimat: NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER.
— Good afternoon, I'd like to join the library.
— Certainly. Could I take your surname?
— Yes, it's Okonkwo. That's O-K-O-N-K-W-O.
— Thank you. And your address?
— It's 12 Maple Court — sorry, no, Maple Close, not Court.
— Got it. Which membership would you like?
— The premium one, please. I like that it lets me borrow up to eight books at a time.
| Library membership form | Cevap |
|---|---|
| Surname: ________ (1) | Okonkwo |
| Street: 12 Maple ________ (2) | Close |
| Books allowed at once: ________ (3) | eight (ya da 8) |
Ders: Üç boşluğun üçü de "anlama"yla değil doğru davranışla kazanılır — harfleri tam kopyala, düzeltmeyi bekle, kelime limitini aşma. Section 1'in kolaylığı tam da buradadır: içerik basit, fire ise küçük dikkatsizliklerden gelir. Bu üç refleksi otomatikleştirirsen bu bölümden 10/10 çıkmak gerçekçi bir hedeftir.
Now let's combine everything we have learned in one small scenario: a short Section 1 dialogue, three gaps and a step-by-step reason for why each answer is what it is. Instruction: NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS AND/OR A NUMBER.
— Good afternoon, I'd like to join the library.
— Certainly. Could I take your surname?
— Yes, it's Okonkwo. That's O-K-O-N-K-W-O.

| Library membership form | Answer |
|---|---|
| Surname: ________ (1) | Okonkwo |
| Street: 12 Maple ________ (2) | Close |
| Books allowed at once: ________ (3) | eight (or 8) |
Lesson: All three gaps are won not by "understanding" but by correct behaviour — copy the letters exactly, wait for the correction, do not exceed the word limit. This is exactly where the ease of Section 1 lies: the content is simple, and the losses come from small slips. If you automate these three reflexes, coming out of this section with 10/10 is a realistic goal.
