Bir metni tek tek doğru cümlelerden ibaret sanmak, en yaygın yanılgıdır. Her cümlesi dilbilgisel olarak kusursuz bir paragraf yine de okuyucuyu kaybedebilir; çünkü cümleler birbirine bağlanmıyor ya da fikirler mantıklı bir sırayla akmıyor olabilir. İşte bu iki farklı boyutu iki farklı terim adlandırır: bağdaşıklık (cohesion) ve tutarlılık (coherence).
Bağdaşıklık, metnin yüzeyindeki görünür bağlardır: however, therefore gibi bağlayıcılar; it, this, these, such gibi geri-gönderim sözcükleri; bir kelimeyi tekrar etmek yerine eşanlamlısını ya da genel terimini kullanmak (the government → the administration → it).
Yüzeydeki görünür bağlar: however, this, such, sözcük zinciri. "Cümleler birbirini tutuyor."
Coherence · tutarlılık
Fikirlerin görünmez, mantıklı akışı. "Metnin su gibi akması."
Neden zor?
Thinking a text is nothing more than a series of individually correct sentences is the most common misconception. A paragraph in which every sentence is grammatically perfect can still lose the reader, because the sentences may fail to connect to one another or the ideas may fail to flow in a logical order. These two different dimensions are named by two different terms: cohesion and coherence.
Cohesion is the visible links on the surface of the text: connectors such as however, therefore; back-reference words such as it, this, these, such; using a synonym or a general term instead of repeating a word (the government → the administration → it). These are the threads that stitch the sentences together.
Coherence, on the other hand, is deeper and usually invisible: it is the ideas forming a logical, followable order in the reader's mind. In a coherent text each sentence arises naturally from the one before; the reader never asks "why is this being said now?". Coherence is possible even without cohesive devices, but in academic writing the two work together.
Cohesion
Visible links on the surface: however, this, such, lexical chain. "The sentences hold together."
Coherence
The invisible, logical flow of ideas. "The text flowing like water."
Why is it hard? Because a student who thinks in Turkish usually builds each sentence separately and correctly but neglects the bridges between sentences. Moreover, connector use and information ordering in Turkish differ from English; a word-for-word translation often produces a disjointed or over-linked text. IELTS/TOEFL assessors measure exactly this flow: in IELTS Writing one of the four bands is directly Coherence and Cohesion.
- this/these/such gibi gönderim sözcüklerini yalnız bırakma; ardına özetleyen bir isim ekle: this problem, these findings, such measures.
- Aynı kelimeyi tekrar tekrar kullanma; eşanlamlı, üst-terim veya zamirle bir sözcük zinciri (lexical chain) kur.
- Bilgiyi bilinen → yeni (given-new) sırasıyla ver: cümleye tanıdık bilgiyle başla, yeni bilgiyi sona koy. Akış böyle doğar.
- Aşırı-bağlayıcı (her cümlede furthermore, moreover, however) yazmak, zayıf-bağlayıcı kadar kötüdür; doğallık esastır.
- IELTS/TOEFL'da paragraf yapısı ve akış puanın belirleyicisidir; bkz. Paragraf Yapısı ve Yönlendirme Dili.
- Bağdaşıklık araçları çok çeşitlidir; hepsini bir arada tıkıştırmak değil, doğru yerde doğru olanı seçmek ustalıktır.
Aşırı-bağlayıcı (her cümlede furthermore, however) yazmak, zayıf-bağlayıcı kadar kötüdür. Ayrıca bağlayıcılar iki bağımsız cümleyi tek başına birleştiremez: araya nokta ya da noktalı virgül girer.
Bilgiyi bilinen → yeni sırasıyla ver: cümleye tanıdık bilgiyle başla, yeni bilgiyi sona koy. Akış böyle doğar.
- Cohesion = the language links on the surface (connectors, reference, lexical chain). Coherence = the logical flow of ideas.
- The two are separate: a text can be cohesive but incoherent, or coherent but weakly cohesive.
- Connectors (however, therefore, moreover) are usually set off with a comma at the start of a sentence; they do not join two independent clauses (a semicolon or a full stop is needed for that).
- Do not leave reference words such as this/these/such alone; add a summarising noun after them: this problem, these findings, such measures.
- Do not use the same word again and again; build a lexical chain with a synonym, superordinate term or pronoun.
- Present information in given → new order: begin the sentence with familiar information and put the new information at the end. That is how flow arises.
- Over-linking (furthermore, moreover, however in every sentence) is as bad as under-linking; naturalness is essential.
- In IELTS/TOEFL, paragraph structure and flow are decisive for the score; see Paragraph Structure and Signposting Language.
- Cohesive devices are very varied; mastery is not cramming them all together but choosing the right one in the right place.
Over-linking (furthermore, however in every sentence) is as bad as under-linking. Also, connectors cannot join two independent clauses on their own: a full stop or a semicolon comes between them.
Present information in given → new order: begin the sentence with familiar information and put the new information at the end. That is how flow arises.
Bağdaşıklık tek bir kalıba indirgenemez; birkaç farklı mekanizmayla kurulur. Aşağıda dört ana araç ailesini, kuruluşlarını ve doğru noktalamayı görüyoruz. Amaç, bir cümleyi bir öncekine görünür ya da görünmez bir iplikle bağlamaktır.
Bağlayıcı
however, therefore + virgül
Gönderim
this, these, such + özetleyen isim
Sözcük zinciri
eşanlamlı · üst-terim · zamir
1) Bağlayıcılarla (cümle-bağlayıcı zarflar)
Formül: [Cümle 1]. Bağlayıcı, [Cümle 2]. — Bu zarflar (however, therefore, moreover, in contrast) genellikle ikinci cümlenin başında yer alır ve virgülle ayrılır. Dikkat: iki bağımsız cümleyi tek başına birleştiremezler; araya nokta ya da noktalı virgül girmelidir.
2) Gönderimle (it / this / these / such)
Formül: [Fikir/İsim]. this/these/such + (özetleyen isim) ...
|---|---|---|
| Zıt fikir eklemek | however / nevertheless / that said | ..., however, ... |
| Sonuç bildirmek | therefore / consequently / thus | ...; therefore, ... |
| Aynı yönde eklemek | moreover / furthermore / in addition | ..., moreover, ... |
| Önceki fikre gönderme | this/these/such + isim | This finding ... |
| Tekrarı önlemek | eşanlamlı / üst-terim / one | the vehicle ... it |
Cohesion cannot be reduced to a single pattern; it is built through several different mechanisms. Below we see the four main device families, how they are built and their correct punctuation. The aim is to tie a sentence to the previous one with a visible or invisible thread.
Connector
however, therefore + comma
Reference
this, these, such + summarising noun
Lexical chain
synonym · superordinate · pronoun
1) With connectors (conjunctive adverbs)
Formula: [Sentence 1]. Connector, [Sentence 2]. — These adverbs (however, therefore, moreover, in contrast) usually stand at the start of the second sentence and are set off with a comma. Note: they cannot join two independent clauses on their own; a full stop or a semicolon must come between them.
2) With reference (it / this / these / such)
Formula: [Idea/Noun]. this/these/such + (summarising noun) ... — You refer back to the whole of the previous sentence or to one of its elements. Leaving this alone often creates ambiguity; adding a noun that summarises the topic after it is the academic standard.
3) With a lexical chain (repetition / synonym / superordinate)
Formula: key word → synonym/superordinate → pronoun. — You spread the same concept across the text without drilling in the same word repeatedly. This both avoids repetition and signals to the reader 'we are still on the same topic'.
4) With substitution and ellipsis
| Aim | Device | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Add an opposing idea | however / nevertheless / that said | ..., however, ... |
| State a result | therefore / consequently / thus | ...; therefore, ... |
| Add in the same direction | moreover / furthermore / in addition | ..., moreover, ... |
| Refer to a previous idea | this/these/such + noun | This finding ... |
| Avoid repetition | synonym / superordinate / one | the vehicle ... it |
Bağdaşıklık ve tutarlılık, mantıksal ilişki türüne göre farklı araçlar çağırır. En yaygından özele doğru başlıca kullanım alanları şunlardır.
Ekleme (aynı yönde bilgi eklemek)
Karşıtlık (zıt ya da beklenmedik bilgi)
Neden-sonuç
Örnekleme ve açımlama
Gönderimle sürekliliği koruma (referencing)
Cohesion and coherence call on different devices according to the type of logical relation. From the most common to the more specialised, the main use cases are as follows.
Addition (adding information in the same direction)
Contrast (opposing or unexpected information)
Cause and effect
Exemplifying and paraphrasing
Maintaining continuity through reference (referencing)
Bağdaşıklık araçlarını, işaretledikleri mantıksal ilişkiye göre gruplamak, doğru olanı hızla seçmenizi sağlar. Aşağıdaki tablo bir 'başvuru haritası'dır.

| Cause-effect | therefore, consequently, thus, hence, as a result | so, as a result, consequently |
| Exemplifying | for example, for instance, namely, such as | for example, namely, like |
| Restatement | in other words, that is, to put it simply | in other words, that is |
| Sequencing | first, subsequently, finally, having done X | first, then, finally |
| Emphasis/summary | in short, overall, on the whole, to sum up | in short, in general, to sum up |
At an advanced level the real difference emerges not in which connector you know, but in when you do not use a connector. The master writer most often builds the link through the arrangement of the information itself.
The given-new principle: In English, a sentence flows naturally when it begins with information the reader already knows and leaves the new information to the end. That is why the subject of the next sentence usually takes the 'new' information at the end of the previous sentence as 'given'.
Certainty and distance: therefore implies a strong logical necessity; this suggests or this may indicate is a more cautious result link. In academic writing you tune the strength of your claim with this choice.
Turkish usually builds its links with a suffix ("-dığı için", "-e rağmen", "-ıp") or with a single word ("ancak", "dolayısıyla") and gathers them toward the end of the sentence. English, by contrast, most often marks these links with a separate sentence adverb at the start of the sentence. This structural difference leads to three typical errors in word-for-word translation.
- In Turkish a single comma can chain many clauses; in English this is a 'comma splice' error (two independent clauses cannot be joined with a comma).
- In Turkish the pronoun 'bu' can refer to many things on its own; in English academic writing this is usually supported by a noun (this problem).
- In Turkish repeating the same word may seem natural; in English repetition is regarded as a sign of 'poverty', and a lexical chain is expected.
Bağdaşıklık, komşu birkaç kavramla sık karıştırılır. Aşağıdaki tablo sınırları netleştirir; ilgili konulara çapraz-linkle geçebilirsiniz.
| Kavram | Ne yapar | Farkı |
|---|---|---|
| Cohesion (bağdaşıklık) | Cümleleri yüzeyde bağlar | 'Nasıl bağlandığı' — görünür dil araçları |
| Coherence (tutarlılık) | Fikirleri mantıken düzenler | 'Neden anlamlı aktığı' — derin mantık |
| Signposting (yönlendirme) | Okuyucuya haritayı gösterir | Metnin bütününü yönetir; bkz. Yönlendirme Dili |
| Paragraph structure | Fikirleri paragraflara böler | Bağların çalıştığı çerçeve; bkz. Paragraf Yapısı |
| Nominalization | Eylemi isme çevirir | Bir bağdaşıklık aracı üretir (this decline); bkz. Nominalizasyon |
Cohesion is often confused with a few neighbouring concepts. The table below clarifies the boundaries; you can jump to the related topics via the cross-links.
| Concept | What it does | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| Cohesion | Links sentences on the surface | 'How it is linked' — visible language devices |
| Coherence | Orders ideas logically | 'Why it flows meaningfully' — deep logic |
| Signposting | Shows the reader the map | Manages the whole text; see Signposting Language |
| Paragraph structure | Divides ideas into paragraphs | The frame in which the links work; see Paragraph Structure |
| Nominalization | Turns an action into a noun | Produces a cohesive device (this decline); see Nominalization |
Bağdaşıklık kuralları katı değildir; usta yazar bazılarını bilinçli olarak esnetir. İşte meşru istisnalar.
- Bilinçli tekrar (rhetorical repetition): Vurgu için bir kelimeyi kasten tekrarlamak zayıflık değil, güçtür. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds... gibi.
- Bağlayıcısız akış: Çok iyi bir bilgi dizilişi (given-new), hiç bağlayıcı olmadan da tam tutarlılık üretebilir. Her cümleye bağlayıcı şart değildir.
- Cümle başında And/But: Modern akademik ve gazete İngilizcesinde cümleye And ya da But ile başlamak artık kabul görür; vurgu ve ritim katar. Aşırıya kaçmayın.
The rules of cohesion are not rigid; the master writer deliberately bends some of them. Here are the legitimate exceptions.
- Rhetorical repetition: Deliberately repeating a word for emphasis is not weakness but strength. As in We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing grounds...
- Connector-free flow: A very good arrangement of information (given-new) can produce full coherence even without any connectors. A connector in every sentence is not obligatory.
- And/But at the start of a sentence: In modern academic and journalistic English, starting a sentence with And or But is now accepted; it adds emphasis and rhythm. Do not overdo it.
Konuşmada bağdaşıklık daha gevşek ve farklı araçlarla kurulur: anyway, so, well, you know, the thing is gibi 'söylem işaretleyicileri' (discourse markers) yön verir. Bunlar yazıda değil, konuşmada doğaldır.
In speech, cohesion is built more loosely and with different tools: 'discourse markers' such as anyway, so, well, you know, the thing is give direction. These are natural in speech, not in writing.
Akademik yazıda bağdaşıklık, süsleme değil argümanın iskeletidir. İyi bir akademik paragraf, önceki cümlenin fikrini isimleştirip (nominalization) sonraki cümlenin öznesi yapar; böylece hem bağ hem ilerleme sağlanır. Bu teknik için bkz. Nominalizasyon.
- Those studies (2. cümle) önceki cümlenin 'early studies'ine gönderim yapar — given-new.
- Such a view önceki cümlenin tümünü tek isme paketler (özetleyen gönderim).
- This unevenness — bir önceki cümledeki eşitsizlik fikrini isimleştirip özne yapar (nominalization + cohesion).
- therefore yalnızca bir kez, gerçek bir sonuç noktasında kullanılmış — aşırı-bağlayıcı değil.
- Once framed this way — bağlayıcı yerine bir yapı (ellipsis'li zaman cümleciği) ile bağ kuruyor.
- Tema-rem zinciri: her cümlenin sonu (yeni bilgi) bir sonrakinin başına (bilinen bilgi) taşınıyor — akış budur.
In academic writing cohesion is not ornament but the skeleton of the argument. A good academic paragraph nominalizes the idea of the previous sentence (nominalization) and makes it the subject of the next; this provides both link and progression. For this technique see Nominalization.
- Those studies (2nd sentence) refers back to 'early studies' in the previous sentence — given-new.
- Such a view packs the whole of the previous sentence into a single noun (summarising reference).
- This unevenness — nominalizes the idea of inequality from the previous sentence and makes it the subject (nominalization + cohesion).
- therefore is used only once, at a genuine point of result — not over-linking.
- Once framed this way — builds the link with a structure (a time clause with ellipsis) instead of a connector.
- Theme-rheme chain: the end of each sentence (new information) is carried to the start of the next (known information) — that is flow.
- This focus (2. cümle): önceki cümlenin 'focus on words' fikrini isimleştirip özne yapar — nominalization + given-new.
- Such a paragraph: bir önceki uzun tarifi tek isme paketleyen özetleyen gönderim.
- First / Second / Third: burada meşru bir sıralama; dört farklı aracı listelediği için mekanik değil işlevsel.
- it, this, or these ve a synonym or a broader label: metin kendi anlattığı araçları aynı anda uyguluyor (kendine-göndergesel/örnekleyici).
- Overused, however, they clutter...: aynı paragrafta hem karşıtlık bağlayıcısı hem de 'aşırı kullanma' uyarısı — denge temasını pekiştirir.
- The lesson, then, is one of balance: then ile önceki tüm argümanı bir sonuca bağlar (özet-gönderim).
- Son cümledeki the effort... was entirely the writer's: baştaki 'effortless' ile kapanışta halka kurar — retorik tutarlılık.
- This focus (2nd sentence): nominalizes the 'focus on words' idea of the previous sentence and makes it the subject — nominalization + given-new.
- Such a paragraph: a summarising reference that packs the previous long description into a single noun.
- First / Second / Third: a legitimate sequence here; because it lists four different tools it is functional, not mechanical.
- it, this, or these and a synonym or a broader label: the text applies the very tools it describes at the same time (self-referential/illustrative).
- Overused, however, they clutter...: in the same paragraph, both a contrast connector and a warning about 'overuse' — it reinforces the theme of balance.
- The lesson, then, is one of balance: with then it ties the whole previous argument to a conclusion (summarising reference).
- In the final sentence, the effort... was entirely the writer's: it forms a loop with 'effortless' at the beginning in the closing — rhetorical coherence.

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı değil, kavrayışı ölçer. Yanıtlamadan önce bir an düşünün.
- Bir metin bağdaşık (cohesive) ama tutarsız (incoherent) olabilir mi? Bir örnek mantığıyla açıkla.Evet. Bol however/therefore serpiştirilmiş ama fikirleri mantıksız sıralanmış bir metin, yüzeyde bağlıdır ama akmaz. Bağdaşıklık araç, tutarlılık sonuçtur.
- Neden 'This is a problem.' yerine 'This measure is a problem.' akademik yazıda tercih edilir?Çünkü çıplak this belirsizdir; tam olarak neye gönderdiği okuyucuya bırakılır. Ardına özetleyen bir isim (this measure) eklemek gönderimi netleştirir.
The questions below measure not the rule but understanding. Take a moment to think before answering.
- Can a text be cohesive but incoherent? Explain with the logic of an example.Yes. A text sprinkled with plenty of however/therefore but with its ideas ordered illogically is linked on the surface yet does not flow. Cohesion is the tool, coherence is the result.
- Why is 'This measure is a problem.' preferred over 'This is a problem.' in academic writing?Because a bare this is ambiguous; exactly what it refers to is left to the reader. Adding a summarising noun after it (this measure) clarifies the reference.
- How does the 'given-new' principle build flow? When a sentence begins with familiar information and puts the new information at the end, the next sentence takes that new information as given and carries it to the front; so the sentences interlock like a chain.
- Why is it not a good idea to put a connector in every sentence? An over-linked text feels mechanical and tiring; points are lost for it in the exam. Good writing builds most of the links invisibly, through reference and lexical chains.

Görev: Aşağıdaki konuda tek paragraflık (6-8 cümle) akademik bir metin yazın: "Uzaktan çalışmanın şehir merkezleri üzerindeki etkisi." Amaç, en az üç farklı bağdaşıklık aracını doğal biçimde kullanmaktır.
- Rehber soru 1: İlk cümlenizden sonra, ikinci cümlenin öznesi ilk cümledeki 'yeni' bilgiyi bilinen olarak alıyor mu? (given-new)
- Rehber soru 2: Aynı anahtar kelimeyi (ör. 'workers') tekrar etmek yerine bir sözcük zinciri (employees → they → this workforce) kurdunuz mu?
- Rehber soru 3: En az bir kez bir eylemi isimleştirip (this shift, this decline) sonraki cümlenin öznesi yaptınız mı? Bkz. Nominalizasyon.
- Rehber soru 4: Bağlayıcıları (however, therefore) yalnızca gerçek ilişki gerektiğinde mi kullandınız — yoksa her cümleye mi serptiniz?
- Örnek cevap görRemote work has emptied many city-centre offices. This shift, though welcomed by employees, has hit local businesses hard. Cafés and shops that once relied on office crowds now face falling revenue; as a result, some have closed. The lost footfall, however, may prove temporary. As firms adopt hybrid models, workers are drifting back on selected days, and this partial return is slowly reviving the streets. Whether it will fully restore the old vitality remains uncertain. (Analiz: emptied→this shift ve revenue/footfall→this partial return isimleştirmeleri; offices→businesses→cafés and shops→the streets sözcük zinciri; however/as a result yalnızca gerçek ilişki noktalarında.)
Task: Write a single-paragraph (6-8 sentences) academic text on the following topic: "The effect of remote work on city centres." The aim is to use at least three different cohesive devices naturally.
- Guiding question 1: After your first sentence, does the subject of the second sentence take the 'new' information from the first sentence as given? (given-new)
- Guiding question 2: Instead of repeating the same key word (e.g. 'workers'), have you built a lexical chain (employees → they → this workforce)?
- Guiding question 3: Have you at least once nominalized an action (this shift, this decline) and made it the subject of the next sentence? See Nominalization.
- Guiding question 4: Did you use connectors (however, therefore) only when a real relation required it — or did you sprinkle them into every sentence?
- See sample answerRemote work has emptied many city-centre offices. (Analysis: the nominalizations emptied→this shift and revenue/footfall→this partial return; the lexical chain offices→businesses→cafés and shops→the streets; however/as a result only at genuine relation points.)
Kavram kontrolü için etkili bir soru: 'Bu paragrafta hiç however/therefore yok — yine de akıyor mu? Neden?' Bu, öğrenciyi bağlayıcı-bağımlılığından kurtarır ve given-new ilkesine yönlendirir. Ardından ters yönde: aşırı-bağlayıcı bir metin verip 'fazlalık olanları sil' dedirtin.
- Etkinlik 1 (eşleştirme): Karışık cümleleri tutarlı bir paragrafa sıralatın (bkz. 20. bölümdeki sıralama alıştırması). Given-new zincirini birlikte izleyin.
- Etkinlik 2 (silme): Aşırı-bağlayıcı bir paragraftan gereksiz bağlayıcıları sildirtin; hangilerinin gerçekten gerektiğini tartışın.
- Etkinlik 3 (isimleştirme köprüsü): İki kopuk cümle verin ('X happened. This mattered.') ve öğrenciden ikinci cümlenin öznesini isimleştirilmiş bir gönderimle güçlendirmesini isteyin ('This change mattered because...'). Bkz. Nominalizasyon.
- Değerlendirme: IELTS Writing kriterindeki Coherence and Cohesion bandını gösterin; öğrenci kendi metnini bu bantla puanlasın. Bkz. Paragraf Yapısı ve Yönlendirme Dili.
An effective question for concept checking: 'There is no however/therefore at all in this paragraph — does it still flow? Why?' This frees the student from connector-dependence and directs them to the given-new principle. Then in the opposite direction: give an over-linked text and have them 'delete the redundant ones'.
- Activity 1 (matching): Have them order scrambled sentences into a coherent paragraph (see the ordering exercise in section 20). Trace the given-new chain together.
- Activity 2 (deletion): Have them delete the unnecessary connectors from an over-linked paragraph; discuss which ones are genuinely needed.
- Activity 3 (nominalization bridge): Give two disjointed sentences ('X happened. This mattered.') and ask the student to strengthen the subject of the second sentence with a nominalized reference ('This change mattered because...'). See Nominalization.
- Assessment: Show the Coherence and Cohesion band of the IELTS Writing criteria; let the student score their own text against this band. See Paragraph Structure and Signposting Language.
- Cohesion yüzeydeki dil bağlarıdır; coherence fikirlerin mantıklı akışıdır. İkisi ayrı ama akademik yazıda birlikte gerekir.
- Dört ana bağdaşıklık aracı: bağlayıcılar, gönderim (this/these/such), sözcük zinciri (eşanlamlı/üst-terim), yerine-koyma/eksilti.
- Bağlayıcı zarflar (however, therefore) iki bağımsız cümleyi virgülle birleştiremez — nokta ya da noktalı virgül gerekir (comma splice'tan kaçının).
- Çıplak this yerine this + özetleyen isim kullanın; belirsizliği bu giderir.
- Aynı kelimeyi tekrar etmeyin; sözcük zinciriyle konuyu canlı tutun.
- Given-new (bilinen-yeni) diziliş, hiç bağlayıcı olmadan bile akış üretir — akışın asıl motorudur.
- Aşırı-bağlayıcı yazmak, zayıf-bağlayıcı kadar zararlıdır; denge esastır.
- İleri düzeyde en zarif bağ çoğu zaman bir bağlayıcı değil bir yapıdır (Having done X, ...) ya da bir isimleştirmedir (this decline); bkz. Nominalizasyon.
- IELTS/TOEFL akışı doğrudan puanlar; yapıyı Paragraf Yapısı ile kurun, yolu Yönlendirme Dili ile gösterin.
- Cohesion is the language links on the surface; coherence is the logical flow of ideas. The two are separate but both are needed in academic writing.
- The four main cohesive devices: connectors, reference (this/these/such), lexical chain (synonym/superordinate), substitution/ellipsis.
- Connective adverbs (however, therefore) cannot join two independent clauses with a comma — a full stop or a semicolon is needed (avoid the comma splice).
- Use this + summarising noun instead of a bare this; this removes the ambiguity.
- Do not repeat the same word; keep the topic alive with a lexical chain.
- Given-new ordering produces flow even without any connector — it is the true engine of flow.
- Over-linking is as harmful as under-linking; balance is essential.
- At an advanced level the most elegant link is often not a connector but a structure (Having done X, ...) or a nominalization (this decline); see Nominalization.
- IELTS/TOEFL score flow directly; build the structure with Paragraph Structure and show the way with Signposting Language.
