TYT
Temel Yeterlilik Testi — YKS'nin 1. oturumu.
AYT
Alan Yeterlilik Testi — 2. oturum. Sayısal, sözel ve eşit ağırlık alanlarına yönelik dersleri ölçer; hedeflenen bölüm türüne göre girilir.
YDT
| Oturum | YKS 3. oturum (YDT) |
| Sıklık | Yılda 1 kez (YKS döneminde, genellikle Haziran) |
5dil seçeneği
3.YKS oturumu (YDT)
- Hata analizi: Yanlışları not alıp neden yanlış yaptığınızı çözümlemek, aynı hataları tekrarlamamanın en etkili yoludur.

The YDT, or Foreign Language Test, is a special session of Turkey's university entrance exam (YKS) designed for candidates aiming for foreign-language departments. Faced by everyone who wants to be placed in departments that teach in languages such as English, German or French, this test is built on a different logic from the standard TYT and AYT sessions. In this guide we cover, step by step, what the YDT is, what it is used for, how the exam is structured and what kind of preparation it requires.
What Is the YDT?
YDT stands for Yabancı Dil Testi (Foreign Language Test) and is one of the three sessions of the Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS). The YKS consists of the TYT (Basic Proficiency Test) as the first session, the AYT (Field Proficiency Test) as the second session, and the YDT as the third session. All of these exams are administered by the Measuring, Selection and Placement Center, that is, ÖSYM.
TYT
Basic Proficiency Test — the 1st session of the YKS. It measures core subjects such as Turkish, mathematics, social sciences and natural sciences; every candidate takes it.
AYT
Field Proficiency Test — the 2nd session. It measures subjects aimed at the quantitative, verbal and equal-weight fields; you take it according to the type of department you are aiming for.
YDT
Foreign Language Test — the 3rd session. It focuses on a single foreign language; only candidates targeting a language department take it.
The YDT, as its name clearly indicates, is a test aimed solely at measuring a foreign language. While the TYT measures core subjects such as Turkish, mathematics, social sciences and natural sciences, and the AYT measures subjects for the quantitative, verbal and equal-weight fields, the YDT focuses entirely on a single foreign language. A candidate chooses which language they will take the exam in during the application, and they encounter questions in that language.
An important point is this: taking the YDT is not mandatory. Only candidates targeting foreign-language departments (such as English Language Teaching, Translation and Interpreting, or English Language and Literature) attend this session. The YDT is not required for students who want quantitative, verbal or equal-weight departments; for them, the TYT and AYT are enough.
The YDT is the third and final session of the YKS. It usually falls at the end of the YKS process, in June, and is held only once a year. Since the exact exam dates can change each year, you should follow the YKS guide published by ÖSYM for up-to-date information.
What Is the YDT For?
The main purpose of the YDT is to allow candidates to obtain a DİL (Language) score. Universities use the DİL score type when admitting students to their foreign-language departments. In other words, if a candidate wants to be placed in a department such as English Language Teaching or German Translation and Interpreting, their DİL score needs to be high, and to produce this score, taking the YDT is essential.
To put it another way, the YDT is like the key to the door. No matter how good your foreign language is, without taking this session and producing a sufficient DİL score, you have no chance of being placed in the relevant departments. For this reason, for students targeting a language department, the YDT is one of the most critical pillars of the entire YKS preparation.
Don't MissNo DİL score is produced without taking the YDT. No matter how good your English is, without attending this session you cannot be placed in language departments — the YDT is a non-negotiable step for anyone aiming at a language department.
If you are curious about how the DİL score is calculated and which net score corresponds to which score, you can take a look at our YDT score calculation guide, where we cover the topic in more detail. There you will find, with examples, the logic of how TYT and YDT net scores turn into a score.
Which Languages Is the YDT Offered In?
ÖSYM does not limit the YDT to a single language. Candidates can choose the foreign language they want to take the exam in during the application. The YDT is generally offered in the following five languages:
- English: The most common YDT language, preferred by the vast majority of candidates. In terms of quotas and the variety of departments, the broadest option is in English.
- German: The second most common language, taken by those targeting departments such as German Language Teaching and Translation and Interpreting.
- French: Preferred for departments such as French Language and Literature and French Language Teaching.
- Arabic: Candidates aiming for departments related to Arabic Language and Literature choose this language.
- Russian: Aimed at candidates taking the exam for departments such as Russian Language and Literature.
It is important to remember that each candidate can take the YDT in only a single language. The language chosen when applying to the exam is valid for that year. For this reason, clarifying in advance which language your target department teaches in is of great importance.
YDT Exam Structure: How Many Questions, and How?
The YDT is a test administered in a single session and focused on a single foreign language. The general structure of the exam is as follows:
| Feature | Detail |
| Total number of questions | 80 questions |
| Question type | Multiple choice, 5 options |
| Language | The single chosen foreign language (English, German, French, Arabic, Russian) |
| Session | YKS 3rd session (YDT) |
| Frequency | Once a year (during the YKS period, usually June) |
5language options
3rdYKS session (YDT)
1 a yearsingle administration
5 optionsmultiple choice
There are a total of 80 questions in the exam, and each question has five options. That is, each question has five choices — A, B, C, D and E — and only one of them is the correct answer. The exam duration and session times are announced by ÖSYM in the guide each year; for these details, you should always consult the current YKS guide.
The exam's number of questions, duration and scoring rules may show minor changes from year to year. The information in this guide is meant to explain the general framework; precise and up-to-date information is always found in the YKS guide published by ÖSYM.
How Is the DİL Score Formed?
The YDT does not produce a score on its own; when the DİL score is calculated, both the YDT and TYT net scores are evaluated together. In other words, a candidate who wants to be placed in foreign-language departments must take both the TYT session and the YDT session.
The general logic is this: the basic-proficiency net scores obtained from the TYT contribute to the DİL score with a certain weight, while the foreign-language net scores obtained from the YDT contribute with a higher weight. For this reason, the decisive pillar of the DİL score is the YDT, but TYT performance cannot be ignored either. In addition, the secondary-education achievement score (OBP) is a component added to the placement score.
How net scores turn into a score, the exact values of the coefficients and the effect on the ranking can be updated each year. For the current values of the weighting ratios, it is best to rely on the ÖSYM guide. If you want to see the calculation logic with examples, our YDT score calculation article will make things easier for you.
YDT Question Types: What Will You Encounter?
The YDT measures a broad range, from grammar to reading comprehension. The question types follow a similar distribution from exam to exam and are generally grouped under the following headings:
- Vocabulary: Questions based on finding the most suitable word for a blank in a sentence.
- Grammar: Fill-in-the-blank questions measuring knowledge of tenses, prepositions, conjunctions and structure.
- Sentence completion: Completing a half-finished sentence in terms of meaning and structural coherence.
- Translation: Finding the option that best captures the meaning, from Turkish into the foreign language or from the foreign language into Turkish.
- Paragraph (reading comprehension): Questions that read a text and probe the main idea, a detail or an inference.
- Dialogue completion: Placing the missing sentence in a conversation according to the context.
- Closest in meaning / paragraph flow: Finding the options that restate the meaning of sentences or that disrupt/complete the flow of a paragraph.
Each of these question types requires a different skill. For example, vocabulary and grammar questions call for quick, pinpoint knowledge, while paragraph questions require patience, attention and a good reading strategy. For this reason, allocating balanced time to all question types in your preparation is more productive than loading up on a single area.
The Difference Between the YDT and the YDS
Because their abbreviations are similar, the YDT and YDS are often confused, but they are completely different exams. We can summarize their most basic differences as follows:
- YDT (Foreign Language Test): Held within the scope of the YKS, for high-school students and graduates who want to be placed in a university for the first time. Its content is more general and measures high-school-level language ability.
- YDS (Foreign Language Proficiency Determination Exam): An exam generally taken for academic and professional purposes, for example graduate-program applications, academic posts, or a language requirement in public service. Its content is more academic and advanced.
In short, the YDT is for university entrance and targets a more general level of language; the YDS is taken for academic-professional reasons and measures a more advanced, academic language proficiency. If you are in your final year of high school and want a language department, your exam is the YDT.
Who Takes the YDT?
The typical candidate profile taking the YDT is someone who wants to study a foreign-language-focused department at university. These candidates are generally:
- Students in their final year of high school targeting language teaching, translation and interpreting, or language-and-literature departments.
- Candidates who are already graduates and want to be placed in these departments, or want to raise their existing score.
- People with a strong interest in foreign languages who want to build their career in translation, teaching or international fields.
If you are curious about the full list of departments the YDT opens up and their score ranges, we covered these departments in detail in our which departments the YDT leads to article. Clarifying your target department is the first step you should take before setting up your study plan.
Wrong Answers and the Net Score Calculation
In the traditional structure of the YKS, whether wrong answers affect the correct ones — that is, the net score calculation — is an important topic. In the classic practice, four wrong answers cancel out one correct answer, and scoring is done on the basis of net scores. However, the way this rule is applied and the scoring methods used in placement can be updated by ÖSYM from year to year.
For this reason, when making strategic decisions such as "how many wrong answers cancel one correct answer" or "is it wiser to leave a question blank or to mark it," you need to base them on the most current rule. Always check the ÖSYM guide published during the exam period; shape your strategy decisions according to this up-to-date information.
How to Prepare for the YDT: An Overview
YDT preparation relies on a systematic plan rather than scattered vocabulary memorization. Successful preparation is generally built on the following pillars:
- A solid vocabulary base: The backbone of the exam is vocabulary. Regular, repetition-based vocabulary study makes a difference both in vocabulary questions and in paragraphs.
- Command of grammar: Having topics such as tenses, prepositions, conjunctions and sentence structures firmly in place lets you solve many questions quickly.
- Reading practice: Paragraph questions carry serious score weight. A regular reading habit increases both your speed and your depth of understanding.
- Plenty of questions and practice tests: Solving practice tests is indispensable for becoming familiar with question types, learning time management and seeing your weak points.
- Error analysis: Noting down your mistakes and analyzing why you made them is the most effective way to avoid repeating the same errors.
If you want a detailed road map for how to allocate time to each of these pillars, our how to study for the YDT guide offers a step-by-step study program. Starting early and progressing regularly are the two habits that work best in this exam.
Summary
The YDT is the YKS's third session, opening the door to foreign-language departments, and is held once a year by ÖSYM. With its 80-question, five-option, multiple-choice structure, it is offered in English, German, French, Arabic and Russian. If you are targeting a language department, taking the YDT is essential to form your DİL score. For the precise and current version of exam dates, quotas and scoring rules, always rely on the YKS guide published by ÖSYM; this guide, meanwhile, offers you the general framework and the logic of preparation.
"The only thing that sets the YDT apart from the TYT and AYT is its focus: a single foreign language. If you are targeting a language department, this session is the engine of your DİL score — build your preparation around it.
