| Çarşamba | Okuma | 60 dk | 2-3 paragraf sorusu + bilinmeyen kelimeleri deftere ekleme |
- Bağlaçlar ve geçiş ifadeleri (however, therefore, although, in addition...)
Okuma hızını geliştirmenin yolu, her kelimeyi sözlükten aramak değildir.
The YDT (Foreign Language Test) is the English exam taken by students who want to win a department with the DİL (Language) score in the university exam. It consists of 80 questions, is reading-heavy, and with a good program it is an exam you can almost entirely "study your way into." In this article we explain, step by step, how to study for the YDT from scratch or from an intermediate level; how many months you should allocate, an example weekly program, which resources really work, and the final-stretch strategy. If you don't yet fully know the content of the exam, it is useful to first take a look at the what is the YDT article and then come back.
How Many Months Does Preparation Take? A Realistic Plan by Level
How much time you need to allocate to the YDT depends on your current level of English. There is no single answer like "3 months is enough for everyone"; so first position yourself honestly.
- Beginner level (weak in basic grammar, narrow vocabulary): A realistic target is 12-18 months. Don't panic; this means about 1-1.5 hours a day regularly, not several hours a day. If you start at the beginning of 11th grade, you will comfortably reach the exam period in 12th grade.
- Intermediate level (knows most of the grammar, struggles while reading): 6-9 months is enough. The real work here is turning knowledge into speed and accuracy in solving questions.
- Good level (reads comfortably, has vocabulary gaps): In 3-4 months, it is possible to reach top net scores with intensive study focused on vocabulary and question types.
Beginner · 12-18 months
Weak in basic grammar, narrow vocabulary. Regular study of 1-1.5 hours a day; starting in 11th grade to be ready by the exam period of 12th grade.
Intermediate · 6-9 months
Knows most of the grammar, struggles while reading. The real work is turning knowledge into speed and accuracy in solving questions.
Good · 3-4 months
Reads comfortably, has vocabulary gaps. Top net scores through intensive study focused on vocabulary and question types.
The healthiest approach is to progress by spreading your preparation across 11th and 12th grades. YDT knowledge is built up by accumulation, not overnight. Starting slow-growing skills such as vocabulary and the reading habit early lets you spend the final period only on practice tests and strategy.
Key idea: What determines the timeline is not the calendar but your current level. Making a plan without knowing where you stand is like setting off without a map. That is why the first step is always a diagnostic test.
First Step: Start With a Diagnostic Test
Start studying by measuring yourself, not by choosing a resource. Solve a past YDT exam under real exam conditions (in one sitting, timed). The goal is not to get a high net score; it is to see where you stand.
After the diagnostic test, answer these questions:
- Do I lose more on vocabulary questions or on reading paragraphs?
- Did the time suffice, or did I run out of time for the last 15-20 questions?
- Can I recognize the patterns in grammar / sentence-completion questions?
- In translation questions, in which direction is the Turkish-English switch harder?
This analysis determines how much time you will allocate to which topic. For example, the program of a student who loses a lot in reading should be completely different from that of a student who struggles with grammar. Keep measuring your progress by repeating the diagnostic test roughly once a month.
Weekly Program: A Balanced Distribution of Study
YDT study stands on four pillars: vocabulary, grammar, question-type practice, and reading. Weaving these together in a balanced way each week is far more productive than burying yourself in a single area. Below is a sample weekly distribution for an intermediate student. Adjust the ratios according to your own diagnostic result.
| Day | Main Focus | Duration | Content |
| Monday | Vocabulary + Grammar | 60-75 min | Reviewing 20-25 new words + one grammar topic (e.g. tenses) |
| Tuesday | Question-type practice | 60 min | Sentence-completion and fill-in-the-blank questions |
| Wednesday | Reading | 60 min | 2-3 paragraph questions + adding unknown words to a notebook |
| Thursday | Vocabulary + Translation | 60 min | Vocabulary review + Turkish-English translation questions |
| Friday | Question-type practice | 60 min | Coherence, dialogue completion, paragraph questions |
| Saturday | Section / mini practice test | 75-90 min | A section from past questions, followed by error analysis |
| Sunday | Review + rest | 45 min | Going over the week's words and mistakes |
Note this: what teaches is not so much the practice test you solve on Saturday, but the error analysis you do afterward. Examine every question you got wrong with the question "why was I wrong?"; transfer the words you didn't know and the grammar patterns you misread into a notebook. As you approach the final period, the program should shift in favor of practice tests and reading.
"What teaches is not so much the practice test itself, but the error analysis you do afterward — ask "why was I wrong?" for every mistake.
Building the Vocabulary and Grammar Base
The invisible backbone of the YDT is vocabulary. Understanding reading paragraphs, translating, and completing sentences all rely on a broad vocabulary. Instead of trying to memorize vocabulary as lists, learn it in sentences and through regular repetition. A system that works on the logic of spaced repetition is the most effective way to beat the forgetting curve. To deepen your vocabulary study, you can apply the methods in our YDT vocabulary guide.
On the grammar side, the YDT asks you not to memorize grammar rules but to recognize patterns. The topics you should prioritize:
- Tenses and tense consistency
- Conjunctions and transition expressions (however, therefore, although, in addition...)
- Prepositions and fixed usages
- Relative clauses and reduced structures
- Conditional sentences and reported speech
Conjunctions are especially critical; because they are decisive both in sentence-completion questions and in working out the logical flow of paragraphs. The meaning of a conjunction often gives you the answer to an entire question.
Reading and Paragraph Speed
The YDT is a reading-heavy exam; a significant portion of the total questions rely directly or indirectly on reading. For this reason, your reading speed and comprehension accuracy are the two factors that most determine your net score.
The way to improve reading speed is not to look up every word in the dictionary. On the contrary, you need to learn to guess unknown words from context. For a regular reading habit:
- Read at least one English paragraph every day; these can also be non-exam texts close to your interests.
- When reading a paragraph, focus first on the main idea rather than the question; then look for the answers to the questions in the text.
- In paragraph questions, learn to distinguish between "main idea," "author's attitude" and "inference" types; each requires a different reading strategy.
- Read with a stopwatch. Measuring how much time you spend on a paragraph and its questions makes your speed improvement concrete.
Translation Practice
The YDT has both English-to-Turkish and Turkish-to-English translation questions. In these questions the trap is often not in vocabulary, but in choosing the option that best fits the whole sentence. The choices can look very similar; the difference between them may be a conjunction, a shift in tense, or an emphasis.
The effective way to study translation questions is this: don't stop when you see the correct choice after solving the question. Ask "why are the other choices wrong?" Seeing which small detail causes the wrong choices to go astray is the fastest way to internalize the logic of translation. On your own, you can also practice by translating short Turkish sentences into English and then comparing them with a reliable source.
Working With Past YDT Questions
The most valuable resource for YDT preparation is, without dispute, ÖSYM's past questions. There are a few clear reasons for this:
- They reflect the question style, the difficulty level and the logic of the traps exactly.
- They let you see which topics come up and how often.
- They are free and official resources; ÖSYM publishes questions from past years.
The most valuable resourceAt the center of YDT preparation should be ÖSYM's past questions: they reflect the question style, difficulty and trap logic exactly, and moreover they are official and free.
Instead of solving past questions at random, use them systematically: you can split each exam into sections and spread it over a week, or solve it timed as a full practice test. After each solving session, categorize your mistakes (vocabulary, grammar, reading, translation, careless error). Over time you will see which category challenges you the most, and you will adjust your program accordingly. Re-solving the same past exam 2-3 months later is also valuable — not for memorization, but to measure your progress.
Practice Tests and Time Management: 80 Questions
The YDT consists of 80 questions, and managing time well is as important as knowledge. If you cannot keep your rhythm throughout the exam, the time runs out before you can even answer the questions you know. A few principles for time management:
- Don't get stuck. If you are spending more than 60-70 seconds on a question, mark it and move on, and leave it for the end. Don't let a single hard question cost you five easy ones.
- Go from easy to hard. Sentence-completion and vocabulary questions are usually faster; by solving these first you can leave more time for reading paragraphs.
- Manage paragraphs as a group. Questions tied to the same paragraph come one after another; save time by reading the text once and solving all its questions.
- Don't neglect the answer sheet. While solving practice tests, build the habit of using an answer sheet; marking answers also takes time in the real exam.
In the last 4-6 weeks, increase your endurance by solving at least one full practice test per week. For detailed tactics, also add the methods in our YDT exam strategy article to your program.
Striking a Balance With the TYT: Both Matter for the DİL Score
A very common mistake is the thought, "I'm a YDT student, the TYT doesn't concern me." Yet your TYT net scores also enter into the calculation of the DİL score. Even if you have a very good net score on the YDT, if you neglect the TYT your ranking may come out lower than you expected.
For this reason, make regular room for the TYT in your study program too. For a YDT-focused student, a reasonable approach is to strike a balance that, while devoting the bulk of the time to the YDT, does not neglect the core subjects of the TYT (the basic topics of Turkish, Mathematics, Social Sciences and Natural Sciences). TYT Turkish and Mathematics in particular deserve attention, both for their contribution to the score and because they are easily neglected.
Remember: The DİL score is a whole. If your YDT net score is the engine, your TYT net score is the wheels that get that engine on the road. Leaving one incomplete means not doing justice to the other.
Free and Effective Resources
You can study for the YDT very productively without expensive packages. Here are the resources we can honestly recommend:
- ÖSYM past questions: The official, free and most realistic resource. These should be at the center of your preparation.
- Gri English YDT modules: With topic-focused study modules separated by question type, they let you work in a targeted way on the area you are weak in.
- English reading resources: Short articles, stories and news texts suited to your level improve your reading speed for free.
- Your own error notebook: A personalized tool that no resource can provide; a notebook compiled from your mistakes is the most valuable material for review.
Instead of increasing the number of resources, it is more productive to exploit a few good resources to the fullest. Rather than half-touching ten different books, study past questions and one module set in depth.
Common Mistakes
- Only memorizing vocabulary: Vocabulary is necessary but not enough on its own; without question-solving practice, knowledge does not turn into net score.
- Solving practice tests but not analyzing them: What teaches is not the raw number of tests, but the lesson drawn from each one.
- Dropping the TYT entirely: It harms the DİL score; keeping the balance is essential.
- Getting stuck on hard questions: It ruins time management and makes you miss easy questions.
- Studying without a plan: Studying "whatever you feel like" every day causes the weakest areas to always stay weak.
- Piling everything into the last month: Vocabulary and reading are slow-growing skills; not starting early is the most expensive mistake.
Final-Stretch Strategy
In the last 4-6 weeks before the exam, the character of your program should change. It is now the time not to learn new topics, but to reinforce what you know and get into exam form.
- Increase the weight of practice tests: Solve at least one full, timed practice test per week and then do a meticulous analysis.
- Return to your error notebook: In this period, review the mistakes and words you have accumulated rather than memorizing new vocabulary.
- Target your weak area: Make one final push on the category you lost the most points in throughout the diagnostic tests.
- Simulate the exam rhythm: Solve practice tests at the real exam time and under real conditions, to get your body and mind used to that pace.
- Rest for the last 2-3 days: Instead of loading new information right before the exam, do light review and keep your mind fresh.
The YDT is an exam that rewards patient and planned study. With the right resources, regular repetition and honest self-analysis, no matter where you are today, reaching your target net score is possible. What matters is starting today and maintaining consistency.
