| Dilbilim | Dilin bilimsel incelenmesi | Akademi, dil teknolojileri, araştırma |
Taban puanlar her yıl değişir.
The YDT (Foreign Language Test) is the test taken by candidates in Turkey who want to be placed into the foreign-language-focused programs of the university entrance exam. So, which programs can you enter with the YDT? In this article we cover in detail the main undergraduate programs you can choose with the DİL score type, what these departments do, their career opportunities, and the points you should watch out for when making your choices. Our aim is to help you clarify your goal while preparing for the exam and to make the right program choice.
What Are the YDT and the DİL Score?
The YDT is the final session of the YKS (Higher Education Institutions Exam), and it is chosen only by candidates who want to be placed into foreign-language programs. The result obtained from this test combines with your TYT score to form the score type called the DİL score. Almost all of the language-focused programs at universities in Turkey admit students with this DİL score type.
If you do not yet fully know what the YDT is and the structure of the exam, we recommend first reading our what is YDT article. If you are curious about how your score is calculated, our YDT score calculation guide explains this topic step by step. In this article, however, our focus is on which doors the DİL score you obtain opens.
Teaching
Teaching programs in English and other languages; a path weighted toward the faculty of education and pedagogy.
Translation
Translation and Interpreting and Translation Studies; an applied track extending from written and oral translation to localization.
Academia & Literature
Language-literature, linguistics, and comparative literature; a route oriented toward research, publishing, and academia.
Important: Whether a program admits students with the DİL score and its score type can be updated from time to time. Before entering the preference period, be sure to verify each program's score type and quota with the current YÖK Atlas and ÖSYM data.
English (Foreign Language) Teaching
Among the most popular programs you can enter with the DİL score, English Language Teaching comes first. This program aims to give students both an advanced command of English and the methods of teaching this language (pedagogy, measurement and assessment, material development). Housed within the faculties of education, this department is a four-year undergraduate program.
When they meet the necessary conditions (for example the teacher appointment exam KPSS and the relevant field exams), graduates can be appointed as teachers in state schools; they can also work in private schools, language courses, and private tutoring. Teaching programs in other languages such as German and French are similarly chosen with the DİL score; for this you need to sit the YDT session in that language.
For candidates with a teaching goal, this program is seen as attractive in terms of job security, holiday schedule, and social contribution. However, keep in mind that appointment quotas change from year to year and that competition can be high.
Translation and Interpreting and Translation Studies
The Translation and Interpreting and Translation Studies departments are designed for those who want to specialize in the field of written (translation) and oral (interpreting) work. In addition to English, these programs are also opened in different languages such as German, French, Russian, Arabic, and Chinese. Remember that you need to sit the YDT session in the language you prefer.
In these departments, not only the foreign language is taught but also translation theory, consecutive and simultaneous (real-time) interpreting techniques, terminology management, field knowledge (legal, medical, technical, literary translation), and translation technologies. While the name "Translation Studies" emphasizes the academic and theoretical dimension a little more, the name "Translation and Interpreting" gives an impression focused on practice; however, the curricula are largely similar from university to university.
In terms of career, graduates can work in translation agencies, international institutions, publishing houses, the media and localization (software/game localization) sector, as freelance translators, or as congress-conference interpreters. Consecutive and simultaneous interpreting generally has high income potential because it requires an advanced command of the language and practice.
| Department | Main Focus | Prominent Career Paths |
| English Language Teaching | Language teaching and pedagogy | Teaching (state/private), language courses |
| Translation and Interpreting / Translation Studies | Written and oral translation | Translator, interpreter, localization specialist |
| English Language and Literature | Literature, linguistics, culture | Academia, publishing, editing |
| American Culture and Literature | US literature and culture | Academia, cultural institutions, media |
| Linguistics | The scientific study of language | Academia, language technologies, research |
English Language and Literature
The English Language and Literature department examines the historical development of English literature, its important authors and works, literary theories, and the foundations of linguistics. Genres such as the novel, poetry, drama, and criticism are covered in detail. This department is suitable for those who want to approach the language with an analytical and critical eye and to interpret texts in depth.
Graduates can work in fields such as an academic career (master's, doctorate, and faculty membership), publishing, editing, proofreading, content production, and journalism. By obtaining pedagogical formation training, they can also choose the teaching path. In addition, an advanced command of English opens many doors for graduates in the private sector.
American Culture and Literature
The American Culture and Literature department, as the name suggests, focuses on the literature and cultural structure of the United States of America. Although it has many points in common with English Language and Literature, its geographic and cultural focus differs: US history, social structure, cinema, and popular culture are also included in the curriculum.
Career opportunities are largely similar to English Language and Literature. Job opportunities are found in academia, cultural institutions, the media, translation, and content fields. When choosing between the two departments, it will be helpful to consider whether your area of interest is British or American literature and culture.
Linguistics and Comparative Literature
Linguistics is the department that examines language as a science. It covers topics such as phonetics/phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and language acquisition. Rather than "learning" a particular foreign language, it aims to understand how language works. Today, linguistics increasingly intersects with the fields of artificial intelligence, natural language processing (NLP), speech technologies, and language technologies.
Comparative Literature, on the other hand, examines the literatures of different languages and cultures comparatively. It investigates themes, movements, and interactions beyond national borders. This department is suitable for candidates interested in multilingual, intercultural thinking who want to orient toward academia or the world of culture and the arts.
Tip: Linguistics can cause disappointment when chosen with the expectation of "I'll learn a foreign language." This department examines the structure of language scientifically; analytical thinking, not practical language learning, is at the forefront. Be sure to examine the department's content before making it a preference.
Other Languages: German, French, Russian Language and Literature, and Arabic Language
The programs you can enter with the DİL score are not limited to English alone. Undergraduate programs exist in many languages such as German Language and Literature, French Language and Literature, Russian Language and Literature, Arabic Language and Literature, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and Chinese. To be placed into these departments, you need to sit the YDT session in the relevant language; for example, if you are going to enter a German department, you must choose the German session of the YDT.
Golden ruleWhatever language your target department is in, sit the YDT session in that language. If you are aiming for German Language and Literature, the English session will not help you.
Because these languages are fields chosen by fewer candidates in Turkey compared with English, competition may be at a different level in some programs; however, this generalization does not hold for every year and every university. Graduates of these languages can build careers in fields such as translation, teaching (with the relevant formation), tourism, international trade, diplomacy, and academia. Specializing in a language that is little spoken but in demand in the business world can provide an important advantage in the long run.
Translation and Interpreting or Language and Literature?
One of the topics candidates are most confused about is the difference between the translation and interpreting departments and the language and literature departments. To summarize briefly:
- Translation and Interpreting / Translation Studies: focuses on translation skill, transfer techniques between two languages, and practice. If your goal is to become a translator or interpreter, this department offers a more direct path.
- Language and Literature: focuses on literary texts, culture, literary theory, and the study of language. If you are interested in academia, literature, publishing, or research, this department is more suitable.
Both departments give their graduates an advanced command of the foreign language and offer many shared opportunities in the business world. When making your choice, weigh together the questions "what do I want to learn?" and "what career am I aiming for?"
"The right program choice shapes your future as much as a good exam result does.
What Score and Ranking Are Required?
The score and ranking required to be placed into these departments change every year according to the university's prestige, its city, the program's quota, that year's preference trends, and the difficulty level of the exam. For example, while the English Translation and Interpreting or English Language and Literature programs of established state universities generally require a higher ranking, cut-off scores can drop noticeably in the less-preferred language programs of provincial universities.
For this reason, in this article we do not give you an exact cut-off score or ranking; because it would be misleading. Instead, what you should do is examine the cut-off scores, rankings, and quotas of recent years using the current YÖK Atlas and ÖSYM data during the preference period. Through YÖK Atlas you can access past years' placement statistics, quota-fill rates, and student profiles.
Warning: Approach the definite statements circulating on the internet, of the type "this ranking is enough for that department," with caution. Cut-off scores change every year. Before deciding, be sure to verify the current official data (YÖK Atlas / ÖSYM).
What to Watch Out for When Choosing a Program?
Choosing the right program is as important as scoring high on the exam. We recommend keeping the following points in mind:
- Your language preference: decide which language you want to study in and sit the YDT session in that language. If you are aiming for a German program, the English session will not help you.
- Your career goal: teaching, translating, academia, private sector... Choose the program most suited to your goal. Research well what the departments actually do.
- Program content: even departments with the same name can have different curricula at different universities. Examine the course programs on the universities' websites.
- University and city: the university's academic staff, facilities, internship/Erasmus opportunities, and the city it is in affect your life.
- Current data: do not build a preference list without verifying quota, cut-off score, and ranking through YÖK Atlas and ÖSYM.
Common Misconceptions
There are some common misconceptions among candidates about the YDT and language departments:
- "With the YDT you can only study teaching." Wrong. With the YDT you can enter many different departments such as translation and interpreting, language and literature, and linguistics.
- "Linguistics is a department that teaches a foreign language." Wrong. Linguistics examines language scientifically; the analytical approach, not practical language learning, is at the forefront.
- "A language and literature graduate cannot find a job." An over-generalization. An advanced command of the language is valuable in many fields such as translation, content, publishing, the private sector, and academia.
- "I already know English, I don't need to prepare." Risky. The YDT requires exam technique with its grammar, vocabulary, sentence completion, translation, and paragraph questions. For preparation, take a look at our how to study for the YDT guide.
- "A cut-off score I checked once is valid forever." Wrong. Scores change every year; checking the current data is essential.
Summary
With the YDT, through the DİL score type, you can enter many departments such as English Language Teaching, Translation and Interpreting and Translation Studies, English Language and Literature, American Culture and Literature, Linguistics, Comparative Literature, and the language-literature programs of various languages (German, French, Russian, Arabic...). Each department's focus, curriculum, and career path differs; that is why clarifying your goal is very important. Always verify exact cut-off score and ranking information from the current YÖK Atlas and ÖSYM data. The right program choice shapes your future as much as a good exam result does.
