- Cümlenin tonunu belirleyen zarflar: however, therefore, nevertheless, particularly, gradually, significantly, hardly, rarely gibi zarflar, özellikle cümle tamamlama ve mantık akışı sorularında kritik rol oynar.
- Phrasal verb'ler: carry out, point out, bring about, give up, put off, come across, take on, look into gibi öbek fiiller YDT'de gerçekten önemlidir ve ezberlenmediğinde tahmini zorlaştırır.
- Edat (preposition) kalıpları: depend on, consist of, result in, deal with, rely on, capable of, responsible for gibi fiil ya da sıfatla sabitlenmiş edatlar, boşluk doldurma sorularının klasik konusudur.
- Kolokasyonlar (birlikte kullanılan kelimeler): make a decision, take into account, pay attention, play a role, raise awareness gibi doğal eşleşmeler, cümlenin doğru sürümünü seçmenizi sağlar.
Kaç Kelime Öğrenmek Gerekir? Kaba Bir Hedef
4-5 binpasif kelime (rahat seviye)
1. Bağlam İçinde Öğrenme
Bir kelimeyi asla tek başına, yalnızca Türkçe karşılığıyla öğrenmeyin. Onu bir örnek cümlenin içinde görün. "Reveal = ortaya çıkarmak" yerine, "The study revealed a strong link between sleep and memory" cümlesini öğrenin.
Bunların mantığı tekil kelime ezberinden farklıdır; çünkü look fiili tek başına "bakmak" iken, look after "bakmak/ilgilenmek", look into "araştırmak", look up to "saygı duymak" anlamına gelir. Tek bir edat, anlamı tamamen değiştirir.
Bu yüzden phrasal verb'leri asla dağınık ezberlemeyin. Onları ya ana fiile göre (take ile: take on, take over, take up, take after) ya da anlama göre (artırmak anlamındakiler: bring up, raise, boost) gruplayın. Edat kalıplarında ise fiil-edat çiftini tek bir birim olarak öğrenin: depend on, consist of, result in, succeed in, differ from. Bunları örnek cümlelerle pekiştirmek, boşluk doldurma sorularında refleks kazandırır.
DikkatYDT'de en çok puan phrasal verb ve edat kalıplarında kaybedilir. Tek bir edat anlamı tümden değiştirir: look after (ilgilenmek), look into (araştırmak), look up to (saygı duymak).
Although the new policy was designed to help small businesses, its long-term ---- on employment turned out to be negative.
- affect
- effect
- affair
- effort
- aspect
Doğru cevap: B) effect
Boşluğun önünde "its long-term" (iyelik + sıfat), arkasında "on employment" var; yani boşluğa bir isim gelmeli. "İstihdam üzerindeki etki" anlamı da isim ister. effect "etki" anlamında isimdir ve effect on yerleşik bir kolokasyondur. affect (A) ise "etkilemek" fiilidir; hem anlamca hem dilbilgisel olarak buraya oturmaz. affair (mesele), effort (çaba) ve aspect (yön) bağlama uymaz.
Neden puan alır?"its long-term ___ on" kalıbının isim istediğini görmek ve effect on kolokasyonunu tanımak, sizi doğrudan B'ye götürür.
- affect / effect: affect genelde fiildir (etkilemek), effect genelde isimdir (etki).
- economic / economical: economic ekonomiyle ilgili, economical tutumlu/tasarruflu demektir.
- sensible / sensitive: sensible mantıklı, sensitive hassas anlamındadır.
- principal / principle: principal başlıca/müdür, principle ilke demektir.
- adopt / adapt: adopt benimsemek/evlat edinmek, adapt uyum sağlamaktır.
- lie / lay: lie yatmak (nesnesiz), lay koymak (nesneli) anlamındadır.
On the YDT, vocabulary knowledge is the invisible backbone of the exam. Even if you don't see a question as a directly asked vocabulary test, you constantly draw on your vocabulary while solving a cloze paragraph, translating a sentence into Turkish, or trying to understand a long paragraph. In this article we explain, step by step, how to take YDT vocabulary out of the "memorization list" mindset and turn it into a study system that really works in the exam.
TL;DR — Quick Summary
- Vocabulary is not a single section on the YDT; it is the backbone feeding all of the cloze, translation, sentence-completion and paragraph questions.
- Rough target: 4,000-5,000 passive words, 5,500-6,000 for a high score. But what counts is not the number but depth (context + collocation + preposition).
- The most points are lost on phrasal verbs and preposition patterns; learn a word not on its own but inside an example sentence.
- The trio of spaced repetition + vocabulary notebook + reading ensures retention; 20-30 minutes of regular daily study beats a single long weekly session.
The Weight of Vocabulary on the YDT: Not Just "Vocabulary Questions"
Most candidates associate vocabulary only with the direct "find the suitable word for the blank" type of question. Yet on the YDT vocabulary knowledge seeps into nearly every question type. Vocabulary questions, sentence completion, cloze (paragraph fill-in-the-blank), Turkish-English and English-Turkish translation, paragraph questions and closest-in-meaning questions all rely, directly or indirectly, on the breadth and depth of your vocabulary.
Let's think about this concretely. If there are three key words you don't know in a reading paragraph, your chance of catching the main idea of that paragraph drops significantly. In the cloze section, to find the word that goes in the blank you need to see both the meaning and that word's grammatical and semantic fit in the sentence. In translation, misunderstanding a single word can reverse the meaning of an entire sentence. In short, vocabulary is the factor that secretly determines your score on the YDT.
"Vocabulary is not a single section on the YDT; it is the invisible backbone feeding all of the cloze, translation, sentence-completion and paragraph questions.
If you haven't yet fully clarified the general structure of the exam and which sections await you, reading the what is the YDT article first will help you place your vocabulary study on the right foundation.
Short summary: On the YDT, vocabulary is not a section on its own; it is an underground river flowing beneath all the sections. Strengthening vocabulary actually means raising your performance across the entire exam.
Which Types of Words Should You Target?
YDT vocabulary sits somewhere between everyday conversational English and academic English. It relies neither on completely street language nor on overly technical jargon. For this reason, focusing your study on certain word groups is far more productive than scattered memorization. The types you should prioritize are:
- Common academic-general verbs: verbs such as establish, obtain, indicate, reveal, maintain, acquire, determine, assume, imply, enhance appear frequently both in reading paragraphs and in sentence questions.
- Frequently used nouns: abstract nouns such as evidence, factor, benefit, purpose, tendency, consequence, ability, approach, source, feature build the skeleton of academic texts.
- Adjectives that mark distinctions in meaning: adjectives such as significant, essential, likely, considerable, appropriate, reliable, sufficient, remarkable are the clues that lead you to the correct answer in fill-in-the-blank questions.
- Adverbs that set the tone of the sentence: adverbs such as however, therefore, nevertheless, particularly, gradually, significantly, hardly, rarely play a critical role, especially in sentence-completion and logical-flow questions.
- Phrasal verbs: phrasal verbs such as carry out, point out, bring about, give up, put off, come across, take on, look into are genuinely important on the YDT and make guessing harder when not memorized.
- Preposition patterns: prepositions fixed with a verb or adjective, such as depend on, consist of, result in, deal with, rely on, capable of, responsible for, are a classic topic of fill-in-the-blank questions.
- Collocations (words used together): natural pairings such as make a decision, take into account, pay attention, play a role, raise awareness let you choose the correct version of the sentence.
How Many Words Do You Need to Learn? A Rough Target
Although giving a precise number would be misleading, a rough framework gives you direction. An average high-school graduate actively knows roughly 1,500-2,000 words. To move comfortably on the YDT, however, a good target is to raise your familiar (passively understood) vocabulary to roughly the 4,000-5,000 range. For candidates aiming at a high score, the 5,000-6,000 band provides a safer comfort zone.
But the real issue here is not the number itself, but its quality. A candidate who knows 3,000 words in depth — with their context, collocations and preposition patterns — scores higher than a candidate who "recognizes" 6,000 words superficially. For this reason, you should balance your goal not with "how many words" but with the question "how deeply do I know each word."
4-5kpassive words (comfortable level)
5.5-6khigh-score target
20-30 minregular daily review
| Level | Familiar words (rough) | Expected comfort |
| Beginner | ~2,000 | Understands basic sentences, struggles with paragraphs |
| Intermediate | ~3,500-4,000 | Usually catches the main idea of a paragraph |
| Good | ~4,500-5,000 | Comfortable in cloze and translation, strong at guessing |
| High | ~5,500-6,000+ | Sees the nuances, eliminates trap choices |
Effective Vocabulary Study Techniques
The biggest trap in vocabulary study is memorizing words one by one and without context. The brain quickly forgets isolated information; connected information, on the other hand, it holds for a long time. The common point of the techniques below is placing the word within a web of context.
1. Learning in Context
Never learn a word on its own, only with its Turkish equivalent. See it inside an example sentence. Instead of "reveal = ortaya çıkarmak," learn the sentence "The study revealed a strong link between sleep and memory." That way you also record which subjects, which objects and which tone the word is used with. Recognizing the word in the exam becomes easier because you have seen it before in a real sentence.
2. Using the Logic of Roots and Affixes
The great majority of English words derive from common roots and affixes. Once you grasp that the suffix -tion forms nouns, that the prefixes un- and in- add negation, and that the suffix -able gives the meaning "capable of being done," you can guess dozens of words from a single root. For example, from the root predict you see the chain prediction, predictable, unpredictable, predictor. This significantly reduces your memorization load and increases your power to guess unknown words.
3. Spaced Repetition
Spaced repetition is scientifically the most effective method of learning vocabulary. Reviewing a word just as you are about to forget it places it far more strongly into long-term memory. In practice, this means seeing the same word again on the first day, then two days later, then a week later, then a month later. Digital card programs such as Anki, or a review calendar you keep by hand, automate this rhythm. Instead of attacking 100 new words every day, reviewing 15-20 new words a day blended with older words is far more lasting.
4. Keeping a Vocabulary Notebook
A vocabulary notebook you write in your own hand is more powerful than ready-made lists, because the process of selecting and writing already etches the word into your memory. Into the notebook add not just the Turkish equivalent, but the word's part of speech, an example sentence, any synonym/antonym, and its typical collocation. Transfer every new word you encounter here; over time this notebook becomes your personal dictionary, best suited to the exam.
5. Semantic Grouping
Group words by topic or meaning clusters: education, environment, technology, health, economy, and so on. When you learn words belonging to the same theme together, the brain links them and one reminds you of another. For example, studying the words pollution, emission, sustainable, renewable, conserve, endangered together within the environment theme makes both learning and recognizing the topic in paragraph questions easier.
Special Attention to Phrasal Verbs and Prepositions
The vocabulary area that most often costs points on the YDT is phrasal verbs and preposition patterns. Their logic is different from memorizing single words; because the verb look on its own means "to look," while look after means "to care for/look after," look into means "to investigate," and look up to means "to respect." A single preposition changes the meaning completely.
For this reason, never memorize phrasal verbs in a scattered way. Group them either by the main verb (with take: take on, take over, take up, take after) or by meaning (those meaning "to increase": bring up, raise, boost). With preposition patterns, learn the verb-preposition pair as a single unit: depend on, consist of, result in, succeed in, differ from. Reinforcing these with example sentences builds a reflex in fill-in-the-blank questions.
Watch outOn the YDT, the most points are lost on phrasal verbs and preposition patterns. A single preposition changes the meaning entirely: look after (to care for), look into (to investigate), look up to (to respect).
Practical tip: Each day study 5 phrasal verbs and 5 preposition patterns with an example sentence. By the end of a month you will have mastered close to 300 patterns; this solves a significant portion of the trickiest questions on the YDT.
Synonym and Antonym Relationships
On the YDT, knowing a word is often not enough; you also need to recognize its near-synonyms and opposites. Because the exam frequently tests you with the logic of "the closest word in meaning" or "an expression that can replace it without breaking the sentence." Being able to see the choices rise, grow, boost, enhance instead of increase, or crucial, vital, essential, significant instead of important, lets you reach the correct answer quickly.
Antonyms, meanwhile, are useful especially in questions built with logic and contrast conjunctions (however, whereas, unlike). Learning opposite pairs such as expand ↔ shrink, increase ↔ decrease, accept ↔ reject, permanent ↔ temporary together both doubles your vocabulary and makes it easier to predict the direction of the sentence. Make it a habit to add at least one synonym and one antonym next to each new word in your vocabulary notebook.
Recognizing a Word in a Question: From Passive to Active
The ultimate goal of vocabulary study is to recognize a word within seconds in the exam environment. Failing to recognize a word you comfortably recall at home, when you see it under exam pressure in a completely different sentence, is a common problem. The way to prevent this is to see the word in various contexts while learning it. Seeing the same word in different sentences, in different tenses, and in different derivatives (verb, noun, adjective forms) lets you recognize it flexibly.
The test of whether you have truly learned a word is being able to select it instantly in a fill-in-the-blank question. To develop this reflex, regularly try the words you study on real question types. To recognize in advance the question formats you will encounter in the exam, studying the examples in the YDT question types article together with your vocabulary knowledge is very valuable.
Worked Example: A Vocabulary Question
Let's see the theory in a real question. The question below tests the YDT's classic "find the word most suitable in meaning for the blank" logic together with a frequently confused pair:
Worked Example Question
Although the new policy was designed to help small businesses, its long-term ---- on employment turned out to be negative.
- affect
- effect
- affair
- effort
- aspect
Correct answer: B) effect
Before the blank is "its long-term" (possessive + adjective), and after it is "on employment"; that is, a noun should go in the blank. The meaning "the effect on employment" also requires a noun. effect is a noun meaning "influence," and effect on is an established collocation. affect (A), on the other hand, is the verb "to influence"; it fits here neither in meaning nor grammatically. affair (matter), effort (endeavor) and aspect (side) do not suit the context.
Why it scores?Seeing that the pattern "its long-term ___ on" requires a noun and recognizing the collocation effect on leads you straight to B. The fact that the meaning (a negative effect) also requires a noun confirms this choice.
Why it loses points?Looking only at the Turkish equivalent "etki" and confusing affect with effect is the most common trap. Because affect is a verb, it does not fit the sentence grammatically either; the candidate who doesn't know the word by its part of speech (noun or verb) falls exactly here.
Frequently Confused Words
Some words are so similar in spelling or meaning that, without careful distinction, they create traps in the exam. You need to learn these by consciously distinguishing them:
- affect / effect: affect is usually a verb (to influence), effect is usually a noun (an influence).
- economic / economical: economic means related to the economy, economical means thrifty/money-saving.
- sensible / sensitive: sensible means reasonable, sensitive means easily affected.
- principal / principle: principal means chief/head, principle means a fundamental rule.
- adopt / adapt: adopt means to take on/to adopt a child, adapt means to adjust.
- lie / lay: lie means to recline (intransitive), lay means to place (transitive).
Learn such pairs together, with example sentences that highlight the difference between them. Collecting the confused words in a separate section of your vocabulary notebook makes the final review before the exam much easier.
Fitting Vocabulary Into Your Study Program and Reinforcing It With Reading
Vocabulary study gives the best result not as a separate "vocabulary hour," but as a habit woven into your general YDT program. Devoting 20-30 minutes a day to regular vocabulary review is far more effective than studying three hours once a week. Consistency is the strongest weapon in learning vocabulary.
The most natural way to make vocabulary stick, meanwhile, is reading. When you read English texts, news or short articles suited to your level, you encounter the words you study again and again in their real contexts. This is the most natural form of spaced repetition: you reinforce the word by seeing it over and over in real use, without trying to memorize it. Add the new words you come across while reading to your notebook; that way reading becomes both a means of reinforcement and a source of new vocabulary.
If you want to position your vocabulary study as part of a holistic exam strategy, combine the time-management and review suggestions in the how to study for the YDT article with your vocabulary routine when setting up your general study plan. When vocabulary, grammar and reading feed one another, your score rises far faster than if you had studied a single area.
Conclusion: The secret to conquering YDT vocabulary is not to memorize long lists overnight; it is to internalize each word with its context, its collocation and regular repetition, in small daily doses. The 20-minute regular routine you start today will be your biggest advantage on exam day.
