Karşılaştırma ve karşıtlık dili, iki şeyi yan yana koyup ne kadar benzediklerini ya da ne kadar ayrıldıklarını okuyucuya göstermenin araç kutusudur. Tek bir gramer kuralı değil, bir söylem işlevidir: cümleleri, fikirleri ve verileri birbirine bağlayan zamk. İki restoranı, iki ekonomik modeli ya da bir grafikteki iki çizgiyi tartarken bu dili kullanırsınız.
Benzerlik
similarly · likewise · both…and · like · as…as
Karşıtlık
whereas · in contrast · however · unlike · conversely
Comparison and contrast language is the toolbox for placing two things side by side and showing the reader how much they resemble or how much they differ. It is not a single grammar rule but a discourse function: the glue that ties sentences, ideas and data together. You use this language when weighing two restaurants, two economic models or two lines on a graph.
Similarity

Contrast

Why does it exist? Because the human mind makes sense of information through contrast. Saying "this product is cheap" is half the information; saying "this product is cheap compared to its rival" is a complete judgement. This is exactly the backbone of academic writing, exam essays and argument paragraphs: measuring one thing against another. It interlocks with Describing Data when narrating data, and with Defining & Classifying language when dividing into categories.
Turkish has plenty of equivalents: gibi, benzer şekilde, aynı, oysa, ise, buna karşın, aksine, halbuki, öte yandan. So the logic is familiar. The difficulty lies not in the logic but in the way of linking. Turkish easily joins two clauses with the suffix "ise" ("He is hard-working, whereas his brother is lazy"); English does this with three separate grammatical classes: conjunction (whereas), adverb (however) and preposition (unlike). Confusing which class demands which punctuation and which complement (a clause or a noun) is the source of almost all the errors in this topic.
- Benzerlik için: similarly, likewise, in the same way, both...and, like, as...as.
- Karşıtlık için: whereas, while, in contrast, on the other hand, however, unlike, conversely.
- whereas ve while BAĞLAÇtır: iki cümleyi tek cümle içinde birleştirir, araya nokta girmez.
- however, in contrast, on the other hand ZARFtır: önce nokta (veya noktalı virgül), sonra virgül ister.
- unlike ve like EDATtır: arkasından bir İSİM gelir, tam cümle değil.
- compared to ve compared with çoğu durumda birbirinin yerine geçer; akademikte compared with hafifçe daha yaygındır.
- both A and B paralel yapı ister: iki isim, iki sıfat ya da iki fiil eşit dilbilgisi türünde olmalı.
- En sık hata: however'ı virgülle bağlaç gibi kullanmak (Sales rose, however profit fell. — yanlış noktalama).
however'ı virgülle bağlaç gibi kullanmak: Sales rose, however profit fell ✗ → Sales rose; however, profit fell ✓. however zarftır, bağlaç değil.
both A and B iki öğeyi eşit dilbilgisi türünde ister: iki isim, iki sıfat ya da iki fiil — both fast and economical.
- For similarity: similarly, likewise, in the same way, both...and, like, as...as.
- For contrast: whereas, while, in contrast, on the other hand, however, unlike, conversely.
- whereas and while are CONJUNCTIONS: they join two clauses within a single sentence, with no full stop between them.
- however, in contrast, on the other hand are ADVERBS: they require a full stop (or semicolon) before and a comma after.
- unlike and like are PREPOSITIONS: they are followed by a NOUN, not a full clause.
- compared to and compared with are interchangeable in most cases; in academic writing compared with is slightly more common.
- both A and B requires a parallel structure: two nouns, two adjectives or two verbs of the same grammatical type.
- Most common error: using however like a conjunction with a comma (Sales rose, however profit fell. — wrong punctuation).
Using however like a conjunction with a comma: Sales rose, however profit fell ✗ → Sales rose; however, profit fell ✓. however is an adverb, not a conjunction.
both A and B requires the two items to be the same grammatical type: two nouns, two adjectives or two verbs — both fast and economical.
Karşılaştırma dilinde "olumlu/olumsuz/soru" ayrımı fiil çekiminden değil, bağlacın gramer sınıfından doğar. Üç temel kuruluşu ayrı ayrı görelim.
Bağlaç
whereas, while → cümle + cümle, tek cümlede
Zarf
however, in contrast → nokta/noktalı virgül sonrası
Edat
unlike, compared to → arkasından İSİM
Bağlaç kuruluşu (whereas / while)
Formül: [Cümle A], whereas [Cümle B]. — Tek bir cümle içinde iki tam cümleyi birleştirir. Araya asla nokta girmez; whereas bağlacın kendisi köprüdür. whereas cümlenin başına da gelebilir: Whereas [A], [B].
Zarf kuruluşu (however / in contrast)
Formül: [Cümle A]. However, [Cümle B]. ya da noktalı virgülle [A]; however, [B]. — İki AYRI cümle vardır; however yalnızca ikinci cümleyi işaretleyen bir zarftır, cümleleri gramer olarak bağlamaz.
Edat kuruluşu (unlike / compared to)
Formül: Unlike [isim], [cümle]. — unlike'tan sonra bir İSİM gelir; ardından esas cümle. compared to/with aynı mantıkla çalışır.
| Sınıf | Örnek kelime | Arkasından ne gelir? | Noktalama |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bağlaç | whereas, while | Tam cümle (aynı cümle içinde) | Ortada virgül, nokta yok |
| Zarf | however, in contrast | Yeni ayrı cümle | Önce nokta/noktalı virgül, sonra virgül |
| Edat | unlike, compared to | İsim / isim öbeği | İsimden sonra virgül, sonra cümle |
In comparison language the 'affirmative/negative/question' distinction does not arise from verb conjugation but from the grammatical class of the connector. Let us look at the three basic constructions one by one.
Conjunction
whereas, while → clause + clause, in one sentence
Adverb
however, in contrast → after a full stop/semicolon
Preposition
unlike, compared to → followed by a NOUN
Conjunction construction (whereas / while)
Formula: [Clause A], whereas [Clause B]. — It joins two full clauses within a single sentence. A full stop never comes between them; the conjunction whereas itself is the bridge. whereas can also come at the start of the sentence: Whereas [A], [B].
Adverb construction (however / in contrast)
Formula: [Clause A]. However, [Clause B]. or with a semicolon [A]; however, [B]. — There are two SEPARATE sentences; however is only an adverb marking the second sentence, it does not grammatically join the sentences.
Preposition construction (unlike / compared to)
Formula: Unlike [noun], [clause]. — After unlike comes a NOUN; then the main clause. compared to/with works with the same logic.
| Class | Example word | What follows? | Punctuation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conjunction | whereas, while | A full clause (within the same sentence) | Comma in the middle, no full stop |
| Adverb | however, in contrast | A new separate sentence | Full stop/semicolon before, comma after |
| Preposition | unlike, compared to | A noun / noun phrase | Comma after the noun, then the clause |
Karşılaştırma dili beş temel işte kullanılır. En yaygından özele doğru gidelim.
1. İki nesneyi/kişiyi karşılaştırma (günlük)
2. Grafik / veri yorumlama (akademik-sınav)
3. İki görüşü tartma (tartışma paragrafı)
4. Benzerlik kurma (paralellik gösterme)
5. Beklentiyle çelişki (ileri)
Comparison language is used in five basic tasks. Let us go from the most common to the more specialised.
1. Comparing two objects/people (everyday)
2. Graph / data interpretation (academic-exam)
3. Weighing two views (argument paragraph)
4. Establishing similarity (showing parallelism)
5. Conflict with expectation (advanced)
Karşılaştırmanın zaman kipiyle doğrudan bağı yoktur; onun yerine cümlede beliren sinyal kelimeler hangi ilişkinin kurulduğunu haber verir. Aşağıdaki tablo bir harita niteliğinde.
| İlişki | Sinyal kelimeler | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|
| Benzerlik | similarly, likewise, in the same way, equally, just as, like | benzer şekilde, aynı şekilde, gibi |
| Karşıtlık (bağlaç) | whereas, while, whilst | oysa, -iken, halbuki |
| Karşıtlık (zarf) | however, in contrast, on the other hand, conversely, by contrast | ancak, buna karşın, öte yandan, tersine |
| Kıyaslama (edat) | unlike, compared to/with, in comparison with, than | aksine, -e kıyasla, -den |
| Ödün/rağmen | nonetheless, nevertheless, even so, all the same, still | yine de, buna rağmen |
Comparison has no direct link with tense; instead the signal words that appear in the sentence announce which relation is being established. The table below serves as a map.
| Relation | Signal words | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Similarity | similarly, likewise, in the same way, equally, just as, like | in the same way, likewise, like |
| Contrast (conjunction) | whereas, while, whilst | whereas, while |
| Contrast (adverb) | however, in contrast, on the other hand, conversely, by contrast | but, in contrast, on the other hand, conversely |
| Comparison (preposition) | unlike, compared to/with, in comparison with, than | unlike, compared to, than |
| Concession/despite | nonetheless, nevertheless, even so, all the same, still | even so, despite that |
Aynı karşıtlığı kuran kelimeler güç, resmiyet ve odak bakımından farklıdır. Doğru kelimeyi seçmek üslubunuzu belirler.
Güç derecesi
whereas / in contrast güçlü, net bir karşıtlık kurar (iki şey açıkça zıttır). however daha yumuşak, ödün verir tonda olabilir. on the other hand ikinci bir bakış açısı sunar, illa zıt olması gerekmez — dengeli değerlendirme sinyalidir.
Resmiyet / register
whilst ve notwithstanding çok resmî ve İngiliz İngilizcesine özgüdür; günlük konuşmada tuhaf durur. but ve though (cümle sonunda) ise konuşma dilidir. Akademik yazıda whereas, in contrast, conversely, compared with altın standarttır.
Odak / vurgu
Karşıtlığı cümlenin başına koymak (Whereas..., Unlike...) ilk öğeyi arka plana atıp ikinciyi öne çıkarır. Sona koymak dengeyi tersine çevirir. Bu, hangi tarafı vurguladığınızı sessizce belirler.
Words that establish the same contrast differ in strength, formality and focus. Choosing the right word determines your style.
Degree of strength
whereas / in contrast establish a strong, clear contrast (the two things are clearly opposite). however can be softer, in a more concessive tone. on the other hand offers a second point of view, which need not be opposite — it is a signal of balanced evaluation.
Formality / register
whilst and notwithstanding are very formal and specific to British English; they seem odd in everyday speech. but and though (at the end of a sentence) are conversational. In academic writing whereas, in contrast, conversely, compared with are the gold standard.
Focus / emphasis
Placing the contrast at the start of the sentence (Whereas..., Unlike...) pushes the first item into the background and foregrounds the second. Placing it at the end reverses the balance. This silently determines which side you emphasise.
Türkçe karşıtlığı çoğunlukla tek bir ekle ya da kelimeyle akıcı biçimde kurar: -ken, ise, oysa, halbuki, -e karşın, aksine. İngilizce ise aynı işi üç ayrı gramer sınıfına böler ve her birinin kendi noktalama ve tamamlayıcı kuralı vardır. Türkçe düşünen öğrencinin tuzağı, bu tek-kelime esnekliğini İngilizceye taşımaya çalışmaktır.
- Türkçe "...ise" iki cümleyi rahatça birleştirir → İngilizcede bu whereas'tır, however DEĞİL (however cümle bağlamaz).
- Türkçe "...nin aksine" hem isim hem cümle alabilir gibi hissettirir → İngilizcede unlike SADECE isim alır.
- Türkçe "gibi" hem benzetme hem örnekleme yapar → İngilizcede benzerlik 'like', örnekleme 'such as'; karıştırma.
Turkish usually builds contrast fluently with a single suffix or word: -ken, ise, oysa, halbuki, -e karşın, aksine. English, by contrast, splits the same job into three separate grammatical classes, each with its own rule of punctuation and complement. The trap for a student who thinks in Turkish is to try to carry this single-word flexibility over into English.
- Turkish "...ise" easily joins two clauses → in English this is whereas, NOT however (however does not join clauses).
- Turkish "...nin aksine" feels as though it can take both a noun and a clause → in English unlike takes ONLY a noun.
- Turkish "gibi" does both comparison and exemplification → in English similarity is 'like', exemplification is 'such as'; do not confuse them.
| Yapı | Ne yapar | Örnek | Karışma noktası |
|---|---|---|---|
| whereas (karşıtlık) | İki şeyi zıtlıkla tartar | Tea is calming, whereas coffee energizes. | although ile karışır: although 'rağmen' der, whereas 'oysa' der |
| although (ödün) | Beklentiye rağmen der | Although it rained, we went out. | whereas saf karşıtlık, although beklenti bozumu |
| because (Neden-Sonuç Dili) | Sebep kurar | Sales rose because prices fell. | karşıtlık değil neden; zıt yön yok |
| such as (Tanımlama & Sınıflandırma) | Örnek verir | Fruits such as apples are healthy. | like ile karışır: like=benzetme, such as=örnekleme |
| increased by (Veri Betimleme) | Değişimi ölçer | Sales increased by 20%. | compared to ile birlikte kullanılır ama ayrı işlev |
| Structure | What it does | Example | Point of confusion |
|---|---|---|---|
| whereas (contrast) | Weighs two things by opposition | Tea is calming, whereas coffee energizes. | confused with although: although means 'even though', whereas means 'while' |
| although (concession) | Says despite the expectation | Although it rained, we went out. | whereas is pure contrast, although is a broken expectation |
| because (Cause-Effect Language) | Establishes a cause | Sales rose because prices fell. | not contrast but cause; no opposing direction |
| such as (Defining & Classifying) | Gives an example | Fruits such as apples are healthy. | confused with like: like=comparison, such as=exemplification |
| increased by (Describing Data) | Measures change | Sales increased by 20%. | used together with compared to but a separate function |
Karşılaştırma dilinin birkaç kaygan noktası var; bunlar kural değil, dikkat gerektiren istisnalardır.
- while çift anlamlı: karşıtlık ('While I agree, I have doubts') VE zaman ('While cooking, I sang'). Cümle başında karşıtlık anlamı daha güçlüdür.
- however = 'her nasıl olursa olsun' anlamıyla da gelir: 'However hard I try, I fail.' Bu karşıtlık zarfı değildir; ayrı bir yapıdır.
- like gündelik konuşmada bağlaç gibi kullanılır ('Like I said...'), ama akademik yazıda bu YANLIŞ sayılır; orada 'as' gerekir: 'As I said...'.
- compared to vs compared with: benzerlik vurgulanırken 'to', ayrıntılı fark analizinde 'with' tercih edilir — ama bu ayrım modern kullanımda büyük ölçüde silinmiştir.
Comparison language has a few slippery points; these are not rules but exceptions that require care.
- while is ambiguous: contrast ('While I agree, I have doubts') AND time ('While cooking, I sang'). At the start of a sentence the contrast meaning is stronger.
- however also comes with the meaning 'no matter how': 'However hard I try, I fail.' This is not the contrast adverb; it is a separate structure.
- like is used like a conjunction in casual speech ('Like I said...'), but in academic writing this is considered WRONG; there 'as' is needed: 'As I said...'.
- compared to vs compared with: 'to' when emphasising similarity, 'with' in a detailed analysis of difference — but this distinction has largely disappeared in modern usage.
Günlük konuşmada karşılaştırma dili daha sade ve rahat olur. whereas, in contrast gibi resmî kelimeler yerine but, though, unlike ve compared to hâkimdir.
In everyday conversation, comparison language is plainer and more relaxed. Instead of formal words such as whereas, in contrast, the dominant ones are but, though, unlike and compared to.
Akademik yazıda karşılaştırma dili, nesnelliği ve dengeli değerlendirmeyi kurmanın ana aracıdır. Burada tercih edilenler: whereas, in contrast, conversely, compared with, by comparison, similarly, likewise. Konuşma diline özgü 'but, though, like' ise kaçınılır. Cümle başı bağlayıcılar paragrafın mantık akışını okuyucuya sinyaller.
- 'In contrast' cümle başı, virgülle: keskin karşıtlık.
- 'however' cümle ortasında iki virgül arasında (Solar output, however, is...): ileri ama doğru kullanım.
- 'by comparison' ikinci nesneyi karşılaştırıyor.
- 'Like fossil fuels' + isim: benzerlik kurar (like edatı, arkasından isim; en doğal benzerlik kalıbı).
- 'whereas' iki cümleyi tek cümlede bağlıyor (nükleer verir; oysa güneş veremez).
- 'both...and' burada 'both sources' olarak öznede; 'neither' olumsuz eşleme.
In academic writing, comparison language is the main tool for establishing objectivity and balanced evaluation. The preferred ones here: whereas, in contrast, conversely, compared with, by comparison, similarly, likewise. The conversational 'but, though, like' are avoided. Sentence-initial connectors signal the logical flow of the paragraph to the reader.
- 'In contrast' at the start of a sentence, with a comma: sharp contrast.
- 'however' in mid-sentence between two commas (Solar output, however, is...): advanced but correct use.
- 'by comparison' compares the second object.
- 'Like fossil fuels' + noun: establishes similarity (like as a preposition, followed by a noun; the most natural similarity pattern).
- 'whereas' joins two clauses in one sentence (nuclear provides; whereas solar cannot).
- 'both...and' here appears in the subject as 'both sources'; 'neither' is a negative pairing.
- 'by contrast' cümle başında karşıtlık kuruyor (In a small town, by contrast,...).
- 'whereas' metin boyunca defalarca iki cümleyi tek cümlede bağlıyor — akademik karşıtlığın omurgası.
- 'On the other hand' dengeli ikinci bakış açısı sunuyor, tam zıt değil.
- 'by contrast' ikinci kez, insan ilişkileri ekseninde karşıtlık kuruyor (şehir: çok ama tanımadık; kasaba: az ama tanıdık).
- 'Unlike a town' ve 'compared with a city' — edat kuruluşları, arkasından isim.
- 'Neither is simply superior' — olumsuz eşleme ile denge.
- 'Likewise' ikinci bir benzer durumu tanıtıyor (aynı kişi farklı yaşta).
- 'Compared to the past' cümle başı kıyas edatı; 'while' burada zaman değil eşzamanlılık ('şehir işini korurken').
- 'by contrast' establishes contrast at the start of a sentence (In a small town, by contrast,...).
- 'whereas' joins two clauses in one sentence again and again throughout the text — the backbone of academic contrast.
- 'On the other hand' offers a balanced second point of view, not exactly opposite.
- 'by contrast' a second time, establishing contrast on the axis of human relationships (city: many but unknown; town: few but familiar).
- 'Unlike a town' and 'compared with a city' — preposition constructions, followed by a noun.
- 'Neither is simply superior' — balance through a negative pairing.
- 'Likewise' introduces a second similar situation (the same person at a different age).
- 'Compared to the past' a sentence-initial comparison preposition; 'while' here is not time but simultaneity ('while keeping a city job').

Bu sorular kuralı değil, anlamı yoklar. Cümlenin ne söylediğini düşün.
- 'Tea is calming, whereas coffee is stimulating.' — Bu cümle iki şeyin benzerliğini mi, farkını mı vurguluyor?Farkını (karşıtlık). whereas iki zıt özelliği yan yana koyar: çay sakinleştirir, kahve uyarır.
- 'Like coffee, tea contains caffeine.' — Buradaki 'like' benzerlik mi kuruyor, örnek mi veriyor?Benzerlik kuruyor. 'like + isim' iki şeyin ortak özelliğini gösterir (ikisi de kafein içerir). Örnekleme olsaydı 'such as' gelirdi.
- 'He is talented. However, he lacks discipline.' — İkinci cümle beklenen bir sonuç mu, beklenmedik mi?Beklenmedik. Yetenekli birinden disiplin bekleriz; however bu beklentinin bozulduğunu işaretler.
- 'Unlike the north, the south is dry.' — Hangi bölge kurak?Güney kurak. unlike kuzeyi referans alır; asıl yargı 'the south is dry' cümlesindedir.
- 'Both the price and the quality are excellent.' — Kaç özellik övülüyor?İki özellik: fiyat VE kalite. both...and ikisini de olumlu olarak eşler.
These questions test not the rule but the meaning. Think about what the sentence says.
- 'Tea is calming, whereas coffee is stimulating.' — Does this sentence emphasise the similarity or the difference of two things? The difference (contrast). whereas places two opposite qualities side by side: tea calms, coffee stimulates.
- 'Like coffee, tea contains caffeine.' — Does 'like' here establish similarity or give an example? It establishes similarity. 'like + noun' shows a shared feature of two things (both contain caffeine). If it were exemplification, 'such as' would come instead.
- 'He is talented. However, he lacks discipline.' — Is the second sentence an expected result or an unexpected one?Unexpected. We expect discipline from a talented person; however marks that this expectation is broken.
- 'Unlike the north, the south is dry.' — Which region is dry?The south is dry. unlike takes the north as the reference; the main judgement is in the clause 'the south is dry'.
- 'Both the price and the quality are excellent.' — How many features are being praised? Two features: the price AND the quality. both...and couples them both positively.

(however ile işaretle)
- Rehber soru 4: Sonuçta hangisi hangi durumda tercih edilir? (dengeli kapanış)
- Noktalamayı kontrol et: however/in contrast → nokta+virgül; whereas → ortada virgül; unlike → isim.
Task: Write a 120-150 word paragraph comparing two things. The topic is your choice: it could be two cities, two phones, two learning methods or two trends on a graph. Use at least one similarity (similarly/both) and two contrasts (whereas + however/in contrast); add at least one preposition construction with unlike or compared to.
- Guiding question 1: What do the two things you compare have in common? (a similarity sentence)
- Guiding question 2: What is their biggest difference? (weigh it in one sentence with whereas)
- Guiding question 3: Is there an unexpected contradiction? (mark it with however)
- Guiding question 4: In the end, which is preferred in which situation? (a balanced closing)
- Check the punctuation: however/in contrast → full stop+comma; whereas → comma in the middle; unlike → noun.
Kavram kontrol soruları: Bir cümle verip 'Bu karşıtlık mı, benzerlik mi, yoksa rağmen mi?' diye sor. Örneğin 'He is rich; however, he is sad' — öğrenci 'rağmen' demeli, saf karşıtlık değil.
Concept-check questions: Give a sentence and ask 'Is this contrast, similarity or concession?' For example 'He is rich; however, he is sad' — the student should say 'concession', not pure contrast. This gives a feel for the difference between whereas and however. Then probe: 'what comes after unlike — a clause or a noun?'
Activity: 'Comparison tournament' — draw two object cards (cat/dog, winter/summer, book/film) and have the student build one similarity + two contrast sentences in 30 seconds, correct punctuation required. Do an error hunt as a class. With advanced groups, make the cards abstract (capitalism/socialism, solar/nuclear) and make C1 words such as conversely, by comparison, whilst compulsory. For a writing output, hand out the academic paragraph in section 16 as a model text.
- Karşılaştırma dili iki şeyi benzerlik ya da karşıtlık ekseninde tartar; akademik yazının belkemiğidir.
- Üç gramer sınıfı: BAĞLAÇ (whereas, while → cümle+cümle, tek cümlede), ZARF (however, in contrast → nokta+virgül), EDAT (unlike, compared to → isim).
- En sık hata: however'ı tek virgülle bağlaç gibi kullanmak. Doğrusu: nokta/noktalı virgül + However + virgül.
- unlike doğrudan isim alır; 'to' ya da 'from' eklenmez. 'in contrast TO' ama 'in contrast,' (cümle başı).
- whereas = saf karşıtlık (iki farklı şey), however/nonetheless = beklenti bozumu (rağmen); ikisini karıştırma.
- both...and paralel yapı ister ve araya 'also' girmez; benzerlik için similarly/likewise cümle başında virgülle.
- Register: akademikte whereas, in contrast, conversely, compared with; konuşmada but, though, unlike, compared to.
- Sinyal kelime işlevi garantilemez: while ve still çift anlamlıdır — bağlama bak.

- Comparison language weighs two things on the axis of similarity or contrast; it is the backbone of academic writing.
- Three grammatical classes: CONJUNCTION (whereas, while → clause+clause, in one sentence), ADVERB (however, in contrast → full stop+comma), PREPOSITION (unlike, compared to → noun).
- Most common error: using however like a conjunction with a single comma. Correct: full stop/semicolon + However + comma.
- unlike takes a noun directly; 'to' or 'from' is not added. 'in contrast TO' but 'in contrast,' (at the start of a sentence).
- whereas = pure contrast (two different things), however/nonetheless = broken expectation (despite); do not confuse the two.
- both...and requires a parallel structure and 'also' does not go between them; for similarity use similarly/likewise at the start of a sentence with a comma.
- Register: in academic writing whereas, in contrast, conversely, compared with; in speech but, though, unlike, compared to.
- A signal word does not guarantee the function: while and still are ambiguous — look at the context.
