IELTS'te Lexical Resource puanı "zor kelime bilmek" değil, doğru kelimeyi doğru eşiyle (collocation) ve yerinde kullanmaktır. Bu rehber kelime ezberi değil kelime yöntemi verir: collocation, paraphrase, Task 1/Task 2 dil bankaları, 7 tema collocation seti ve band 5–9 karşılaştırması. Ham kelimeyi ise kademeli 1000/3000/5000 listelerinden çalışırsın.
In IELTS, the Lexical Resource score is not about "knowing hard words"; it is about using the right word, with the right partner (collocation), in the right place. This guide gives a vocabulary method, not vocabulary memorisation: collocation, paraphrase, Task 1/Task 2 language banks, 7 thematic collocation sets and a band 5–9 comparison. For the raw words themselves, you study from the tiered 1000/3000/5000 lists.
Writing ve Speaking'in dört ölçütünden biri Lexical Resource (LR) — kelime dağarcığı.
| 6 | Konuya yeterli; bazı az-yaygın kelime denenir ama hatalarla; collocation zaman zaman yanlış (do a mistake). |
| 7 | Esnek kullanım; az-yaygın kelime ve collocation farkındalığı; ara sıra kelime-seçim/yazım hatası ama anlam net. |
Belirsiz kelimeleri (good, bad, thing, a lot) sistematik olarak avla ve isabetli karşılıklarıyla değiştir. Temel collocation hatalarını (make/do, heavy/strong) kapat. Bu tek başına seni 6.5'e taşır.
Her tema için 8-10 çekirdek collocation'ı ezberden değil üretimden bil. Paraphrase'i mekanik değil anlamlı yap.
One of the four criteria in Writing and Speaking is Lexical Resource (LR) — vocabulary. But LR is not about "knowing hard words". The examiner looks at three things: range (not repeating the same word), precision (choosing the exactly right word) and naturalness (collocation — the correct partner of words). A fancy word used in the wrong place scores lower than a plain word used correctly.
| Band | Vocabulary profile |
|---|---|
| 5 | Limited and repetitive; basic words are correct but vague terms like good, bad, important, thing; collocation errors make meaning harder to follow. |
| 6 | Adequate for the topic; some less common words are attempted but with errors; collocation occasionally wrong (do a mistake). |
| 7 | Flexible use; awareness of less common words and collocation; occasional word-choice/spelling error but meaning is clear. |
| 8 | Wide and fluent vocabulary; uses rare words and idiomatic language with ease; catches subtle shades of meaning (connotation); errors are very rare and minor. |
| 9 | Natural and subtle; rare words perfectly placed; flawless collocation; almost no errors. |
The difference between the bands in this table is not, as most students think, "how many words you know". Between Band 5 and Band 7 the number of words known matters less than you might expect; the real difference is how precisely and naturally a known word is placed. Someone writing at Band 5 might also know the word detrimental; the difference is whether they can use it inside a correct phrase like a detrimental effect on health, in the right context. So set your goal not as "memorising more words" but as "placing the words you know flawlessly".
Systematically hunt down vague words (good, bad, thing, a lot) and replace them with precise equivalents. Close the basic collocation errors (make/do, heavy/strong). This alone takes you to 6.5.
For each theme, know 8-10 core collocations not from memory but from production. Make your paraphrasing meaningful, not mechanical. Separate register (Writing vs Speaking). These three steps are the threshold of 7.
Use idiomatic language and subtle shades of meaning (connotation) correctly; avoid the show-off word. Combine two themes naturally in a single sentence. A few perfectly precise rare words beat many half-right ones.
The key to moving from 6 to 7 is not "harder words" but collocation + precision. This page gives not a vocabulary list but a method for using vocabulary correctly. For the raw list (tiered 1000/3000/5000), we point you to the Word Bank and IELTS Vocabulary practice at the end of the page.
"Recognising" a word (understanding it when you read it) and "producing" it (using it correctly in your own sentence) are different things. IELTS measures production. The rule: a word is yours only once you have used it correctly in your own sentence.
The distinction behind this is between passive and active vocabulary. Passive vocabulary is the words you recognise when you read/hear them; active vocabulary is what you can comfortably produce in your own sentence. Most students' passive vocabulary is many times larger than their active — and IELTS Writing and Speaking measure only the active. So the goal of "recognising new words" is misleading; the real work is moving words you know passively into the active store by producing them again and again. Being able to actively use fifty words scores far higher on the exam than passively recognising two hundred.
Collocation, birlikte kullanılan kelime çiftidir. İngilizce heavy rain der, strong rain demez; make a decision der, do a decision demez. Türk öğrenci kelimeyi tek tek çevirdiği için en çok puanı burada kaybeder. Collocation'ı ezberle, tek tek çevirme.
| ✗ Türkçe-çeviri hatası | ✓ Doğru collocation |
|---|---|
| strong rain | heavy rain |
| do a decision / do a mistake | make a decision / make a mistake |
| say your opinion | express / give your opinion |
| big problem (zayıf) | a serious / pressing problem |
| gain money | earn money / make money |
| high knowledge | extensive / in-depth knowledge |
| make a sport | do / play a sport |
|---|---|---|
| Fiil + İsim | eylem + nesne | raise awareness, meet a deadline, pose a threat, tackle a problem, draw a conclusion, conduct research, achieve a goal, address an issue |
| Sıfat + İsim | niteleyen + isim | a heated debate, a common misconception, a viable alternative, a compelling argument, adverse effects, a pressing concern, ample opportunity |
| İsim + İsim | iki isim birleşimi | crime rate, poverty line, job satisfaction, life expectancy, traffic congestion, peer pressure, climate change |
A collocation is a pair of words used together. English says heavy rain, not strong rain; it says make a decision, not do a decision. Because Turkish students translate word by word, they lose the most marks here. Memorise collocations; do not translate them one by one.
| ✗ Word-for-word translation error | ✓ Correct collocation |
|---|---|
| strong rain | heavy rain |
| do a decision / do a mistake | make a decision / make a mistake |
| say your opinion | express / give your opinion |
| big problem (weak) | a serious / pressing problem |
| gain money | earn money / make money |
| high knowledge | extensive / in-depth knowledge |
| make a sport | do / play a sport |
When you learn a new noun, note down which verb/adjective it takes as well. In the dictionary, look not at the word but at its partner in the example sentence. Band 7+ comes with collocation awareness.
Collocation is not random; it forms in certain grammatical patterns. If you recognise these patterns, then when you see a new word you ask the right question: "what is its typical partner?" The four types most useful to you in IELTS are these.
| Type | Pattern | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| Verb + Noun | action + object | raise awareness, meet a deadline, pose a threat, tackle a problem, draw a conclusion, conduct research, achieve a goal, address an issue |
| Adjective + Noun | modifier + noun | a heated debate, a common misconception, a viable alternative, a compelling argument, adverse effects, a pressing concern, ample opportunity |
| Noun + Noun | two nouns combined | crime rate, poverty line, job satisfaction, life expectancy, traffic congestion, peer pressure, climate change |
| Adverb + Adjective | intensifier + adjective | deeply concerned, widely accepted, highly effective, entirely dependent, closely linked, readily available, increasingly popular |
Rather than skimming through these four types, understanding a few entries in depth lets you internalise the pattern. In the verb+noun type, look at the phrase raise awareness: because the Turkish-thinking student says "increase awareness", they automatically write increase awareness; this is grammatically understandable but the natural verb for lifting awareness in English is raise (raise awareness / raise a concern / raise the standard). This small-seeming choice shows the examiner that you learned the word with its context, and it is exactly the "collocation awareness" that separates Band 6 from 7. In the adjective+noun type, the phrase adverse effects corrects another typical error: when the student wants to say "bad effects" they write bad effects, whereas in academic writing the natural partner of a negative outcome is adverse or detrimental, and these sit only with certain nouns like effects, consequences, impact. Finally, the noun+noun item life expectancy shows how covering a one-word concept with two nouns stands tighter and more academic; a student who recognises this pattern can produce dozens of phrases like crime rate, job satisfaction, peer pressure by the same logic.
The type students most neglect is adverb+adjective, yet it is one of the fastest to earn marks. Writing critically important instead of very important, or increasingly common instead of very common, lifts a sentence from a Band 5 tone to a Band 7 tone with a single word. Try removing the word very from your essay as an exercise.
A word has a very common, "weak" partner (a big problem) and a more apt, "strong" partner (a pressing problem). Both are grammatically correct; but the strong collocation raises the Lexical Resource score because it shows conscious word choice. The three examples below take the same idea from weak to strong:
IELTS aynı kelimeyi tekrar etmeni cezalandırır. Hem soruyu parafraz etmen (kopyalamamak) hem de yazı boyunca eş anlamlıları döndürmen gerekir. Aşağıdaki tablo en çok tekrar edilen kelimelerin akademik alternatiflerini verir.
| Sık kullanılan | Akademik alternatifler |
|---|---|
| important | significant, crucial, vital, key, essential |
| increase (fiil) | rise, grow, climb, surge, expand |
| reduce | cut, lower, curb, decrease, diminish |
| cause (fiil) | lead to, result in, give rise to, trigger, bring about |
| problem | issue, drawback, obstacle, challenge, setback |
| good / bad (belirsiz) | beneficial / detrimental, positive / adverse |
| a lot of | numerous, a great deal of, a considerable amount of |
| show | illustrate, demonstrate, reveal, indicate |
Her kelimeyi eş anlamlısıyla değiştirmeye çalışma; teknik terimler (temperature, percentage, unemployment) korunur.
IELTS penalises repeating the same word. You must both paraphrase the question (not copy it) and rotate synonyms throughout your writing. The table below gives academic alternatives for the most repeated words.
| Commonly used | Academic alternatives |
|---|---|
| important | significant, crucial, vital, key, essential |
| increase (verb) | rise, grow, climb, surge, expand |
| reduce | cut, lower, curb, decrease, diminish |
| cause (verb) | lead to, result in, give rise to, trigger, bring about |
| problem | issue, drawback, obstacle, challenge, setback |
| good / bad (vague) | beneficial / detrimental, positive / adverse |
| a lot of | numerous, a great deal of, a considerable amount of |
| show | illustrate, demonstrate, reveal, indicate |
The secret to using this list safely is seeing that synonyms are not interchangeable; each alternative demands its own context. Look at the increase row: rise and grow are neutral and valid everywhere, but surge describes only a sudden, large jump — prices surged is natural, whereas describing a slow change with surged is an exaggeration and breaks precision. Likewise, in the cause row there is a tone difference between give rise to and trigger: trigger implies a sudden, single triggering event (the decision triggered protests), while give rise to describes producing a result gradually. The most critical row is good/bad: here the aim is not merely "a cooler word" but turning a vague value judgement into a measurable one — writing a detrimental effect instead of a bad effect adds both academic tone and clarity to the sentence. The Turkish student's most frequent error is picking one of these alternatives at random and dropping it into the wrong context; the right method is to see each new synonym in an example sentence and note when it fits.
Do not try to replace every word with a synonym; technical terms (temperature, percentage, unemployment) are kept. A forced synonym (like jobless situation) breaks naturalness and lowers LR. The aim is natural variety, not show.
Paraphrase is not just "find a synonym". A skilled writer restates the same idea with four different levers and combines them. When you can't find a synonym, you use the other three — which is why real paraphrasing power comes less from vocabulary than from mastery of these techniques.
If you copy the question text word for word in your introduction, those words do not count towards your word count and the examiner cannot see your paraphrasing skill. Make it a habit to use at least two techniques together in the first sentence: one synonym + one word-form change safely handles most questions.
Kural basit: aynı fiili iki kez kullanma, aynı yapıyı üst üste bindirme — aşağıdaki iki kalıbı ve dereceleri döndürerek her cümleyi tazele.
| Yön | Fiil / isim | Derece (zarf · sıfat) |
|---|---|---|
| Artış | rise, climb, surge, soar; a rise, growth, an upturn | sharply/sharp, dramatically/dramatic, steeply/steep (büyük); steadily/steady, gradually/gradual (orta); slightly/slight, marginally/marginal (küçük) |
| Düşüş | fall, decline, plunge, plummet, dip; a drop, a slump | |
| Sabit/dalga | level off, plateau, hold steady; fluctuate, vary; peak at, bottom out |
İki kalıp, döndür: (1) fiil+zarf → Unemployment fell sharply. (2) there+be+sıfat+isim → There was a sharp fall in unemployment.
Map (harita) ve process (süreç) grafiklerinin ortak sırrı ise edilgen çatıdır: haritada değişimi yapan özne önemsiz olduğu için a car park was built, the woodland was cleared gibi pasif kalıplar doğaldır; süreçte de the beans are roasted, the mixture is filtered pasifi tekrarlanır. Aşağıdaki örnekler bu türleri bağlamda gösteriyor:
Task 1'in ikinci yarısı verileri birbirine göre konumlandırmaktır: hangisi daha yüksek, kaç kat, en yüksek/en düşük, hangi oranda. Tek başına rakam okumak Band 5'tir; ilişkileri kelimeyle kurmak Band 7+'dır.
| İşlev | Kalıplar (English) |
|---|---|
| Karşılaştırma (fark) | considerably higher than, marginally lower than, roughly double, three times as many as, far outnumbered, in contrast to |
| En yüksek / en düşük | the highest figure, peaked at, reached a maximum of, the lowest proportion, the least popular, bottomed out at |
| Oran / pay | accounted for a third, made up half of, a significant proportion, a small fraction, one in five, the majority of |
| Benzerlik | a similar pattern, likewise, in the same way, comparable figures, broadly in line with |
| Zaman aralığı | over the period, throughout the decade, within a span of five years, by the end of the period |
Task 1'de her rakamı yazmak zorunda değilsin; en çarpıcı karşılaştırmaları ve uç değerleri seç. "Data selection" (hangi veriyi öne çıkardığın) Task Achievement puanını da yükseltir. Rakamı verirken yaklaşıklama kelimeleriyle (approximately, just over) yumuşat.
The language of describing a Task 1 visual rests largely on movement verb + degree and comparison/proportion expressions. Mastering these two axes actually solves more than half of the vocabulary work in Task 1: data either changes over time (then you need a movement verb) or is compared with other data (then you need comparison language). The Turkish student's biggest trap here is repeating the same increase or the graph shows pattern at the start of every sentence; this repetition directly signals to the examiner that your vocabulary is limited and keeps Lexical Resource at Band 5-6. The rule is simple: do not use the same verb twice, do not stack the same structure — refresh every sentence by rotating the two patterns and degrees below.
| Direction | Verb / noun | Degree (adverb · adjective) |
|---|---|---|
| Increase | rise, climb, surge, soar; a rise, growth, an upturn | sharply/sharp, dramatically/dramatic, steeply/steep (large); steadily/steady, gradually/gradual (moderate); slightly/slight, marginally/marginal (small) |
| Decrease | fall, decline, plunge, plummet, dip; a drop, a slump | |
| Stable/fluctuating | level off, plateau, hold steady; fluctuate, vary; peak at, bottom out |
Two patterns, rotate them: (1) verb+adverb → Unemployment fell sharply. (2) there+be+adjective+noun → There was a sharp fall in unemployment.
The power of these verbs emerges when they are matched with their degrees; being able to describe the same direction at different intensities shows in Task 1 that you "read the data correctly". Each line below shows a phrase in context, so you learn the word not alone but with its use:
A typical error to watch for is attaching strong verbs like plummet, soar, plateau to small changes: describing a two-per-cent decline with plummeted misrepresents the data and lowers both Lexical Resource and Task Achievement. The rule is simple — the intensity of the verb must match the intensity of the change in the graph.
Memorising these phrases is not enough; you must recognise the "grammar" of each graph type. The heart of a pie chart is the proportion verbs (account for, make up, constitute) and the most common error here is confusing ratio with proportion: if the graph has only percentages, you say proportion or share; ratio is only correct when two values are given as "X to Y". The shared secret of map and process graphs is the passive voice: on a map, because the agent of the change is unimportant, passive patterns like a car park was built, the woodland was cleared are natural; in a process, the passive the beans are roasted, the mixture is filtered is repeated. The examples below show these types in context:
The second half of Task 1 is positioning the data relative to each other: which is higher, how many times, the highest/lowest, in what proportion. Reading numbers alone is Band 5; building relationships in words is Band 7+.
| Function | Patterns (English) |
|---|---|
| Comparison (difference) | considerably higher than, marginally lower than, roughly double, three times as many as, far outnumbered, in contrast to |
| Highest / lowest | the highest figure, peaked at, reached a maximum of, the lowest proportion, the least popular, bottomed out at |
| Proportion / share | accounted for a third, made up half of, a significant proportion, a small fraction, one in five, the majority of |
| Similarity | a similar pattern, likewise, in the same way, comparable figures, broadly in line with |
| Time span | over the period, throughout the decade, within a span of five years, by the end of the period |
In Task 1 you don't have to write every figure; select the most striking comparisons and extremes. "Data selection" (which data you foreground) also raises the Task Achievement score. When you do give a number, soften it with approximation words (approximately, just over).
|---|---|
| Görüş bildirme | In my view; I firmly believe that; I am convinced that; While I acknowledge…, I would argue… |
| Sıralama/ekleme | To begin with; First and foremost; Furthermore; Moreover; Equally important |
| Neden-sonuç | gives rise to; leads to; stems from; owing to; as a result / consequently |
| Örnek verme | For instance; To illustrate; A case in point is; Take, for example, the case of… |
| Zıtlık/ödün | However; Nevertheless; Admittedly; It could be argued that; Despite this |
| Hedging (ölçülülük) | tend to; are likely to; may; to some extent; arguably; in many cases |
| Sonuç | In conclusion; On balance; Weighing up both sides; The evidence suggests that |
Bu öbekleri gerçek cümlelere yerleştirmeden ezberlemek en yaygın Task 2 hatasıdır; öbek yalnızca fikirlerin arasındaki mantık köprüsüdür, kendisi bir fikir değildir. Neden-sonuç sırasındaki stem from ile lead to ayrımına dikkat et: stem from bir sorunun kökenini geriye doğru işaret eder (this problem stems from poverty), lead to ise ileriye, sonuca bakar. Türk öğrencinin bir başka tipik hatası, görüş bildirirken her cümleye I think koymaktır; oysa While I acknowledge…, I would argue… kalıbı hem karşı görüşü tanıdığını hem kendi konumunu koruduğunu gösterir ve bu "dengeli argüman" tam da Band 7 Task Response ölçütünün istediğidir. Aşağıdaki örnekler her işlevi bağlamda gösteriyor:
Değerlendiriciler mutlak iddia (This will solve the problem) yerine ölçülü iddiayı (This may, to some extent, reduce the problem) ödüllendirir. Hedging hem daha akademiktir hem aşırı genellemeyi önler. Türk öğrencilerin çoğu tam tersini yapar: Everyone knows that…, It is a fact that…, All people… gibi mutlak ifadeler kullanır. Bu ifadeler hem kanıtsız hem savunulamaz olduğu için puan düşürür. Many people, in most cases, tends to, is likely to gibi ölçülü kalıplarla değiştir.
İşlevsel öbek yalnızca bir bağlantıdır; asıl puan onun ardından gelen somut fikirdan gelir. Furthermore, it is important deyip cümleyi orada bırakmak boş bir kalıp yığınıdır. Öbeği her zaman gerçek bir gerekçe, örnek veya sonuçla doldur: Furthermore, subsidising public transport would ease congestion by giving commuters a viable alternative to driving. Değerlendirici kalıbı değil, kalıbın taşıdığı fikri ödüllendirir.
In Task 2, vocabulary is grouped by function: expressing an opinion, sequencing, cause-effect, contrast, hedging, conclusion. While in Task 1 the vocabulary is determined by what you see (the graph), in Task 2 it is determined by what you do (build an argument, object, give an example); so collecting phrases by function rather than by theme is far more efficient — because whatever topic comes up, you have to state an opinion, give a reason and reach a conclusion. The Turkish student's typical weakness is either not using these functional phrases at all and leaving sentences dry, or the opposite — sticking a Moreover, Furthermore at the start of every sentence and making it artificial; both lower the tone. Used well, these phrases are the backbone of your ideas: they carry the reader smoothly from one thought to the next and give your essay the "logical flow" Band 7 demands.
| Function | Phrases (English) |
|---|---|
| Expressing opinion | In my view; I firmly believe that; I am convinced that; While I acknowledge…, I would argue… |
| Sequencing/addition | To begin with; First and foremost; Furthermore; Moreover; Equally important |
| Cause-effect | gives rise to; leads to; stems from; owing to; as a result / consequently |
| Giving examples | For instance; To illustrate; A case in point is; Take, for example, the case of… |
| Contrast/concession | However; Nevertheless; Admittedly; It could be argued that; Despite this |
| Hedging (moderation) | tend to; are likely to; may; to some extent; arguably; in many cases |
| Conclusion | In conclusion; On balance; Weighing up both sides; The evidence suggests that |
Memorising these phrases without placing them in real sentences is the most common Task 2 error; a phrase is only a logical bridge between ideas, not an idea in itself. Note the distinction between stem from and lead to in the cause-effect row: stem from points backwards to the origin of a problem (this problem stems from poverty), while lead to looks forward to a result. Another typical Turkish-student error is putting I think in every sentence when expressing an opinion; whereas the template While I acknowledge…, I would argue… shows both that you recognise the opposing view and that you hold your own position, and this "balanced argument" is exactly what the Band 7 Task Response criterion wants. The examples below show each function in context:
Examiners reward a measured claim (This may, to some extent, reduce the problem) over an absolute claim (This will solve the problem). Hedging is both more academic and prevents over-generalisation. Most Turkish students do the opposite: they use absolute expressions like Everyone knows that…, It is a fact that…, All people…. These lower marks because they are both unsupported and indefensible. Replace them with measured patterns like Many people, in most cases, tends to, is likely to.
A functional phrase is only a link; the real marks come from the concrete idea that follows it. Saying Furthermore, it is important and stopping there is a heap of empty template. Always fill the phrase with a real reason, example or result: Furthermore, subsidising public transport would ease congestion by giving commuters a viable alternative to driving. The examiner rewards not the phrase but the idea it carries.
| to instil values | değerleri aşılamak |
| soaring tuition fees | fırlayan okul ücretleri |
| to broaden horizons | ufku genişletmek |
| academic achievement | akademik başarı |
| lifelong learning | yaşam boyu öğrenme |
Bu ailenin belkemiği rote learning ve critical thinking skills karşıtlığıdır: neredeyse her eğitim sorusu bir yerde bu iki kutup arasında konumlanır, dolayısıyla ikisini bir cümlede karşı karşıya koyabilmek sana hazır bir argüman iskeleti verir. to instil values öbeğindeki fiil de dikkat ister; Türkçe "aşılamak" fiili öğrenciyi to inject gibi yanlış bir eşe itebilir, oysa değer, alışkanlık ve disiplin gibi soyut şeyleri "yavaş yavaş yerleştirmenin" doğal fiili instil'dir (to instil discipline / a sense of responsibility). a well-rounded education ise tek başına bir kavramı karşılayan güçlü bir sıfat+isim öbeğidir: "her yönden gelişmiş, dengeli" bir eğitimi anlatır ve a good education gibi belirsiz bir ifadeyi tek hamlede Band 7 tonuna taşır.
| digital literacy | dijital okuryazarlık |
| excessive screen time | aşırı ekran süresi |
| the automation of jobs | işlerin otomasyonu |

| carbon footprint | karbon ayak izi |
| renewable energy sources | yenilenebilir enerji kaynakları |
| to deplete natural resources | doğal kaynakları tüketmek |
| to preserve biodiversity | biyoçeşitliliği korumak |
| sustainable development | sürdürülebilir kalkınma |
| greenhouse gas emissions | sera gazı salımları |
| to offset emissions | salımları dengelemek/telafi etmek |

| public healthcare system | kamu sağlık sistemi |
| to put a strain on hospitals | hastaneleri zorlamak/yormak |
| life expectancy | ortalama yaşam süresi |
| to raise health awareness | sağlık bilincini artırmak |
Sağlık temasının en verimli öbeği a sedentary lifestyle'dır (hareketsiz yaşam): tek bir sıfat, "insanların çok oturması, az hareket etmesi" gibi uzun bir açıklamayı yerine getirir ve obeziteden kalp hastalığına kadar birçok argümanın çıkış noktasıdır. to put a strain on hospitals öbeği ise metaforik bir collocation'dır: strain "gerginlik, yük" demektir ve sağlık sistemi, ekonomi, ilişkiler gibi soyut yapıların "zorlanmasını" anlatmak için put a strain on kalıbıyla kullanılır — Türk öğrencinin sık kurduğu make hospitals tired gibi birebir çeviriler burada tamamen yapay kalır. preventive measures ile to alleviate symptoms arasındaki mantık ayrımı da puana döner: biri hastalık çıkmadan önce alınan tedbiri (önleme), öteki hastalık çıktıktan sonra belirtiyi hafifletmeyi (tedavi) anlatır; bu ikisini doğru yerde kullanmak fikrinin de netliğini gösterir.
| to act as a deterrent | caydırıcı olmak |
| rehabilitation programmes | rehabilitasyon programları |
| to reoffend | tekrar suç işlemek |
| the root causes of crime | suçun kök nedenleri |
| law-abiding citizens | yasalara uyan yurttaşlar |

| to reintegrate into society | topluma yeniden kazandırmak |
| petty crime | küçük çaplı suç |
| job security | iş güvencesi |
| a healthy work-life balance | sağlıklı iş-yaşam dengesi |
| a competitive job market | rekabetçi iş piyasası |
| to boost productivity | verimliliği artırmak |
| disposable income | harcanabilir gelir |
| to climb the career ladder | kariyer basamaklarını tırmanmak |
| remote working | uzaktan çalışma |
| to make ends meet | geçinmek/iki yakayı bir araya getirmek |
| a stagnant economy | durgun bir ekonomi |

| to immerse oneself in a culture | bir kültüre gömülmek/dalmak |
| off the beaten track | bilinmedik/turistik olmayan yer |
| sustainable tourism | sürdürülebilir turizm |
| to put a place on the map | bir yeri tanınır kılmak |
Bu cümle iki ayrı temadan (Education + Work) birer collocation'ı tek fikirde birleştiriyor: rote learning / critical thinking skills ve a competitive job market. Temaları izole öğrenip sınavda köprü kurmak, dağarcığın gerçekten esnek olduğunu gösterir.
IELTS Task 2 and Speaking Part 3 have rotated a limited set of themes for years: education, technology, environment, health, crime, work, society and travel. So smart preparation means building a collocation family for each theme in advance. Below, for each of eight themes, there are 8-10 core collocations, their English meaning and a natural example sentence. The aim is not to memorise them but to absorb them enough to produce your own sentences for each theme. Whatever the topic in the exam, the backbone of that theme is ready.
| rote learning | learning by memorisation |
| critical thinking skills | skills of critical thinking |
| a well-rounded education | a broad, balanced education |
| vocational training | occupational/job training |
| to instil values | to implant/impart values |
| soaring tuition fees | rapidly rising tuition fees |
| to broaden horizons | to widen one's outlook |
| academic achievement | academic success |
| lifelong learning | learning throughout life |
The backbone of this family is the contrast between rote learning and critical thinking skills: almost every education question sits somewhere between these two poles, so being able to put them against each other in one sentence gives you a ready-made argument skeleton. The verb in to instil values also needs care; the Turkish verb for "instil/implant" can push the student towards a wrong partner like to inject, whereas the natural verb for slowly settling abstract things like values, habits and discipline is instil (to instil discipline / a sense of responsibility). And a well-rounded education is a strong adjective+noun phrase that captures a whole concept alone: it describes an education "developed in every respect, balanced" and lifts a vague phrase like a good education to a Band 7 tone in a single move.
| digital literacy | digital literacy |
| excessive screen time | too much screen time |
| the automation of jobs | the automation of jobs |
| to streamline a process | to make a process more efficient |
| data privacy concerns | concerns about data privacy |
| the digital divide | the digital gap/divide |
| to stay connected | to remain in contact/connected |
| an over-reliance on devices | excessive dependence on devices |
| to bridge the gap | to close the gap |
| carbon footprint | carbon footprint |
| renewable energy sources | renewable energy sources |
| to deplete natural resources | to use up natural resources |
| to preserve biodiversity | to protect biodiversity |
| sustainable development | sustainable development |
| greenhouse gas emissions | greenhouse gas emissions |
| to offset emissions | to counterbalance/compensate for emissions |
| a pressing environmental issue | an urgent environmental problem |
| to mitigate climate change | to ease/soften climate change |
| a sedentary lifestyle | an inactive lifestyle |
| preventive measures | preventive measures |
| mental wellbeing | mental wellbeing |
| a balanced diet | a balanced diet |
| to alleviate symptoms | to ease symptoms |
| public healthcare system | public healthcare system |
| to put a strain on hospitals | to strain/burden hospitals |
| life expectancy | average life expectancy |
| to raise health awareness | to increase health awareness |
The most productive phrase in the health theme is a sedentary lifestyle: a single adjective does the work of a long explanation like "people sitting too much and moving too little", and it is the starting point of many arguments from obesity to heart disease. The phrase to put a strain on hospitals is a metaphorical collocation: strain means "tension, burden", and it is used with the pattern put a strain on to describe abstract structures like the health system, the economy or relationships being "stressed" — word-for-word translations that a Turkish student often forms, such as make hospitals tired, stay wholly artificial here. The logical distinction between preventive measures and to alleviate symptoms also pays off: one is a measure taken before illness appears (prevention), the other is easing a symptom after illness appears (treatment); using these two in the right place shows the clarity of your idea too.
| to act as a deterrent | to serve as a deterrent |
| rehabilitation programmes | rehabilitation programmes |
| to reoffend | to commit a crime again |
| the root causes of crime | the underlying causes of crime |
| law-abiding citizens | citizens who obey the law |
| a lenient sentence | a light/mild sentence |
| to reintegrate into society | to bring back into society |
| petty crime | minor/small-scale crime |
| job security | job security |
| a healthy work-life balance | a healthy work-life balance |
| a competitive job market | a competitive job market |
| to boost productivity | to increase productivity |
| disposable income | disposable income |
| to climb the career ladder | to move up the career ladder |
| remote working | remote working |
| to make ends meet | to get by / cover one's living costs |
| a stagnant economy | a stagnant economy |
Register differences are especially visible in this family: to make ends meet (to get by financially) is an idiomatic, everyday phrase — perfectly natural in Speaking and a plus, but in an academic Task 2 essay it lowers the tone slightly; there, a neutral equivalent like to cover basic living costs is safer. By contrast, disposable income and job security are technical-academic terms and stand firm in both skills. to climb the career ladder is a vivid metaphor: it pictures career progress as climbing a ladder and adds far more idiomatic colour than a flat phrase like to get a better job. Advice to the student: as you learn these phrases, note beside each one "Speaking, Writing, or both?" — because the words of the same theme carry different weight in different skills.
| to allocate funds | to allocate resources/funds |
| public spending | public spending |
| social cohesion | social cohesion |
| to impose regulations | to introduce regulations |
| the gap between rich and poor | the rich-poor gap |
| to raise living standards | to raise living standards |
| a sense of community | a sense of belonging/community |
| to tackle inequality | to combat inequality |
| to broaden one's horizons | to widen one's outlook |
| a tourist destination | a tourist destination |
| mass tourism | mass tourism |
| to boost the local economy | to invigorate the local economy |
| cultural heritage | cultural heritage |
| to immerse oneself in a culture | to immerse oneself in a culture |
| off the beaten track | away from the usual tourist spots |
| sustainable tourism | sustainable tourism |
| to put a place on the map | to make a place well known |
This sentence combines one collocation each from two separate themes (Education + Work) in a single idea: rote learning / critical thinking skills and a competitive job market. Learning themes in isolation and then building a bridge between them in the exam shows that your vocabulary is genuinely flexible.
Register, kelimenin "biçimsellik tonu"dur: aynı fikri anlatan iki kelimeden biri resmî/akademik, öteki gündelik/sohbet tonundadır. IELTS'te en sık yapılan gizli hata, Writing'e Speaking kelimesi koymak (fazla gündelik) ya da Speaking'de kitabî konuşmaktır (fazla yapay). Doğru kelime yalnızca "doğru anlam" değil, o beceriye uygun ton demektir.
| Gündelik (Speaking'e uygun) | Akademik (Writing'e uygun) |
|---|---|
| kids | children / youngsters |
| a lot of / lots of | a great deal of / numerous |
| get | obtain / acquire / receive |
| big | significant / substantial |
| stuff / things | factors / aspects / elements |
| go up / go down | rise / decline |
| find out | discover / establish |
| a bit | slightly / to some extent |
Denemende don't, isn't gibi kısaltmalar, you ile okura seslenme, And / But ile cümleye başlama ve a lot of, kids, get gibi gündelik kelimeler tonu düşürür. Reading ve Listening'de ise register bilgisi anlamı çözmene yardım eder: akademik metin resmî eşi (obtain), günlük diyalog gündelik eşi (get) kullanır — ton, cevabı bulmanın ipucudur.
Writing'de yukarı (resmî tona) ayarla, Speaking'de doğala ayarla; Reading ve Listening'de tonu okuma ipucu olarak kullan. Aynı kelime hazinesini taşırsın ama her beceride tonunu değiştirirsin — işte esneklik budur.
Register is the "formality tone" of a word: of two words with the same meaning, one is formal/academic, the other everyday/conversational. The most common hidden error in IELTS is putting a Speaking word into Writing (too casual) or speaking bookishly in Speaking (too artificial). The right word is not only "the right meaning" but the right tone for that skill.
| Everyday (suits Speaking) | Academic (suits Writing) |
|---|---|
| kids | children / youngsters |
| a lot of / lots of | a great deal of / numerous |
| get | obtain / acquire / receive |
| big | significant / substantial |
| stuff / things | factors / aspects / elements |
| go up / go down | rise / decline |
| find out | discover / establish |
| a bit | slightly / to some extent |
In your essay, contractions like don't, isn't, addressing the reader with you, starting a sentence with And / But, and everyday words like a lot of, kids, get lower the tone. In Reading and Listening, on the other hand, knowledge of register helps you decode meaning: an academic text uses the formal equivalent (obtain), a casual dialogue the everyday one (get) — tone is a clue to finding the answer.
In Writing, tune up (to a formal tone); in Speaking, tune to natural; in Reading and Listening, use tone as a reading clue. You carry the same vocabulary but change its tone in each skill — that is flexibility.
Speaking'de Band 7'nin eşiği "doğal ve deyimsel dil" (natural and idiomatic language) kullanmaktır. Bu, ezber deyim yağdırmak değildir; birkaç deyimi, phrasal verb'ü ve isabetli az-yaygın kelimeyi doğru anda, doğru bağlamda kullanmaktır. Aşağıdaki üç bloğu ezberleyip zorlamak yerine, kendi konuşmana bir-iki tanesini doğal yerleştirmeyi hedefle.
| to be over the moon | çok sevinçli/mutlu olmak |
| to hit the books | ders çalışmaya koyulmak |
| once in a blue moon | çok nadiren |
| to cost an arm and a leg | çok pahalı olmak |
| to be on the same page | aynı fikirde/hemfikir olmak |
| a piece of cake | çok kolay bir iş |
| to think outside the box | alışılmışın dışında düşünmek |
| to get the hang of something | bir şeyin ustalığını kapmak |
| to be worlds apart | arada dağlar kadar fark olmak |
| to take something with a pinch of salt | bir şeye ihtiyatla yaklaşmak |
| to be second to none | eşi benzeri olmamak, en iyisi olmak |
| to keep an open mind | açık fikirli kalmak |
Deyimlerin puanı, ancak doğru bağlamda ve doğru anda çıktığında gelir; listeden rastgele bir deyimi cümleye sıkıştırmak tam tersi etki yapar. to take something with a pinch of salt öbeğine bak: "bir şeye ihtiyatla, temkinle yaklaşmak" demektir ve tam yeri, bir bilgi kaynağının güvenilirliğini tartıştığın andır — I read it online, so I take those statistics with a pinch of salt. Bunu bir mutluluk anlatırken kullanmak anlamsız kaçar, yani deyimi bilmek yetmez, hangi durumda tetiklendiğini bilmek gerekir. once in a blue moon ("çok nadiren") özellikle Speaking Part 1'de sıklık soran sorulara (How often do you…?) doğal bir cevap kalıbıdır: I go to the cinema once in a blue moon these days. to be on the same page ise gündelik ama iş/işbirliği bağlamına oturur; akademik Writing'e taşınmaz ama konuşmada fikir birliğini anlatırken son derece doğaldır. Kural: bir konuşmaya iki-üç deyimden fazlasını sıkıştırma; azı, yerinde ve akıcı olanı, çoğu ve zorlanmışı her zaman geçer.
| to come up with (an idea) | (fikir) bulup ortaya koymak |
| to look into (something) | araştırmak, incelemek |
| to get by | idare etmek, geçinmek |
| to put off | ertelemek |
| to take up (a hobby) | (hobiye) başlamak |
| to bring about (change) | (değişime) yol açmak |
| to carry out (research) | (araştırma) yürütmek |
| to cut down on | azaltmak, kısmak |
| to figure out | çözmek, kavramak |
| to keep up with | ayak uydurmak, takip etmek |
| to end up (doing) | sonunda (yapar) hâle gelmek |
| to look forward to | dört gözle beklemek |
Not: Phrasal verb'ler Speaking'de doğal ve güçlüdür; Writing'de ise çoğunun tek-kelimelik resmî eşi tercih edilir (look into → investigate, bring about → cause, cut down on → reduce).
The convenience of smartphones comes at the expense of real conversation. cümlesindeki at the expense of tam da bunun örneğidir: tek bir isabetli öbek, üç tane yanlış yerleştirilmiş "büyük" kelimeden değerlidir. Emin olmadığın kelimeyi denemende değil, önce kendi cümlelerinde deneyerek eşini test et; sınav, kelime dağarcığını denemek için değil, sağlam bildiğini göstermek için yerdir.
In Speaking, the threshold of Band 7 is using "natural and idiomatic language". This does not mean pouring out memorised idioms; it means using a few idioms, phrasal verbs and apt less-common words at the right moment, in the right context. Rather than memorising the three blocks below and forcing them, aim to place one or two of them naturally into your own speech.
| to be over the moon | to be extremely happy/delighted |
| to hit the books | to start studying hard |
| once in a blue moon | very rarely |
| to cost an arm and a leg | to be very expensive |
| to be on the same page | to be in agreement |
| a piece of cake | a very easy task |
| to think outside the box | to think in an unconventional way |
| to get the hang of something | to get the knack of something |
| to be worlds apart | to be vastly different |
| to take something with a pinch of salt | to treat something with caution/scepticism |
| to be second to none | to be unmatched, the best |
| to keep an open mind | to stay open-minded |
An idiom earns marks only when it comes out in the right context and at the right moment; squeezing a random idiom from the list into a sentence has the opposite effect. Look at to take something with a pinch of salt: it means "to approach something with caution/scepticism", and its exact place is when you are discussing the reliability of an information source — I read it online, so I take those statistics with a pinch of salt. Using it while describing happiness makes no sense, so knowing the idiom is not enough; you must know the situation that triggers it. once in a blue moon ("very rarely") is an especially natural answer to frequency questions in Speaking Part 1 (How often do you…?): I go to the cinema once in a blue moon these days. to be on the same page is everyday but sits in a work/collaboration context; it doesn't carry over into academic Writing, but is perfectly natural in speech when describing agreement. The rule: don't cram more than two or three idioms into a conversation; a few, placed well and fluently, always beat many that are forced.
| to come up with (an idea) | to think up / produce (an idea) |
| to look into (something) | to investigate, examine |
| to get by | to manage, cope, get along |
| to put off | to postpone |
| to take up (a hobby) | to start (a hobby) |
| to bring about (change) | to cause (change) |
| to carry out (research) | to conduct (research) |
| to cut down on | to reduce, cut back on |
| to figure out | to work out, understand |
| to keep up with | to keep pace with, follow |
| to end up (doing) | to end up (doing) in the end |
| to look forward to | to eagerly await |
Note: Phrasal verbs are natural and strong in Speaking; in Writing, the single-word formal equivalent of most is preferred (look into → investigate, bring about → cause, cut down on → reduce). So you say the same idea with a different word in each skill — this is register flexibility.
Band 7+ expects "less common vocabulary", but this does not mean forcing in a memorised fancy word. The biggest trap is using a word whose meaning you don't fully know (plethora, myriad, ubiquitous) with the wrong collocation and breaking the sentence. The examiner spots this instantly, and it does more harm than a plain word used correctly. The rule: don't use a word you're unsure of. One apt nuanced word is worth more than three misplaced "big" words.
Let's not leave the principle abstract; here is what the examiner actually hears:
The difference is not "don't use less-common words"; it is "if you do, choose one you fully command in meaning and partner". The at the expense of in The convenience of smartphones comes at the expense of real conversation. is exactly this: one apt phrase is worth more than three misplaced "big" words. Test the partner of a word you're unsure of first in your own sentences, not in the exam; the exam is a place to show what you know solidly, not to trial your vocabulary.
Tek bir fikir — "arabalar kirliliğe sebep oluyor" — üç bantta nasıl yazılır?
| Band | Cümle |
|---|---|
| 5 | Cars make a lot of pollution and this is a big bad problem for cities. |
| 7 | Private cars produce significant pollution, which has become a serious problem in many urban areas. |
| 9 | Heavy reliance on private vehicles gives rise to considerable air pollution, a pressing issue that increasingly threatens the liveability of major cities. |
İkinci bir örnek — fikir: "teknoloji insanları yalnızlaştırıyor":
| 5 | Technology makes people alone and this is a bad thing for society. |
| 7 | Excessive use of technology can make people feel isolated, which may weaken social bonds. |
| 9 | An over-reliance on digital communication risks eroding face-to-face interaction, gradually undermining the social bonds that hold communities together. |
Band 5'ten 7'ye geçiş genelde "belirsiz kelimeyi at, doğru collocation'ı koy"dur; 7'den 9'a geçiş ise "sıradan doğru kelimeyi, tam o bağlama en incelikli oturan kelimeyle değiştir"dir.
How is a single idea — "cars cause pollution" — written at three bands?
| Band | Sentence |
A second example — the idea: "technology isolates people":
| 5 | Technology makes people alone and this is a bad thing for society. |
| 7 | Excessive use of technology can make people feel isolated, which may weaken social bonds. |
| 9 | An over-reliance on digital communication risks eroding face-to-face interaction, gradually undermining the social bonds that hold communities together. |
Notice: the Band 9 sentence is high not because it is longer or "harder" but because every word is perfectly placed. erode, undermine, over-reliance all sit with the right collocation and the right tone. This is "placing words", not "piling words" — and the difference between the two determines the whole band. The shared lesson of the two examples: the climb comes not from adding more words to a sentence but from replacing the words that carry the idea with more apt ones. Moving from Band 5 to 7 is usually "drop the vague word, put in the right collocation"; moving from 7 to 9 is "replace the ordinarily-correct word with the one that sits most subtly in that exact context". So when you want to raise a sentence you've written, think first not about lengthening it but about whether each word passes the question "is this the most apt one?"
The invisible weapon of Band 8-9 is connotation — the positive/negative emotional tone a word carries alongside its dictionary meaning. Words that look synonymous carry different connotations; a wrongly-toned synonym, even if technically "correct", breaks the sentence.
| Neutral/positive | Negative connotation | Difference |
|---|---|---|
| thrifty (careful with money) | stingy (miserly) | both mean "spending little" but one is praise, one is blame |
| determined (resolute) | stubborn (obstinate) | the same behaviour, opposite value judgement |
| childlike (innocent, pure) | childish (immature) | one suffix, wholly opposite connotation |
| curious (inquisitive) | nosy (prying) | the positive vs negative face of curiosity |
You sense a word's connotation not from the dictionary definition but from the example sentences it appears in. When learning a new synonym, ask yourself: "If I use this word for a person, am I praising them or criticising them?" If unsure, prefer the known word with a neutral connotation — precision comes before show once again.
strong rain, do a decision. Öbek olarak öğren, kelime kelime çevirme.
good, bad, important, thing, a lot. Bunlar Band 5 işaretidir; isabetli kelimeyle değiştir.
informations, advices, researches yanlış. Bunlar sayılamaz; Dilbilgisi Doğruluğu sayfasına bak.
Ezberlenmiş nadir kelimeyi yanlış bağlamda kullanmak. Emin olmadığın kelimeyi kullanma; isabet gösterişten önemlidir.
kids, stuff, a lot of, don't akademik denemede uygun değil: children, aspects, many, do not.
Her cümleye Moreover/Furthermore koymak yapaylaşır.
strong rain, do a decision. Learn as a chunk, don't translate word by word.
good, bad, important, thing, a lot. These are Band 5 markers; replace with a precise word.
informations, advices, researches are wrong. These are uncountable; see the Grammatical Accuracy page.
Using a memorised rare word in the wrong context. Don't use a word you're unsure of; precision matters more than show.
kids, stuff, a lot of, don't are not appropriate in an academic essay: children, aspects, many, do not.
Putting Moreover/Furthermore at the start of every sentence becomes artificial. Use a connector for a genuine logical transition.
The common root of these errors is the same: learning a word out of context. The solution is also common — record every new word not on its own but together with a sentence it naturally appears in and its typical partners. Read an essay you've written a day later "like a foreign reader" and ask these three questions: Is this word really the most apt, or is there a more concrete equivalent? Does the register fit the tone of the essay? Does this connector mark a genuine logical relationship? A text that passes these three filters almost always earns a higher Lexical Resource score than one full of memorised, showy words. Remember: the exam rewards not the hardest word you know, but the word that carries the idea most aptly.
A vocabulary is not built overnight; and once built, it needs maintenance. For your brain to carry a word from "I've seen it" to "I can use it", two things are needed: spaced repetition (seeing the word again just as you begin to forget it) and production (building your own sentence with it). The rhythm below combines the two.
To memorise the raw words, use the site's flashcard system: Vocabulary study (IELTS filter) →. You study IELTS-tagged words with an example sentence, learned tracking and spaced repetition. 8-10 new words a day + review of previous days — sustaining the rhythm without breaking it is far more effective than loading many words at once.
