Aynı fikri iki farklı ceketle söyleyebilirsin. Konuşma ceketi: "Scientists found out that this is a big thing and it makes a lot of stuff happen." Akademik ceket: "Researchers established that this is a significant factor which produces considerable effects." İkisi de doğru İngilizce; ama biri kahve masasına, diğeri makaleye aittir. Academic Word List (AWL), işte o akademik ceketi diken kelime deposudur.
AWL, dilbilimci Averil Coxhead'in 2000 yılında 3.5 milyon kelimelik akademik metin bütüncesinden derlediği, 570 kelime ailesinden oluşan bir listedir.
Neden zor?
- Kelime ailesi (word family) sorunu: "analyse" fiilini bilmek yetmez; "analysis" (isim), "analytical" (sıfat), "analyst" (kişi), "analytically" (zarf) biçimlerini ve hangisinin nereye geçtiğini de bilmek gerekir. Türk öğrenci sık sık yanlış biçimi seçer ("an analyse of the data" ✗ → "an analysis of the data" ✓).
- Eşdizim (collocation) sorunu: Kelimeyi doğru seçmek yetmez, yanına doğru kelimeyi koymak gerekir. "do research" gündelik, "conduct research" akademiktir; "make an experiment" yanlıştır, "carry out / conduct an experiment" doğrudur.
Her cümleye akademik kelime tıkıştırmak metni jargon'a çevirir; iyi yazı AWL'yi yalnızca gerektiği yerde kullanır.
You can say the same idea in two different jackets. The conversational jacket: "Scientists found out that this is a big thing and it makes a lot of stuff happen." The academic jacket: "Researchers established that this is a significant factor which produces considerable effects." Both are correct English; but one belongs at the coffee table, the other in an article. The Academic Word List (AWL) is precisely the word store that tailors that academic jacket.
The AWL is a list of 570 word families that the linguist Averil Coxhead compiled in 2000 from a 3.5-million-word corpus of academic text. The critical point: these words do not belong to a single field (medicine, law, engineering); they are cross-disciplinary — that is, you meet them in a biology article, in a sociology assignment, and in an economics report alike. analyse, concept, data, establish, factor, method, process, research, significant, theory are only a few of them.
The AWL is not a grammar topic but a resource and production topic — which is why it is in the "Resource & Production" category. Its function in one sentence: to raise register. Register is the level of formality/appropriateness of a text. In academic writing, everyday words like "get, big, thing, a lot of" make the text look childish and loose; AWL words carry the same meaning but make the text mature, controlled and convincing. This topic is directly intertwined with Academic Register.
Is there a Turkish parallel?
There is, and it is very familiar to the learner. Turkish also has two registers. Everyday: "Bu iş çok büyük bir şey, bir sürü sonucu var." Academic: "Bu olgu önemli bir etkendir ve çok sayıda sonuç doğurmaktadır." The Turkish olgu, etken, doğurmak, çok sayıda, nitekim, dolayısıyla, ele almak, ortaya koymak are exactly the Turkish equivalents of the AWL. In other words, the learner already makes this distinction in their native language — they just need to build the store of equivalents in English.
Why is it hard?
- The word-family problem: knowing the verb "analyse" is not enough; you must also know the forms "analysis" (noun), "analytical" (adjective), "analyst" (person), "analytically" (adverb) and which of them goes where. Turkish learners often choose the wrong form ("an analyse of the data" ✗ → "an analysis of the data" ✓).
- The collocation problem: choosing the right word is not enough; you must place the right word next to it. "do research" is everyday, "conduct research" is academic; "make an experiment" is wrong, "carry out / conduct an experiment" is correct. These pairings are learned more through exposure than memorization.
- The overuse trap: when the learner discovers AWL words they cram them into every sentence and the text becomes ornate but odd and unreadable ("jargon"). Good academic writing uses the AWL where needed, not everywhere.
- The wrong-context trap: an AWL word found in a dictionary may not fit the context of the sentence. "significant" means both "important" and "statistically significant"; if placed in the wrong spot the sentence reads like a scientific claim.
The AWL is not a "the more the better" list. Cramming academic words into every sentence turns the text into jargon; good writing uses the AWL only where needed.
- AWL = akademik metinlerde sık geçen, alan-üstü 570 kelime ailesi (Averil Coxhead, 2000).
- Amaç: metnin register'ını (resmiyet düzeyini) yükseltmek — günlük kelimeyi akademik eşdeğeriyle değiştirmek.
- Terfi mantığı: find out → establish, big → significant, so → consequently, get → obtain, use → utilise, help → facilitate.
- Kelimeyi değil kelime ailesini öğren: analyse / analysis / analytical / analytically.
- Kelimeyi değil eşdizimi öğren: conduct research, play a role, a significant factor, draw a conclusion.
- İngiliz–Amerikan yazım farkına dikkat: analyse/analyze, behaviour/behavior, -ise/-ize.
- AWL'yi aşırı kullanma: gereğinden fazla süsleme metni jargona ve okunmaz hale çevirir.
- AWL yazıda ve akademik konuşmada işe yarar; günlük sohbette abartılı ve yapmacık durur.
- AWL, Akademik Register, Nominalizasyon ve Parafraz becerilerinin ortak yakıtıdır.
- IELTS/TOEFL/YÖKDİL yazma bölümlerinde "lexical resource" puanının çekirdeği budur.
- AWL = 570 cross-disciplinary word families that occur frequently in academic texts (Averil Coxhead, 2000).
- Aim: to raise the register (level of formality) of the text — replacing an everyday word with its academic equivalent.
- Promotion logic: find out → establish, big → significant, so → consequently, get → obtain, use → utilise, help → facilitate.
- Learn not the word but the word family: analyse / analysis / analytical / analytically.
- Learn not the word but the collocation: conduct research, play a role, a significant factor, draw a conclusion.
- Watch the British–American spelling difference: analyse/analyze, behaviour/behavior, -ise/-ize.
- Do not overuse the AWL: excess decoration turns the text into jargon and makes it unreadable.
- The AWL works in writing and in academic speech; in everyday chat it sounds exaggerated and artificial.
- The AWL is the shared fuel of Academic Register, Nominalization and Paraphrasing.
- In the IELTS/TOEFL/YÖKDİL writing sections this is the core of the "lexical resource" score.
AWL bir gramer yapısı olmadığı için burada "olumlu/olumsuz/soru" yerine, akademik kelimeyi doğru kurmanın üç mekaniği vardır: (1) günlük kelimeyi akademik eşdeğerle terfi ettirmek, (2) doğru kelime ailesi biçimini seçmek, (3) doğru eşdizimi kurmak. Üçü birden doğru olmadan cümle akademik durmaz.
1 · Terfi
Günlük kelimeyi AWL eşdeğeriyle değiştir: find out → establish.
2 · Aile
Doğru biçimi seç: analyse / analysis / analytical.
3 · Eşdizim
Doğru komşuyu koy: conduct research — do research değil.
1) Terfi: Günlük → Akademik
Formül: [günlük kelime] → [AWL eşdeğeri], ama anlam ve bağlam korunarak. Terfi otomatik değildir; her günlük kelimenin bağlama göre birden çok akademik karşılığı olabilir.
| Günlük | Akademik (AWL) | Örnek eşdizim |
|---|---|---|
| find out | establish, determine | establish a link, determine the cause |
| big / a lot of | significant, considerable, substantial | a significant increase |
| so | consequently, therefore, thus | consequently, prices fell |
| look at | examine, investigate, analyse | examine the evidence |
| get | obtain, acquire, derive | obtain data, acquire skills |
| show | demonstrate, reveal, indicate | the results demonstrate |
| use | utilise, employ, apply | employ a method |
| help | facilitate, aid, contribute to | facilitate learning |
2) Kelime ailesi biçimini seçmek
Formül: cümledeki dilbilgisel yuva (isim mi, fiil mi, sıfat mı?) → o yuvaya uyan aile biçimi. Aynı kök, yuvaya göre biçim değiştirir.
| Fiil | İsim | Sıfat | Zarf / Kişi |
|---|---|---|---|
| analyse (BrE) / analyze (AmE) | analysis / analyses (çoğul) | analytical | analytically / analyst |
| significy yok → signify | significance | significant | significantly |
| establish | establishment | established | — |
3) Eşdizimi kurmak
Formül: AWL kelimesi + onunla birlikte yürüyen sabit kelime. Eşdizim yanlışsa cümle "İngiliz kulağına" yanlış gelir, gramer doğru olsa bile.
| İhtiyaç | Doğru seçim | Kaçın |
|---|---|---|
| "önemli" | significant / considerable | big, huge |
| "göstermek" | demonstrate / reveal / indicate | show (aşırı sık) |
| "yapmak (araştırma)" | conduct / carry out | make, do (zayıf) |
| "sonuç olarak" | consequently / therefore | so |
Since the AWL is not a grammar structure, instead of "positive/negative/question" there are three mechanics of building an academic word correctly: (1) promoting the everyday word to an academic equivalent, (2) choosing the correct word-family form, (3) building the correct collocation. Without all three being correct, the sentence does not look academic.
1 · Promotion
Replace the everyday word with an AWL equivalent: find out → establish.
2 · Family
Choose the right form: analyse / analysis / analytical.
3 · Collocation
Place the right neighbour: conduct research — not do research.
1) Promotion: Everyday → Academic
Formula: [everyday word] → [AWL equivalent], but preserving meaning and context. Promotion is not automatic; every everyday word may have more than one academic counterpart depending on context.
| Everyday | Academic (AWL) | Example collocation |
|---|---|---|
| find out | establish, determine | establish a link, determine the cause |
| big / a lot of | significant, considerable, substantial | a significant increase |
| so | consequently, therefore, thus | consequently, prices fell |
| look at | examine, investigate, analyse | examine the evidence |
| get | obtain, acquire, derive | obtain data, acquire skills |
| show | demonstrate, reveal, indicate | the results demonstrate |
| use | utilise, employ, apply | employ a method |
| help | facilitate, aid, contribute to | facilitate learning |
2) Choosing the word-family form
Formula: the grammatical slot in the sentence (noun? verb? adjective?) → the family form that fits that slot. The same root changes form according to the slot.
| Verb | Noun | Adjective | Adverb / Person |
|---|---|---|---|
| analyse (BrE) / analyze (AmE) | analysis / analyses (plural) | analytical | analytically / analyst |
| no "significy" → signify | significance | significant | significantly |
| establish | establishment | established | — |
3) Building the collocation
Formula: the AWL word + the fixed word that walks with it. If the collocation is wrong, the sentence sounds wrong "to the English ear", even if the grammar is correct.
| Need | Correct choice | Avoid |
|---|---|---|
| "important" | significant / considerable | big, huge |
| "to show" | demonstrate / reveal / indicate | show (overused) |
| "to do (research)" | conduct / carry out | make, do (weak) |
| "as a result" | consequently / therefore | so |
AWL kelimeleri akademik metnin farklı işlevlerinde farklı kümeler halinde çalışır. En yaygın işlevden özele doğru gidelim.
1) Bulgu ve iddia kurma (en yaygın)
2) Neden–sonuç ve mantık bağlama
3) Yöntem ve süreç anlatma
4) Değerlendirme ve derece belirtme
AWL words work in different clusters across the different functions of an academic text. Let us go from the most common function to the specific.
1) Establishing findings and claims (most common)
2) Linking cause-effect and logic
3) Describing method and process
4) Evaluating and indicating degree
AWL bir zaman yapısı değildir, ama akademik metinde her işlev kümesinin kendi sinyal kelimeleri vardır. Bir yazı sorusunu okurken bu sinyaller sana hangi AWL kümesini kullanacağını söyler.
| İşlev | Soru sinyali | Kullanılacak AWL kümesi |
|---|---|---|
| Neden–sonuç | "why", "effect of", "leads to" | consequently, factor, contribute to, result in |
| Karşılaştırma | "compare", "differences" | similarly, in contrast, whereas, correspond |
| Süreç | "how", "process of", "stages" | procedure, phase, subsequently, method |
| Değerlendirme | "to what extent", "evaluate" | significant, considerable, arguably, imply |
| Tanım | "define", "what is" | concept, refer to, constitute, denote |
The AWL is not a tense structure, but in an academic text every function cluster has its own signal words. When reading a writing prompt, these signals tell you which AWL cluster to use.
| Function | Prompt signal | AWL cluster to use |
|---|---|---|
| Cause-effect | "why", "effect of", "leads to" | consequently, factor, contribute to, result in |
| Comparison | "compare", "differences" | similarly, in contrast, whereas, correspond |
| Process | "how", "process of", "stages" | procedure, phase, subsequently, method |
| Evaluation | "to what extent", "evaluate" | significant, considerable, arguably, imply |
| Definition | "define", "what is" | concept, refer to, constitute, denote |
AWL kelimelerinin çoğu birbirine yakın görünür ama ince farkları vardır. Bu farkları bilmek, C1–C2 düzeyinde "kelime kullanabiliyor" ile "kelimeyi ustaca kullanıyor" arasındaki çizgidir.
Derece nüansı: büyük ne kadar büyük?
Kesinlik nüansı: ne kadar iddialı?
Most AWL words look similar to one another but have fine differences. Knowing these differences is the line at C1–C2 level between "can use the word" and "uses the word masterfully".
Nuance of degree: how big is big?
Nuance of certainty: how assertive?
Türkçe düşünen öğrencinin en büyük tuzağı, akademik bir Türkçe kelimeyi doğrudan İngilizceye çevirip yanlış eşdizim veya yanlış kelime seçmektir. Türkçe akademik dil, İngilizce akademik dile birebir oturmaz.
- Türkçede "bir araştırma yapmak" deriz; İngilizcede "make a research" YANLIŞ — "conduct/carry out research" (research sayılamaz, "a" almaz).
- Türkçede "önemli bir problem" → "an important problem" doğrudur ama akademikte çoğu zaman "a significant/major issue" daha yerindedir.
- Türkçede "bilim insanları buldu ki..." → "scientists found that" değil, akademikte "researchers established/found that".
- Türkçede fiili tercih ederiz ("analiz etti"); İngilizce akademik dil çoğu zaman adlaştırır (Nominalizasyon): "conducted an analysis of".
The biggest trap for the Turkish-thinking learner is translating an academic Turkish word directly into English and choosing the wrong collocation or the wrong word. Academic Turkish does not map one-to-one onto academic English.
- In Turkish we say "bir araştırma yapmak"; in English "make a research" is WRONG — "conduct/carry out research" (research is uncountable, takes no "a").
- In Turkish "önemli bir problem" → "an important problem" is correct, but in academic writing "a significant/major issue" is often more apt.
- In Turkish "bilim insanları buldu ki..." → not "scientists found that", but in academic writing "researchers established/found that".
- In Turkish we prefer the verb ("analiz etti"); academic English often nominalizes (Nominalization): "conducted an analysis of".
AWL tek başına çalışmaz; akademik yazının birkaç komşu becerisiyle iç içedir. Karıştırılmaması için farkı netleştirelim.
| Konu | Ne yapar | AWL'den farkı |
|---|---|---|
| Academic Word List (AWL) | Doğru akademik KELİMEYİ sağlar (kelime deposu). | Malzemedir: hangi tuğlalar. |
| Akademik Register | Metnin genel resmiyet TONUNU kurar (kısaltma yok, kişiselleşme yok). | Çatıdır: tuğlaları nasıl dizeceğin. |
| Nominalizasyon | Fiil/sıfatı isme çevirip yoğunluk kurar (analyse→analysis). | AWL kelimelerini adlaştırma tekniği. |
| Parafraz | Aynı fikri farklı kelimelerle yeniden ifade eder. | AWL, parafraz için kelime kaynağı sağlar. |
The AWL does not work on its own; it is intertwined with several neighbouring skills of academic writing. Let us clarify the difference so they are not confused.
| Topic | What it does | Difference from AWL |
|---|---|---|
| Academic Word List (AWL) | Provides the correct academic WORD (the word store). | It is the material: which bricks. |
| Academic Register | Establishes the overall formality TONE of the text (no contractions, no personalization). | It is the frame: how you arrange the bricks. |
| Nominalization | Turns a verb/adjective into a noun and builds density (analyse→analysis). | The technique of nominalizing AWL words. |
| Paraphrasing | Restates the same idea in different words. | The AWL provides the word source for paraphrasing. |
AWL kurallarının birkaç önemli istisnası ve özel durumu vardır. Bunları bilmemek, aşırı-düzeltme (hypercorrection) hatalarına yol açar.
- Her yerde AWL kullanılmaz: Basit bir fikri süslü kelimeyle söylemek her zaman daha iyi değildir. "utilise a pen" saçmadır; kalem için "use" doğrudur.
Bunlar "a" almaz ve çoğullaşmaz — "researches, evidences, informations" hepsi yanlıştır.
The AWL rules have a few important exceptions and special cases. Not knowing them leads to hypercorrection errors.
- The AWL is not used everywhere: saying a simple idea with an ornate word is not always better. "utilise a pen" is absurd; for a pen "use" is correct. The AWL works when the concept is genuinely academic.
- Some AWL words live in everyday use too: "area, focus, benefit, create, involve" are natural in both academic and everyday register; using them does not make the text artificial.
- The British–American spelling duality: analyse/analyze, behaviour/behavior, -ise/-ize (organise/organize). Be consistent within a text; do not mix the two.
- Uncountable academic nouns: research, evidence, information, knowledge, data (special: plural). These take no "a" and have no plural — "researches, evidences, informations" are all wrong.
AWL yazı içindir ama akademik konuşmada (sunum, seminer, tartışma, viva) da işe yarar. Yalnız günlük sohbette abartmak yapmacık durur. Aşağıdaki diyalog dozun nasıl ayarlanacağını gösteriyor.
The AWL is for writing, but it works in academic speech too (presentation, seminar, discussion, viva). Only, overdoing it in everyday chat sounds artificial. The dialogue below shows how to adjust the dose.
Akademik yazıda AWL, Nominalizasyon ve Akademik Register ile birlikte yoğun, kişisellikten arınmış ve kontrollü bir üslup kurar. Fiiller adlaştırılır, iddialar temkinle (hedging) yumuşatılır, bağlaçlar mantığı taşır. Aşağıdaki kısa paragraf tipik bir akademik giriş cümlesi kümesidir.
- investigate the extent to which = akademik araştırma sorusu kalıbı; "how much"un resmî hali.
- has established a correlation = present perfect + AWL eşdizimi; alanyazın bulgusu bildirir.
- obtained from = data ile klasik eşdizim; "gotten from" günlük olurdu.
- significant factor / limited role = derece nüansı; ikisi karşıtlık kurar (whereas).
- consequently = mantıksal sonuç bağı; "so"nun akademik karşılığı.
- while preliminary = hedging; iddiayı temkinle yumuşatır, aşırı iddiadan kaçınır.
- considerable implications for = değerlendirme + sonuç kalıbı; makaleyi geleceğe bağlar.
In academic writing, the AWL, together with Nominalization and Academic Register, builds a dense, depersonalized and controlled style. Verbs are nominalized, claims are softened with caution (hedging), connectors carry the logic. The short paragraph below is a set of typical academic opening sentences.
- investigate the extent to which = an academic research-question pattern; the formal form of "how much".
- has established a correlation = present perfect + AWL collocation; reports a finding in the literature.
- obtained from = a classic collocation with data; "gotten from" would be everyday.
- significant factor / limited role = a nuance of degree; the two set up a contrast (whereas).
- consequently = a logical-result link; the academic counterpart of "so".
- while preliminary = hedging; softens the claim with caution, avoids overstatement.
- considerable implications for = an evaluation + conclusion pattern; links the paper to the future.
- generated considerable debate = AWL eşdizimi; "caused a big argument"ın akademik hali.
- argue / contend = iddia fiilleri; ikisi karşıt görüşleri taşır, tekrar yerine çeşitleme.
- established that... is a significant variable = bulgu kurma + AWL isim (variable).
- plays a crucial role = sabit eşdizim; teknolojinin önemini vurgular.
- The data indicate = data çoğul uyum + temkinli fiil (indicate).
- contributes positively / adverse effects = değerlendirme kümesi; olumlu-olumsuz zıtlık.
- Consequently / Nevertheless = mantık bağlaçları; sonuç ve karşıtlık taşır.
- the evidence remains far from conclusive = hedging; kesinlik iddiasından kaçınır.
- may face significant disadvantages = olasılık (may) + AWL; temkinli ama güçlü kapanış.
- generated considerable debate = an AWL collocation; the academic form of "caused a big argument".
- argue / contend = claim verbs; the two carry opposing views, variation instead of repetition.
- established that... is a significant variable = establishing a finding + AWL noun (variable).
- plays a crucial role = a fixed collocation; emphasizes the importance of technology.
- The data indicate = data plural agreement + a cautious verb (indicate).
- contributes positively / adverse effects = an evaluation cluster; a positive-negative contrast.
- Consequently / Nevertheless = logic connectors; carry result and contrast.
- the evidence remains far from conclusive = hedging; avoids a claim of certainty.
- may face significant disadvantages = possibility (may) + AWL; a cautious but strong close.
Temel (B2): Tek terfi
Orta (C1): Eşdizim + aile biçimi
İleri (C2): Nüans + hedging + yoğunluk
Basic (B2): A single promotion
Intermediate (C1): Collocation + family form
Advanced (C2): Nuance + hedging + density
Bu sorular kuralı değil, anlamı ve uygunluğu test eder. Cevaplamadan önce "hangi register?" ve "hangi eşdizim?" diye sor.
- "conduct research" mi "make research" mi doğrudur, neden?"conduct research" doğrudur. "research" sayılamaz bir isimdir ve "make" ile değil "conduct/carry out" ile eşdizim kurar. "make research" yanlış eşdizimdir.
- Bir akademik metinde "big problem" yerine ne kullanırsın?"significant / major / serious problem" — "big" günlük register'dır; akademikte önem bildiren tek güçlü sıfat tercih edilir.
- "The analysis" mi "the analyse" mi? Neden?"The analysis" — burada isim yuvası var (the + isim). "analyse" fiil biçimidir; isim biçimi "analysis"tir. Kelime ailesi biçim seçimi.
- "significant" kelimesini bilimsel bir metinde dikkatli kullanmalı mıyız? Neden?Evet. Bilimde "significant" = istatistiksel olarak anlamlı (p<0.05) anlamına gelebilir; istatistik yürütmediysen sadece "önemli" demek için "notable/considerable" daha güvenlidir.
- "utilise a pen" doğal bir akademik ifade midir?Hayır. Somut ve basit bir eylem için "utilise" aşırı-resmî ve gülünçtür; "use a pen" doğrudur. AWL her bağlamda değil, kavram gerçekten akademikse kullanılır.
- "data" tekil mi çoğul mu fiil alır (akademik norm)?Akademik norm çoğuldur: "the data are / suggest". "datum"un çoğuludur. Günlük yazıda tekil kullanım yaygınlaşsa da sınavda çoğul güvenlidir.
These questions test not the rule but meaning and appropriateness. Before answering, ask "which register?" and "which collocation?".
- Is "conduct research" or "make research" correct, and why?"conduct research" is correct. "research" is an uncountable noun and collocates not with "make" but with "conduct/carry out". "make research" is a wrong collocation.
- In an academic text, what would you use instead of "big problem"?"significant / major / serious problem" — "big" is everyday register; in academic writing a single strong adjective indicating importance is preferred.
- "The analysis" or "the analyse"? Why?"The analysis" — here there is a noun slot (the + noun). "analyse" is the verb form; the noun form is "analysis". Word-family form selection.
- Should we use the word "significant" carefully in a scientific text? Why?Yes. In science "significant" can mean statistically significant (p<0.05); if you have not run statistics, "notable/considerable" is safer for simply saying "important".
- Is "utilise a pen" a natural academic expression? No. For a concrete, simple action, "utilise" is over-formal and ridiculous; "use a pen" is correct. The AWL is used not in every context but only when the concept is genuinely academic.
- Does "data" take a singular or plural verb (the academic norm)? The academic norm is plural: "the data are / suggest". It is the plural of "datum". Although the singular use is spreading in everyday writing, the plural is safe in the exam.
- The experiment ______ (showed) a clear pattern.demonstrated / revealed

Görev: Aşağıdaki günlük paragrafı, anlamını koruyarak akademik register'a yükselt (yaklaşık 90–120 kelime). En az 6 farklı AWL kelimesi/eşdizimi kullan, en az bir yerde hedging (temkin) uygula ve gereksiz süslemeden kaçın.
Günlük metin: "A lot of people think that using phones too much is a big problem for young people. Some studies found out that it makes them sleep less and feel more sad. So maybe parents should do something about it. But we still don't know for sure, so we need more research."
- Rehber soru 1: "a lot of people think" → hangi akademik kalıp? (örn. "It is widely believed that")
- Rehber soru 2: "big problem" ve "found out" nasıl terfi eder?
- Rehber soru 3: "so" ve "but" yerine hangi bağlaçlar? (consequently, however)
- Rehber soru 4: "we don't know for sure" nasıl hedging'e çevrilir? ("the evidence remains inconclusive")
- Rehber soru 5: "do research" değil, hangi eşdizim? (conduct/carry out research)
Task: Raise the everyday paragraph below into academic register while preserving its meaning (approximately 90–120 words). Use at least 6 different AWL words/collocations, apply hedging (caution) in at least one place, and avoid unnecessary decoration.
Everyday text: "A lot of people think that using phones too much is a big problem for young people. Some studies found out that it makes them sleep less and feel more sad. So maybe parents should do something about it. But we still don't know for sure, so we need more research."
- Guiding question 1: "a lot of people think" → which academic pattern? (e.g. "It is widely believed that")
- Guiding question 2: how do "big problem" and "found out" get promoted?
- Guiding question 3: which connectors instead of "so" and "but"? (consequently, however)
- Guiding question 4: how is "we don't know for sure" turned into hedging? ("the evidence remains inconclusive")
- Guiding question 5: not "do research", but which collocation? (conduct/carry out research)
Kavram kontrolü (CCQ) için sorular: "Is 'a research' correct? Why not?" (sayılamaz), "Would you write 'utilise a pen' in an essay? Why not?" (aşırı-resmî), "Does 'significant' always mean 'big'?"
Questions for concept checking (CCQs): "Is 'a research' correct? Why not?" (uncountable), "Would you write 'utilise a pen' in an essay? Why not?" (over-formal), "Does 'significant' always mean 'big'?" (no — the statistical meaning). These questions test not the rule but the intuition of appropriateness.
Activity suggestion — "The Register-Upgrade Ladder": Give the learner an everyday paragraph; have them upgrade it in 3 rounds. Round 1: word promotion only. Round 2: collocation correction. Round 3: hedging + connectors. In each round read the text aloud; let the learner develop a feel for "when did it become too ornate?". This is the best vaccine against the overuse trap.
- AWL = akademik metinlerde sık geçen, alan-üstü 570 kelime ailesi; işlevi register yükseltmek.
- Terfi mantığı: her günlük kelimenin akademik eşdeğeri var (find out→establish, big→significant, so→consequently).
- Kelimeyi değil kelime ailesini öğren (analyse/analysis/analytical) ve doğru dilbilgisel yuvaya doğru biçimi koy.
- Kelimeyi değil eşdizimi öğren (conduct research, play a role, draw a conclusion); yanlış eşdizim kelime doğru olsa da tuhaf durur.
- Nüansa dikkat: significant/notable/substantial farklı; "significant" bilimde istatistiksel anlam taşıyabilir.
- En sık hata kümesi: sayılamaz isimler (research/data/information/evidence), yanlış aile biçimi, günlük register kaçağı.
- AWL'yi aşırı kullanma: doz önemlidir; "utilise a pen" gibi zorlamalar metni gülünç yapar.
- AWL, Akademik Register, Nominalizasyon ve Parafraz ile birlikte iyi akademik yazının yakıtıdır.
- AWL = 570 cross-disciplinary word families that occur frequently in academic texts; its function is to raise register.
- Promotion logic: every everyday word has an academic equivalent (find out→establish, big→significant, so→consequently).
- Learn not the word but the word family (analyse/analysis/analytical) and put the right form in the right grammatical slot.
- Learn not the word but the collocation (conduct research, play a role, draw a conclusion); a wrong collocation looks odd even if the word is correct.
- Mind the nuance: significant/notable/substantial differ; "significant" can carry a statistical meaning in science.
- The most frequent error cluster: uncountable nouns (research/data/information/evidence), wrong family form, everyday-register leakage.
- Do not overuse the AWL: dose matters; forced attempts like "utilise a pen" make the text ridiculous.
- Together with Academic Register, Nominalization and Paraphrasing, the AWL is the fuel of good academic writing.
