Bu yüzden "Yarın seni ararım" cümlesini İngilizceye I call you tomorrow diye çevirmek yanlıştır; doğrusu gelecek zamandır (I'll call you).
Türk öğrenciye neden zor gelir?
- Üçüncü tekil şahısta fiile -s eklenir (he works). Türkçede özneye göre böyle sessiz bir takı yoktur; bu yüzden en çok unutulan kuraldır.
- Olumsuz ve soruda do/does yardımcı fiili devreye girer. Türkçede yardımcı fiil kavramı bu şekilde yoktur ("içmem" tek kelimedir; İngilizcede "I don't drink").
- "Şu an" anlamı için Geniş Zaman kullanılamaz; oysa Türkçede "Ne yapıyorsun?" sorusuna bazen geniş zaman benzeri yapılarla cevap verebiliriz.
- Gelecek/olasılık için Türkçe Geniş Zaman rahatça kullanılırken İngilizce Present Simple bunu (birkaç istisna dışında) yapmaz.
Üç temel anlamı tek bakışta
The Present Simple, i.e. the Aorist, is the tense that tells us an action is true generally, as a habit, or all the time. Sentences such as "I drink coffee in the mornings," "The sun rises in the east," and "She lives in Istanbul" are expressed in English with this tense.
Why does this tense exist? Because languages want to distinguish between what happens only once and what is always the case. "It is raining now" is a momentary observation; "It rains a lot here in winter" is a generalisation. English distinguishes the two with two separate structures: the first is the Present Continuous, and the second is the Present Simple.
Its equivalent in Turkish
The closest equivalent in Turkish is the Aorist: the -ir / -ar / -er suffixes ("gelirim", "çalışırım", "severim"). This similarity makes learning easier, but it is not exactly the same. The Turkish Aorist sometimes also carries a future or possibility meaning ("Yarın gelirim" = I'll come tomorrow, "Belki yağar" = it may rain). The English Present Simple, on the other hand, is a much narrower box: essentially habit, general truth and timetable. That is why translating the sentence "Yarın seni ararım" into English as I call you tomorrow is wrong; the correct form is the future (I'll call you).
Why do Turkish learners find it difficult?
- In the third person singular a -s is added to the verb (he works). Turkish has no such silent ending that changes with the subject, so this is the most frequently forgotten rule.
- In negatives and questions the auxiliary do/does comes into play. Turkish has no concept of an auxiliary verb like this ("içmem" is a single word; in English "I don't drink").
- The Aorist cannot be used for the "right now" meaning; yet in Turkish we can sometimes answer the question "Ne yapıyorsun?" (What are you doing?) with aorist-like structures.
- While the Turkish Aorist is freely used for future/possibility, the English Present Simple does not do this (apart from a few exceptions).
The three core meanings at a glance
- İşlevi: alışkanlık, tekrarlanan eylem, genel gerçek, kalıcı durum ve tarife (timetable) anlatır.
- Temel biçim: özne + fiilin yalın hali. Örn. I work / They play.
- Üçüncü tekil (he/she/it): fiile -s / -es eklenir. Örn. She works / He watches.
- Olumsuz: do not (don't) ya da does not (doesn't) + yalın fiil. Örn. I don't work / She doesn't work.
- Soru: Do / Does + özne + yalın fiil? Örn. Do you work? / Does she work?
- Altın kural: does/doesn't varsa ana fiil -s almaz (does she work
s? → works değil work). - Sık kullanılan zaman ifadeleri: always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day, on Mondays.
- Sıklık zarfları genellikle ana fiilden önce, be fiilinden sonra gelir: I always eat.../ She is always...
- Karıştırma: tam şu an süren eylem için Present Simple değil Şimdiki Zaman kullan.
- Telaffuz: 3. tekildeki -s eki üç farklı sesle okunur: /s/, /z/, /ɪz/.
- Function: it expresses habits, repeated actions, general truths, permanent states and timetables.
- Basic form: subject + the base form of the verb. E.g. I work / They play.
- Third person singular (he/she/it): add -s / -es to the verb. E.g. She works / He watches.
- Negative: do not (don't) or does not (doesn't) + base verb. E.g. I don't work / She doesn't work.
- Question: Do / Does + subject + base verb? E.g. Do you work? / Does she work?
- Golden rule: if does/doesn't is present, the main verb takes no -s (does she work
s? → work, not works). - Frequently used time expressions: always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day, on Mondays.
- Adverbs of frequency usually come before the main verb; with the verb be they come after it: I always eat.../ She is always...
- Caution: for an action happening right now, use not the Present Simple but the Present Continuous.
- Pronunciation: the third-person -s is read with three different sounds: /s/, /z/, /ɪz/.
1) Olumlu cümle (Affirmative)
Formül: özne + fiil (yalın). Ama üçüncü tekil şahısta (he/she/it) fiile -s/-es eklenir: özne + fiil + -s/-es. Türkçedeki öznesi kim olursa olsun değişmeyen "çalışırım/çalışırsın/çalışır" mantığı burada bozulur — İngilizce yalnızca 3. tekilde fiili değiştirir.
2) Olumsuz cümle (Negative)
Formül: özne + do/does + not + fiil (yalın). Kısaltmalar günlük dilde neredeyse zorunludur: do not → don't, does not → doesn't. Çok kritik nokta: does zaten 3. tekili işaretlediği için ana fiil tekrar -s almaz.
3) Soru cümlesi (Interrogative)
Evet/Hayır sorusu için yardımcı fiili öne alırız: Do/Does + özne + fiil (yalın)? Bilgi sorusu için başa soru sözcüğü gelir: Wh- + do/does + özne + fiil? Türkçedeki "mi/mı" soru ekinin İngilizcedeki karşılığı, cümlenin başına gelen bu yardımcı fiildir (bkz. Soru Yapıları).
4) Kısa cevaplar (Short answers)
İngilizcede evet/hayır sorularına ana fiili tekrarlamadan, yalnızca yardımcı fiille cevap veririz. Bu çok doğal ve günlük bir kalıptır; "Yes, I like" demek kulağa yanlış gelir.
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Do you work here? | Yes, I do. | No, I don't. |
| Do they know? | Yes, they do. | No, they don't. |
| Does he drive? | Yes, he does. | No, he doesn't. |
| Does it work? | Yes, it does. | No, it doesn't. |
1) Affirmative sentences
Formula: subject + verb (base form). But in the third person singular (he/she/it) a -s/-es is added to the verb: subject + verb + -s/-es. The Turkish logic of "çalışırım/çalışırsın/çalışır", where the verb stays the same whatever the subject, breaks down here — English changes the verb only in the 3rd person singular.
2) Negative sentences
Formula: subject + do/does + not + verb (base form). Contractions are almost obligatory in everyday language: do not → don't, does not → doesn't. A very critical point: because does already marks the 3rd person singular, the main verb does not take -s again.
3) Interrogative sentences
For a Yes/No question we move the auxiliary to the front: Do/Does + subject + verb (base form)? For an information question, a question word comes first: Wh- + do/does + subject + verb? The English equivalent of the Turkish question suffix "mi/mı" is this auxiliary placed at the front of the sentence (see Question Structures).
4) Short answers
In English we answer yes/no questions without repeating the main verb, using only the auxiliary. This is a very natural, everyday pattern; "Yes, I like" sounds wrong.
| Question | Affirmative short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Do you work here? | Yes, I do. | No, I don't. |
| Do they know? | Yes, they do. | No, they don't. |
| Does he drive? | Yes, he does. | No, he doesn't. |
| Does it work? | Yes, it does. | No, it doesn't. |
Aşağıda work (çalışmak) fiilinin tüm öznelerle olumlu çekimi verilmiştir. Dikkat: yalnızca he / she / it öznesinde fiil değişir (-s eki), diğer tüm öznelerde fiil yalın kalır. Bu, İngilizce çekimin neredeyse tamamıdır — Türkçedeki altı ayrı çekimin aksine son derece basittir, ama işte o tek istisna (3. tekil -s) en çok gözden kaçan noktadır.
| Özne | Biçim | Örnek | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | work | I work every day. | Her gün çalışırım. |
| You | work | You work hard. | Çok çalışırsın. |
| He | works | He works at night. | O geceleri çalışır. |
| She | works | She works from home. | O evden çalışır. |
| It | works | It works perfectly. | Mükemmel çalışıyor. |
| We | work | We work together. | Birlikte çalışırız. |
| They | work | They work in Ankara. | Ankara'da çalışırlar. |
Düzensiz iki fiil: have ve be
İki fiil bu kalıbın dışına çıkar. have fiilinin 3. tekili has'tir (haves değil). be fiili ise tamamen kendine özgüdür ve do/does kullanmaz.
| Özne | have | be |
|---|---|---|
| I | have | am |
| You / We / They | have | are |
| He / She / It | has | is |
Below is the affirmative conjugation of the verb work with all subjects. Note: the verb changes only with the subject he / she / it (the -s ending); with all other subjects the verb stays in the base form. This is almost the whole of English conjugation — far simpler than the six separate conjugations in Turkish, but that single exception (3rd person -s) is the point most often overlooked.
| Subject | Form | Example | Turkish |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | work | I work every day. | Her gün çalışırım. |
| You | work | You work hard. | Çok çalışırsın. |
| He | works | He works at night. | O geceleri çalışır. |
| She | works | She works from home. | O evden çalışır. |
| It | works | It works perfectly. | Mükemmel çalışıyor. |
| We | work | We work together. | Birlikte çalışırız. |
| They | work | They work in Ankara. | Ankara'da çalışırlar. |
Two irregular verbs: have and be
Two verbs fall outside this pattern. The 3rd person singular of have is has (not haves). The verb be is entirely unique and does not use do/does.
| Subject | have | be |
|---|---|---|
| I | have | am |
| You / We / They | have | are |
| He / She / It | has | is |
Üçüncü tekil şahısta fiile eklenen takının yazımı, fiilin son harfine göre değişir. Aşağıdaki tablo tüm durumları özetler.
| Kural | Ne zaman | Örnek fiil | 3. tekil hali |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sadece -s ekle | Çoğu fiil | work, play, read | works, plays, reads |
| -es ekle | -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -z ile bitenler | watch, go, do, fix, kiss | watches, goes, does, fixes, kisses |
| y → ies | Sessiz + y ile bitenler | study, try, fly, carry | studies, tries, flies, carries |
| Sadece -s (y korunur) | Sesli + y ile bitenler | play, buy, enjoy, say | plays, buys, enjoys, says |
| Düzensiz | have | have | has |
The spelling of the ending added to the verb in the third person singular changes according to the last letter of the verb. The table below summarises all the cases.
| Rule | When | Example verb | 3rd person form |
|---|---|---|---|
| Just add -s | Most verbs | work, play, read | works, plays, reads |
| Add -es | Verbs ending in -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -z | watch, go, do, fix, kiss | watches, goes, does, fixes, kisses |
| y → ies | Verbs ending in consonant + y | study, try, fly, carry | studies, tries, flies, carries |
| Just -s (y is kept) | Verbs ending in vowel + y | play, buy, enjoy, say | plays, buys, enjoys, says |
| Irregular | have | have | has |
Yazıda hep aynı görünen -s eki, konuşurken üç farklı sesle okunur. Hangi sesin çıkacağı, fiilin son sesine (harfine değil, sesine) bağlıdır. Bu ayrım, akıcı ve doğal konuşmanın gizli anahtarıdır; Türk öğrenciler genelde hepsini "s" gibi okuduğu için aksan buradan belli olur.
| Ses | Ne zaman | Örnek (yazılış) | Okunuş (yaklaşık) |
|---|---|---|---|
| /s/ (sert s) | Sessiz/soft seslerden sonra: /p/ /t/ /k/ /f/ /θ/ | works, sleeps, sits, laughs | wörks, sliips, sits, laafs |
| /z/ (yumuşak z) | Titreşimli seslerden ve tüm ünlülerden sonra | goes, plays, reads, loves | gouz, pleyz, riidz, lavz |
| /ɪz/ (ı_z, ekstra hece) | Islıklı seslerden sonra: /s/ /z/ /ʃ/ /tʃ/ /dʒ/ /ks/ | watches, kisses, washes, uses | voçız, kisiz, voşız, yuuzız |
The -s ending, which always looks the same in writing, is pronounced with three different sounds when spoken. Which sound appears depends on the last sound of the verb (its sound, not its letter). This distinction is the hidden key to fluent, natural speech; because Turkish learners usually read them all as "s", their accent shows here.
| Sound | When | Example (spelling) | Pronunciation (approximate) |
|---|---|---|---|
| /s/ (hard s) | After voiceless/soft sounds: /p/ /t/ /k/ /f/ /θ/ | works, sleeps, sits, laughs | wörks, sliips, sits, laafs |
| /z/ (soft z) | After voiced sounds and all vowels | goes, plays, reads, loves | gouz, pleyz, riidz, lavz |
| /ɪz/ (ı_z, an extra syllable) | After sibilant sounds: /s/ /z/ /ʃ/ /tʃ/ /dʒ/ /ks/ | watches, kisses, washes, uses | voçız, kisiz, voşız, yuuzız |
4) Durum fiilleri (stative verbs)
1) Habits and routines (the most common)
Regularly repeated actions. They usually come with adverbs of frequency (Adverbs of Frequency) or with expressions like "every day/week".
2) General truths and unchanging states
Scientific facts, laws of nature, information that is always true.
3) Permanent states
Long-term situations that do not change easily: where you live, what job you do, whom you know. For temporary situations the Present Continuous is preferred.
4) Stative verbs
Verbs like like, love, hate, want, need, know, believe, understand, seem, belong express a state, not an action, and normally stay in the Present Simple even for right now. For details, see Stative Verbs.
5) Timetables and schedules — future meaning
For predetermined, fixed programmes such as buses, trains, planes and cinema showings, the Present Simple is used even if the event is in the future. This is a rare case where the Present Simple carries a future meaning, and it emphasises the certainty of a schedule.
6) Instructions, recipes and directions
For describing the steps when giving a recipe, a user manual, or directions.
7) Commentary, narration and headlines (advanced)
In sports commentary, stage directions, film/book summaries, joke-telling and newspaper headlines, the "narrative present" is used; it conveys events vividly, as if happening now.
Present Simple sık sık belirli zaman ifadeleriyle birlikte görünür. Bunlar cümlenin zamanını tahmin etmene yardım eder, ama tek başına kanıt değildir — aynı kelimeler başka zamanlarda da geçebilir.
| Tür | İfadeler | Örnek cümle |
|---|---|---|
| Sıklık zarfları | always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never | She never eats breakfast. |
| Sıklık öbekleri | every day/week/year, once a week, twice a month | We meet twice a month. |
| Günler/programlar | on Mondays, at weekends, in the evenings | He plays football on Sundays. |
| Genelleme belirteçleri | in general, as a rule, normally, generally | Normally I finish work at six. |
Sıklık zarfının yeri
- Ana fiilden önce: I often read at night.
- be fiilinden sonra: She is always happy.
- Yardımcı fiil varsa onunla ana fiil arasında: I don't usually agree.
- usually, normally, sometimes, often cümlenin başına da gelebilir (vurgu için): Sometimes I take the bus.
- always ve never genelde cümle başına gelmez (emir kipi hariç: Never give up.).
The Present Simple often appears with certain time expressions. These help you guess the tense of the sentence, but on their own they are not proof — the same words can also occur with other tenses.
| Type | Expressions | Example sentence |
|---|---|---|
| Adverbs of frequency | always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never | She never eats breakfast. |
| Frequency phrases | every day/week/year, once a week, twice a month | We meet twice a month. |
| Days/schedules | on Mondays, at weekends, in the evenings | He plays football on Sundays. |
| Generalisation markers | in general, as a rule, normally, generally | Normally I finish work at six. |
Position of the adverb of frequency
- Before the main verb: I often read at night.
- After the verb be: She is always happy.
- If there is an auxiliary, between it and the main verb: I don't usually agree.
- usually, normally, sometimes, often can also come at the start of the sentence (for emphasis): Sometimes I take the bus.
- always and never usually do not come at the start of the sentence (except the imperative: Never give up.).
Present Simple yalnızca "her zaman doğru" demez; ince anlam katmanları taşır. Aynı fiil, kullanılan zamana göre kalıcı vs. geçici, nesnel vs. duygusal, hatta kibar vs. sert tonlar üretebilir.
Kalıcılık ve kimlik vurgusu
Present Simple
The Present Simple does not only mean "always true"; it carries subtle layers of meaning. Depending on the tense used, the same verb can produce permanent vs. temporary, objective vs. emotional, even polite vs. blunt tones.
Emphasis on permanence and identity
Present Simple
Presents something as part of the subject's identity/nature.
Present Continuous
Implies it is temporary, just for this period.
Certainty and objectivity
The Present Simple shows that the speaker presents the event as a fact/rule. That is why it is preferred in science, rules, definitions and general assessments; it gives a sense of objectivity rather than subjectivity.
Emotion and complaint in frequent repetition
An interesting subtlety: always usually calls for the Present Simple, but in an annoyed/complaining tone always + Present Continuous is used. Mixing these two changes the intended emotion.
Politeness and performative verbs
Verbs that perform the action by being said (promise, apologize, suggest, insist, declare) are used in the Present Simple; this gives a formal, definite tone.
- Türkçe Geniş Zaman olasılık/rica taşıyabilir ("Bana yardım eder misin?"), İngilizcede bu işlev başka yapılara (will/can/would) düşer.
- İngilizce, şu an süren eylemi Present Simple'dan kesin biçimde ayırır (Şimdiki Zaman); Türkçede sınır daha bulanıktır.
- İngilizce olumsuz/soruda do/does zorunludur; Türkçede olumsuzluk ve soru tek fiil içinde eriyip gider ("içmem", "içer misin").
The Turkish Aorist (-ir/-ar) is very similar to the English Present Simple, which is why it seems easy at first. But the two languages draw the boundaries of this tense differently. The points below are where learners thinking in Turkish typically stumble.
- The Turkish Aorist is freely used for the future ("Yarın gelirim"), whereas the English Present Simple is not used for the future (apart from timetables).
- The Turkish Aorist can carry possibility/request ("Bana yardım eder misin?"); in English this function falls to other structures (will/can/would).
- English clearly separates the action in progress right now from the Present Simple (Present Continuous); in Turkish the boundary is blurrier.
- In English, do/does is obligatory in negatives/questions; in Turkish negation and question dissolve into a single verb ("içmem", "içer misin").
Present Simple en çok Şimdiki Zaman ile, bazen de geçmişteki alışkanlıklar bağlamında Geçmiş Zaman ve deneyim bağlamında Yakın Geçmiş ile karıştırılır. Aşağıdaki tablo farkı netleştirir.
| Yapı | Ne anlatır | Örnek | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present Simple | Alışkanlık, genel gerçek, kalıcı durum | I read every night. | Her gece okurum. |
| Present Continuous | Tam şu an süren / geçici eylem | I am reading now. | Şu an okuyorum. |
| Past Simple | Geçmişte bitmiş eylem/alışkanlık | I read that book last year. | O kitabı geçen yıl okudum. |
| Present Perfect | Geçmişten şimdiye uzanan deneyim/sonuç | I have read that book. | O kitabı okudum (deneyim var). |
The Present Simple is most often confused with the Present Continuous, and sometimes, in the context of past habits, with the Past Simple, and, in the context of experience, with the Present Perfect. The table below makes the difference clear.
| Structure | What it expresses | Example | Turkish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present Simple | Habit, general truth, permanent state | I read every night. | Her gece okurum. |
| Present Continuous | An action in progress right now / a temporary action | I am reading now. | Şu an okuyorum. |
| Past Simple | A finished action/habit in the past | I read that book last year. | O kitabı geçen yıl okudum. |
| Present Perfect | Experience/result reaching from the past to now | I have read that book. | O kitabı okudum (deneyim var). |
Present Simple'ın "gelecek için kullanılmaz" gibi görünen kuralının birkaç meşru istisnası ve özel biçimi vardır.
Bunları bilmek, kuralı körü körüne uygulamaktan korur.
1) Zaman/şart yan cümlelerinde gelecek anlamı
when, if, as soon as, before, after, until, unless ile başlayan yan cümlede, gelecekten söz etsek bile will değil Present Simple kullanılır. Ana cümlede gelecek (will) durur.
2) be fiilinin bağımsızlığı
be fiili do/does kullanmadan olumsuz ve soru kurar; bu bir istisna değil ama sürekli unutulan özel bir davranıştır (Bölüm 5).
3) Emphatic (vurgulu) do
The Present Simple's seemingly absolute "not used for the future" rule has a few legitimate exceptions and special forms.
Knowing these keeps you from applying the rule blindly.
1) Future meaning in time/conditional subordinate clauses
In a subordinate clause beginning with when, if, as soon as, before, after, until, unless, the Present Simple is used not will, even when talking about the future. The main clause keeps the future (will).
2) The independence of the verb be
The verb be forms negatives and questions without do/does; this is not an exception but a special behaviour that is constantly forgotten (Section 5).
3) Emphatic do
To stress a fact, to object, or to insist, do/does is added even in an affirmative sentence and is stressed. It conveys the emphatic tone of the Turkish "gerçekten de / işte".
4) headlines, recipes, sports commentary
In newspaper headlines, recipes, stage directions and live sports commentary, even past or momentary events are given in the Present Simple (illustrated in Section 8). This is for the economy and vividness of the language.
Present Simple, tanışma, kendini anlatma ve günlük sohbetin belkemiğidir. Aşağıdaki diyalog tipik bir tanışma anını gösterir.
The Present Simple is the backbone of introductions, self-description and everyday conversation. The dialogue below shows a typical moment of meeting someone.
Akademik yazıda Present Simple, nesnellik ve kalıcı geçerlilik hissi verdiği için baskındır: tanımlar, genellemeler, bulguların yorumu, tablo/grafik betimlemeleri ve alıntı yaparken kullanılır.
"According to Smith (2020), the theory explains..." gibi kalıplar standarttır.
- "agree", "matters", "depends" — durum/genelleme fiilleri Present Simple'da.
- "When learners encounter..." — zaman yan cümlesinde Present Simple (Bölüm 14).
- "holds true / plays / signals" — nesnel genel gerçek tonu; akademik yazının imzası.
- "describe, present, explain" — bir çalışmanın adımlarını anlatan paralel Present Simple zinciri.
- "textbooks define, articles summarise, reviewers evaluate" — çoğul özneler, fiil yalın; genel-doğru genelleme.
- "remains true beyond the moment of writing" — Present Simple'ın anlık-üstü, kalıcı geçerlilik tonu.
In academic writing the Present Simple dominates because it gives a sense of objectivity and permanent validity: it is used for definitions, generalisations, interpretation of findings, describing tables/figures, and when quoting.
"According to Smith (2020), the theory explains..." and patterns like this are standard.
- "agree", "matters", "depends" — state/generalisation verbs in the Present Simple.
- "When learners encounter..." — Present Simple in a time clause (Section 14).
- "holds true / plays / signals" — objective general-truth tone; the signature of academic writing.
- "describe, present, explain" — a chain of parallel Present Simple verbs describing the steps of a study.
- "textbooks define, articles summarise, reviewers evaluate" — plural subjects, base verb; a general-truth generalisation.
- "remains true beyond the moment of writing" — the Present Simple's beyond-the-moment, permanent-validity tone.
- "lives, works, wakes up, makes, reads, catches, unlocks" — günlük rutin zinciri; hepsi 3. tekil -s (catch → catches -es kuralı).
- "doesn't earn... but loves" ve "does not sell... smells" — olumsuz (doesn't/does not + yalın) ile olumlu -s'li fiil yan yana; olumsuzda fiil -s ALMAZ.
- "knows, loves, believes, trusts" — durum/zihin fiilleri; "is knowing/loving" denmez (bkz. Durum Fiilleri).
- "a group... meets", "the whole routine begins" — topluluk/tekil özne 3. tekil sayılır, -s alır.
- "the ferry leaves at the same time" — sabit tarife anlamı; gelecekten söz etse de Present Simple (Bölüm 8, timetable).
- "never agree, rarely thinks, always smells, sometimes wonder" — sıklık zarfları ana fiilden önce; metnin genel-doğru tonunu kurar.
- "If a customer looks lost, she asks..." — şart yan cümlesinde Present Simple (0. tip koşul; her seferinde geçerli genel doğru).
- Tüm metin tek bir günü değil, tekrarlanan alışkanlıkların toplamını anlatır; bu yüzden baştan sona Present Simple hâkimdir.
- "lives, works, wakes up, makes, reads, catches, unlocks" — a daily-routine chain; all 3rd person -s (catch → catches, the -es rule).
- "doesn't earn... but loves" and "does not sell... smells" — a negative (doesn't/does not + base form) side by side with an affirmative -s verb; in the negative the verb takes NO -s.
- "knows, loves, believes, trusts" — state/mental verbs; you don't say "is knowing/loving" (see Stative Verbs).
- "a group... meets", "the whole routine begins" — a collective/singular subject counts as 3rd person singular and takes -s.
- "the ferry leaves at the same time" — a fixed-timetable meaning; even though it refers to the future, Present Simple (Section 8, timetable).
- "never agree, rarely thinks, always smells, sometimes wonder" — adverbs of frequency before the main verb; they set the general-truth tone of the text.
- "If a customer looks lost, she asks..." — Present Simple in a conditional clause (zero conditional; a general truth valid every time).
- The whole text describes not a single day but the sum of repeated habits; that is why the Present Simple dominates throughout.

Aşağıdaki sorular kural ezberini değil, anlamı yoklar. Cevaplamadan önce cümlenin ne demek istediğini düşün.
- "Water freezes at zero degrees." — Bu cümle bir alışkanlık mı, genel gerçek mi?Genel gerçek (bilimsel değişmez doğru). Present Simple bu yüzden kullanılır.
- "The train leaves at 8 tomorrow." — Cümle gelecekten söz ettiği halde neden Present Simple?Çünkü sabit bir tarife (timetable) anlatılıyor; programın kesinliğini vurgulamak için Present Simple kullanılır.
- "He is always interrupting me." — Neden Present Simple değil de continuous kullanılmış?Şikâyet/sinir tonu vermek için. Present Simple ("He always interrupts") daha nötr olurdu.
- "I don't understand." — understand bir eylem mi durum mu?Durum fiili (stative). Bu yüzden 'şu an' için bile Present Simple'da kalır, 'am not understanding' denmez.
- "If you heat ice, it melts." — Bu bir gelecek tahmini mi?Hayır; her zaman geçerli bir genel gerçek/koşul. İki cümle de Present Simple çünkü sonuç evrensel doğru.
The questions below test not rote rules but meaning. Before answering, think about what the sentence is trying to say.
- "Water freezes at zero degrees." — Is this a habit or a general truth?A general truth (an unchanging scientific fact). That is why the Present Simple is used.
- "The train leaves at 8 tomorrow." — Even though the sentence talks about the future, why the Present Simple?Because a fixed timetable is being described; the Present Simple is used to emphasise the certainty of the schedule.
- "He is always interrupting me." — Why is the continuous used rather than the Present Simple? To give a complaining/annoyed tone. The Present Simple ("He always interrupts") would be more neutral.
- "I don't understand." — Is understand an action or a state?A stative verb. That is why it stays in the Present Simple even for 'right now'; you don't say 'am not understanding'.
- "If you heat ice, it melts." — Is this a prediction about the future? No; it is a general truth/condition that is always valid. Both clauses are Present Simple because the result is a universal truth.

Görev: Kendi tipik bir günü hakkında 8-10 cümlelik bir paragraf yaz. Present Simple'ı alışkanlık ve rutin anlatmak için kullan; en az bir olumsuz cümle, bir soru (kendine ya da okura), iki farklı sıklık zarfı ve bir tane 3. tekil özneli cümle ("My friend / My cat ... -s") ekle.
- Rehber sorular: Saat kaçta kalkarsın? Kahvaltıda ne yersin? İşe/okula nasıl gidersin?
- Genellikle ne yaparsın, ne yapmazsın? Hafta sonları rutinin değişir mi?
- Hangi sıklık zarflarını kullanabilirsin? (always, usually, often, sometimes, never)
- 3. tekil özneli en az bir cümle kur ve -s ekini kontrol et.
- Örnek paragraf yaz.I usually wake up at seven o'clock. I don't eat a big breakfast; I just have tea and some bread. I go to work by bus because I don't have a car. My colleague Deniz always arrives before me, and she makes coffee for everyone. In the afternoon I sometimes take a short walk. I rarely work late. Do you have a similar routine? In the evening I read or watch a film, and I go to bed at about eleven.
Task: Write a paragraph of 8-10 sentences about a typical day of your own. Use the Present Simple to describe habits and routines; include at least one negative sentence, one question (to yourself or the reader), two different adverbs of frequency and one sentence with a 3rd person singular subject ("My friend / My cat ... -s").
- Guiding questions: What time do you get up? What do you eat for breakfast? How do you get to work/school?
- What do you usually do, and not do? Does your routine change at the weekend?
- Which adverbs of frequency can you use? (always, usually, often, sometimes, never)
- Build at least one sentence with a 3rd person singular subject and check the -s ending.
- Write a sample paragraph.I usually wake up at seven o'clock.
Kritik kavram kontrolleri (CCQ): "Does this happen now or every day?" (Present Simple vs. Şimdiki Zaman ayrımı için), "Is this always true?" (genel gerçek için), "Do we know the exact time it happens?" (tarife kullanımı için). Bu sorular öğrencinin kuralı ezberlemeden anlamı yakalamasını sağlar.
Tipik hata sıralaması ve müdahale: (1) 3. tekil -s düşürme — en yaygın; her yazılı üründe işaretleyin. (2) doesn't + fiil+s ikili işaretleme — "does zaten -s taşıyor" analojisiyle. (3) do/does yerine "no/not" ile olumsuzlama — anadil etkisi; yardımcı fiil kalıbını drill'leyin. (4) "şu an" için Present Simple — continuous ile yan yana örneklerle ayrıştırın.
Etkinlik önerileri: "Find someone who..." sınıf anketi (Do you...? soru kalıbını çok tekrarlatır); rutin zinciri anlatımı (First I..., then I...); üçüncü kişiyi tanıtma sunumu (partner tanıtımı, -s ekini zorlar); telaffuz için "-s" sesini üçe ayıran minimal pair drill'i (works /s/ – goes /z/ – watches /ɪz/).
Critical concept-check questions (CCQ): "Does this happen now or every day?" (for the Present Simple vs. Present Continuous distinction), "Is this always true?" (for general truth), "Do we know the exact time it happens?" (for the timetable use). These questions let the student grasp the meaning without memorising the rule.
Typical error order and intervention: (1) dropping the 3rd person -s — the most common; mark it in every written product. (2) double marking with doesn't + verb+s — with the analogy "does already carries the -s". (3) negating with "no/not" instead of do/does — a native-language effect; drill the auxiliary pattern. (4) Present Simple for "right now" — separate it out with side-by-side continuous examples.
Suggested activities: a "Find someone who..." class survey (drills the Do you...? question form heavily); routine-chain narration (First I..., then I...); a third-person introduction presentation (introducing a partner, forcing the -s ending); for pronunciation, a minimal-pair drill splitting the "-s" sound into three (works /s/ – goes /z/ – watches /ɪz/).
- Present Simple; alışkanlık, tekrarlanan eylem, genel gerçek, kalıcı durum, durum fiilleri ve tarife anlatır.
- Temel biçim öznenin yalın fiilidir; yalnızca he/she/it öznesinde fiile -s/-es eklenir.
- Yazım: çoğu fiil -s; -s/-sh/-ch/-x/-o → -es; sessiz+y → -ies; sesli+y → -s; have → has.
- Olumsuz: don't/doesn't + yalın fiil. Soru: Do/Does + özne + yalın fiil. does varsa fiil -s almaz.
- be fiili do/does kullanmaz; olumsuz/soruyu kendisi kurar.
- 3. tekil -s üç sesle okunur: /s/, /z/, /ɪz/ (watches gibi ekstra hece).
- Sıklık zarfları ana fiilden önce, be'den sonra gelir; ipucu kelimeleri zamanı garanti etmez, anlam belirleyicidir.
- Tam şu an süren eylem için Present Simple değil Şimdiki Zaman kullanılır.
- Zaman/şart yan cümlelerinde (when, if...) gelecek için will yerine Present Simple gelir.
- Türkçe Geniş Zaman gelecek/olasılık taşıyabilir; İngilizce Present Simple bunu (tarife dışında) yapmaz.
- The Present Simple expresses habits, repeated actions, general truths, permanent states, stative verbs and timetables.
- The basic form is the subject's base verb; only with the subject he/she/it is -s/-es added to the verb.
- Spelling: most verbs -s; -s/-sh/-ch/-x/-o → -es; consonant+y → -ies; vowel+y → -s; have → has.
- Negative: don't/doesn't + base verb. Question: Do/Does + subject + base verb. If does is present, the verb takes no -s.
- The verb be does not use do/does; it forms the negative/question itself.
- The 3rd person -s is read with three sounds: /s/, /z/, /ɪz/ (an extra syllable, as in watches).
- Adverbs of frequency come before the main verb and after be; signal words do not guarantee the tense — meaning is the decider.
- For an action in progress right now, use not the Present Simple but the Present Continuous.
- In time/conditional clauses (when, if...), the Present Simple comes instead of will for the future.
- The Turkish Aorist can carry future/possibility; the English Present Simple does not do this (apart from timetables).
