- '-di'li geçmiş' bize her zaman Past Simple dedirtir sanırız; oysa bazı durumlarda İngilizce Yakın Geçmiş ister. En büyük tuzak burada.
- Telaffuzda '-ed' üç farklı sesle okunur (/t/, /d/, /ɪd/) ve yazımı aynı kalır.
Past Simple is the tense that describes a job, event, or situation that has happened and finished in the past. It is the exact equivalent of the Turkish -di'li geçmiş tense: gittim, gördüm, konuştu, yaptılar. If an event started in the past and was completed in the past, and our interest is "what happened at that moment", we use this tense.
Why does this tense exist? Because we constantly refer back to the past when speaking: we talk about what we did yesterday, where we went last year, what we believed when we were children. Past Simple is the most basic way to convey all these "finished" moments clearly and straightforwardly. It forms the skeleton of a story, a news item, or a memory.
Similar in Turkish
The good news is: the logic is very familiar for a Turkish-speaking student. In Turkish, we add the suffix -di / -dı / -du / -dü to the verb; in English, we add -ed to regular verbs. There is a one-to-one equivalence between "Çalış-tım" and "work-ed".
So why is it difficult?
- Irregular verbs: In Turkish, the -di suffix never fails, but in English, hundreds of verbs are irregular (go→went, buy→bought) and require memorization.
- In negatives and questions, 'did' comes into play and the main verb returns to its base form. There is no such auxiliary verb in Turkish; this is a completely new reflex.
- We assume that 'di'li geçmiş' always means Past Simple; however, in some cases, English requires Present Perfect. The biggest trap is here.
- In pronunciation, '-ed' is pronounced with three different sounds (/t/, /d/, /ɪd/) while the spelling remains the same.
- Past Simple = bitmiş, belirli geçmiş olay. Türkçe -di'li geçmiş.
- Düzenli fiil: fiil + -ed (work → worked, play → played).
- Düzensiz fiil: ikinci hâl (V2) ezberlenir (go → went, see → saw).
- Tüm özneler aynı biçimi alır: I/you/he/she/we/they worked. Kişiye göre değişmez.
- Olumsuz: özne + didn't + yalın fiil (didn't work).
- Soru: Did + özne + yalın fiil? (Did you work?).
- Olumsuz/soruda -ed yoktur; fiil yalına döner. 'Did you worked?' YANLIŞ.
- "To be" ayrı: was (I/he/she/it), were (you/we/they); soru/olumsuzda did KULLANILMAZ.
- Sık zaman ifadeleri: yesterday, last night, two days ago, in 2015, when I was young.
- Sonucu bugüne uzanan/zamanı belirsiz olayda Yakın Geçmiş düşün.
- Past Simple = completed, specific past event. Turkish -di'li geçmiş.
- Regular verb: verb + -ed (work → worked, play → played).
- Irregular verb: second form (V2) is memorized (go → went, see → saw).
- All subjects take the same form: I/you/he/she/we/they worked. It does not change according to the person.
- Negative: subject + didn't + base verb (didn't work).
- Question: Did + subject + base verb? (Did you work?).
- In negatives/questions, there is no -ed; the verb returns to base form. 'Did you worked?' is WRONG.
- "To be" is separate: was (I/he/she/it), were (you/we/they); did is NOT USED in questions/negatives.
- Common time expressions: yesterday, last night, two days ago, in 2015, when I was young.
- For results extending to the present/uncertain timing events, consider Present Perfect.
Düzensiz fiiller korkutucu görünür ama çoğu küçük ses ailelerine ayrılır. Yüzlerce fiili tek tek ezberlemek yerine bu kalıpları yakalarsan zihnin işi kolaylaşır. Aşağıdaki tablo en yaygın aileleri gösterir.
| Kalıp | Örnekler | Not |
|---|---|---|
| -i- → -a- (ing→ang/ung) | sing→sang, drink→drank, swim→swam, ring→rang, begin→began | İçteki ünlü değişir; ek yok. |
| -ought / -aught sesi | buy→bought, bring→brought, think→thought, catch→caught, teach→taught | Aynı 'ot' sesiyle biter; grup hâlinde ezberle. |
| Hiç değişmeyenler | cut→cut, put→put, let→let, hit→hit, cost→cost, shut→shut | V1 = V2; zamanı bağlam belli eder. |
| -d → -t | send→sent, build→built, spend→spent, lend→lent | Sondaki d, t'ye döner. |
| Tamamen farklı (tekil) | go→went, be→was/were | Aileye girmez; tek tek ezberlenir. |
Irregular verbs may seem intimidating, but most are divided into small sound families. Instead of memorizing hundreds of verbs one by one, if you catch these patterns, your mind will find it easier. The table below shows the most common families.
| Pattern | Examples | Note |
|---|---|---|
| -i- → -a- (ing→ang/ung) | sing→sang, drink→drank, swim→swam, ring→rang, begin→began | The internal vowel changes; no suffix. |
| -ought / -aught sound | buy→bought, bring→brought, think→thought, catch→caught, teach→taught | Ends with the same 'ot' sound; memorize in groups. |
| Never change | cut→cut, put→put, let→let, hit→hit, cost→cost, shut→shut | V1 = V2; the context indicates the tense. |
| -d → -t | send→sent, build→built, spend→spent, lend→lent | The final d turns into t. |
| Completely different (singular) | go→went, be→was/were | Does not belong to a family; memorized individually. |
Olumlu cümle
Formül (düzenli): özne + fiil-ed. Formül (düzensiz): özne + V2. Kişi ne olursa olsun biçim değişmez; bu, İngilizcenin en kolay yanlarından biridir.
Olumsuz cümle
Formül: özne + did not (didn't) + yalın fiil. Dikkat: Olumsuzlukta zaman bilgisini did taşır, bu yüzden ana fiil yalın hâline döner. "didn't went" değil, "didn't go".
Soru cümlesi
Formül: Did + özne + yalın fiil ? Yine ana fiil yalındır. Bilgi soran (wh-) sorularda soru kelimesi başa gelir: Where did you go?
Kısa cevaplar
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Did you see it? | Yes, I did. | No, I didn't. |
| Did she come? | Yes, she did. | No, she didn't. |
| Were you late? | Yes, I was. | No, I wasn't. |
| Was it good? | Yes, it was. | No, it wasn't. |
Affirmative Sentence
Formula (regular): subject + verb-ed. Formula (irregular): subject + V2. The form does not change regardless of the person; this is one of the easiest aspects of English.
Negative Sentence
Formula: subject + did not (didn't) + base verb. Note: In the negative, the time information is carried by did, so the main verb returns to its base form. Not "didn't went" but "didn't go".
Question Sentence
Formula: Did + subject + base verb ? Again, the main verb is in base form. In information questions (wh-) the question word comes first: Where did you go?
Short Answers
| Question | Affirmative short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Did you see it? | Yes, I did. | No, I didn't. |
| Did she come? | Yes, she did. | No, she didn't. |
| Were you late? | Yes, I was. | No, I wasn't. |
| Was it good? | Yes, it was. | No, it wasn't. |
Düzenli fiillere -ed eklenirken birkaç yazım kuralı devreye girer. Bunlar telaffuzu ve okunuşu düzgün tutmak içindir.
| Kural | Örnek fiil | Geçmiş hâli | Açıklama |
|---|---|---|---|
| Genel kural: +ed | work / play | worked / played | Çoğu fiile doğrudan -ed eklenir. |
| -e ile bitiyorsa: +d | like / live | liked / lived | Zaten -e var; sadece -d eklenir. |
| Ünsüz + y ile bitiyorsa: y→i +ed | study / try | studied / tried | y harfi i'ye döner. |
| Ünlü + y ile bitiyorsa: +ed | play / enjoy | played / enjoyed | y korunur; i'ye DÖNMEZ. |
| Tek heceli, ünlü+ünsüz: ünsüz ikizlenir | stop / plan | stopped / planned | Son ünsüz çift yazılır. |
| Vurgulu son hece (ünlü+ünsüz): ikizlenir | prefer / permit | preferred / permitted | Vurgu son hecedeyse ünsüz ikizlenir. |
| Vurgusuz son hece: ikizlenmez | visit / open | visited / opened | Vurgu önde; ünsüz tek kalır. |
| -c ile bitiyorsa: +k, sonra +ed | picnic / panic | picnicked / panicked | Sesi korumak için k eklenir. |
When adding -ed to regular verbs, several spelling rules come into play. These are to keep pronunciation and reading correct.
| Rule | Example verb | Past form | Explanation |
|---|---|---|---|
| General rule: +ed | work / play | worked / played | Most verbs take -ed directly. |
| If it ends with -e: +d | like / live | liked / lived | There is already an -e; only -d is added. |
| Ends with consonant + y: y→i +ed | study / try | studied / tried | The y changes to i. |
| Ends with vowel + y: +ed | play / enjoy | played / enjoyed | y is preserved; does NOT change to i. |
| One syllable, vowel+consonant: consonant is doubled | stop / plan | stopped / planned | The last consonant is written double. |
| Stressed final syllable (vowel+consonant): is doubled | prefer / permit | preferred / permitted | If the stress is on the last syllable, the consonant is doubled. |
| Unstressed final syllable: is not doubled | visit / open | visited / opened | The stress is at the front; the consonant remains single. |
| Ends with -c: +k, then +ed | picnic / panic | picnicked / panicked | k is added to preserve the sound. |
Yazımı hep aynı olsa da (-ed), düzenli fiillerin sonu üç farklı sesle okunur. Hangi sesin geleceğini fiilin son sesi (harfi değil, sesi) belirler.
| Okunuş | Ne zaman | Örnekler |
|---|---|---|
| /t/ | Fiil sessiz (ötümsüz) bir sesle bitiyorsa: /p, k, f, s, ʃ, tʃ/ | worked, stopped, watched, kissed, laughed |
| /d/ | Fiil ötümlü bir sesle veya ünlüyle bitiyorsa | played, lived, called, cleaned, tried |
| /ɪd/ | Fiil /t/ veya /d/ sesiyle bitiyorsa (ekstra hece eklenir) | wanted, needed, started, decided, visited |
Although it is always spelled the same (-ed), the endings of regular verbs are pronounced with three different sounds. The sound that comes depends on the last sound of the verb (not the letter, but the sound).
| Pronunciation | When | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| /t/ | If the verb ends with a voiceless sound: /p, k, f, s, ʃ, tʃ/ | worked, stopped, watched, kissed, laughed |
| /d/ | If the verb ends with a voiced sound or a vowel | played, lived, called, cleaned, tried |
| /ɪd/ | If the verb ends with /t/ or /d/ (an extra syllable is added) | wanted, needed, started, decided, visited |
Sıklık zarflarıyla gelir; used to ile de anlatılabilir.
4) Geçmişteki uzun süren durum/hâl
Geçmişte bir süre devam etmiş ama artık geçerli olmayan durumlar; genellikle durum fiilleriyle (live, work, know, have).
5) Kesilen/bölünen olay (past continuous ile)
Arka planda süren bir eylemi (past continuous) kesen kısa, bitmiş eylem Past Simple'da gelir. Ayrıntı için Sürekli Geçmiş Zaman.
The heart of the Past Simple is a single question: "Did the event finish in the past and is the time clear?" If the answer is yes, you can confidently choose this tense in almost any context.
1) Completed, specific past events (basic usage)
Singular events that occurred at a specific moment in the past. They usually come with a time expression.
2) Sequential events (story/event chain)
Actions that follow each other in a story. It is the backbone of the narrative; events are lined up in order.
3) Past habits / repeated situations
Habits that were regular in the past but are no longer valid. They come with frequency adverbs; they can also be expressed with used to.
4) Long-lasting situations in the past
Situations that continued for a while in the past but are no longer valid; usually with state verbs (live, work, know, have).
5) Interrupted events (with past continuous)
A short, finished action that interrupts a longer ongoing action (past continuous) comes in Past Simple. For details, see Past Continuous Tense.
Aşağıdaki ifadeler çoğu zaman Past Simple'a eşlik eder çünkü bitmiş, belirli bir zamana işaret ederler.
| İfade | Türkçe | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| yesterday | dün | I saw her yesterday. |
| last night / week / year | dün gece / geçen hafta / yıl | We met last week. |
| ... ago | ... önce | He called two hours ago. |
| in + geçmiş yıl | ... yılında | She was born in 1998. |
| when I was ... | ... iken | When I was ten, I moved here. |
| the other day | geçen gün | I bumped into him the other day. |
| this morning (bitmişse) | bu sabah | I woke up late this morning. |
The following expressions often accompany the Past Simple because they indicate finished, specific time.
| Expression | Turkish | Example |
|---|---|---|
| yesterday | yesterday | I saw her yesterday. |
| last night / week / year | last night / last week / year | We met last week. |
| ... ago | ... ago | He called two hours ago. |
| in + past year | in the year ... | She was born in 1998. |
| when I was ... | when I was ... | When I was ten, I moved here. |
| the other day | the other day | I bumped into him the other day. |
| this morning (if finished) | this morning | I woke up late this morning. |
Past Simple sadece "geçmişte oldu" demez; kullanımına göre kesinlik, mesafe ve nezaket tonları da taşır.
Kesinlik ve bitmişlik
Past Simple, olayın kapanmış olduğunu ima eder. "I lived in London" dersen, artık orada yaşamadığın anlaşılır; hâlâ yaşıyorsan Yakın Geçmiş (I have lived) gerekir.
Mesafe ve nezaket
İngilizce, geçmiş biçimi bazen zamansal değil, kibarlık/mesafe için kullanır. Şimdiki isteği geçmiş biçimle yumuşatmak yaygındır.
Karşı-olgusal (gerçek dışı) durumlar
Bazı kalıplarda Past Simple şimdiye ait gerçek olmayan durumu anlatır (geçmişi değil). Bu ileri bir kullanımdır.
Past Simple does not just say "it happened in the past"; depending on its usage, it also carries tones of certainty, distance, and politeness.
Certainty and finiteness
Past Simple implies that the event is closed. If you say, "I lived in London", it is understood that you no longer live there; if you still live there, Present Perfect (I have lived) is required.
Distance and politeness
English sometimes uses the past form for not temporal, but politeness/distance. It is common to soften a present request with the past form.
Counterfactual (unreal) situations
In some constructions, Past Simple describes a non-real situation related to the present (not the past). This is an advanced usage.
Türkçe -di'li geçmiş ile Past Simple çoğu zaman örtüşür, ama üç önemli fark Türk öğrenciyi yanıltır.
Türkçe
Olumsuz ve soru eke gömülür (git-me-dim, git-ti-n mi?); ayrı yardımcı fiil yoktur; fiil kişiye göre çekilir.İngilizce
did devreye girer ve ana fiil yalınlaşır (didn't go, did you go?); çekim kişiden bağımsızdır.- Türkçede olumsuz ve soru için ayrı bir yardımcı fiil yoktur (git-me-dim, git-ti-n mi?). İngilizce ise did ekler ve ana fiili yalınlaştırır.
- Türkçede fiil kişiye göre çekilir (git-tim, git-tin, git-ti); İngilizcede biçim tüm kişilerde aynıdır (I/you/he went).
- Türkçe -di'li geçmiş bazen İngilizce present perfect'e denk gelir; birebir çeviri yanıltır (özellikle 'hiç', 'daha', 'zaten' ile).
- Türkçede 'idi/-di' ile durum bildirimi (yorgundum) İngilizcede was/were ister, did değil.
The Turkish past tense with -di often overlaps with Past Simple, but three important differences can mislead Turkish students.
Turkish
Negative and question suffixes are embedded (git-me-dim, git-ti-n mi?); there is no separate auxiliary verb; the verb is conjugated according to the person.English
did comes into play and the main verb is simplified (didn't go, did you go?); conjugation is independent of the person.- In Turkish, there is no separate auxiliary verb for negation and questions (git-me-dim, git-ti-n mi?). In English, did is added and the main verb is simplified.
- In Turkish, the verb is conjugated according to the person (git-tim, git-tin, git-ti); in English, the form is the same for all persons (I/you/he went).
- The Turkish -di past sometimes corresponds to English present perfect; direct translation can be misleading (especially with 'ever', 'still', 'already').
- In Turkish, stating a condition with 'idi/-di' requires was/were in English, not did.
| Yapı | Ne zaman | Örnek | Fark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Past Simple | Bitmiş, belirli geçmiş olay | I lost my keys yesterday. | Zaman belirli, olay kapalı. |
| Present Perfect | Zamanı belirsiz / sonucu şimdi önemli | I have lost my keys. (hâlâ yoklar) | Ne zaman değil, şimdiki sonuç önemli. |
| Past Continuous | Geçmişte süregelen/arka plan eylem | I was losing hope. | Bitmişlik değil, süreklilik/arka plan. |
| Present Simple | Genel doğru, alışkanlık (şimdi) | I lose my keys often. | Geçmiş değil, genel/şimdiki gerçek. |
Karışan üç zamanı tek cümlede görmek ayrımı netleştirir: I lost my keys yesterday (Past Simple: belirli zaman, kapalı olay), I have lost my keys (Yakın Geçmiş: hâlâ yoklar, sonuç şimdi önemli), I was losing hope (Sürekli Geçmiş Zaman: bitmemiş, süregelen arka plan).

- 'used to' + yalın fiil: geçmiş alışkanlık/hâl için ayrı yapı (I used to smoke). Tek seferlik olayda kullanılmaz.
- 'was/were going to' + fiil: geçmişteki niyet/plan (gerçekleşmemiş de olabilir).
- Dolaylı anlatımda zaman kayması: 'He said he was tired.' — present, past'a kayar.
'used to' kalıbının olumsuz/soru inceliği
Geçmiş alışkanlık için used to ayrı bir yapıdır (I used to smoke). Ancak olumsuz ve soruda did devreye girer ve tıpkı normal fiillerde olduğu gibi kalıp yalınlaşır: I didn't use to smoke, Did you use to smoke? Yani olumluda used (d'li), did'li cümlede use (d'siz) yazılır — çünkü geçmişi artık 'did' taşır. Bu, en sık gözden kaçan yazım inceliğidir.

Akademik yazıda Past Simple özellikle yöntem ve bulguların anlatımında, tarihsel bağlamda ve tamamlanmış çalışmalara atıfta kullanılır. Bilimsel makalelerde deney adımları neredeyse her zaman Past Simple'dadır çünkü yapılıp bitmiştir.
- Tüm ana eylemler (examined, took, slept, tested, showed, concluded) Past Simple; çünkü çalışma tamamlanmıştır.
- 'was limited' ve 'was stronger' edilgen/durum; 'to be'nin geçmiş biçimleri kullanılmış.
- Akademik anlatıda Past Simple nesnel, tamamlanmış bir aktarım tonu verir.
Akademik yazıda Past Simple özellikle yöntem ve bulguların anlatımında, tarihsel bağlamda ve tamamlanmış çalışmalara atıfta kullanılır. Bilimsel makalelerde deney adımları neredeyse her zaman Past Simple'dadır çünkü yapılıp bitmiştir.
- All main actions (examined, took, slept, tested, showed, concluded) Past Simple; because the work is completed.
- 'was limited' and 'was stronger' passive/state; the past forms of 'to be' are used.
- In academic narration, Past Simple gives an objective, completed transmission tone.
- Olay zinciri Past Simple ile ilerliyor: decided, packed, drove, arrived, welcomed, showed, ate, talked, watched, woke, walked, found, kept, rented, swam, stayed, changed, realised.
- 'the sun was setting' ve 'everyone else was still sleeping' — arka plan (past continuous) ile ana olay (past simple) birlikte; ayrıntı için Sürekli Geçmiş Zaman.
- 'didn't check', 'didn't miss', 'didn't swim' ve 'didn't need' olumsuzda did + yalın fiil kuralını gösteriyor: fiil -ed/-V2 almaz, yalın kalır.
- Düzensiz fiiller bol: drove, told, taught, ate, woke, found, kept, swam, drank, thought.
- 'tourists never visited' — 'never' ile Past Simple: geçmişte hiç olmayan tekrar; belirli geçmiş bağlamda present perfect değil Past Simple kullanılır.
- 'The water was cold, so I didn't swim' — 'was' (to be, durum) ile 'didn't swim' (ana fiil) aynı cümlede: to be did almaz, ana fiil didn't alır. İkisinin farkını net gösterir.
- 'made everything feel cosier' — 'made' (V2) + yalın 'feel': ettirgen kalıpta ikinci fiil yalın kalır, geçmişi yalnızca ilk fiil taşır.
- The chain of events progresses with Past Simple: decided, packed, drove, arrived, welcomed, showed, ate, talked, watched, woke, walked, found, kept, rented, swam, stayed, changed, realised.
- 'the sun was setting' and 'everyone else was still sleeping' — background (past continuous) with main event (past simple) together; for details see Continuous Past Tense.
- 'didn't check', 'didn't miss', 'didn't swim' and 'didn't need' show the rule of negative did + base verb: the verb does not take -ed/-V2, it remains in base form.
- Irregular verbs are abundant: drove, told, taught, ate, woke, found, kept, swam, drank, thought.
- 'tourists never visited' — 'never' with Past Simple: a repetition that never happened in the past; in a specific past context, Past Simple is used instead of present perfect.
- 'The water was cold, so I didn't swim' — 'was' (to be, state) with 'didn't swim' (main verb) in the same sentence: to be does not take did, the main verb takes didn't. This clearly shows the difference between the two.
- 'made everything feel cosier' — 'made' (V2) + base 'feel': in the causative structure, the second verb remains in base form, only the first verb carries the past tense.

Aşağıdaki sorular kural ezberini değil, anlamı yoklar. Cümlenin ne ima ettiğini düşün.
- "I lived in Berlin for two years." — Konuşan hâlâ Berlin'de mi yaşıyor?Hayır. Past Simple bitmişlik ima eder; artık orada yaşamıyor. Hâlâ yaşasaydı 'I have lived in Berlin for two years' derdi.
- "Did you ever try sushi?" ile "Have you ever tried sushi?" arasında ne fark hissedilir?İkisi de deneyimi sorar; ancak Past Simple biçimi genelde belirli/kapalı bir geçmiş bağlamı (ör. o gezide) düşündürür, present perfect ise 'hayatın boyunca herhangi bir zaman'ı sorar. (Amerikan konuşma dilinde Past Simple daha serbesttir.)
- "I wanted to ask you a favour." — Konuşan bu isteği geçmişte mi istiyordu?Hayır, istek şu ana ait. 'wanted' burada zaman değil, nezaket/mesafe katıyor; 'I want' daha doğrudan olurdu.
- "When did the film start?" cümlesinde film başladı mı?Evet; soru başlama anını soruyor. Film başlamış ve muhtemelen sürüyor ya da bitmiştir; 'start' olayı geçmişte gerçekleşti.
The following questions do not test rule memorization, but rather meaning. Think about what the sentence implies.
- "I lived in Berlin for two years." — Does the speaker still live in Berlin? No. Past Simple implies completion; they no longer live there. If they still lived there, they would say 'I have lived in Berlin for two years'.
- What is the difference felt between "Did you ever try sushi?" and "Have you ever tried sushi?"?Both ask about experience; however, the Past Simple form generally suggests a specific/closed past context (e.g., that trip), while the present perfect asks about 'any time in your life'. (In American spoken language, Past Simple is more flexible.)
- "I wanted to ask you a favour." — Did the speaker want this request in the past? No, the request pertains to the present. 'wanted' adds politeness/distance here; 'I want' would be more direct.
- In the sentence "When did the film start?" did the film start?Yes; the question asks about the moment of starting. The film has started and is likely still ongoing or has finished; 'start' occurred in the past.

Görev: Geçen hafta sonu yaptığın gerçek ya da hayalî bir günü anlat. 6-8 cümlelik kısa bir paragraf yaz ve olayları sırayla ver.
Rehber sorular: Nereye gittin? Kiminle? Ne yaptınız? Hava nasıldı? İyi vakit geçirdin mi? Bir aksilik oldu mu? Sonunda ne hissettin?
- Örnek paragrafLast Saturday, I met two old friends in the city centre. We had lunch at a small café and talked for hours. After that, we walked to the park and took some photos. It rained a little, but we didn't mind. In the evening, we watched a comedy film and laughed a lot. I didn't want the day to end. It was one of the best weekends I had this year.
Task: Describe a real or imaginary day you had last weekend. Write a short paragraph of 6-8 sentences and present the events in order.
Guiding questions: Where did you go? With whom? What did you do? What was the weather like? Did you have a good time? Did anything go wrong? How did you feel in the end?

Kavram kontrolü için sorular: "Is this finished or still happening?" (Past Simple mi, present perfect mi ayrımı için). "Do we know exactly when?" (belirli zaman testi). "Is this 'to be' or a normal verb?" (was/were vs did ayrımı için).
Etkinlik önerileri: (1) Find someone who... sınıf içi anket (Did you ever...?). (2) Resimli hikâye sıralama: karışık verilen cümleleri olay zincirine dizme. (3) Düzensiz fiil eşleştirme kartları (V1-V2 memory oyunu). (4) 'Alibi' rol oyunu: dedektif–şüpheli, tüm sorular Past Simple.
Concept check questions: "Is this finished or still happening?" (to distinguish between Past Simple and present perfect). "Do we know exactly when?" (specific time test). "Is this 'to be' or a normal verb?" (to distinguish between was/were vs did).
Activity suggestions: (1) Find someone who... classroom survey (Did you ever...?). (2) Picture story sequencing: arranging scrambled sentences into a narrative chain. (3) Irregular verb matching cards (V1-V2 memory game). (4) 'Alibi' role play: detective-suspect, all questions in Past Simple.
- Past Simple = bitmiş, çoğunlukla belirli geçmiş olay; Türkçe -di'li geçmiş.
- Düzenli fiil + -ed; düzensiz fiil V2 (ezber). Biçim tüm kişilerde aynı.
- Olumsuz: didn't + yalın fiil. Soru: Did + özne + yalın fiil. Fiil asla -ed almaz burada.
- 'to be' ayrıdır: was/were; did KULLANMAZ (wasn't/weren't; Was/Were...?).
- -ed yazımı: y→i, ünsüz ikizlenmesi, -e'ye sadece -d. Telaffuz üç türlü: /t/, /d/, /ɪd/.
- Zaman ifadeleri güçlü ipucu ama garanti değil; belirleyici olan bitmişlik ve bakış açısı.
- Belirli geçmiş → Past Simple; belirsiz/bugüne bağlı → Yakın Geçmiş; arka plan/süreklilik → Sürekli Geçmiş Zaman.
- İleri kullanım: nezaket/mesafe (I wanted...), gerçek-dışı koşul (If I knew...).
- Past Simple = finished, mostly specific past events; Turkish -di'li past.
- Regular verb + -ed; irregular verb V2 (memorize). The form is the same for all persons.
- Negative: didn't + base verb. Question: Did + subject + base verb. The verb never takes -ed here.
- 'to be' is separate: was/were; does NOT USE did (wasn't/weren't; Was/Were...?).
- -ed spelling: y→i, consonant doubling, -e only takes -d. Pronunciation has three types: /t/, /d/, /ɪd/.
- Time expressions are strong clues but not guaranteed; what matters is completion and perspective.
- Specific past → Past Simple; indefinite/dependent on today → Recent Past; background/continuity → Past Continuous Tense.
- Advanced usage: politeness/distance (I wanted...), unreal condition (If I knew...).
