İngilizcede her fiil aynı davranmaz. Fiillerin büyük bir kısmı bir eylemi (yapılan bir hareketi) anlatır: run, eat, write, build, jump. Bunlara eylem fiilleri (action / dynamic verbs) denir. Ama bir grup fiil hareketi değil, bir durumu anlatır: bilmek, sevmek, istemek, sahip olmak, inanmak. Bunlara durum fiilleri (stative / state verbs) diyoruz.
She is running (şu an koşuyor) — gözünde bir hareket görebilirsin, resmini çekebilirsin. Ama She knows French (Fransızca bilir) — burada canlandıracak bir hareket yok; bilmek zaten var olan bir hâl. Resmini çekemediğin şey büyük ihtimalle bir durum fiilidir ve -ing almaz.
Not every verb behaves the same in English. A large portion of verbs describes an action (a movement performed): run, eat, write, build, jump. These are called action verbs (action / dynamic verbs). But one group of verbs describes not a movement but a state : to know, to love, to want, to possess, to believe. These we call stative verbs (stative / state verbs).
The difference is this: action verbs begin, continue and end — you can observe them, take their photo. Stative verbs, however, are not a movement but a condition. When you say "I know the answer" you're not doing any movement; knowing is a state that exists in your mind. That is why stative verbs are normally not used in the continuous (-ing) form.
This topic is especially hard for a Turkish learner because in Turkish, stative verbs can also take the -yor suffix: "seni seviyorum", "biliyorum", "istiyorum". Our Turkish ear wants to carry this -yor into English as -ing. But in English these verbs don't take -ing. So recognizing this group is the key to choosing correctly between the, present simple and the present continuous .
A quick test helps: put "right now, this second" in front of the verb and picture it. She is running (running now) — you can see a movement, take its photo. But She knows French (knows French) — there's no movement to picture here; knowing is an already-existing state. What you can't photograph is most likely a stative verb and doesn't take -ing.
- Durum fiili (stative verb) bir hareketi değil, bir durumu anlatır: bilmek, sevmek, istemek, sahip olmak, inanmak.
- En temel kural: durum fiilleri normalde -ing biçimde kullanılmaz. I know ✓ / I am knowing ✗.
- Bu yüzden durum fiilleri genellikle geniş zaman (Geniş Zaman) ister, şimdiki zaman değil.
- Ana gruplar: duygu (love, like, hate), düşünce/bilgi (know, believe, understand), algı (see, hear, smell), sahiplik (have, own, belong), ölçüm/tanım (cost, weigh, contain).
- Türkçe tuzağı: Türkçedeki -yor eki ("seviyorum") seni yanıltmasın; İngilizce karşılığı I love, asla I am loving değil.
- Bazı fiiller çift doğalıdır: hem durum hem eylem anlamı taşır (have, think, see, taste, look, feel). Anlam değişince -ing serbest kalır.
- İleri seviyede, kural bilinçli bir şekilde bozulabilir: I'm loving this! gibi kalıplar geçicilik ve vurgu için özellikle kullanılır.
- Durum fiillerini tanımak, hem konuşurken hem yazarken doğal ve doğru İngilizce üretmenin görünmeyen temelidir.
- A stative verb (stative verb) describes not a movement but a state : to know, to love, to want, to possess, to believe.
- The most basic rule: stative verbs are normally not used in the -ing form. I know ✓ / I am knowing ✗.
- That's why stative verbs usually want the simple present (Present Simple), not the present continuous.
- Main groups: emotion (love, like, hate), thought/knowledge (know, believe, understand), perception (see, hear, smell), possession (have, own, belong), measurement/description (cost, weigh, contain).
- Turkish trap: don't let the Turkish -yor suffix ("seviyorum") mislead you; its English equivalent is I love, never I am loving .
- Some verbs are dual-natured: they carry both state and action meanings (have, think, see, taste, look, feel). When the meaning changes, -ing becomes free.
- At an advanced level, the rule can be deliberately broken: I'm loving this! such patterns are used specifically for temporariness and emphasis.
- Recognizing stative verbs is the invisible foundation of producing natural and correct English, both when speaking and writing.
Durum fiillerinin ayrı bir "kalıbı" yoktur; kuruluş meselesi aslında hangi zamanı seçtiğindir. Kural basittir: durum fiilini geniş zamanda (Geniş Zaman) çek, sürekli (-ing) biçime sokma.
Olumlu (Affirmative)
Formül: özne + fiil (geniş zaman). Üçüncü tekil şahısta (he/she/it) fiile -s / -es eklenir — bu bir çekim değil, geniş zamanın normal kuralıdır.
Olumsuz (Negative)
Formül: özne + do/does + not + fiil. Yardımcı fiil do/does ile olumsuzlanır; durum fiilinin kendisi yalın kalır.
Soru (Question)
Formül: Do/Does + özne + fiil ? Yardımcı fiil başa gelir.
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Do you like tea? | Yes, I do. | No, I don't. |
| Does she believe him? | Yes, she does. | No, she doesn't. |
| Do they own the house? | Yes, they do. | No, they don't. |
Stative verbs don't have a separate "pattern"; the matter of construction is really which tense you choose. The rule is simple: conjugate the stative verb in the simple present (Present Simple), don't put it into the continuous (-ing) form.
Affirmative
Formula: subject + verb (simple present). In the third person singular (he/she/it), the verb takes -s / -es — this isn't a special conjugation but the normal rule of the simple present.
Negative
Formula: subject + do/does + not + verb. It is negated with the auxiliary verb do/does ; the stative verb itself stays in its base form.
Question
Formula: Do/Does + subject + verb ? The auxiliary verb comes first.
| Question | Affirmative short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Do you like tea? | Yes, I do. | No, I don't. |
| Does she believe him? | Yes, she does. | No, she doesn't. |
| Do they own the house? | Yes, they do. | No, they don't. |
Durum fiilleri anlam gruplarına ayrılır. Bir fiilin bu gruplardan birine ait olduğunu görmek, onun neden -ing almadığını anlamanı kolaylaştırır. İşte en yaygından daha özele doğru gruplar.
1. Duygular ve Tercihler (Emotions & Preferences)
En sık grup: love, like, hate, dislike, want, wish, prefer, need, enjoy, adore, mind. Bir duygu "yapılmaz", hissedilir — bu yüzden -ing almaz.
2. Düşünce, Bilgi ve İnanç (Cognition & Belief)
Zihinsel durumlar: know, believe, think (=inanmak), understand, remember, forget, mean, doubt, suppose, realize, recognize, imagine (=sanmak).
3. Algı ve Duyular (Perception & Senses)
Duyusal durumlar: see, hear, smell, taste, feel. Bu grupta genellikle can ile kullanım daha doğaldır: I can see, I can hear.
4. Sahiplik ve Aitlik (Possession)
Sahip olma durumları: have (=sahip olmak), own, possess, belong, owe. Özellikle belong ve own asla -ing almaz.
5. Ölçüm, Tanım ve Nitelik (Measurement & Description)
Bir şeyin özelliğini/ölçüsünü bildiren durumlar: cost, weigh, measure, contain, consist of, seem, appear, resemble, matter, depend on, deserve, fit.
6. Görüş ve Tutum Bildiren Fiiller (Opinion & Attitude)
Bir fikri, katılımı ya da tutumu belirten durum fiilleri de vardır: agree, disagree, promise, refuse, deny, doubt, mind, care, matter. Bunlar da bir hareket değil zihinsel bir konumu anlatır, bu yüzden -ing almazlar. Konuşmada çok sık geçtikleri için Türk öğrencinin en çok -ing eklediği gizli gruptur.
Stative verbs fall into meaning groups. Seeing that a verb belongs to one of these groups makes it easier to understand why it doesn't take -ing. Here are the groups, from the most common to the more specific.
1. Emotions and Preferences (Emotions & Preferences)
The most common group: love, like, hate, dislike, want, wish, prefer, need, enjoy, adore, mind. An emotion isn't "done", it's felt — so it doesn't take -ing.
2. Thought, Knowledge and Belief (Cognition & Belief)
Mental states: know, believe, think (=to believe), understand, remember, forget, mean, doubt, suppose, realize, recognize, imagine (=to suppose).
3. Perception and Senses (Perception & Senses)
Sensory states: see, hear, smell, taste, feel. In this group, using them with can is usually more natural: I can see, I can hear.
4. Possession and Belonging (Possession)
States of possession: have (=to possess), own, possess, belong, owe. Especially belong and own never take -ing.
5. Measurement, Description and Quality (Measurement & Description)
States that state a thing's property/measure: cost, weigh, measure, contain, consist of, seem, appear, resemble, matter, depend on, deserve, fit.
6. Verbs of Opinion and Attitude (Opinion & Attitude)
There are also stative verbs that state an opinion, agreement or attitude: agree, disagree, promise, refuse, deny, doubt, mind, care, matter. These too describe not a movement but a mental position, so they don't take -ing. Because they occur so often in speech, they're the hidden group Turkish learners most often add -ing to.
Durum fiilleri normalde geniş zaman aldığı için, geniş zamanın sıklık zarflarıyla iyi anlaşırlar. Ama dikkat: bu kelimeler bir garanti değildir — asıl belirleyici, fiilin durum mu eylem mi olduğudur.
| İfade | Örnek | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|
| always / usually / often | I always want dessert. | Her zaman tatlı isterim. |
| never / rarely | He never believes rumors. | Söylentilere asla inanmaz. |
| right now / at the moment | I know the answer right now. | Şu an cevabı biliyorum. |
| these days / nowadays | She prefers tea these days. | Bu aralar çayı tercih ediyor. |
| genellikle zaman zarfsız | This box contains sugar. | Bu kutu şeker içeriyor. |
Since stative verbs normally take the simple present, they get along well with its frequency adverbs. But note: these words are not a guarantee — the real decider is whether the verb is a state or an action.
| Expression | Example | Turkish |
|---|---|---|
| always / usually / often | I always want dessert. | Her zaman tatlı isterim. |
| never / rarely | He never believes rumors. | Söylentilere asla inanmaz. |
| right now / at the moment | I know the answer right now. | Şu an cevabı biliyorum. |
| these days / nowadays | She prefers tea these days. | Bu aralar çayı tercih ediyor. |
| usually with no time adverb | This box contains sugar. | Bu kutu şeker içeriyor. |
Durum fiillerinin gücü, süreklilik fikrini kendi içlerinde taşımalarıdır. "I love you" sadece şu anı değil, süregelen bir hâli anlatır.
The power of stative verbs is that they carry the idea of continuity within themselves. "I love you" describes not just this moment but an ongoing state. That's why adding -ing as well is unnecessary. But in English, putting a verb deliberately into the -ing form adds a special colour to that state.
Emphasis on temporariness: Using a stative verb exceptionally in the -ing form implies that the state is specific to now, temporary .
Certainty and politeness: Some stative verbs (especially hope, wonder, think) in the -ing form give a more polite and soft tone.
Bu konunun Türk öğrenci için zor olmasının tek bir kökü var: Türkçede durum fiilleri de şimdiki zaman eki (-yor) alır. "Biliyorum", "istiyorum", "seviyorum", "inanıyorum" — hepsi -yor'lu. Bu yüzden beynimiz bu cümleleri İngilizceye çevirirken otomatik olarak -ing eklemeye çalışır. Oysa İngilizcede bu fiiller -ing almaz.
- Türkçe "seviyorum" → İngilizce I love (❌ I am loving değil).
- Türkçe "biliyorum" → İngilizce I know (❌ I am knowing değil).
- Türkçe "istiyorum" → İngilizce I want (❌ I am wanting değil).
- Türkçedeki -yor "hem şu an hem genel" anlamı taşır; İngilizce bu ayrımı fiil türüyle çözer, ek ile değil.
- Kural: Türkçe -yor'u gördüğünde otomatik -ing ekleme; önce fiilin durum mu eylem mi olduğuna bak.
There is a single root cause of why this topic is hard for a Turkish learner: in Turkish, stative verbs also take the present-tense suffix (-yor). "Biliyorum", "istiyorum", "seviyorum", "inanıyorum" — all have -yor. That's why our brain, when translating these sentences into English, automatically tries to add -ing. But in English these verbs don't take -ing.
- Turkish "seviyorum" → English I love (❌ not I am loving).
- Turkish "biliyorum" → English I know (❌ not I am knowing).
- Turkish "istiyorum" → English I want (❌ not I am wanting).
- The Turkish -yor carries both "now" and "general" meanings; English resolves this distinction through verb type, not a suffix.
- Rule: don't add -ing automatically when you see the Turkish -yor; first check whether the verb is a state or an action.
|---|---|---|
| Durum fiili + şu an | geniş zaman (Geniş Zaman) | I want it now. (❌ am wanting) |
| Eylem fiili + şu an devam eden | şimdiki zaman (Şimdiki Zaman) | I am eating now. |
| Durum fiili + genel gerçek | geniş zaman | Water contains oxygen. |
| Çift-doğalı fiil (eylem anlamı) | şimdiki zaman serbest | I'm having dinner. |
| Uzun süreli geçici eylem | yakın anlam (Sürekli Yakın Geçmiş) | I've been thinking about it. |
The topic of stative verbs is not a "tense" on its own, but a filter that affects almost every tense choice in the background. When building a sentence you first determine whether the verb is a state or an action; based on the answer you choose between the simple present and the present continuous . The table below shows side by side which structure is correct in the most common situations; note especially that with dual-nature verbs the decision is made by the verb's meaning.
| Situation | Correct structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Stative verb + now | simple present (Present Simple) | I want it now. (❌ am wanting) |
| Action verb + ongoing now | present continuous (Present Continuous) | I am eating now. |
| Stative verb + general truth | simple present | Water contains oxygen. |
| Dual-nature verb (action meaning) | present continuous is free | I'm having dinner. |
| Long, temporary action | closely related (Present Perfect Continuous) | I've been thinking about it. |
"Durum fiilleri -ing almaz" kuralının en önemli inceliği şudur: bazı fiiller iki anlamlıdır. Bir anlamda durum (state), başka bir anlamda eylem (action) olurlar. Anlam eyleme kaydığında -ing tamamen serbest kalır. Bunlara çift-doğalı fiiller denir.
| Fiil | Durum anlamı (-ing yok) | Eylem anlamı (-ing var) |
|---|---|---|
| have | sahip olmak: I have a car. | yaşamak/geçirmek: I'm having lunch. |
| think | inanmak/görüş: I think you're right. | kafa yormak: I'm thinking about it. |
| see | görmek/anlamak: I see the point. | buluşmak/görüşmek: I'm seeing the doctor. |
| taste | tadı olmak: It tastes sweet. | tadına bakmak: He's tasting the sauce. |
| feel | his/kanı: I feel it's wrong. | dokunarak yoklamak: I'm feeling the fabric. |
| look | görünmek: She looks tired. | bakmak: She's looking at the sky. |
| be | kalıcı özellik: He is kind. | geçici davranış: He is being rude today. |
| weigh | ağırlığı olmak: It weighs 2kg. | tartmak: The grocer is weighing it. |
İstisna 1: Duyu fiilleri ve "can"
Algı fiilleri (see, hear, smell, taste, feel) istem dışı çalışır: onları kasten "yapmayız", kendiliğinden olur. Bu yüzden İngilizce bunları -ing yerine çoğu zaman can ile kullanır. "Seni duyabiliyorum" için I am hearing you değil, I can hear you denir. can burada yeteneği değil, o anda gerçekleşen algıyı işaretler ve durumun sürekliliğini bozmadan "şu an" fikrini verir. Bu, kitabi kuralın günlük dildeki en pratik çözümüdür.
İstisna 2: Bilinçli -ing ile üslup esnetmesi
İkinci istisna bir hata değil, bir tercihtir. Konuşma dilinde bazı durum fiilleri (özellikle love, like, enjoy, be) o ana özgü canlılık ve coşku katmak için bilerek -ing biçime sokulur: I'm loving this!, You're being silly. Burada kural bozulmuş değildir; konuşan kişi kalıcı bir hâli değil, tam o andaki geçici bir deneyimi vurgulamak ister. Resmi ve akademik yazıda bundan kaçınılır; ama günlük İngilizceyi anlamak için tanınması şarttır.
The most important subtlety of the "stative verbs don't take -ing" rule is this: some verbs have two meanings. In one meaning they're a state, in another an action. When the meaning shifts to an action, -ing becomes completely free. These are called dual-nature verbs .
| Verb | State meaning (no -ing) | Action meaning (with -ing) |
|---|---|---|
| have | to possess: I have a car. | to experience/spend: I'm having lunch. |
| think | to believe/opinion: I think you're right. | to ponder: I'm thinking about it. |
| see | to see/understand: I see the point. | to meet: I'm seeing the doctor. |
| taste | to taste of: It tastes sweet. | to sample: He's tasting the sauce. |
| feel | feeling/opinion: I feel it's wrong. | to feel by touching: I'm feeling the fabric. |
| look | to appear: She looks tired. | to look at: She's looking at the sky. |
| be | permanent quality: He is kind. | temporary behaviour: He is being rude today. |
| weigh | to have weight: It weighs 2kg. | to weigh (measure): The grocer is weighing it. |
Exception 1: Sense verbs and "can"
Perception verbs (see, hear, smell, taste, feel) work involuntarily: we don't deliberately "do" them, they happen by themselves. That's why English often uses them with can instead of -ing. For "Seni duyabiliyorum", instead of I am hearing you one says I can hear you . Here can marks not ability but the perception happening at that moment, and it gives the idea of "now" without breaking the state's continuity. This is the most practical everyday solution to the textbook rule.
Exception 2: Stylistic stretching with deliberate -ing
The second exception is not a mistake but a choice. In colloquial speech some stative verbs (especially love, like, enjoy, be) are deliberately put into the -ing form to add liveliness and excitement specific to the moment: I'm loving this!, You're being silly. The rule isn't broken here; the speaker wants to emphasize not a permanent state but a temporary experience at that exact moment. In formal and academic writing this is avoided; but recognizing it is essential to understanding everyday English.
Akademik ve resmi yazıda durum fiilleri sıklıkla kullanılır çünkü bilgi, inanç, tanım ve nitelik bildirirler: appear, seem, consist of, contain, represent, indicate, correspond to, belong to, comprise. Bu fiiller geniş zamanda, -ing almadan kullanılır ve metne nesnel, tanımlayıcı bir ton verir. Resmi yazıda I'm loving gibi geçicilik kalıplarından kaçınılır.
- seem, consist of, contain, appear, depend on, believe, matter, represent, indicate, resemble, belong to, correspond to, comprise, deserve, suggest — hepsi durum fiilidir ve -ing almaz.
- Akademik metnin nesnel, tanımlayıcı tonu büyük ölçüde bu durum fiillerinden gelir; hepsi geniş zamanda kullanılmış.
- consist of / comprise / correspond to gibi çok-kelimeli durum fiilleri özellikle tanım ve sınıflama cümlelerinde işe yarar.
In academic and formal writing, stative verbs are used frequently because they state knowledge, belief, definition and quality: appear, seem, consist of, contain, represent, indicate, correspond to, belong to, comprise. These verbs are used in the simple present, without -ing, and give the text an objective, descriptive tone. In formal writing, I'm loving temporariness patterns like this are avoided.
- seem, consist of, contain, appear, depend on, believe, matter, represent, indicate, resemble, belong to, correspond to, comprise, deserve, suggest — all are stative verbs and don't take -ing.
- The objective, descriptive tone of the academic text comes largely from these stative verbs; all are used in the simple present.
- Multi-word stative verbs like consist of / comprise / correspond to are especially useful in definition and classification sentences.
- loves, feels, hears, smell, understand, thinks, looks, seems, has, wants, knows, believes, belongs, weighs, fit, matters, costs, sees, recognizes, makes sense, remembers, understands, appears, prefers, needs, owns, likes, trusts — hepsi durum fiili, geniş zamanda, -ing yok.
- "she is checking" ve "she is looking for" gerçek fiziksel eylemler olduğu için şimdiki zamanda -ing almış: metin durum ile eylemin farkını yan yana canlı gösteriyor.
- can smell / can hear: algı fiilleri sık sık can ile gelir; -ing yerine bu yapı tercih edilir.
- belong ve own hiçbir anlamda -ing almaz: "belongs to the kitchen", "owns this victory".
- weigh ve cost burada ölçüm/değer durumu: "it weighs more", "costs a fortune" — tartma/ödeme eylemi değil.
- see iki kez farklı anlamda: "she sees a loose joint" (gözle görmek) ve "I see" (anlamak) — ikisi de durum, ikisi de -ing almaz.
- make sense, matter, seem, appear: metnin akıcı, doğal tonunu kuran görünmeyen durum fiilleri.
- loves, feels, hears, smell, understand, thinks, looks, seems, has, wants, knows, believes, belongs, weighs, fit, matters, costs, sees, recognizes, makes sense, remembers, understands, appears, prefers, needs, owns, likes, trusts — all stative verbs, in the simple present, no -ing.
- "she is checking" and "she is looking for" took -ing in the present continuous because they're real physical actions: the text vividly shows the difference between state and action side by side.
- can smell / can hear: perception verbs often come with can; this structure is preferred instead of -ing.
- belong and own take -ing in no sense: "belongs to the kitchen", "owns this victory".
- weigh and cost here are measurement/value states: "it weighs more", "costs a fortune" — not a weighing/paying action.
- see twice in different senses: "she sees a loose joint" (to see with the eyes) and "I see" (to understand) — both states, both don't take -ing.
- make sense, matter, seem, appear: the invisible stative verbs that build the text's fluent, natural tone.

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı değil, anlamı yoklar. Amaç, fiilin durum mu eylem mi olduğunu ve bunun neden zamanı belirlediğini görmendir.
- "I am knowing the answer" neden yanlıştır?Çünkü know bir durum (zihinsel) fiilidir; bilmek bir hareket değil bir hâldir, bu yüzden -ing almaz. Doğrusu: I know the answer.
- "I have a car" ile "I'm having lunch" arasındaki fark nedir?İlkinde have = sahip olmak (durum), -ing yok. İkincisinde have = yemek yemek (eylem), bu yüzden -ing serbest. Fiilin anlamı değişince davranışı da değişir.
- "You are being rude" cümlesinde be neden -ing almış?Çünkü burada be kalıcı bir özelliği değil, şu ana özgü geçici bir davranışı anlatıyor: "şu an kaba davranıyorsun". Kalıcı özellik olsaydı: You are rude.
- "right now" gördüğünde her zaman şimdiki zaman mı kullanılır?Hayır. Zaman ifadesi değil, fiilin türü belirler. Fiil durum fiiliyse yine geniş zaman: I want it right now, not "I am wanting".
- "The soup tastes good" ile "The chef is tasting the soup" nasıl farklıdır?İlkinde taste = tadı olmak (durum), -ing yok. İkincisinde taste = tadına bakmak (eylem), -ing var. Aynı fiil, iki farklı doğa.
The questions below test not the rule but the meaning . The goal is for you to see whether the verb is a state or an action and why that determines the tense.
- Why is "I am knowing the answer" wrong?Because know is a stative (mental) verb; knowing is not a movement but a state, so it doesn't take -ing. Correct: I know the answer.
- What is the difference between "I have a car" and "I'm having lunch"?In the first, have = to possess (state), no -ing. In the second, have = to eat (action), so -ing is free. When the verb's meaning changes, its behaviour changes too.
- In "You are being rude", why did be take -ing?Because here be describes not a permanent quality but a temporary behaviour specific to now: "you're behaving rudely right now". If it were a permanent quality: You are rude.
- When you see "right now", is the present continuous always used? No. The type of the verb decides, not the time expression. If the verb is a stative verb, still the simple present: I want it right now, not "I am wanting".
- How do "The soup tastes good" and "The chef is tasting the soup" differ? In the first, taste = to taste of (state), no -ing. In the second, taste = to sample (action), with -ing. The same verb, two different natures.

Görev: Sevdiğin bir yeri (bir kafe, oda, şehir) 6-8 cümleyle anlat. En az 5 farklı durum fiili kullan (love, know, prefer, belong, seem, contain, look, need...) ve içine bir tane çift-doğalı fiili eylem anlamıyla (-ing) yerleştir. Böylece hem durumu hem farkı gösterebilirsin.
- Rehber soru 1: Orayı neden seviyorsun? (love, like, prefer)
- Rehber soru 2: Orası sana nasıl görünüyor / neye benziyor? (seem, look, resemble)
- Rehber soru 3: Orada ne var / neye ihtiyaç duyuyorsun? (have, contain, need)
- Rehber soru 4: Şu an orada ne yapıyorsun? (bir eylem fiili veya çift-doğalı fiili -ing ile)
Türkçe: Büyükannemin mutfağını çok severim. Her zaman sıcak görünür ve taze ekmek kokar. Her köşesini bilirim ve o eski ahşap masa büyük dedeme ait. Bu oda yüzlerce küçük anıyı içerir. Şu an bunu yazarken orada çay içiyorum. Başka hiçbir şeye ihtiyacım yok — burası ev gibi hissettiriyor.
Not: love, seem, smell, know, belong, contain, need, feel durum fiilleri; "I'm having tea" ise eylem anlamıyla -ing almış.
Task: Describe a place you love (a café, room, city) in 6-8 sentences. Use at least 5 different stative verbs (love, know, prefer, belong, seem, contain, look, need...) and place one dual-nature verb in the action sense (-ing) inside it. That way you can show both the state and the difference.
- Guiding question 1: Why do you love it? (love, like, prefer)
- Guiding question 2: How does it look / what does it resemble to you? (seem, look, resemble)
- Guiding question 3: What is there / what do you need there? (have, contain, need)
- Guiding question 4: What are you doing there right now? (an action verb or a dual-nature verb with -ing)
Türkçe: Büyükannemin mutfağını çok severim. Her zaman sıcak görünür ve taze ekmek kokar. Her köşesini bilirim ve o eski ahşap masa büyük dedeme ait. Bu oda yüzlerce küçük anıyı içerir. Şu an bunu yazarken orada çay içiyorum. Başka hiçbir şeye ihtiyacım yok — burası ev gibi hissettiriyor.
Note: love, seem, smell, know, belong, contain, need, feel are stative verbs; "I'm having tea" took -ing with the action meaning.
Kavram kontrolü için sorular: "Can you SEE knowing? Is it an action or a state?" gibi sorularla öğrencinin fiili sınıflamasını sağla. "Right now I want water — is 'want' an action?" sorusu, zaman ifadesinin değil fiil türünün belirleyici olduğunu fark ettirir. Çift-doğalı fiillerde her zaman anlam sor: "What does 'have' mean here — to own, or to experience?"
Etkinlik önerisi: İki sütunlu bir kart oyunu — bir sütunda durum fiilleri, diğerinde eylem fiilleri. Öğrenciler fiilleri hızlıca sınıflar. İleri seviyede (B2-C1) çift-doğalı fiil kartları ekle; öğrenciler her fiil için iki cümle üretir (biri durum, biri eylem). I'm loving it gibi bilinçli istisnaları ise ancak temel kural oturduktan sonra, üslup meselesi olarak tanıt — yoksa öğrenci "o zaman -ing de olur" diye genelleştirir.
Concept-checking questions: Use questions like "Can you SEE knowing? Is it an action or a state?" to get the student to classify the verb. The question "Right now I want water — is 'want' an action?" makes them realize that the verb type, not the time expression, is decisive. With dual-nature verbs, always ask the meaning: "What does 'have' mean here — to own, or to experience?"
Activity suggestion: A two-column card game — stative verbs in one column, action verbs in the other. Students quickly classify the verbs. At an advanced level (B2-C1), add dual-nature verb cards; students produce two sentences for each verb (one state, one action). I'm loving it Introduce deliberate exceptions like this only after the basic rule has settled, as a matter of style — otherwise the student generalizes "then -ing is fine too".
- Durum fiilleri (stative verbs) hareketi değil, bir durumu/hâli anlatır: bilmek, sevmek, istemek, sahip olmak, inanmak.
- Ana kural: durum fiilleri normalde -ing biçimde kullanılmaz; genellikle geniş zaman (Geniş Zaman) alırlar.
- Ana gruplar: duygu (love, want), bilgi (know, believe), algı (see, hear), sahiplik (have, belong), ölçüm/tanım (cost, weigh, contain).
- Türkçe tuzağı: -yor eki ("seviyorum") seni yanıltmasın — İngilizce karşılığı I love, asla I am loving değil.
- Akılda tutma: Fotoğraf Testi (fotoğrafı çekilmeyen fiil = -ing yok) ve 5 Parmak Kuralı (Duygu-Bilgi-Algı-Sahiplik-Ölçüm) iki hızlı hatırlatıcıdır.
- Zaman ifadesine değil, fiilin türüne bak: right now bile bir durum fiilini -ing yapmaz.
- Çift-doğalı fiiller (have, think, see, taste, look, be) anlam değişince -ing serbest bırakır: I have a car ↔ I'm having lunch.
- İleri kullanımda kural bilinçli esnetilir (I'm loving it, You're being silly) — geçicilik ve vurgu için; resmi yazıda kaçınılır.
- Sonraki adım için şimdiki zamanı ve geniş zamanı bu bilgiyle birlikte gözden geçir.
- Stative verbs describe not movement but a state/condition : to know, to love, to want, to possess, to believe.
- Main rule: stative verbs are normally not used in the -ing form; they usually take the simple present (Present Simple).
- Main groups: emotion (love, want), knowledge (know, believe), perception (see, hear), possession (have, belong), measurement/description (cost, weigh, contain).
- Turkish trap: don't let the -yor suffix ("seviyorum") mislead you — its English equivalent is I love, never I am loving .
- Keep in mind: the Photo Test (a verb you can't photograph = no -ing) and the 5-Finger Rule (Emotion-Knowledge-Perception-Possession-Measurement) are two quick reminders.
- Look not at the time expression but at the type of the verb : right now doesn't make a stative verb -ing.
- Dual-nature verbs (have, think, see, taste, look, be) free up -ing when the meaning changes: I have a car ↔ I'm having lunch.
- In advanced use the rule is deliberately stretched (I'm loving it, You're being silly) — for temporariness and emphasis; avoided in formal writing.
- For the next step, review the present continuous and the simple present together with this knowledge.
