Soru eki yoktur; bunun yerine yardımcı fiil öznenin önüne alınır ve kelime sırası değişir: You like tea → Do you like tea?
İngilizcenin çözümü: yardımcı fiili öne al
İngilizce, soru yaparken cümledeki yardımcı fiili (auxiliary verb) öznenin önüne taşır. Yardımcı fiil, cümlenin ana fiiline eşlik eden 'işlevsel' bir fiildir: am, is, are, was, were, do, does, did, have, has, will, can, could, should gibi. Bu yer değiştirmeye dilbilimde devriklik (inversion) denir.
İki büyük soru ailesi
- Evet/Hayır soruları (Yes/No questions): Cevabı 'evet' ya da 'hayır' olan sorular. Do you speak English? — Yes, I do. / No, I don't.
- Wh- soruları (Wh- questions): Bilgi isteyen sorular; what, where, when, why, who, which, whose, how ile başlar. Where do you live? — In Ankara.
Bu konu bize İngilizcenin cümle yapısındaki temel bir gerçeği öğretir: İngilizce, dilbilgisi 'işini' çoğu zaman yardımcı fiiller üzerinden yürütür. Soru yapmak, olumsuz yapmak (don't), vurgu vermek (I DO like it) ve kısa cevap vermek (Yes, I do) hep aynı yardımcı fiil sistemine dayanır.
Asking questions is one of the most basic and most frequently used functions of a language. Learning an address, asking someone's name, wondering about a price, having an interview, understanding a text in an exam — all of these rely on question structures. The logic of forming questions in English follows a path completely different from Turkish, so this topic is both very necessary and, at first, confusing for the Turkish learner.
Making a question in Turkish is very easy: you build the sentence, add a question particle (-mı/-mi/-mu/-mü) to the end, and raise your intonation. Sen çay seversin. becomes Sen çay sever misin? . The positions of the words barely change; only a small particle is added. In English, however, there is no suchquestion particle. Instead, we change the order of the words.
TURKISH
A question particle (-mı/-mi/-mu/-mü) is added to the end of the sentence and the intonation rises. The word order barely changes: Sen çay seversin → Sen çay sever misin?
ENGLISH
There is no question particle; instead the auxiliary verb is moved in front of the subject and the word order changes: You like tea → Do you like tea?
English's solution: bring the auxiliary to the front
When forming a question, English moves the auxiliary verb in the sentence in front of the subject. An auxiliary is a 'functional' verb that accompanies the main verb of the sentence: and the like. In linguistics this swap is called inversion (inversion) .
The two big question families
- Yes/No questions: Questions whose answer is 'yes' or 'no'. Do you speak English? — Yes, I do. / No, I don't.
- Wh- questions: Questions that ask for information; they begin with what, where, when, why, who, which, whose, how. Where do you live? — In Ankara.
This topic teaches us a basic truth about English sentence structure: English usually does its grammatical 'work' through auxiliary verbs . Making questions, making negatives (don't), giving emphasis (I DO like it) and giving short answers (Yes, I do) all rely on the same auxiliary-verb system.
- İngilizcede soru, yardımcı fiili öznenin önüne alarak kurulur (devriklik). Türkçedeki -mi ekinin karşılığı yoktur.
- Cümlede zaten bir yardımcı fiil varsa (be, modal, have), onu öne alırsın: Is she here? Can you help? Have you finished?
- Cümlede görünür yardımcı yoksa (Present/Past Simple), do/does/did yardımcısını eklersin: Do you know? Does he work? Did they leave?
- does veya did kullandığında ana fiil yalın kalır: Does she like (likes değil), Did you go (went değil).
- Evet/Hayır soruları yardımcı fiille başlar; cevabı evet/hayırdır. Kısa cevap: Yes, I do. / No, I don't.
- Wh- soruları bir soru kelimesiyle başlar (what, where, when, why, who, how) ve bilgi ister.
- Wh- sorusunun kalıbı: Wh- + yardımcı fiil + özne + ana fiil? — Where do you live?
- Özne sorusu istisnası: Soru kelimesi cümlenin öznesiyse (Who? What?), do/does/did KULLANILMAZ ve devriklik olmaz: Who called you?
- Konuşma dilinde edat çoğu zaman sona gider: What are you looking at? Where are you from?
- Kibar/dolaylı sorularda kalıp değişir ve devriklik kaybolur: Could you tell me where the station is? (…where is the station değil).
- In English a question is formed by moving the auxiliary in front of the subject (inversion). There is no equivalent of the Turkish -mi particle.
- If the sentence already has an auxiliary (be, modal, have), you bring it to the front: Is she here? Can you help? Have you finished?
- If the sentence has no visible auxiliary (Present/Past Simple), you add the do/does/did auxiliary: Do you know? Does he work? Did they leave?
- does or did when you use it, the main verb stays in the base form : Does she like (not likes), Did you go (not went).
- Yes/No questions begin with an auxiliary; the answer is yes/no. Short answer: Yes, I do. / No, I don't.
- Wh- questions begin with a question word (what, where, when, why, who, how) and ask for information.
- The pattern of a Wh- question: Wh- + auxiliary + subject + main verb? — Where do you live?
- Subject-question exception: If the question word is the subject of the sentence (Who? What?), do/does/did are NOT used and there is no inversion: Who called you?
- In spoken language the preposition often goes to the end : What are you looking at? Where are you from?
- In polite/indirect questions the pattern changes and inversion disappears: Could you tell me where the station is? (not ...where is the station).
Soru kurmanın tek bir altın kuralı vardır ve her şey ona dayanır: yardımcı fiili öznenin önüne al. Geriye kalan tek soru şudur: 'Cümlede zaten bir yardımcı fiil var mı, yoksa 'do/does/did' getirmem mi gerekiyor?' Aşağıda üç temel duruma bakalım.
Durum 1 — Yardımcı var
Cümlede be, bir modal ya da have zaten varsa onu öznenin önüne al. She is ready → Is she ready?
Durum 2 — Yardımcı yok
Görünür yardımcı yoksa do/does/did devreye girer, ana fiil yalın kalır. You work → Do you work?
Durum 3 — Wh- sorusu
Soru kelimesini en başa koy, ardından aynı devriklik kuralını uygula. Where do you live?
Durum 1: Cümlede zaten yardımcı fiil var (be / modal / have)
Cümlede am/is/are/was/were, bir modal (can, will, should, must...) ya da have/has (perfect) varsa, ekstra bir şey eklemeye gerek yoktur. Var olan yardımcıyı öne alırsın. Formül: Yardımcı + özne + (ana fiil) + ...?
Durum 2: Görünür yardımcı yok → do/does/did devreye girer
Present Simple ve Past Simple cümlelerinde (be dışında) görünür bir yardımcı yoktur: You like tea. He works here. They came. Bu cümleleri soruya çevirmek için İngilizce bir yardımcı fiili ödünç alır: do/does/did. Zamana ve özneye göre seçilir:
| Zaman / Özne | Yardımcı | Örnek soru | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present, I/you/we/they | do | Do you work here? | Burada mı çalışıyorsun? |
| Present, he/she/it | does | Does she work here? | O burada mı çalışıyor? |
| Past, tüm özneler | did | Did they work here? | Burada mı çalıştılar? |
Durum 3: Wh- soruları — soru kelimesini en başa koy
Bilgi soruları, Evet/Hayır sorusunun tam önüne bir soru kelimesi eklenerek yapılır. Formül: Wh- + yardımcı + özne + ana fiil? Yani önce 'Do you live?' gibi Evet/Hayır iskeletini kur, sonra başına 'Where' ekle: Where do you live?
Kısa cevaplar
İngilizcede Evet/Hayır sorusuna sadece 'Yes' ya da 'No' demek çoğu zaman kaba veya eksik durur. Doğal cevap, soruda kullanılan yardımcı fiili tekrar eder. Türkçede bütün cümleyi tekrarlamak yerine 'Evet, ederim / Hayır, etmem' deriz; İngilizce de aynı mantıkla yardımcı fiili tutar.
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Do you like it? | Yes, I do. | No, I don't. |
| Does he drive? | Yes, he does. | No, he doesn't. |
| Did they win? | Yes, they did. | No, they didn't. |
| Are you ready? | Yes, I am. | No, I'm not. |
| Can she cook? | Yes, she can. | No, she can't. |
| Have you eaten? | Yes, I have. | No, I haven't. |
There is a single golden rule for forming questions, and everything rests on it: move the auxiliary in front of the subject. The only remaining question is: 'Does the sentence already have an auxiliary, or do I need to bring in do/does/did?' Let's look at the three basic cases below.
Case 1 — There is an auxiliary
If the sentence already has be, a modal or have , bring it in front of the subject. She is ready → Is she ready?
Case 2 — No auxiliary
If there is no visible auxiliary, do/does/did steps in, and the main verb stays in the base form. You work → Do you work?
Case 3 — Wh- question
Put the question word at the very front, then apply the same inversion rule. Where do you live?
Case 1: The sentence already has an auxiliary verb (be / modal / have)
If the sentence already has am/is/are/was/were, a modal (can, will, should, must...) or have/has (perfect), there is no need to add anything extra. You bring the existing auxiliary to the front. Formula: Auxiliary + subject + (main verb) + ...?
Case 2: No visible auxiliary → do/does/did step in
In Present Simple and Past Simple sentences (apart from be) there is no visible auxiliary: You like tea. He works here. They came. To turn these sentences into questions, English borrowsan auxiliary: do/does/did. It is chosen according to tense and subject:
| Tense / Subject | Auxiliary | Example question | Turkish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present, I/you/we/they | do | Do you work here? | Burada mı çalışıyorsun? |
| Present, he/she/it | does | Does she work here? | O burada mı çalışıyor? |
| Past, all subjects | did | Did they work here? | Burada mı çalıştılar? |
Case 3: Wh- questions — put the question word at the very front
Information questions are made by adding a question word right in front of a Yes/No question. Formula: Wh- + auxiliary + subject + main verb? That is, first build the Yes/No skeleton like 'Do you live?', then add 'Where' to the front: Where do you live?
Short answers
In English, answering a Yes/No question with just 'Yes' or 'No' often sounds rude or incomplete. The natural answer repeats the auxiliary verb used in the question. Instead of repeating the whole sentence, in Turkish we say 'Evet, ederim / Hayır, etmem'; English keeps the auxiliary with the same logic.
| Question | Positive short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Do you like it? | Yes, I do. | No, I don't. |
| Does he drive? | Yes, he does. | No, he doesn't. |
| Did they win? | Yes, they did. | No, they didn't. |
| Are you ready? | Yes, I am. | No, I'm not. |
| Can she cook? | Yes, she can. | No, she can't. |
| Have you eaten? | Yes, I have. | No, I haven't. |
Can you...? Could you...? Would you like...? kalıpları aslında bilgi değil, bir eylem ya da onay ister. Bu, İngilizcede nezaketin temel taşıdır.
4. Şaşkınlık, ilgi ve sohbeti sürdürme
Kısa sorular sohbette tepki vermek ve ilgi göstermek için kullanılır. Bunlara 'echo questions' (yankı soruları) da denir; muhatabın söylediğini kısa bir soruyla karşılarsın.
5. Miktar, sıklık ve derece sorma (how kalıpları)
how kelimesi tek başına 'nasıl' anlamı verirken, bir sıfat ya da zarfla birleşerek miktar, sıklık, yaş, mesafe, süre gibi çok çeşitli bilgileri sorar. Türkçede bunlar ayrı ayrı kelimelerle (kaç, ne kadar, ne sıklıkla) karşılanır.
| Kalıp | Ne sorar | Örnek | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|---|
| How many | sayılabilen miktar | How many books do you have? | Kaç kitabın var? |
| How much | sayılamayan miktar / fiyat | How much is it? | Ne kadar / kaç para? |
| How often | sıklık | How often do you exercise? | Ne sıklıkla spor yaparsın? |
| How long | süre / uzunluk | How long does it take? | Ne kadar sürer? |
| How old | yaş | How old is your brother? | Kardeşin kaç yaşında? |
| How far | mesafe | How far is the station? | İstasyon ne kadar uzakta? |
The question structure is not a single pattern but a tool serving many different communication needs. Below we move from the most common uses to more special ones; for each there are examples from different contexts.
1. Asking for information (most common)
The primary job of the question structure is to get information: place, time, person, reason, method. This is the natural home of Wh- questions.
2. Getting Yes/No confirmation
Yes/No questions are used to confirm whether a piece of information is true, whether something is possible, or whether someone wants something.
3. Requests and offers (the polite function)
The question form is often used to soften a command. Can you...? Could you...? Would you like...? patterns actually ask not for information but for an action or approval. This is a cornerstone of politeness in English.
4. Surprise, interest and keeping the conversation going
Short questions are used to react and show interest in conversation. These are also called 'echo questions'; you respond to what the other person said with a short question.
5. Asking about quantity, frequency and degree (how patterns)
The word how on its own means 'how', but combined with an adjective or adverb it asks about a wide range of information: quantity, frequency, age, distance, duration. In Turkish these are covered by separate words (kaç, ne kadar, ne sıklıkla).
| Pattern | What it asks | Example | Turkish |
|---|---|---|---|
| How many | countable quantity | How many books do you have? | Kaç kitabın var? |
| How much | uncountable quantity / price | How much is it? | Ne kadar / kaç para? |
| How often | frequency | How often do you exercise? | Ne sıklıkla spor yaparsın? |
| How long | duration / length | How long does it take? | Ne kadar sürer? |
| How old | age | How old is your brother? | Kardeşin kaç yaşında? |
| How far | distance | How far is the station? | İstasyon ne kadar uzakta? |
Wh- sorularında doğru soru kelimesini seçmek, istenen bilginin türünü belirler. Aşağıdaki tablo temel soru kelimelerini ve tipik kullanımlarını gösterir. Bunlar 'ipucu kelimeleri'dir: bir soru kelimesini gördüğünde nasıl bir cevabın beklendiğini anlarsın.
| Soru kelimesi | Ne sorar | Örnek | Beklenen cevap |
|---|---|---|---|
| What | şey / nesne | What is your name? | My name is Ela. |
| Where | yer | Where do you work? | In a hospital. |
| When | zaman | When does it open? | At nine. |
| Why | sebep | Why are you sad? | Because I lost my keys. |
| Who | kişi | Who is that man? | He's my uncle. |
| Which | seçenekler arası | Which shirt do you prefer? | The blue one. |
| Whose | aidiyet / kime ait | Whose bag is this? | It's mine. |
| How | yöntem / durum | How do you feel? | I feel great. |
In Wh- questions, choosing the right question word determines the type of information wanted. The table below shows the basic question words and their typical uses. These are 'clue words': when you see a question word you understand what kind of answer is expected.
| Question word | What it asks | Example | Expected answer |
|---|---|---|---|
| What | thing / object | What is your name? | My name is Ela. |
| Where | place | Where do you work? | In a hospital. |
| When | time | When does it open? | At nine. |
| Why | reason | Why are you sad? | Because I lost my keys. |
| Who | person | Who is that man? | He's my uncle. |
| Which | among options | Which shirt do you prefer? | The blue one. |
| Whose | belonging / to whom | Whose bag is this? | It's mine. |
| How | method / state | How do you feel? | I feel great. |
Aynı bilgiyi soran iki soru, farklı modal ya da yapı seçimiyle çok farklı bir ton taşıyabilir. İngilizcede soru kurmayı öğrenmek sadece 'doğru yapı'yı değil, 'doğru nezaket düzeyi'ni de seçmeyi içerir. Aşağıda kesinlik, nezaket, uzaklık ve vurgu inceliklerine bakalım.
Nezaket bir merdivendir: yukarı çıktıkça daha dolaylı ve daha kibar olursun. Can you…? gündelik, Could you…? kibar, Would you mind…? ise en resmî tondur.
Nezaket merdiveni: can < could < would
Aynı ricayı üç farklı kibarlık düzeyinde sorabilirsin. Can you...? gündelik ve doğrudandır; Could you...? daha kibardır; Would you mind...? en resmi ve nazik olanıdır. Geçmiş zaman biçimi (could, would) burada geçmişi değil, mesafeyi ve nezaketi gösterir.
Doğrudan vs dolaylı soru: mesafe ve nezaket
Bir yabancıya doğrudan Where is the station? demek dilbilgisel olarak doğrudur ama biraz sert durabilir. Dolaylı soru kalıbı (Could you tell me where the station is?) hem daha kibardır hem de İngiliz kültüründe daha doğaldır.
Two questions asking for the same information can carry a very different tone depending on the choice of modal or structure. Learning to form questions in English involves choosing not only the 'right structure' but also the 'right level of politeness'. Below let's look at nuances of certainty, politeness, distance and emphasis.
Politeness is a ladder: the higher you go, the more indirect and more polite you become. Can you…? is everyday, Could you…? is polite, Would you mind…? is the most formal tone.
The politeness ladder: can < could < would
You can ask the same request at three different levels of politeness. Can you...? is everyday and direct; Could you...? is more polite; Would you mind...? is the most formal and courteous. The past-tense forms (could, would) here show not the past but distance and politeness .
Direct vs indirect question: distance and politeness
Saying to a stranger, directly, Where is the station? is grammatically correct but can sound a bit blunt. The indirect question pattern (Could you tell me where the station is?) is both more polite and more natural in English culture. In an indirect question inversion disappears, the sentence returns to plain order.
Using 'do' for emphasis (a power beyond questions)
The 'do' auxiliary is also used, beyond questions, for emphasis . Adding 'do' to an affirmative sentence gives the sentence a 'really, truly' meaning. This is a different job of the same auxiliary as the 'do' in questions, and it shows how central English's auxiliary-verb system is.
Türkçe ve İngilizce soru kurarken taban tabana zıt stratejiler kullanır. Bu farkı net görmek, Türk öğrencinin en sık hatalarının kökünü anlamasını sağlar.
- Türkçe: Soru bir ek (-mı/-mi) ve ses tonuyla yapılır; kelime sırası neredeyse değişmez. Geliyor musun?
- İngilizce: Soru kelime sırası değiştirilerek (yardımcı fiil öne alınarak) yapılır; ek yoktur. Are you coming?
- Türkçe: Yardımcı fiil kavramı soru için gerekmez; fiil kendi başına çekilir.
- İngilizce: Görünür yardımcı yoksa 'do/does/did' yoktan getirilir; bu, Türkçede karşılığı olmayan bir adımdır.
- Türkçe: Soru kelimesi (kim, ne, nerede) cümlenin farklı yerlerinde durabilir. Sen dün kimi gördün?
- İngilizce: Wh- soru kelimesi neredeyse her zaman cümlenin en başındadır. Who did you see yesterday?
Turkish and English use diametrically opposite strategies for forming questions. Seeing this difference clearly lets the Turkish learner understand the root of their most frequent mistakes.
- Turkish: A question is made with a particle (-mı/-mi) and intonation; the word order barely changes. Geliyor musun?
- English: Question by changing the word order (bringing the auxiliary to the front); there is no particle. Are you coming?
- Turkish: The concept of an auxiliary verb is not needed for questions; the verb is conjugated by itself.
- English: If there is no visible auxiliary, 'do/does/did' is brought in from nothing; this is a step with no equivalent in Turkish.
- Turkish: The question word (who, what, where) can stand in different places in the sentence. Sen dün kimi gördün?
- English: The Wh- question word is almost always at the very beginning. of the sentence.
Soru yapısı, İngilizcenin yardımcı fiil sisteminin bir parçasıdır ve birkaç akraba konuyla karıştırılabilir. Aşağıdaki tablo bu yapıları ayırır.
| Yapı | İşlev | Örnek | Fark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Soru (question) | Bilgi/onay ister | Do you like it? | Yardımcı fiil öne gelir, cevap beklenir. |
| Soru eki (tag) | Onay/teyit arar | You like it, don't you? | Cümle sonuna eklenir; bkz. Soru Ekleri. |
| Olumsuz cümle | Bilgiyi reddeder | You don't like it. | Aynı yardımcı ama devriklik yok, 'not' eklenir. |
| Dolaylı soru | Kibar/gömülü soru | I asked if you liked it. | Devriklik kaybolur, düz sıraya döner. |
Özellikle soru ile soru eki (question tag) sık karıştırılır. İkisi de aynı yardımcı fiil mantığını kullanır ama işlevleri farklıdır: gerçek soru sıfırdan bilgi ister; soru eki ise zaten tahmin ettiğin bir şeyin onayını arar. Bu ikinci yapıyı ayrıntısıyla bir sonraki konuda, Soru Ekleri bölümünde işleyeceğiz.
The question structure is part of English's auxiliary-verb system and can be confused with a few related topics. The table below separates these structures.
| Structure | Function | Example | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Question | Asks for information/confirmation | Do you like it? | The auxiliary comes to the front, an answer is expected. |
| Question tag | Seeks approval/confirmation | You like it, don't you? | Added to the end of the sentence; see Question Tags. |
| Negative sentence | Rejects information | You don't like it. | Same auxiliary but no inversion, 'not' is added. |
| Indirect question | Polite/embedded question | I asked if you liked it. | Inversion disappears, it returns to plain order. |
In particular, questions and question tags are often confused. Both use the same auxiliary-verb logic but their functions differ: a real question asks for information from scratch; a question tag seeks confirmation of something you already guess. We'll cover this second structure in detail in the next topic, Question Tags in that section.
Aşağıdaki hatalar Türk öğrencilerde neredeyse istisnasız görülür. Her birinde neyin neden yanlış olduğunu tam cümleyle açıklıyoruz; kalıcı öğrenme için 'doğrusu neydi' değil 'neden böyle' sorusunun cevabı önemlidir.
The mistakes below appear almost without exception in Turkish learners. For each one we explain in a full sentence what is wrong and why; for lasting learning, the answer to 'why is it so' matters more than 'what was the correct form'.
Genel kural 'yardımcı fiili öne al' olsa da, birkaç önemli özel durum vardır. Bunları bilmek, doğal ve doğru İngilizce arasındaki farkı yaratır.
Soru kelimesi cümlenin öznesi olduğunda do/does/did KULLANILMAZ ve devriklik olmaz: Who came? deriz, Who did come? değil. Türk öğrencinin en sık düştüğü tuzak tam da budur.
1. Özne sorusu: en kritik istisna
Soru kelimesi (Who, What, Which) cümlenin öznesi olduğunda, do/does/did KULLANILMAZ ve devriklik olmaz. Cümle düz sırada kalır, sadece özne yerine soru kelimesi gelir. Bu, İngilizcedeki en önemli soru istisnasıdır ve Türk öğrenci için tamamen sezgi dışıdır.
| Tür | Örnek | Yapı | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|---|
| Özne sorusu | Who called you? | do YOK, fiil çekimli | Seni kim aradı? |
| Nesne sorusu | Who did you call? | did VAR, fiil yalın | Sen kimi aradın? |
| Özne sorusu | What happened? | do YOK | Ne oldu? |
| Nesne sorusu | What did you do? | did VAR | Ne yaptın? |
2. 'be' fiili: kendi yardımcısıdır
Ana fiil 'be' (am/is/are/was/were) olduğunda, soru için ekstra bir yardımcıya gerek yoktur. 'be' hem ana fiil hem de kendi yardımcısı gibi davranır ve doğrudan öne gelir.
3. Edat konumu: sona kayan edat
Bir soruda edat (at, to, with, about, for) varsa, günlük İngilizcede genellikle cümlenin sonuna gider. Türkçede edat/ek soru kelimesine yapışır (kiminle, neye), bu yüzden bu yapı yabancı gelir.
Although the general rule is 'bring the auxiliary to the front', there are a few important special cases. Knowing them makes the difference between natural and merely correct English.
When the question word is the subject of the sentence, do/does/did are NOT used and there is no inversion: Who came? we say, Who did come? not. This is exactly the trap Turkish learners most often fall into.
1. The subject question: the most critical exception
When the question word (Who, What, Which) is the subject of the sentence, do/does/did are NOT used and there is no inversion. The sentence stays in plain order; only the subject is replaced by the question word. This is the most important question exception in English and is completely counterintuitive for the Turkish learner.
| Type | Example | Structure | Turkish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Subject question | Who called you? | no do, verb conjugated | Seni kim aradı? |
| Object question | Who did you call? | did present, verb base | Sen kimi aradın? |
| Subject question | What happened? | no do | Ne oldu? |
| Object question | What did you do? | did present | Ne yaptın? |
2. The verb 'be': it is its own auxiliary
When the main verb is 'be' (am/is/are/was/were), no extra auxiliary is needed for the question. 'be' acts as both the main verb and its own auxiliary, and comes to the front directly.
3. Preposition placement: the preposition that shifts to the end
If a question has a preposition (at, to, with, about, for), in everyday English it usually goes to the end of the sentence. In Turkish the preposition/suffix sticks to the question word (kiminle, neye), so this structure feels foreign.
Gerçek konuşmada sorular kitaptaki gibi tam ve düzgün olmayabilir; İngilizce konuşurlar günlük dilde soruları kısaltır. Aşağıdaki diyalog, doğal soru kullanımını gösteriyor.
Çok gündelik İngilizcede, özellikle Amerikan konuşma dilinde, Evet/Hayır sorularında yardımcı fiil bazen tamamen düşürülür: You coming? (= Are you coming?), Got a minute? (= Have you got a minute?). Bu 'kısaltma' sadece samimi, sözlü ortamda kabul edilir; yazıda ve sınavda tam yapı kullanılmalıdır.
In real conversation questions may not be as full and neat as in a book; English speakers shorten questions in everyday speech. The dialogue below shows natural question use.
In very casual English, especially in American speech, the auxiliary is sometimes dropped entirely in Yes/No questions: You coming? (= Are you coming?), Got a minute? (= Have you got a minute?). This 'shortcut' is accepted only in informal, spoken settings; in writing and exams the full structure must be used.
Akademik ve resmi yazıda sorular daha az kullanılır çünkü akademik metin bilgi 'sunar', bilgi 'istemez'. Ancak sorular akademik yazıda özel işlevlerle karşımıza çıkar: araştırma sorusu belirtmek, retorik soru sormak ve dolaylı soru yapısıyla kibar/nesnel bir ton kurmak.
1. Araştırma sorusu (research question)
2. Retorik soru (dikkatli kullan)
Retorik soru, cevabı beklenmeyen, okuru düşündürmek için sorulan sorudur. Akademik yazıda az ve yerinde kullanılmalıdır; aşırısı gayri resmi durur.
- 'How do people decide...' doğrudan bir soru olarak açılışta güçlü, dikkat çeken bir retorik araç.
- 'how can they tell...' — modal 'can' ile devriklik; doğrudan gömülü soru.
- 'whether media literacy education can help' — dolaylı soru, whether + düz sıra, devriklik yok.
- 'how students evaluate', 'what factors influence' — dolaylı sorular; 'how do students', 'what do factors' DEĞİL.
- 'ask who wrote a text, why it was written, what evidence supports' — üç dolaylı soru; hepsinde düz sıra korunmuş.
- Akademik metin, doğrudan soruyu ölçülü kullanır ama dolaylı soruları bolca içerir; bu, nesnel ve kibar bir ton yaratır.
In academic and formal writing questions are used less, because academic text 'presents' information, it doesn't 'ask for' it. However, questions appear in academic writing with special functions: stating a research question, asking a rhetorical question, and setting a polite/objective tone with the indirect-question structure.
1. Research question
2. Rhetorical question (use carefully)
A rhetorical question is one asked to make the reader think, with no answer expected. In academic writing it should be used sparingly and appropriately; too much sounds informal.
- 'How do people decide...' — a direct question at the opening is a strong, attention-grabbing rhetorical device.
- 'how can they tell...' — inversion with the modal 'can'; a direct embedded question.
- 'whether media literacy education can help' — indirect question, whether + plain order, no inversion.
- 'how students evaluate', 'what factors influence' — indirect questions; NOT 'how do students', 'what do factors'.
- 'ask who wrote a text, why it was written, what evidence supports' — three indirect questions; plain order preserved in all.
- Academic text uses direct questions in moderation but contains plenty of indirect questions; this creates an objective, polite tone.
- "Where do I sit? Who is my manager? What time is lunch?" — üç farklı Wh- sorusu: do ile, be ile ve 'What time' kalıbıyla.
- "Are you the new designer?" — be ile Evet/Hayır sorusu; kısa cevabı 'Yes, I am.'
- "Have you met the team yet?" — Present Perfect sorusu; 'have' öne gelir, 'No, I haven't' kısa cevabı.
- "When does the morning meeting start?" — does + start yalın; -s yok.
- "Would you like a coffee?" — kibar teklif kalıbı (would like).
- "Can you see the blue door?" — modal 'can' öne gelir; ana fiil yalın.
- "why did you choose this company?" — did + choose yalın (chose değil); nesne/eylem sorusu, devriklik var.
- "What made you join?" — özne sorusu istisnası: 'What' özne, do KULLANILMAZ, fiil 'made' doğrudan çekimli.
- "Where do I sit? Who is my manager? What time is lunch?" — three different Wh- questions: with do, with be, and with the 'What time' pattern.
- "Are you the new designer?" — a Yes/No question with be; its short answer is 'Yes, I am.'
- "Have you met the team yet?" — a Present Perfect question; 'have' comes to the front, short answer 'No, I haven't'.
- "When does the morning meeting start?" — does + start base; no -s.
- "Would you like a coffee?" — a polite offer pattern (would like).
- "Can you see the blue door?" — the modal 'can' comes to the front; the main verb is base.
- "why did you choose this company?" — did + choose base (not chose); an object/action question, with inversion.
- "What made you join?" — the subject-question exception: 'What' is the subject, do is NOT used, the verb 'made' is directly conjugated.

Aşağıdaki sorular kural ezberini değil, anlamı ve yapının mantığını kontrol eder. Her birini önce kendin düşün, sonra cevabı aç.
- 'Who called you?' ve 'Who did you call?' arasındaki anlam farkı nedir?İlkinde 'Who' özne: seni ARAYAN kişiyi sorar (o kişi failsin değil, fail o). İkincisinde 'Who' nesne: senin ARADIĞIN kişiyi sorar (fail sensin). Bu yüzden ilkinde 'did' yok, ikincisinde var.
- Neden 'Does she likes it?' yanlıştır?'does' zaten 3. tekil şahıs -s bilgisini taşır. -s'i iki kez işaretlemek (hem does hem likes) yanlıştır; ana fiil yalın kalmalı: 'Does she like it?'
- 'Do you can help?' neden yanlış? Modal fiillerin özelliği ne?'can' zaten bir yardımcı fiildir (modal). Kendisi öne gelir; önüne ikinci bir yardımcı (do) gelmez. Doğrusu: 'Can you help?'
- Neden 'Could you tell me where is the station?' yanlıştır?Dolaylı/kibar soruda devriklik kaybolur; gömülü kısım düz cümle sırasında kalır: 'where the station is.' Devrik 'where is' burada yanlıştır.
- 'Why don't we go out tonight?' gerçekten sebep mi soruyor?Hayır. Bu bir öneri kalıbıdır: 'Hadi bu akşam dışarı çıkalım' anlamındadır. Bağlam, bunun sebep sorusu değil öneri olduğunu belli eder.
The questions below check not rote rules but the meaning and the logic of the structure. Think about each yourself first, then reveal the answer.
- What is the difference in meaning between 'Who called you?' and 'Who did you call?'In the first, 'Who' is the subject: it asks about the person who CALLED you (that person is the doer, not you). In the second, 'Who' is the object: it asks about the person you CALLED (you are the doer). That's why the first has no 'did' and the second does.
- Why is 'Does she likes it?' wrong?'does' already carries the 3rd person singular -s information. Marking the -s twice (both does and likes) is wrong; the main verb must stay base: 'Does she like it?'
- Why is 'Do you can help?' wrong? What is special about modal verbs?'can' is already an auxiliary verb (a modal). It comes to the front itself; a second auxiliary (do) does not come before it. The correct form is: 'Can you help?'
- Why is 'Could you tell me where is the station?' wrong? In a polite/indirect question inversion disappears; the embedded part stays in plain-sentence order: 'where the station is.' The inverted 'where is' is wrong here.
- Does 'Why don't we go out tonight?' really ask for a reason? No. It is a suggestion pattern: it means 'Let's go out tonight'. Context makes it clear that this is a suggestion, not a reason question.

Görev: Yeni tanıştığın bir kişiyle (dil değişim partneri, yeni iş arkadaşı ya da mülakat yapan biri) kısa bir tanışma diyaloğu yaz. En az 8 soru kullan ve şunları içermeli: en az 2 Evet/Hayır sorusu, en az 4 Wh- sorusu, 1 kibar rica/teklif sorusu (Could/Would), ve 1 özne sorusu (Who/What özne).
Rehber sorular (kendine sor)
- Her soruda yardımcı fiili doğru seçtim mi (do/does/did/be/modal)?
- does/did kullandığım yerlerde ana fiili yalın bıraktım mı?
- Wh- sorularında devrikliği uyguladım mı?
- Özne sorumda (Who/What özne) yanlışlıkla 'did' eklemedim, değil mi?
- Kibar rica için can yerine could/would kullandım mı?
Örnek cevap
Task: Write a short getting-to-know-you dialogue with someone you have just met (a language-exchange partner, a new colleague, or an interviewer). Use at least 8 questions and it must include: at least 2 Yes/No questions, at least 4 Wh- questions, 1 polite request/offer question (Could/Would), and 1 subject question (Who/What as subject).
Guiding questions (ask yourself)
- Did I choose the right auxiliary in each question (do/does/did/be/modal)?
- Where I used does/did, did I leave the main verb in the base form?
- Did I apply inversion in the Wh- questions?
- In my subject question (Who/What as subject), I didn't accidentally add 'did', right?
- Did I use could/would instead of can for a polite request?

En büyük direnç noktası, Türkçedeki 'soru = küçük ek' refleksinin İngilizcedeki 'soru = yapısal devriklik' gerçeğiyle çatışmasıdır. Öğrenciler sürekli düz cümleyi soru tonuyla söylemeye kayar (You like it?). Bunu düzeltmenin en etkili yolu, hataya işaret etmeden 'Yardımcı fiilin nerede?' diye sormaktır; öğrenci çoğu zaman kendi kendini düzeltir.
The biggest point of resistance is the clash between the Turkish 'question = a small particle' reflex and the English reality of 'question = structural inversion'. Students constantly slip into saying the plain sentence with question intonation (You like it?). The most effective way to fix this is to ask, without pointing out the error, 'Where is your auxiliary?'; the student usually self-corrects.
- İngilizcede soru = yardımcı fiili öznenin önüne almak (devriklik). Türkçedeki '-mi' ekinin karşılığı yoktur.
- Cümlede zaten yardımcı varsa (be, modal, have) onu öne al: Is she..? Can you..? Have you..?
- Görünür yardımcı yoksa (Present/Past Simple) do/does/did getir: Do you..? Does she..? Did they..?
- does/did kullanınca ana fiil yalın kalır: Does she like (likes değil), Did you go (went değil).
- İki büyük aile: Evet/Hayır soruları (yardımcıyla başlar) ve Wh- soruları (soru kelimesiyle başlar, bilgi ister).
- Wh- kalıbı: Wh- + yardımcı + özne + ana fiil (ASI formülü). Soru kelimesi neredeyse hep en başta.
- Özne sorusu istisnası: Soru kelimesi öznenin kendisiyse (Who? What?) do/does/did KULLANILMAZ: Who broke it?
- Kibar rica için could/would; günlük konuşmada edat çoğu zaman sona kayar: What are you looking at?
- Dolaylı/kibar sorularda (Do you know where..?) devriklik kaybolur, cümle düz sıraya döner.
- Kısa cevaplar sorudaki yardımcı fiili tekrar eder: Yes, I do. / No, she isn't.
- Sıradaki konu: Soru Ekleri — 'değil mi?' anlamındaki soru ekleri; aynı yardımcı fiil mantığını kullanır.
- In English, question = moving the auxiliary in front of the subject (inversion). There is no equivalent of the Turkish '-mi' particle.
- If the sentence already has an auxiliary (be, modal, have), bring it to the front: Is she..? Can you..? Have you..?
- If there is no visible auxiliary (Present/Past Simple), bring in do/does/did : Do you..? Does she..? Did they..?
- does/did when you use them, the main verb in the base form : Does she like (not likes), Did you go (not went).
- The two big families: Yes/No questions (begins with an auxiliary) and Wh- questions (begins with a question word, asks for information).
- Wh- pattern: Wh- + auxiliary + subject + main verb (the ASI formula). The question word is almost always at the very front.
- Subject-question exception: If the question word is itself the subject (Who? What?), do/does/did are NOT used: Who broke it?
- For a polite request use could/would; in everyday speech the preposition often goes to the end shifts: What are you looking at?
- In polite/indirect questions (Do you know where..?) inversion disappears, the sentence returns to plain order.
- Short answers repeat the auxiliary from the question: Yes, I do. / No, she isn't.
- Next topic: Question Tags — question tags meaning 'isn't it?'; they use the same auxiliary-verb logic.
