Present Perfect, İngilizcenin en 'İngilizce' zamanıdır; çünkü Türkçede birebir karşılığı yoktur. İşlevi tek cümleyle şudur: geçmişte olmuş bir olayı, şimdiki anla bir köprü kurarak anlatmak. Yani olayın kendisi geçmişte kalmıştır ama sonucu, etkisi ya da geçerliliği hâlâ 'şimdi' ile ilgilidir.
Bir örnekle görelim. I have lost my keys. demek 'Anahtarımı kaybettim' demektir ama vurgusu geçmişteki kaybetme anında değil, şu anda anahtarımın yanımda olmayışındadır. Yani hâlâ anahtarsızım, hâlâ içeri giremiyorum. Eğer 'Anahtarımı dün kaybettim ama sonra buldum' demek isteseydiniz, artık şimdiyle bağı kopardığınız için Past Simple kullanırdınız: I lost my keys yesterday.
- '-di'li geçmiş gibi: I have finished. = Bitirdim. (Ama 'şu an bitmiş durumda' vurgusuyla.)
- '-miş'li geçmiş gibi (deneyim/haber): He has been to Japan. = Japonya'ya gitmiş(liği var).
- Geniş zaman gibi (hâlâ süren durum): I have lived here for years. = Yıllardır burada yaşıyorum.
- 'Henüz/daha' + olumsuz: She hasn't called yet. = Daha aramadı.
The Present Perfect is the most 'English' of English tenses, because in Turkish it has no one-to-one equivalent. Its function in a single sentence is this: to describe a past event by building a bridge to the present moment. That is, the event itself is in the past, but its result, effect or validity still concerns 'now'.
Let's look at an example. I have lost my keys. means 'Anahtarımı kaybettim', but its emphasis is not on the past moment of losing, but on the fact that I don't have my keys right now. So I'm still without keys, still can't get inside. If you wanted to say 'I lost my keys yesterday but then found them', since you've now cut the link with the present, you would use Past Simple : I lost my keys yesterday.
Why does it exist? English's need for a 'link with now'
English wants you to tell apart 'whether you care about when an event finished or about its present result' grammatically. In Turkish we usually infer this distinction from context and adverbs; in English the tense itself carries this information. That is why the Present Perfect is not a 'luxury' but a tool that changes the meaning of communication.
The closest Turkish equivalents
- Like the '-di' past: I have finished. = Bitirdim. (But with the emphasis 'now in a finished state'.)
- Like the '-miş' past (experience/news): He has been to Japan. = Japonya'ya gitmiş(liği var).
- Like the simple present (still-ongoing situation): I have lived here for years. = Yıllardır burada yaşıyorum.
- 'Yet/still not' + negative: She hasn't called yet. = Daha aramadı.
- Yapı: have/has + fiilin 3. hâli (past participle / V3). I have worked, She has gone.
- has yalnızca he / she / it iledir; diğer bütün öznelerle have.
- Olumsuz: haven't / hasn't + V3. I haven't finished.
- Soru: Have/Has + özne + V3? Have you seen it?
- Odak 'ne zaman' değil, olayın şimdiki sonucu/geçerliliği.
- Belirli geçmiş zaman ifadesi (yesterday, last year, in 2019) varsa KULLANILMAZ — orada Past Simple gerekir.
- Sık zarflar: ever, never, already, yet, just, so far, recently, since, for.
- for + süre (for two years), since + başlangıç noktası (since 2020).
- been = gidip döndü; gone = gitti, hâlâ orada.
- Sürecin kendisini/süresini vurgulamak için Present Perfect Continuous'a geçilir.
- Structure: have/has + the 3rd form of the verb (past participle / V3). I have worked, She has gone.
- has only with he / she / it; with all other subjects, have.
- Negative: haven't / hasn't + V3. I haven't finished.
- Question: Have/Has + subject + V3? Have you seen it?
- The focus is not 'when' but the event's present result/validity.
- If there is a specific past time expression (yesterday, last year, in 2019), it is NOT USED — there, Past Simple is required.
- Common adverbs: ever, never, already, yet, just, so far, recently, since, for.
- for + duration (for two years), since + starting point (since 2020).
- been = went and came back; gone = went, still there.
- To emphasize the process itself/its duration, Present Perfect Continuousis used.
Olumlu cümle
Formül: Özne + have/has + V3 (fiilin 3. hâli). He/She/It ile has, diğerleriyle have. Günlük konuşmada kısalır: I've, you've, he's, she's, we've, they've.
Olumsuz cümle
Formül: Özne + have not / has not + V3. Kısaltma: haven't / hasn't. Olumsuzda çoğu zaman yet (henüz) eşlik eder.
Soru cümlesi ve kısa cevap
Formül: Have/Has + özne + V3? Deneyim sorularında ever özneden hemen sonra gelir. Kısa cevaplarda asıl fiil tekrarlanmaz, yardımcı fiil kullanılır.
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Have you finished? | Yes, I have. | No, I haven't. |
| Has he left? | Yes, he has. | No, he hasn't. |
| Have they paid? | Yes, they have. | No, they haven't. |
Affirmative sentence
Formula: Subject + have/has + V3 (the 3rd form of the verb). With He/She/It, has, with the others, have. In everyday speech it contracts: I've, you've, he's, she's, we've, they've.
Negative sentence
Formula: Subject + have not / has not + V3. Contraction: haven't / hasn't. In the negative, it is often accompanied by yet (henüz).
Question sentence and short answer
Formula: Have/Has + subject + V3? In experience questions, ever comes right after the subject. In short answers the main verb is not repeated; the auxiliary verb is used.
| Question | Affirmative short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Have you finished? | Yes, I have. | No, I haven't. |
| Has he left? | Yes, he has. | No, he hasn't. |
| Have they paid? | Yes, they have. | No, they haven't. |
Present Perfect'te tek değişen yardımcı fiildir: have ya da has. Asıl fiil (V3) hiç değişmez. Aşağıda finish fiili örneklenmiştir.
| Özne | Biçim | Örnek | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | have finished | I have finished. | Bitirdim. |
| You | have finished | You have finished. | Bitirdin. |
| He | has finished | He has finished. | O bitirdi (erkek). |
| She | has finished | She has finished. | O bitirdi (kadın). |
| It | has finished | It has finished. | O bitti (nesne). |
| We | have finished | We have finished. | Bitirdik. |
| They | have finished | They have finished. | Bitirdiler. |
In the Present Perfect the only thing that changes is the auxiliary verb: have or has. The main verb (V3) never changes. Below, the verb finish is used as an example.
| Subject | Form | Example | Turkish |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | have finished | I have finished. | Bitirdim. |
| You | have finished | You have finished. | Bitirdin. |
| He | has finished | He has finished. | O bitirdi (erkek). |
| She | has finished | She has finished. | O bitirdi (kadın). |
| It | has finished | It has finished. | O bitti (nesne). |
| We | have finished | We have finished. | Bitirdik. |
| They | have finished | They have finished. | Bitirdiler. |
Present Perfect'in tek bir 'anlamı' yoktur; birbirine akraba birkaç kullanımı vardır. Hepsinin ortak paydası aynıdır: geçmişteki olayın şimdiyle bir bağı vardır. En yaygından daha özele doğru sıralayalım.
1) Hayat boyu deneyim (ne zaman olduğu önemsiz)
Bir şeyi hayatınızın herhangi bir noktasında yapıp yapmadığınızı anlatır. Sık zarflar: ever, never, before.
2) Yeni biten olay, sonucu şimdi görülüyor
Az önce olmuş, sonucu hâlâ ortada olan olaylar. Sık zarflar: just, already, recently, lately.
3) Geçmişte başlayıp hâlâ süren durum (for / since)
Bir durum geçmişte başladı ve şu an da devam ediyor. Bu, Türkçe zihni en çok şaşırtan kullanımdır; çünkü Türkçe burada geniş zaman kullanır ('yaşıyorum'), İngilizce ise Present Perfect ister.
4) Bitmemiş zaman dilimi içinde olanlar (today, this week...)
İçinde bulunduğunuz ve henüz sona ermemiş bir zaman diliminde gerçekleşen olaylar: today, this morning (sabahsa), this week, this year, so far.
5) Haber ve duyurularda (yeni gelişme)
Bir haberi ilk kez, sonucuyla birlikte duyururken Present Perfect kullanılır; ayrıntılar (ne zaman, nerede) verilmeye başlanınca genellikle Past Simple'a geçilir.
The Present Perfect doesn't have a single 'meaning'; it has several related uses. They all share the same common ground: the past event has a link with the present. Let's list them from the most common to the more specific.
1) Lifetime experience (when it happened doesn't matter)
It expresses whether you have done something at any point in your life. Common adverbs: ever, never, before.
2) A just-finished event, its result seen now
Events that happened a moment ago, whose result is still visible. Common adverbs: just, already, recently, lately.
3) A situation that started in the past and still continues (for / since)
A situation started in the past and still continues now. This is the use that most surprises the Turkish mind, because Turkish uses the simple present here ('yaşıyorum'), while English wants the Present Perfect.
4) Things within an unfinished time frame (today, this week...)
Events that occur within a time frame you are in and that has not yet ended : today, this morning (if it's morning), this week, this year, so far.
5) In news and announcements (new development)
The Present Perfect is used when announcing a piece of news for the first time, with its result; when the details (when, where) start to be given, one usually switches to the Past Simple.
Bazı zarflar Present Perfect'le çok sık birlikte kullanılır ve konumları önemlidir. Ama dikkat: bunlar 'garanti' değildir; asıl belirleyici cümlenin anlamıdır (şimdiyle bağ var mı?).
| Kelime | Anlam | Konum | Örnek |
|---|---|---|---|
| ever | hayat boyu hiç (soru) | özneden sonra | Have you ever been to Rome? |
| never | hiçbir zaman | have/has'ten sonra | I have never seen snow. |
| already | zaten, beklenenden önce | have/has'ten sonra veya sonda | I've already eaten. |
| yet | henüz (olumsuz/soru) | cümle sonunda | She hasn't replied yet. |
| just | az önce | have/has'ten sonra | He's just arrived. |
| for | ...dır (süre) | süreden önce | for two weeks |
| since | ...-den beri | başlangıçtan önce | since 2018 |
| so far / up to now | şimdiye kadar | genelde sonda | We've sold ten so far. |
| recently / lately | son zamanlarda | sonda veya başta | I've felt tired lately. |
Some adverbs are used very often with the Present Perfect and their positions matter. But note: they are not a 'guarantee'; the real decider is the meaning of the sentence (is there a link with now?).
| Word | Meaning | Position | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| ever | ever in your life (question) | after the subject | Have you ever been to Rome? |
| never | never | after have/has | I have never seen snow. |
| already | already, earlier than expected | after have/has or at the end | I've already eaten. |
| yet | yet (negative/question) | at the end of the sentence | She hasn't replied yet. |
| just | a moment ago | after have/has | He's just arrived. |
| for | for (duration) | before the duration | for two weeks |
| since | since | before the starting point | since 2018 |
| so far / up to now | so far / up to now | usually at the end | We've sold ten so far. |
| recently / lately | recently | at the end or beginning | I've felt tired lately. |

Türkçede Present Perfect'in tek bir karşılığı olmadığı için, Türkçeden İngilizceye 'birebir' çeviri yapmak en büyük tuzaktır. Aynı Türkçe cümle, bağlama göre farklı İngilizce zamanlar gerektirebilir.
- Türkçe '-di'li geçmiş bazen Present Perfect'e (Bitirdim = I have finished), bazen Past Simple'a (Dün bitirdim = I finished yesterday) karşılık gelir. Belirleyici: belirli zaman var mı, şimdiyle bağ var mı?
- Türkçe geniş zaman ('yaşıyorum, tanıyorum') süregelen bir durumu anlatıyorsa ve for/since ile birlikteyse, İngilizcede Present Perfect olur: Yıllardır tanıyorum = I have known...
- Türkçe 'henüz/daha ...-medi' kalıbı doğrudan Present Perfect olumsuz + yet'e karşılık gelir.
Since the Present Perfect has no single equivalent in Turkish, doing a 'one-to-one' translation from Turkish to English is the biggest trap. The same Turkish sentence may require different English tenses depending on context.
- The Turkish '-di' past sometimes corresponds to the Present Perfect (Bitirdim = I have finished), sometimes to the Past Simple (Dün bitirdim = I finished yesterday) depending. The decider: is there a specific time, is there a link with now?
- If the Turkish simple present ('yaşıyorum, tanıyorum') describes an ongoing situation and comes with for/since, it becomes the Present Perfect in English: Yıllardır tanıyorum = I have known...
- The Turkish 'henüz/daha ...-medi' pattern directly corresponds to the Present Perfect negative + yet.
|---|---|---|
| Zaman bilgisi | belirsiz / şimdiye bağlı | belirli, bitmiş geçmiş |
| Zaman zarfı | ever, just, yet, since, for | yesterday, ago, in 2010, last week |
| Odak | şimdiki sonuç | geçmişteki olayın kendisi |
| Örnek | I have lost my phone. | I lost my phone last night. |
| Ölçüt | Present Perfect | Present Perfect Continuous |
|---|---|---|
| Vurgu | sonuç / tamamlanma | süreç / süre / eylemin kendisi |
| Tipik soru | How many/much? (kaç tane) | How long? (ne kadar süredir) |
| Örnek | I've written three pages. | I've been writing for two hours. |
| Nüans | sonuç sayılabilir/bitmiş | eylem hâlâ sürüyor ya da yeni bitti, izi var |
The Present Perfect is most often confused with Past Simple and Present Perfect Continuous ; sometimes it is even mistakenly conjugated in the Continuous with stative verbs . Three key questions decide the difference between them: is there a specific past time expression in the sentence, is the emphasis on the result or the process, and is the event linked with now or closed? The tables below place these criteria side by side; let's compare first with the Past Simple, then with the Continuous form.
| Criterion | Present Perfect | Past Simple |
|---|---|---|
| Time information | indefinite / linked to now | specific, finished past |
| Time adverb | ever, just, yet, since, for | yesterday, ago, in 2010, last week |
| Focus | present result | the past event itself |
| Example | I have lost my phone. | I lost my phone last night. |
| Criterion | Present Perfect | Present Perfect Continuous |
|---|---|---|
| Emphasis | result / completion | process / duration / the action itself |
| Typical question | How many/much? (how many) | How long? (for how long) |
| Example | I've written three pages. | I've been writing for two hours. |
| Nuance | the result is countable/finished | the action is still ongoing or just finished, leaving a trace |
been vs gone
Durum fiilleri (state verbs) ile
know, believe, have (sahip olmak), like gibi durum fiilleri süregelen durumlarda genelde Present Perfect Simple alır, Continuous almaz: I have known her for years. (I have been knowing... yanlıştır.)
Amerikan ve İngiliz İngilizcesi farkı
Aynı zaman dilimi bitti mi, sürüyor mu? (today, this morning)
Bazı zaman dilimleri, konuşma anına göre hem bitmiş hem sürüyor olabilir. Sabah saat 10'daysanız this morning hâlâ sürüyordur ve I have drunk two coffees this morning doğrudur. Ama öğleden sonraysanız sabah kapanmıştır; artık belirli geçmiş sayıldığı için I drank two coffees this morning (Past Simple) demeniz gerekir. Yani aynı ifade, günün saatine göre iki farklı zaman ister.
been vs gone
With stative verbs (state verbs),
such as know, believe, have (to possess), like, stative verbs in ongoing situations they generally take the Present Perfect Simple, not the Continuous: I have known her for years. (I have been knowing... is wrong.)
American and British English difference
Has the same time frame ended, or is it ongoing? (today, this morning)
Some time frames can be both finished and ongoing depending on the moment of speaking. If it's 10 in the morning, this morning is still going, and I have drunk two coffees this morning is correct. But if it's afternoon, the morning is closed; since it now counts as specific past, I drank two coffees this morning (Past Simple) is what you must say. So the same expression requires two different tenses depending on the time of day.
Present Perfect gündelik konuşmada çok yaygındır, özellikle haber verirken, deneyim sorarken ve kısaltmalı biçimlerle (I've, he's, we've).
The Present Perfect is very common in everyday conversation, especially when giving news, asking about experience, and with contracted forms (I've, he's, we've).
Akademik yazıda Present Perfect, güncel araştırma durumunu ve şimdiye kadarki bulguları özetlemek için vazgeçilmezdir. 'Recent studies have shown...' gibi kalıplar, geçmişteki çalışmayı bugünkü tartışmaya bağlar.
- 'has attracted', 'have demonstrated' — geçmiş çalışmaları bugünkü tartışmaya bağlar.
- 'have not yet reached' — süregelen boşluk; yet akademik dilde de kullanılır.
- 'This review has synthesized' — makalenin kendi katkısını özetleyen tipik kalıp.
In academic writing, the Present Perfect is indispensable for summarizing the current state of research and findings to date — it is essential. Patterns like 'Recent studies have shown...' link past work to today's discussion.
- 'has attracted', 'have demonstrated' — links past work to today's discussion.
- 'have not yet reached' — an ongoing gap; yet is used in academic language too.
- 'This review has synthesized' — a typical pattern summarizing the paper's own contribution.
- 'has always dreamed', 'has wanted ... since she was a child' — hayat boyu süregelen istek (deneyim + süreklilik).
- 'had never left' — bu yıldan önceki daha eski geçmiş; Past Perfect ile şimdiden bir adım geriye gider.
- 'has saved', 'has visited', 'has made', 'has started' — son altı ayda (bitmemiş dilim) olan, sonucu güncel olaylar.
- 'hasn't looked back since', 'has supported her throughout' — geçmişte başlayıp bugüne uzanan süreklilik.
- 'has just booked', 'hasn't finished ... yet', 'has already attracted' — just/yet/already ile şimdiye net bağ.
- 'she didn't speak the language' — hikâyenin içinde bitmiş bir an anlatılırken Past Simple'a geçilir.
- 'has never expected', 'has never regretted' — hayat boyu olumsuz deneyim; 'never' tek başına olumsuzluğu taşır.
- 'This year has been the best year ... it hasn't even ended yet' — hâlâ süren zaman dilimi (this year) + şimdiki sonuç.
- 'has always dreamed', 'has wanted ... since she was a child' — a lifelong ongoing desire (experience + continuity).
- 'had never left' — an older past before this year; Past Perfect steps one back from the present.
- 'has saved', 'has visited', 'has made', 'has started' — events in the last six months (an unfinished frame) whose results are current.
- 'hasn't looked back since', 'has supported her throughout' — continuity that started in the past and reaches today.
- 'has just booked', 'hasn't finished ... yet', 'has already attracted' — a clear link to now with just/yet/already.
- 'she didn't speak the language' — when telling a finished moment within the story, one switches to Past Simple.
- 'has never expected', 'has never regretted' — lifetime negative experience; 'never' alone carries the negation.
- 'This year has been the best year ... it hasn't even ended yet' — a still-ongoing time frame (this year) + present result.

Görev: Kendinizi kısaca tanıtan, Present Perfect ağırlıklı 6-8 cümlelik bir paragraf yazın. Aşağıdaki rehber soruları kullanın.
- Ne kadar süredir bulunduğunuz şehirde/işte/okuldasınız? (for/since)
- Şimdiye kadar hangi ilginç şeyleri yaptınız/gördünüz? (deneyim: have been/seen/done)
- Hayatınızda hiç yapmadığınız ama yapmak istediğiniz bir şey var mı? (never)
- Yakın zamanda başınıza gelen yeni bir gelişme? (just/recently/already)
Task: Write a 6-8 sentence paragraph briefly introducing yourself, mainly in the Present Perfect. Use the guiding questions below.
- How long have you been in your city/job/school? (for/since)
- What interesting things have you done/seen so far? (experience: have been/seen/done)
- Is there something you have never done in your life but want to do? (never)
- A new development that has happened to you recently? (just/recently/already)
Kavram kontrolü için 'Is it finished or continuing?', 'Do we know exactly when?', 'Is the result important now?' gibi CCQ'lar (Concept Checking Questions) kullanın. Özellikle for/since ayrımında bir zaman çizgisi çizmek çok etkilidir: since bir noktayı (•), for bir aralığı (↔) gösterir.
Sık düzeltme: Türk öğrencilerde iki hata baskındır — (a) belirli zaman ifadesiyle Present Perfect (I have seen him yesterday), (b) süregelen durumda geniş/şimdiki zaman (I am living here for years). Bu ikisini erken ve sık hedefleyin; Past Simple ile karşılaştırmalı çalıştırın.
For concept checking, use CCQs (Concept Checking Questions) like 'Is it finished or continuing?', 'Do we know exactly when?', 'Is the result important now?'. Drawing a timeline is especially effective for the for/since distinction: since shows a point (•), for shows an interval (↔).
Frequent correction: Two mistakes dominate among Turkish students — (a) Present Perfect with a specific time expression (I have seen him yesterday), (b) simple/present tense in an ongoing situation (I am living here for years). Target these two early and often; Past Simple practice them comparatively with the Past Simple.
- Present Perfect = have/has + V3; geçmişteki olayı şimdiyle bağlar.
- Odak 'ne zaman' değil, şimdiki sonuç / süregelen geçerlilik / deneyim.
- He/She/It → has; diğerleri → have. Asıl fiil daima 3. hâlde.
- Belirli geçmiş zaman ifadesi (yesterday, ago, in 2010, last week, When...?) varsa → Past Simple, Present Perfect değil.
- for + süre, since + başlangıç noktası. Süregelen durumları anlatır.
- been = gidip döndü / deneyim; gone = gitti, hâlâ orada.
- ever/never = deneyim; just = az önce; already = zaten (olumlu); yet = henüz (olumsuz/soru).
- Sürecin süresini/kendisini vurgulamak için Present Perfect Continuous'a geçilir.
- En büyük iki tuzak: belirli zaman + PP, ve süregelen durumda geniş/şimdiki zaman. Bunlardan kaçının.
- Present Perfect = have/has + V3; links a past event with the present .
- The focus is not 'when', but the present result / ongoing validity / experience.
- He/She/It → has; the others → have. The main verb is always in the 3rd form.
- If there is a specific past time expression (yesterday, ago, in 2010, last week, When...?) → Past Simple, not the Present Perfect.
- for + duration, since + starting point. Expresses ongoing situations.
- been = went and came back / experience; gone = went, still there.
- ever/never = experience; just = a moment ago; already = already (affirmative); yet = yet (negative/question).
- To emphasize the duration/process itself, Present Perfect Continuousis used.
- The two biggest traps: specific time + PP, and simple/present tense in an ongoing situation. Avoid these.
