Türkçede bu farkı -iyor eki taşır: "yaparım" (alışkanlık) ≠ "yapıyorum" (şu an). İngilizce de aynı ihtiyacı am/is/are + -ing yapısıyla karşılar.
Aynı yapı geçici durumları (I'm living in Ankara for now), planlanmış geleceği (I'm flying to London on Friday) ve durum fiillerinin dışlanmasını da içerir.
Present Continuous, is the tense that shows an action as happening right now, before our eyes . When you ask someone on the phone "What are you doing?", the answer "I'm cooking" that you get is expressed in English with exactly this tense: I'm cooking. So at the heart of this tense lies a "started but not yet finished" action.
Why does this tense exist? Because languages want to mark the difference between "I do it every day" and "I'm doing it right now". In Turkish this difference is carried by the -iyor suffix: "yaparım" (habit) ≠ "yapıyorum" (now). English meets the same need with the am/is/are + -ing structure. So Present Continuous is roughly the English equivalent of the Turkish -iyor. In English this distinction is, compared with Turkish, even more clear-cut: habit and momentary action are expressed with two completely separate tenses and cannot be confused.
For a Turkish learner the first stage is easy, because the intuition "-iyor = -ing" often works. The difficulty starts later: in English this tense does not mean just "now" . The same structure also covers temporary situations (I'm living in Ankara for now), the planned future (I'm flying to London on Friday) and the exclusion of stative verbs as well. This very expansion is where the Turkish -iyor does not match one-to-one, and it is what makes the topic interesting. The main aim of this lesson is to introduce you to those "non-one-to-one" areas.
In short, the frame of this tense is this: the speaker shows an action as unfinished, in flow , like a single frame. This "video" logic gathers under one roof the sentences "it's raining now", "I'm studying English these days" and "I'm flying tomorrow" alike.
Present Continuous is roughly the English equivalent of the Turkish -iyor suffix; but beyond "now" it also expresses temporary situation and the planned future as well.
- Yapı: am / is / are + fiil + -ing. Örn: I am eating, She is running, They are talking.
- am → I ile; is → he/she/it ile; are → you/we/they ile kullanılır. Bu üçlüyü ezberlemek zamanın yarısını halleder.
- Olumsuz: yardımcı fiilden sonra not: I'm not eating, She isn't running. "not" asla asıl fiile yapışmaz.
- Soru: yardımcı fiil başa gelir: Are you eating?, Is she running? do/does kullanılmaz.
- En yaygın anlam: konuşma anında süren eylem (Look, it's raining!).
- İkinci yaygın anlam: geçici durum (I'm reading a great book these days) — bir dönem boyunca geçerli.
- Üçüncü önemli anlam: planlanmış gelecek (We're meeting at 8 tomorrow) — ayarlanmış plan.
- Dördüncü anlam: değişen/gelişen durum (Prices are rising) — get, become, grow gibi fiillerle.
- Yazımda değişiklik olur: make → making, run → running, lie → lying.
- Bazı fiiller (know, want, like, believe...) genelde bu zamanda kullanılmaz — bunlar durum fiilleri.
- Alışkanlık ve genel gerçek için bu zaman değil, Geniş Zaman kullanılır: I go to school every day.
- İpucu kelimeleri: now, right now, at the moment, currently, today, this week, these days, look!, listen!
- Structure: am / is / are + verb + -ing. E.g.: I am eating, She is running, They are talking.
- am → with I; is → with he/she/it; are → used with you/we/they. Memorizing these three handles half of the tense.
- Negative: after the auxiliary verb comes not: I'm not eating, She isn't running. "not" never attaches to the main verb.
- Question: the auxiliary verb comes to the front : Are you eating?, Is she running? do/does is not used.
- Most common meaning: ongoing at the moment of speaking action (Look, it's raining!).
- Second common meaning: temporary situation (I'm reading a great book these days) — valid over a period of time.
- Third important meaning: planned future (We're meeting at 8 tomorrow) — an arranged plan.
- Fourth meaning: changing/developing situation (Prices are rising) — with verbs like get, become, grow.
- Spelling changes occur: make → making, run → running, lie → lying.
- Some verbs (know, want, like, believe...) in this tense are generally not used — these are stative verbs.
- For habits and general truths, this tense is not used; instead,, Present Simple is used: I go to school every day.
- Signal words: now, right now, at the moment, currently, today, this week, these days, look!, listen!
Olumlu (Affirmative)
Formül: özne + am/is/are + fiil-ing. Yardımcı fiil özneye göre değişir, asıl fiil -ing alır ve değişmez. Bu zamanda iki parça vardır ve ikisi de zorunludur: kişiyi taşıyan yardımcı fiil (am/is/are) ve süreci taşıyan -ing. Biri eksikse cümle bozulur.
Olumsuz (Negative)
Formül: özne + am/is/are + not + fiil-ing. not her zaman yardımcı fiilin hemen ardına gelir ve asıl fiile dokunulmaz. İki kısaltma yolu vardır: özneyi kısalt (I'm not) ya da yardımcı fiili kısalt (isn't / aren't). Anlam aynıdır.
Soru (Interrogative)
Formül: Am/Is/Are + özne + fiil-ing? Yardımcı fiil özneyle yer değiştirip başa gelir (buna inversion = devrik yapı denir). Soru sözcüğü varsa (what, where, why...) en başa o gelir, hemen ardından yardımcı fiil: What are you doing?
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Are you working? | Yes, I am. | No, I'm not. |
| Is she coming? | Yes, she is. | No, she isn't. |
| Are they eating? | Yes, they are. | No, they aren't. |
| Is it working? | Yes, it is. | No, it isn't. |
Affirmative
Formula: subject + am/is/are + verb-ing. The auxiliary verb changes according to the subject, the main verb takes -ing and does not change. This tense has two parts and both are obligatory: the auxiliary verb that carries the person (am/is/are) and the -ing that carries the process. If one is missing, the sentence breaks.
Negative
Formula: subject + am/is/are + not + verb-ing. not always comes right after the auxiliary verb and the main verb is untouched. There are two ways to contract: contract the subject (I'm not) or contract the auxiliary verb (isn't / aren't). The meaning is the same.
Interrogative
Formula: Am/Is/Are + subject + verb-ing? The auxiliary verb swaps places with the subject and comes to the front (this is called inversion = inversion). If there is a question word (what, where, why...), it comes first, immediately followed by the auxiliary verb: What are you doing?
| Question | Affirmative short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Are you working? | Yes, I am. | No, I'm not. |
| Is she coming? | Yes, she is. | No, she isn't. |
| Are they eating? | Yes, they are. | No, they aren't. |
| Is it working? | Yes, it is. | No, it isn't. |
Present Continuous'ta çekim yalnızca yardımcı fiilde gerçekleşir (am/is/are). Asıl fiil her öznede aynı -ing biçiminde kalır. Yani öznen değişince yalnızca am/is/are değişir; -ing kısmı hiç oynamaz. Aşağıda örnek fiil work:
| Özne | Biçim | Örnek | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | am working | I am working. | Çalışıyorum. |
| You | are working | You are working. | Çalışıyorsun. |
| He | is working | He is working. | (O erkek) çalışıyor. |
| She | is working | She is working. | (O kadın) çalışıyor. |
| It | is working | It is working. | (O) çalışıyor. (örn. makine) |
| We | are working | We are working. | Çalışıyoruz. |
| They | are working | They are working. | Çalışıyorlar. |
In Present Continuous, conjugation only on the auxiliary verb happens (am/is/are). The main verb stays in the same -ing form for every subject. So when your subject changes, only am/is/are changes; the -ing part never moves. The example verb below is work:
| Subject | Form | Example | Turkish |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | am working | I am working. | Çalışıyorum. |
| You | are working | You are working. | Çalışıyorsun. |
| He | is working | He is working. | (O erkek) çalışıyor. |
| She | is working | She is working. | (O kadın) çalışıyor. |
| It | is working | It is working. | (O) çalışıyor. (örn. makine) |
| We | are working | We are working. | Çalışıyoruz. |
| They | are working | They are working. | Çalışıyorlar. |
Fiile -ing eklerken bazen son harf değişir. Bu kurallar telaffuzu ve yazımı düzgün tutmak içindir. Panik yapma: fiillerin çoğu hiçbir değişiklik istemez, doğrudan -ing eklenir. Sadece birkaç küçük istisna grubunu tanıman yeter.
| Kural | Nasıl | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Normal fiil | Doğrudan -ing ekle | play → playing, do → doing, eat → eating |
| Sessiz -e ile biten | -e düşer, -ing gelir | make → making, write → writing, dance → dancing |
| Tek heceli KVK (ünsüz-ünlü-ünsüz) | Son ünsüz iki katına çıkar | sit → sitting, run → running, stop → stopping |
| -ie ile biten | -ie → -y + ing | lie → lying, die → dying, tie → tying |
| Vurgulu son heceli KVK (çok heceli) | Son ünsüz iki katına çıkar | begin → beginning, prefer → preferring |
| Vurgusuz son heceli | İkilenmez | open → opening, listen → listening, visit → visiting |
| -y veya -w ile biten | İkilenmez (y/w ünsüz sayılmaz) | play → playing, enjoy → enjoying, snow → snowing |
When adding -ing to a verb, the last letter sometimes changes. These rules exist to keep pronunciation and spelling correct. Don't panic: most verbs need no change at all — you just add -ing directly. You only need to recognize a few small groups of exceptions.
| Rule | How | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Normal verb | Add -ing directly | play → playing, do → doing, eat → eating |
| Ending in a silent -e | -e drops, -ing is added | make → making, write → writing, dance → dancing |
| One-syllable CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) | The final consonant doubles | sit → sitting, run → running, stop → stopping |
| Ending in -ie | -ie → -y + ing | lie → lying, die → dying, tie → tying |
| Stressed final-syllable CVC (multisyllabic) | The final consonant doubles | begin → beginning, prefer → preferring |
| Unstressed final syllable | No doubling | open → opening, listen → listening, visit → visiting |
| Ending in -y or -w | No doubling (y/w don't count as consonants) | play → playing, enjoy → enjoying, snow → snowing |
1) Şu anda, konuşma anında süren eylem
En temel ve en sık kullanım. Eylem tam şimdi oluyor ve henüz bitmedi. Bu kullanım, olayın "canlı yayında" olduğunu söyler. Çoğu zaman now, right now, at the moment ya da dikkat çeken Look!
Ayrıntı için bkz. will / going to.
Aynı olay Geniş Zaman'la nötr olur: He always loses his keys (bilgi) ≠ He's always losing his keys! (şikâyet).
1) An action happening now, at the moment of speaking
The most basic and most frequent use. The action right now is happening and is not finished yet. This use says the event is "live on air". Often now, right now, at the moment or the attention-grabbing Look! / Listen! come with it, but even without these words the context is enough.
2) An action ongoing over a temporary period (even if not right now)
The action may not be exactly at the moment of speaking, but in this period it is valid. It carries the sense of "these days", "this week", "lately". It is not permanent; a framed period is in question. This way the speaker also sends the message "this isn't my normal, it's a temporary situation".
3) Planned (arranged) future
Used for future plans settled with people or times. Not just "I'm thinking about it"; there is a concrete arrangement with a known place, time and people. Usually a future time expression (tomorrow, tonight, on Friday, next week) accompanies it, because since the verb form can show both present and future, the time adverb removes the ambiguity. For detail, see will / going to.
4) Changing, developing situations
It describes that something is changing over time, increasing or decreasing. It shows not a fixed state but a trend/tendency . Commonly used verbs: get, become, change, grow, rise, fall, improve, increase, decrease. That is why it is very useful in describing graphs and trends.
5) Repeated, often annoying behaviour (always + -ing)
always, constantly, forever, continually , when used together, add a tone of exaggeration/complaint to a very frequently repeated behaviour that usually annoys the speaker. This is not a statement of habit but an emotional comment. The same event becomes neutral in the Present Simple: He always loses his keys (information) ≠ He's always losing his keys! (complaint).
Aşağıdaki kelimeler Present Continuous'la sık görülür. Ama bunlar garanti değildir — cümlenin anlamı asıl belirleyicidir. İpucu kelimeleri bir işaret levhası gibidir: doğru yolu gösterir ama seni oraya götürmez; kararı anlam verir.
| İfade | Anlam | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| now / right now | tam şu an | I'm calling him right now. |
| at the moment | şu anda | She's busy at the moment. |
| currently | şu sıralar (resmi) | We're currently reviewing your file. |
| today / this week / this month | bu dönemde | I'm working late this week. |
| these days / nowadays | bugünlerde | People are spending more online these days. |
| Look! / Listen! / Watch! | dikkat çekme | Listen! Someone is knocking. |
| still | hâlâ (sürüyor) | It's still raining. |
| tonight / tomorrow / on Monday | planlanmış gelecek | We're meeting on Monday. |
The words below often appear with the Present Continuous. But they are not a guarantee — the meaning of the sentence is the real decider. Signal words are like a signpost : they show the right way but don't take you there; meaning makes the decision.
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| now / right now | right now | I'm calling him right now. |
| at the moment | at the moment | She's busy at the moment. |
| currently | currently (formal) | We're currently reviewing your file. |
| today / this week / this month | in this period | I'm working late this week. |
| these days / nowadays | these days | People are spending more online these days. |
| Look! / Listen! / Watch! | drawing attention | Listen! Someone is knocking. |
| still | still (ongoing) | It's still raining. |
| tonight / tomorrow / on Monday | planned future | We're meeting on Monday. |
Geçicilik vurgusu: Present Continuous konuşana "bu kalıcı değil" mesajını verdirir. I live in Ankara (kalıcı, sabit gerçek) ile I'm living in Ankara (şimdilik, geçici) arasındaki fark tamamen bu vurgudan gelir. Yani zaman seçimi sadece "ne zaman"ı değil, konuşanın bakış açısını da anlatır.
Nezaket ve yumuşatma: "I'm hoping...", "I'm wondering..." gibi kalıplar, istekleri daha kibar ve daha az dayatmacı gösterir. Continuous biçim, cümleye "kesin bir talep değil, hafif bir istek" havası katar. I wonder if you could help yerine I'm wondering if you could help daha yumuşaktır; geçmiş Continuous ise (I was wondering...) en kibar seçenektir.
Vurgu ve canlılık: Present Continuous olayı gözümüzün önünde canlandırır. Spor spikerleri, anlatıcılar ve reklamlar bu "an içindelik" hissi için sık kullanır: He's running, he's shooting — and it's a goal! Aynı olay Geniş Zaman'la anlatılsaydı (he runs, he shoots) bu heyecan ve akış kaybolurdu.
Emphasis on temporariness: The Present Continuous lets the speaker convey the message "this is not permanent". I live in Ankara (permanent, fixed fact) and I'm living in Ankara (for now, temporary) — the difference between them comes entirely from this emphasis. So the choice of tense expresses not only "when" but also the speaker's point of view as well.
Politeness and softening: Patterns like "I'm hoping...", "I'm wondering..." make requests more polite and less imposing. The continuous form gives the sentence an air of "not a firm demand, but a mild request". I wonder if you could help versus I'm wondering if you could help , the latter is softer; and the past continuous (I was wondering...) is the most polite option.
Emphasis and vividness: The Present Continuous brings the event to life before our eyes. Sports commentators, narrators and advertisements often use it for this feeling of "being in the moment": He's running, he's shooting — and it's a goal! If the same event were told in the Present Simple (he runs, he shoots), that excitement and flow would be lost.
İngilizcede alışkanlık için Present Continuous kullanılmaz — Geniş Zaman gerekir: I run every morning.
- Türkçede durum fiilleri de -iyor alır: "biliyorum", "istiyorum", "seviyorum". İngilizcede bunlar genelde -ing almaz: I know / I want / I love. Bkz. durum fiilleri.
- Türkçede yardımcı fiil yoktur; çekim fiile yapışır (gel-iyor-um). İngilizcede am/is/are ayrı bir kelimedir ve atlanamaz.
- Türkçe "gidiyorum" hem şu anki eylemi hem de "yarın gidiyorum" planını karşılar; İngilizcede ikisi de Continuous olabilir ama plan anlamında mutlaka gelecek zarfı eklenir.
The Turkish -iyor suffix is a good starting equivalent of the English Present Continuous, but it is one-to-one not exact. The points where the two languages don't overlap are exactly where mistakes arise. Turkish -iyor is a "broader" suffix; the English Continuous is "narrower" and more selective.
TURKISH -İYOR
A "broader" suffix: "now", sometimes habit, stative verbs (biliyorum, istiyorum), and plans are all covered by the same suffix.
ENGLISH CONTINUOUS
"Narrower" and selective: it excludes habit and stative verbs; am/is/are is never dropped.
- Turkish -iyor can carry both "now" (yapıyorum) and sometimes "general/habit" (Her sabah koşuyorum) meanings. In English, for habit, the Present Continuous is not used — Present Simple is required: I run every morning.
- In Turkish, stative verbs also take -iyor: "biliyorum", "istiyorum", "seviyorum". In English these generally do not take -ing: I know / I want / I love. See stative verbs.
- In Turkish there is no auxiliary verb; the conjugation attaches to the verb (gel-iyor-um). In English am/is/are is a separate word and cannot be dropped.
- Turkish "gidiyorum" covers both the current action and the "yarın gidiyorum" plan; in English both can be Continuous, but in the plan sense a future adverb must be added.
| Yapı | Ne anlatır | Örnek | Fark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present Continuous | Şu an süren / geçici / plan | I'm reading now. | An içinde, geçici |
| Present Simple | Alışkanlık / genel gerçek | I read every night. | Rutin, kalıcı |
| Present Continuous (gelecek) | Ayarlanmış plan | I'm seeing the dentist at 4. | Kesinleşmiş plan |
| going to / will | Niyet / karar / tahmin | I'm going to see a dentist. | Niyet, henüz ayarlanmamış olabilir |
| Present Continuous | Şu an devam eden | It's raining. | Şimdiye odak |
| Past Continuous | Geçmişte süren | It was raining. | Geçmiş bir ana odak |
En sık karışan çift, Present Continuous ile Geniş Zaman'dır. Ayrımın özü zaman değil bakıştır: Continuous bir eylemi "şu an akış hâlinde, geçici bir kare" olarak gösterir; Geniş Zaman ise onu "her zaman geçerli, sabit bir gerçek" olarak sunar. Bu yüzden I'm living in Ankara geçiciliği, I live in Ankara kalıcılığı anlatır. İkinci sık karışan çift, gelecek anlatımında Continuous ile will / going to'dur: Continuous ayarlanmış planı, going to niyeti, will ise anlık kararı veya tahmini verir. Geçmişteki süren eylemler için ise yapı Past Continuous'a taşınır (was/were + -ing).
| Structure | What it expresses | Example | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present Continuous | Ongoing now / temporary / plan | I'm reading now. | In the moment, temporary |
| Present Simple | Habit / general truth | I read every night. | Routine, permanent |
| Present Continuous (future) | Arranged plan | I'm seeing the dentist at 4. | Settled plan |
| going to / will | Intention / decision / prediction | I'm going to see a dentist. | Intention, may not be arranged yet |
| Present Continuous | Ongoing now | It's raining. | Focus on now |
| Past Continuous | Ongoing in the past | It was raining. | Focus on a past moment |
The most commonly confused pair is the Present Continuous and the Present Simple. The core of the distinction is not time but perspective: the Continuous shows an action as "in flow right now, a temporary frame"; the Present Simple presents it as "always valid, a fixed fact". That is why I'm living in Ankara expresses temporariness, I live in Ankara expresses permanence. The second commonly confused pair, in talking about the future, is the Continuous and will / going to: the Continuous gives the arranged plan, going to the intention, and will the instant decision or prediction. For actions ongoing in the past, the structure Past Continuousis used (was/were + -ing).
Hataların çoğu dört kökten çıkar: yardımcı fiili (am/is/are) atlamak, durum fiillerine -ing eklemek, alışkanlığı Continuous ile kurmak ve soru sırasını bozmak.
Most mistakes come from four roots: dropping the auxiliary verb (am/is/are), attaching -ing to stative verbs, forming a habit with the Continuous, and breaking the question order.
En önemli "istisna" grubu durum fiilleridir (know, believe, want, like, own, seem, understand...).
The most important "exception" group is the stative verbs (know, believe, want, like, own, seem, understand...). These normally don't take -ing because they express not an action but a permanent state/perception/emotion; states have no "flow", so the continuous form makes no sense. However, some of these verbs, when their meaning shifts from state to action can take the Present Continuous. So what decides is not the verb itself but the meaning it carries at that moment.
The second special case is deliberate stylistic use. Stative verbs are sometimes pushed into the Continuous, breaking the rule, to emphasize the temporariness and vividness of "right in this period, especially". This is not "wrong" grammar but a deliberate bending of meaning: the speaker creates emphasis by turning a permanent state into a temporary experience. Advertising language and everyday speech do this often; but in academic/formal writing it should be avoided.
Akademik ve resmi yazıda Present Continuous en çok güncel eğilimleri, gelişen süreçleri ve geçici durumları anlatmak için kullanılır. Özellikle increasingly, currently, at present, rapidly gibi ifadelerle birlikte, değişen bir tabloyu tarif eder. Ancak akademik metinlerde genel gerçekler, tanımlar ve kalıcı ilişkiler için Geniş Zaman tercih edilir; Continuous "değişen olanı", Simple ise "sabit olanı" üstlenir.
- is changing / are giving way / are adopting: güncel, devam eden büyük eğilimler için Continuous.
- is becoming increasingly blurred: increasingly + Continuous, hızlanan değişimi vurgular.
- are answering / are struggling: şu dönemde süregelen davranışlar.
- is emerging / are reducing: yeni ortaya çıkan karşı eğilim, süreç hâlinde.
- What is clear / What is clear is that...: özet çerçeve cümlesinde durum anlamı, seem/be Geniş Zaman'da.
- are not standing still / are shifting: metnin tezini vurgulayan canlı, süreç odaklı kapanış.
In academic and formal writing, the Present Continuous is used most to describe current trends, developing processes and temporary situations . Especially, together with expressions like increasingly, currently, at present, rapidly , it describes a changing picture. However, in academic texts, for general truths, definitions and permanent relationships, the Present Simple is preferred; the Continuous takes on "what is changing", the Simple "what is fixed".
- is changing / are giving way / are adopting: Continuous for current, ongoing major trends.
- is becoming increasingly blurred: increasingly + Continuous emphasizes accelerating change.
- are answering / are struggling: behaviours ongoing in this period.
- is emerging / are reducing: a newly emerging counter-trend, in progress.
- What is clear / What is clear is that...: a state meaning in a summarizing frame sentence, seem/be in the Present Simple.
- are not standing still / are shifting: a lively, process-focused closing that emphasizes the text's thesis.
- is / is busy: sabit durum için Geniş Zaman (be), etraftaki eylemler için Continuous — ikisinin bir arada nasıl çalıştığına dikkat.
- is making, is sitting, is building, is washing, are riding: şu an gözümüzün önünde süren somut eylemler.
- the smell is filling every room / clouds are gathering: değişen, yayılan süreçler için Continuous.
- I don't think it's working: durum fiili think Geniş Zaman'da kalır; asıl eylem work Continuous olur.
- they're staying at the seaside this week: geçici dönem (this week) için Continuous.
- we're visiting my grandparents this afternoon: planlanmış/ayarlanmış gelecek için Continuous.
- everyone is pretending not to hear her: şu an süren, tekrarlı davranış — nötr betimleme tonu.
- it's going to rain: değişen duruma dayalı tahmin (going to), Continuous ile iç içe kullanılır.
- is / is busy: Present Simple (be) for a fixed state, Continuous for the surrounding actions — note how the two work together.
- is making, is sitting, is building, is washing, are riding: concrete actions ongoing before our eyes right now.
- the smell is filling every room / clouds are gathering: Continuous for changing, spreading processes.
- I don't think it's working: the stative verb think stays in the Present Simple; the main action work becomes Continuous.
- they're staying at the seaside this week: Continuous for a temporary period (this week).
- we're visiting my grandparents this afternoon: Continuous for a planned/arranged future.
- everyone is pretending not to hear her: an ongoing, repeated behaviour — a neutral descriptive tone.
- it's going to rain: a prediction based on a changing situation (going to), used intertwined with the Continuous.

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı değil anlamı ölçer. Cümlenin ne demek istediğine odaklan; biçimi değil, arkasındaki niyeti düşün.
- "I'm living with my parents." — Bu durum kalıcı mı, geçici mi çağrıştırır?Geçici. Continuous, bunun bir süreliğine olduğunu ima eder; "I live with my parents" daha kalıcıdır.
- "We're eating at eight tonight." — Bu şu an mı oluyor, gelecek plan mı?Gelecek plan (bu akşam sekiz için ayarlanmış). "tonight" ile planlanmış gelecek.
- "He's always calling me at midnight." — Bu nötr bir bilgi mi, şikâyet mi?Şikâyet/sitem. always + Continuous, konuşanın rahatsızlığını gösterir.
- "The days are getting longer." — Sabit bir gerçek mi, değişen bir durum mu?Değişen durum. get + Continuous kademeli değişimi anlatır.
- "I'm seeing the manager tomorrow." — see burada "görmek/anlamak" mı, "görüşmek" mi?"Görüşmek/randevu" eylemi. Bu anlamda see -ing alabilir ve ayarlanmış gelecek planı bildirir.
- "She's being really kind today." — Bu onun karakteri mi, bugüne özgü geçici davranış mı?Bugüne özgü geçici davranış. "is being + sıfat" = normalde öyle değil ama şu an öyle davranıyor.
The questions below test not the rule but the meaning . Focus on what the sentence means; think about the intention behind it, not the form.
- "I'm living with my parents." — Does this suggest a permanent or temporary situation?Temporary. The Continuous implies this is for a while; "I live with my parents" is more permanent.
- "We're eating at eight tonight." — Is this happening now, or a future plan?A future plan (arranged for eight tonight). Planned future with "tonight".
- "He's always calling me at midnight." — Is this neutral information, or a complaint?Complaint/reproach. always + Continuous shows the speaker's annoyance.
- "The days are getting longer." — A fixed fact, or a changing situation?A changing situation. get + Continuous expresses gradual change.
- "I'm seeing the manager tomorrow." — Does see here mean "to see/understand", or "to meet"?The action "to meet/appointment". In this sense see can take -ing and signals an arranged future plan.
- "She's being really kind today." — Is this her character, or a temporary behaviour specific to today?A temporary behaviour specific to today. "is being + adjective" = not normally so, but behaving so right now.

Task: Describe the environment you are in right now (room, café, bus, home...) in 6–8 sentences. At least one should be planned future (tomorrow/tonight), at least one temporary situation (this week/these days), and at least one a changing situation (get/become).
- Guiding question 1: Who is doing what around you right now? (is/are + -ing)
- Guiding question 2: What are you doing and not doing right now? (I'm ... / I'm not ...)

Kavram kontrolü (CCQ): "I'm reading a good book these days" için sor: Am I reading right now, at this exact moment? (Cevap: Not necessarily.) Is it a temporary period? (Yes.) Bu, öğrencinin "şu an" ile "bu dönem" farkını görmesini sağlar. Durum fiilleri için: Can I say 'I am wanting'? (No.) Why? (want is a state, not an action.)
Etkinlik önerileri: (1) Mim (mime) oyunu: bir öğrenci sessizce bir eylem canlandırır, diğerleri "You're cooking / dancing!" diye tahmin eder — anlık kullanım için ideal. (2) Resim betimleme: kalabalık bir sahne resmi verip "What is happening?" sordur. (3) Ajanda buluşması: öğrenciler haftalık planlarını paylaşır ("On Friday I'm meeting...") — planlanmış gelecek pratiği. (4) Canlı spor anlatımı: kısa bir video sessiz oynatılır, öğrenciler spiker gibi "He's running, he's passing..." diye anlatır.
Concept check (CCQ): For "I'm reading a good book these days", ask: Am I reading right now, at this exact moment? (Answer: Not necessarily.) Is it a temporary period? (Yes.) This helps the student see the difference between "now" and "this period". For stative verbs: Can I say 'I am wanting'? (No.) Why? (want is a state, not an action.)
Activity suggestions: (1) Mime game: one student silently acts out an action, the others guess "You're cooking / dancing!" — ideal for instant use. (2) Picture description: give a busy scene picture and ask "What is happening?". (3) Diary meeting: students share their weekly plans ("On Friday I'm meeting...") — planned-future practice. (4) Live sports commentary: a short video is played silently, students commentate like a broadcaster "He's running, he's passing...".
- Yapı: am/is/are + fiil-ing; çekim yalnızca yardımcı fiilde, asıl fiil sabit. Akılda tut: "bir am, üç is, üç are."
- Olumsuz: yardımcı fiil + not + -ing; Soru: yardımcı fiil başa gelir. do/does asla kullanılmaz.
- Ana anlamlar: (1) şu an süren, (2) geçici dönem, (3) planlanmış gelecek, (4) değişen durum, (5) always + -ing ile şikâyet.
- Yazım: make→making, sit→sitting, lie→lying; "tek hece + tek ünlü + tek ünsüz ise son harfi ikile"; BrE travelling / AmE traveling.
- Durum fiilleri (know, want, like...) genelde -ing almaz — anlam eyleme kayarsa alabilir; bkz. durum fiilleri.
- Alışkanlık ve genel gerçek Continuous değil Geniş Zaman ister (FOTOĞRAF/VİDEO ayrımı).
- İpucu kelimeleri (now, today...) yardımcıdır ama garanti değildir; NOW ailesi → Continuous, EVERY ailesi → Simple, ama kararı anlam verir.
- Türkçe -iyor iyi bir köprüdür ama alışkanlık ve durum fiillerinde birebir çeviri yanıltır.
- Gelecek için Continuous en "ayarlanmış" olandır; niyet için going to, anlık karar/tahmin için will; bkz. will / going to.
- Structure: am/is/are + verb-ing; conjugation only on the auxiliary verb, the main verb fixed. Remember: "one am, three is, three are."
- Negative: auxiliary verb + not + -ing; Question: the auxiliary verb comes to the front . do/does is never used.
- Main meanings: (1) ongoing now, (2) temporary period, (3) planned future, (4) changing situation, (5) complaint with always + -ing.
- Spelling: make→making, sit→sitting, lie→lying; "if one syllable + one vowel + one consonant, double the last letter"; BrE travelling / AmE traveling.
- Stative verbs (know, want, like...) generally don't take -ing — if the meaning shifts to an action they can; see stative verbs.
- Habit and general truth need not the Continuous but the Present Simple (the PHOTO/VIDEO distinction).
- Signal words (now, today...) help but they are not a guarantee; the NOW family → Continuous, the EVERY family → Simple, but meaning makes the decision.
- Turkish -iyor is a good bridge, but with habit and stative verbs a literal translation misleads.
- For the future the Continuous is the most "arranged" one; going to for intention, will for an instant decision/prediction; see will / going to.
