Bunun yerine geleceği yardımcı sözcüklerle kurarız: will, be going to ve gelecek anlamı kazanan iki şimdiki zaman.
- will — tahmin, söz, teklif, konuşma anındaki karar
- be going to — önceden verilmiş plan/niyet ve kanıta dayalı tahmin
- present continuous — kişisel, ayarlanmış randevular (Şimdiki Zaman)
- present simple — sabit programlar, takvimler (Geniş Zaman)
Şimdi, konuşurken → will. Önceden, zaten niyetliydim → going to.
2) Elimde kanıt var mı? Sadece düşünüyorum/tahmin ediyorum → will. Gözümle bir işaret görüyorum → going to.
Bu iki soru, konunun neredeyse tamamını çözer. Kısaca: "NE ZAMAN + KANIT" diye hatırla.
Talking about the future is easy in Turkish: you add the ending -ecek/-acak to the verb and you're done. Yağmur yağacak. Ders çalışacağım. Sana yardım edeceğim. All three use the same ending. But in English, each of these is said with a different structure, because when English looks at the future it also encodes the relationship in the speaker's mind: Was this a plan, or did you just decide now? Do you have evidence, or are you just guessing? Is it a promise, or a schedule?
This is exactly why there is no single future tense in English. Grammatically, English doesn't even have a real "future tense conjugation" (there is no "future form" of the verb like the past form worked). Instead, we build the future with helper words: will, be going to, and two present tenses that take on future meaning.
- will — prediction, promise, offer, a decision at the moment of speaking
- be going to — a plan/intention made beforehand and an evidence-based prediction
- present continuous — personal, arranged appointments (Present Continuous)
- present simple — fixed schedules, timetables (Present Simple)
An analogy might help: in English the future is not a single door but four separate doors, and above each door it says "in which situation you go through here". Turkish sends everything through the -ecek door; English forces you to choose the right door. The good news is this: the logic that separates the doors is not arbitrary, it is very consistent. If you ask when was the decision made (now or beforehand) and do I have evidence (opinion or observation), the right door almost always reveals itself. Throughout this topic we'll ask the same two questions again and again.
1) When did I make the decision? Now, while speaking → will. Beforehand, I already intended it → going to.
2) Do I have evidence? I'm just thinking/guessing → will. I can see a sign with my own eyes → going to.
These two questions solve almost the whole topic. In short, remember it as: "WHEN + EVIDENCE".
- İngilizcede geleceği anlatmanın birden çok yolu vardır; hangisini seçtiğin anlamı değiştirir.
- will + yalın fiil: She will call you. Özneye göre değişmez (I/you/he hepsi will).
- Kısaltma çok yaygındır: I'll, you'll, she'll, we'll, they'll. Olumsuz: won't (= will not).
- be going to + yalın fiil: I am going to travel. Burada be özneye göre çekilir (am/is/are).
- will genelde şu an verilen kararlar, tahminler, sözler ve teklifler için kullanılır.
- be going to önceden yapılmış planlar ve gözle görünen kanıta dayalı tahminler içindir.
- Present continuous (I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow) ayarlanmış kişisel randevular içindir.
- Present simple (The film starts at 8) tren/otobüs/sinema gibi sabit programlar içindir.
- There are several ways to talk about the future in English; which one you choose changes the meaning.
- will + base verb: She will call you. It doesn't change with the subject (I/you/he all take will).
- Contraction is very common: I'll, you'll, she'll, we'll, they'll. Negative: won't (= will not).
- be going to + base verb: I am going to travel. Here be is conjugated with the subject (am/is/are).
- will is generally used for decisions made now, predictions, promises and offers.
- be going to is for plans made beforehand and predictions based on visible evidence.
- Present continuous (I'm seeing the doctor tomorrow) is for arranged personal appointments.
- Present simple (The film starts at 8) is for fixed schedules like trains/buses/cinemas.
- Clue words (tomorrow, next week, soon) help but don't guarantee which structure you should choose.
- Because Turkish covers everything with a single -ecek ending, when translating into English you should think: is it intention, prediction, or plan?
will — olumlu, olumsuz, soru
Formül: özne + will + fiil (yalın). will bir yardımcı fiildir (modal); özneye göre değişmez ve ardından -s / -ed almayan yalın fiil gelir. Olumsuz: will not = won't. Soru: Will + özne + fiil?
be going to — olumlu, olumsuz, soru
Formül: özne + am/is/are + going to + fiil (yalın). Buradaki değişen parça be fiilidir (I am, he/she/it is, you/we/they are). Olumsuz için be'yi olumsuz yap: isn't / aren't / 'm not going to. Soru için be'yi öne al.
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Will you help? | Yes, I will. | No, I won't. |
| Is she going to come? | Yes, she is. | No, she isn't. |
| Are they going to sign? | Yes, they are. | No, they aren't / they're not. |
1) -s yok: will özneye göre çekilmez → He will
2) to yok: will'den sonra yalın fiil gelir → I will
Not: to yalnızca be going to yapısına aittir; oradaki to'yu will'e taşıma. İki yapıyı ayrı kutularda tut.
will — affirmative, negative, question
Formula: subject + will + verb (base). will is an auxiliary verb (a modal); it does not change with the subject, and it is followed by the base verb, which takes no -s / -ed. Negative: will not = won't. Question: Will + subject + verb?
be going to — affirmative, negative, question
Formula: subject + am/is/are + going to + verb (base). The part that changes here is the verb be (I am, he/she/it is, you/we/they are). For the negative, make be negative: isn't / aren't / 'm not going to. For the question, move be to the front.
| Question | Affirmative short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Will you help? | Yes, I will. | No, I won't. |
| Is she going to come? | Yes, she is. | No, she isn't. |
| Are they going to sign? | Yes, they are. | No, they aren't / they're not. |
1) no -s: will is not conjugated with the subject → NOT He will
2) no to: the base verb follows will → NOT I will
Note: to belongs only to the be going to structure; don't carry that to over to will. Keep the two structures in separate boxes.
Anlık karar → will
Kararı konuşma anında verirsin: "We're out of milk." "Oh, I'll buy some."
Önceden plan → going to
Niyet konuşmadan önce vardı: We're going to paint the kitchen.
Kanıta dayalı tahmin → going to
Gözle görünen işaret var: Look at those clouds — it's going to rain.
1) Anlık karar (spontaneous decision) — will
Konuşma anında, o an oluşan kararlar için will kullanılır. Karar önceden yoktu; şu an oluştu. Bu, will'in en tipik kullanımıdır ve be going to'dan ayrıldığı ilk yerdir.
2) Önceden yapılmış plan / niyet — be going to
Karar konuşmadan önce alınmışsa, yani zaten yapmaya niyetliysen, be going to kullanılır.
3) Tahmin — will (görüş) ve be going to (kanıt)
İkisi de tahmin için kullanılır ama farklı temele dayanır. will: kişisel görüş/inanç/beklenti (genelde I think, probably, I'm sure ile). be going to: şu an görünen kanıta dayalı tahmin.
4) Söz ve teklif — will
5) Ayarlanmış randevu — present continuous
6) Program / takvim — present simple
"O an karar = 'll" (I'll get it)
"Zaten niyet = going to" (I'm going to travel)
"Ayarladım = -ing" (I'm meeting Sam)
"Çizelge = -s" (The train leaves).
Bu dört kalıbı yüksek sesle birkaç kez tekrarla; sınavda cümleyi bu dört kutudan hangisine koyacağını saniyeler içinde bulursun.
Spontaneous decision → will
You make the decision at the moment of speaking: "We're out of milk." "Oh, I'll buy some."
Prior plan → going to
The intention existed before speaking: We're going to paint the kitchen.
Evidence-based prediction → going to
There is a visible sign: Look at those clouds — it's going to rain.
1) Spontaneous decision — will
will is used for decisions formed at the moment of speaking. There was no prior decision; it formed just now. This is will's most typical use, and the first place it separates from be going to.
2) A plan / intention made beforehand — be going to
If the decision was made before speaking — that is, if you already intended to do it — be going to is used. This emphasises the present intention behind a future action.
3) Prediction — will (opinion) and be going to (evidence)
Both are used for prediction but rest on different bases. will: a personal opinion/belief/expectation (usually with I think, probably, I'm sure). be going to: a prediction based on evidence visible now.
4) Promise and offer — will
5) Arranged appointment — present continuous
6) Timetable / schedule — present simple
"decision now = 'll" (I'll get it)
"already intended = going to" (I'm going to travel)
"I arranged it = -ing" (I'm meeting Sam)
"timetable = -s" (The train leaves).
Repeat these four patterns aloud a few times; in an exam you'll find which of the four boxes to put the sentence in within seconds.
Gelecek genelde bir zaman ifadesiyle birlikte gelir. Bunlar hangi zamanda konuştuğunu belli eder ama hangi gelecek yapısını seçeceğini tek başına söylemez.
| İfade | Anlam | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| tomorrow | yarın | I'll call you tomorrow. |
| next week / month / year | gelecek hafta/ay/yıl | We're moving next month. |
| tonight | bu gece | It's going to be cold tonight. |
| soon | yakında | The results will come out soon. |
| in + süre (in an hour) | ... sonra | The film starts in ten minutes. |
| by + zaman (by Friday) | ... e kadar | I'll finish it by Friday. |
| this evening / weekend | bu akşam / hafta sonu | What are you doing this weekend? |
The future usually comes with a time expression. These show which time you're speaking about, but they don't on their own tell you which future structure to choose.
| Expression | Meaning | Example |
|---|---|---|
| tomorrow | tomorrow | I'll call you tomorrow. |
| next week / month / year | next week/month/year | We're moving next month. |
| tonight | tonight | It's going to be cold tonight. |
| soon | soon | The results will come out soon. |
| in + duration (in an hour) | in ... | The film starts in ten minutes. |
| by + time (by Friday) | by ... | I'll finish it by Friday. |
| this evening / weekend | this evening / weekend | What are you doing this weekend? |
Kararı ne zaman verdin? Şu an oluştuysa → will ("I'll get it."). Önceden vardıysa → be going to ("I'm going to get it — I've waited all day.").
will ve be going to çoğu zaman ikisi de "dilbilgisel olarak doğru"dur; fark ne demek istediğinde gizlidir. Aşağıdaki inceliklerdir bir öğrenciyi B1'den C1'e taşıyan.
Nezaket ve rica: Will you...? bir rica olabilir (Will you close the door, please? = Kapıyı kapatır mısın?). Kesinlik dereceleri: will'i probably, definitely, I'm sure, might ile ayarlarsın: She'll probably be late daha temkinli, She'll definitely come daha kesin. Olasılık için may/might/could konusuna da bak.
might/may + will (belki) < will probably (muhtemelen) < will (sade tahmin) < will definitely / I'm sure ... will (kesinlikle).
Örnek: She might come → She'll probably come → She'll come → She'll definitely come. Aynı fiil, dört farklı kesinlik. İnce olasılık tonları için may/might/could'a bak.
| Soru | will | be going to |
|---|---|---|
| Karar ne zaman verildi? | Şimdi, konuşurken | Önceden, zaten niyetliydim |
| Tahminin temeli ne? | Görüş / inanç / sezgi | Gözle görünen kanıt |
| Sık eşlik eden kelimeler | I think, probably, I'm sure, promise | Look!, already, the plan is... |
| Tipik işlev | söz, teklif, anlık tepki, uzak öngörü | plan/niyet, yakın-kaçınılmaz sonuç |
| Örnek | I'll help you. | I'm going to travel. |
When did you make the decision? If it formed just now → will ("I'll get it."). If it existed beforehand → be going to ("I'm going to get it — I've waited all day.").
will and be going to are often both "grammatically correct"; the difference is hidden in what you mean. It is the nuances below that carry a learner from B1 to C1.
Politeness and requests: Will you...? can be a request (Will you close the door, please? = Would you close the door?). Degrees of certainty: you tune will with probably, definitely, I'm sure, might: She'll probably be late is more cautious, She'll definitely come more certain. For probability, also see the may/might/could topic.
might/may + will (maybe) < will probably (probably) < will (a plain prediction) < will definitely / I'm sure ... will (definitely).
Example: She might come → She'll probably come → She'll come → She'll definitely come. The same verb, four different degrees of certainty. For fine tones of probability, see may/might/could.
| Question | will | be going to |
|---|---|---|
| When was the decision made? | Now, while speaking | Beforehand, I already intended it |
| What is the prediction based on? | Opinion / belief / intuition | Visible evidence |
| Frequently accompanying words | I think, probably, I'm sure, promise | Look!, already, the plan is... |
| Typical function | promise, offer, spontaneous reaction, distant forecast | plan/intention, near-inevitable result |
| Example | I'll help you. | I'm going to travel. |
Türkçe
Tek ek her şeyi anlatır: -ecek/-acak (plan, tahmin, karar, söz) ve geniş zaman gelirim.
İngilizce
Ayrı yapılara böler: will / be going to / present continuous / present simple.
- Türkçe -ecek = İngilizce'de bağlama göre will / going to / present continuous / present simple.
- Türkçe geniş zaman gelirim, yardım ederim çoğu zaman will'e denk gelir (söz/teklif/anlık karar).
- Türkçede "yağmur yağacak" tek biçimdir; İngilizcede kanıt varsa going to, sırf tahminse will.
Turkish
A single ending covers everything: -ecek/-acak (plan, prediction, decision, promise) and the aorist gelirim.
English
Splits into separate structures: will / be going to / present continuous / present simple.
The Turkish -ecek/-acak ending is the same for "plan", "prediction", "spontaneous decision" and "promise". In addition, the Turkish aorist (-ir/-er) often carries future meaning too (Yarın gelirim). Because English splits these distinctions into separate structures, a word-for-word translation from Turkish drives you into the wrong structure.
- Turkish -ecek = in English, depending on context, will / going to / present continuous / present simple.
- The Turkish aorist gelirim, yardım ederim often corresponds to will (promise/offer/spontaneous decision).
- In Turkish "yağmur yağacak" is a single form; in English it's going to if there is evidence, will if it's just a guess.
- Anlık karar, söz, tahmin (görüş)? → will (I'll help you.)
- Önceden plan / kanıta dayalı tahmin? → be going to (I'm going to travel.)
- Ayarlanmış kişisel randevu? → present continuous (I'm meeting Sam at six.)
- Sabit program / takvim? → present simple (The train leaves at nine.)
| Yapı | Ne için | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| will | tahmin, söz, teklif, anlık karar | I'll help you. |
| be going to | önceden plan, kanıta dayalı tahmin | I'm going to travel. |
| present continuous | ayarlanmış kişisel randevu | I'm meeting Sam at six. |
| present simple | sabit program/takvim | The train leaves at nine. |
| first conditional (if + present, will) | koşula bağlı gelecek | If it rains, we'll stay in. |
Bu beş yapı birbirinin rakibi değil, bir iş bölümüdür: her biri geleceğin farklı bir yüzünü anlatır. will ve be going to tahmin/plan eksenini paylaşırken, iki şimdiki zaman (present continuous ve present simple) zaten kesinleşmiş gelecek olaylarını taşır: senin ayarladığın randevu ya da takvimin sabitlediği program. Birinci tip koşul ise geleceği bir şarta bağlar (if + present, ana cümlede will). Yani seçim yaparken önce şunu sor: olay kesinleşmiş mi (present continuous/simple), yoksa hâlâ tahmin/niyet mi (will/going to), yoksa bir koşula mı bağlı (first conditional)? Bu üçlü ayrım, doğru yapıyı hızla daraltır.
- Spontaneous decision, promise, prediction (opinion)? → will (I'll help you.)
- Prior plan / evidence-based prediction? → be going to (I'm going to travel.)
- An arranged personal appointment? → present continuous (I'm meeting Sam at six.)
- A fixed schedule / timetable? → present simple (The train leaves at nine.)
| Structure | What for | Example |
|---|---|---|
| will | prediction, promise, offer, spontaneous decision | I'll help you. |
| be going to | prior plan, evidence-based prediction | I'm going to travel. |
| present continuous | arranged personal appointment | I'm meeting Sam at six. |
| present simple | fixed schedule/timetable | The train leaves at nine. |
| first conditional (if + present, will) | a future conditional on something | If it rains, we'll stay in. |
These five structures are not rivals but a division of labour: each describes a different face of the future. While will and be going to share the prediction/plan axis, the two present tenses (present continuous and present simple) carry future events that are already settled: an appointment you arranged, or a schedule fixed by a timetable. The first conditional ties the future to a condition (if + present, will in the main clause). So when choosing, ask first: is the event settled (present continuous/simple), still a prediction/intention (will/going to), or tied to a condition (first conditional)? This three-way split quickly narrows down the right structure.
will bir modaldır: ardından to gelmez ve özneye göre çekilmez. I will to call / She wills come ✗ → I will call / She will come ✓.
will is a modal: no to follows it and it is not conjugated with the subject. I will to call / She wills come ✗ → I will call / She will come ✓.
shall: Eski/resmî İngilizcede I ve we ile gelecek için shall kullanılırdı (I shall return). Günümüz İngilizcesinde bu nadirdir; ama Shall I...? / Shall we...? hâlâ canlı: teklif ve öneri sorularında kullanılır.
be going to go / come: Konuşmada going to go ve going to come kulağa tekrarlı geldiği için sık sık present continuous'a dönüşür: I'm going to the cinema tonight (= gitmeye niyetliyim/gidiyorum). Bu bir hata değil, doğal bir tercihtir.
shall: In old/formal English, shall was used for the future with I and we (I shall return). In present-day English this is rare; but Shall I...? / Shall we...? is still alive: it is used in offer and suggestion questions.
be going to go / come: In speech, because going to go and going to come sound repetitive, they often turn into the present continuous: I'm going to the cinema tonight (= I intend to go / I'm going). This is not a mistake but a natural preference.
Akademik ve resmî yazıda will tahmin, sonuç ve genel öngörü için baskındır; be going to daha konuşma diline aittir ve akademik metinde nadir kullanılır. Kesinliği azaltmak için will genelde likely, probably, may, might ve is expected to gibi ifadelerle yumuşatılır (hedging).
- will play / will overtake / will need = akademik öngörü için baskın yapı.
- are likely to, is expected to = kesinliği yumuşatan akademik ifadeler (hedging).
- is not going to happen overnight = burada bilinçli olarak konuşma dilinden bir vurgu; kaçınılmaz olmayan bir sonucu inkâr ediyor.
In academic and formal writing, will is dominant for prediction, consequence and general forecasting; be going to is more colloquial and is rare in academic texts. To reduce certainty, will is usually softened with expressions like likely, probably, may, might and is expected to (hedging).
- will play / will overtake / will need = the dominant structure for academic forecasting.
- are likely to, is expected to = academic expressions that soften certainty (hedging).
- is not going to happen overnight = here a deliberate colloquial emphasis; it denies a non-inevitable outcome.
- I'm going to start / I'm going to explore / I'm going to work = önceden verilmiş, kararlı planlar → be going to.
- she was leaving on the fifteenth / her taxi was arriving at six = ayarlanmış randevular (geçmişte anlatıldığı için present continuous'un geçmiş hâli).
- what will happen / it'll be an adventure / The first week will be hard = kanıtsız tahmin/beklenti → will.
- You're going to miss us / I'm not going to look back = konuşanın sezgiye/niyete dayalı öngörüsü → be going to.
- I'll call every Sunday, I promise / I'll get used to it = söz ve kişisel niyet → will.
- the plane lands here in three hours = program/takvim → present simple.
- what are you doing on your first day / I'm meeting my new landlord at ten = ayarlanmış kişisel randevu → present continuous.
- The training course starts at nine / It runs every weekday = sabit program/çizelge → present simple.
- By the summer, I'll have made real friends = future perfect (will have + V3): bir gelecek noktadan önce tamamlanma. Bkz. gelecekte süreklilik ve tamamlanma.
- It's going to rain = görünen kanıt (gri gökyüzü) → be going to.
- I'm going to start / I'm going to explore / I'm going to work = firm plans made beforehand → be going to.
- she was leaving on the fifteenth / her taxi was arriving at six = arranged appointments (the past form of the present continuous, since it's narrated in the past).
- what will happen / it'll be an adventure / The first week will be hard = evidence-free prediction/expectation → will.
- You're going to miss us / I'm not going to look back = the speaker's forecast based on intuition/intention → be going to.
- I'll call every Sunday, I promise / I'll get used to it = promise and personal intention → will.
- the plane lands here in three hours = schedule/timetable → present simple.
- what are you doing on your first day / I'm meeting my new landlord at ten = an arranged personal appointment → present continuous.
- The training course starts at nine / It runs every weekday = a fixed schedule/timetable → present simple.
- By the summer, I'll have made real friends = future perfect (will have + V3): completion before a future point. See continuity and completion in the future.
- It's going to rain = visible evidence (the grey sky) → be going to.

Dört yapının hepsini en az bir kez kullanmaya çalış: will, be going to, present continuous (randevu), present simple (program).
- Kesin bir planını be going to ile yaz: I'm going to...
- Bir tahminini/beklentini will ile yaz: I think... will...
- Ayarlanmış bir randevunu present continuous ile yaz: I'm ...-ing on...
- Sabit bir programı present simple ile yaz: ... starts / opens at...
- Bir söz veya niyet ekle: I'll definitely...
Task: Write a short paragraph of 8–10 sentences titled "My plans and predictions for the coming year". Try to use all four structures at least once each: will, be going to, present continuous (appointment), present simple (schedule).
- Write a firm plan with be going to: I'm going to...
- Write a prediction/expectation with will: I think... will...
- Write an arranged appointment with present continuous: I'm ...-ing on...
- Write a fixed schedule with present simple: ... starts / opens at...
- Add a promise or intention: I'll definitely...
(will/going to ayrımı) veya "Bunu söylerken kanıt görüyor mu?"
Etkinlik önerisi: "Kapı çaldı / süt bitti / valiz düştü" gibi durum kartları dağıt; öğrenciler duruma anında sözlü tepki versin (I'll get it! / You're going to drop it!). Anlık tepki üretmek, will'in anlık-karar işlevini bedene yerleştirir. Ardından "gelecek yıl planların" konuşması going to ve present continuous'u pekiştirir.
Concept-check questions (CCQs): After giving a learner a sentence, ask: "When did they decide — now or beforehand?" (the will/going to distinction) or "Do they see evidence as they say this?" (opinion vs evidence). These questions test not the rule but the situation in the mind, and measure real mastery.
Activity idea: Hand out situation cards like "the doorbell rang / we've run out of milk / the suitcase fell"; learners give an instant spoken reaction to the situation (I'll get it! / You're going to drop it!). Producing an instant reaction embeds will's spontaneous-decision function in the body. Then a "your plans for next year" conversation reinforces going to and the present continuous.
- İngilizcede tek bir gelecek zaman yoktur; will, be going to, present continuous, present simple farklı gelecek anlamları taşır.
- will + yalın fiil: anlık karar, tahmin (görüş), söz, teklif. Özneye göre değişmez; olumsuzu won't.
- be going to + yalın fiil: önceden yapılmış plan/niyet ve kanıta dayalı tahmin.
- present continuous: ayarlanmış kişisel randevular (I'm meeting Sam at six).
- present simple: sabit programlar/takvimler (The train leaves at nine).
- İpucu kelimeleri (tomorrow, next week) zamanı belli eder ama yapıyı garanti etmez; anlamı düşün.
- Türkçe tek -ecek ekiyle hepsini karşılar; birebir çeviri seni yanlış yapıya götürebilir.
- En sık hatalar: will to, will'e -s ekleme, kanıt varken will, anlık kararda going to, zaman bağlacından sonra will.
- İkisi çoğu bağlamda değiştirilebilir; ustalık, farkın belirgin olduğu durumları tanımaktır.
- Bağlantılı konular: birinci tip koşullar, olasılık modalları, Şimdiki Zaman, Geniş Zaman.
- There is no single future tense in English; will, be going to, present continuous, present simple carry different future meanings.
- will + base verb: spontaneous decision, prediction (opinion), promise, offer. It doesn't change with the subject; its negative is won't.
- be going to + base verb: a plan/intention made beforehand and a prediction based on evidence.
- present continuous: arranged personal appointments (I'm meeting Sam at six).
- present simple: fixed schedules/timetables (The train leaves at nine).
- Clue words (tomorrow, next week) show the time but don't guarantee the structure; think about the meaning.
- Turkish covers everything with a single -ecek ending; a word-for-word translation can lead you to the wrong structure.
- Most common mistakes: will to, adding -s to will, will when there is evidence, going to for a spontaneous decision, will after a time conjunction.
- The two are interchangeable in most contexts; mastery is recognising the cases where the difference is clear.
