Past Continuous, geçmişteki bir anı içeriden gösteren bir kameradır. Past Simple size bir olayın olup bittiğini söyler ("I read the book" — kitabı okudum, bitti). Past Continuous ise sizi olayın tam ortasına ışınlar: "At 9 p.m. I was reading the book" — saat 9'da kitabı okumakta idim; eylem o anda henüz sürüyordu, başı ve sonu görünmüyordu.
- was ile were arasındaki özne seçimi (I was ama you were) unutulur.
- Durum fiilleri (know, want, like gibi) genellikle -ing almaz; öğrenci "I was knowing" gibi yanlışlar yapar. Bkz. stative verbs.
- when ve while hangi eyleme bağlanır sorusu kafa karıştırır.
Past Continuous is a camera that shows a moment in the past from the inside. The Past Simple tells you that an event happened and finished ("I read the book" — I read the book, done). The Past Continuous, on the other hand, teleports you to the very middle of the event: "At 9 p.m. I was reading the book" — at 9 p.m. I was reading the book; the action was still going on at that moment, its beginning and end were not visible.
This is exactly why this tense exists: in English you need to distinguish whether an action is a completed one or one still in progress at that moment. Turkish does this with a suffix: okudu (completed) — okuyordu (ongoing). English does this with a separate verb tense.
The Turkish equivalent
Good news: the Past Continuous maps almost exactly onto the Turkish "-iyordu" suffix. This is a big advantage for Turkish learners.
Why is it hard for learners?
- In Turkish a single "-di" past can sometimes stand for both "okudu" and "okuyordu"; English, however, distinguishes the two clearly and you must choose the right one.
- was and were — the subject choice between them (I was but you were) is forgotten.
- Stative verbs (like know, want, like) generally don't take -ing; learners make mistakes like "I was knowing". See stative verbs.
- when and while — the question of which action each attaches to is confusing.
- Yapı: özne + was/were + fiil-ing. (I was working / They were working)
- was → I, he, she, it. were → you, we, they.
- Anlamı Türkçedeki "-iyordu": geçmişte o an süren eylem.
- Olumsuz: wasn't / weren't + -ing. (She wasn't sleeping.)
- Soru: Was/Were + özne + -ing? (Were you working?)
- En sık kullanım: uzun bir eylemi kesen kısa bir olay — when + Past Simple. (I was cooking when he called.)
- Aynı anda süren iki eylem için while kullanılır. (While I was reading, she was cooking.)
- Durum fiilleri (know, love, want, believe) genellikle bu zamanda kullanılmaz.
- Sık zaman ifadeleri: at 8 o'clock, at that moment, all day, while, when.
- Kısa cevap: Yes, I was. / No, I wasn't.
- Structure: subject + was/were + verb-ing. (I was working / They were working)
- was → I, he, she, it. were → you, we, they.
- Its meaning is the Turkish "-iyordu": an action in progress at that moment in the past.
- Negative: wasn't / weren't + -ing. (She wasn't sleeping.)
- Question: Was/Were + subject + -ing? (Were you working?)
- Most common use: a short event interrupting a long action — when + Past Simple. (I was cooking when he called.)
- For two actions in progress at the same time, use while. (While I was reading, she was cooking.)
- Stative verbs (know, love, want, believe) are generally not used in this tense.
- Common time expressions: at 8 o'clock, at that moment, all day, while, when.
- Short answer: Yes, I was. / No, I wasn't.
Olumlu cümle
Formül: özne + was/were + fiil-ing. Yardımcı fiil özneye göre seçilir; asıl fiil değişmeden -ing eki alır.
Olumsuz cümle
Formül: özne + was/were + not + fiil-ing. Kısaltmalar: wasn't, weren't. Günlük konuşmada kısaltma neredeyse her zaman kullanılır.
Soru cümlesi
Formül: Was/Were + özne + fiil-ing? Yardımcı fiil öznenin önüne geçer. Wh- sorularında soru kelimesi en başa gelir: What were you doing?
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Were you working? | Yes, I was. | No, I wasn't. |
| Was she reading? | Yes, she was. | No, she wasn't. |
| Were they playing? | Yes, they were. | No, they weren't. |
Affirmative sentence
Formula: subject + was/were + verb-ing. The auxiliary is chosen according to the subject; the main verb takes -ing without otherwise changing.
Negative sentence
Formula: subject + was/were + not + verb-ing. Contractions: wasn't, weren't. In everyday speech the contraction is almost always used.
Question sentence
Formula: Was/Were + subject + verb-ing? The auxiliary moves in front of the subject. In Wh- questions the question word comes first: What were you doing?
| Question | Affirmative short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Were you working? | Yes, I was. | No, I wasn't. |
| Was she reading? | Yes, she was. | No, she wasn't. |
| Were they playing? | Yes, they were. | No, they weren't. |
Asıl fiil (work → working) hiç değişmez; sadece yardımcı fiil was/were özneye göre seçilir. Örnek fiil: to work.
| Özne | Biçim | Örnek | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | was working | I was working. | Çalışıyordum. |
| You | were working | You were working. | Çalışıyordun. |
| He | was working | He was working. | (O) çalışıyordu. |
| She | was working | She was working. | (O) çalışıyordu. |
| It | was working | It was working. | Çalışıyordu. |
| We | were working | We were working. | Çalışıyorduk. |
| You | were working | You were working. | Çalışıyordunuz. |
| They | were working | They were working. | Çalışıyorlardı. |
The main verb (work → working) never changes; only the auxiliary was/were is chosen according to the subject. Example verb: to work.
| Subject | Form | Example | Turkish |
|---|---|---|---|
| I | was working | I was working. | Çalışıyordum. |
| You | were working | You were working. | Çalışıyordun. |
| He | was working | He was working. | (O) çalışıyordu. |
| She | was working | She was working. | (O) çalışıyordu. |
| It | was working | It was working. | Çalışıyordu. |
| We | were working | We were working. | Çalışıyorduk. |
| You | were working | You were working. | Çalışıyordunuz. |
| They | were working | They were working. | Çalışıyorlardı. |
Past Continuous'ın tek yazım zorluğu asıl fiile eklenen -ing ekidir. Kurallar Present Continuous ile birebir aynıdır.
| Kural | Nasıl | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Genel | fiile doğrudan -ing ekle | play → playing, read → reading |
| Sessiz -e ile biten | -e düşer, -ing eklenir | make → making, write → writing |
| Tek heceli, sesli+sessizle biten | son sessiz harf çiftlenir | run → running, sit → sitting, stop → stopping |
| -ie ile biten | -ie → -y + ing | lie → lying, die → dying |
| Vurgusuz son hece | sessiz harf ÇİFTLENMEZ | open → opening, listen → listening |
| -c ile biten (nadir) | -ck olur | panic → panicking |
The only spelling difficulty of the Past Continuous is the -ing suffix added to the main verb. The rules are exactly the same as the Present Continuous.
| Rule | How | Example |
|---|---|---|
| General | add -ing directly to the verb | play → playing, read → reading |
| Ending in silent -e | -e drops, -ing is added | make → making, write → writing |
| One syllable, ending vowel+consonant | the final consonant is doubled | run → running, sit → sitting, stop → stopping |
| Ending in -ie | -ie → -y + ing | lie → lying, die → dying |
| Unstressed final syllable | the consonant is NOT doubled | open → opening, listen → listening |
| Ending in -c (rare) | becomes -ck | panic → panicking |
Past Continuous'ı çoğu zaman tek başına değil, onu kesen bir Past Simple olayıyla birlikte düşün: uzun eylem sürerken kısa bir olay araya girer.
1) Kesilen arka plan eylemi (en yaygın)
Uzun, süren bir eylem devam ederken kısa bir olay araya girer. Uzun eylem Past Continuous, kesen kısa olay Past Simple alır. Bağlaç genellikle when'dir.
2) Belirli bir andaki eylem
Geçmişte kesin bir zaman noktasında (at 8 o'clock, at that moment) neyin sürdüğünü anlatır. Olay o an tam ortasındaydı.
Most of the time, think of the Past Continuous not on its own but together with a Past Simple event that interrupts it: while a long action is going on, a short event breaks in.
1) The interrupted background action (most common)
While a long, ongoing action continues, a short event breaks in. The long action takes the Past Continuous, the interrupting short event takes the Past Simple. The conjunction is usually when.
2) An action at a specific moment
It describes what was going on at a precise point in the past (at 8 o'clock, at that moment). The event was right in the middle at that moment.
3) Two actions in progress at the same time
If both actions are ongoing in the same time frame, both are Past Continuous; usually joined with while.
4) Setting the scene for a story/narrative
Used in novels, stories and anecdotes to set the background and atmosphere; the main events then come in the Past Simple.
5) Changing/developing situations
Emphasises a situation that was slowly changing in the past; usually with verbs like getting, becoming, growing.
Bazı kelimeler Past Continuous'ı çağrıştırır, ama bunlar garanti değildir — cümlenin anlamına bakmak gerekir. Örneğin when hem Past Simple hem Past Continuous ile kullanılır.
| İfade | Türkçe | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| while | -iken / -irken | While I was reading, he called. |
| when | -diğinde | I was reading when he called. |
| as | -iken (eşzamanlı) | As I was leaving, it started to rain. |
| at that moment | o anda | At that moment, she was crying. |
| at 8 o'clock | saat 8'de | At 8 o'clock I was still sleeping. |
| all day / all night | bütün gün / gece | It was snowing all night. |
| this time yesterday | dün bu saatlerde | This time yesterday we were flying. |
Some words suggest the Past Continuous, but they are not a guarantee — you must look at the meaning of the sentence. For example, when is used with both the Past Simple and the Past Continuous.
| Expression | Turkish | Example |
|---|---|---|
| while | -iken / -irken | While I was reading, he called. |
| when | -diğinde | I was reading when he called. |
| as | -iken (eşzamanlı) | As I was leaving, it started to rain. |
| at that moment | o anda | At that moment, she was crying. |
| at 8 o'clock | saat 8'de | At 8 o'clock I was still sleeping. |
| all day / all night | bütün gün / gece | It was snowing all night. |
| this time yesterday | dün bu saatlerde | This time yesterday we were flying. |
Tamamlanmış mı, süregelen mi? Aynı olay iki zamanla farklı anlam verir. Past Simple bitmiş bütün olayı, Past Continuous o anki kesiti gösterir.
Nezaket ve yumuşatma. "I was wondering..." / "I was hoping..." kalıbı, istekleri daha kibar ve dolaylı yapar. Past Continuous burada geçmiş anlamı taşımaz; mesafe koyarak nezaket katar.
Kasıt ve tamamlanmama. Past Continuous eylemin sürdüğünü ama mutlaka bitmediğini ima eder; bu bazen ince bir mazeret ya da eksiklik anlamı katar.
Completed or ongoing? The same event gives a different meaning in the two tenses. The Past Simple shows the whole finished event, the Past Continuous shows the slice at that moment.
Politeness and softening. "I was wondering..." / "I was hoping..." patterns make requests more polite and indirect. The Past Continuous carries no past meaning here; it adds politeness by creating distance.
Intention and incompleteness. The Past Continuous implies the action was ongoing but not necessarily finished; this sometimes adds a subtle sense of excuse or incompleteness.
Past Continuous, Türkçedeki "-iyordu" ekine çok yakın olduğu için Türk öğrenci için en kolay İngilizce zamanlardan biridir. Ama birebir çeviri bazı tuzaklar barındırır.
Türkçe
Süreklilik eke gömülüdür (oku-yor-du); ayrı yardımcı fiil yoktur ve fiil kişiye göre çekilir.İngilizce
Ayrı yardımcı fiil was/were + ana fiile -ing gerekir (I was reading); yardımcı özneye göre değişir.- Türkçede yardımcı fiil yoktur; ek fiilin içindedir (oku-yor-du). İngilizcede ise ayrı bir was/were gerekir — bunu unutmak en sık hatadır.
- Türkçede özneye göre was/were ayrımı yoktur; "ben-sen-o" hepsi "-yordu" alır. İngilizce ise özneye göre değiştirir.
- Türkçede durum fiilleri de "-iyor" alabilir (biliyordum, istiyordum). İngilizcede ise 'know, want' gibi fiiller -ing almaz; bu doğrudan çeviri hatasına yol açar.
Because the Past Continuous is so close to the Turkish "-iyordu" suffix, it is one of the easiest English tenses for Turkish learners. But word-for-word translation hides some traps.
Turkish
Continuity is embedded in the suffix (oku-yor-du); there is no separate auxiliary and the verb is conjugated by person.English
A separate auxiliary was/were + -ing on the main verb is needed (I was reading); the auxiliary changes by subject.- Turkish has no auxiliary; the suffix is inside the verb (oku-yor-du). English, however, needs a separate was/were — forgetting it is the most common mistake.
- Turkish has no was/were distinction by subject; "ben-sen-o" all take "-yordu". English, however, changes it by subject.
- In Turkish, stative verbs can also take "-iyor" (biliyordum, istiyordum). In English, verbs like 'know, want' don't take -ing; this leads to direct-translation errors.
| Zaman | Odak | Örnek | Anlam |
|---|---|---|---|
| Past Continuous | Geçmişte süren, o an devam eden eylem | I was eating at 8. | Saat 8'de yeme eylemi ortasındaydı. |
| Past Simple | Geçmişte tamamlanmış, bitmiş eylem | I ate at 8. | Saat 8'de yedim (ve bitti). |
| Present Continuous | Şu an süren eylem | I am eating. | Şu anda yiyorum. |
| Past Perfect | Başka bir geçmiş olaydan önce biten eylem | I had eaten before he came. | O gelmeden önce yemiştim. |
| Tense | Focus | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| Past Continuous | An action ongoing in the past, in progress at that moment | I was eating at 8. | At 8 o'clock the eating was in progress. |
| Past Simple | A completed, finished action in the past | I ate at 8. | I ate at 8 (and it was finished). |
| Present Continuous | An action in progress now | I am eating. | I am eating right now. |
| Past Perfect | An action finished before another past event | I had eaten before he came. | I had eaten before he came. |
Bu bölümdeki hataların çoğu iki kökten gelir: yanlış "to be" seçimi (I/he/she/it → was; you/we/they → were) ve -ing ekini unutmak. Önce özneye doğru yardımcı fiili eşle, sonra fiile -ing ekle.
Most mistakes in this section come from two roots: the wrong "to be" choice (I/he/she/it → was; you/we/they → were) and -ing forgetting the -ing suffix. First match the correct auxiliary to the subject, then add -ing to the verb.
1) Durum fiilleri. know, believe, want, like, love, hate, understand, seem, belong gibi durum fiilleri normalde Past Continuous almaz. Bunlar geçmişte de Past Simple kullanır. Bkz. stative verbs.
2) Anlam değiştiren fiiller. Bazı fiiller anlamına göre hem durum hem eylem olabilir. 'think', 'have', 'see' eylem anlamındayken Continuous alabilir.
3) 'always' ile sinir bozucu tekrar. Past Continuous + always/constantly/forever geçmişte sürekli tekrar eden, genellikle rahatsız edici bir alışkanlığı anlatır. Bu bir gramer kuralı değil, duygusal bir renktir.
1) Stative verbs. Stative verbs like know, believe, want, like, love, hate, understand, seem, belong normally don't take the Past Continuous. In the past too they use the Past Simple. See stative verbs.
2) Verbs that change meaning. Some verbs can be both stative and dynamic depending on meaning. 'think', 'have', 'see' can take the Continuous when used in an action sense.
3) Annoying repetition with 'always'. Past Continuous + always/constantly/forever describes a constantly repeated, usually irritating habit in the past. This is not a grammar rule but an emotional colour.
Akademik yazıda Past Continuous, tarihsel bir dönemde süregelen koşulları ya da bir gelişimi tanımlamak için kullanılır. Deney raporlarında, tarih ve edebiyat analizlerinde arka plan koşullarını verir. Ana sonuç ve bulgular ise genellikle Past Simple ile aktarılır.
- 'were expanding', 'were drawing', 'were deteriorating' — dönem boyunca süregelen arka plan koşullarını verir.
- 'passed' (Past Simple) — belirli, tamamlanmış bir olayı (yasanın çıkması) işaretler.
- 'was still growing' — reformdan sonra bile devam eden süreci vurgular; 'still' bu sürerliği pekiştirir.
In academic writing, the Past Continuous is used to describe ongoing conditions or a development within a historical period. In experiment reports and history and literature analyses it provides the background conditions. The main results and findings, however, are usually conveyed with the Past Simple.
- 'were expanding', 'were drawing', 'were deteriorating' — give the background conditions ongoing throughout the period.
- 'passed' (Past Simple) — marks a specific, completed event (the passing of the law).
- 'was still growing' — emphasises the process continuing even after the reform; 'still' reinforces this ongoingness.
- 'was sleeping', 'was falling', 'was whistling', 'was lying' — hikâyenin açılışında sahneyi ve atmosferi kuran uzun arka plan eylemleri.
- 'heard', 'got up', 'looked', 'walked in' (Past Simple) — bu süren sahneyi kesen ve olay örgüsünü ilerleten ani, tamamlanmış olaylar.
- 'was getting louder and louder' — kademeli, süregelen bir değişimi (gitgide artan ses) vurgular; tek bir bitmiş olay değildir.
- 'was digging ... while ... was standing ... and shouting' — 'while' ile bağlanmış, aynı anda süren birden çok paralel eylem.
- 'was wagging', 'was ignoring' — köpeğin o an devam eden davranışını, sahnenin canlı ortasını gösterir.
- 'were both giggling ... while ... was still chasing' — iki tarafın eşzamanlı süren eylemleri; 'still' sürerliği pekiştirir.
- 'the rain had stopped and the sun was slowly breaking through' — burada Past Perfect (had stopped) daha önce biten bir olayı, Past Continuous (was breaking) ise o an süren yeni durumu birlikte verir.
- 'was sitting', 'was lying', 'was chewing', 'was standing', 'was smiling' — kapanışta sahnenin dinginleşmiş ama hâlâ süren hâlini verir; olay örgüsü bitmiş, atmosfer akmaya devam ediyor.
- 'was sleeping', 'was falling', 'was whistling', 'was lying' — long background actions that set the scene and atmosphere at the story's opening.
- 'heard', 'got up', 'looked', 'walked in' (Past Simple) — sudden, completed events that interrupt this ongoing scene and move the plot forward.
- 'was getting louder and louder' — emphasises a gradual, ongoing change (steadily rising sound); not a single finished event.
- 'was digging ... while ... was standing ... and shouting' — several parallel actions ongoing at the same time, joined with 'while'.
- 'was wagging', 'was ignoring' — show the dog's behaviour ongoing at that moment, the lively middle of the scene.
- 'were both giggling ... while ... was still chasing' — the simultaneous ongoing actions of both sides; 'still' reinforces the ongoingness.
- 'the rain had stopped and the sun was slowly breaking through' — here the Past Perfect (had stopped) gives an event finished earlier, while the Past Continuous (was breaking) gives the new situation ongoing at that moment, together.
- 'was sitting', 'was lying', 'was chewing', 'was standing', 'was smiling' — at the close, give the calmed but still-ongoing state of the scene; the plot is over, the atmosphere keeps flowing.

Aşağıdaki sorular kural ezberini değil, anlamı kontrol eder. Her cümlenin ne ima ettiğini düşün.
- 'When I arrived, she was cooking' vs 'When I arrived, she cooked' — fark ne?İlkinde ben vardığımda yemek zaten sürüyordu (arka plan). İkincisinde ben vardım, SONRA yemek yaptı (art arda iki olay).
- 'I was reading a book last night' cümlesi kitabı bitirdiğimi söyler mi?Hayır. Past Continuous süreci vurgular, tamamlanma bilgisi vermez; bitirmemiş de olabilirim.
- 'He was always interrupting me' cümlesi nötr bir bilgi mi verir?Hayır. 'always + Continuous' burada rahatsızlık/sitem tonu taşır: 'durup dururdu, beni deli ederdi' anlamı.
- 'I was wondering if you could help' cümlesi geçmiş bir merakı mı anlatır?Hayır. Bu bir nezaket kalıbıdır; şimdiki zamanda kibar bir rica bildirir.
- 'It was getting cold' neden Continuous?Kademeli, süregelen bir değişimi (gitgide soğuma) gösterir; tek bir bitmiş olay değil.
The questions below check not rote rules but meaning. Think about what each sentence implies.
- 'When I arrived, she was cooking' vs 'When I arrived, she cooked' — what's the difference? In the first, the cooking was already going on when I arrived (background). In the second, I arrived, THEN she cooked (two consecutive events).
- Does 'I was reading a book last night' say that I finished the book? No. The Past Continuous emphasises the process, gives no information about completion; I may not have finished it.
- Does 'He was always interrupting me' give neutral information? No. 'always + Continuous' here carries a tone of annoyance/reproach: the sense of 'he kept doing it, it drove me crazy'.
- Does 'I was wondering if you could help' describe a past curiosity? No. This is a politeness pattern; it expresses a polite request in the present.
- Why is 'It was getting cold' Continuous? It shows a gradual, ongoing change (getting steadily colder); not a single finished event.

Görev: Geçmişte yaşadığın (veya hayal ettiğin) ilginç bir anı, 6-8 cümlelik kısa bir paragrafla anlat. Amacın Past Continuous ile arka planı kurmak, Past Simple ile olayları ilerletmek.
Rehber sorular
- O sırada neredeydin ve ne yapıyordun? (Past Continuous ile kur: I was walking...)
- Hava/ortam nasıldı? (It was raining / The streets were getting busy...)
- Aniden ne oldu? Seni ne kesti? (Past Simple: Suddenly, someone shouted...)
- Sen ve çevrendekiler o an ne yapıyordunuz? (eşzamanlı eylemler, while)
- Olay nasıl bitti?
Task: Tell an interesting moment you experienced (or imagined) in the past in a short paragraph of 6-8 sentences. Your aim is to set the background with the Past Continuous and move the events forward with the Past Simple.
Guiding questions
- Where were you and what were you doing at the time? (build with the Past Continuous: I was walking...)
- What was the weather/setting like? (It was raining / The streets were getting busy...)
- What happened suddenly? What interrupted you? (Past Simple: Suddenly, someone shouted...)
- What were you and those around you doing at that moment? (simultaneous actions, while)
- How did it end?
Kavram kontrolü (CCQ) örnekleri: "I was reading when he called" cümlesi için sor: "Did I start reading before or after he called?" (önce) — "Was the reading finished?" (bilmiyoruz/hayır). Bu sorular öğrencinin 'süren vs bitmiş' ayrımını gerçekten anlayıp anlamadığını gösterir.
- En sık iki hata: (1) yardımcı fiili düşürme (I working), (2) was/were karışması (you was). Bunları düzeltmeye öncelik ver.
- Durum fiilleri tuzağı: 'I was knowing' hatası Türkçe 'biliyordum'dan gelir; erken uyar, stative verbs listesini ver.
- Etkinlik önerisi: 'Alibi oyunu' — öğrenciler dün gece 8'de ne yaptıklarını Past Continuous ile savunur; diğerleri soru sorup çelişki bulmaya çalışır. Hem soru hem olumlu yapıyı canlı kullandırır.
- Görsel araç: zaman çizgisi çiz; uzun dalgalı çizgi (Continuous) + üzerine düşen dikey ok (kesen Simple olay). Bu görsel 'when/while' ayrımını netleştirir.
Concept-check (CCQ) examples: For the sentence "I was reading when he called", ask: "Did I start reading before or after he called?" (before) — "Was the reading finished?" (we don't know/no). These questions show whether the student really understands the 'ongoing vs finished' distinction.
- The two most common mistakes: (1) dropping the auxiliary (I working), (2) confusing was/were (you was). Prioritise correcting these.
- The stative-verb trap: the 'I was knowing' mistake comes from the Turkish 'biliyordum'; warn early, give the stative verbs list.
- Activity suggestion: 'The alibi game' — students defend what they were doing at 8 last night using the Past Continuous; the others ask questions and try to find contradictions. It brings both the question and affirmative forms to life.
- Visual aid: draw a timeline; a long wavy line (Continuous) + a vertical arrow falling onto it (the interrupting Simple event). This visual clarifies the 'when/while' distinction.
- Yapı: was/were + fiil-ing; anlamı Türkçedeki "-iyordu".
- was → I/he/she/it, were → you/we/they.
- En yaygın kullanım: uzun arka plan eylemini kesen kısa olay (when + Past Simple).
- Aynı anda süren iki eylem için while + Continuous, Continuous.
- Hikâye/anlatıda sahne ve atmosfer kurar; ana olaylar Past Simple ile ilerler.
- Olumsuz wasn't/weren't, soru Was/Were + özne + -ing? — 'did' ile yapılmaz.
- Durum fiilleri (know, want, love) genelde Continuous almaz — bkz. stative verbs.
- always + -ing = sinir bozucu tekrar; I was wondering... = nezaket kalıbı.
- İpucu kelimeleri (when, while, at 8) yardımcıdır ama garanti değildir; anlama bak.
- Continuous süreci/kesiti, Past Simple tamamlanmış bütünü gösterir.
- Structure: was/were + verb-ing; its meaning is the Turkish "-iyordu".
- was → I/he/she/it, were → you/we/they.
- Most common use: a short event interrupting a long background action (when + Past Simple).
- For two actions ongoing at the same time, while + Continuous, Continuous.
- In stories/narrative it sets the scene and atmosphere; the main events move on in the Past Simple.
- Negative wasn't/weren't, question Was/Were + subject + -ing? — not made with 'did'.
- Stative verbs (know, want, love) generally don't take the Continuous — see stative verbs.
- always + -ing = annoying repetition; I was wondering... = politeness pattern.
- Signal words (when, while, at 8) help but are not a guarantee; look at the meaning.
- The Continuous shows the process/slice, the Past Simple shows the completed whole.
