İngilizcede zaman (tense), bir eylemin ne zaman (geçmiş / şimdi / gelecek) ve nasıl (basit / sürekli / tamamlanmış / tamamlanmış-sürekli) gerçekleştiğini gösteren fiil biçimidir. Bu iki eksenin kesişimi toplam 12 zamanı verir. Türkçede çoğu zaman tek bir ekle çözülen bu ilişkiler, İngilizcede yardımcı fiil + fiilin biçimi (be, have, will + V1 / -ing / V3) ile kurulur. Bu rehber 12 zamanın hepsini yapı tablosu, kullanım mantığı, işaret sözcükleri ve bol örnek cümleyle tek tek ele alır; ardından Türk öğrencilerin en sık karıştırdığı noktaları ve doğru zamanı seçme yöntemini gösterir.
In English, tense is the verb form that shows when an action happens (past / present / future) and how it is viewed (simple / continuous / perfect / perfect continuous). The intersection of these two axes gives a total of 12 tenses. Relationships that Turkish usually resolves with a single suffix are built in English with an auxiliary verb + a form of the verb (be, have, will + V1 / -ing / V3). This guide covers all 12 tenses one by one with a form table, usage logic, signal words and plenty of example sentences; it then shows the points Turkish learners most often confuse and a method for choosing the right tense.
I lived in Ankara (artık yaşamıyorum) ile I have lived in Ankara (hâlâ orada olabilirim ya da deneyim vurgulanıyor) arasındaki fark yalnızca dilbilgisi değil, iletilen gerçekliğin ta kendisidir. Yanlış zaman, doğru kelimelerle bile yanlış mesaj verir.
İngilizce zaman sistemini iki basit soruyla düşünmek en sağlıklısıdır. Birincisi "Ne zaman?"
Türkçede "okudum" tek bir biçimken, İngilizcede bu düşünce bağlama göre I read, I have read veya I was reading olabilir. Bu yüzden zamanları öğrenirken kelime çevirisi değil, niyet çevirisi yapmak gerekir: "Ben bu cümleyle tam olarak ne demek istiyorum?" Bu soru, bu rehber boyunca tekrar tekrar karşına çıkacak ve doğru zamanı bulmanın gerçek anahtarı olacak.
Tense is the verb form that shows when an action happens and how it is perceived. Turkish largely resolves time with a single suffix (geldim, geliyorum, geleceğim); English does the same job by combining an auxiliary verb (be, have, will) with the right form of the verb (V1, -ing, V3). So for Turkish learners of English the real difficulty is not vocabulary but grasping the logic of these combinations.
Using tenses correctly goes far beyond finding the "right option" in an exam question: it determines the meaning of speech and writing. The difference between I lived in Ankara (I no longer live there) and I have lived in Ankara (I may still be there, or the experience is emphasised) is not just grammar but the very reality being conveyed. The wrong tense sends the wrong message even with the right words.
The healthiest way to think about the English tense system is through two simple questions. First, "When?" — is the event in the past, the present or the future? Second, "What aspect?" — is the event a completed whole (simple), flowing within a moment (continuous), finished by another point (perfect), or both ongoing up to a point and still felt (perfect continuous)? Three time axes multiplied by four aspects give the 12 tenses.
First decide when it happens (past/present/future), then choose how you see it (finished / flowing / completed / ongoing). These two decisions bring the right tense almost automatically.
The biggest difference between Turkish and English is that English encodes an event not only by "when" it happens but also by how the speaker frames it. While "okudum" is a single form in Turkish, in English that thought can be I read, I have read or I was reading depending on context. So when learning tenses you must translate not words but intention: "what exactly do I mean by this sentence?" This question will come up again and again throughout this guide and is the real key to finding the right tense.
Aşağıdaki tablo üç zaman eksenini (satırlar) dört görünümle (sütunlar) çaprazlayarak 12 zamanı tek bir haritada gösterir. Her hücrede aynı fiil (write) kullanıldı; böylece yalnızca yapının nasıl değiştiğine odaklanabilirsin.
| Simple | Continuous | Perfect | Perfect Continuous | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Geçmiş | I wrote | I was writing | I had written | I had been writing |
| Şimdi | I write | I am writing | I have written | I have been writing |
| Gelecek | I will write | I will be writing | I will have written | I will have been writing |
Dikkat edersen sütunlar hep aynı mantığı taşır: Simple sade fiildir; Continuous her zaman be + -ing; Perfect her zaman have + V3; Perfect Continuous her zaman have been + -ing. Değişen tek şey, yardımcı fiilin hangi zamana çekildiğidir (was/is/will be; had/have/will have). Yani 12 kalıbı ezberlemek yerine 4 görünüm mantığını öğrenip üç zamana uygularsın.
Görünüm sütununu bir kez kavrarsan, yeni bir zaman kurmak için yalnızca yardımcı fiili doğru zamana çekmen yeterlidir. Sistem, 12 ayrı kural değil, 3 × 4 bir çarpım tablosudur.
The table below crosses the three time axes (rows) with the four aspects (columns) to show the 12 tenses on a single map. The same verb (write) is used in every cell, so you can focus only on how the structure changes.
| Simple | Continuous | Perfect | Perfect Continuous | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Past | I wrote | I was writing | I had written | I had been writing |
| Present | I write | I am writing | I have written | I have been writing |
| Future | I will write | I will be writing | I will have written | I will have been writing |
Notice that the columns always carry the same logic: Simple is the bare verb; Continuous is always be + -ing; Perfect is always have + V3; Perfect Continuous is always have been + -ing. The only thing that changes is which tense the auxiliary is put into (was/is/will be; had/have/will have). So instead of memorising 12 patterns, you learn the 4 aspect logics and apply them to three times.
Once you grasp the aspect column, building a new tense only requires putting the auxiliary into the right time. The system is not 12 separate rules but a 3 × 4 multiplication table.
Present Simple; alışkanlıkları, rutinleri, genel gerçekleri ve tarifeye bağlı programları anlatır. Yapısı en sadesidir: fiilin birinci hâli (V1). Tek istisna üçüncü tekil şahıstır (he/she/it), orada fiil -s / -es alır. Olumsuz ve soruda yardımcı fiil do / does devreye girer ve asıl fiil yalın kalır.
| Biçim | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | özne + V1 (he/she/it + V-s) | She works from home. |
| Olumsuz | özne + don't/doesn't + V1 | She doesn't work on Sundays. |
| Soru | Do/Does + özne + V1? | Does she work here? |
Örnekler:
Water boils at 100°C. — Su 100°C'de kaynar. (genel gerçek)
I usually drink tea in the morning. — Sabahları genelde çay içerim. (alışkanlık)
The train leaves at 9 a.m. — Tren 9'da kalkar. (tarife)
He doesn't like coffee. — Kahve sevmez.
İşaret sözcükleri: always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day, on Mondays.
Üçüncü tekil şahısta -s'i unutmak (He work → He works) ve olumsuz/soruda hem does hem -s kullanmak (Does she works? → Does she work?) en yaygın iki hatadır.
The Present Simple expresses habits, routines, general truths and timetable-based schedules. Its structure is the simplest: the base form of the verb (V1). The only exception is the third person singular (he/she/it), where the verb takes -s / -es. In negatives and questions the auxiliary do / does steps in and the main verb stays bare.
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | subject + V1 (he/she/it + V-s) | She works from home. |
| Negative | subject + don't/doesn't + V1 | She doesn't work on Sundays. |
| Question | Do/Does + subject + V1? | Does she work here? |
Examples:
Water boils at 100°C. (general truth)
I usually drink tea in the morning. (habit)
The train leaves at 9 a.m. (timetable)
He doesn't like coffee.
Signal words: always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day, on Mondays.
Forgetting the -s in the third person singular (He work → He works) and using both does and -s in negatives/questions (Does she works? → Does she work?) are the two most common errors.
Present Continuous, tam şu anda olan, geçici ya da yakın gelecekte planlanmış eylemleri anlatır. Yapısı am/is/are + V-ing. Konuşma anındaki bir sahneyi (Look! Listen!) ya da bu ara devam eden bir durumu ifade eder.
| Biçim | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | am/is/are + V-ing | She is studying now. |
| Olumsuz | am/is/are + not + V-ing | She isn't studying now. |
| Soru | Am/Is/Are + özne + V-ing? | Is she studying? |
Örnekler:
Look! It's raining. — Bak! Yağmur yağıyor. (şu an)
They are moving house next month. — Önümüzdeki ay taşınıyorlar. (planlı gelecek)
I'm reading a great book these days. — Bu aralar harika bir kitap okuyorum. (geçici)
Why are you crying? — Neden ağlıyorsun?
İşaret sözcükleri: now, right now, at the moment, currently, today, Look!, Listen!.
Durum fiilleri (know, like, want, believe, understand, love) normalde -ing almaz: I am knowing → I know. Ayrıntı için Stative Verbs.
The Present Continuous expresses actions that are happening right now, temporary ones, or plans arranged for the near future. Its structure is am/is/are + V-ing. It captures a scene at the moment of speaking (Look! Listen!) or a situation ongoing these days.
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | am/is/are + V-ing | She is studying now. |
| Negative | am/is/are + not + V-ing | She isn't studying now. |
| Question | Am/Is/Are + subject + V-ing? | Is she studying? |
Examples:
Look! It's raining. (right now)
They are moving house next month. (arranged future)
I'm reading a great book these days. (temporary)
Why are you crying?
Signal words: now, right now, at the moment, currently, today, Look!, Listen!.
Stative verbs (know, like, want, believe, understand, love) normally do not take -ing: I am knowing → I know. For detail, see Stative Verbs.
Present Perfect, geçmişte olmuş ama şimdiyle bağı olan olayları anlatır: bir deneyim, henüz yeni biten bir eylem ya da sonucu şu an görülen bir durum. Yapısı have/has + V3 (fiilin üçüncü hâli). Bu zamanın kalbi zaman değil, ilişkidir: olayın tam ne zaman olduğu değil, bugüne etkisi önemlidir.
| Biçim | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | have/has + V3 | I have finished it. |
| Olumsuz | have/has + not + V3 | I haven't finished it. |
| Soru | Have/Has + özne + V3? | Have you finished it? |
Örnekler:
I have lost my keys. — Anahtarlarımı kaybettim (hâlâ bulamadım — sonuç şimdi).
She has been to Japan. — Japonya'ya gitmişliği var. (deneyim)
We have just arrived. — Az önce vardık. (yeni biten)
Have you ever eaten sushi? — Hiç suşi yedin mi?
İşaret sözcükleri: already, yet, just, ever, never, so far, recently, since, for.
Cümlede belirli bir bitmiş geçmiş an varsa (yesterday, in 2019, two hours ago) Present Perfect kullanılmaz; orada Past Simple gerekir. Present Perfect, geçmişi bugüne açık bırakan zamandır.
The Present Perfect expresses events that happened in the past but have a link to the present: an experience, an action that has just finished, or a situation whose result is visible now. Its structure is have/has + V3 (the third form of the verb). The heart of this tense is relationship, not time: what matters is not exactly when the event happened but its effect on today.
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | have/has + V3 | I have finished it. |
| Negative | have/has + not + V3 | I haven't finished it. |
| Question | Have/Has + subject + V3? | Have you finished it? |
Examples:
I have lost my keys. (still can't find them — result now)
She has been to Japan. (experience)
We have just arrived. (just finished)
Have you ever eaten sushi?
Signal words: already, yet, just, ever, never, so far, recently, since, for.
If the sentence has a specific finished past time (yesterday, in 2019, two hours ago), the Present Perfect is not used; the Past Simple is needed there. The Present Perfect is the tense that keeps the past open onto today.
Present Perfect Continuous, geçmişte başlayıp hâlâ süren (ya da yeni bitmiş) bir eylemin süresini vurgular. Yapısı have/has been + V-ing. Present Perfect "ne oldu / sonuç ne" derken, bu zaman "ne kadar zamandır sürüyor" der.
| Biçim | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | have/has been + V-ing | I have been waiting. |
| Olumsuz | have/has not been + V-ing | I haven't been waiting long. |
| Soru | Have/Has + özne + been + V-ing? | Have you been waiting? |
Örnekler:
We have been waiting for two hours. — İki saattir bekliyoruz. (süre)
She has been studying since morning. — Sabahtan beri çalışıyor.
It has been raining all day. — Bütün gün yağmur yağıyor.
Your eyes are red — have you been crying? — Gözlerin kızarmış — ağlıyor muydun?
İşaret sözcükleri: for, since, all day, all morning, how long, lately, recently.
I have read three books (sonuç/sayı) ≠ I have been reading all afternoon (süre/uğraş). Sonuç ve miktar Perfect'e, süreç ve süre Perfect Continuous'a gider.
The Present Perfect Continuous emphasises the duration of an action that started in the past and is still going on (or has just stopped). Its structure is have/has been + V-ing. Where the Present Perfect says "what happened / what's the result", this tense says "how long it has been going on".
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | have/has been + V-ing | I have been waiting. |
| Negative | have/has not been + V-ing | I haven't been waiting long. |
| Question | Have/Has + subject + been + V-ing? | Have you been waiting? |
Examples:
We have been waiting for two hours. (duration)
She has been studying since morning.
It has been raining all day.
Your eyes are red — have you been crying?
Signal words: for, since, all day, all morning, how long, lately, recently.
I have read three books (result/number) ≠ I have been reading all afternoon (duration/activity). Result and quantity go to the Perfect; process and duration go to the Perfect Continuous.
Past Simple, belirli bir geçmiş anda tamamlanmış olayı anlatır. Düzenli fiiller -ed alır (worked, played); düzensiz fiillerin ise ezberlenmesi gereken ikinci hâli (V2) vardır (go→went, write→wrote). Olumsuz ve soruda yardımcı fiil did gelir ve asıl fiil yalın hâline döner.
| Biçim | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | özne + V2 / V-ed | She graduated in 2020. |
| Olumsuz | özne + didn't + V1 | She didn't graduate in 2019. |
| Soru | Did + özne + V1? | Did she graduate? |
Örnekler:
I watched a film last night. — Dün gece film izledim.
They went to Paris in 2018. — 2018'de Paris'e gittiler.
He didn't call me yesterday. — Dün beni aramadı.
When did you arrive? — Ne zaman vardın?
İşaret sözcükleri: yesterday, ago, last night, last week, in 2015, when I was young.
Olumsuz ve soruda hem did hem V2 kullanmak yanlıştır: Did you went? → Did you go?. Düzensiz fiillerin V2/V3'ünü karıştırmamak için tabloyu düzenli tekrar et.
The Past Simple expresses an event completed at a specific past time. Regular verbs take -ed (worked, played); irregular verbs have a second form (V2) that must be memorised (go→went, write→wrote). In negatives and questions the auxiliary did appears and the main verb returns to its bare form.
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | subject + V2 / V-ed | She graduated in 2020. |
| Negative | subject + didn't + V1 | She didn't graduate in 2019. |
| Question | Did + subject + V1? | Did she graduate? |
Examples:
I watched a film last night.
They went to Paris in 2018.
He didn't call me yesterday.
When did you arrive?
Signal words: yesterday, ago, last night, last week, in 2015, when I was young.
Using both did and V2 in negatives and questions is wrong: Did you went? → Did you go?. Review the table regularly so you don't confuse the V2/V3 of irregular verbs.
Past Continuous, geçmişte belirli bir anda devam etmekte olan eylemi anlatır. Yapısı was/were + V-ing. Sık sık bir arka plan sahnesi kurar ve Past Simple ile ifade edilen ani bir olayla kesilir: uzun eylem continuous, kesen kısa olay simple.
| Biçim | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | was/were + V-ing | I was cooking. |
| Olumsuz | was/were + not + V-ing | I wasn't cooking. |
| Soru | Was/Were + özne + V-ing? | Were you cooking? |
Örnekler:
I was cooking when the phone rang. — Telefon çaldığında yemek yapıyordum.
At 8 p.m. we were watching TV. — Akşam 8'de televizyon izliyorduk.
While she was sleeping, I studied. — O uyurken ben çalıştım.
It was raining all morning. — Bütün sabah yağmur yağıyordu.
İşaret sözcükleri: while, as, when (kesen olay), at that moment, all evening.
When genelde kısa/kesen olayı (Past Simple), while genelde uzun/arka plan olayı (Past Continuous) getirir: While I was reading, the lights went out.
The Past Continuous expresses an action that was in progress at a specific moment in the past. Its structure is was/were + V-ing. It often sets a background scene and is interrupted by a sudden event expressed in the Past Simple: the long action is continuous, the short interrupting event is simple.
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | was/were + V-ing | I was cooking. |
| Negative | was/were + not + V-ing | I wasn't cooking. |
| Question | Was/Were + subject + V-ing? | Were you cooking? |
Examples:
I was cooking when the phone rang.
At 8 p.m. we were watching TV.
While she was sleeping, I studied.
It was raining all morning.
Signal words: while, as, when (interrupting event), at that moment, all evening.
When usually introduces the short/interrupting event (Past Simple), while usually introduces the long/background event (Past Continuous): While I was reading, the lights went out.
Past Perfect, geçmişteki başka bir olaydan önce tamamlanmış eylemi anlatır — yani "geçmişin geçmişi". Yapısı had + V3. İki geçmiş olayın hangisinin daha önce olduğunu netleştirmek için kullanılır: daha erken olan past perfect, sonraki past simple.
| Biçim | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | had + V3 | The train had left. |
| Olumsuz | had + not + V3 | The train hadn't left. |
| Soru | Had + özne + V3? | Had the train left? |
Örnekler:
The train had left before we arrived. — Biz varmadan önce tren kalkmıştı.
She had already eaten when I called. — Aradığımda çoktan yemişti.
I realised I had forgotten my passport. — Pasaportumu unuttuğumu fark ettim.
They had never seen snow before that trip. — O geziden önce hiç kar görmemişlerdi.
İşaret sözcükleri: before, after, already, by the time, when, until then.
Olaylar zaten sırayla anlatılıyorsa (önce–sonra) çoğu zaman Past Simple yeter. Past Perfect asıl olarak sıra tersten verildiğinde ya da öncelik net olsun istendiğinde parlar.
The Past Perfect expresses an action completed before another past event — the "past of the past". Its structure is had + V3. It is used to make clear which of two past events happened first: the earlier one is past perfect, the later one past simple.
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | had + V3 | The train had left. |
| Negative | had + not + V3 | The train hadn't left. |
| Question | Had + subject + V3? | Had the train left? |
Examples:
The train had left before we arrived.
She had already eaten when I called.
I realised I had forgotten my passport.
They had never seen snow before that trip.
Signal words: before, after, already, by the time, when, until then.
If events are already told in order (first–then), the Past Simple is often enough. The Past Perfect mainly shines when the order is given in reverse or when you want the sequence to be unmistakable.
Past Perfect Continuous, geçmişteki bir ana kadar bir süre boyunca devam etmiş eylemi anlatır ve süreyi vurgular. Yapısı had been + V-ing. Genellikle geçmişteki bir sonucun sebebini gösterir: bir şey neden öyleydi?
| Biçim | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | had been + V-ing | She had been working all day. |
| Olumsuz | had not been + V-ing | She hadn't been sleeping well. |
| Soru | Had + özne + been + V-ing? | Had you been waiting long? |
Örnekler:
She was tired because she had been working all day. — Bütün gün çalıştığı için yorgundu.
The ground was wet; it had been raining. — Yer ıslaktı; yağmur yağmıştı.
They had been driving for hours before they stopped. — Durmadan önce saatlerce araba sürmüşlerdi.
I had been studying English before I moved abroad. — Yurt dışına taşınmadan önce İngilizce çalışıyordum.
İşaret sözcükleri: for, since, before, all day, how long.
Bu zaman en çok "geçmişteki durumun arkasındaki uzun uğraş"ı göstermek için kullanılır. Sonucu Past Simple ile, sebebini Past Perfect Continuous ile verirsin.
The Past Perfect Continuous expresses an action that had been going on for a period up to a moment in the past, and it emphasises the duration. Its structure is had been + V-ing. It often shows the cause of a result in the past: why was something the way it was?
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | had been + V-ing | She had been working all day. |
| Negative | had not been + V-ing | She hadn't been sleeping well. |
| Question | Had + subject + been + V-ing? | Had you been waiting long? |
Examples:
She was tired because she had been working all day.
The ground was wet; it had been raining.
They had been driving for hours before they stopped.
I had been studying English before I moved abroad.
Signal words: for, since, before, all day, how long.
This tense is mostly used to show "the long activity behind a past situation". You give the result with the Past Simple and the cause with the Past Perfect Continuous.
Future Simple, will + V1 yapısıyla kurulur ve konuşma anında verilen kararları, tahminleri, sözleri ve teklifleri anlatır. will bütün özneler için aynıdır; olumsuzu won't (will not) olur.
| Biçim | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | will + V1 | I will call you tonight. |
| Olumsuz | won't + V1 | I won't be late. |
| Soru | Will + özne + V1? | Will you help me? |
Örnekler:
That bag looks heavy — I'll help you. — Çanta ağır görünüyor — yardım edeyim. (anlık karar)
I think it will rain tomorrow. — Sanırım yarın yağmur yağar. (tahmin)
I promise I will study harder. — Söz veriyorum, daha çok çalışacağım. (söz)
Will you marry me? — Benimle evlenir misin?
İşaret sözcükleri: tomorrow, soon, tonight, I think, probably, maybe, I promise.
Kararı şimdi, konuşurken veriyorsan will; kararı önceden vermişsen be going to. Bu ayrım için bir sonraki bölüme bak.
The Future Simple is built with will + V1 and expresses decisions made at the moment of speaking, predictions, promises and offers. will is the same for all subjects; its negative is won't (will not).
| Form | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Affirmative | will + V1 | I will call you tonight. |
| Negative | won't + V1 | I won't be late. |
| Question | Will + subject + V1? | Will you help me? |
Examples:
That bag looks heavy — I'll help you. (on-the-spot decision)
I think it will rain tomorrow. (prediction)
I promise I will study harder. (promise)
Will you marry me?
Signal words: tomorrow, soon, tonight, I think, probably, maybe, I promise.
If you make the decision now, as you speak, use will; if you decided beforehand, use be going to. See the next section for this distinction.
İngilizcede gelecek tek bir kalıpla sınırlı değildir; niyetine göre farklı yapılar seçilir. be going to + V1 önceden verilmiş plan ya da kanıta dayalı tahmin için kullanılır. Ayrıca Present Continuous ve Present Simple de gelecek anlatabilir.
| Kullanım | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Plan (going to) | am/is/are going to + V1 | We're going to paint the house. |
| Kanıtlı tahmin | am/is/are going to + V1 | Look at those clouds! It's going to rain. |
| Ayarlı randevu | Present Continuous | I'm meeting the dentist at four. |
| Resmî program | Present Simple | The train leaves at 9 a.m. |
Örnekler:
I'm going to start a new job next week. — Gelecek hafta yeni bir işe başlayacağım. (plan)
She's flying to Rome on Friday. — Cuma Roma'ya uçuyor. (ayarlanmış)
The film starts at 8. — Film 8'de başlar. (program)
Kararı şimdi mi veriyorsun (→ will), zaten mı vermiştin (→ be going to), yoksa bir kişiyle ayarlanmış bir randevu mu var (→ Present Continuous)? Bir tarifeye bağlıysa Present Simple. Ayrıntı için Future Forms.
In English the future is not limited to one pattern; different structures are chosen according to intention. be going to + V1 is used for a plan made in advance or an evidence-based prediction. The Present Continuous and Present Simple can also express the future.
| Use | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Plan (going to) | am/is/are going to + V1 | We're going to paint the house. |
| Evidence prediction | am/is/are going to + V1 | Look at those clouds! It's going to rain. |
| Arranged appointment | Present Continuous | I'm meeting the dentist at four. |
| Official timetable | Present Simple | The train leaves at 9 a.m. |
Examples:
I'm going to start a new job next week. (plan)
She's flying to Rome on Friday. (arranged)
The film starts at 8. (timetable)
Are you deciding now (→ will), had you already decided (→ be going to), or is there an arranged appointment with a person (→ Present Continuous)? If it depends on a timetable, Present Simple. For detail, see Future Forms.
Future Continuous, gelecekte belirli bir anda devam ediyor olacak eylemi anlatır. Yapısı will be + V-ing. Gelecekteki bir sahneyi "o an içinde akarken" resmeder ve çoğu zaman kibar, varsayılan bir gelecek anlatımı için de kullanılır.
| Biçim | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Olumlu | will be + V-ing | I will be flying to London. |
| Olumsuz | won't be + V-ing | I won't be working tomorrow. |
| Soru | Will + özne + be + V-ing? | Will you be using the car? |
Örnekler:
This time tomorrow, I will be flying to London. — Yarın bu saatte Londra'ya uçuyor olacağım.
Don't call at 8 — we'll be having dinner. — 8'de arama — yemek yiyor olacağız.
She will be waiting for you at the station. — İstasyonda seni bekliyor olacak.
İşaret sözcükleri: this time tomorrow, at 8 o'clock, all day tomorrow, in the future.
Future Continuous, bir planı sormanın kibar yoludur: Will you be joining us? — niyeti nazikçe öğrenir, doğrudan istekten daha yumuşaktır.
The Future Continuous expresses an action that will be in progress at a specific moment in the future. Its structure is will be + V-ing. It pictures a future scene "flowing within that moment" and is often also used for a polite, assumed statement about the future.
| Form | Structure | Example |

| Affirmative | will be + V-ing | I will be flying to London. |
| Negative | won't be + V-ing | I won't be working tomorrow. |
| Question | Will + subject + be + V-ing? | Will you be using the car? |
Examples:
This time tomorrow, I will be flying to London.
Don't call at 8 — we'll be having dinner.
She will be waiting for you at the station.
Signal words: this time tomorrow, at 8 o'clock, all day tomorrow, in the future.
The Future Continuous is a polite way to ask about a plan: Will you be joining us? — it gently checks intention and is softer than a direct request.
Future Perfect, gelecekte belirli bir ana kadar tamamlanmış olacak eylemi anlatır. Yapısı will have + V3. Genellikle by + zaman (by 2030, by then) ile gelir. Future Perfect Continuous ise gelecekte bir ana kadar bir süre sürmüş olacak eylemin süresini vurgular: will have been + V-ing.
| Zaman | Yapı | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Future Perfect | will have + V3 | By 2030 she will have graduated. |
| Olumsuz | won't have + V3 | We won't have finished by noon. |
| Future Perfect Cont. | will have been + V-ing | I will have been teaching for a decade. |
Örnekler:
By the time you arrive, I will have cooked dinner. — Sen gelene kadar yemeği yapmış olacağım.
By 2030, she will have graduated. — 2030'a kadar mezun olmuş olacak.
Next year, I will have been living here for ten years. — Gelecek yıl on yıldır burada yaşıyor olacağım.
İşaret sözcükleri: by, by then, by 2030, by the time, in two years, for (süre).
Future Perfect, iki gelecek an arasında bir bitiş sırası kurulacağı zaman gerekir: bir olay, başka bir gelecek noktadan önce tamamlanmış olacaktır. Bu iki zaman ileri düzey konuşma ve yazıda incelik katar; ayrıntı için Future Continuous & Perfect.
The Future Perfect expresses an action that will have been completed by a specific moment in the future. Its structure is will have + V3. It usually comes with by + time (by 2030, by then). The Future Perfect Continuous emphasises the duration of an action that will have been going on for a period up to a future moment: will have been + V-ing.
| Tense | Structure | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Future Perfect | will have + V3 | By 2030 she will have graduated. |
| Negative | won't have + V3 | We won't have finished by noon. |
| Future Perfect Cont. | will have been + V-ing | I will have been teaching for a decade. |
Examples:
By the time you arrive, I will have cooked dinner.
By 2030, she will have graduated.
Next year, I will have been living here for ten years.
Signal words: by, by then, by 2030, by the time, in two years, for (duration).
The Future Perfect is needed when a sequence of completion is set up between two future moments: an event will have finished before another future point. These two tenses add nuance to advanced speech and writing; for detail, see Future Continuous & Perfect.
I read the book. — kitabı okudum, bitti.
Olayı ortasından, akarken yakalar. I was reading the book. — o anda okuma hâlindeydim.
İki zaman noktasını birbirine bağlar; bir ana kadar tamamlanmayı gösterir. I had read it before the exam.
Bu bağa bir de süre vurgusu ekler. I had been reading for hours.
Bu dört mercekten hangisini taktığın, cümlenin anlamını doğrudan değiştirir. Bir zamanı kurmadan önce kendine sor: olayı bitmiş bir bütün olarak mı, akarken mi, bir noktaya kadar tamamlanmış olarak mı, yoksa süregelen bir uğraş olarak mı görüyorum? Cevabın, dört sütundan birini seçer.
Görünümün gücünü tek bir fiil üzerinden görmek çok öğreticidir. live fiilini düşün: I live in Izmir kalıcı bir gerçektir; I am living in Izmir geçici bir düzenlemeyi ima eder (belki birkaç aylığına); I have lived in Izmir for ten years geçmişten bugüne uzanan bir süreyi anlatır; I have been living in Izmir ise aynı süreyi "hâlâ devam eden uğraş" tonuyla verir. Tek bir fiil, dört görünümle dört farklı gerçeklik çizer — işte İngilizce zamanların asıl inceliği buradadır.
Ana cümle geçmişe kayınca, ona bağlı cümle de genelde bir adım geriye kayar — özellikle dolaylı anlatımda. "I am tired," she said → She said she was tired. Aynı mantıkla will → would, have done → had done olur. Bu "backshift", koşul cümlelerindeki mantığın da temelidir.
Most learners quickly grasp the past/present/future distinction; the real confusion is in the aspect layer. Aspect is the "shape" of an event in time: it determines whether we see it as a single point, a flowing line, or an area completed up to a point. The same real event gives a completely different message depending on which aspect you choose.
Presents the event as a whole, a closed package. I read the book. — I read it, done.
Catches the event from the middle, as it flows. I was reading the book. — I was in the act of reading.
Links two time points; shows completion up to a moment. I had read it before the exam.
Adds a duration emphasis to that link. I had been reading for hours.
Which of these four lenses you put on directly changes the meaning of the sentence. Before building a tense, ask yourself: do I see the event as a finished whole, as it flows, as completed up to a point, or as an ongoing activity? Your answer picks one of the four columns.
Seeing the power of aspect through a single verb is very instructive. Take the verb live: I live in Izmir is a permanent fact; I am living in Izmir implies a temporary arrangement (perhaps for a few months); I have lived in Izmir for ten years describes a duration reaching from the past to today; and I have been living in Izmir gives the same duration with the tone of a "still ongoing activity". A single verb draws four different realities through four aspects — this is exactly where the real subtlety of English tenses lies.
When the main clause shifts to the past, the clause tied to it usually shifts one step back too — especially in reported speech. "I am tired," she said → She said she was tired. By the same logic will → would, have done → had done. This "backshift" is also the basis of the logic in conditional sentences.
Aşağıdaki dört çift, sınavlarda ve konuşmada en çok karıştırılan noktalardır. Bu hataların çoğu Türkçenin İngilizceye doğrudan çevrilmesinden doğar; bu yüzden her birini bir zıt örnekle öğrenmek, kuralı ezberlemekten çok daha kalıcıdır.
Türkçede "-dı/-di" eki hem I did hem I have done için kullanıldığından iki zaman karışır. Belirli bir geçmiş an varsa Past Simple, sonuç bugüne bağlıysa Present Perfect: I lost my keys yesterday (bitmiş an) ≠ I have lost my keys (hâlâ bulamadım).
Genel gerçek ve alışkanlık Present Simple ister; şu an olan geçici eylem Present Continuous. I am going to school every day → I go to school every day. Ayrıca durum fiilleri -ing almaz: I am wanting → I want.
used to artık geçerli olmayan geçmiş alışkanlık/durum için: I used to smoke (artık içmiyorum). would yalnızca tekrarlı geçmiş eylemleri anlatır (durumları değil): Every summer we would go to the coast. Tek seferlik olayda ikisi de olmaz; Past Simple gelir.
since bir başlangıç noktası ister (since 2010, since Monday); for bir süre ister (for three years, for an hour). İkisi de Present Perfect ve Present Perfect Continuous ile çok sık kullanılır.
The four pairs below are the points most often confused in exams and speech. Most of these errors come from translating Turkish directly into English; so learning each with a contrasting example lasts far longer than memorising the rule.
Because the Turkish suffix "-dı/-di" is used for both I did and I have done, the two tenses get confused. If there is a specific past time, use the Past Simple; if the result is tied to today, use the Present Perfect: I lost my keys yesterday (finished moment) ≠ I have lost my keys (still can't find them).
A general truth and a habit need the Present Simple; a temporary action happening now needs the Present Continuous. I am going to school every day → I go to school every day. Also, stative verbs do not take -ing: I am wanting → I want.
used to is for a past habit/state that is no longer true: I used to smoke (I no longer do). would only describes repeated past actions (not states): Every summer we would go to the coast. For a one-off event, neither works; use the Past Simple.
since needs a starting point (since 2010, since Monday); for needs a duration (for three years, for an hour). Both are very often used with the Present Perfect and Present Perfect Continuous.
Doğru zamanı seçmenin en pratik yolu, cümledeki zaman belirteçlerini okumaktır. Sınavlarda bu ipuçları çoğu zaman doğru cevabı ele verir. Aşağıdaki tablo, en güvenilir işaret sözcüklerini zamanlarla eşleştirir.
| Zaman | Sık işaret sözcükleri |
|---|---|
| Present Simple | always, usually, often, sometimes, never, every day, on Mondays |
| Present Continuous | now, right now, at the moment, currently, Look!, Listen! |
| Present Perfect | already, yet, just, ever, never, so far, recently, since, for |
| Present Perfect Cont. | for, since, all day, how long, lately |
| Past Simple | yesterday, ago, last night, in 2015, when |
| Past Continuous | while, as, when, at that moment, all evening |
| Past Perfect | before, after, already, by the time, until then |
| Future (will / going to) | tomorrow, next week, soon, in a while, I think, probably |
| Future Perfect | by, by then, by 2030, by the time, in two years |
İşaret sözcükleri güçlü bir ipucudur, ama tek başına yeterli değildir. Aynı sözcük (when) farklı zamanlarda kullanılabilir; asıl karar, cümlenin anlamına göre verilir. İpucunu al, ama son sözü mantığa bırak.
The most practical way to choose the right tense is to read the time markers in the sentence. In exams these clues often give away the correct answer. The table below matches the most reliable signal words to their tenses.
| Tense | Common signal words |
| Future Perfect | by, by then, by 2030, by the time, in two years |
Signal words are a strong clue, but not enough on their own. The same word (when) can be used with different tenses; the real decision is made by the meaning of the sentence. Take the clue, but leave the last word to logic.
Bir cümle kurarken doğru zamanı bulmak için üç adımlı basit bir karar akışı işini görür. Bu akışı birkaç kez bilinçli uygularsan, zamanla refleks hâline gelir.
| Adım | Soru | Sonuç |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Zaman ekseni | Olay geçmişte mi, şimdide mi, gelecekte mi? | Satırı seçer (past / present / future) |
| 2. Görünüm | Bitmiş bütün mü, akan mı, tamamlanmış mı, süregelen mi? | Sütunu seçer (simple / continuous / perfect / perfect cont.) |
| 3. Doğrulama | İşaret sözcüğü ve anlam uyuyor mu? | Seçimi onaylar ya da düzeltir |
Örnek karar: "İki saattir seni bekliyorum." — Şimdi mi? Evet (hâlâ bekliyorum) → present. Süre vurgusu var mı? Evet (for two hours) → perfect continuous. Sonuç: I have been waiting for you for two hours.
İkinci bir örnek, adımların birbirini nasıl düzelttiğini gösterir: "Dün akşam sen aradığında ben duş alıyordum." — Zaman ekseni geçmiş. İki olay var: biri kısa ve kesen (aramak), diğeri uzun ve arka planda (duş almak). Kesen olay Past Simple, arka plan Past Continuous olur: I was taking a shower when you called last night. İşaret sözcüğü (when) ve anlam bu seçimi doğrular. Gördüğün gibi doğru zaman, tek bir kuraldan değil, üç adımın birlikte çalışmasından çıkar.
To find the right tense when forming a sentence, a simple three-step decision flow does the job. If you apply this flow consciously a few times, it becomes a reflex over time.
| Step | Question | Result |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Time axis | Is the event in the past, present or future? | Picks the row (past / present / future) |
| 2. Aspect | Finished whole, flowing, completed, or ongoing? | Picks the column (simple / continuous / perfect / perfect cont.) |
| 3. Verification | Do the signal word and the meaning agree? | Confirms or corrects the choice |
A worked decision: "I have been waiting for you for two hours." — Present? Yes (I'm still waiting) → present. Is there a duration emphasis? Yes (for two hours) → perfect continuous. Result: I have been waiting for you for two hours.
A second example shows how the steps correct one another: "I was taking a shower when you called last night." — The time axis is past. There are two events: one short and interrupting (calling), the other long and in the background (showering). The interrupting event becomes Past Simple, the background Past Continuous: I was taking a shower when you called last night. The signal word (when) and the meaning confirm this choice. As you can see, the right tense comes not from a single rule but from the three steps working together.
V1–V2–V3 üçlüsünü birlikte söyle: see–saw–seen.
Aynı cümleyi iki zamanda kur, farkı hisset: I read / I have read / I was reading.
The most productive way is to learn the tenses not as a list to memorise but as an interconnected system. The method below works for most learners.
Understand "is it simple, continuous or perfect?" independently of the three times; then multiply it by past/present/future. This way you solve 12 patterns with 4 logics.
Put every sentence on paper as an arrow: where does the event start, where does it end, which point are we looking from? Visualising is very powerful for the Perfect tenses.
Five verbs a day, said aloud. Say the V1–V2–V3 triple together: see–saw–seen.
Build the same sentence in two tenses and feel the difference: I read / I have read / I was reading.
Reading rules is not enough; practise until you recognise each tense in context and get feedback.
Write three real sentences of your own for each tense. Personal examples last longer than rote memory and become a reflex in speech.
Remember: to say you "know" a tense is not to recognise it in a table but to produce it right the first time in the right context. After learning each new tense, compare it with the previous one, show the difference in one sentence, then reinforce it with practice questions. As you progress, the 12 tenses stop being a pile of separate rules and turn into one coherent system.
