Bir doktorun "This may be an allergic reaction" (Bu alerjik bir tepki olabilir) demesi, kesin teşhis koymadan olasılığı masaya koymasıdır.
Neden bu yapı var?
Çünkü dünya hakkında sürekli tahmin yürütürüz ama kanıtımız yetersizdir. "Kesinlikle olacak" (will) ile "asla olmaz" arasında kocaman bir gri alan vardır. May/might/could bu gri alanın dilidir.
Türk öğrenci için neden zor?
- Türkçede tek ek ("-ebilir") hem yetenek hem ihtimal hem izin anlatır; İngilizce bunları ayırır (yetenek için bkz. Yeterlilik (can / could / be able to)).
- Üç modal (may/might/could) Türkçede çoğu zaman aynı "-ebilir" ile çevrilir, oysa aralarında ince ihtimal farkı vardır.
- Modaldan sonra fiil daima yalın kalır; Türk öğrenci refleksle "to" veya "-s" ekler.
- Geçmiş ihtimal ("gelmiş olabilir") için ayrı kalıp gerekir: may have + V3.
Most of life is not certain. Something may or may not happen. This is exactly where may, might and could exist to express this uncertainty: they state the probability of an event happening . The speaker is not sure; they only say 'this is possible'.
In Turkish we do this in two ways: to the verb we add -ebilir/-abilir ("yağmur yağabilir"), or at the start we put belki ("belki gelir"). English does this with a separate word, a modal auxiliary. So what is a single suffix in Turkish is an independent word before the verb in English.
These three modals actually work like a scale of confidence . The speaker does not want to say 'I'm 100% sure'; they say 'there's a chance, but I can't guarantee it'. That is why they appear constantly in the news, weather forecasts, medicine, law and academic writing: these are all areas where we cannot speak with certainty . A doctor saying "This may be an allergic reaction" puts the possibility on the table without making a definite diagnosis.
Why does this structure exist?
Because we constantly make guesses about the world, but our evidence is insufficient. Between "it will definitely happen" (will) and "it will never happen" there is a huge grey area. May/might/could is the language of that grey area.
Why is it hard for Turkish learners?
- In Turkish one suffix ("-ebilir") expresses both ability , possibility , and permission ; English separates these (for ability, see Ability (can / could / be able to)).
- The three modals (may/might/could) are usually translated with the same "-ebilir" in Turkish, yet there is a subtle probability difference among them.
- After a modal the verb always stays bare; Turkish learners reflexively add "to" or "-s".
- Past possibility ("gelmiş olabilir") needs a separate pattern: may have + V3.
- may / might / could = bir şeyin mümkün / ihtimal dahilinde olduğunu söyler (kesin değil).
- Kalıp: özne + may/might/could + fiilin yalın hali. Örn: It may rain.
- Modaldan sonra fiile -s, -ed, to eklenmez: She may go (❌ goes / to go).
- Üçü de hem şimdi hem gelecek ihtimali anlatır; ayrı gelecek eki yoktur, zamanı bağlam verir.
- İhtimal derecesi (kabaca): could ≈ might (biraz daha ihtiyatlı) < may (biraz daha ölçülü/resmi) — ama fark inceliktir, mutlak değildir.
- Olumsuz: may not / might not = "olmayabilir". couldn't ise ihtimal için pek kullanılmaz (anlamı değişir).
- Geçmiş ihtimal: may/might/could + have + V3. Örn: He may have left. (Gitmiş olabilir.)
- Süregelen ihtimal: may/might/could + be + V-ing. Örn: She might be working. (Çalışıyor olabilir.)
- could aynı zamanda nazik öneri/seçenek sunabilir: We could go by train. (Trenle gidebiliriz.)
- İhtimal ile çıkarım/kesin tahmin (Çıkarım (must / can't / might)) farklıdır: "olabilir" (may) vs "olmalı/kesin" (must).
- may / might / could = say that something is possible / within the realm of probability (not certain).
- Pattern: subject + may/might/could + the bare form of the verb. E.g.: It may rain.
- After a modal, the verb takes no -s, -ed, to added: She may go (❌ goes / to go).
- All three express both present , and future possibility; there is no separate future marker, context gives the time.
- Probability degree (roughly): could ≈ might (a little more cautious) < may (a little more measured/formal) — but the difference is subtle, not absolute.
- Negative: may not / might not = "might not be". couldn't is rarely used for possibility (its meaning changes).
- Past possibility: may/might/could + have + V3. E.g.: He may have left. (He may have left.)
- Ongoing possibility: may/might/could + be + V-ing. E.g.: She might be working. (She might be working.)
- could can also offer a polite suggestion/option : We could go by train. (We could go by train.)
- Possibility differs from deduction/certain guess ( (Deduction (must / can't / might)): "may be" (may) vs "must be / certain" (must).
Olumlu (Affirmative)
Kalıp çok basit: özne + may/might/could + fiilin yalın hali. Modal hiçbir özneye göre değişmez (I, he, they — hepsi aynı), fiil de yalın kalır.
özne + may / might / could + yalın fiil. Modal özneye göre değişmez, fiil -s almaz.
Olumsuz (Negative)
Olumsuzda modaldan sonra not gelir: may not, might not (kısaltması mightn't, günümüzde nadir). Dikkat: may not bağlama göre "olmayabilir" (ihtimal) ya da "yasak" (izin) demek olabilir; bu bölümde ihtimal anlamıyla ilgileniyoruz. could not / couldn't ise ihtimalde "olamaz / imkânsız" anlamına kayar, "olmayabilir" demez.
may not / might not = "olmayabilir"; ama couldn't ihtimalde "olamaz / imkânsız" demektir.
Soru (Interrogative)
Olasılık modalları soru başında pek kullanılmaz. "Might I...?" çok resmi/eski izin sorusudur, ihtimal sorusu değil. İhtimali sormak için genelde Do you think ... might/could ...? ya da Is it possible that ...? kalıbı tercih edilir.
| Soru | Doğal cevap | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|
| Do you think she'll come? | She might. | Gelebilir. (belki) |
| Will it rain? | It could. | Yağabilir. |
| Is he coming? | He may, he may not. | Gelebilir de, gelmeyebilir de. |
Affirmative
The pattern is very simple: subject + may/might/could + the bare form of the verb. The modal does not change for any subject (I, he, they — all the same), and the verb stays bare.
subject + may / might / could + bare verb. The modal does not change for the subject; the verb takes no -s ending.
Negative
In the negative, after the modal comes not : may not, might not (its contraction mightn't, rare today). Note: may not depending on context can mean "might not be" (possibility) or "not allowed" (permission); in this section we deal with the possibility meaning. could not / couldn't in possibility shifts to the meaning "cannot be / impossible"; it does not mean "might not be".
may not / might not = "might not be"; but couldn't in possibility means "cannot be / impossible".
Interrogative
Possibility modals are rarely used at the start of a question. "Might I...?" is a very formal/old permission question, not a possibility question. To ask about possibility, usually the Do you think ... might/could ...? or Is it possible that ...? pattern is preferred.
| Question | Natural answer | Turkish |
|---|---|---|
| Do you think she'll come? | She might. | Gelebilir. (belki) |
| Will it rain? | It could. | Yağabilir. |
| Is he coming? | He may, he may not. | Gelebilir de, gelmeyebilir de. |
1) Şimdiki durum hakkında ihtimal
Şu an neyin doğru olabileceğini tahmin ederiz. Kanıt yetersizdir, konuşmacı ihtimal sunar.
2) Gelecekle ilgili ihtimal
Kesin olmayan gelecek olaylar için en yaygın kullanımdır. Plan değil, sadece olasılıktır (kesin plan için Gelecek (will / going to)).
3) Geçmişteki bir olay hakkında ihtimal
Geçmişte ne olmuş olabileceğini tahmin ederiz: may/might/could have + V3.
4) Süregelen bir eylem hakkında ihtimal
Şu an devam eden bir eylemi tahmin ederiz: may/might/could be + V-ing.
5) Nazik öneri ve seçenek (özellikle could)
could ihtimalin yanı sıra bir olasılık olarak seçenek sunar: "şunu da yapabiliriz". Bu, emir değil, kibar bir öneridir.
1) Possibility about a present situation
We guess what might be true right now. The evidence is insufficient; the speaker offers a possibility.
2) Possibility about the future
This is the most common use for uncertain future events. It is not a plan, just a possibility (for a definite plan, see The future (will / going to)).
3) Possibility about a past event
We guess what might have happened in the past: may/might/could have + V3.
4) Possibility about an ongoing action
We guess about an action happening right now: may/might/could be + V-ing.
5) Polite suggestion and option (especially could)
could besides possibility, offers an option as a possibility : "we could also do this". This is not a command but a polite suggestion.
Olasılık modallarının kendine ait sabit bir zaman zarfı yoktur; zamanı bağlam ve zaman ifadeleri belirler. Ancak bazı kelimeler bir cümlede ihtimal havasını güçlendirir.
| İfade | İşlev | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| maybe / perhaps | Belki (ihtimali pekiştirir) | Maybe she may join us. (genelde ikisi birlikte gereksiz — birini seç) |
| possibly | muhtemelen / olası | It could possibly be delayed. |
| tonight, tomorrow, next week | gelecek zamanı belirler | It might rain tomorrow. |
| by now, already | geçmiş ihtimalle | They may have arrived by now. |
| for all I know | bildiğim kadarıyla (belirsizlik) | She might have left, for all I know. |
Possibility modals have no fixed time adverb of their own; the time is set by context and time expressions . However, some words strengthen the sense of possibility in a sentence.
| Expression | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| maybe / perhaps | Perhaps (reinforces the possibility) | Maybe she may join us. (usually the two together are redundant — pick one) |
| possibly | possibly / likely | It could possibly be delayed. |
| tonight, tomorrow, next week | sets the future time | It might rain tomorrow. |
| by now, already | with past possibility | They may have arrived by now. |
| for all I know | as far as I know (uncertainty) | She might have left, for all I know. |
Üç modal Türkçeye çoğu zaman aynı "-ebilir" ile çevrilse de aralarında gerçek farklar vardır. Bunlar mutlak kural değil, eğilim ve register (resmiyet düzeyi) farkıdır.
Kesinlik derecesi
Kabaca: could/might biraz daha temkinli ve zayıf ihtimal verirken, may biraz daha ölçülü ve resmî durur. Ama bu fark çok incedir; günlük konuşmada üçü büyük ölçüde değiştirilebilir.
Bakış açısı ve nezaket
might/could konuşmacıyı daha az iddialı gösterir; bu yüzden nazik uyarı ve öneride tercih edilir. may ise resmi duyurularda, akademik yazıda öne çıkar.
Although the three modals are usually translated into Turkish with the same "-ebilir", there are real differences among them. These are not absolute rules but a difference of tendency and register (level of formality).
Degree of certainty
Roughly: could/might give a slightly more cautious, weaker possibility, while may is a little more measured and formal. But this difference is very subtle; in everyday speech the three are largely interchangeable.
Point of view and politeness
might/could make the speaker seem less assertive; that is why they are preferred for polite warnings and suggestions . may stands out in formal announcements and academic writing.
Türkçe olasılığı iki yolla kurar: (1) fiile -ebilir/-abilir eki ("gel-ebilir"), (2) başa belki zarfı ("belki gelir"). İngilizce ise fiilden önce ayrı bir modal kelime (may/might/could) koyar ve fiili yalın bırakır.
- Türkçe "-ebilir" hem ihtimal hem yetenek hem izin demektir; İngilizce bunları ayrı modallarla ayırır (yetenek: can/be able to — bkz. Yeterlilik (can / could / be able to)).
- Türkçede olasılık eki fiile yapışır; İngilizcede modal ayrı yazılır ve fiili çekmez.
- Türkçe "belki" tek başına yeterken, İngilizcede "maybe" + modal birlikte kullanmak çoğu zaman gereksizdir.
- Türkçe "gelmiş olabilir" bileşik yapısı, İngilizcede tam olarak may have come kalıbına denk gelir — birebir eşleşen ender kalıplardan biridir.
Turkish forms possibility in two ways: (1) the -ebilir/-abilir suffix on the verb ("gel-ebilir"), (2) the belki adverb at the start ("belki gelir"). English, by contrast, puts a separate modal word (may/might/could) before the verb and leaves the verb bare.
- Turkish "-ebilir" means both possibility , ability , and permission ; English separates these with different modals (ability: can/be able to — see Ability (can / could / be able to)).
- In Turkish the possibility suffix attaches to the verb; in English the modal is written separately and does not conjugate the verb.
- While Turkish "belki" is enough on its own, in English using "maybe" + a modal together is usually redundant.
- The Turkish compound "gelmiş olabilir" corresponds exactly to the English may have come pattern — one of the rare patterns that match one-to-one.
Olasılık modalları, anlamca yakın birkaç yapıyla karıştırılır. Aşağıdaki tablo farkı netleştirir.
Bu yapıların hepsi "gelecek/şimdi hakkında bir şey söylemek" işini görür, ama kesinlik derecesi ve niyet bakımından ayrışırlar. Olasılık modalları kanıtın zayıf olduğunu, konuşmacının ihtiyatlı durduğunu gösterir. Çıkarım modalları (Çıkarım (must / can't / might)) tersine güçlü kanıttan yola çıkıp "kesin öyle / kesin değil" der. Gelecek zaman yapıları (Gelecek (will / going to)) ise ihtimal değil öngörü ya da karar bildirir. Koşul cümleleri (Koşul: Type 2) gerçek bir olasılığı değil, hayali bir kurguyu anlatır. Yani aynı Türkçe "-ebilir" birçok İngilizce yapıya dağılır; doğru olanı seçmek için önce "ne kadar eminim?" diye sor.
| Yapı | Anlamı | Örnek | Fark |
|---|---|---|---|
| may / might / could | ihtimal (belki olur) | It may be true. | Kanıt zayıf; sadece olasılık. |
| must / can't (Çıkarım (must / can't / might)) | mantıklı çıkarım (kesine yakın) | It must be true. | Kanıt güçlü; "kesin öyle" der. |
| will / be going to (Gelecek (will / going to)) | kesin/planlı gelecek | It will rain. | İhtimal değil, öngörü/karar. |
| can (yetenek) (Yeterlilik (can / could / be able to)) | yeterlilik/genel imkân | She can swim. | Kişisel beceri; anlık ihtimal değil. |
| if-clause 2 (Koşul: Type 2) | hayali/varsayımsal koşul | If it rained, we'd stay. | Gerçek ihtimal değil, kurgu. |
Possibility modals are confused with several structures close in meaning. The table below clarifies the difference.
All these structures do the job of "saying something about the future/present", but they differ in terms of degree of certainty and intention . Possibility modals show that the evidence is weak and the speaker is being cautious. Deduction modals (Deduction (must / can't / might)) on the contrary start from strong evidence and say "it's definitely so / definitely not". Future-tense structures (The future (will / going to)) state not possibility but a forecast or decision. Conditional clauses (Conditional: Type 2) describe not a real possibility but an imaginary scenario. So the same Turkish "-ebilir" spreads across many English structures; to choose the right one, first ask "how sure am I?"
| Structure | Meaning | Example | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| may / might / could | possibility (it may happen) | It may be true. | Weak evidence; only a possibility. |
| must / can't (Deduction (must / can't / might)) | logical deduction (close to certain) | It must be true. | Strong evidence; says "it's definitely so". |
| will / be going to (The future (will / going to)) | definite/planned future | It will rain. | Not possibility, but a forecast/decision. |
| can (yetenek) (Ability (can / could / be able to)) | capability/general possibility | She can swim. | A personal skill; not an immediate possibility. |
| if-clause 2 (Conditional: Type 2) | an imaginary/hypothetical condition | If it rained, we'd stay. | Not a real possibility, but a scenario. |
Olasılık modallarının birkaç özel davranışı vardır; bunları bilmek C1 düzeyinde fark yaratır.
- could olumsuzu (couldn't) ihtimalde "olmayabilir" DEMEZ; "olması imkânsız" der. "Olmayabilir" için might not / may not kullanılır.
- might, may'in geçmiş biçimi DEĞİLDİR (tarihsel köken hariç); bugün ikisi de şimdi/gelecek ihtimali anlatır. Geçmiş için ikisi de have + V3 alır.
- may/might well kalıbı ihtimali güçlendirir: She may well be right. (Pekâlâ haklı olabilir.)
- might have + V3 bazen gerçekleşmemiş bir olasılığı (sitem/pişmanlık) anlatabilir: You might have told me! (Bana söyleyebilirdin ama söylemedin!)
İstisna 1: couldn't ihtimalde "olamaz" demektir
Olumlu could düzgün bir ihtimal modalidir ("olabilir"), ama olumsuzu couldn't aynı çizgide gitmez: ihtimali azaltmak yerine kapıyı tümüyle kapatır ve "bu olması imkânsız" anlamına kayar. Bu yüzden "olma ihtimali düşük" demek istediğinde might not / may not kullanmalısın. Türk öğrenci "olmayabilir" derken refleksle couldn't seçince cümlenin anlamı sessizce tersine döner — bu, fark edilmesi zor ama pahalı bir hatadır.
İstisna 2: might have + V3 bazen sitem/pişmanlık taşır
Normalde might have + V3 geçmiş bir olasılığı anlatır ("gitmiş olabilir"). Ama tonlama ve bağlamla birlikte, gerçekleşmemiş bir şeye yönelik sitem ya da pişmanlık anlamı doğar: You might have told me! Burada "söyleyebilirdin ama söylemedin" vardır; artık ihtimal değil, kırgınlık ifadesidir. Bu ikili anlam yazıda kaybolur, konuşmada vurgu ayırır.
Possibility modals have a few special behaviours; knowing them makes a difference at C1 level.
- could The negative form (couldn't) in possibility does NOT mean "might not be"; it means "impossible". For "might not be", might not / may not is used.
- might, mayis NOT the past form of it (apart from the historical origin); today both express present/future possibility. For the past, both take have + V3 .
- may/might well pattern strengthens the possibility: She may well be right. (She may well be right.)
- might have + V3 can sometimes express an unrealised possibility (reproach/regret): You might have told me! (You could have told me, but you didn't!)
Exception 1: couldn't in possibility means "cannot be"
In the affirmative, could is a proper possibility modal ("may be"), but its negative couldn't does not follow the same line: instead of lowering the possibility, it closes the door entirely and shifts to "this is impossible". So when you want to say "low chance of being", you should use might not / may not . When Turkish learners say "might not be", if they reflexively choose couldn't , the sentence's meaning silently flips — a hard-to-notice but costly mistake.
Exception 2: might have + V3 sometimes carries reproach/regret
Normally, might have + V3 expresses a past possibility ("gitmiş olabilir"). But with intonation and context, a meaning of reproach or or regret toward something unrealised arises: You might have told me! Here there is "you could have told me but you didn't"; it is no longer a possibility but an expression of hurt. This double meaning is lost in writing; in speech, stress separates them.
Akademik yazıda olasılık modalları ihtiyatlı ifade (hedging) için vazgeçilmezdir. Yazar iddiasını yumuşatır, kesin konuşmaktan kaçınır. Bu bağlamda may özellikle yaygındır; might/could de görülür. Günlük dildeki kısaltmalar akademik metinde kullanılmaz.
- 'may reflect', 'could also be', 'might simply be', 'may have influenced', 'might address', 'could also replicate', 'may indicate' — akademik hedging zinciri; her biri iddiayı yumuşatır.
- 'may have influenced' geçmiş ihtimali akademik tonda kurar: modal + have + V3.
- 'cannot confirm' ve 'cannot fully separate' güçlü olumsuzlarla dengelenir: ihtimal açık bırakılır, kesinlik reddedilir.
- Son cümledeki 'would ... go beyond' de ihtiyatı sürdürür; yazar iddiasını sınırların içinde tutar.
- Bu register'da kısaltma (could be, might do) ve 'maybe' kullanılmaz; tam modal + fiil tercih edilir.
- Bu tür temkinli dil akademik yazının belkemiğidir; ayrıntı için Temkinli Dil (Hedging) konusuna bak.
In academic writing, possibility modals are cautious expression (hedging) indispensable. The writer softens the claim and avoids speaking with certainty. In this context, may is especially common; might/could also appears. The short forms of everyday language are not used in academic text.
- 'may reflect', 'could also be', 'might simply be', 'may have influenced', 'might address', 'could also replicate', 'may indicate' — a chain of academic hedging; each softens the claim.
- 'may have influenced' forms a past possibility in an academic tone: modal + have + V3.
- 'cannot confirm' and 'cannot fully separate' balance it with strong negatives: possibility is left open, certainty is refused.
- The 'would ... go beyond' in the last sentence also maintains caution; the writer keeps the claim within limits.
- In this register, short forms (could be, might do) and 'maybe' are not used; a full modal + verb is preferred.
- This kind of cautious language is the backbone of academic writing; for detail, see Cautious Language (Hedging) the topic.
- 'might still be in there' — şimdiki ihtimal; 'still' devamlılığı vurgular.
- 'may have fallen ill' / 'might have run out' / 'could have slipped' / 'someone might have to' — geçmiş ve gelecek ihtimalleri have + V3 / have to ile.
- 'could be asleep' / 'might be sitting' — şu anki durum ve süregelen eylem ihtimali (modal + be + V-ing).
- 'he may be hurt' — şimdiki durum ihtimali; zayıf kanıttan endişe.
- 'it might not be good' / 'he may not want visitors' — olumsuz ihtimal (kötü olma / istememe olasılığı).
- 'should have been burning' — beklenti/çıkarım; ihtimalden farkı sezilebilir (Çıkarım (must / can't / might)).
- 'They may never find out' — 'never' ile birleşen geniş, sürekli bir ihtimal; gelecekteki belirsizliği kapatır.
- 'it might already be too late' — 'already' geçmiş-şimdi köprüsü kurar; ihtimal şimdiki sonuca bağlanır.
- 'might have seen' / 'may have taken' — geçmiş ihtimalin üst üste kullanımı; olay örgüsünü açık tutar.
- 'They might spend the whole night ... and still learn nothing' — geleceğe dönük olumsuz-sonuçlu ihtimal.
- 'might still be in there' — present possibility; 'still' stresses continuity.
- 'may have fallen ill' / 'might have run out' / 'could have slipped' / 'someone might have to' — past and future possibilities with have + V3 / have to.
- 'could be asleep' / 'might be sitting' — present-state and ongoing-action possibility (modal + be + V-ing).
- 'he may be hurt' — present-state possibility; worry from weak evidence.
- 'it might not be good' / 'he may not want visitors' — negative possibility (the chance of being bad / not wanting).
- 'should have been burning' — expectation/deduction; its difference from possibility can be sensed (Deduction (must / can't / might)).
- 'They may never find out' — a broad, continuous possibility joined with 'never'; it seals the future uncertainty.
- 'it might already be too late' — 'already' builds a past-present bridge; the possibility is tied to a present result.
- 'might have seen' / 'may have taken' — stacked use of past possibility; it keeps the plot open.
- 'They might spend the whole night ... and still learn nothing' — a future-oriented possibility with a negative outcome.

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı değil, anlamı test eder. Cümlenin ne demek istediğini düşün.
- "She might not come." — Gelmesi yasak mı, yoksa gelmeme ihtimali mi var?Gelmeme ihtimali var (olasılık). Yasak değil; 'might not' burada düşük ihtimal anlatır.
- "He may have left." — Olay şimdi mi geçmişte mi?Geçmişte. 'may have + V3' geçmiş bir olayın ihtimalini anlatır: gitmiş olabilir.
- "It could be raining." — Yağmur kesin mi, yoksa şu an yağıyor olma ihtimali mi?Şu an yağıyor olma ihtimali. 'could be + V-ing' süregelen eylem tahmini; kesinlik yok.
- "That can't be true." vs "That might not be true." — Fark ne?'can't be' = imkânsız/kesin değil (çıkarım). 'might not be' = doğru olmayabilir (ihtimal açık). Kesinlik dereceleri farklı.

Görev: Bir arkadaşın bir buluşmaya gelmedi ve telefonu açmıyor. Ne olmuş olabileceği hakkında en az 6 cümle yaz. Farklı zamanları ve yapıları kullan: şimdiki ihtimal, süregelen ihtimal, geçmiş ihtimal ve bir olumsuz ihtimal.
- En az bir may/might/could + be + V-ing (süregelen) cümlesi kur.
- En az bir may/might/could have + V3 (geçmiş) cümlesi kur.
- En az bir olumsuz ihtimal (might not / may not) kullan.
- 'maybe' ile modalı aynı cümlede tekrar etme.
- Sonunda bir de nazik öneri (could) ekle: ne yapabilirsin?
Task: A friend didn't come to a meeting and isn't answering the phone. Write at least 6 sentences about what might have happened. Use different times and structures: present possibility, ongoing possibility, past possibility and one negative possibility.
- Write at least one may/might/could + be + V-ing (ongoing) sentence.
- Write at least one may/might/could have + V3 (past) sentence.
- Write at least one negative possibility use (might not / may not).
- Don't repeat the modal with 'maybe' in the same sentence.
- At the end, also add a polite suggestion (could): what could you do?
Kavram kontrolü için soru örnekleri (CCQ): "Is she definitely at home?" (Hayır) → "So is it possible or certain?" (Possible). Bu ikili, ihtimal ile çıkarım (Çıkarım (must / can't / might)) ayrımını sezdirir. Perfect modal (may have + V3) için: "Are we talking about now or the past?" sorusu netleştirir.
Etkinlik önerisi: "Mystery bag / kapalı kutu": kutuya bir nesne koy, öğrenciler "It might be a...", "It could be..." ile tahmin etsin. Bir başka etkinlik: bir fotoğrafta belirsiz bir sahne göster, öğrenciler ne olduğu ve ne olmuş olabileceği (geçmiş ihtimal) hakkında cümle üretsin. Sonra 'must/can't' ekleyip çıkarımla karşılaştırma köprüsü kur.
Sample questions for concept checking (CCQ): "Is she definitely at home?" (No) → "So is it possible or certain?" (Possible). This pair conveys the distinction between possibility and deduction (Deduction (must / can't / might)). For the perfect modal (may have + V3), the question "Are we talking about now or the past?" clarifies it.
Activity idea: "Mystery bag": put an object in a box; students guess with "It might be a...", "It could be...". Another activity: show an ambiguous scene in a photo; students produce sentences about what it is and what might have happened (past possibility). Then add 'must/can't' and build a bridge comparing it with deduction.
- may / might / could bir olayın ihtimalini (belki olur) anlatır; kesinlik değil.
- Kalıp: özne + modal + fiilin yalın hali; fiile -s, -ed, to eklenmez.
- Üçü de hem şimdi hem gelecek ihtimali verir; zamanı bağlam belirler.
- İhtimal derecesi farkı incedir: could/might biraz daha temkinli, may biraz daha resmi/ölçülü.
- Geçmiş ihtimal: modal + have + V3 (may have gone). Süregelen: modal + be + V-ing (might be working).
- Olumsuz: may not / might not = "olmayabilir". can't = "olamaz" (imkânsız, çıkarım — farklı!).
- could ayrıca nazik öneri/seçenek sunar (We could...).
- İki modal yan yana gelmez (may will ❌); 'maybe' ile modalı aynı cümlede tekrarlama.
- İhtimali çıkarımdan (Çıkarım (must / can't / might)) ve kesin gelecekten (Gelecek (will / going to)) ayır.
- Türkçe "-ebilir" hem yetenek hem ihtimaldir; İngilizcede bunları ayrı modallar üstlenir (Yeterlilik (can / could / be able to)).
- may / might / could state an event's probability (it may happen); not certainty.
- Pattern: subject + modal + the bare form of the verb; the verb takes no -s, -ed, to added.
- All three express both present , and future give the possibility; context sets the time.
- The probability-degree difference is subtle: could/might a little more cautious, may a little more formal/measured.
- Past possibility: modal + have + V3 (may have gone). Ongoing: modal + be + V-ing (might be working).
- Negative: may not / might not = "might not be". can't = "can't be" (impossible, deduction — different!).
- could also offers a polite suggestion/option (We could...).
- Two modals don't stand side by side (may will ❌); don't repeat the modal with 'maybe' in the same sentence.
- Separate possibility from deduction (Deduction (must / can't / might)) and the definite future (The future (will / going to)).
- Turkish "-ebilir" is both ability and possibility; in English separate modals take these on (Ability (can / could / be able to)).
