- Güncel olmayan ücret/tarih bilgisine güvenmek: İnternette dolaşan eski rakamlar yanıltıcıdır; her zaman ÖSYM kılavuzunu esas alın.
The YDS and e-YDS are two fundamental foreign language exams accepted as valid in Turkey for academic promotion, overseas assignment, doctoral applications and many civil-service processes. Both are administered by ÖSYM and carry the same score validity; the difference between them lies in how they are administered, their frequency and the speed of results. In this article we cover the whole process step by step, from the application to exam day, from the logic of the fee to the announcement of results. But a warning from the very start: the date, fee and session information here is given as a general framework and estimated ranges; exact and up-to-date information is always found in ÖSYM's official guide and exam calendar.
Important: Exam fees, application dates and the number of sessions are updated every year. Before applying, always read the current guide on ÖSYM's official website ( osym.gov.tr). The figures in this article are only meant to give you an idea.
Summary (TL;DR)
- The e-YDS is the computer-based version of the YDS that is offered more frequently during the year; the content and scoring logic are the same.
- Applications are made through ÖSYM's AİS; spreading the calendar across the year provides flexibility.
- Results are generally announced faster than for the classic YDS.
- Exam-day rules are applied according to ÖSYM's guide; reading the current guide is essential.
What Is the Difference Between the YDS and the e-YDS?
The most frequently confused issue is whether the YDS and e-YDS are different exams. In fact, both share the same content, the same scoring logic and the same validity. The difference is in how the exam is administered.
The essenceThe YDS and e-YDS have the same content, the same scoring logic and the same validity. The only difference between them is the mode of administration, the frequency of sessions and the speed of results.
The classic YDS is a mass exam taken with pen and paper, in large halls, by thousands of candidates at the same time. It is generally held twice a year, in the spring and autumn periods. Marking is done on an optical form and results are announced after the collective evaluation.
The e-YDS, on the other hand, is administered on computers at the electronic exam centres designated by ÖSYM. The candidate sees the questions on screen and marks their answers with a mouse/keyboard. The most distinctive feature of the e-YDS is that it is offered much more frequently during the year; separate sessions can be scheduled for different languages, English first and foremost. Thus, instead of being squeezed into a narrow window such as twice a year, candidates gain the flexibility to sit the exam on a date that suits them.
In terms of content, there is no difference between studying for the classic YDS and studying for the e-YDS. The question types (vocabulary, grammar, cloze test, sentence completion, translation, paragraph questions, coherence) are the same. If you have not yet clarified what the exam is and which tasks it covers, we recommend you first read the what is the YDS article.
Advantages of the e-YDS
Many candidates prefer the e-YDS over the classic YDS because of its flexibility and speed. The main advantages are:
- Frequent sessions: being offered many times during the year lets candidates sit the exam when they feel ready, without being tied to a specific date.
- Fast results: thanks to computer-based administration, results are generally announced in a shorter time than for the classic YDS. This is a critical advantage for candidates who need to meet a deadline for an academic application or assignment.
- Flexible planning: because you can choose among several sessions, the risk of clashing with work, classes or other obligations is reduced.
- Comfortable setting: instead of crowded halls, the exam is taken at more controlled computer stations allocated per person.
- Opportunity to raise your score: because it is offered at frequent intervals, a candidate who cannot reach the desired score finds a chance to try again within a short time.
That said, the e-YDS's session quotas may be limited and in some periods the quota may fill quickly. For this reason it is important not to miss the application period.
"The e-YDS is the version of the YDS that is administered on computer, offered much more frequently during the year and delivers results faster — the content and score are the same, the only thing that changes is flexibility.
Application Steps: Through ÖSYM AİS
Both YDS and e-YDS applications are made entirely online through ÖSYM's Candidate Operations System (AİS). There is no need to go to a physical application centre. The general flow is as follows:
- Log in to AİS: you log in to the Candidate Operations System on ÖSYM's official site with your Turkish ID number and password. If you are applying for the first time, you first need to register in the system and obtain a password.
- Read the guide: carefully read the application guide for the relevant exam. The guide includes the valid document requirements, fees, session dates and language options.
- Photo and information check: make sure your photo and personal information in the system are current and compliant with the rules. A non-compliant photo may lead to the rejection of your application.
- Exam and session selection: you select the exam you want to sit, the language (English, German, French, etc.) and, for the e-YDS, a suitable session and exam centre.
- Payment: you pay the application fee through the banks or online payment channels specified by ÖSYM. The application is not considered valid until payment is completed.
- Confirmation and document: once your application is complete, check your application details in the system. Before the exam, the exam entry document is again published through AİS.
Tip: Do not leave the application to the last day. Delays that may occur in payment or system access due to heavy traffic can prevent late candidates from completing their applications.
The Logic of the Exam Calendar
ÖSYM publishes an exam calendar every year, and YDS and e-YDS sessions are announced in advance in this calendar. The general logic of the calendar is as follows:
- Classic YDS: generally planned in two periods a year, in the spring and autumn. Since these sessions have broad participation, the application windows also open relatively early.
- e-YDS: contains many sessions spread throughout the year. Separate dates may be set for different languages; for example, English e-YDS sessions may fall on different days from the sessions of other languages.
2classic YDS periods / year
Manye-YDS sessions / year
AİSthe single application channel
Each session has its own application start and end date, late-application period (if any) and exam day. Because these dates change from year to year, we cannot give exact days here; base your plan on the ÖSYM calendar. As a general strategy, choosing a session that falls at least a few months before your target application deadline (for example, an academic incentive or doctoral application) also leaves time for a possible score-raising attempt.
Exam Fee
YDS and e-YDS fees are set by ÖSYM for each exam period and are updated from year to year in line with inflation. For this reason, giving a fixed figure would be misleading. As a general framework, it is useful to know the following:
- The fee may vary according to the exam you choose and, in some cases, the language or session type.
- An additional fee may be charged for those who apply during the late-application period.
- An application is not finalised without payment; the fee paid is generally non-refundable, so check your application details carefully.
Warning: The current exam fee is announced only in ÖSYM's guide for the relevant period. Do not rely on old figures from other sources; for the exact fee, always check the official guide.
Exam Day Rules
The rules that must be followed on exam day are vital for the exam to be considered valid. A violation of the rules can go as far as cancellation of the exam. The key points:
- Identity document: you are required to have a valid photo ID with you (Turkish ID card or an official document accepted by ÖSYM). You will not be admitted to the exam without ID.
- Exam entry document: your entry document published through AİS shows the exam venue, time and hall information. Check the document in advance and plan your route accordingly.
- Arriving on time: reach the exam building at and before the time specified by ÖSYM. Late candidates may not be admitted to the hall.
- Prohibited items: mobile phones, smartwatches, headphones, all kinds of electronic devices, bags and similar items may not be brought into the hall. Because the e-YDS is taken on a computer, bringing personal electronic devices is still prohibited.
- Exam conduct: follow the instructions of the invigilators; avoid any behaviour that could be considered cheating or a rule violation.
Announcement of Results and the Score Document
Exam results are announced on the date determined by ÖSYM, and candidates view their results through AİS. For the e-YDS, thanks to computer-based administration, results are generally published faster than for the classic YDS.
When the result is announced, your score and information about your exam performance appear in the system. In institutional applications that require this score (university, public institution, academic incentive, etc.) you can view and use your score document through AİS. If you are curious about how the YDS score is calculated and the relationship between correct and wrong answers, the YDS scoring article explains the process in detail.
| Stage | Classic YDS | e-YDS |
| Mode of administration | Pen and paper, optical form | Computer-based |
| Frequency | Generally 2 periods a year | Many sessions during the year |
| Result speed | Relatively later | Relatively faster |
| Application channel | ÖSYM AİS | ÖSYM AİS |
| Validity | Same | Same |
How Many Times Can You Sit It and Raising Your Score
There is no limit on the number of times you can sit the YDS and e-YDS; a candidate can apply for as many sessions as they like (paying a separate fee for each). This is an important flexibility, especially for candidates who need to reach a specific score threshold.
For candidates wanting to raise their score, the e-YDS is advantageous, because since sessions are offered frequently the waiting time between two attempts is shorter. A candidate who falls below the targeted score in one exam can enter a new session within a short time and try to raise their score. The validity period of your score, on the other hand, varies according to the rules of the institution you apply to; while one institution accepts a score taken within a certain number of years, another may require a different period. For this reason, always check the validity requirement of the institution where you will use your score.
Systematic preparation is essential for raising your score. For a programme that includes time management, vocabulary work and question-type practice, you can make use of our how to study for the YDS guide.
Common Mistakes
The mistakes candidates most often fall into during the application and exam process can easily be prevented with a little care:
- Leaving the application to the last day: the application may not be completed because of payment or system problems.
- Choosing the wrong session or language: accidentally selecting another language instead of English, or marking an unsuitable date, is common. Check your selections twice before confirming.
- Photo and information errors: a non-compliant photo or outdated information can invalidate the application.
- Not checking the entry document: noticing the exam venue and time late can lead you to go to the wrong centre.
- Carelessness about ID or prohibited items: forgetting your ID completely blocks entry to the exam; carrying a prohibited item can cause the exam to be cancelled.
- Relying on outdated fee/date information: the old figures circulating on the internet are misleading; always base yourself on the ÖSYM guide.
| What helps you in the process | What costs you in the process |
| Completes the application and fee steps early, according to the calendar. | Leaves it to the last day and runs into a quota or payment problem. |
| Reads the exam-day rules (ID, prohibited items) from the guide in advance. | Is not admitted to the exam due to a rule/ID violation, or the exam is voided. |
| Uses the frequent-calendar advantage to start raising their score early. | Locks onto a single date and misses the chance to practise and improve. |
Summary
The YDS and e-YDS are two modes of administration with the same validity: the classic YDS is on paper and held a few periods a year, while the e-YDS is a computer-based format that is more frequent and delivers faster results. Applications are made through ÖSYM AİS with a Turkish ID and online payment. On exam day an ID and entry document are mandatory and electronic devices are prohibited. There is no limit on the number of attempts; the e-YDS's frequent sessions make raising your score easier. Finally, let us remind you again: the date, fee and session information in this article is a general framework; exact and up-to-date information is found only on ÖSYM's official site and in the period guide. Be sure to check there before applying.
