- YDS 80 sorudur, 100 puan üzerinden değerlendirilir; her soru yaklaşık 1,25 puan değerindedir.
Kendi programınızın kılavuzunu görmeden 55'i garanti saymayın.
Durum. Bir aday 80 sorunun 70'ini doğru, 6'sını yanlış yapmış, 4'ünü boş bırakmış.
Hesap. Yanlış, doğruyu götürmediği için net = doğru sayısı = 70. Her soru 100 ÷ 80 = 1,25 puan. Ham puan ≈ 70 × 1,25 = 87,5.
Kritik nokta.
The score you get on the YDS turns into a single number that opens many doors, from your academic career to your civil-service allowance. But how is this number calculated, how many points does each correct answer earn, and what do the thresholds called "cut-off scores" really mean? In this article we explain the logic of YDS scoring step by step and help you draw up a realistic score plan based on your goal. Let's start with an important warning: exact cut-off figures vary by institution, position and year; the numbers in this article are given for guidance only, so before you apply always verify the current requirement with the relevant institution and with ÖSYM's official guides.
Summary (TL;DR)
- The YDS has 80 questions and is scored out of 100; each question is worth about 1.25 points.
- A wrong answer does not cancel a correct one; so on a question you are unsure of, instead of leaving it blank, the right move is to make a sensible elimination and mark an answer.
- A "good score" is not absolute; the threshold required changes according to your goal (master's, allowance, associate professorship).
- The way to raise your score is to increase your net: repair the question type you lose the most points on by analysing past questions.
YDS scoring logic: 80 questions, 100 points
The YDS (Foreign Language Proficiency Exam) consists of a total of 80 questions and the exam is scored out of a full 100 points. The simple but critical conclusion to draw from this is: each correct answer is worth roughly 1.25 points (100 ÷ 80 = 1.25). In other words, by multiplying the number of questions you answer correctly by 1.25 you can make a fairly accurate estimate of your score.
The most asked-about and most reassuring feature of YDS scoring is this: a wrong answer does not cancel a correct one. Unlike some exams, the YDS has no rule where four wrong answers wipe out one correct answer. This changes a lot in terms of strategy: even on a question you are not sure of, there is no harm in making a sensible elimination and marking an answer; on the contrary, you have a chance of earning points even if only through luck. Instead of leaving a question blank, eliminating the options you can rule out and choosing among the rest is statistically the smarter move.
Don't leave points on the tableA wrong answer does not cancel a correct one. So even on a question you are unsure of, eliminate and mark an answer; leaving it blank means leaving potential points directly on the table. When the exam ends, no question should be left blank.
ÖSYM may from time to time subject the raw score to a standard conversion when calculating scores, and may make adjustments for questions that are cancelled or found to be faulty. For this reason "how many net, how many points" tables are always approximate; your exact score becomes clear only when the official result is announced.
The concept of "net" is important here. In a system where wrong answers do not cancel correct ones, "net" in practice means the same as "number of correct answers." For example, for a candidate who gets 60 correct and 20 wrong, the net is also 60; the wrong answers do not pull the score down. That is why, when talking about targets in the YDS, thinking directly in terms of "how many correct" is the simplest approach.
The net-to-score relationship: how many correct answers earn how many points?
The table below converts the number of correct answers into an approximate score, on the assumption that wrong answers do not count against you. Remember that in real results there may be small deviations because of ÖSYM's conversion; this table is a compass for setting a target, not a firm guarantee.
| Number correct (out of 80) | Approximate score (out of 100) | Rough equivalent |
| 40 correct | ~50 points | Intermediate; insufficient for many thresholds |
| 44 correct | ~55 points | Frequently required threshold for doctorate/associate professorship |
| 48 correct | ~60 points | First allowance tier, many academic applications |
| 52 correct | ~65 points | Strong profile in appointment and incentive applications |
| 56 correct | ~70 points | Competitive positions, second allowance tier |
| 64 correct | ~80 points | Senior positions, high allowance tier |
| 68 correct | ~85 points | Special institutions/positions requiring a very high threshold |
| 72 correct | ~90 points | Top allowance tier and elite applications |
| 76+ correct | ~95+ points | Almost perfect; reached by a very limited number of candidates |
As the table shows, the 50 to 70 point range is where the goals of the vast majority of candidates are concentrated, and in this range every 4 correct answers correspond to about 5 points. That is, to move 5 points closer to your goal you need to answer on average 4 more questions correctly; this is a useful yardstick for making your study plan concrete. If you would like a more detailed look at what the YDS is and its exam structure, our what is the YDS article is a good starting point.
For what purposes are typical cut-off and threshold scores required?
A "cut-off score" is not a single number; it is a family of thresholds that changes according to the purpose of your application. Below we summarise the most commonly encountered uses and the ranges generally required for them. Let us emphasise again: these are typical values, they are not binding, and each institution may set its own threshold.
Doctorate · associate professorship
The most frequently cited floor is 55. Some programmes may require 60-65; health, engineering and departments teaching in a foreign language may set a higher threshold.
Appointment · incentive
For faculty positions, reappointment and academic incentive, generally between 55 and 65 is required. In competitive positions you will in practice compete against candidates with much higher scores.
Allowance tiers
For public personnel, the allowance rises as the score rises; tiers of 60, 70, 80 and 90 and above are generally defined. The exact figure is set by legislation.
Doctorate and associate professorship applications
In academic promotions the most frequently cited number is 55. For applications to doctoral/proficiency-in-art programmes and for associate professorship applications, at least 55 points is generally required. Some programmes go above this and may require 60 or 65; health, engineering, or departments teaching in a foreign language may set higher thresholds. Do not assume 55 is guaranteed without seeing your own programme's guide.
Academic appointment, promotion and incentive
In processes such as appointment to faculty positions, reappointment and academic incentive, a score generally between 55 and 65 is required. Since universities set this threshold themselves in their own appointment-and-promotion directives, 55 may be enough for the same title at one university while 65 is required at another. In positions where competition is high, even if the announced minimum threshold is low, in practice you compete against candidates with much higher scores.
Specific positions and institutions
Some special positions, foreign-relations units, institutions working with international organisations and roles directly related to language may set markedly higher thresholds such as 65, 80 or even 85. For example, in foreign language teaching, translation-and-interpreting-related roles, or positions requiring international correspondence, the threshold rises. In such vacancy announcements the score often functions as a "pre-elimination."
Civil-servant foreign language allowance
For public personnel, the foreign language proficiency score is tied to a tiered allowance system. The general framework is as follows: as the score rises, the allowance paid also rises, and tiers such as 60, 70, 80 and 90 and above are generally defined. So while 60 points provides a base allowance, scores above 90 correspond to the highest tier. The allowance amounts and tier boundaries are set by legislation and may be updated over time; for the exact figure, consult your institution's personnel/HR unit.
As you can see, there is no single "passing grade." While 55 is enough for a doctorate, for a high allowance tier or a competitive position you may need to exceed 80. That is why clarifying your goal from the outset is the first step to targeting the right score.
A "good score" depends on your goal
"In the YDS there is no absolute "good score"; a good score is the one that gets you to your goal. While 60 is reassuring for a doctorate, for the highest allowance tier 60 is only a starting point.
In the YDS there is no absolute "good score"; a good score is the one that gets you to your goal. While 60 is more than reassuring for a candidate applying for a doctorate, for a public employee wanting the highest allowance tier 60 is only a starting point. That is why, before you start studying, clarify these three questions:
- For what purpose will I use the score? Doctorate, appointment, incentive, allowance or an institutional vacancy; each has a different threshold.
- What is the relevant institution's current minimum requirement? Verify this from the announcement or directive itself; do not rely on hearsay figures.
- Is there competition? Even if the minimum threshold is low, if you are applying for a limited quota, targeting a score well above the threshold is realistic.
A practical suggestion: aim for at least 5 points above your target threshold. This buffer compensates for the point loss that stress, distraction or a difficult group of questions on exam day may cause. If your target is 55, planning for the 60-65 range; if it is 70, around 75, keeps you on the safe side. To see all the places where your score will be useful, take a look at our where the YDS is valid article.
Score validity period
The "shelf life" of your YDS score is at least as important as the score itself. In academic use, YDS and equivalent exam scores are generally considered valid for 5 years; that is, you can use them in applications for five years from the exam date. However, this period is not absolute:
100full marks
~5 yearstypical validity
55frequently required academic floor
- Some institutions and announcements may set a shorter validity (for example, taken within the last 3 years or the last 2 years).
- In certain appointment and promotion processes, the score is required to be "valid at the date of application"; an expired score may not be accepted.
- The validity period may be updated with changes in legislation.
For this reason, verify whether the score you hold is still valid from the current guide of the institution you are applying to. If you are going to make an important application with a score that is about to expire, it may be wise to plan to sit a new exam to be safe.
YÖKDİL equivalence and other exams
The YDS is not the only foreign language proficiency exam in Turkey. YÖKDİL (Higher Education Institutions Foreign Language Exam), prepared for academic fields (social sciences, natural sciences, health), is an exam that is accepted as equivalent to the YDS in many academic processes. Its scoring logic is similar: it is scored out of 100, and in most places where a YDS score is accepted for academic applications, a YÖKDİL score is also accepted.
In addition, ÖSYM also publishes equivalence tables for international exams (such as TOEFL); these tables show which international score corresponds to how many YDS points. But be careful: equivalence is not automatically valid for every application. While some institutions accept only YDS/YÖKDİL, others also count international exams. Always verify which exams are accepted and the current equivalence coefficients from ÖSYM's official equivalence table and from the institution you are applying to.
Raising your score: a practical strategy
If your current score is below your goal, the good news is this: the YDS is largely a studyable and predictable exam. The most effective approaches for raising your score are:
- Grow your vocabulary systematically. The YDS's vocabulary and sentence-completion questions make up a significant part of the score; regular vocabulary work is the investment with the fastest return.
- Give weight to paragraph and reading questions. One of the sections with the highest number of questions is the reading passages. As your reading speed and question technique improve, your score rises quickly.
- Learn grammar patterns with logic, not memorisation. Topics such as conjunctions, prepositions and tense agreement are recurring patterns; once you have them down, they turn into guaranteed points.
- Settle your time management with practice exams. Since wrong answers do not count against you, it is essential to mark every question; by doing practice exams, learn to divide your time correctly and do not leave any question blank at the last minute.
- Take error analysis seriously. After every practice exam, group your wrong answers by topic; closing recurring error types brings points faster than learning new topics.
Remember once more that wrong answers do not count against you: when the exam ends, be sure to mark even the questions you are unsure of. Even a few lucky correct answers can carry you up to a higher score tier or above the threshold. To build your study plan step by step, our how to study for the YDS guide offers you a concrete road map.
Worked example: from net to score
Let us see the scoring logic with a concrete calculation. This example clearly reveals that a wrong answer does not cancel a correct one and why a blank question is a "loss."
Situation. A candidate got 70 of the 80 questions correct, 6 wrong, and left 4 blank.
Calculation. Since a wrong answer does not cancel a correct one, net = number correct = 70. Each question is 100 ÷ 80 = 1.25 points. Raw score ≈ 70 × 1.25 = 87.5.
The critical point. If they had marked the 4 questions they left blank with a sensible elimination and had got only 2 of them right, their net would have risen to 72 and their score to 72 × 1.25 = 90. Since there is no penalty, leaving questions blank means leaving potential points on the table.
| Why it earns points | Why it loses points |
| Because they know there is no penalty, they mark even uncertain questions by elimination. | Because of the "wrong cancels right" misconception, they leave uncertain questions blank. |
| They know the threshold required for their goal; they do not burn time on needless perfectionism. | Thinking there is a single "good score" for everyone, they study toward the wrong target. |
| They achieve a net increase by investing in their weakest question type. | They solve questions of a type they are already strong in and neglect the area that is not improving. |
Summary and a final warning
The YDS is scored over 80 questions with a full 100 points; each correct answer is worth about 1.25 points and wrong answers do not lower the score. What we call a "cut-off" is not a single number but a family of thresholds that changes according to your purpose: frequently 55 for doctorate and associate professorship, 55-65 for academic appointment and incentive, 65-80-85 for some special positions, and tiers of 60/70/80/90 and above for the civil-servant foreign language allowance typically appear before you. Your score is generally valid for 5 years in academic use, YÖKDİL is considered equivalent in many processes, and with proper study raising your score is entirely possible.
All the figures in this article are for guidance. Exact cut-off scores, validity periods, equivalence coefficients and allowance tiers vary by institution, position, programme and year, and are updated over time. For this reason, before making an important application, always verify the current requirement with the relevant institution and with ÖSYM's official guides. Clarify your goal, plan a little above the threshold, and study regularly; the YDS is one of the exams that rewards you most clearly.
