Soru. Renewable energy has expanded rapidly over the past decade. ----, fossil fuels still account for the majority of global energy consumption, which complicates efforts to meet climate targets.
A) Therefore B) Nevertheless C) For instance D) Similarly E) In other words
Doğru cevap: B) Nevertheless. İki cümle arasında bir zıtlık vardır: yenilenebilir enerji hızla büyümüştür, buna rağmen fosil yakıtlar hâlâ tüketimin çoğunluğunu oluşturur. Nevertheless tam da bu beklenti-karşıtı ilişkiyi kurar.
Çeldiriciler neden yanlış:
- A) Therefore (bu yüzden): Neden-sonuç kurar; oysa büyüme fosil egemenliğinin sebebi değildir. Mantık ters.
- C) For instance (örneğin): İkinci cümle birincinin örneği değil, ona karşıt bir olgudur.
- D) Similarly (benzer şekilde): Benzerlik kurar; oysa iki cümle karşıt yöndedir.
- E) In other words (başka bir deyişle): Yeniden ifade beklenir; ikinci cümle ise yeni ve zıt bir bilgi getirir.
| Neden puan alır | Neden puan kaybeder |
| Boşluğa bakmadan önce iki cümle arasındaki ilişkiyi (zıtlık) belirler. | Geçiş sözcüklerini Türkçe karşılığıyla ezberleyip mantık ilişkisini kurmaz. |
| still, complicates gibi ipucu sözcükleri karşıtlığın işareti olarak okur. | Zıtlık ile sonuç ilişkisini (nevertheless / therefore) karıştırır. |
| Çıkmış sorularda aynı geçiş kalıplarını tanıyarak refleks geliştirir. | Analiz yapmadan soru çözer; aynı hatayı tekrar eder. |
Sık Yapılan Hatalar
Aynı hataları tekrarlayan adaylar, aylarca çalışıp yerinde saydıklarını fark ederler. En yaygın tuzaklar şunlardır:
- Sadece kelime ezberleyip soru çözmemek: En sık ve en pahalı hata budur. Binlerce kelime bilmek, o kelimeleri sınav mantığı içinde tanıyamıyorsanız işe yaramaz. Kelime ve soru çözümü paralel yürümelidir.
- Denemeyi analiz etmeden çözmek: Deneme çözüp puanı not edip geçmek, gelişimin yarısını çöpe atmaktır.
Studying for the YDS can turn into an endless slog of vocabulary memorization when you start without a proper plan. Yet the exam is built on a certain logic: a limited number of question types, a measurable stock of vocabulary, and structures that recur every year. In this article you will find an actionable road map, from how many months it may take you to prepare based on your current level of English, to a sample weekly program, from analyzing past questions to the strategy for the final two weeks. The goal is not to lengthen your study time but to turn the same amount of time into points.
Summary (TL;DR)
- The time needed varies from person to person; starting with a clear diagnostic (practice) exam is the best beginning.
- A weekly program should be balanced: vocabulary, grammar, question-type work, reading speed, and regular practice exams all go together.
- Analyzing past questions is far more productive than solving random questions; every mistake is a learning opportunity.
- The final two weeks are not for new topics but for consolidation and rehearsing time management.
How Many Months Does It Take to Prepare for the YDS?
There is no single answer to this question, because your starting point determines everything. To plan your preparation time realistically, you first need to place yourself honestly at a level. There are roughly three profiles:
- Near-beginner level (A1–A2): If you do not yet know basic grammar structures and everyday vocabulary, your target should not be the YDS directly. It is healthier to study basic English first for 4–6 months (simple tenses, sentence building, 2,000–3,000 core words) and then do YDS-specific preparation for 5–6 months. Think of it as a total of about 9–12 months.
- Intermediate level (B1–B2): If you can understand texts with the help of a dictionary and know the basic tenses, you can reach a serious score in the 3–6 month range with regular study. This is the real situation of most candidates.
- Advanced level (C1): If you can read academic texts comfortably, your gap is usually exam technique and time management. 6–10 weeks of intensive question-solving is often enough.

Before you settle on your timeline, understanding well what the YDS is and the logic of its scoring makes your job easier; for the general framework, you can take a look at our what is the YDS article. A conscious start prevents wasted weeks.
Be realistic: The promise of "80 points from scratch in 3 months" is a sales pitch, not the reality of learning. Setting a goal appropriate to your level is the most important decision for maintaining your motivation.
Start with a Diagnostic (Practice) Exam
The most productive way to begin preparation is not by downloading a vocabulary list but with a diagnostic practice exam. Solve an old ÖSYM YDS test under timed conditions and extract the following three pieces of data:
- Your raw score: How many did you get right? This is an objective snapshot of your starting level.
- Your time behavior: Did you finish within 180 minutes, or did you fail to reach the final paragraphs?
- Distribution of mistakes: Are your errors concentrated in vocabulary questions, in grammar/cloze, or in the reading passages?
These three pieces of data are the skeleton of your entire study plan. For example, if most of your mistakes are in the reading passages, you know you need to work on solving paragraphs and on reading speed rather than burying yourself in flashcards. A program made without a diagnostic is shooting blind.
Weekly Program: A Balanced Distribution
The most common mistake in YDS preparation is fixating on a single area (usually vocabulary) and neglecting the others. A good weekly program balances four legs: vocabulary, grammar, question-type work, and practice exams. Below is a sample distribution of about 12–14 hours per week for an intermediate candidate.
| Day | Main Focus | Time | Content |
| Monday | Vocabulary + Grammar | 2 hours | Review of 30 new words + study of tenses/tense agreement |
| Tuesday | Question Type | 2 hours | 30–40 sentence-completion and translation questions |
| Wednesday | Reading | 2 hours | 2–3 paragraphs, timed; then inferring unknown words |
| Thursday | Vocabulary + Cloze | 2 hours | Vocabulary review + paragraph completion (cloze) work |
| Friday | Question Type | 2 hours | Conjunctions, odd-one-out sentence, dialogue completion |
| Saturday | Practice Exam | 3 hours | Full or half practice exam, under timed conditions |
| Sunday | Analysis + Review | 1–2 hours | Analyzing practice-exam mistakes, error log |
This table is a template, not sacred scripture. Shift the proportions according to your diagnostic result: if reading is weak, increase the reading days; if grammar is strong, hand those days over to question-solving. The unchanging principle is this: no week should pass without a practice exam and analysis.
Building the Vocabulary and Grammar Foundation
The YDS measures a broad, academically weighted vocabulary. But "vocabulary work" does not mean reading lists from start to finish. The most productive way is to learn a word in context, with spaced repetition:
- Spaced repetition: Seeing a word once and moving on does not work. Reviewing the same word on day 1, day 3, day 7, and day 14 multiplies retention. Flashcard apps like Anki automate this process.
- Context first: Memorize a word not on its own but within an example sentence. Most words asked on the YDS take their meaning from their place in the sentence.
- Roots and affixes: Recognizing Latin/Greek roots (e.g. "bene-", "-cede", "mal-") gives you the power to guess even words you have never seen.
You can find a detailed method for vocabulary work and the priority word groups in our YDS vocabulary article. On the grammar side, four structures directly affect your score: tenses and tense agreement, prepositions, conjunctions, and relative clauses. Solidifying these four headings secures most of the sentence-completion and cloze questions.
Question-Type-Based Study and Analysis of Past Questions
The greatest strength of the YDS is that it is predictable. Similar question types recur on every exam: vocabulary, grammar, cloze (paragraph completion), sentence completion, translation, paragraph questions, dialogue completion, closest-in-meaning sentence, the sentence that disrupts the flow of the paragraph, and restatement. Each type has its own solving reflex, and you gain these only by solving piles of questions of that type.
At this point it must be underlined firmly: past questions are the most valuable resource you have. The real questions ÖSYM has asked in previous years reflect exactly the exam's language level, its trap logic, and its question patterns. No practice test on the market takes the place of real past questions.
The backbone of preparationPast questions are the most valuable resource you have. ÖSYM's past questions reflect exactly the exam's language level, trap logic, and patterns — instead of just counting each question right/wrong, examine it like a case study.
When solving past questions, do not just count right/wrong; examine each question like a case study:
- What was the structure that made the correct option correct?
- What was the trap that pulled you toward the distractor?
- Which word did you not know, and did it go into your error log?
To get to know each of the question types in depth, you can use the detailed breakdown in our YDS question types article. Working type by type makes for much faster progress than scattered question-solving.
Increasing Reading and Paragraph Speed
On the YDS, a large part of the score comes from reading-based questions (paragraph questions, cloze, sentence completion). For this reason, your reading speed and comprehension ability are directly reflected in your score. A slow reader loses to the clock even if they know the words.
The healthy way to increase reading speed is not to "skim" the text with your eyes and give up on it, but to acquire the habit of fluent reading with understanding:
- Read in chunks: Try to read in meaning-chunks rather than word by word. This reduces eye fixations.
- Look at the question first: In paragraph questions, reading the question before going to the text determines what you focus on.
- Daily academic reading: Reading an English news or popular-science text a few times a week gives you familiarity with the kind of language you will meet on exam day.
Tip: The main idea of a paragraph is usually hidden in the first and last sentences. Catching the main idea quickly saves time both in paragraph questions and in the "sentence that disrupts the flow" type.
Practice Exams and Time Management
The YDS consists of 80 questions and your time is 180 minutes. Even simple division gives the essence of the strategy: an average of about 2 minutes per question. But distributing this time equally across every question is a mistake. You should get through vocabulary and grammar questions in 30–60 seconds and transfer the time you save to the reading passages.
180 mintotal time
~2 minpace per question
4grammar foundations
2 weeksfinal consolidation
Time management is the critical factor that determines the score on the YDS. A good exam tactic is this:
- Go from easy to hard: You do not have to go in order from start to finish. Do the quickly solved vocabulary and grammar questions first, and build up your confidence and your time.
- Do not get stuck; mark it and move on: If you have spent more than 2 minutes on a question, mark it and continue. Do not sacrifice three easy questions for a single one.
- Leave time for the answer sheet: Marking answers on the question booklet and transferring them all at the very end can be risky; set aside the last 10–15 minutes for checking the answer sheet.
Always solve the practice exam under real exam conditions, in one sitting and timed. A practice exam solved at home in broken-up sessions does not teach time pressure; yet at the actual exam it is precisely this pressure that will challenge you.
Free and Effective Resources
You are not doomed to expensive courses for quality YDS preparation. Most of the most valuable resources are free; the point is to use them correctly:
- ÖSYM past questions: The past YDS questions and answer keys published on ÖSYM's official site are a resource of an authenticity no paid material can provide. These should be the backbone of your preparation.
- Gri English YDS modules: The YDS modules on gringlizce.com can be used free for question-type-based study and vocabulary practice; they serve as a resource that complements past-question analysis.
- Academic reading sources: English popular-science and news sites improve your reading speed for free.
- Flashcard apps: Free spaced-repetition tools like Anki provide vocabulary retention in the most efficient way.
To be honest: owning an expensive set of resources will not carry you to success; solving past questions with discipline will. It is not an abundance of resources but depth of resource that pays off.
"An expensive set of resources will not carry you to success; solving past questions with discipline will — it is not an abundance of resources but depth of resource that pays off.
Worked example: a transition word in a cloze test
Let us see how past-question analysis works in a single blank. One of the most frequent blank types in a cloze test is a transition word (conjunction/adverb): the logic of the blank is determined by the relationship between the sentences (contrast, result, or example).
Question. Renewable energy has expanded rapidly over the past decade. ----, fossil fuels still account for the majority of global energy consumption, which complicates efforts to meet climate targets.
A) Therefore B) Nevertheless C) For instance D) Similarly E) In other words
Correct answer: B) Nevertheless. There is a contrast between the two sentences: renewable energy has grown rapidly, yet despite this fossil fuels still make up the majority of consumption. Nevertheless establishes exactly this contrary-to-expectation relationship.
Why the distractors are wrong:
- A) Therefore: Establishes cause and effect; but the growth is not the cause of fossil-fuel dominance. The logic is reversed.
- C) For instance: The second sentence is not an example of the first but a fact that contradicts it.
- D) Similarly: Establishes similarity; but the two sentences are in opposite directions.
- E) In other words: A restatement is expected; the second sentence, however, brings new and contrary information.
| Why it earns points | Why it loses points |
| Before looking at the blank, determines the relationship (contrast) between the two sentences. | Memorizes transition words by their Turkish equivalents and fails to establish the logical relationship. |
| Reads clue words like still and complicates as signs of contrast. | Confuses the contrast and the result relationship (nevertheless / therefore). |
| Develops a reflex by recognizing the same transition patterns in past questions. | Solves questions without analysis; repeats the same mistake. |
Common Mistakes
Candidates who repeat the same mistakes find that they have studied for months and stood still. The most common traps are these:
- Only memorizing vocabulary and not solving questions: This is the most common and most costly mistake. Knowing thousands of words is useless if you cannot recognize them within the logic of the exam. Vocabulary and question-solving must go in parallel.
- Solving a practice exam without analyzing it: Solving a practice exam, noting the score, and moving on throws away half of the improvement. The real learning is in the analysis phase where the mistakes are examined.
- Studying without timing yourself: Solving questions under relaxed conditions creates a misleading self-confidence. You only get used to exam pressure by studying under timed conditions.
- Skipping the four basic grammar headings: When tenses, prepositions, conjunctions, and relative clauses are neglected, systematic point loss occurs in cloze and sentence-completion questions.
- Setting an unrealistic goal: A candidate who tries to reach a goal far above their level in a short time burns out and quits.
The Final Two Weeks: Consolidation Strategy
With two weeks left before the exam, the time for learning new topics has passed. This period is one of consolidating what you have learned and maintaining exam form:
- Cut off the flow of new words: Instead of memorizing new lists, review the words in your error log and those you have studied before. Solidifying familiar words is more valuable than adding new ones.
- Increase the frequency of practice exams: In these two weeks, solve a few full practice exams under real conditions. The goal is to accustom your body to the rhythm of exam day (180 minutes, one sitting).
- Review your error log: Scan the mistakes you have accumulated one last time. Knowing your recurring error patterns keeps you from falling into those traps on the exam.
- Sleep and routine: Studying until dawn the night before lowers your score. In the days before the exam, give priority to sleep and rest; a rested mind is far more successful at time management.
In short: YDS success is hidden not in a magic resource but in a balanced program. Start with a diagnostic, build vocabulary and grammar in parallel, solve past questions by analyzing them, and internalize time management through practice exams. The candidate who keeps this cycle going steadily for months reaches their target score.
