The weather was so ______ that we decided to cancel our picnic and stay indoors.
A) sunny B) terrible C) calm D) warm E) pleasant
Doğru cevap: B) terrible
Açıklama: Cümlede pikniğin iptal edilip evde kalınma kararı var; bu ancak kötü hava için mantıklıdır. "sunny (güneşli)", "calm (sakin)", "warm (ılık)" ve "pleasant (hoş)" hep olumlu hava anlamı taşır ve iptal kararıyla çelişir. Yalnızca "terrible (berbat)" bağlama uyar.
2. Dilbilgisi (Grammar) Soruları
Dilbilgisi soruları zaman, kip, edat, bağlaç ve yapı bilginizi ölçer. Cümledeki zaman zarfları (yet, since, ago, already) ve yardımcı kelimeler doğru yapıyı işaret eder. Bu ipucu kelimeleri fark etmek çoğu soruyu tek başına çözer.
Örnek soru:
I ______ my homework yet, so I can't go out with you right now.
A) finish B) finished C) haven't finished D) don't finish E) wasn't finishing
Doğru cevap: C) haven't finished
Açıklama: "yet" kelimesi, olumsuz cümlede present perfect (have/has + V3) yapısıyla kullanılır ve "henüz bitmedi" anlamı verir. "so I can't go out" ifadesi de eylemin şu an hâlâ tamamlanmadığını gösterir. Bu nedenle doğru yapı "haven't finished"tir.
3. Cloze (Boşluk Doldurmalı Paragraf) Soruları
Cloze sorularında kısa bir paragrafta birden fazla boşluk bulunur; her boşluğu hem dilbilgisi hem anlam açısından uygun kelimeyle doldurmanız gerekir. Bütün paragrafı okuyup mantık akışını (sebep, sonuç, karşıtlık) takip etmek şarttır.
Örnek paragraf:
Recycling is important __(I)__ it helps protect the environment. When we recycle paper, we save trees and __(II)__ the amount of waste in nature.
(I) A) but B) because C) although D) unless E) so
(II) A) reduce B) increase C) waste D) spend E) buy
Doğru cevaplar: (I) B) because · (II) A) reduce
Açıklama: (I) Geri dönüşümün "önemli olması" ile "çevreyi koruması" arasında sebep ilişkisi vardır; bu yüzden "because (çünkü)" doğrudur. (II) Kâğıdı geri dönüştürmek atık miktarını azaltır; "reduce (azaltmak)" bağlama uyan tek seçenektir. "increase (artırmak)" anlamı ters çevirir.
4. Cümle ve Diyalog Tamamlama Soruları
Diyalog tamamlama sorularında iki kişinin konuşması verilir ve boş bırakılan yere en uygun, doğal ve kibar yanıtı bulmanız istenir. Konuşmanın tonunu ve mantıksal akışını (soru-cevap, öneri-yanıt) yakalamak anahtardır.
Örnek soru:
Anna: Would you like to join us for dinner tonight?
Tom: ______, but I already have plans with my family.
A) Yes, please B) I'd love to C) Not at all D) That's terrible E) I don't think so
Doğru cevap: B) I'd love to
Açıklama: Tom bir daveti kibarca reddediyor. "I'd love to, but..." (çok isterdim ama...) kalıbı, daveti nazikçe geri çevirmenin en doğal yoludur. "Not at all" ve "That's terrible" bağlama uymaz; "Yes, please" ise "but" ile başlayan bir mazeretle dilbilgisel olarak uyumsuzdur.
5. Kısa Okuma-Anlama Soruları
Kısa okuma sorularında birkaç cümlelik bir metin verilir ve metinden çıkarılabilecek doğru bilgiyi seçmeniz istenir. Cevap her zaman metne dayanmalıdır; kendi tahmininize göre değil, metnin söylediğine göre karar verin.
Örnek metin:
Maria is a nurse who works at a large hospital. She usually works at night and sleeps during the day. Although her job is very tiring, she loves helping people and never thinks about changing it.
Soru: What can we understand about Maria from the text?
A) She wants to find a new job.
B) She works during the day.
C) She enjoys her job despite its difficulties.
D) She lives far from the hospital.
E) She is planning to become a doctor.
Doğru cevap: C) She enjoys her job despite its difficulties.
"You should have told me about the meeting earlier."
A) I told you about the meeting on time.
B) You told me about the meeting too early.
C) It would have been better if you had informed me about the meeting sooner.
D) You must tell me about the meeting right now.
E) I didn't want to know about the meeting.
Doğru cevap: C)
Açıklama: "should have + V3" yapısı, geçmişte yapılmayan bir şey için pişmanlık veya eleştiri bildirir: "daha erken söylemeliydin (ama söylemedin)". Bu tam olarak "keşke daha erken haber verseydin" anlamına gelir (C). "must tell now" (D) geçmiş değil şimdiki zorunluluktur; "too early" (B) anlamı tersine çevirir.
A) We must arrive home after it starts raining.
B) We had to get home before it rained.
C) We must get home before it starts raining.
D) We should have got home before the rain.
E) We can get home when it starts raining.
Doğru cevap: C)
Açıklama: "varmalıyız" şimdiki bir zorunluluktur (must get home); "yağmaya başlamadan önce" ise "before it starts raining" ile karşılanır. A "after (sonra)" ile anlamı ters çevirir; B ve D geçmiş zamandır; E "when (-diğinde)" ile mantığı bozar. Zaman, kip ve anlamı birlikte koruyan tek seçenek C'dir.
Örnek soru (İngilizce → Türkçe):
Aşağıdaki cümlenin en uygun Türkçe çevirisi hangisidir?
"She has been learning German for three years."
A) Üç yıl önce Almanca öğrendi.
B) Üç yıldır Almanca öğreniyor.
C) Üç yıl boyunca Almanca öğrenecek.
D) Almancayı üç yılda öğrenmişti.
E) Üç yıldır Almanca öğretiyor.
Doğru cevap: B)
Açıklama: "has been learning ... for three years" yapısı, geçmişte başlayıp hâlâ süren bir eylemi anlatır: "üç yıldır öğreniyor" (B). A geçmiş bitmiş bir eylemdir; C gelecek zamandır; E ise "öğretiyor (teaching)" diyerek fiili değiştirir. Anlamı ve süreklilik vurgusunu koruyan seçenek B'dir.
8. Durumsal (Situational) Sorular
Durumsal sorular, günlük bir durum tarif eder ve o durumda söylenebilecek en uygun, en doğal ve kibar ifadeyi seçmenizi ister. Diyalog tamamlamaya benzer; ancak burada tam bir konuşma değil, bir senaryo verilir. Anahtar, durumun nezaket düzeyini ve amacını (rica, öneri, özür, teşekkür) doğru okumaktır.
Örnek soru:
You want to borrow a pen from your classmate politely. What do you say?
A) Give me your pen.
B) Could I borrow your pen, please?
C) I need a pen right now.
D) Where is your pen?
E) You must lend me a pen.
Doğru cevap: B)
Açıklama: Durum "kibarca kalem istemek" olduğundan, rica kalıbı olan "Could I ... , please?" en uygun ifadedir (B). "Give me" (A) ve "You must lend me" (E) emir kipidir ve kaba durur; C bir istek değil ihtiyaç bildirir; D ise kalemin yerini sorar, ödünç isteme amacını karşılamaz.

The best way to get to know the UDSP is to see the question types you will face in advance. Since the exam is entirely multiple choice, each question type has its own logic and traps. In this guide we introduce the main question types of the UDSP and, for each one, offer a worked example question in English with an explanation. The examples reflect the A2-B1 level; on the exam some questions may approach B1-B2.
TL;DR: The main question types on the UDSP: vocabulary, grammar, cloze (fill-in-the-blank paragraph), sentence/dialogue completion, short reading comprehension, restatement, translation (Turkish ↔ target language) and situational. Below is a worked example of each type.
1. Vocabulary Questions
Vocabulary questions ask you to choose the word that best fits the context of the sentence. The clues in the rest of the sentence (cause-effect, positive/negative tone) lead you to the right word. Key strategy: first grasp the general meaning of the sentence, then eliminate the options according to that meaning.
Example question:
The weather was so ______ that we decided to cancel our picnic and stay indoors.
A) sunny B) terrible C) calm D) warm E) pleasant
Correct answer: B) terrible
Explanation: The sentence involves the decision to cancel the picnic and stay home; this only makes sense for bad weather. "sunny," "calm," "warm" and "pleasant" all carry a positive weather meaning and contradict the decision to cancel. Only "terrible" fits the context.
2. Grammar Questions
Grammar questions measure your knowledge of tense, mood, prepositions, conjunctions and structure. The time adverbs in the sentence (yet, since, ago, already) and helper words point to the right structure. Noticing these clue words alone solves most questions.
Example question:
I ______ my homework yet, so I can't go out with you right now.
A) finish B) finished C) haven't finished D) don't finish E) wasn't finishing
Correct answer: C) haven't finished
Explanation: The word "yet" is used in a negative sentence with the present perfect (have/has + V3) and gives the meaning "not finished yet." The phrase "so I can't go out" also shows that the action is still not complete. Therefore the correct structure is "haven't finished."
3. Cloze (Fill-in-the-Blank Paragraph) Questions
In cloze questions there is a short paragraph with more than one blank; you must fill each blank with a word appropriate in both grammar and meaning. Reading the whole paragraph and following the flow of logic (cause, effect, contrast) is essential.
Example paragraph:
Recycling is important __(I)__ it helps protect the environment. When we recycle paper, we save trees and __(II)__ the amount of waste in nature.
(I) A) but B) because C) although D) unless E) so
(II) A) reduce B) increase C) waste D) spend E) buy
Correct answers: (I) B) because · (II) A) reduce
Explanation: (I) There is a cause relationship between recycling "being important" and its "protecting the environment"; that is why "because" is correct. (II) Recycling paper reduces the amount of waste; "reduce" is the only option that fits the context. "increase" would reverse the meaning.
4. Sentence and Dialogue Completion Questions
In dialogue completion questions, a conversation between two people is given and you are asked to find the most appropriate, natural and polite response for the blank. Grasping the tone of the conversation and its logical flow (question-answer, suggestion-response) is key.
Example question:
Anna: Would you like to join us for dinner tonight?
Tom: ______, but I already have plans with my family.
A) Yes, please B) I'd love to C) Not at all D) That's terrible E) I don't think so
Correct answer: B) I'd love to
Explanation: Tom is politely declining an invitation. The pattern "I'd love to, but..." is the most natural way to turn down an invitation gently. "Not at all" and "That's terrible" don't fit the context; "Yes, please" is grammatically incompatible with an excuse that begins with "but."
5. Short Reading Comprehension Questions
In short reading questions, a text of a few sentences is given and you are asked to select the correct information that can be drawn from the text. The answer must always be based on the text; decide according to what the text says, not according to your own guess.
Example text:
Maria is a nurse who works at a large hospital. She usually works at night and sleeps during the day. Although her job is very tiring, she loves helping people and never thinks about changing it.
Question: What can we understand about Maria from the text?
A) She wants to find a new job.
B) She works during the day.
C) She enjoys her job despite its difficulties.
D) She lives far from the hospital.
E) She is planning to become a doctor.
Correct answer: C) She enjoys her job despite its difficulties.
Explanation: The text says the job is "very tiring" but that Maria "loves helping people and never thinks about changing it." This means she loves her job despite its difficulties (C). "works during the day" (B) is wrong because she works at night; changing jobs or becoming a doctor (A, E) contradict the text.
6. Restatement Questions
In restatement questions a sentence is given and you are asked to find the option that restates it most closely without changing its meaning. Tense, mood and the main message must be preserved; options that contain similar words but shift the meaning are traps.
The shared rule of restatement and translationIn both types the correct answer preserves tense, mood and meaning together. The most common trap options shift the tense (past/future) or reverse the meaning with a similar-looking word.
Example question:
"You should have told me about the meeting earlier."
A) I told you about the meeting on time.
B) You told me about the meeting too early.
C) It would have been better if you had informed me about the meeting sooner.
D) You must tell me about the meeting right now.
E) I didn't want to know about the meeting.
Correct answer: C)
Explanation: The "should have + V3" structure expresses regret or criticism about something not done in the past: "you should have told me earlier (but you didn't)." This means exactly "I wish you had informed me sooner" (C). "must tell now" (D) is a present, not a past, obligation; "too early" (B) reverses the meaning.
7. Translation Questions
The UDSP contains a small number (typically a few) of translation questions. These questions ask you to choose the best translation of a sentence; they can be asked in both directions: from Turkish into the target language and from the target language into Turkish. The correct translation must preserve tense, mood and meaning. Trap options usually shift the tense (past/future) or use words that look similar but change the meaning.
Example question (Turkish → English):
Which is the most appropriate English translation of the following sentence?
"Yağmur yağmaya başlamadan önce eve varmalıyız."
A) We must arrive home after it starts raining.
B) We had to get home before it rained.
C) We must get home before it starts raining.
D) We should have got home before the rain.
E) We can get home when it starts raining.
Correct answer: C)
Explanation: "varmalıyız" is a present obligation (must get home); "yağmaya başlamadan önce" corresponds to "before it starts raining." A reverses the meaning with "after"; B and D are in the past tense; E breaks the logic with "when." The only option that preserves tense, mood and meaning together is C.
Example question (English → Turkish):
Which is the most appropriate Turkish translation of the following sentence?
"She has been learning German for three years."
A) Üç yıl önce Almanca öğrendi.
B) Üç yıldır Almanca öğreniyor.
C) Üç yıl boyunca Almanca öğrenecek.
D) Almancayı üç yılda öğrenmişti.
E) Üç yıldır Almanca öğretiyor.
Correct answer: B)
Explanation: The "has been learning ... for three years" structure describes an action that started in the past and is still continuing: "üç yıldır öğreniyor" (B). A is a completed past action; C is future tense; E changes the verb by saying "öğretiyor (teaching)." The option that preserves the meaning and the emphasis on continuity is B.
8. Situational Questions
Situational questions describe an everyday situation and ask you to choose the most appropriate, most natural and polite expression to use in that situation. They resemble dialogue completion; but here a full conversation is not given, rather a scenario. The key is to correctly read the politeness level and the purpose of the situation (request, suggestion, apology, thanks).
Example question:
You want to borrow a pen from your classmate politely. What do you say?
A) Give me your pen.
B) Could I borrow your pen, please?
C) I need a pen right now.
D) Where is your pen?
E) You must lend me a pen.
Correct answer: B)
Explanation: Since the situation is "politely asking for a pen," the request pattern "Could I ... , please?" is the most appropriate expression (B). "Give me" (A) and "You must lend me" (E) are imperative and sound rude; C states a need rather than a request; D asks where the pen is and does not serve the purpose of asking to borrow it.
Summary
Knowing the UDSP question types in advance saves time on the exam and protects you from traps. In vocabulary and grammar questions watch the context clues, in cloze the logic of the paragraph, in dialogue the tone, in reading fidelity to the text, in restatement and translation the preservation of meaning, and in situational questions the right politeness pattern.
