KısacaUDSP = MEB'in uluslararası diploma/sertifika programları (IB, AP, Abitur, A-Level) için düzenlediği yabancı dil yeterlilik sınavıdır. 8. sınıf, hazırlık, 9 ve 10. sınıf öğrencileri girer. Öğrenci İngilizce veya Almanca'dan birini seçer. Akademik ÜDS/YDS/YÖKDİL değildir; seviyesi A2-B1 ağırlıklıdır.
UDSP Nedir?
| AP (Advanced Placement) | ABD (College Board) | İngilizce |
| Abitur | Almanya | Almanca |
The UDSP, which stands for the Foreign Language Proficiency Exam for International Diploma and Certificate Programs, is an exam administered by the Ministry of National Education (MEB) to measure the English or German proficiency of students who wish to study in international programs such as IB, AP, Abitur and A-Level. In this guide we explain what the UDSP is, why it was introduced, who takes it and which international programs it is linked to. Note: participation requirements, dates and score details may be updated by MEB; verify the information from the most current official MEB announcements.
In shortUDSP = the foreign language proficiency exam that MEB administers for international diploma/certificate programs (IB, AP, Abitur, A-Level). Students in grade 8, the preparatory year, grade 9 and grade 10 take it. The student chooses either English or German. It is not the academic ÜDS/YDS/YÖKDİL; its level is mainly A2-B1.
What Is the UDSP?
The UDSP is a proficiency exam that certifies the foreign language level required to enter the international diploma and certificate programs offered at MEB-affiliated schools. In Turkey, some state schools and project schools offer their students internationally recognized programs (for example the IB Diploma, AP courses, the German Abitur system or the British A-Level). Because these programs are largely taught in a foreign language, students are expected to have a sufficient language level before starting the program. The UDSP is precisely the assessment tool that measures this language proficiency.
The most misunderstood aspect of the exam is its name. The UDSP is not the same as the ÜDS, YDS or YÖKDİL taken by university students and academic staff. Those exams measure language at an advanced academic level (reaching up to C1-C2). The UDSP, by contrast, is a school-language exam for middle- and high-school-age students, generally at the A2-B1 level (some questions may approach B1-B2).
Don't confuseThe UDSP is not the academic ÜDS / YDS / YÖKDİL. Those exams measure university-level language reaching up to C1-C2; the UDSP is an A2-B1-focused school-language exam for students around grades 8-10. Studying from the wrong source is the most common mistake.
Why Was the UDSP Introduced?
International programs expect students to follow the bulk of their courses in a foreign language. If a student is going to study Biology in English within the IB Diploma, or follow classes in German in the Abitur system, a basic language foundation must be in place before entering the program. Here the UDSP serves two functions at once:
- It provides a standard benchmark. Students from different schools are assessed with a single, common exam; this way, language level is documented objectively.
- It prepares the student for the program. A student who falls below the threshold can see their gaps before starting the program and focus on raising their language level.
In short, the UDSP is designed to safeguard the match between the language expectations of international programs and the student's actual level.
Who Takes the UDSP?
The following groups of students typically take the UDSP:
| Student group | Why the UDSP? |
| Grade 8 students | To document language proficiency for the transition to a high school/preparatory year offering an international program |
| Preparatory-year students | To prove their language level before actually starting the program |
| Grade 9 students | For entry into the IB/AP/Abitur/A-Level process |
| Grade 10 students | Students who choose their program late or want to update their score |
During the application, the student chooses the language in which they want to document proficiency (English or German) and takes the exam in that language only. Taking both languages at the same time is not possible; you prepare for them separately. If you are undecided about which language to choose, our English or German? guide will point the way.
The UDSP's Link to IB, AP, Abitur and A-Level
The very reason the UDSP exists is entry into these international programs. Each comes from the education model of a different country/institution:
| Program | Origin | Language expectation |
| IB (International Baccalaureate) Diploma | International (Switzerland-based) | Mostly English (German in some schools) |
| AP (Advanced Placement) | USA (College Board) | English |
| Abitur | Germany | German |
| A-Level | United Kingdom | English |
As you can see, Abitur generally requires German, while the others mostly require English proficiency. The student decides which language to take the UDSP in according to the program they are aiming for.
"Practical rule: the question "which program?" often also answers the question "which language?" — Abitur German, and IB / AP / A-Level mostly English.
The UDSP is an entry/proficiency exam; it does not replace the IB, AP, Abitur or A-Level's own final exams. Its purpose is to show whether the student has the language foundation needed to start these programs.
The General Framework of the UDSP Exam
The UDSP is a multiple-choice language exam. In broad terms, it has a structure of 50 questions, 5 options each (A-E), and 110 minutes; wrong answers do not cancel out correct ones, and the passing threshold is around 70 out of 100. The score is typically valid for 2 years.

There is no speaking or essay writing on the exam; however, in addition to vocabulary and grammar, there are also a few translation (Turkish ↔ target language, choosing the best translation) and situational questions; all are multiple choice. We examine the details of this structure in our Format and Scoring article; and you can see which types of questions appear, with worked examples, in our Question Types guide.
Summary
The UDSP is a foreign language proficiency exam organized by MEB for students about to step into international diploma and certificate programs. It is aimed at grade 8-10 and preparatory-year students, is taken in either English or German, and should not be confused with the academic YDS/YÖKDİL. For every student who wants to start their program with a solid language foundation, the UDSP is the first concrete step of the journey. Be sure to verify all official exam details (dates, application, threshold) from the current MEB announcements.
