Her öğrencinin dil düzeyi farklıdır.
- Program takvimini okuldan teyit edin.
The question "which grade should I take it in?" is one of the most confusing topics for students and parents when it comes to the UDSP. The exam is open to grade 8, preparatory-year, grade 9 and grade 10 students, and the fact that the score is valid for 2 years turns correct timing into a strategic decision. In this guide we cover the advantages of each grade level, how to use the 2-year validity, and how to determine the right time.
TL;DR: Grade 8, preparatory-year, grade 9 and grade 10 students take the UDSP. Since the score is valid for 2 years, for a student whose language level has reached A2-B1, taking it early (grade 8/preparatory year) secures the score and leaves a retake option. The timing should be determined not by grade level or the calendar, but by a practice exam.
Target Audience: Who Is the UDSP For?
The UDSP is for middle- and high-school-age students planning to enter an international program such as IB, AP, Abitur or A-Level. The typical groups who can take the exam and their reasons for choosing it are:
| Grade | Typical situation | Advantage |
| Grade 8 | Transition to a high school offering an international program | Early score, a long preparation horizon |
| Preparatory year | Documenting proficiency before starting the program | Preparation in sync with an intensive language period |
| Grade 9 | Students newly entering the program | More ready with a high-school language level |
| Grade 10 | Deciding late or updating the score | The most mature language level |
For details on what the UDSP is and which programs it provides entry to, you can look at our What Is the UDSP? article.
What Does the 2-Year Score Validity Mean?
The fact that the UDSP score is typically valid for 2 years is at the heart of timing strategy. Thanks to this validity, a student can take the exam early and "pocket" the score, then use it in a later program application. For example:
- A student who passes the threshold in grade 8 can use their score in an application in grade 9 (or even grade 10).
- A score obtained in the preparatory year secures in advance the proficiency certificate needed throughout the program.
- A student who takes it early and cannot pass the threshold can try again within the validity period and retake terms and improve their score.
The 2-year validity makes the "take it early, secure the score" strategy possible. However, make sure the program application in which you will use the score stays within the validity window; plan the dates together with your school's program coordinator.
Should You Take It Early or Wait?
This decision should be made by language level, not age. Since the UDSP is mainly A2-B1, a student who has reached this level can pass the threshold even in grade 8. When deciding, weigh both sides:
Golden ruleThe right time is determined by language level, not age. A student who has reached the A2-B1 level can pass the threshold even in grade 8; a student who hasn't may struggle even in grade 10.
| Taking it early (grade 8/preparatory year) | Waiting (grade 9-10) |
| + Secures the score early | + Language level is more mature |
| + Leaves a retake option if the threshold isn't passed | + Less stress, a more prepared start |
| − Language level may not yet be sufficient | − Time pressure may increase |
| − May require extra preparation | − Fewer attempt windows for the score |
The healthiest method: taking a practice exam. If the student solves a practice test in the real format (50 questions, 110 minutes) and sees how close they are to the ~70% threshold, the question "am I ready?" is answered with data rather than guesswork. If they are close to the threshold, taking it early makes sense; if they are far, it is safer to study a few more months and then take it. For a preparation plan, take a look at our How to Prepare? guide.

A Practical Roadmap for Timing
- Step 1: Clarify the target program and its language (English or German?).
- Step 2: Measure the current level with a practice exam.
- Step 3: If you are close to the threshold, plan to take it soon; if far, plan to study for 3-4 months and then take it.
- Step 4: Align the 2-year validity of the score with your program application calendar.
- Step 5: Verify official dates, application and requirements from MEB announcements.
"The right time is determined not by the calendar but by the data a practice test shows: align the 2-year validity of the score with your program application calendar.
Notes for Parents
In the UDSP process, the parent's role is not to put pressure on the student, but to support the right timing and consistency. A few practical suggestions:
- Base the decision on data. Instead of "the neighbor's child took it in grade 8," look at your own child's practice-test result. Every student's language level is different.
- Verify the program calendar with the school. Plan the 2-year validity of the score together with which year your child will apply to which program. The school program coordinator is the most reliable source.
- Provide consistency, don't impose intensity. 30-45 minutes of regular study a day is far more effective than a few days of intensive study before the exam.
- Position taking it early as an opportunity, not pressure. Since there is no penalty for wrong answers and a retake is available, the first attempt is a low-risk rehearsal.
As the student's language level and target program become clearer, the right grade and the right term become evident on their own. The parent's most valuable contribution is keeping this process calm and planned.
Summary
The UDSP is open to a wide range of students, from grade 8 to grade 10, and the 2-year validity of the score makes timing flexible. The right grade should be determined not by the calendar but by the language level shown by a practice exam. For a student whose language level is ready, taking it early secures the score while also leaving a retake option. Make your decision by considering the target program, language level and validity window together, and verify all official details from current MEB sources.
