IB Diploma Programı'nın çekirdeğindeki 4000 kelimelik bağımsız araştırma makalesi Extended Essay için ders ve konu seçiminden araştırma sorusuna, yapıdan 5 kriter (30 puan) değerlendirmeye ve RPF reflection sürecine ayrıntılı rehberler.
Detailed guides to the Extended Essay — the 4,000-word independent research paper at the core of the IB Diploma Programme — from subject and topic choice to the research question, from structure to the five-criteria (30-point) assessment and the RPF reflection process.
IB Diploma Programme'a başladığında karşına çıkan üç zorunlu "core" bileşenden biri Extended Essay (EE).
Theory of Knowledge: bilginin doğasını sorgulayan çekirdek bileşen.
The Extended Essay (EE) is one of the three compulsory "core" components you meet when you start the IB Diploma Programme. Together with the other two — Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and CAS — this trio forms the heart of the diploma. To define the Extended Essay in a single sentence: it is an independent academic research paper of roughly 4,000 words maximum, written in a subject area you choose and built around a research question you set yourself. In other words, this is not a composition assignment; it is a rehearsal for a small-scale university paper. When they first hear about it, most students panic — "How am I ever going to fill 4,000 words?" — yet a few months later the real challenge is not filling the word count but staying under the limit. This is completely normal.
An independent academic paper of ~4,000 words maximum, written around a research question of your own. A rehearsal for a small-scale university paper.
Theory of Knowledge: the core component that questions the nature of knowledge. It is assessed on the same matrix as the EE and adds bonus points to the diploma total.
Creativity, Activity, Service: out-of-class experience and reflection. It is not graded, but completing it is compulsory for the diploma.
The EE is not a single submission; it is a process that stretches over months. A supervisor (a mentor teacher) accompanies you, but you carry out the research yourself. Throughout the process you hold three compulsory reflection sessions with your supervisor and record them in an official document (the RPF); the written reflection is produced at the end as a single 500-word reflective statement. In the final stage there is a short closing interview called the viva voce, where your supervisor confirms that you conducted the process and you talk about what you learned.
The essay itself sits on a standard academic skeleton:
The EE is assessed externally and scored against defined assessment criteria. Broadly, these criteria measure the following axes: focus and method (the research question and approach), knowledge and understanding of the subject, critical thinking (analysis, argument, evaluation), presentation (formatting, consistency, citation order), and the personal engagement you bring to the process. The resulting letter grade runs from A to E.
The critical point is this: your EE grade does not stand on its own. It is assessed on a matrix together with TOK, and the two together contribute bonus points to the diploma total. So "I got a passing grade" is not enough; managing the EE and TOK well together directly affects your diploma. Another important warning: earning an E on the EE can, combined with TOK, pose a serious risk to the diploma; that is why the EE is never an "I'll deal with it later" task for any student.
Your EE grade does not stand on its own: it is assessed on a matrix together with TOK. Earning an E on the EE, when combined with TOK, can pose a serious risk to the diploma. That is why the EE is not a task to put off.
The best EEs come from those who start early. The road map I recommend:
In short: with the right question and early planning, the Extended Essay becomes manageable — even a process you enjoy. In the guides on this hub page we'll cover every step separately, from choosing a research question to citation techniques. No panic: work systematically, talk to your supervisor, and start early.
