İyi akademik yazı iyi cümlelerin toplamı değildir; fikirlerin okunabilir bir mimariyle dizilmesidir. İki kavram bunu sağlar: coherence (fikirlerin mantıklı akışı — büyük resim) ve cohesion (cümleleri birbirine bağlayan dilbilgisel dokular — bağlantı sözcükleri, zamirler, tekrar). Aşağıda önce makalenin iskeletini, sonra bağ araçlarını görüyorsun.
Good academic writing is not the sum of good sentences; it is ideas arranged into a readable architecture. Two concepts make this possible: coherence (the logical flow of ideas — the big picture) and cohesion (the grammatical fabric that ties sentences together — linking words, pronouns, repetition). Below you first see the skeleton of the essay, then the tools that bind it together.
In academic writing, a good text is not a random collection of correct sentences; it is ideas connected within a readable order. The reader of academic English expects information in a particular sequence and with particular linking signals. A text that fails to meet this expectation is perceived as "disorganized" or "disjointed," even if its sentences are flawless. In the writing sections of exams such as IELTS, TOEFL and YDS, and in university assignments, this dimension is scored directly.
Two concepts provide this order. Coherence deals with the big picture: do the ideas flow in a logical sequence, does every paragraph serve the thesis? Cohesion deals with the small scale: are the sentences joined by grammatical fabric — conjunctions, pronouns, repetition, synonymy? The two work together: without coherence, cohesion is empty decoration; without cohesion, coherence is a series of jumps that strains the reader. On this page we first examine the skeleton of the text, then the linking tools and sub-topics that hold it together.
Bir akademik makale, tahmin edilebilir bir iskelete oturur: giriş, gövde paragrafları ve sonuç. Bu öngörülebilirlik bir kısıt değil, bir avantajdır; okur nereye bakacağını bildiği için fikirlere odaklanabilir. Aşağıdaki şema, her bölümün görevini gösterir.
An academic essay rests on a predictable skeleton: introduction, body paragraphs and conclusion. This predictability is not a constraint but an advantage; because the reader knows where to look, they can focus on the ideas. The diagram below shows the job of each part. Once you grasp the skeleton, planning your own text by first breaking it into these blocks is the most effective antidote to disorganized writing.
If a paragraph carries more than one main idea, split it. From the first sentence of each paragraph, the reader should know what they are about to read.
The introduction and conclusion work symmetrically with the body: the introduction narrows from the general to the specific to arrive at the thesis, while the conclusion opens from the specific to the general to reach an implication. Giving new information in the conclusion is a common mistake; the conclusion only gathers up what has been said and reinforces the thesis one last time. Building these two framing paragraphs well leaves the reader with the feeling of having "read a unified text."
| Coherence | Cohesion | |
|---|---|---|
| Ölçek | Bütün metin — mantık akışı | Cümleden cümleye — dilbilgisel bağ |
| Soru | Fikirler mantıklı sırada mı? | Cümleler birbirine bağlanıyor mu? |
| Araç | Planlama, paragraf sırası, tez | Bağlaç, zamir, tekrar, eş anlam |
| Bozulursa | "Dağınık, takip edilemiyor" | "Kopuk, sıçramalı" |
Her cümle bilinen bilgiyle başlayıp yeni bilgiyle bitmelidir. Bu "bilgi akışı" metni doğal biçimde bağdaşık kılar.
These two terms are often confused, but their differences are clear and you need to think of them separately when evaluating writing. Coherence looks at the whole text: are the ideas woven in a logical order and around a single main claim? Cohesion looks at the surface, at the links between sentences: is the transition from one sentence to the next smooth? A text can be strong in cohesion (plenty of connectors) but weak in coherence (scattered ideas) — or the reverse. The best writing achieves both. The table below sums up the difference at a glance.
| Coherence | Cohesion | |
|---|---|---|
| Scale | The whole text — the flow of logic | Sentence to sentence — grammatical linking |
| Question | Are the ideas in a logical order? | Are the sentences linked to each other? |
| Tool | Planning, paragraph order, thesis | Connectors, pronouns, repetition, synonymy |
| When it breaks | "Disorganized, hard to follow" | "Disjointed, jumpy" |
Each sentence should begin with known information and end with new information. This "flow of information" makes the text naturally cohesive.
Cohesion'ı somut olarak nasıl kurarsın? Dört temel araçla. Bunları dengeli kullanmak, metni hem bağlı hem de tekrardan uzak tutar. Yalnızca geçiş sözcüklerine yaslanmak yapaylaştırır; gönderim, sözcüksel zincir ve nominalization ile birlikte kullanmak ise doğal bir akış yaratır.
Fikirler arası ilişkiyi işaretler.
however, therefore, in additionZamir/işaret ile tekrarı önler.
this approach, they, such methodsEş/üst anlam ile konuyu sürdürür.
car → vehicle → itÖnceki cümleyi isim olarak paketler.
…prices rose. This increase…How do you build cohesion concretely? With four basic tools. Using them in balance keeps the text both connected and free of repetition. Leaning only on transition words makes it artificial; using them together with reference, lexical chains and nominalization creates a natural flow.
Signal the relationship between ideas.
however, therefore, in additionAvoid repetition with pronouns/demonstratives.
this approach, they, such methodsSustain the topic with synonyms/superordinates.
car → vehicle → itPackage the previous sentence as a noun.
…prices rose. This increase…Dilbilimde bağdaşıklık, yalnızca "bağlaç kullanmak" değildir; cümleleri birbirine bağlayan birkaç farklı mekanizma vardır. Bu türleri tanımak, hem yazını çeşitlendirir hem de tekrara düşmeden akıcı metinler kurmanı sağlar.
Zamir ve işaret sözcükleriyle daha önce geçen bir şeye atıf. Tekrarı önler.
The theory… It… This approach…Bir sözcüğü tekrar etmek yerine kısa bir karşılık koymak.
I need a pen. — Take this one.Bağlamdan anlaşılan bir öğeyi düşürmek; okur boşluğu doldurur.
She can swim; he can't [swim].Geçiş sözcükleriyle mantıksal ilişki kurmak.
however, therefore, in additionEş/üst anlam ve tekrarla konuyu sürdürmek.
car → vehicle → the machineBu beş mekanizma iç içe kullanılır.
In linguistics, cohesion is not just "using connectors"; there are several different mechanisms that link sentences together. Recognizing these types both diversifies your writing and lets you build fluent texts without falling into repetition.
Referring to something mentioned earlier with pronouns and demonstratives. Avoids repetition.
The theory… It… This approach…Placing a short substitute instead of repeating a word.
I need a pen. — Take this one.Dropping an element understood from context; the reader fills the gap.
She can swim; he can't [swim].Establishing a logical relationship with transition words.
however, therefore, in additionSustaining the topic with synonyms/superordinates and repetition.
car → vehicle → the machineThese five mechanisms are used together. In a good academic paragraph you can see all of them at once: a concept enters first by its full name, is then sustained by a pronoun (reference), varied with a synonym (lexical) and linked to the next sentence with a connector (conjunction). Experienced writers do this without realizing it; you can reach the same fluency through conscious practice. Turkish students often lean only on the conjunction mechanism and neglect the other four; yet real fluency comes from blending all five types in balance. In the next paragraph you write, deliberately try to use at least three different linking types.
Geçiş sözcükleri, fikirler arasındaki mantıksal ilişkiyi okura işaretler. Doğru bağlaç, iki cümle arasındaki bağın türünü — ekleme mi, zıtlık mı, sonuç mu — bir bakışta gösterir. Aşağıdaki tablo en çok kullanılan bağlaçları işlevlerine göre gruplar.
| İlişki | Geçiş Sözcükleri | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| Ekleme | moreover, in addition, furthermore, also | The plan is costly. Moreover, it is slow. |
| Zıtlık | however, nevertheless, on the other hand, whereas | It is cheap; however, it is fragile. |
| Sonuç | therefore, thus, consequently, as a result | Demand fell; therefore, prices dropped. |
| Sebep | because, since, as, due to | Sales rose because prices fell. |
| Örnek | for example, for instance, such as | Some metals, for example gold, resist rust. |
| Özet / sonuç | in conclusion, to sum up, overall | In conclusion, the evidence is clear. |
Bazı bağlaçlar günlük, bazıları resmîdir. Akademik yazıda so yerine therefore, but yerine however, and yerine in addition tercih edilir. Detay için Linking Words.
Bağlaçların cümledeki yerine ve noktalamasına da dikkat et. However gibi cümle bağlayıcılar genellikle cümlenin başında yer alır ve ardından virgül gelir; iki bağımsız cümleyi tek cümlede birleştirirken önlerine noktalı virgül konur: The method is fast; however, it is expensive. Because ve although gibi bağlaçlar ise bir yan cümle başlatır ve farklı bir noktalama mantığı ister. Bu incelikler, akademik yazıda "ileri seviye" izlenimi bırakan detaylardır.
Transition words signal the logical relationship between ideas to the reader. The right connector shows at a glance the type of link between two sentences — is it addition, contrast, or result? The table below groups the most-used connectors by function.
| Relationship | Transition Words | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Addition | moreover, in addition, furthermore, also | The plan is costly. Moreover, it is slow. |
| Contrast | however, nevertheless, on the other hand, whereas | It is cheap; however, it is fragile. |
| Result | therefore, thus, consequently, as a result | Demand fell; therefore, prices dropped. |
| Cause | because, since, as, due to | Sales rose because prices fell. |
| Example | for example, for instance, such as | Some metals, for example gold, resist rust. |
| Summary / conclusion | in conclusion, to sum up, overall | In conclusion, the evidence is clear. |
Some connectors are everyday, some are formal. In academic writing, therefore is preferred over so, however over but, and in addition over and. For detail, see Linking Words.
Pay attention also to a connector's position in the sentence and its punctuation. Sentence connectors such as however usually stand at the start of the sentence and are followed by a comma; when joining two independent clauses into one sentence, a semicolon is placed before them: The method is fast; however, it is expensive. Connectors such as because and although, on the other hand, begin a subordinate clause and require a different punctuation logic. These subtleties are the details that leave an "advanced" impression in academic writing.
This essay argues that remote work boosts productivity but weakens team cohesion. Belirsiz bir tez (This essay is about remote work) okuru yönsüz bırakır.
Prices rose sharply. This increase alarmed investors.
(cohesion) diye iki turda oku.
Akademik yazıda okuru yönlendiren "yol işaretleri" (signposting) metnin nereye gittiğini önceden haber verir: This essay will first… then… finally… ya da Having discussed X, we now turn to Y. Bu ifadeler coherence'ı görünür kılar. Detay için Signposting ve Paragraph Structure.
Paragraph Structure. A good academic paragraph handles a single idea and usually consists of three layers: the topic sentence (the first sentence that clearly states the main idea), support (explanation, example, evidence, citation) and link (a closing that ties the idea to the thesis or transitions to the next paragraph). From the first sentence of each paragraph, the reader should be able to tell what that paragraph will discuss. If a paragraph carries two main ideas, it should be split. This three-part structure is often taught with acronyms like "PEEL" (Point, Evidence, Explanation, Link); whatever it is called, the logic is the same: put forward a claim, support it with evidence, explain the evidence, and tie the idea to the whole text.
Thesis Statement. The thesis statement is the sentence at the end of the introduction that sums up the main claim of the whole piece in a single sentence. A good thesis statement both takes a clear position and gives the roadmap of the piece. This essay argues that remote work boosts productivity but weakens team cohesion. A vague thesis (This essay is about remote work) leaves the reader without direction.
A good thesis statement (1) takes an arguable position — not a fact everyone accepts; (2) is focused — bound to a single main claim, not scattered; (3) gives a roadmap — the reader senses in what order the body paragraphs will handle what. A sentence that meets all three holds up the whole essay.
Nominalization. One of the distinctive features of academic English: turning a verb or an entire sentence into a noun to "package" the previous idea and carry it into the new sentence. Prices rose sharply. This increase alarmed investors. Here the verb rose turns into the noun increase, both establishing a link and making the text denser and more objective. Overdoing it, however, weighs the text down.
Cohesion & Coherence together. Although these two can be studied separately, they are evaluated together. You build coherence in the planning stage (order of ideas, paragraph arrangement, thesis); you weave cohesion while writing and revising (connectors, pronouns, lexical chains). When revising a text, read it in two passes: first "are the ideas in a logical order?" (coherence), then "do the sentences connect smoothly?" (cohesion).
In academic writing, "signposts" that guide the reader announce in advance where the text is going: This essay will first… then… finally… or Having discussed X, we now turn to Y. These expressions make coherence visible. For detail, see Signposting and Paragraph Structure.
Her cümleye moreover, furthermore eklemek bağdaşıklık yaratmaz, yapaylaştırır. Bağlaç ancak gerçek bir ilişki varsa kullanılır.
Girişte net bir iddia yoksa okuyucu yönünü kaybeder. Bkz. Thesis Statement.
Zıtlık yokken however, sonuç yokken therefore kullanma. Doğru bağlaç için Linking Words ve Signposting.
Bir zamir hangi isme gönderdiği belirsizse okur takılır. The manager told the client that he was wrong — kim yanlıştı? Belirsizse zamir yerine ismi tekrar et: …that the client was wrong.
İki bağımsız cümle sadece virgülle birleştirilemez. The results were poor, we repeated the test. Doğrusu: nokta, noktalı virgül ya da bağlaç kullan — The results were poor; therefore, we repeated the test.
Aynı anahtar kavramı her cümlede farklı bir eş anlamlıyla anmak, okuru "bunlar aynı şey mi, farklı mı?" diye kuşkuya düşürür. Akademik yazıda teknik terimi tutarlı tekrarlamak, süslü çeşitlemeden daha nettir: bir çalışmada method dediysen sürekli method de; onu approach, technique, procedure diye gereksiz döndürme.
Güçlü metinler paragrafı bir sonrakine bağlar. Paragrafın son cümlesi, gelecek paragrafın konusuna hafif bir işaret bırakırsa geçiş pürüzsüz olur; okur yeni bir başlığa değil, aynı düşüncenin devamına girdiğini hisseder.
Adding moreover, furthermore to every sentence does not create cohesion, it makes it artificial. A connector is used only when a genuine relationship exists.
If there is no clear claim in the introduction, the reader loses direction. See Thesis Statement.
Don't use however when there is no contrast, or therefore when there is no result. For the right connector, see Linking Words and Signposting.
If it is unclear which noun a pronoun refers to, the reader stumbles. The manager told the client that he was wrong — who was wrong? If it is ambiguous, repeat the noun instead of the pronoun: …that the client was wrong.
Two independent clauses cannot be joined by a comma alone. The results were poor, we repeated the test. Correct: use a period, a semicolon or a conjunction — The results were poor; therefore, we repeated the test.
Naming the same key concept with a different synonym in every sentence makes the reader wonder "are these the same thing or different?" In academic writing, repeating a technical term consistently is clearer than fancy variation: if you called it method in a study, keep saying method; don't needlessly rotate it as approach, technique, procedure.
Strong texts link a paragraph to the next. If the last sentence of a paragraph leaves a slight hint of the next paragraph's topic, the transition becomes smooth; the reader feels they are entering not a new heading but the continuation of the same thought.
…prices. These prices…Önce coherence turu (fikir sırası, tez), sonra cohesion turu (bağlaç, zamir, tekrar) yap.
Cohesion develops not through memorizing rules but through the read-write-revise cycle. The approach below raises both your writing score and your reading speed:
In a good academic paragraph, mark the topic sentence, support and link sentences in colors; see the skeleton.
topic → support → linkGroup each connector by function (addition, contrast, result) and use it only when a genuine relationship exists.
contrast → however / whereasBegin each sentence with known information, end with new information; restart the next sentence from that new information.
…prices. These prices…First a coherence pass (order of ideas, thesis), then a cohesion pass (connectors, pronouns, repetition).
macro → microRemember: cohesion is won mostly in the revision stage. In the first draft it is enough to get the ideas down on paper; the real craft comes from polishing that draft on a second and third reading — tightening its links, replacing needless repetitions with synonyms and strengthening weak transitions. Rereading your own texts a few days later "as if you were a foreign reader" is the most effective way to spot the disconnections.
