Nominalization, en yalın hâliyle, bir eylemi ya da niteliği bir nesne gibi ele alma sanatıdır. Normalde The government decided to raise taxes deriz; burada decide bir fiildir, bir eylemi anlatır. Adlaştırma yaptığımızda ise aynı fikri The government's decision to raise taxes hâline getiririz. Artık "karar" bir eylem değil, elimizde tutabileceğimiz, hakkında konuşabileceğimiz bir şeydir. İşte akademik yazının bütün ağırlığı bu dönüşümde saklıdır.
Peki bu neden var? Çünkü fikirleri isme çevirince onları üst üste yığabilirsiniz. Bir fiil cümle ister, özne ister, çekim ister; bir isim ise başka bir cümlenin içine sızabilir. The economy grew rapidly, and this worried analysts yerine The economy's rapid growth worried analysts diyebilirsiniz. İki cümlelik bilgi tek cümleye sığdı. Akademik metin tam da bu yoğunluğu sever: az sözcükte çok fikir.
Türkçede bu size hiç yabancı değil. Türkçe zaten ustaca adlaştıran bir dildir: -me/-ma, -iş, -lik ekleri sürekli fiili isme çevirir.
Nominalization, at its simplest, is the art of treating an action or a quality like an object. Normally we say The government decided to raise taxes; here decide is a verb, describing an action. When we nominalize, we turn the same idea into The government's decision to raise taxes. Now "decision" is no longer an action but a thing we can hold and talk about. The entire weight of academic writing is hidden in this transformation.
So why does this exist? Because once you turn ideas into nouns you can stack them on top of each other. A verb demands a clause, a subject, a conjugation; a noun can slip inside another clause. Instead of The economy grew rapidly, and this worried analysts you can say The economy's rapid growth worried analysts. Two sentences' worth of information fit into one. Academic text loves exactly this density: much thought in few words.
This is not at all foreign to you in Turkish. Turkish is already a language that nominalizes masterfully: the suffixes -me/-ma, -iş, -lik constantly turn verbs into nouns. Instead of "karar vermek" we say "kararı", instead of "büyümek" "büyümesi", instead of "gelmek" "gelişi". The sentence "Ekonominin hızlı büyümesi analistleri kaygılandırdı" is a complete nominalization. So you already know the logic; what you need to learn is which suffixes and patterns English uses to do it.
The reason it feels difficult is this: in English nominalization is not just adding a suffix. The whole architecture of the sentence changes. When a verb becomes a noun, the subject attached to that verb is linked with of or the possessive ('s), the object again comes with of, and the tense information is often lost. Managing these three changes at once challenges the B2 student. Moreover when to use it requires a separate mastery: if you turn every verb into a noun your text becomes heavy as stone. That is why nominalization is not a grammar rule but a matter of stylistic balance.
- Adlaştırma = fiili veya sıfatı isme çevirmek: decide → decision, happy → happiness.
- Amacı üç tanedir: yoğunluk (bilgiyi sıkıştırma), nesnellik (faili gizleme) ve bağdaşıklık (fikri geri-gönderme).
- En yaygın ekler: -tion, -ment, -ance/-ence, -al, -ure, -ness, -ity, -th.
- Pek çok kelime ek almadan hem fiil hem isimdir: increase, change, rise, use, focus, need.
- Fiil isme dönünce özne ve nesne genellikle of ya da iyelik ('s) ile bağlanır: the destruction of the forest.
- Adlaştırma akademik/formal register'ın imzasıdır; günlük konuşmada abartısı yapay durur. Bkz. Akademik Register.
- Bağdaşıklık numarası: önceki cümledeki fikri isimleştirip yeni cümlenin öznesi yapın (This decision...).
- Tehlike: aşırı adlaştırma metni soyut, ağır ve okunması zor yapar; canlı yazı fiil ister.
- Adlaştırılmış cümlelerde çoğu zaman zaman ve fail bilgisi kaybolur; bu bazen istenir, bazen belirsizlik yaratır.
- İyi yazar, adlaştırmayı bir araç gibi kullanır: gerektiğinde açar, gerektiğinde fiile geri döner.
- Nominalization = turning a verb or adjective into a noun: decide → decision, happy → happiness.
- It has three purposes: density (compressing information), objectivity (hiding the agent) and cohesion (referring an idea back).
- The most common suffixes: -tion, -ment, -ance/-ence, -al, -ure, -ness, -ity, -th.
- Many words are both verb and noun without any suffix: increase, change, rise, use, focus, need.
- When a verb becomes a noun the subject and object are usually linked with of or the possessive ('s): the destruction of the forest.
- Nominalization is the signature of academic/formal register; overdone in everyday speech it sounds artificial. See Academic Register.
- The cohesion trick: nominalize the idea in the previous sentence and make it the subject of the new one (This decision...).
- Danger: excessive nominalization makes the text abstract, heavy and hard to read; lively writing needs verbs.
- In nominalized sentences tense and agent information are often lost; this is sometimes desired, sometimes creates ambiguity.
- A good writer uses nominalization like a tool: unpacking it when needed, returning to the verb when needed.
Fiilden isme (ek)
decide → decision · develop → development — en verimli yol.
Sıfattan isme (ek)
aware → awareness · able → ability — niteliği bir şeye çevirir.
Sıfır ek
increase · change · rise · use — biçim değişmeden hem fiil hem isim.
Formül: the/a + fiil-biçimi + of/in.
| Fiil cümlesi | Adlaştırılmış öbek | Bağlanma yolu |
|---|---|---|
| The enemy destroyed the city | the enemy's destruction of the city | Fail = 's, Nesne = of |
| Sales declined | the decline in sales | Konu = in |
| Scientists discovered a vaccine | the scientists' discovery of a vaccine | Fail = ', Nesne = of |
| The population grew | the growth of the population | Özne = of |
Verb to noun (suffix)
decide → decision · develop → development — the most productive route.
Adjective to noun (suffix)
aware → awareness · able → ability — turns a quality into a thing.
Zero suffix
increase · change · rise · use — both verb and noun without any change of form.
1. Verb to noun: deriving with a suffix
The most common route is to add a suffix to the verb. English's main nominalization suffixes are the following, and each has its own flavour. Formula: Verb root + suffix → Noun.
2. Adjective to noun
Adjectives also become nouns; this lets us treat a quality like a thing. Formula: Adjective + -ness/-ity/-ce/-th → Noun.
3. Zero suffix (the same form is both verb and noun)
English's most practical feature: many words become both verb and noun without changing at all. These are the smoothest nominalizations in academic writing because they sound natural. Formula: the/a + verb-form + of/in.
| Verb clause | Nominalized phrase | Way of linking |
|---|---|---|
| The enemy destroyed the city | the enemy's destruction of the city | Agent = 's, Object = of |
| Sales declined | the decline in sales | Topic = in |
| Scientists discovered a vaccine | the scientists' discovery of a vaccine | Agent = ', Object = of |
| The population grew | the growth of the population | Subject = of |
Nesnellik. Edilgen çatı gibi çalışır ama daha yoğundur.
3. Bağdaşıklık: fikri geri-gönderip yeni özne yapma
Bu, C1 seviyesini B2'den ayıran en güçlü kullanımdır. Önceki cümlede anlattığınız bütün bir fikri bir isme paketleyip yeni cümlenin öznesi yaparsınız. Genellikle this / such / the ile başlar. Metni bir zincir gibi birbirine bağlar; bkz. Bağdaşıklık & Tutarlılık.
4. Başlık ve gazetecilik dili
Gazete başlıkları ve raporlar yerden tasarruf için adlaştırmaya bayılır. Fiilin yerini kısa bir isim alır.
1. Condensing information (reducing two sentences to one)
The primary function of nominalization is to compress information. What you would say in two separate sentences you bury into a single noun phrase. This explains why academic text feels so 'full'.
2. Objectivity: pushing the agent into the background
Nominalization is the most elegant way to describe an action without saying who did it. This is critical for the objective tone of academic writing; see Objectivity. It works like the passive voice but is more dense.
3. Cohesion: referring an idea back and making it the new subject
This is the most powerful use that separates C1 from B2. You package a whole idea from the previous sentence into a noun and make it the subject of the new sentence. It usually begins with this / such / the. It links the text together like a chain; see Cohesion & Coherence.
4. Headlines and journalistic language
Newspaper headlines and reports love nominalization to save space. A short noun takes the place of the verb.
Adlaştırma sadece bir biçim değişikliği değildir; anlamı ve bakış açısını da değiştirir. Bir fiili isme çevirdiğinizde, o eylemi zamandan ve failden koparıp donmuş bir 'kavram' hâline getirirsiniz. Bu, çok güçlü ama aynı zamanda tehlikeli bir harekettir.
Fiil
Akan, dinamik bir olay: prices are rising — okur eylemi gözünün önünde yaşar.Adlaştırma
Donuk bir fotoğraf: the rise in prices — eylem artık bir olgu, üzerine tartışılan bir veri.Zaman ve fail bilgisi kaybolur
Bu kayıp bazen tam da istediğiniz şeydir (nesnellik), bazen ise bir kaçamaktır. Politikacılar ve kurumlar sorumluluktan kaçmak için sıkça adlaştırma kullanır: Mistakes were made yerine There were failures in oversight demek, kimsenin adını anmadan hatayı kabul etmiş gibi görünmenin yoludur. İyi bir okur bu retorik oyunu fark eder.
Yoğunluk ile okunabilirlik arasındaki denge
Her adlaştırma metne biraz ağırlık katar. Bir cümlede bir-iki adlaştırma bilgi yoğunluğu verir; ama arka arkaya beş tane, cümleyi soyut bir bulamaca çevirir. Usta yazar, somut isimlerle soyut adlaştırmaları dengeler ve gerektiğinde canlı bir fiile geri döner.
Nominalization is not just a change of form; it also changes meaning and perspective. When you turn a verb into a noun, you cut that action off from time and agent and turn it into a frozen 'concept'. This is a very powerful but also dangerous move.
Verb
A flowing, dynamic event: prices are rising — the reader experiences the action before their eyes.Nominalization
A still photograph: the rise in prices — the action is now a fact, a datum to be argued about.Tense and agent information is lost
This loss is sometimes exactly what you want (objectivity), but sometimes an evasion. Politicians and institutions often use nominalization to escape responsibility: saying There were failures in oversight instead of Mistakes were made is a way of appearing to admit the error without naming anyone. A good reader notices this rhetorical game.
The balance between density and readability
Every nominalization adds a little weight to the text. One or two nominalizations in a sentence give information density; but five in a row turn the sentence into an abstract mush. The master writer balances abstract nominalizations with concrete nouns and returns to a lively verb when needed.
İyi haber: Türkçe zaten yoğun bir adlaştıran dildir. -me/-ma (mastar), -iş/-uş, -lik/-lık, -me ekleri sürekli fiili isme çevirir. "Karar vermesi", "büyümesi", "gelişi", "reddedişi", "farkındalık" — hepsi adlaştırmadır. Yani kavram size hiç yabancı değil. Zorluk, Türkçenin ekleri ile İngilizcenin ekleri örtüşmediği ve bağlanma mantığının farklı olduğu yerdedir.
Türkçe
İyelik zinciriyle: hükümet-in karar-ı. Fail tamlayan ekiyle (-in) net kalır; sıra fail → isim.İngilizce
Hem 's hem of: the government's decision. Fail önde iyelikle, nesne arkada of ile.- Türkçe adlaştırmayı iyelik zinciriyle yapar: "hükümet-in karar-ı". İngilizce ise hem 's hem of kullanır ve sıra terstir: "the government's decision".
- Türkçede fail çoğu zaman -in/-nin (tamlayan) ekiyle net kalır; İngilizcede fail 'of' ile bağlanınca nesneyle karışabilir ("the shooting of the hunters" = avcıları mı vurdu, avcılar mı vurdu?).
- Türkçede -me mastarı hem fiil-benzeri hem isim gibi çalışır ve çok esnektir; İngilizcede -ing (gerund) ile -tion (tam isim) arasında anlam farkı vardır: the building of the house (süreç) vs. the building (nesne).
Good news: Turkish is already a heavily nominalizing language. The suffixes -me/-ma (infinitive), -iş/-uş, -lik/-lık, -me constantly turn verbs into nouns. "Karar vermesi", "büyümesi", "gelişi", "reddedişi", "farkındalık" — all are nominalizations. So the concept is not foreign to you at all. The difficulty lies where Turkish suffixes and English suffixes do not overlap and where the logic of linking differs.
Turkish
With a possessive chain: hükümet-in karar-ı. The agent stays clear with the genitive suffix (-in); the order is agent → noun.English
Both 's and of: the government's decision. The agent in front with the possessive, the object behind with of.- Turkish forms nominalization with a possessive chain: "hükümet-in karar-ı". English, however, uses both 's and of, and the order is reversed: "the government's decision".
- In Turkish the agent usually stays clear with the -in/-nin (genitive) suffix; in English, when the agent is linked with 'of' it can be confused with the object ("the shooting of the hunters" = did someone shoot the hunters, or did the hunters shoot?).
- In Turkish the -me infinitive works both verb-like and noun-like and is very flexible; in English there is a meaning difference between -ing (gerund) and -tion (a full noun): the building of the house (process) vs. the building (object).
| Yapı | Ne yapar | Örnek | Fark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominalization | Fiili/sıfatı TAM isme çevirir | the decision to leave | Sonuç çekim almayan bir isimdir; başına 'the/a' alır. |
| Gerund (-ing) | Fiili isim-benzeri yapar ama fiil enerjisini korur | Deciding quickly is hard. | Gerund nesne alabilir ve zarfla nitelenir; 'the' almaz. |
| Edilgen çatı (Passive) | Faili gizler ama fiil olarak kalır | The city was destroyed. | Adlaştırma daha yoğundur; edilgen bir cümledir, adlaştırma bir isimdir. Bkz. Nesnellik |
| Sıfat-isim öbeği | Niteliği isme ekler | economic growth | Burada 'growth' zaten adlaştırma; sıfat sadece niteler. |
| Structure | What it does | Example | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nominalization | Turns a verb/adjective into a FULL noun | the decision to leave | The result is a noun that takes no conjugation; it takes 'the/a' before it. |
| Gerund (-ing) | Makes the verb noun-like but keeps the verb's energy | Deciding quickly is hard. | A gerund can take an object and be modified by an adverb; it does not take 'the'. |
| Passive voice (Passive) | Hides the agent but stays a verb | The city was destroyed. | Nominalization is denser; the passive is a clause, nominalization is a noun. See Objectivity |
| Adjective-noun phrase | Adds a quality to the noun | economic growth | Here 'growth' is already a nominalization; the adjective only modifies it. |
Fiili olduğu gibi ismin yerine koymak: the develop, the decide, a grow. Bir ismin geleceği yerde (the/a/his/'s sonrası) önce fiili isimleştirin.
Putting the verb as-is in place of the noun: the develop, the decide, a grow. Where a noun should go (after the/a/his/'s), nominalize the verb first.
Adlaştırma büyük ölçüde düzenlidir ama İngilizcenin köklü kelimeleri sürprizlerle doludur. Ekler her zaman tahmin edilebilir değildir ve bazı isimler kökten farklı biçim alır.
Nominalization is largely regular, but English's ancient words are full of surprises. The suffixes are not always predictable, and some nouns take a radically different form.
Adlaştırma akademik yazının aracıdır ama günlük İngilizcede de belli kalıplarda yaşar. Gündelik konuşmada aşırı adlaştırma yapay ve soğuk durur; İngilizler günlük dilde çoğu zaman fiile döner. Yine de bazı adlaştırmalar konuşmada tamamen doğaldır.
Nominalization is the tool of academic writing, but it also lives in certain patterns of everyday English. In casual conversation, excessive nominalization sounds artificial and cold; in everyday language English speakers usually return to the verb. Still, some nominalizations are completely natural in speech.
Adlaştırma, akademik register'ın imzasıdır; bkz. Akademik Register.
This caused Y.") ilkini isimleştirip birleştirin: "This X led to Y." Bağdaşıklık ve sözcük çeşitliliği bandını yükseltir — ama paragrafta 2-3 kez yeter; doğallık da aranır.
- transition, recognition, combustion, warming, intensification — art arda adlaştırmalar akademik yoğunluk yaratır.
- 'This warming, in turn, has led to...' — önceki cümlenin fikri (warming) isimleşip yeni öznenin köprüsü oldu: bağdaşıklık.
- 'the identification of these links' — bütün bir önceki fikir (bağlantıların bulunması) tek isim öbeğine paketlendi.
- Fail neredeyse hiç yok: kömürü kim yakıyor, politikayı kim uyguluyor söylenmiyor — nesnellik.
- 'the adoption of solar and wind technology requires investment' — fiil cümlesi (ülkeler benimsediğinde) isim öznesine dönüştü.
- Metin yine de fiillerle nefes alıyor (has become, produces, faces, requires); saf adlaştırma yığını değil — denge korunmuş.
Nominalization is the signature of academic register; see Academic Register. What makes a sentence sound like a 'researcher' rather than a 'student' is often the nominalizing of verbs. The academic writer uses nominalization for three purposes: to compress ideas, to erase the agent objectively, and to chain ideas together. But the skilled academic does this in moderation; excessive density tires even reviewers.
In an essay, combine two short sentences ("X happened. This caused Y.") by nominalizing the first: "This X led to Y." It raises your cohesion and lexical-variety band — but 2-3 times per paragraph is enough; naturalness is also expected.
- transition, recognition, combustion, warming, intensification — successive nominalizations create academic density.
- 'This warming, in turn, has led to...' — the idea of the previous sentence (warming) became a noun and bridged to the new subject: cohesion.
- 'the identification of these links' — a whole previous idea (the discovery of the links) was packaged into a single noun phrase.
- There is almost no agent: who burns the coal, who implements the policy is not stated — objectivity.
- 'the adoption of solar and wind technology requires investment' — a verb clause (when countries adopt it) turned into a noun subject.
- The text still breathes with verbs (has become, produces, faces, requires); it is not a pile of pure nominalizations — balance is maintained.
- Metin bir adlaştırma zinciri üzerine kurulu: decline, prosperity, production, employment, arrival, expansion... Her biri bir fiili isme çevirir.
- Bağdaşıklık: 'The closure of several large factories followed' → 'This collapse had consequences' — önceki olay 'collapse' ismine paketlenip yeni özne oldu.
- Zincirleme neden-sonuç: migration → shrinking → reduction. Her adlaştırma bir sonraki cümlenin girişini kuruyor.
- Fail bilinçli olarak silik: fabrikaları kimin kapattığı, işleri kimin kestiği söylenmez — ekonomik güçler nesnel biçimde sunulur (bkz. Nesnellik).
- 'the creation of low-paid retail jobs cannot replace the security of skilled manufacturing work' — iki adlaştırma karşıtlığı tek cümlede bir argüman kuruyor.
- Metin sıkıcı olmuyor çünkü fiiller de var: 'offers', 'rested', 'brought', 'followed', 'suffered'. Adlaştırma ve fiil dengeli örülmüş.
- Sondaki 'the management of economic decline is as important as the pursuit of growth' — iki adlaştırmayı karşılaştırarak akılda kalıcı bir sonuç cümlesi (thesis) üretiyor.
- The text is built on a chain of nominalizations: decline, prosperity, production, employment, arrival, expansion... each turns a verb into a noun.
- Cohesion: 'The closure of several large factories followed' → 'This collapse had consequences' — the previous event was packaged into the noun 'collapse' and became the new subject.
- Chained cause-and-effect: migration → shrinking → reduction. Each nominalization sets up the opening of the next sentence.
- The agent is deliberately faded: who closed the factories, who cut the jobs is not stated — economic forces are presented objectively (see Objectivity).
- 'the creation of low-paid retail jobs cannot replace the security of skilled manufacturing work' — a contrast of two nominalizations builds an argument in a single sentence.
- The text is not boring because there are verbs too: 'offers', 'rested', 'brought', 'followed', 'suffered'. Nominalization and verb are woven in balance.
- The closing 'the management of economic decline is as important as the pursuit of growth' — it produces a memorable concluding sentence (thesis) by comparing two nominalizations.
Temel (B2): tek adlaştırma
Orta (C1): adlaştırma + bağdaşıklık
İleri (C2): yoğun ama dengeli
Basic (B2): a single nominalization
Intermediate (C1): nominalization + cohesion
Advanced (C2): dense but balanced
Aşağıdaki sorular kuralı ezberlemenizi değil, adlaştırmanın anlama ve tona ne yaptığını kavramanızı ölçer. Önce kendiniz düşünün, sonra cevabı açın.
- 'The company polluted the river' ile 'The pollution of the river was severe' cümlelerinden hangisi faili daha net gösterir ve neden?Birincisi. 'The company polluted' cümlesinde fail (the company) açık ve fiil çekimlidir. Adlaştırılmış ikinci cümlede fail silinmiş, olay soyut bir olguya dönüşmüştür — nesnellik kazanılır ama sorumluluk gizlenir.
- Neden bir gazete başlığı 'Rates Cut' der de 'The bank has cut interest rates' demez?
The following questions do not measure whether you have memorized the rule, but whether you have grasped what nominalization does to meaning and tone. Think for yourself first, then reveal the answer.
- Of the sentences 'The company polluted the river' and 'The pollution of the river was severe', which shows the agent more clearly, and why?The first one. In 'The company polluted' the agent (the company) is explicit and the verb is conjugated. In the nominalized second sentence the agent is deleted and the event turns into an abstract fact — objectivity is gained but responsibility is hidden.
- Why does a newspaper headline say 'Rates Cut' rather than 'The bank has cut interest rates'?Nominalization ('cut' as a noun) saves space and packages the event densely. Headlines have to give the most information in the fewest words; nominalization delivers that.
- What does a sentence starting with 'This decision...' add to the text?Cohesion. It packages a whole idea described in the previous sentence into the noun 'decision' and makes it the subject of the new sentence; thus the two sentences are linked by a logical chain.
- What happens if five nominalizations come one after another in a paragraph? What does a good writer do?The text becomes abstract, heavy and hard to read — a risk of jargon arises. A good writer balances nominalization density with concrete nouns and lively verbs, returning to the verb when needed.

Such a decline...).
- Faili gereksiz yere anmayın; nesnel bir ton tutturun.
- Ama fazla ileri gitmeyin: en az birkaç canlı fiil bırakın ki metin taşlaşmasın.
Örnek cevap: Over the past decade, the expansion of the technology sector has transformed the city. The arrival of new companies brought a rapid increase in high-paying jobs, which in turn fuelled a sharp rise in housing prices. This inflation has had an unexpected consequence: the displacement of long-standing residents who can no longer afford the rents. While the growth of the sector has boosted the local economy, its uneven distribution has deepened inequality. Any real solution will require not only continued investment but also the regulation of the housing market. (Adlaştırmalar: expansion, arrival, increase, rise, inflation, displacement, growth, distribution, investment, regulation — ama 'has transformed', 'brought', 'fuelled', 'will require' gibi fiiller metni canlı tutuyor.)
Task: Write a single-paragraph (100-140 word) academic text describing a change in the city or country you live in (population growth, the spread of technology, the decline of a sector, a transformation in education, etc.). Aim: use nominalization to condense information and chain ideas like a chain.
- Use at least 4 nominalizations (e.g. growth, decline, introduction, expansion, reduction).
- In at least one place, nominalize the idea of the previous sentence and make it the new subject (This growth... / Such a decline...).
- Do not mention the agent unnecessarily; keep an objective tone.
- But do not go too far: leave at least a few lively verbs so the text does not petrify.
Sample answer: Over the past decade, the expansion of the technology sector has transformed the city. (Nominalizations: expansion, arrival, increase, rise, inflation, displacement, growth, distribution, investment, regulation — but verbs like 'has transformed', 'brought', 'fuelled', 'will require' keep the text alive.)
İleri sınıflarda, bir siyasetçi açıklamasındaki 'sorumluluktan kaçış' adlaştırmalarını (Mistakes were made / There were failures) eleştirel biçimde çözümletin.
For concept checking use these questions: 'In this sentence, who performed the action — is it stated?' (objectivity awareness), 'From which verb did I derive this noun?' (production skill), 'Is there too much nominalization in this paragraph — is it hard to read?' (balance intuition). A student beginning to use nominalization excessively is actually a good sign; then the focus shifts from 'how to do it' to 'when to stop'.
Activity suggestion: A newspaper-headline hunt. Students find nominalizations (cut, ban, rise, launch, probe) in English news headlines and write the full verb sentence underneath. This shows both how nominalization works in the real world and reinforces the verb↔noun transformation in both directions. In advanced classes, have them critically analyse the 'evasion of responsibility' nominalizations (Mistakes were made / There were failures) in a politician's statement.
- Adlaştırma = fiili/sıfatı isme çevirip bir eylemi 'şey' gibi ele alma: decide → decision, able → ability.
- Üç ana işlevi: yoğunluk (bilgi sıkıştırma), nesnellik (faili silme, bkz. Nesnellik), bağdaşıklık (fikri geri-gönderme, bkz. Bağdaşıklık & Tutarlılık).
- Yollar: ekle türetme (-tion, -ment, -ance, -ness, -ity), sıfır ek (increase, change), ve düzensiz biçimler (grow → growth, believe → belief).
- Adlaştırmadan sonra fail iyelik ('s), nesne/konu of / in ile bağlanır: the destruction of the forest.
- En yaygın hata: çıplak fiili isim yerine koymak (the develop ✗ → the development ✓).
- Akademik register'ın imzasıdır (bkz. Akademik Register) ama aşırısı metni ağır, soyut ve okunmaz yapar.
- Türkçe zaten adlaştıran bir dildir (-me, -iş, -lik); kavram tanıdık, sadece İngilizce ekleri ve of/'s bağlanması öğrenilmeli.
- Altın kural: adlaştırmayı bir araç gibi kullan — gerektiğinde aç, gerektiğinde canlı bir fiile geri dön; denge her şeydir.
- Nominalization = turning a verb/adjective into a noun and treating an action like a 'thing': decide → decision, able → ability.
- Its three main functions: density (compressing information), objectivity (deleting the agent, see Objectivity), cohesion (referring an idea back, see Cohesion & Coherence).
- Routes: deriving with a suffix (-tion, -ment, -ance, -ness, -ity), zero suffix (increase, change), and irregular forms (grow → growth, believe → belief).
- After a nominalization the agent is linked with the possessive ('s), the object/topic with of / in: the destruction of the forest.
- The most common mistake: putting the bare verb in place of the noun (the develop ✗ → the development ✓).
- It is the signature of academic register (see Academic Register) but overuse makes the text heavy, abstract and unreadable.
- Turkish is already a nominalizing language (-me, -iş, -lik); the concept is familiar, only the English suffixes and of/'s linking need to be learned.
- Golden rule: use nominalization like a tool — unpack it when needed, return to a lively verb when needed; balance is everything.
