The (INFORM) ___ was helpful.) ve senden o kökü cümlenin gramerine oturacak biçimde türetmen istenir (doğru cevap: information).
Word formation is the engine that endlessly expands English vocabulary. Starting from a single root (root/base word), we add a prefix (prefix) at the front or a suffix (suffix) at the end, and so produce new words and — even more importantly — new parts of speech (noun, adjective, verb, adverb). For example, from the root happy (happy, adjective) come happiness (happiness, noun), unhappy (unhappy, adjective) and unhappily (unhappily, adverb). If you know one word, you may in fact know a family of five or six words.
So why does this matter so much? Because one of the most distinctive parts of English exams, the Use of English "word formation" task, measures exactly this: you are given a sentence with a root in brackets (e.g. The (INFORM) ___ was helpful.) and asked to derive that root so that it fits the grammar of the sentence (correct answer: information). Knowing the word is not enough; you must work out which part of speech the sentence needs, choose the right affix, and get the spelling right.
Turkish is itself a highly productive 'affixing language', so the logic is not foreign to you. Just as in Turkish the göz → gözlük → gözlükçü → gözlükçülük chain works, in English art → artist → artistic → artistically works by the same logic. The difference: while in Turkish the affixes are very regular and predictable (apart from vowel harmony), in English there are several affixes for the same meaning (for a noun: -tion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ance...), and which root takes which affix largely requires memorisation and familiarity .
The hard part of this topic comes down to three points: (1) Affix choice — why is 'agree' → 'agreement' and not 'agreeness'? (2) Spelling change — why does the final y turn into i when 'happy' becomes 'happiness'? (3) Meaning — is 'careless' the negation of 'careful', or a completely different word? This section will tackle all three one by one, with plenty of examples.
- Kök (base word): Türetmenin başladığı temel kelime — care, happy, agree, nation.
- Sonek (suffix): Kelimenin SONUNA eklenir ve çoğunlukla sözcük türünü değiştirir: care → careful (sıfat), care → careless (sıfat), quick → quickly (zarf).
- Önek (prefix): Kelimenin BAŞINA eklenir ve çoğunlukla anlamı değiştirir, türü değiştirmez: happy → unhappy, possible → impossible, do → redo.
- İsim yapan ekler: -tion, -sion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ance/-ence, -ship, -hood (inform→information, agree→agreement, happy→happiness).
- Sıfat yapan ekler: -ful, -less, -ous, -al, -ic, -ive, -y, -able/-ible (care→careful, danger→dangerous, rely→reliable).
- Zarf yapan ek: -ly (careful→carefully). Yazım: y→ily (easy→easily), -le→-ly (simple→simply).
- Fiil yapan ekler: -ise/-ize, -en, -ify (modern→modernise, wide→widen, pure→purify).
- Olumsuz önekler: un-, in-/im-/il-/ir-, dis-, non- (unhappy, impossible, illegal, irregular, dishonest).
- Yazım değişimleri kural: Ek eklerken kökün sonu değişebilir — happy→happiness (y→i), decide→decision, able→ability, argue→argument (e düşer).
- Sınav taktiği: Önce boşluğun sözcük türünü belirle → sonra kökten o türü üret → çoğul/olumsuz gerekiyor mu diye cümleyi tekrar oku.
- Root (base word): The basic word that derivation starts from — care, happy, agree, nation.
- Suffix: Added to the END of the word and usually changes the word class: care → careful (adjective), care → careless (adjective), quick → quickly (adverb).
- Prefix: Added to the FRONT of the word and usually changes the meaning, not the class: happy → unhappy, possible → impossible, do → redo.
- Noun-forming affixes: -tion, -sion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ance/-ence, -ship, -hood (inform→information, agree→agreement, happy→happiness).
- Adjective-forming affixes: -ful, -less, -ous, -al, -ic, -ive, -y, -able/-ible (care→careful, danger→dangerous, rely→reliable).
- Adverb-forming affix: -ly (careful→carefully). Spelling: y→ily (easy→easily), -le→-ly (simple→simply).
- Verb-forming affixes: -ise/-ize, -en, -ify (modern→modernise, wide→widen, pure→purify).
- Negative prefixes: un-, in-/im-/il-/ir-, dis-, non- (unhappy, impossible, illegal, irregular, dishonest).
- Spelling-change rule: When you add an affix the end of the root can change — happy→happiness (y→i), decide→decision, able→ability, argue→argument (e is dropped).
- Exam tactic: First decide the word class of the gap → then produce that class from the root → reread the sentence to check whether a plural/negative is needed.
- Temel kelimeyi belirle. Ailenin kökü: decide, act, nation.
- Sözcük türünü sonekle çevir. decide → decision (fiil → isim), act → active (fiil → sıfat), active → actively (sıfat → zarf).
- Anlamı önekle çevir. active → inactive, act → react.
Kelime türetmede 'olumlu / olumsuz / soru' çekimi yoktur; bunun yerine kuruluşu üç işlem üzerinden düşünürüz: (1) sonekle sözcük türünü değiştirme, (2) önekle anlamı ters çevirme/değiştirme, (3) ikisini birleştirme. Temel formül nettir:
1) Sonekle tür değiştirme (base + suffix)
Formül: kök + sonek → yeni sözcük türü. Sonek, kelimenin cümledeki görevini belirler. Aynı kökten farklı sonekler farklı türler üretir:
2) Önekle anlam değiştirme (prefix + base)
Formül: önek + kök → aynı tür, değişmiş anlam. Olumsuz önekler (un-, in-, im-, dis-...) kelimeyi tersine çevirir; re-, mis-, over- gibi önekler yeni anlam katar. Önemli: önek sözcük türünü değiştirmez (unhappy hâlâ sıfattır).
3) Önek + kök + sonek (tam türetme)
En zengin biçim: hem önek hem sonek aynı anda. Sınavlarda en çok puan burada kazanılır ya da kaybedilir.
| İşlem | Örnek | Değişen | Değişmeyen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonek ekleme | care → careful | Sözcük türü (isim/fiil → sıfat) | Temel anlam (dikkat) |
| Olumsuz önek | happy → unhappy | Anlam (ters) | Sözcük türü (sıfat kalır) |
| Anlam öneki | write → rewrite | Anlam (yeniden) | Sözcük türü (fiil kalır) |
| Önek + sonek | care → carelessly | Hem anlam hem tür | Kök (care) |
- Temel kelimeyi belirle. The root of the family: decide, act, nation.
- Change the word class with a suffix. decide → decision (verb → noun), act → active (verb → adjective), active → actively (adjective → adverb).
- Change the meaning with a prefix. active → inactive, act → react.
Word formation has no 'affirmative / negative / question' conjugation; instead we think of its construction through three operations : (1) changing the word class with a suffix, (2) reversing/changing the meaning with a prefix, (3) combining the two. The basic formula is clear:
1) Changing class with a suffix (base + suffix)
Formula: root + suffix → a new word class. The suffix determines the word's role in the sentence. Different suffixes on the same root produce different classes:
2) Changing meaning with a prefix (prefix + base)
Formula: prefix + root → same class, changed meaning. Negative prefixes (un-, in-, im-, dis-...) reverse the word; prefixes like re-, mis-, over- add a new meaning. Important: a prefix does not change the word class (unhappy is still an adjective).
3) Prefix + root + suffix (full derivation)
The richest form: both a prefix and a suffix at once. This is where the most points are won or lost in exams.
| Operation | Example | Changes | Stays the same |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adding a suffix | care → careful | Word class (noun/verb → adjective) | Core meaning (care) |
| Negative prefix | happy → unhappy | Meaning (reversed) | Word class (stays an adjective) |
| Meaning prefix | write → rewrite | Meaning (again) | Word class (stays a verb) |
| Prefix + suffix | care → carelessly | Both meaning and class | Root (care) |
Word formation görevinde doğru eki seçmek yeterli değil; kök ile ek birleşirken yazım çoğu zaman değişir. Bu değişimleri bilmemek, doğru kelimeyi yanlış yazıp puan kaybettirir. En sık karşılaşılan yazım kuralları şunlardır:
| Kural | Kök | Ek | Sonuç |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ünsüz + y → i | happy, easy, beauty | -ness / -ly / -ful | happiness, easily, beautiful |
| Ünlü + y → değişmez | play, enjoy | -er / -ment | player, enjoyment |
| Sessiz 'e' düşer (ünlüyle başlayan ek) | use, create, argue | -able / -ion / -ment | usable, creation, argument |
| Sessiz 'e' korunur (ünsüzle başlayan ek) | care, hope, use | -ful / -less / -ment | careful, hopeless, useful |
| -le → -ly | simple, terrible, gentle | -ly | simply, terribly, gently |
| -ic → -ically | basic, tragic, automatic | -ally | basically, tragically, automatically |
| Son ünsüz ikizleşir (kısa ünlü + tek ünsüz) | run, forget, refer | -er / -able / -ing | runner, forgettable, referring |
| -able → -ability | able, stable, reliable | -ity | ability, stability, reliability |
| Fiil sonu değişimi | decide, explode, maintain | -sion / -sion / -tenance | decision, explosion, maintenance |
In the word-formation task, choosing the right affix is not enough; when the root and affix join, the spelling often changes. Not knowing these changes makes you spell the right word wrongly and lose points. The most common spelling rules are:
| Rule | Root | Affix | Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| Consonant + y → i | happy, easy, beauty | -ness / -ly / -ful | happiness, easily, beautiful |
| Vowel + y → unchanged | play, enjoy | -er / -ment | player, enjoyment |
| Silent 'e' is dropped (affix starting with a vowel) | use, create, argue | -able / -ion / -ment | usable, creation, argument |
| Silent 'e' is kept (affix starting with a consonant) | care, hope, use | -ful / -less / -ment | careful, hopeless, useful |
| -le → -ly | simple, terrible, gentle | -ly | simply, terribly, gently |
| -ic → -ically | basic, tragic, automatic | -ally | basically, tragically, automatically |
| Final consonant doubles (short vowel + single consonant) | run, forget, refer | -er / -able / -ing | runner, forgettable, referring |
| -able → -ability | able, stable, reliable | -ity | ability, stability, reliability |
| Verb-ending change | decide, explode, maintain | -sion / -sion / -tenance | decision, explosion, maintenance |
Kelime türetmenin gözden kaçan ama önemli bir yönü: ek eklendiğinde vurgu (stress) yeri ve bazen ünlü sesler değişir. Aynı kelime ailesinin üyeleri farklı yerde vurgulanır; bu, konuşma ve dinleme (özellikle sözlü sınavlar) için kritiktir.
| Kök | Türev | Not |
|---|---|---|
| PHOtograph | phoTOgraphy / photoGRAPHic | -graphy vurguyu bir hece sağa çeker. |
| ECOnomy | ecoNOMical / ecoNOMics | -ic/-ical eki genelde kendinden ÖNCEKİ heceyi vurgular. |
| POlitics | poLItical / politiCIAN | -ician eki vurguyu son heceye yaklaştırır. |
| EDucate | eduCAtion | -ation eki daima kendinden önceki heceyi vurgular (-A-tion). |
| comPETE | compeTItion / COMpetent | aynı kök, farklı vurgu ve ünlü. |
| ANalyse | aNAlysis / anaLYtical | kelime ailesi boyunca vurgu gezer. |
An overlooked but important aspect of word formation: when an affix is added, the position of the stress and sometimes the vowel sounds change. Members of the same word family are stressed in different places; this is critical for speaking and listening (especially oral exams).
| Root | Derivative | Note |
|---|---|---|
| PHOtograph | phoTOgraphy / photoGRAPHic | -graphy pulls the stress one syllable to the right. |
| ECOnomy | ecoNOMical / ecoNOMics | -ic/-ical usually stresses the syllable BEFORE it. |
| POlitics | poLItical / politiCIAN | -ician moves the stress towards the final syllable. |
| EDucate | eduCAtion | -ation always stresses the syllable before it (-A-tion). |
| comPETE | compeTItion / COMpetent | same root, different stress and vowel. |
| ANalyse | aNAlysis / anaLYtical | stress wanders across the word family. |
İsim üret
-tion, -ment, -ness, -ity: decide → decision, dark → darkness.
Sıfat üret
-ive, -ful, -ous, -al: act → active, nature → natural.
Olumsuzluk, tekrar, yanlışlık, aşırılık: un-/in-/im-/dis- (olumsuz), re- (yeniden), mis- (yanlış), over-/under- (aşırı/yetersiz). Ayrıntı için Önekler & Sonekler.
Make a noun
-tion, -ment, -ness, -ity: decide → decision, dark → darkness.
Make an adjective
-ive, -ful, -ous, -al: act → active, nature → natural.
Make a verb / adverb
-ise/-ify and -ly: pure → purify, quick → quickly.
1) Making nouns (the most frequent exam item)
We derive nouns for abstract concepts and processes. The most common affixes: -tion/-sion (from a verb), -ment (from a verb), -ness (from an adjective), -ity (from an adjective), -ance/-ence (from a verb/adjective).
2) Making person/occupation nouns
For the person who does the action or an expert in a field: -er/-or (the doer), -ist (expert/supporter), -ian (occupation/expertise).
3) Making adjectives
To express a quality: -ful (full of), -less (without), -ous (having), -al/-ical, -ive, -y, -able/-ible (that can be done).
4) Making adverbs
To describe how an action is done, we add -ly to the adjective. This modifies the verb.
5) Making verbs
To 'make / turn into' a state: -ise/-ize (modernise), -en (widen), -ify (simplify).
6) Changing meaning with a prefix
Negation, repetition, error, excess: un-/in-/im-/dis- (negative), re- (again), mis- (wrongly), over-/under- (excess/insufficient). For detail see Prefixes & Suffixes.
Word formation'da 'zaman ifadeleri' yerine, boşluğun hangi sözcük türünü istediğini ele veren dilbilgisel ipuçları vardır. Cümleyi okurken boşluğun komşularına bak: artikeller, sıfatlar ve fiiller boşluğun türünü açık eder.
| Boşluğun komşusu | Muhtemel tür | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| a / an / the + ___ | isim | the ___ (information) |
| sıfat + ___ | isim | a difficult ___ (decision) |
| ___ + isim | sıfat | a ___ meal (delicious) |
| be (is/are/was) + ___ | sıfat | It was ___ (helpful) |
| fiil + ___ (nasıl?) | zarf | She sang ___ (beautifully) |
| very / quite / really + ___ | sıfat veya zarf | very ___ (careful / carefully) |
| to + ___ | fiil (yalın) | to ___ the system (modernise) |
| olumsuz bağlam (not, without) | genelde olumsuz önek | It was ___ (impossible) |
In word formation, instead of 'time expressions', there are grammatical clues that reveal which word class the gap wants. As you read the sentence, look at the gap's neighbours: articles, adjectives and verbs give away the gap's class.
| The gap's neighbour | Likely class | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a / an / the + ___ | noun | the ___ (information) |
| adjective + ___ | noun | a difficult ___ (decision) |
| ___ + noun | adjective | a ___ meal (delicious) |
| be (is/are/was) + ___ | adjective | It was ___ (helpful) |
| verb + ___ (how?) | adverb | She sang ___ (beautifully) |
| very / quite / really + ___ | adjective or adverb | very ___ (careful / carefully) |
| to + ___ | verb (base form) | to ___ the system (modernise) |
| negative context (not, without) | usually a negative prefix | It was ___ (impossible) |
Cümlede boşluğun türünü yanındaki kelimeden oku: artikel/sıfattan sonra isim, özneden sonra fiil, be/seem sonrası sıfat gelir — sonra doğru soneki seç.
Aynı kökten türeyen kelimeler her zaman 'aynı şeyin farklı türü' değildir; çoğu zaman farklı, hatta zıt anlamlar taşır. Türetmenin ustalığı, bu ince farkları bilmektedir.
-ful ve -less her zaman zıt değildir. Çoğu çiftte öyledir (careful/careless, hopeful/hopeless), ama priceless 'değersiz' değil, tam tersine 'paha biçilemez' demektir; invaluable da 'değersiz' değil 'çok değerli'dir. Önek/sonek mantığını körü körüne uygulamak burada yanıltır.
-ic ve -ical çoğu zaman anlamı ayırır. historic (tarihî öneme sahip: a historic victory) vs historical (tarihe ait: a historical document); classic (klasikleşmiş, birinci sınıf) vs classical (klasik dönem/müzik). Bu ayrım C1 seviyesinde puan getirir.
-ing ve -ed sıfatları karıştırma. Türetmede aktif/pasif ayrımı: boring (sıkıcı — kaynak) vs bored (sıkılmış — hisseden); interesting/interested, confusing/confused. Türk öğrenciler sıkça 'I am boring' der ama bu 'ben sıkıcı biriyim' demektir.
Register (resmiyet) farkı. Aynı anlamın farklı türevleri farklı resmiyette olabilir. Konuşmada 'a lot of' derken, akademik yazıda türetilmiş isimleri tercih ederiz: 'a significant reduction', 'a marked improvement'. Türetilmiş soyut isimler yazıya bilgili/resmî bir hava katar.
Read the class of the gap in the sentence from the neighbouring word : after an article/adjective a noun, after the subject a verb, be/seem after adjective follows — then choose the right suffix.
Words derived from the same root are not always 'different classes of the same thing'; they often carry different, even opposite meanings . Mastery of derivation lies in knowing these fine differences.
-ful and -less are not always opposites. In most pairs they are (careful/careless, hopeful/hopeless), but priceless does not mean 'worthless' — on the contrary it means 'priceless'; invaluable too does not mean 'worthless' but 'very valuable'. Applying prefix/suffix logic blindly misleads you here.
-ic and -ical often separate the meaning. historic (of historical importance: a historic victory) vs historical (tarihe ait: a historical document); classic (classic, top-class) vs classical (the classical period/music). This distinction earns points at C1 level.
Confusing -ing and -ed adjectives. The active/passive distinction in derivation: boring (boring — the source) vs bored (bored — the one who feels); interesting/interested, confusing/confused. Turkish learners often say 'I am boring', but that means 'I am a boring person'.
Register (formality) difference. Different derivatives of the same meaning can differ in register. Where we say 'a lot of' in speech, in academic writing we prefer derived nouns: 'a significant reduction', 'a marked improvement. Derived abstract nouns give writing an informed, formal tone.
İngilizcede olumsuz önek seçimi köke bağlıdır (un-, in-, im-, ir-, dis-) ve yanlış önek anlamı bozar.
- Türkçede sözcük türü genelde ekten net anlaşılır. İngilizcede aynı kelime ek almadan tür değiştirebilir (email/to email) — bu Türkçede yoktur.
English
The same root builds a whole family with different affixes: nation → national → nationality → nationalise.
Turkish
Derivation proceeds by suffixing from the end: millet → milli → milliyet → millileştirmek; order and harmony are set by the suffix.
Like English, Turkish is an agglutinative language, so the 'root + affix' logic feels familiar to you. bilgi → bilgilen(dir) → bilgilendirme chain uses the same way of thinking as the inform → information in English. But there are important differences between the two languages that trip learners up:
- In Turkish there is usually a single regular affix for a meaning (-lik/-lık: güzellik, iyilik). In English, for the same meaning, there are several competing affixes (-ness, -ity, -ment, -tion), and which one is correct depends on the root — it must be memorised.
- In Turkish the root rarely changes when you add an affix (vowel harmony is regular). In English the spelling changes often (happy→happiness, decide→decision) and this is unpredictable.
- In Turkish negation is usually made with an affix/word (değil, -siz). In English the negative prefix choice depends on the root (un-, in-, im-, ir-, dis-) and the wrong prefix ruins the meaning.
- In Turkish the word class is usually clear from the affix. In English the same word can change class without any affix (email/to email) — this does not exist in Turkish.

Yanlış sonekle yanlış tür üretme: *I need your advise (fiil) değil advice (isim); *economical growth yerine bağlama göre economic growth.
Producing the wrong class with the wrong suffix: *I need your advise (verb) not advice (noun); *economical growth instead, depending on context, economic growth.
Türetme kuralları güçlüdür ama İngilizcede düzensizlikler ve istisnalar boldur. En sık sınav çıkışı olan özel durumlar:
- Düzensiz isim türevleri: grow → growth, die → death, sell → sale, believe → belief, choose → choice, lose → loss, fly → flight. Bunlar -tion/-ment almaz; ezber ister.
- -ce / -se ayrımı (BrE): advice (isim) / advise (fiil), practice (isim) / practise (fiil), licence (isim) / license (fiil). Amerikan İngilizcesinde çoğu tek biçim (practice/license) kullanılır.
- Ünlüsü değişen türevler: strong → strength(en), long → length, deep → depth, wide → width, high → height, proud → pride. Kök 'içeriden' değişir.
- Anlamı ele geçirmiş türevler: priceless (değersiz değil, paha biçilemez), invaluable (çok değerli), flammable = inflammable (ikisi de 'yanıcı' — 'in-' burada olumsuz DEĞİL!).
- Çift olumsuz önek almayanlar: 'unpossible' yoktur, 'impossible' doğrudur; 'inhappy' yoktur, 'unhappy' doğrudur. Doğru önek köke bağlıdır, tahmin edilemez.
Derivation rules are strong, but English is full of irregularities and exceptions. The special cases that come up most in exams:
- Irregular noun derivatives: grow → growth, die → death, sell → sale, believe → belief, choose → choice, lose → loss, fly → flight. These do not take -tion/-ment; they must be memorised.
- The -ce / -se distinction (BrE): advice (noun) / advise (verb), practice (noun) / practise (verb), licence (noun) / license (verb). In American English one form (practice/license) is mostly used.
- Derivatives with a changing vowel: strong → strength(en), long → length, deep → depth, wide → width, high → height, proud → pride. The root changes 'from the inside'.
- Derivatives that have hijacked their meaning: priceless (not worthless — priceless), invaluable (very valuable), flammable = inflammable (both mean 'flammable' — 'in-' here is NOT negative!).
- Words that don't take just any negative prefix: 'unpossible' doesn't exist, 'impossible' is correct; 'inhappy' doesn't exist, 'unhappy' is correct. The right prefix depends on the root and is unpredictable.
Türetilmiş kelimeler ders kitabına özgü değildir; günlük konuşmanın her yerindedir. Doğal bir sohbette türev aileleri sürekli akar:
Derived words are not confined to the textbook; they are everywhere in everyday speech. In a natural conversation, derivative families flow constantly:
Akademik yazının 'yoğun' ve resmî tınısı büyük ölçüde türetilmiş soyut isimlere dayanır. Konuşma dilinde fiil kullandığımız yerde (things changed a lot), akademik yazı ismi tercih eder (a significant transformation occurred). Bu sürece 'nominalisation' (isimleştirme) denir ve C1 yazımının imzasıdır.
- 'importance' = import(ant) → -ance ile soyut isim; akademik giriş kalıbı.
- 'acquisition' = acquire → acquisition; düzensiz isim türevi.
- 'awareness' = aware → -ness soyut isim.
- 'transformation' = transform → -ation; isimleştirme örneği.
- 'understanding' = understand → -ing ile isimleşmiş biçim.
- 'comprehension' = comprehend → -sion; akademik isim.
- 'suffixation / prefixation' bizzat konunun terimleri, -ation ile isimleşmiş.
The 'dense', formal ring of academic writing rests largely on derived abstract nouns . Where in speech we use a verb (things changed a lot), academic writing prefers a noun (a significant transformation occurred). This process is called 'nominalisation' and is the signature of C1 writing.
- 'importance' = import(ant) → abstract noun with -ance; an academic opening pattern.
- 'acquisition' = acquire → acquisition; an irregular noun derivative.
- 'awareness' = aware → -ness abstract noun.
- 'transformation' = transform → -ation; an example of nominalisation.
- 'understanding' = understand → a form nominalised with -ing.

- 'nervousness' = nervous → -ness; 'excitement' = excite → -ment: iki farklı isim eki yan yana.

- 'nervousness' = nervous → -ness; 'excitement' = excite → -ment: two different noun suffixes side by side.

- 'invaluable' here means not 'worthless' but 'very valuable' — a derivative that has hijacked its meaning.
- 'transformation' = transform → -ation; 'effortless' = effort → -less; 'thankful' = thank → -ful: adjective and noun suffixes together.
- 'promising' = promise → -ing adjective, an active use meaning 'full of promise'.

- 'I am boring' ile 'I am bored' arasındaki fark nedir?'I am boring' = ben sıkıcı biriyim (kaynak); 'I am bored' = ben sıkıldım (hisseden). -ing kaynağı, -ed hisseden kişiyi niteler.
- Cümlede 'the ___ of the project' boşluğu hangi sözcük türünü ister?İsim. 'the ... of' kalıbı neredeyse her zaman bir isim gerektirir (ör. the success of the project).
- 'economic' ve 'economical' aynı şey mi?Hayır. economic = ekonomiyle ilgili (economic growth); economical = tasarruflu/hesaplı (an economical car). Aynı kök, farklı anlam.
The following questions test not the rule but the meaning and logic . Think for yourself first, then reveal the answer.
- Are 'careful' and 'careless' opposites, and which suffixes create this opposition?Yes, they are opposites: -ful ('full of care') and -less ('without care') produce opposite adjectives from the same root (care).
- The word 'priceless' contains -less. So does it mean 'worthless'?No. Although -less usually means 'without', priceless means 'so valuable that no price can be set' — an exception that has hijacked its meaning.
- Does adding a prefix change a word's class (noun/adjective)?Usually not. Prefixes mostly change the meaning, not the class: happy (adjective) → unhappy (still an adjective).
- What is the difference between 'I am boring' and 'I am bored'?'I am boring' = I am a boring person (the source); 'I am bored' = I feel bored (the one who feels). -ing describes the source, -ed the one who feels.
- In the sentence 'the ___ of the project', which word class does the gap want?A noun. The 'the ... of' pattern almost always requires a noun (e.g. the success of the project).
- Are 'economic' and 'economical' the same thing? No. economic = relating to the economy (economic growth); economical = thrifty/money-saving (an economical car). Same root, different meaning.

Task: Write a 120–160 word paragraph describing a moment of 'success/failure and growth' that someone experienced at work or school. Your aim is to use, as naturally as possible, as many derived words (at least 8 different derivatives) as you can.
- Guiding question 1: What emotions did the person feel at first? (excitement, nervousness, disappointment...)
- Guiding question 2: What mistakes did they make and how did you describe them? (careless, unclear, forgetful...)
- Guiding question 3: How did they change over time? (improvement, confidence, reliable, organised...)
- Guiding question 4: What did they learn in the end? (importance, valuable, encouragement...)
- Use at least one negative prefix (un-/in-/im-), one -ness/-ment noun, one -ly adverb and one -ful/-less adjective.
Kavram kontrol soruları (CCQ): 'Is careless the opposite of careful? (Yes) What about priceless — is it the opposite of valuable? (No, it means very valuable!)' Bu tür sorular, öğrencinin ekleri körü körüne değil anlamla uyguladığını test eder. 'The word before the gap is a — so what part of speech do we need?' (a noun) sorusu, tür avı refleksini pekiştirir.
Etkinlik önerileri: (1) Word family board — tahtaya bir kök yaz (DECIDE), öğrenciler ekip hâlinde tüm aileyi doldursun (decision/decisive/decisively/indecisive). (2) Spot the class — cümlelerdeki boşlukların türünü işaretleme yarışı. (3) Spelling trap hunt — happiness, argument, truly gibi tuzakları bulma oyunu. (4) Gerçek sınav (Use of English Part 3) formatında zamanlı alıştırma.
Concept-check questions (CCQ): 'Is careless the opposite of careful? (Yes) What about priceless — is it the opposite of valuable? (No, it means very valuable!)' Such questions test whether the student applies affixes by meaning rather than blindly. 'The word before the gap is a — so what part of speech do we need?' (a noun) reinforces the class-hunting reflex.
Activity suggestions: (1) Word family board — write a root on the board (DECIDE) and have students fill in the whole family as a team (decision/decisive/decisively/indecisive). (2) Spot the class — a race to mark the class of the gaps in sentences. (3) Spelling trap hunt — a game of finding traps like happiness, argument, truly. (4) Timed practice in real-exam format (Use of English Part 3).
- Kelime türetme = kök + önek/sonek ile yeni kelime ve yeni sözcük türü üretme (happy → happiness → unhappy → unhappily).
- Sonekler türü değiştirir (care → careful → carefully); önekler anlamı değiştirir, türü değiştirmez (happy → unhappy).
- İsim ekleri: -tion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ance/-ence. Sıfat ekleri: -ful, -less, -ous, -al, -ic, -ive, -able. Zarf: -ly. Fiil: -ise/-ize, -en, -ify.
- Sınav taktiği: ÖNCE boşluğun sözcük türünü bul (komşu artikel/sıfat/fiile bak), SONRA o türü kökten üret, EN SON olumsuz/çoğul gerekli mi diye kontrol et.
- Yazım değişimlerine dikkat: happy→happiness (y→i), argue→argument (e düşer), true→truly, -ful tek 'l'.
- Anlam tuzakları: careless ≠ priceless mantığı; economic ≠ economical; boring (kaynak) ≠ bored (hisseden); flammable = inflammable.
- Olumsuz önek seçimi köke bağlıdır (impossible, illegal, irregular, unhappy) — tahmin edilemez, aşinalık ister.
- Türkçe düşünme tuzağı: sayılamaz isimleri çoğul yapmak (informations✗), fiili niteleyen yere sıfat koymak (quick✗ → quickly).
- Devamı ve tamamlayıcıları: Önekler & Sonekler (ek envanteri), Eş Dizimler (Collocations) (doğru eşleşme), Karıştırılan Kelimeler (karıştırılan çiftler).
- Word formation = producing new words and new parts of speech from a root with prefixes/suffixes (happy → happiness → unhappy → unhappily).
- Suffixes change the class (care → careful → carefully); prefixes change the meaning, not the class (happy → unhappy).
- Noun suffixes: -tion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ance/-ence. Adjective suffixes: -ful, -less, -ous, -al, -ic, -ive, -able. Adverb: -ly. Verb: -ise/-ize, -en, -ify.
- Exam tactic: FIRST find the gap's word class (look at the neighbouring article/adjective/verb), THEN produce that class from the root, LAST check whether a negative/plural is needed.
- Watch spelling changes: happy→happiness (y→i), argue→argument (e is dropped), true→truly, -ful single 'l'.
- Meaning traps: the careless ≠ priceless logic; economic ≠ economical; boring (source) ≠ bored (feeler); flammable = inflammable.
- Negative-prefix choice depends on the root (impossible, illegal, irregular, unhappy) — unpredictable, requires familiarity.
- Thinking-in-Turkish trap: making uncountable nouns plural (informations✗), putting an adjective where a verb-modifier belongs (quick✗ → quickly).
- Continuations and complements: Prefixes & Suffixes (the affix inventory), Collocations (correct matching), Confusable Words (confused pairs).
