Prefixes and suffixes are small attached pieces added to the start and end of words (collectively they are called affixes — in English affixes). They look small, but they are the engine that endlessly expands English vocabulary. Starting from a single root (root/base word) and adding a prefix to the front and a suffix to the end, we produce new meanings and new word classes: from the root happy come unhappy, happiness, and happily.
At its core there is a very clear division of labour: a prefix changes the meaning, a suffix changes the word class. The prefix un- reverses a word (fair → unfair) but still leaves it an adjective. The suffix -ness, on the other hand, keeps the meaning but changes the class (happy adjective → happiness noun). This single sentence is the key to eighty per cent of the topic.
So why is it so important? Because when you learn one word you may actually have learned a whole word family. If you know the verb decide, with a little extra knowledge you also own decision, decisive, decisively, indecisive — five words at once. The 'word formation' task in Use of English, the section where exams lose the most points, measures exactly this.
Turkish is also an extremely productive 'affixing language', so the logic is not foreign to you. Just as the Turkish chain göz → gözlük → gözlükçü → gözlükçülük works, the English art → artist → artistic → artistically works by the same logic. The difference is this: whereas Turkish affixes are very regular and predictable, English has several affixes for the same meaning (for a noun -tion, -ment, -ness, -ity...), and which root takes which affix largely requires familiarity and memorisation.
The hardest part of the topic is choosing the negative prefix: why does 'possible' become impossible, 'legal' become illegal, and 'regular' become irregular? The choice depends on the letter the word starts with and its origin. This section will work out, with plenty of examples, both the logic behind this choice and ways to remember it.
- Önek uyumu: in- öneki sonraki harfe uyar: l önünde il- (legal→illegal), r önünde ir- (regular→irregular), m/p/b önünde im- (possible→impossible).
- Anlam önekleri: re- (tekrar: rewrite), mis- (yanlış: misunderstand), over- (aşırı: overwork), under- (yetersiz: underestimate), pre- (önce: preview), dis- (ters: disappear).
- İsim yapan sonekler: -tion/-sion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ance/-ence, -ship, -hood (information, agreement, happiness, ability).
- Sıfat yapan sonekler: -ful, -less, -ous, -al, -ic, -ive, -y, -able/-ible (careful, dangerous, national, creative, reliable).
- Zarf yapan ek: -ly (careful → carefully). Yazım: y → ily (easy→easily), -le → -ly (simple→simply).
- Fiil yapan sonekler: -ise/-ize, -en, -ify (modernise, widen, simplify).
- Sınav taktiği: Önce boşluğun sözcük türünü belirle → o türü üreten soneki seç → cümle olumsuzsa doğru öneki ekle → yazımı kontrol et.
- Prefix: added to the START of a word, mostly changes the meaning, not the class: happy → unhappy (still an adjective), write → rewrite (still a verb).
- Suffix: added to the END of a word, mostly changes the word class: inform → information (noun), care → careful (adjective), quick → quickly (adverb).
- Negative prefixes: un-, in-, im-, il-, ir-, dis-, non- (unhappy, incorrect, impossible, illegal, irregular, dishonest, non-stop).
- Prefix assimilation: the in- prefix assimilates to the next letter: before l → il- (legal→illegal), before r → ir- (regular→irregular), before m/p/b → im- (possible→impossible).
- Meaning prefixes: re- (again: rewrite), mis- (wrongly: misunderstand), over- (excessively: overwork), under- (insufficiently: underestimate), pre- (before: preview), dis- (reverse: disappear).
- Noun-forming suffixes: -tion/-sion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ance/-ence, -ship, -hood (information, agreement, happiness, ability).
- Adjective-forming suffixes: -ful, -less, -ous, -al, -ic, -ive, -y, -able/-ible (careful, dangerous, national, creative, reliable).
- Adverb-forming affix: -ly (careful → carefully). Spelling: y → ily (easy→easily), -le → -ly (simple→simply).
- Verb-forming suffixes: -ise/-ize, -en, -ify (modernise, widen, simplify).
- Exam tactic: First determine the word class of the gap → choose the suffix that produces that class → if the sentence is negative, add the correct prefix → check the spelling.
Olumsuz önekler (un-, in-, im-, dis-...) anlamı tersine çevirir; re-, mis-, over- gibi önekler yeni bir anlam katar. Kritik nokta: önek sözcük türünü değiştirmez — unhappy hâlâ sıfattır, rewrite hâlâ fiildir.
3) Önek + kök + sonek (tam türetme)
En zengin biçim: hem önek hem sonek aynı anda çalışır. Sınavlarda en çok puan burada kazanılır ya da kaybedilir.
| İşlem | Örnek | Değişen | Değişmeyen |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sonek ekleme | care → careful | Sözcük türü (isim/fiil → sıfat) | Temel anlam (dikkat) |
| Olumsuz önek | happy → unhappy | Anlam (ters) | Sözcük türü (sıfat kalır) |
| Anlam öneki | write → rewrite | Anlam (yeniden) | Sözcük türü (fiil kalır) |
| Önek + sonek | care → carelessly | Hem anlam hem tür | Kök (care) |
- Choose the root. Start from the root or base word that carries the meaning: happy, care, nation.
- Change the class with a suffix. An affix added to the end usually turns the word class: happy → happiness (adjective → noun), care → careful (noun → adjective).
- Change the meaning with a prefix. An affix added to the front turns the meaning, not the class: happy → unhappy, understand → misunderstand.
Prefixes and suffixes have no 'affirmative / negative / question' conjugation; instead we think of the structure through three operations: (1) changing the word class with a suffix, (2) changing the meaning with a prefix, (3) combining the two. The formulas are clear.
1) Changing class with a suffix (root + suffix)
Formula: root + suffix → new word class. The suffix determines the word's role in the sentence; the meaning is largely preserved. Different suffixes on the same root produce different classes:
2) Changing meaning with a prefix (prefix + root)
Formula: prefix + root → same class, changed meaning. Negative prefixes (un-, in-, im-, dis-...) reverse the meaning; prefixes like re-, mis-, over- add a new meaning. The critical point: a prefix does not change the word class — unhappy is still an adjective, rewrite is still a verb.
3) Prefix + root + suffix (full derivation)
The richest form: both a prefix and a suffix work at the same time. This is where the most points are won or lost in exams.
| Operation | Example | What changes | What stays |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adding a suffix | care → careful | Word class (noun/verb → adjective) | Core meaning (care) |
| Negative prefix | happy → unhappy | Meaning (reversed) | Word class (stays an adjective) |
| Meaning prefix | write → rewrite | Meaning (again) | Word class (stays a verb) |
| Prefix + suffix | care → carelessly | Both meaning and class | Root (care) |
Ek eklerken kökün sonu (ve bazen öneğin sonu) yazım değişimine uğrar. Bu değişimleri bilmek, sınavda 'doğru kelimeyi seçtin ama yanlış yazdın' hatasını önler. En sık altı kural aşağıda.
| Kural | Örnek | Not |
|---|---|---|
| Sonda -y (ünsüz + y) → i | happy → happiness, easy → easily, beauty → beautiful | Ünlüden sonraki y korunur: play → player, enjoy → enjoyable. |
| Sessiz -e düşer (ünlüyle başlayan ek) | create → creation, use → usable, fame → famous | Ünsüzle başlayan ekte e kalır: use → useful, care → careless. |
| -e korunur (yumuşak c/g) | manage → manageable, notice → noticeable, courage → courageous | 'e', c/g'yi yumuşak (/s/,/dʒ/) tutmak için kalır. |
| Tek ünsüz + vurgulu hece → çift ünsüz | begin → beginner, forget → forgettable, run → runner | Vurgu son hecede + tek ünlü + tek ünsüz olunca ünsüz çiftlenir. |
| -able / -ible ile kök e düşebilir | value → valuable, response → responsible, sense → sensible | -able çoğunlukla tam kelimelere; -ible sık sık köklere gelir. |
| -ic + -ally | basic → basically, tragic → tragically, dramatic → dramatically | -ic ile biten sıfatlar zarfta -ally alır (public → publicly istisnadır). |
When adding an affix, the end of the root (and sometimes the end of the prefix) undergoes a spelling change. Knowing these changes prevents the 'you chose the right word but spelled it wrong' error in exams. The six most frequent rules are below.
| Rule | Example | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Final -y (consonant + y) → i | happy → happiness, easy → easily, beauty → beautiful | A y after a vowel is kept: play → player, enjoy → enjoyable. |
| Silent -e drops (suffix starting with a vowel) | create → creation, use → usable, fame → famous | With a suffix starting with a consonant, the e stays: use → useful, care → careless. |
| -e is kept (soft c/g) | manage → manageable, notice → noticeable, courage → courageous | The 'e' stays to keep c/g soft (/s/, /dʒ/). |
| Single consonant + stressed syllable → double consonant | begin → beginner, forget → forgettable, run → runner | When the stress is on the last syllable + single vowel + single consonant, the consonant is doubled. |
| Root e may drop with -able / -ible | value → valuable, response → responsible, sense → sensible | -able is mostly added to whole words; -ible often to roots. |
| -ic + -ally | basic → basically, tragic → tragically, dramatic → dramatically | Adjectives ending in -ic take -ally as an adverb (public → publicly is an exception). |
İsim yapan sonekler
-tion, -ment, -ness, -ity: inform → information, happy → happiness.
Sıfat yapan sonekler
-ful, -less, -able, -ous: care → careful/careless, fame → famous.
Fiil yapan sonekler
-ise/-ize, -en, -ify: modern → modernise, wide → widen.
A) İsim yapan sonekler (en sık sınav çıkışı)
Fiil ya da sıfattan soyut/somut isim üretirler. Türkçedeki -lik/-me karşılığıdır. Aynı anlam için birçok ek yarıştığından hangi kökün hangisini aldığı aşinalık ister: -tion/-sion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ance/-ence, -ship, -hood.
B) Kişi ve meslek sonekleri
-er/-or eylemi yapanı, -ist/-ian uzman veya meslek sahibini gösterir. Türkçede -ci/-cı karşılığıdır (öğret-men, sanat-çı).
C) Sıfat yapan sonekler
İsim veya fiilden nitelik sıfatı üretir. -ful 'dolu/-li', -less 'yoksun/-siz', -ous/-al/-ic/-ive nitelik, -able/-ible 'yapılabilir' anlamı katar.
D) Zarf yapan sonek: -ly
G) Anlam önekleri (re-/mis-/over-/under-/pre-/co-...)
Olumsuzluk dışında da güçlü anlam katarlar: re- tekrar, mis- yanlış, over- aşırı, under- yetersiz, pre- önce, co- birlikte, anti- karşıt.
Noun-forming suffixes
-tion, -ment, -ness, -ity: inform → information, happy → happiness.
Adjective-forming suffixes
-ful, -less, -able, -ous: care → careful/careless, fame → famous.
Verb-forming suffixes
-ise/-ize, -en, -ify: modern → modernise, wide → widen.
A) Noun-forming suffixes (the most frequent in exams)
They produce abstract or concrete nouns from a verb or adjective. They are the equivalent of Turkish -lik/-me. Because many affixes compete for the same meaning, which root takes which requires familiarity: -tion/-sion, -ment, -ness, -ity, -ance/-ence, -ship, -hood.
B) Person and profession suffixes
-er/-or shows the doer of the action, -ist/-ian the expert or professional. It is the equivalent of Turkish -ci/-cı (öğret-men, sanat-çı).
C) Adjective-forming suffixes
They produce quality adjectives from a noun or verb. -ful adds 'full of', -less 'without', -ous/-al/-ic/-ive quality, and -able/-ible 'able to be done'.
D) Adverb-forming suffix: -ly
It produces an adverb from an adjective; it says 'how' an action is done. It is the equivalent of Turkish -ce/-ca and '-lıkla'.
E) Verb-forming suffixes: -ise/-ize, -en, -ify
They produce a verb from an adjective/noun; the equivalent of Turkish '-leştirmek/-lemek'. Watch the -ise (BrE) / -ize (AmE) spelling.
F) Negative prefixes (un-/in-/im-/il-/ir-/dis-/non-)
They reverse the meaning; they do not change the word class. The most common and safe one is un-; Latinate adjectives often take in- and its variants.
G) Meaning prefixes (re-/mis-/over-/under-/pre-/co-...)
Besides negation, they also add strong meaning: re- again, mis- wrongly, over- excessively, under- insufficiently, pre- before, co- together, anti- against.
Bir zaman konusunda 'zaman ifadeleri' vardır; burada onların karşılığı, boşluğun hangi sözcük türünü ve hangi olumsuzluğu istediğini ele veren dilbilgisel ipuçlarıdır. Cümleyi okurken boşluğun komşularına bak: artikel, sıfat, be-fiili, 'to' ve olumsuz bağlam türü açık eder.
| Boşluğun komşusu | Muhtemel tür | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| a / an / the + ___ | isim | the ___ (decision) |
| sıfat + ___ | isim | an important ___ (agreement) |
| ___ + isim | sıfat | a ___ meal (delicious) |
| be (is/are/was) + ___ | sıfat | It was ___ (helpful) |
| fiil + ___ (nasıl?) | zarf | She sang ___ (beautifully) |
| very / quite / really + ___ | sıfat veya zarf | very ___ (careful / carefully) |
| to + ___ | fiil (yalın) | to ___ the system (modernise) |
| İpucu / bağlam | Sinyal | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| not, no, without, never | olumsuz önek gerekebilir | It was ___ to fix (impossible) |
| but / however + zıtlık | olumsuz türev | polite but ___ (unhelpful) |
| although, despite | ters anlam beklenir | ___ of the danger (unaware) |
| again / once more | re- öneki | She had to ___ it (rewrite) |
| too much / excessively | over- öneki | He ___ everything (overthinks) |
A tense topic has 'time expressions'; here their equivalent is the grammatical clues that reveal which word class and which negation the gap wants. As you read the sentence, look at the gap's neighbours: an article, an adjective, the verb 'be', 'to', and a negative context give away the class.
| The gap's neighbour | Likely class | Example |
|---|---|---|
| a / an / the + ___ | noun | the ___ (decision) |
| adjective + ___ | noun | an important ___ (agreement) |
| ___ + noun | adjective | a ___ meal (delicious) |
| be (is/are/was) + ___ | adjective | It was ___ (helpful) |
| verb + ___ (how?) | adverb | She sang ___ (beautifully) |
| very / quite / really + ___ | adjective or adverb | very ___ (careful / carefully) |
| to + ___ | verb (base) | to ___ the system (modernise) |
| Clue / context | Signal | Example |
|---|---|---|
| not, no, without, never | a negative prefix may be needed | It was ___ to fix (impossible) |
| but / however + contrast | a negative derivative | polite but ___ (unhelpful) |
| although, despite | an opposite meaning is expected | ___ of the danger (unaware) |
| again / once more | the re- prefix | She had to ___ it (rewrite) |
| too much / excessively | the over- prefix | He ___ everything (overthinks) |
Bir kelimenin türünü çoğu zaman son ekinden tahmin edebilirsin: -tion/-ment → isim, -ful/-ive → sıfat, -ly → zarf, -ise/-ify → fiil.
Ekler her zaman düz mantıkla çalışmaz; bazı türevlerin anlamı beklenenden kayar. Bir eki 'ekledim, oldu' diye düşünmek C1 seviyesinde tuzaktır. En kritik incelikler:
1) -less her zaman -ful'un tersi değildir
2) İki farklı olumsuz önek, iki farklı anlam
3) Aynı kökten iki sıfat, farklı anlam
You can often guess a word's class from its suffix: -tion/-ment → noun, -ful/-ive → adjective, -ly → adverb, -ise/-ify → verb.
Affixes do not always work by straight logic; the meaning of some derivatives shifts more than expected. Thinking 'I added an affix, done' is a trap at C1 level. The most critical nuances:
1) -less is not always the opposite of -ful
2) Two different negative prefixes, two different meanings
3) Two adjectives from the same root, different meanings
English
Meaning and class change happen with both a prefix and a suffix; the prefix at the front, the suffix at the end: un-happi-ness.
Turkish
Derivation runs mainly with suffixes and agglutination from the end; negation is mostly not with a prefix but with -sız: mutlu → mutsuz, mutluluk.
Turkish is also an 'affixing language', so the logic feels familiar; but there are clear differences between the two languages that Turkish learners often stumble on. In Turkish there is usually a single way to negate (-siz, değil, -me); in English many prefixes that vary by origin compete.
- In Turkish, negation is mostly a single form with -siz (dikkatsiz) or değil; in English you have to choose the one that fits the root from un-/in-/im-/il-/ir-/dis-.
- In Turkish an adverb often has the same form as the adjective (hızlı koştu); in English an adverb needs a separate suffix: -ly (ran quickly). Using an adjective in place of an adverb is a frequent error.
- In Turkish '-lık' does a lot of work on its own; in English, for the same 'nominalisation' you have to know the right one among -tion/-ment/-ness/-ity — memorisation and familiarity are essential.
- In English a prefix does not change the class; in Turkish -sız also makes the root an adjective, but the 'stays the same class' rule is clear for every prefix as in English.
Önekler ve sonekler, birkaç yakın konuyla iç içedir. Karıştırmamak için sınırları netleştirelim.
| Konu | Ne yapar | Örnek | Fark |
|---|---|---|---|
| Önekler & Sonekler | Köke ek ekler | happy → unhappily | Tek kelime içinde ek ekleme |
| Kelime türetme | Ekleri sistemli türetmeye döker (sınav görevi) | inform → information | Aynı mantığın uygulama/sınav yönü — bkz. Kelime Türetme |
| Karıştırılan kelimeler | Biçimce/anlamca yakın çiftler | affect / effect | Ek değil, çift ayrımı — bkz. Karıştırılan Kelimeler |
| Eşdizimler (collocations) | Doğal kelime eşleşmeleri | make a decision | Ek değil, hangi kelimenin hangiyle geldiği — bkz. Eş Dizimler (Collocations) |
Prefixes and suffixes are intertwined with a few close topics. To avoid confusion, let's clarify the boundaries.
| Topic | What it does | Example | Difference |
|---|---|---|---|
| Prefixes & Suffixes | Adds an affix to a root | happy → unhappily | Adding an affix within a single word |
| Word formation | Turns affixes into systematic derivation (an exam task) | inform → information | The application/exam side of the same logic — see Word Formation |
| Confusable words | Pairs close in form/meaning | affect / effect | Not an affix, but distinguishing a pair — see Confusable Words |
| Collocations | Natural word pairings | make a decision | Not an affix, but which word goes with which — see Collocations |
Olumsuzluk önekini rastgele seçme: köke göre değişir. *inpossible değil impossible; *unlegal değil illegal; *disregular değil irregular.
Choosing the negative prefix at random: it depends on the root. Not *inpossible but impossible; not *unlegal but illegal; not *disregular but irregular.
Ekler büyük ölçüde düzenlidir ama önemli istisnalar vardır. Kuralı mutlak sanmak, tam da bu noktalarda hata yaptırır.
- Her -ly ile biten kelime zarf değildir: friendly, lovely, lonely, silly, ugly aslında SIFATTIR (bunların zarfı yoktur; 'in a friendly way' denir).
- Bazı sıfatların zarfı biçim değiştirmez ya da özeldir: good → well, fast → fast, hard → hard (hardly = 'neredeyse hiç', tamamen farklı anlam).
- Bazı 'in-' önekleri olumsuz değildir: invaluable = çok değerli, inflammable = kolay tutuşur (flammable ile aynı).
- İki 'l' tuzağı: full sonek olunca tek l (-ful: helpful), ama -ful + -ly çift l olur (helpfully).
Affixes are largely regular, but there are important exceptions. Thinking the rule is absolute is exactly what causes errors at these points.
- Not every word ending in -ly is an adverb: friendly, lovely, lonely, silly, ugly are actually ADJECTIVES (they have no adverb form; you say 'in a friendly way').
- Some adjectives' adverbs do not change form or are special: good → well, fast → fast, hard → hard (hardly = 'almost not', a completely different meaning).
- Some 'in-' prefixes are not negative: invaluable = extremely valuable, inflammable = easily ignites (same as flammable).
- The two 'l' trap: full as a suffix has a single l (-ful: helpful), but -ful + -ly becomes double l (helpfully).
Akademik yazımda ekler özellikle değerlidir çünkü fiil ağırlıklı günlük anlatımı, isim ağırlıklı ve nesnel akademik üsluba çevirmeye yararlar (buna 'nominalisation' denir). 'They decided quickly' yerine 'The decision was rapid' demek, metni daha resmî ve yoğun kılar. Ayrıca ir-/im-/dis- gibi önekler, iddiaları ölçülü biçimde çürütmeye yarar (inconsistent, insignificant, disproportionate).
- reliability = rely + -able + -ity: fiil → sıfat → isim zinciri.
- consistency = consistent + -ency; inconsistency = in- ile olumsuzu.
- reproducible = re- (yeniden) + produce + -ible.
- reproducibility = -ity ile isimleştirme (nominalisation).
- impossible = im- (in-'in p önündeki biçimi).
- independently = in- + depend + -ent + -ly: önek + iki sonek.
In academic writing affixes are especially valuable because they help turn verb-heavy everyday narration into the noun-heavy, objective academic style (this is called 'nominalisation'). Saying 'The decision was rapid' instead of 'They decided quickly' makes the text more formal and dense. Also, prefixes like ir-/im-/dis- serve to refute claims in a measured way (inconsistent, insignificant, disproportionate).
- reliability = rely + -able + -ity: a verb → adjective → noun chain.
- consistency = consistent + -ency; inconsistency = its negative with in-.
- reproducible = re- (again) + produce + -ible.
- reproducibility = nominalisation with -ity.
- impossible = im- (the form of in- before p).
- independently = in- + depend + -ent + -ly: a prefix + two suffixes.
- unprepared = un- + prepare + -ed: hazırlıksız (önek + sonek).
- disorganised = dis- + organise + -d: düzensiz.
- incomplete = in- + complete: eksik (Latin kök).
- misread = mis- (yanlış) + read: yanlış okumak.
- reorganise / rewrite = re- (yeniden) öneki, tür değişmez (fiil).
- reliable / dependable = -able soneki 'güvenilir' anlamı; ikisi eşanlamlı.
- carefully / clearly / logically = sıfat + -ly zarfları.
- impossible → manageable, overwhelming → solvable: anlam zıtlaşması ek ile.
- unbelievable = un- + believe + -able: inanılmaz.
- inexperienced = in- + experience + -ed: deneyimsiz.
- unprepared = un- + prepare + -ed: unprepared (prefix + suffix).
- disorganised = dis- + organise + -d: disorganised.
- incomplete = in- + complete: incomplete (Latin root).
- misread = mis- (wrongly) + read: to misread.
- reorganise / rewrite = the re- (again) prefix, the class does not change (verb).
- reliable / dependable = the -able suffix 'trustworthy' meaning; the two are synonyms.
- carefully / clearly / logically = adjective + -ly adverbs.
- impossible → manageable, overwhelming → solvable: meaning reversal via affixes.

Zarf için 'in a friendly way' denir.
The following questions check not rule memorisation but understanding and function. Before answering, think 'is the meaning or the class changing?'.
- Does a prefix or a suffix usually change the word class?A suffix; a prefix mostly changes only the meaning.
- What word class is 'unhappy', and did the class change when the prefix was added? It is an adjective; 'happy' was also an adjective, so the prefix did not change the class, it only reversed the meaning.
- Why does 'possible' become 'impossible', not 'unpossible'?Because it is Latinate and starts with p, the prefix in- turns into im-.
- What is the difference between 'careful' and 'carefully'?careful is an adjective (modifies a noun), carefully is an adverb (modifies a verb) — the -ly suffix changes the class.
- Are 'disinterested' and 'uninterested' the same? No; disinterested = impartial/without self-interest, uninterested = not interested.
- Is 'friendly' an adverb? No; although it ends in -ly it is an adjective. For an adverb you say 'in a friendly way'.

Görev: 'A time I felt unprepared' (Hazırlıksız hissettiğim bir an) başlıklı 120-150 kelimelik bir paragraf yaz. Amaç: mümkün olduğunca çok önek ve sonek türevini doğal biçimde kullanmak.
- En az 4 olumsuzluk öneki kullan (un-/in-/im-/dis- vb.): unprepared, unclear, impossible, disorganised...
- En az 3 sonekle isim üret (-tion/-ment/-ness/-ity): decision, improvement, nervousness...
- En az 3 zarf kullan (-ly): carefully, slowly, finally...
- Bir anlam öneği ekle (re-/mis-/over-): rewrite, misread, overthink...
Task: Write a 120-150 word paragraph titled 'A time I felt unprepared'. The aim: to use as many prefix and suffix derivatives as possible naturally.
- Use at least 4 negative prefixes (un-/in-/im-/dis- etc.): unprepared, unclear, impossible, disorganised...
- Produce at least 3 nouns with suffixes (-tion/-ment/-ness/-ity): decision, improvement, nervousness...
- Use at least 3 adverbs (-ly): carefully, slowly, finally...
- Add a meaning prefix (re-/mis-/over-): rewrite, misread, overthink...
Concept-check questions: Don't ask the student the rule; ask the function. Questions like 'Does this gap want a noun or an adjective?', 'Did this prefix change the meaning or the class?', 'Is friendly an adverb?' test the concept, not memorisation. Review the adjective/adverb distinction briefly every lesson — it is Turkish learners' number-one mistake.
Classroom activity: 'Word family race' — write a root on the board (e.g. decide), and groups produce as many derivatives as possible in 3 minutes (decision, decisive, decisively, indecisive, undecided). The most correct derivatives + correct spelling wins. Then a matching game with 'prefix/suffix cards': root cards + affix cards are matched, and the resulting word is used in a sentence.
- Önek kelimenin başına gelir, çoğunlukla anlamı değiştirir, türü değiştirmez: happy → unhappy (yine sıfat).
- Sonek kelimenin sonuna gelir, çoğunlukla sözcük türünü değiştirir: inform → information (isim), care → careful (sıfat), quick → quickly (zarf).
- Olumsuzluk önekleri köke bağlıdır: un- (en genel), in-/im-/il-/ir- (Latin kökler, benzeşmeli), dis-, non-.
- Anlam önekleri: re- (tekrar), mis- (yanlış), over- (aşırı), under- (yetersiz), pre- (önce).
- İsim sonekleri (-tion/-ment/-ness/-ity) sınavda en sık; zarf için neredeyse her zaman -ly gerekir.
- Yazım: y → i (happy→happily), sessiz e düşer (use→usable), vurgulu hecede ünsüz çiftlenir (begin→beginner); -ful tek l, -fully çift l.
- Tuzaklar: friendly/lovely sıfattır; disinterested ≠ uninterested; invaluable/inflammable olumsuz değildir; publicly (publically değil).
- Sınav taktiği: Önce türü belirle → soneki seç → olumsuzsa doğru öneki ekle → yazımı kontrol et. Sistemli türetme için Kelime Türetme, karıştırılan biçimler için Karıştırılan Kelimeler ile çalış.
- A prefix comes at the start of a word, mostly changes the meaning, not the class: happy → unhappy (still an adjective).
- A suffix comes at the end of a word, mostly changes the word class: inform → information (noun), care → careful (adjective), quick → quickly (adverb).
- Negative prefixes depend on the root: un- (the most general), in-/im-/il-/ir- (Latin roots, with assimilation), dis-, non-.
- Meaning prefixes: re- (again), mis- (wrongly), over- (excessively), under- (insufficiently), pre- (before).
- Noun suffixes (-tion/-ment/-ness/-ity) are the most frequent in exams; for an adverb you almost always need -ly.
- Spelling: y → i (happy→happily), silent e drops (use→usable), the consonant doubles in a stressed syllable (begin→beginner); -ful one l, -fully two l.
- Traps: friendly/lovely are adjectives; disinterested ≠ uninterested; invaluable/inflammable are not negatives; publicly (not publically).
- Exam tactic: First determine the class → choose the suffix → if negative, add the correct prefix → check the spelling. For systematic derivation work with Word Formation, and for confused forms with Confusable Words.
