Yeterlilik modalleri, birinin bir şeyi yapabilme gücünü, becerisini ya da içinde bulunduğu koşulların o şeye olanak tanıyıp tanımadığını anlatır. Türkçede bunu tek bir ekle, -ebilmek / -abilmek ile söyleriz: yüz-ebil-mek, konuş-abil-mek, gel-ebil-mek. İngilizcede ise bunun için ayrı bir yardımcı fiil ordusu vardır: can, could ve be able to.
- Doğuştan ya da öğrenilmiş beceri: I can play the guitar. (Gitar çalabilirim.)
- Fiziksel/zihinsel güç: Can you lift this? (Bunu kaldırabilir misin?)
- Koşulların verdiği olanak: We can meet tomorrow. (Yarın buluşabiliriz.)
- Duyusal algı: I can see the sea from here. (Buradan denizi görebiliyorum.)
- Öğrenilebilir yatkınlık: She can solve hard puzzles. (Zor bulmacaları çözebiliyor.)
can — bugün
Bugünkü beceri, güç ve olanak: I can swim.
could — dün
Geçmişteki genel yetenek: I could swim at five.
will be able to — yarın
Gelecekteki beceri; will can yoktur.
Türk öğrenci için asıl zorluk şudur: Türkçede tek bir ek her zamanda iş görür (yapabilirim, yapabildim, yapabileceğim), ama İngilizcede geçmiş ve gelecek için yardımcı fiil değişir ve hatta beceri tek seferlik bir başarı mı yoksa genel bir yetenek mi olduğuna göre bile değişir. Bu inceliği erken fark etmek, ileride en çok yapılan hatanın ("will can", "yesterday I could...") önüne geçer. Şimdilik tek cümlede özetle: can bugünün, could dünün, will be able to yarının aracıdır; gerisi bu iskeletin üstüne kurulur.
Ability modals express whether a person has theability — the power or skill — to do something, or whether the circumstances they are in grant anopportunity for it. In Turkish we say this with a single suffix,-ebilmek / -abilmek :yüz-ebil-mek, konuş-abil-mek, gel-ebil-mek. In English, however, there is a whole army of separate auxiliaries for this:can, could andbe able to. So English spreads across three separate tools the job Turkish handles with one suffix; which tool you choose depends onthe tense andthe type of event.
Why does this structure exist? Because between merelyyapmak an action andyapabilmek being able to do it there is a big difference in meaning.I swim(Yüzerim) is a habit, an action I do regularly;I can swim(Yüzebilirim), on the other hand, states not the action itself but that I have thepower/capacity for that action, that I possess a skill. To carry this subtle but important distinction, English needs modal verbs; without a modal the sentence says 'I am doing it' but cannot say 'I am able to do it'.
- Innate or learnedskill: I can play the guitar. (Gitar çalabilirim.)
- Physical/mentalpower: Can you lift this? (Bunu kaldırabilir misin?)
- Circumstance-givenopportunity: We can meet tomorrow. (Yarın buluşabiliriz.)
- Sensory perception: I can see the sea from here. (Buradan denizi görebiliyorum.)
- Learnable aptitude: She can solve hard puzzles. (Zor bulmacaları çözebiliyor.)
can— today
Present ability, power, and opportunity:I can swim.
could— yesterday
Past general ability:I could swim at five.
will be able to— tomorrow
Future ability;will candoes not exist.
The real difficulty for Turkish learners is this: in Turkish a single suffix works in every tense (yapabilirim, yapabildim, yapabileğim), but in English the auxiliary for the past and the futurechanges, and it even changes according to whether the ability is aone-off achievementor ageneral ability. Noticing this subtlety early prevents the most common later mistakes ("will can", "yesterday I could..."). For now, sum it up in one sentence:can is the tool of today, could of yesterday, will be able to of tomorrow; everything else is built on this skeleton.
- can = bugünkü / genel beceri ve olanak: I can cook.
- can't (cannot) = beceri/olanak yokluğu: I can't cook.
- Modalden sonra fiil yalın haldedir: to yok, -s yok, -ing yok → She can swim (❌ can swims / can to swim).
- could = geçmişteki genel beceri: I could swim at five.
- Geçmişte tek seferlik bir başarı için could değil, was/were able to ya da managed to: She was able to catch the train.
- be able to, can'in gramer olarak kullanılamadığı yerlerde devreye girer: gelecek (will be able to), perfect (have been able to), mastarlı yapılar (to be able to).
- Gelecek için will can YOKTUR → will be able to.
- Could you...? / Can you...? aynı zamanda kibar rica kalıbıdır (could daha kibar).
- Olumsuzda geçmişteki tek olay için couldn't serbesttir: I couldn't open it.
- Algı fiilleri (see, hear, feel...) genellikle can ister ve -ing almaz: I can hear you.
- Aynı fiiller olasılık için de kullanılır; o anlam ayrı bir konudur → Olasılık (may / might / could).
- can= present / general ability and opportunity:I can cook.
- can't (cannot)= lack of ability/opportunity:I can't cook.
- After a modal, the verb is in thebaseform: no to, no -s, no -ing →She can swim (❌ can swims / can to swim).
- could= a pastgeneralability:I could swim at five.
- For aone-offachievement in the past, not could butwas/were able to ormanaged to: She was able to catch the train.
- be able tosteps in where can cannot be used grammatically: the future (will be able to), perfect (have been able to), infinitive structures (to be able to).
- For the future, will canDOES NOT EXIST →will be able to.
- Could you...? / Can you...?is also the polite-request pattern (could is more polite).
- For a single past event in the negative, couldn'tis unrestricted:I couldn't open it.
- Perception verbs (see, hear, feel...) usually takecanand don't take -ing:I can hear you.
- The same verbs are also used for possibility; that meaning is a separate topic →Possibility (may / might / could).
Olumlu cümle
Özne + can/could + fiil(yalın) + ... Modal özneye göre değişmez; hiçbir öznede -s almaz ve peşinden gelen fiil de -s almaz. Bu, İngilizce dilbilgisinin en sağlam kurallarından biridir: modal fiiller tek biçimlidir, yani I/you/he/she/we/they hepsinde aynı kalır. Türkçedeki 'yapabilir-im, yapabilir-sin, yapabilir' gibi kişi ekleri İngilizce modalde yoktur.
Olumsuz cümle
Özne + cannot/can't (couldn't) + fiil. Olumsuzda do/does/did KULLANILMAZ; olumsuzluk doğrudan modale eklenir. Yazıda cannot tek kelime, bitişiktir (❌ can not iki kelime resmî yazıda tercih edilmez). Konuşmada ve gündelik yazıda can't kısaltması normaldir; geçmiş için couldn't kullanılır.
Soru cümlesi
Can/Could + özne + fiil + ...? Modal cümlenin başına geçer; yardımcı fiil (do/does/did) eklenmez. Bu 'ters çevirme' (inversion) modal soruların temelidir: modal ile özne yer değiştirir, gerisi aynı kalır. Wh- soruda soru kelimesi en başa gelir: What can you do?
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Can you swim? | Yes, I can. | No, I can't. |
| Could she drive then? | Yes, she could. | No, she couldn't. |
| Will you be able to come? | Yes, I will. | No, I won't. |
Affirmative sentence
Subject + can/could + verb (base) + ...The modal doesn't change with the subject; it never takes -s with any subject, and the verb that follows doesn't take -s either. This is one of the firmest rules of English grammar: modal verbs aresingle-form, i.e. they stay the same for I/you/he/she/we/they. The person endings of Turkish, like 'yapabilir-im, yapabilir-sin, yapabilir', do not exist on the English modal.
Negative sentence
Subject + cannot/can't (couldn't) + verb.In the negative,do/does/didis NOT used; negation is added directly to the modal. In writing, cannotis one word, joined (❌ can not as two words is not preferred in formal writing). In speech and casual writing, can'tcontraction is normal; for the past, couldn'tis used.
Question sentence
Can/Could + subject + verb + ...?The modal moves to the front of the sentence; no auxiliary (do/does/did) is added. This 'inversion' is the basis of modal questions: the modal and the subject swap places, and the rest stays the same. In a Wh- question, the question word comes first:What can you do?
| Question | Affirmative short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Can you swim? | Yes, I can. | No, I can't. |
| Could she drive then? | Yes, she could. | No, she couldn't. |
| Will you be able to come? | Yes, I will. | No, I won't. |
1) Öğrenilmiş beceri ve yetenek
En temel kullanım budur: bir kişinin öğrenerek ya da doğuştan sahip olduğu, kalıcı bir yeteneği anlatmak. Burada odak zaman değil, kişinin elindeki beceridir; bu yüzden bugün geçerli bir yetenek için daima can kullanılır. Yeteneğin ne zaman kazanıldığı önemli değildir, şu an var olması yeter.
Türkçe cümlede -ebil / -abil ekini duyduğun an alarm çalsın: İngilizcede can / could / be able to'dan biri gerekir.
4) Duyusal algı (see, hear, feel, smell, taste)
İngilizcede algı fiilleri şu an devam eden bir algıyı anlatmak için genellikle can + fiil ile kullanılır; bu fiiller çoğunlukla -ing almaz çünkü algı zaten anlıktır ve süreç değil durum bildirir. Türkçeye çoğu zaman düz şimdiki zamanla "görüyorum, duyuyorum" diye çevrilir, ama İngilizce burada can'i tercih eder. Bu yüzden I am seeing/hearing genellikle yanlıştır.
5) Rica, teklif ve izin (nezaket)
Can/could yalnızca 'yapabilme' değil, birinden bir şey isterken ya da birine bir şey teklif ederken de kullanılır. Burada modal artık beceriyi değil iletişimin tonunu ayarlar: could, can'e göre daha kibar ve daha mesafelidir. Rica ederken could, izin isterken can/could, teklif ederken can/shall sık kullanılır.
1) Learned skill and ability
This is the most basic use: expressing a permanent ability a person has, whether learned or innate. Here the focus is nottime, but theskill the person has; that is why, for an ability valid today, we always usecan. When the ability was acquired doesn't matter; it is enough that it exists now.
In a Turkish sentence, the moment you hear the-ebil / -abil suffix, let the alarm ring: in English, one ofcan / could / be able toone of them is required.
2) Physical power and capacity
Can also expresses whether a person or object is currently sufficient — whether physical strength or technical capacity is adequate for a task. A skill is 'learned', while capacity 'is or isn't enough'; both are expressed with can in English because both concern whether a power exists.
3) Opportunity given by circumstances
Sometimes a person has no special skill, but circumstances grant anopportunity for an action. This use is different from skill: the point is not the person's ability but the door the situation opens. Turkish says 'yapabiliriz' for this too; English again uses can, but the meaning is 'we have the opportunity' and it often stands very close to permission.
4) Sensory perception (see, hear, feel, smell, taste)
In English, to express a perception happening right now, perception verbs are usually used withcan + verb; these verbs usually don't take -ing because perception is instantaneous and reports a state, not a process. It is often translated into Turkish with the plain present as "görüyorum, duyuyorum", but English prefers can here. That is whyI am seeing/hearingis usually wrong.
5) Requests, offers, and permission (politeness)
Can/could is used not only for 'ability' but also when asking someone for something or offering something. Here the modal no longer adjusts ability butthe tone of the communication: could is more polite and more distant than can. could is common for requests, can/could for asking permission, and can/shall for offers.
Yeterlilik modallerinde zamanı çoğu zaman modalin kendisi ve cümledeki zaman zarfı birlikte belirler. Aşağıdaki ipuçları yön verir ama garanti değildir — bağlam her zaman önceliklidir. Yine de bu tabloyu ezberlemek, doğru modali refleks olarak seçmene büyük ölçüde yardım eder.
| Zaman | Kullanılan yapı | Sık görülen ipucu kelimeleri | Örnek |
|---|---|---|---|
| Şimdi / genel | can / can't | now, these days, usually, at all | I can help you now. |
| Geçmiş genel beceri | could / couldn't | as a child, when I was young, in those days, always | I could ski when I was ten. |
| Geçmiş tek başarı | was/were able to, managed to | finally, in the end, that time, yesterday | We finally managed to open it. |
| Gelecek | will be able to | soon, next year, one day, by then | I'll be able to drive next month. |
| Perfect | have/has been able to | recently, so far, since, lately | I haven't been able to reach him. |
In ability modals, the time is often determined bythe modal itself together with the time adverb in the sentence. The clues below give direction, but theyare not a guarantee — context always takes priority. Still, memorising this table helps a lot in choosing the right modal as a reflex.
| Time | Structure used | Common signal words | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Present / general | can / can't | now, these days, usually, at all | I can help you now. |
| Past general ability | could / couldn't | as a child, when I was young, in those days, always | I could ski when I was ten. |
| Single past achievement | was/were able to, managed to | finally, in the end, that time, yesterday | We finally managed to open it. |
| Gelecek | will be able to | soon, next year, one day, by then | I'll be able to drive next month. |
| Perfect | have/has been able to | recently, so far, since, lately | I haven't been able to reach him. |
Yeterlilik modallerinin can alıcı noktası şudur: could geçmişte süregelen bir yeteneği anlatır, tek bir olayda o yeteneği fiilen kullanıp başarmayı değil. Olumlu, tek seferlik başarıda bu yüzden could yerine was/were able to ya da managed to kullanırız. Sebep mantıksaldır: could 'kapasite vardı' der ama o kapasitenin belirli bir anda işe yarayıp sonuç verdiğini söylemez; was able to ise tam olarak bunu, 'o an başardı'yı işaretler.
could — süregelen yetenek
Geçmişte var olan genel kapasite: I could hold my breath for two minutes.
was/were able to — tek başarı
Belirli bir anda gerçekleşip sonuç veren başarı: The diver was able to reach the wreck.
İlginç bir asimetri vardır: olumsuzda tek seferlik olayda couldn't tamamen doğaldır. I couldn't open the door hem 'açma yeteneğim yoktu' hem de 'o an açamadım' anlamına serbestçe gelir. Kısıtlama yalnızca olumlu, tek başarı cümlelerindedir. Bunun nedeni şudur: bir şeyi başaramamak zaten o kapasitenin o an işe yaramadığını söyler, dolayısıyla could ile was able to arasındaki fark olumsuzda erir.
Ayrıca algı fiilleriyle (see, hear, feel...) tek seferlik olayda bile could tamamen doğaldır; bu fiiller kural dışıdır: Suddenly I could see the whole valley. (Birden bütün vadiyi görebildim.) Burada was able to zorlama olur. Aynı şey understand, remember gibi zihinsel-durum fiilleri için de kısmen geçerlidir; bunlar 'eylem' değil 'durum' bildirdiği için could ile daha akıcıdır.
| Durum | could | was/were able to | Örnek |
|---|---|---|---|
| Süregelen genel yetenek | ✔ doğru | ✔ olur (nadir) | I could read at four. |
| Belirli bir olayda gerçekleşen başarı | genelde YANLIŞ | ✔ doğru | He was able to escape. |
| Algı/zihin fiili (see, hear, understand) | ✔ doğru | zorlama durur | I could hear a noise. |
| Olumsuz tek olay | ✔ couldn't serbest | ✔ wasn't able to da olur | I couldn't sleep. |
The crucial point about ability modals is this:could expresses, in the past,an ongoing ability — not theactual use and success of that ability in a single event. That is why, for an affirmative one-off achievement, instead of could we usewas/were able to ormanaged to. The reason is logical: could says 'the capacity existed' but doesn't say that this capacity, at a specific moment, actually worked and produced a result; was able to, on the other hand, marks exactly that — 'succeeded at that moment'.
could — ongoing ability
A general capacity that existed in the past:I could hold my breath for two minutes.
was/were able to — single achievement
An achievement that happened and produced a result at a specific moment:The diver was able to reach the wreck.
There is an interesting asymmetry:in the negativein a one-off eventcouldn't is completely natural.I couldn't open the door freely means both 'I had no ability to open it' and 'I couldn't open it at that moment'. The restriction applies only to affirmative, single-achievement sentences. The reason is this: tofail at something already says that the capacity didn't work at that moment, so the difference between could and was able to dissolves in the negative.
Also, with perception verbs (see, hear, feel...), even in a one-off event, could is completely natural; these verbs are an exception:Suddenly I could see the whole valley.(Birden bütün vadiyi görebildim.) Here was able to would sound forced. The same is partly true for mental-state verbs such asunderstand, remember, because they report a 'state' rather than an 'action', they flow more naturally with could.
| Situation | could | was/were able to | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ongoing general ability | ✔ correct | ✔ possible (rare) | I could read at four. |
| Achievement in a specific event | usually WRONG | ✔ correct | He was able to escape. |
| Perception/mental verb (see, hear, understand) | ✔ correct | sounds forced | I could hear a noise. |
| Negative single event | ✔ couldn't is free | ✔ wasn't able to also works | I couldn't sleep. |
Türkçe 'edebileceğim' tek parçadır diye will can deme; iki modal yan yana gelmez → will be able to.
- Türkçe: tek ek, her zaman → yapabilirim / yapabildim / yapabileceğim.
- İngilizce: can (şimdi) / could · was able to (geçmiş, olay tipine göre) / will be able to (gelecek).
- Türkçede olay tipi (genel yetenek mi, tek başarı mı) eki değiştirmez; İngilizcede geçmişte değiştirir.
- Türkçede 'yapabilir miyim' izni de olasılığı da beceriyi de kapsar; İngilizcede bağlam işlevi ayırır.
- Türkçede iki 'yetenek' anlamı üst üste gelebilir (edebilecek); İngilizcede iki modal yan yana gelemez → be able to devreye girer.
Turkish builds ability with a single suffix,-ebil/-abil, with the same logic in all tenses:yap-abil-irim, yap-abil-dim, yap-abil-eceğim. This economy misleads learners: in English the auxiliary changes with tense and event type. Because the Turkish-speaking mind expects 'one suffix everywhere', it looks for a single word in English too (often mistakenly 'can'); yet English changes its tool according to tense.
Because the Turkish 'edebileceğim' is a single piece, will candon't say; two modals can't stand side by side →will be able to.
- Turkish: one suffix, always →yapabilirim / yapabildim / yapabileceğim.
- English:can(present) /could · was able to(past, depending on event type) /will be able to(future).
- In Turkish, the event type (general ability or one-off achievement) doesn't change the suffix; in English it changes it in the past.
- In Turkish, 'yapabilir miyim' covers permission, possibility, and ability alike; in English, context separates the function.
- In Turkish two 'ability' meanings can stack (edebilecek); in English two modals cannot stand together → be able to steps in.
Aynı yardımcı fiiller (can/could) birden çok işlevde çalışır ve bu, İngilizceyi zorlaştıran şeydir: aynı kelime cümleden cümleye 'yapabilme', 'olasılık' ya da 'izin' anlatabilir. İşlevi belirleyen şey kelimenin kendisi değil, bağlam ve özne-fiil ilişkisidir. Örneğin She can drive beceriyi anlatırken It can get cold here genel bir olasılığı/eğilimi, You can go now ise izni anlatır. Aşağıdaki tablo yeterlilik anlamını komşu işlevlerden ayırır; asıl beceri, doğru işlevi bağlamdan okuyabilmektir.
| Yapı | İşlev | Örnek | Türkçe |
|---|---|---|---|
| can/could (beceri) | yapabilme | I can swim. | Yüzebilirim. |
| can/could (olasılık) | -abilir (ihtimal) | It could rain later. | Sonra yağabilir. |
| can/could (izin) | izin | You can leave now. | Şimdi gidebilirsin. |
| be able to | beceri (her zaman) | I'll be able to come. | Gelebileceğim. |
| manage to | zorlukla başarma | I managed to finish. | Bitirmeyi başardım. |
The same auxiliaries (can/could) work in more than one function, and that is what makes English hard: the same word can express 'ability', 'possibility', or 'permission' from sentence to sentence. What determines the function is not the word itself butthe context and the subject-verb relationship. For example,She can drive expresses ability, whileIt can get cold here expresses a general possibility/tendency, andYou can go now expresses permission. The table below separates the ability meaning from neighbouring functions; the real skill is being able to read the correct function from context.
| Structure | Function | Example | Turkish |
|---|---|---|---|
| can/could (ability) | ability | I can swim. | Yüzebilirim. |
| can/could (possibility) | -abilir (possibility) | It could rain later. | Sonra yağabilir. |
| can/could (permission) | permission | You can leave now. | Şimdi gidebilirsin. |
| be able to | ability (all tenses) | I'll be able to come. | Gelebileceğim. |
| manage to | achieving with difficulty | I managed to finish. | Bitirmeyi başardım. |
Yeterlilik modalinin bazı özel durumları vardır; bunlar kuralın 'ince yazısıdır' ve genellikle B2 üstünde önem kazanır. Aşağıda en çok karşılaşılan iki büyük istisnayı ayrıntılı ele alıyoruz, sonra kalanları listeliyoruz.
İstisna 1: Algı ve zihin fiilleri
Algı fiilleri (see, hear, feel, smell, taste) ve bazı zihin fiilleri (understand, remember) tek seferlik olumlu bir olayda bile could ile serbesttir; burada was able to kuralı işlemez. Sebep şudur: bu fiiller bir 'eylemi başarmayı' değil, bir 'durumun oluşmasını' anlatır. Görmek bir sonuç değil, kendiliğinden gerçekleşen bir algıdır; bu yüzden Suddenly I could see the exit tamamen doğaldır ve was able to zorlama durur.
İstisna 2: could have + V3 (kaçırılmış olanak)
could have + fiilin 3. hali (V3) yapısı artık 'yeterlilik' anlatmaz; geçmişte var olan ama kullanılmayan bir olanağı, çoğu zaman sitem ya da pişmanlık tonuyla anlatır: 'yapabilirdi ama yapmadı'. Bu, beceriden farklı bir dünyadır; öğrenci could ile could have'i karıştırırsa anlam tümüyle kayar. Bu kalıp koşul cümleleriyle de sık kurulur (üçüncü tip if).
- can gelecekte kesin/planlı olanak için kullanılabilir: I can see you tomorrow. (Yarın görüşebiliriz.) — burada will be able to şart değildir.
- Resmî yazıda 'can't' yerine cannot; çok resmî ricada would you be able to...? tercih edilir.
- be able to mastar ve -ing gereken yerlerde tek seçenektir: I'd love to be able to ski. / Being able to drive is useful.
- could koşul cümlelerinde 'yapabilirdi' anlamında da geçer: If I had time, I could help.
The ability modal has some special cases; these are the 'fine print' of the rule and usually matter above B2. Below we treat the two most common major exceptions in detail, then list the rest.
Exception 1: Perception and mental verbs
Perception verbs (see, hear, feel, smell, taste) and some mental verbs (understand, remember), even in a one-off affirmative event, are free withcould; here the was able to rule doesn't apply. The reason: these verbs express not 'achieving an action' but 'a state coming about'. Seeing is not a result but a perception that happens by itself; that is whySuddenly I could see the exit is completely natural and was able to sounds forced.
Exception 2: could have + V3 (missed opportunity)
could have + the 3rd form of the verb (V3)This structure no longer expresses 'ability'; it expresses an opportunity that existed in the past but wasnot used — often with a tone of reproach or regret: 'he could have done it but didn't'. This is a different world from ability; if a learner confuses could with could have, the meaning shifts entirely. This pattern is also often built with conditional sentences (third-type if).
- cancan be used for a certain/planned opportunity in the future:I can see you tomorrow. (Yarın görüşebiliriz.) — here will be able to is not required.
- In formal writing, instead of 'can't',cannot; in very formal requests, would you be able to...?is preferred.
- be able tois the only option where an infinitive or -ing is needed:I'd love to be able to ski. / Being able to drive is useful.
- couldalso appears in conditional sentences meaning 'could/would be able to':If I had time, I could help.
Akademik ve resmî yazıda be able to, can'e göre daha tercih edilir; çünkü zamanlar arasında tutarlı biçimde çekilebilir ve daha nesnel bir ton verir. Kısaltma can't yerine cannot yazılır. Sonuç bildiren cümlelerde was/were able to başarının fiilen gerçekleştiğini net biçimde işaretler; bu, deney ve araştırma raporlarında önemlidir çünkü 'yapabildik' ile 'yaptık ve başardık' arasındaki farkı korur.
- were able to switch = tek seferlik, gerçekleşmiş başarı; akademik sonuç bildirimi.
- were also able to ignore = ikinci gerçekleşmiş bulgu; be able to tutarlı biçimde tekrar ediyor.
- could not establish = olumsuz, tek olayda couldn't/could not serbest.
- cannot rule out = resmî yazıda bitişik cannot, nesnel ton.
- will be able to = gelecekteki olanak, 'will can' değil.
- can be regarded = genel olanak/kabul edilebilirlik; edilgen yapıyla nesnel ton.
- should be able to interpret = tavsiye + olanak birleşimi; be able to mastar bağlamında.
In academic and formal writing,be able to, can is preferred over it, because it can be conjugated consistently across tenses and gives a more objective tone. The contractioncan'tis replaced bycannot in writing. In result-reporting sentences,was/were able to clearly marks that the success actually happened; this matters in experiment and research reports because it preserves the difference between 'we could' and 'we did and succeeded'.
- were able to switch = a one-off, realised achievement; an academic result statement.
- were also able to ignore = a second realised finding; be able to repeats consistently.
- could not establish = negative; in a single event couldn't/could not is free.
- cannot rule out = joined cannot in formal writing, an objective tone.
- will be able to = future opportunity, not 'will can'.
- can be regarded = general possibility/acceptability; an objective tone with the passive.
- should be able to interpret = a combination of advice + ability; be able to in an infinitive context.
- could barely order / could understand = geçmiş genel beceri → could doğru.
- couldn't follow / was not able to make = olumsuz beceri; couldn't ve wasn't able to ikisi de doğru.
- was often not able to catch = tekrarlanan olumsuz durum; be able to ile.
- could only say / was able to describe = düşük yetenekten gerçekleşen başarıya geçiş.
- was finally able to tell = tek seferlik, gerçekleşmiş başarı ('finally' işaretli) → could DEĞİL.
- can switch / can joke / can help = bugünkü beceriler, can ile.
- will be able to start = gelecek olanak; 'will can' değil.
- could never have imagined = could have + V3, geçmişte var olmayan olanak/hayal.
- can't spell / can't understand = bugünkü becerisizlik, can't ile.
- could barely order / could understand = past general ability → could is correct.
- couldn't follow / was not able to make = negative ability; both couldn't and wasn't able to are correct.
- was often not able to catch = a repeated negative situation; with be able to.
- could only say / was able to describe = a shift from low ability to a realised achievement.
- was finally able to tell = a one-off, realised achievement (marked by 'finally') → NOT could.
- can switch / can joke / can help = present abilities, with can.
- will be able to start = future opportunity; not 'will can'.

Aşağıdaki sorular kuralın kelimesini değil, anlamını yoklar. Cümledeki modalin hangi anlamı taşıdığını düşün; ezber değil, muhakeme iste kendinden.
- "He was able to finish the marathon." — Bu bir genel yetenek mi, tek seferlik başarı mı?Tek seferlik başarı: belirli bir maratonu bitirdi. Bu yüzden could değil was able to.
- "She could play the piano when she was six." — Olay bir kez mi oldu?Hayır, süregelen genel bir yetenek; bu yüzden could uygun.
- "I couldn't open the jar." — Bu cümlede tek olayda couldn't neden serbest?Olumsuz tek olaylarda couldn't kısıtsızdır; was able to kısıtı yalnızca olumlu cümleleri bağlar.
- "You could be right." — Burada could beceri mi anlatır?Hayır, olasılık anlatır ('haklı olabilirsin'); bu yeterlilik değil, ihtimaldir.
- "I will can help." nesi yanlış ve doğrusu ne?İki modal yan yana gelemez; doğrusu 'I will be able to help.'
- "Suddenly I could hear music." — Tek olay olmasına rağmen could neden doğru?hear bir algı fiilidir; algı fiilleri tek olayda bile could ile serbesttir, was able to zorlama olur.
The questions below test not the wording of the rule butits meaning. Think about which meaning the modal carries in the sentence; ask yourself for reasoning, not memorisation.
- "He was able to finish the marathon." — Is this a general ability or a one-off achievement?A one-off achievement: he finished a specific marathon. That is why it's was able to, not could.
- "She could play the piano when she was six." — Did the event happen once? No, an ongoing general ability; that is why could is appropriate.
- "I couldn't open the jar." — Why is couldn't free here in a single event? In negative single events couldn't is unrestricted; the was able to restriction binds only affirmative sentences.
- "You could be right." — Does could express ability here? No, it expresses possibility ('you might be right'); this is not ability but probability.
- "I will can help." — What is wrong, and what is the correct form? Two modals cannot stand together; the correct form is 'I will be able to help.'
- "Suddenly I could hear music." — Why is could correct despite being a single event?hear is a perception verb; perception verbs are free with could even in a single event, and was able to would sound forced.

Görev: Kendini tanıtan, becerilerini anlatan 6-8 cümlelik bir paragraf yaz. En az bir can, bir can't, bir could (çocukluk), bir was/were able to (tek bir başarı) ve bir will be able to (gelecek hedef) kullan.
- Bugün hangi şeyleri iyi yapabiliyorsun? (can)
- Ne yapamıyorsun ama öğrenmek istiyorsun? (can't → will be able to)
- Çocukken yapabildiğin bir şey neydi? (could)
- Zorlanıp da sonunda başardığın belirli bir an neydi? (was/were able to / managed to)
Task:Write a 6-8 sentence paragraph introducing yourself and describing your abilities. Use at least onecan, onecan't, onecould (childhood), onewas/were able to (a single achievement), and onewill be able to(a future goal).
- What things can you do well today? (can)
- What can't you do but want to learn? (can't → will be able to)
- What was something you could do as a child? (could)
- What was a specific moment when you struggled but finally succeeded? (was/were able to / managed to)
Kritik kavram sıçraması geçmiştedir: 'genel yetenek (could)' ile 'tek başarı (was able to)' ayrımı. Bunu bir sahne ile öğretin — 'Çocukken yüzebiliyordum' (yetenek) vs 'Dün nehri yüzerek geçtim' (olay). Öğrenciye "bir kez mi oldu, yoksa süregelen bir şey mi?" sorusunu refleks haline getirin.
- Kavram kontrol sorusu: "Bir kez mi oldu?" — Evetse olumluda could olmaz.
- Sık hata avı: 'will can' ve 'can to' — tahtaya kırmızıyla yazıp birlikte düzeltin.
- Etkinlik: 'Find someone who can...' bingo — sınıfta dolaşıp Can you...? sorusuyla imza toplama.
- Üretim köprüsü: kişisel 'beceri zaman çizelgesi' (geçmiş could → bugün can → gelecek will be able to).
- Telaffuz mini-drilli: can /kın/ ve can't /ka:nt/ ayrımını dinleme-tekrarla çalıştırın.
The critical concept jump is in thepast: the distinction between 'general ability (could)' and 'single achievement (was able to)'. Teach it with a scene — 'I could swim as a child' (ability) vs 'I swam across the river yesterday' (event). Make the question "did it happen once, or was it something ongoing?" a reflex for the student.
- Concept-check question: "Did it happen once?" — If yes, could isn't used in the affirmative.
- Common-error hunt: 'will can' and 'can to' — write them on the board in red and correct them together.
- Activity: 'Find someone who can...' bingo — walking around the class collecting signatures with the Can you...? question.
- Production bridge: a personal 'ability timeline' (past could → present can → future will be able to).
- Pronunciation mini-drill: practise the can /kın/ vs can't /kɑːnt/ distinction with listen-and-repeat.
- Yeterlilik = yapabilme/beceri/olanak; Türkçe karşılığı -ebil/-abil ekidir.
- Modalden sonra fiil yalın: to yok, -s yok, -ing yok.
- Modal soruda 'do' kullanmaz, olumsuzda 'don't' kullanmaz: Can you...? / can't.
- Bugün için can, geçmiş genel yetenek için could.
- Geçmiş olumlu tek başarı için could DEĞİL, was/were able to ya da managed to.
- Geçmiş olumsuz tek olayda couldn't serbesttir.
- Gelecek için 'will can' YOK → will be able to; perfect için have been able to.
- Algı fiilleri (see/hear) tek olayda bile could ile serbesttir.
- could you...? can'in kibar, mesafeli rica biçimidir.
- Zaman merdiveni: could/was able to (dün) → can (bugün) → will be able to (yarın).
- Aynı fiiller olasılık/izin de anlatır; olasılık için Olasılık (may / might / could).
- Ability = capability/skill/opportunity; the Turkish equivalent is the -ebil/-abil suffix.
- The verb after a modal is base: no to, no -s, no -ing.
- A modal doesn't take 'do' in questions or 'don't' in the negative: Can you...? / can't.
- can for the present, could for past general ability.
- For an affirmative single achievement in the past, NOT could, but was/were able to or managed to.
- In a past negative single event, couldn't is free.
- For the future there is no 'will can' → will be able to; for the perfect, have been able to.
- Perception verbs (see/hear) are free with could even in a single event.
- could you...? is the polite, distant request form of can.
- The tense ladder: could/was able to (yesterday) → can (today) → will be able to (tomorrow).
- The same verbs also express possibility/permission; for possibility,Possibility (may / might / could).
