should
Nazik, nötr öneri: You should rest.
ought to
Aynı öneri, biraz daha nesnel / kural tonu.
had better
Uyarı katar — yap, yoksa kötü sonuç: You'd better hurry.
İngilizce ise bu iki anlamı iki ayrı kelimeyle ayırır: tavsiye için should, güçlü zorunluluk için must / have to (bkz. Zorunluluk (must / have to)). Bu yüzden "-meli" gördüğün her yerde should demek büyük bir tuzaktır.
"-meli" gördüğün her yerde should deme; gerçek zorunluluk için must / have to gerekir.
A friend of yours looks tired and you say to them "you'd better get some rest". This, right here, is a piece ofadvice: you tell the other person what would be the right thing to do for their own good. In English, this job is most often done byshould. Alongside it comeought to andhad better. All three roughly correspond to the Turkish-meli / -malı suffix.
So why are there three structures and not just one word? Because English likes to mark thethe tone andforceof advice with separate words.should is polite and neutral ("I think you'd better do this").ought to says the same thing in a slightly more objective, rule-like tone ("this is the right thing").had better adds a warning: "do this, or something bad will happen."
should
A polite, neutral suggestion:You should rest.
ought to
The same suggestion, in a slightly more objective / rule-like tone.
had better
Adds a warning — do it, or there's a bad consequence:You'd better hurry.
The real difficulty for a Turkish-speaking learner is this: in Turkish the sentence 'gitmelisin' can mean bothadvice andnecessity; we tell the difference from tone of voice and context. English, however, splits these two meanings into two separate words: for advice, should, and for strong obligation, must / have to(seeNecessity (must / have to)). That is why sayingshould everywhere you see "-meli" is a big trap.
Don't automatically writeshould everywhere you see "-meli"; for real obligation, must / have tois needed.
- should tavsiyenin varsayılan yapısıdır: You should drink more water. (Daha çok su içmelisin.)
- Modaldan sonra fiil daima yalın haldedir: should go ✓, should to go ✗, should goes ✗.
- Olumsuz: should not = shouldn't. You shouldn't smoke. (Sigara içmemelisin.)
- Soru: yardımcı fiil öne gelir — Should I…? Should I apologize? (Özür dilesem mi?)
- ought to = should ile neredeyse eş anlamlı, biraz daha resmi. Dikkat: to onun bir parçasıdır — ought to go.
- had better ('d better) = tavsiye + uyarı. You'd better hurry. (Acele etsen iyi olur.) Geleceğe bakar, örtük bir tehdit taşır.
- had better'dan sonra to yoktur: had better go ✓, had better to go ✗.
- Geçmişe yönelik tavsiye/pişmanlık: should have + V3. You should have called. (Aramalıydın.)
- Bu yapılar özneye göre çekilmez: he/she/it'te bile -s almaz — He should… ✓, He shoulds… ✗.
- should is the default structure for advice:You should drink more water.(Daha çok su içmelisin.)
- After a modal the verb is alwaysin the base form: should go ✓, should to go ✗, should goes ✗.
- Negative:should not = shouldn't. You shouldn't smoke.(Sigara içmemelisin.)
- Question: the auxiliary comes first —Should I…? Should I apologize?(Özür dilesem mi?)
- ought to= almost synonymous with should, a bit more formal. Note:to is part of it —ought to go.
- had better ('d better)= advice + warning. You'd better hurry.(Acele etsen iyi olur.) It looks to the future and carries an implicit threat.
- after had better, there is no to: had better go ✓, had better to go ✗.
- Past-oriented advice/regret:should have + V3. You should have called.(Aramalıydın.)
- These structures, according to the subject, are not conjugated: even with he/she/it,-stakes noHe should… ✓, He shoulds… ✗.
Olumlu cümle
Kalıp çok basittir: özne + should / ought to / had better + yalın fiil. Modalden sonra fiil hiçbir zaman to almaz (ought to ve had better'ın kendi içindeki to/'d better bunun istisnası değil, yapının parçasıdır) ve özneye göre -s ile çekilmez.
Modalden sonra fiil yalın: to yok, -s yok. She should go.
Olumsuz cümle
Olumsuz için modalin arkasına not koyarız. En yaygını should not → shouldn't'tır. ought to'nun olumsuzu ought not to (oughtn't to)'dur ama günlük dilde nadirdir; çoğu konuşmacı onun yerine shouldn't der. had better'ın olumsuzu ise ilginçtir: not, better'dan sonra gelir — had better not.
Soru cümlesi
Soruda should özneden önce gelir: Should + özne + fiil? Bu, karşıdan tavsiye istemenin en doğal yoludur. ought to soruda kullanılabilir (Ought I to…?) ama bugün çok resmi ve nadirdir; yerine Should I…? denir. had better soru olarak çok az kullanılır (Hadn't we better…? — eski/resmi).
| Soru | Olumlu kısa cevap | Olumsuz kısa cevap |
|---|---|---|
| Should I call him? | Yes, you should. | No, you shouldn't. |
| Should we wait? | Yes, I think so. / Yes, you should. | No, you'd better not. |
Affirmative sentence
The pattern is very simple:subject + should / ought to / had better + base verb. After a modal the verb never takesto (the to/'d better inside ought to and had better are not exceptions to this but part of the structure), and it is not conjugated for the subject with-s.
After a modal, the verb isbase: tono,-sno.She should go.
Negative sentence
For the negative, after the modal we putnot. The most common isshould not → shouldn't.ought to has the negativeought not to (oughtn't to), but it's rare in everyday use; most speakers sayshouldn't instead.had better's negative is interesting:not comes after 'better' —had better not.
Question sentence
In questions, should comes before the subject:Should + subject + verb? This is the most natural way to ask someone foradvice.ought to can be used in questions (Ought I to…?) but today it's very formal and rare; instead,Should I…?is used.had better is rarely used as a question (Hadn't we better…?— old/formal).
| Question | Affirmative short answer | Negative short answer |
|---|---|---|
| Should I call him? | Yes, you should. | No, you shouldn't. |
| Should we wait? | Yes, I think so. / Yes, you should. | No, you'd better not. |
| Yazılış | Konuşmada duyulan | Not |
|---|---|---|
| should | /ʃʊd/ vurgusuz /ʃəd/ | Vurgusuz cümlede sesli zayıflar: "I should go" → /aɪ ʃəd goʊ/. |
| should have | /ˈʃʊdəv/ → "shoulda" | have burada /əv/'e iner; 'should of' YANLIŞ yazımı bu sesten doğar. |
| shouldn't | /ˈʃʊdənt/ | t sonda çoğu zaman yutulur: /ˈʃʊdən/. |
| ought to | /ˈɔːt tə/ → "oughta" /ˈɔːtə/ | İki t tek sese kaynaşır; günlük Amerikan İngilizcesinde çok yaygın. |
| had better | /həd ˈbetər/ → "'d better" /d ˈbetər/ | had neredeyse tamamen /d/'ye iner; hızlı konuşmada bazen hiç duyulmaz: "You better go." |
Although the spelling of these structures is fixed, in speech most of the sounds blend or weaken. Recognising them when you hear them makes a difference in listening exams (YDS/IELTS/TOEFL).
| Spelling | Heard in speech | Note |
|---|---|---|
| should | /ʃʊd/ vurgusuz /ʃəd/ | The vowel weakens in an unstressed sentence: "I should go" → /aɪ ʃəd goʊ/. |
| should have | /ˈʃʊdəv/ → "shoulda" | have drops to /əv/ here; the WRONG spelling 'should of' comes from this sound. |
| shouldn't | /ˈʃʊdənt/ | the final t is often swallowed: /ˈʃʊdən/. |
| ought to | /ˈɔːt tə/ → "oughta" /ˈɔːtə/ | The two t's blend into one sound; very common in everyday American English. |
| had better | /həd ˈbetər/ → "'d better" /d ˈbetər/ | had reduces almost entirely to /d/; in fast speech it's sometimes not heard at all: "You better go." |
1) Tavsiye ve öneri verme (en yaygın)
Birine ne yapmasının iyi olacağını söylerken should ilk tercihtir. Nazik, bindirmeyen bir öneridir.
2) Tavsiye isteme
Should I / Should we…? kalıbı başkasından yol göstermesini istemenin en doğal yoludur.
4) Nesnel doğruyu / beklentiyi belirtme (ought to)
5) Geçmişe yönelik pişmanlık ve eleştiri (should have + V3)
Geçmişte yapılması gerekip yapılmayan (ya da yapılıp da yapılmaması gereken) şeyi anlatır. should have = pişmanlık; shouldn't have = yapılan şeye pişmanlık.
6) Beklenti / olası sonuç (ileri)
İleri düzeyde should, tavsiye dışında "mantıken böyle olması beklenir" anlamı da taşır.
1) Giving advice and suggestions (most common)
When telling someone what would be good to do,should is the first choice. It's a polite, non-imposing suggestion.
2) Asking for advice
Should I / Should we…? is the most natural way to ask someone else for guidance.
3) Strong advice with a warning (had better)
When you want to add a "or it'll be bad" meaning to advice, had better is what you use. It points to a specific situation in the near future; it's not suitable for general life advice.
4) Stating an objective truth / expectation (ought to)
ought to presents advice less as a personal opinion and more as a generally accepted truth. It's preferred in moral/rule-based contexts.
5) Past-oriented regret and criticism (should have + V3)
Expresses something that should have been done in the past but wasn't (or was done but shouldn't have been).should have = regret;shouldn't have = regret about something that was done.
6) Expectation / likely outcome (advanced)
At an advanced level, should also carries, besides advice, the meaning 'logically this is expected'. It doesn't get confused with advice because it usually doesn't order a person around but predicts something about a situation.
Tavsiye modalleri belli zaman zarflarına bağlı değildir; ama bazı ifadeler tavsiye bağlamını güçlendirir ve sınav sorularında ipucu olabilir.
| İşaret | Ne sinyali verir | Örnek |
|---|---|---|
| If I were you, … | Nazik, dolaylı tavsiye — genelde should ile | If I were you, I'd see a doctor. |
| It's a good idea to … | Öneri; should ile eş anlamlı çevrilir | It's a good idea to rest → You should rest. |
| …, or (else) … | had better'ın örtük sonucunu açığa çıkarır | Hurry, or you'll be late → You'd better hurry. |
| the right thing to do | ought to'nun ahlaki tonunu çağırır | Apologizing is the right thing to do. |
| by now / already | should have ile geçmiş beklenti/pişmanlık | They should have finished by now. |
Advice modals aren't tied to specific time adverbs; but some expressions strengthen the advice context and can be clues in exam questions.
| Signal | Ne sinyali verir | Example |
|---|---|---|
| If I were you, … | Polite, indirect advice — usually with should | If I were you, I'd see a doctor. |
| It's a good idea to … | A suggestion; translated synonymously with should | It's a good idea to rest → You should rest. |
| …, or (else) … | Reveals had better's implicit consequence | Hurry, or you'll be late → You'd better hurry. |
| the right thing to do | Invokes ought to's moral tone | Apologizing is the right thing to do. |
| by now / already | Past expectation/regret with should have | They should have finished by now. |
Kesinlik/güç sıralaması (zayıftan güçlüye, kabaca): could/might (çok yumuşak öneri) < should ≈ ought to < had better < must/have to (zorunluluk). had better bu yüzden tavsiye ile zorunluluk arasında bir köprüdür — tavsiyedir ama itaat edilmezse sonucu ima eder.
Nezaket ayarı: Doğrudan "You should…" bazı bağlamlarda fazla direktif kaçabilir. Onu yumuşatmak için Maybe you should…, I think you should…, You might want to… kullanılır.
Although all three structures fall under the heading of "advice", they differ inforce, perspective, and politeness.should politely presents the speaker's personal opinion ("in my view").ought to frames the opinion as an external, objective truth ("this is the commonly accepted truth").had better turns advice into a kind of implicit threat — so it's natural for a superior to say to a subordinate, or a parent to a child, but the reverse can sound rude.
Certainty/force ranking (roughly, from weak to strong):could/might (a very soft suggestion) <should ≈ ought to < had better < must/have to (obligation). had better is therefore a bridge between advice and obligation — it's advice, but it implies a consequence if not obeyed.
Politeness tuning:A direct "You should…" can sound too directive in some contexts. To soften it, expressions likeMaybe you should…, I think you should…, You might want to… are used. These softeners matter especially in business correspondence and when talking to someone you don't know.
- Türkçe "-meli" = tavsiye ise → İngilizce should. ("Dinlenmelisin" = You should rest.)
- Türkçe "-meli" = zorunluluk ise → İngilizce must / have to. ("Pasaport göstermelisin" = You must show your passport.) — bkz. Zorunluluk (must / have to).
- Türkçede tavsiyeyi soru yapmak için "…sam mı?" deriz → İngilizce Should I…? ("Gitsem mi?" = Should I go?)
- Türkçedeki "…sa iyi olur" kalıbı çoğu zaman had better'a denk gelir. ("Acele etsen iyi olur" = You'd better hurry.)
- Türkçede "-meliydin" (geçmiş pişmanlık) → İngilizce should have + V3. ("Söylemeliydin" = You should have told me.)
In Turkish, both advice and obligation are usually built with the same-meli / -malı suffix: the sentence "Doktora gitmelisin" can be, depending on context, both a polite suggestion and a firm obligation. English splits these two meanings intodifferent words. This structural difference is the biggest trap for a learner translating word-for-word from Turkish.
- If the Turkish "-meli" = advice → Englishshould. ("Dinlenmelisin" = You should rest.)
- If the Turkish "-meli" = obligation → Englishmust / have to. ("Pasaport göstermelisin" = You must show your passport.) — seeNecessity (must / have to).
- To turn advice into a question in Turkish we say "…sam mı?" → EnglishShould I…? ("Gitsem mi?" = Should I go?)
- The Turkish pattern "…sa iyi olur" oftenhad bettercorresponds to. ("Acele etsen iyi olur" = You'd better hurry.)
- In Turkish "-meliydin" (past regret) → Englishshould have + V3. ("Söylemeliydin" = You should have told me.)
Tavsiye modallerini, komşu anlam alanlarındaki yapılarla karıştırmamak gerekir. En tehlikeli komşu, güçlü zorunluluk anlatan must / have to'dur (zorunluluk modalleri): ikisi de Türkçeye "-meli" olarak çevrildiği için öğrenci sınırı göremez. İkinci komşu, dolaylı ve çok nazik tavsiye kuran If I were you, I'd… kalıbıdır; bu aslında bir ikinci tip koşul cümlesidir, ayrı bir gramer yapısıdır.
|---|---|---|---|
| should / ought to | tavsiye, öneri | orta (nazik) | You should rest. |
| had better | uyarılı tavsiye | orta-yüksek | You'd better rest. |
| must / have to | zorunluluk (bkz. Zorunluluk (must / have to)) | yüksek | You must rest (doctor's order). |
| If I were you, I'd… | dolaylı tavsiye (2. koşul, bkz. Koşul: Type 2) | orta (çok nazik) | If I were you, I'd rest. |
| could / might | olası öneri, seçenek sunma | düşük | You could rest for a while. |
You must not confuse advice modals with structures in neighbouring meaning areas. The most dangerous neighbour ismust / have to; see (necessity modals): because both translate into Turkish as "-meli", learners can't see the boundary. The second neighbour, which builds indirect and very polite advice, isIf I were you, I'd…; this is actually asecond conditional sentence, a separate grammar structure. The third is the soft, option-offeringcould / might: rather than advice, it says 'here's another way'. The table below clarifies the meaning and force boundaries of these four neighbours side by side; picture this table when eliminating options in an exam.
| Structure | Meaning | Force | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| should / ought to | advice, suggestion | medium (polite) | You should rest. |
| had better | advice with a warning | medium-high | You'd better rest. |
| must / have to | necessity (seeNecessity (must / have to)) | high | You must rest (doctor's order). |
| If I were you, I'd… | indirect advice (2nd conditional, seeConditional: Type 2) | medium (very polite) | If I were you, I'd rest. |
| could / might | possible suggestion, offering an option | low | You could rest for a while. |
Birkaç kalıp, tavsiye modallerinin genel kurallarının dışına çıkar ya da onları beklenmedik anlamlarda kullanır. Bunlar sınavlarda ve gerçek metinlerde sık karşınıza çıkar.
A few patterns fall outside the general rules of advice modals or use them in unexpected meanings. These come up often in exams and real texts.
Akademik ve resmi yazıda should ve ought to öneri sunmak için kullanılır ama kişisel "you should" hitabından kaçınılır; bunun yerine it is advisable to, one should, governments should gibi nesnel özneler tercih edilir. had better resmi yazıda neredeyse hiç kullanılmaz — fazla gündelik ve tehditkârdır.
- 'should consider', 'should be revised' — nesnel, kurumsal öznelerle resmi öneri.
- 'ought to be tested' — should ile eş işlev, ton çeşitliliği sağlar.
- 'should then be re-tested' — öneriyi zincirleme sürdürme; akademik akıl yürütmede sık.
- 'should have involved' — geçmişe yönelik eleştiri; akademik yazıda pişmanlık değil, değerlendirme tonundadır.
- 'no campaign should promise' — olumsuz genel ilke; 'you shouldn't' yerine nesnel özne.
In academic and formal writing, should andought to are used to offer suggestions, but the personal "you should" address is avoided; instead, objective subjects likeit is advisable to, one should, governments should are preferred.had better is almost never used in formal writing — it's too casual and threatening.
- 'should consider', 'should be revised' — formal suggestion with objective, institutional subjects.
- 'ought to be tested' — same function as should, provides tonal variety.
- 'should then be re-tested' — continuing the suggestion in a chain; common in academic reasoning.
- 'should have involved' — past-oriented criticism; in academic writing it has an evaluative, not regretful, tone.
- 'no campaign should promise' — a negative general principle; an objective subject instead of 'you shouldn't'.
- had better never appears in this paragraph — it's avoided in formal writing for being too casual and threatening.
- 'You should take' — dolaysız, iyi niyetli öneri (abla).
- 'she ought to think about the cost' — nesnel bir gereklilik, kişinin kendi muhakemesi.
- 'You shouldn't decide when you're this tired' — olumsuz tavsiye, koşula bağlı (arkadaş).
- 'You'd better decide by Friday, or…' — had better + or ile uyarı, örtük sonuç açıkça veriliyor (baba).
- 'she should have started… months ago' — geçmişe yönelik pişmanlık.
- 'I should have asked… shouldn't have ignored' — iki geçmiş biçimi yan yana: yapılmayana pişmanlık + yapılana pişmanlık.
- 'I shouldn't rush… I really ought to trust' — kendine öğüt; olumsuz should + nesnel ought to birlikte.
- 'should give advice, but shouldn't make the choice' — metnin ana fikrini taşıyan karşıtlık.
- 'You should take' — direct, well-meaning suggestion (the sister).
- 'she ought to think about the cost' — an objective requirement, the person's own reasoning.
- 'You shouldn't decide when you're this tired' — negative advice, conditional (the friend).
- 'You'd better decide by Friday, or…' — a warning with had better + or, the implicit consequence made explicit (the father).
- 'she should have started… months ago' — past-oriented regret.
- 'I should have asked… shouldn't have ignored' — two past forms side by side: regret over what wasn't done + regret over what was done.
- 'I shouldn't rush… I really ought to trust' — advice to oneself; negative should + objective ought to together.
- 'should give advice, but shouldn't make the choice' — the contrast that carries the text's main idea.

- "You'd better apologize."
- "I should have called her." — Konuşmacı onu aradı mı?Hayır, aramadı. should have + V3 yapılmamış doğru eylemi anlatır; burada pişmanlık vardır.
- "The parcel should arrive tomorrow." — Bu bir tavsiye mi?Hayır. Burada should tavsiye değil, makul beklenti/tahmin bildirir: 'yarın gelmesi bekleniyor.'
- "You shouldn't have!"
- "You must see a doctor" ile "You should see a doctor" arasındaki fark nedir?'must' zorunluluk (seçim yok, ör. doktorun kesin talimatı), 'should' tavsiye (seçim sende, iyi niyetli öneri). Detay: Zorunluluk (must / have to).
The questions below test not rote rules butmeaning. Read the sentence, think about what it implies, then reveal the answer.

- Rehber soru 4: Geçmişte ne yapmalıydı? (should have)
(ought to)
Task:A friend of yours is very stressed studying for exams and keeps procrastinating. Write them anat least 5-sentence advice message. Use all four structures:should, ought to, had better, should haveand at least onenegative (shouldn't / had better not).
- Guiding question 1: What is your first, most general advice? (start with should)
- Guiding question 2: Say something they should avoid. (shouldn't)
- Guiding question 3: What happens if they're late — give a warning. (had better / or…)
- Guiding question 4: What should they have done in the past? (should have)
- Guiding question 5: Add advice in a 'this is the right thing' tone. (ought to)
Kavram kontrol soruları (kural sorma, anlam sor): "'You'd better go' — bu sadece tavsiye mi, yoksa bir uyarı da var mı?" (Uyarı var.) "'I should have studied' — kişi çalıştı mı?" (Hayır.) "'You should show your passport' vs 'You must show your passport' — hangisi seçim bırakır?" (should.) Bu tür sorular ezberi değil kavrayışı ölçer.
Etkinlik önerisi — 'Tavsiye Kliniği': Öğrenciler küçük kâğıtlara birer 'sorun' yazar ("I can't sleep", "I'm always late", "I spend too much money"). Kâğıtlar karışır, herkes çektiği soruna üç farklı tavsiye üretir: biri should, biri ought to, biri had better ile. İleri sınıflarda 'Maybe you should / You might want to' inceltmelerini de ekletebilirsiniz.
Concept-check questions (don't ask the rule, ask the meaning): "'You'd better go' — is this just advice, or is there also a warning?" (There's a warning.) "'I should have studied' — did the person study?" (No.) "'You should show your passport' vs 'You must show your passport' — which leaves a choice?" (should.) Questions like these measure understanding, not memorisation.
Activity suggestion — 'Advice Clinic': Students write a 'problem' on small slips of paper ("I can't sleep", "I'm always late", "I spend too much money"). The slips are shuffled, and everyone produces three different pieces of advice for the problem they draw: one with should, one with ought to, one with had better. Then they discuss which tone best fits the problem — this gives a feel for the force/politeness difference. In advanced classes you can also have them add the 'Maybe you should / You might want to' softeners.
- should tavsiyenin varsayılan yapısıdır: nazik, nötr, çok yönlü. ought to aynı anlamı biraz daha resmi/nesnel verir.
- had better ('d better) tavsiye + uyarıdır: 'yap, yoksa kötü olur.' Yakın geleceğe bakar; genel yaşam tavsiyesi için uygun değildir.
- Modalden sonra fiil yalındır (to yok), çekilmez (-s yok): should go, He ought to go.
- Olumsuzlar: shouldn't, ought not to (nadir), had better not (not, better'dan sonra).
- Soru: modal öne gelir — Should I…? — 'do' kullanılmaz.
- Geçmiş: should have + V3 = pişmanlık/eleştiri; shouldn't have + V3 = yapılan yanlışa pişmanlık.
- En büyük tuzak: Türkçe '-meli' hem tavsiye hem zorunluluktur; tavsiye için should, zorunluluk için must/have to (Zorunluluk (must / have to)).
- 'should of' YANLIŞ; doğrusu should have / should've. İki modal yan yana gelmez (should must ✗).
- Güç sıralaması: could/might < should ≈ ought to < had better < must. Nezaket için 'Maybe you should…' kullan.
- should is the default advice structure: polite, neutral, versatile.ought to gives the same meaning a bit more formally/objectively.
- had better ('d better) is advice + warning: 'do it, or it'll be bad.' It looks to the near future; not suitable for general life advice.
- After a modal, the verb isbase(no to),are not conjugated(no -s):should go, He ought to go.
- Negatives:shouldn't, ought not to(rare),had better not(not, after better).
- Question: the modal comes first —Should I…? — no 'do'.
- Past:should have + V3 = regret/criticism;shouldn't have + V3 = regret over a wrong that was done.
- The biggest trap: the Turkish '-meli' is both advice and obligation; for advice, should, for obligation,must/have to (Necessity (must / have to)).
- 'should of' is WRONG; the correct form isshould have / should've. Two modals can't stand together (should must ✗).
- Force ranking: could/might < should ≈ ought to < had better < must. For politeness, use 'Maybe you should…'.
