Second Conditional, İngilizcede hayal kurmanın, varsayım yapmanın ve gerçekleşmesi zor bir şeyi zihinde canlandırmanın dilidir. Şu an var olan gerçeğin tersini düşünürüz: If I were rich... (aslında zengin değilim), If I had a car...
Aslında öyle değil: I'm not rich. I don't have a car.Hayali karşıtı (Type 2)
If I were rich, I would travel the world. — if + past, would + fiilPeki bu yapı neden var? Çünkü insan sürekli "ya şöyle olsaydı?" diye düşünür. Karar verirken (If I took that job...), tavsiye verirken (If I were you...), pişmanlığa yakın bir özlem duyarken (If only I lived by the sea...) hep bu hayal kipine ihtiyaç duyarız.
İngilizce tam olarak aynı şeyi yapar: If I were rich, I would buy a house. "-se/-sa" kısmı if + past, "-erdi/-ardı" kısmı ise would + fiil.
Gerçekten olması muhtemel gelecek için First Conditional kullanılır; ikisinin farkını 12. bölümde ayrıntısıyla göreceğiz.
The Second Conditional is the language of daydreaming, making assumptions and picturing in the mind something that is hard to come true in English. We think of the opposite of the reality that exists now: If I were rich... (I'm actually not rich), If I had a car... (I actually don't have a car). So the sentence describes not a fact but the imaginary opposite of that fact.
Reality (now)
It's actually not so: I'm not rich. I don't have a car.Imaginary opposite (Type 2)
If I were rich, I would travel the world. — if + past, would + verbSo why does this structure exist? Because people constantly think "what if it were like this?". When making a decision (If I took that job...), giving advice (If I were you...), or feeling a longing close to regret (If only I lived by the sea...), we always need this imaginative mood. English marks it with a separate grammar pattern, so that real plans and imaginary plans don't get mixed up.
For a Turkish speaker the logic is actually familiar. In Turkish we say "Zengin olsam bir ev alırdım" — here "olsam" describes a situation that does not really exist, and "alırdım" describes its imaginary result. English does exactly the same thing: If I were rich, I would buy a house. The "-se/-sa" part is if + past, and the "-erdi/-ardı" part is would + verb.
The "hard" side of the topic is exactly here. When Turkish learners see past forms like spoke and were, they think the sentence means "it happened in the past". But in the Second Conditional the past-tense form shows not time but unreality (distance). So grasping the logic of "past appearance = imaginary present" is the key to this topic. For a future that is genuinely likely, the First Conditional is used; we will see the difference between the two in detail in section 12.
- Second Conditional, şu an veya gelecekteki gerçek-dışı / hayali durumları anlatır.
- Kalıp: If + Past Simple, ... would + fiilin yalın hâli (V1).
- be fiili için resmî ve doğru biçim were'dür — her özne için: If I were, if he were...
- Tavsiye vermenin klasik kalıbı: If I were you, I would...
- would yerine anlam gereği could (imkân) veya might (zayıf ihtimal) gelebilir.
- İki cümleciğin sırası serbesttir; ana cümle başa gelirse virgül kalkar: I would help if I could.
- Gerçekçi gelecek planı için First Conditional (if + present, will) kullanılır.
- The Second Conditional describes unreal / imaginary situations in the present or future.
- Pattern: If + Past Simple, ... would + base form of the verb (V1).
- The "past form" here shows NOT the real past but an imaginary present.
- Its Turkish equivalent is usually the logic of "...-se ...-erdi" and "keşke ...-se".
- For the verb be, the formal and correct form is were — for every subject: If I were, if he were...
- The classic pattern for giving advice: If I were you, I would...
- Depending on the meaning, could (possibility) or might (weak probability) can replace would.
- The order of the two clauses is free; if the main clause comes first, the comma disappears: I would help if I could.
- For a realistic future plan, the First Conditional (if + present, will) is used.
- For the imaginary opposite of a finished past situation, the Third Conditional is used.
Olumlu (Affirmative)
Temel formül: If + özne + Past Simple, özne + would + fiilin yalın hâli. Koşul kısmında fiil geçmiş biçimindedir ama anlam şimdi/gelecektir; sonuç kısmında ise would + fiilin sözlük hâli (V1) gelir. would her özne için aynıdır — -s almaz.
Olumsuz (Negative)
İki yerde de olumsuzluk yapılabilir. Koşulda didn't + fiil (be için weren't), sonuçta wouldn't + fiil kullanılır. Hangi tarafı olumsuz yaptığın anlamı değiştirir; ikisini karıştırma.
Soru (Question)
Soru genelde sonuç kısmında kurulur: would + özne + fiil ... if + Past Simple? En sık kalıp "What would you do if...?" (Ne yapardın ...-se?) biçimindedir. İç koşulu sorgulamak için de "Would it help if...?" denebilir.
Kısa Cevaplar
| Soru / Yapı | Kısa Cevap / Kısaltma | Açıklama |
|---|---|---|
| Would you help me if I asked? | Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn't. | Cevap ana fiili tekrarlamaz, sadece would ile verilir. |
| I would (do it). | I'd (do it). | would konuşmada 'd olarak kısalır: I'd, you'd, she'd. |
| I would not / could not | I wouldn't / couldn't | Olumsuz kısaltma standarttır. |
| If I were you... | (kısaltılmaz) | were burada kısalmaz; dilek kipi tam yazılır. |
Affirmative
Basic formula: If + subject + Past Simple, subject + would + base form of the verb. In the conditional part the verb is in the past form but the meaning is present/future; in the result part comes would + the dictionary form of the verb (V1). would is the same for every subject — it takes no -s.
Negative
You can make either part negative. In the condition use didn't + verb (weren't for be), and in the result wouldn't + verb. Which side you make negative changes the meaning; don't confuse the two.
Question
The question is usually formed in the result part: would + subject + verb ... if + Past Simple? The most common pattern is "What would you do if...?". To question the condition itself, you can also say "Would it help if...?".
Short Answers
| Question / Structure | Short answer / Contraction | Explanation |
|---|---|---|
| Would you help me if I asked? | Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn't. | The answer does not repeat the main verb; it is given only with would. |
| I would (do it). | I'd (do it). | would contracts to 'd in speech: I'd, you'd, she'd. |
| I would not / could not | I wouldn't / couldn't | The negative contraction is standard. |
| If I were you... | (not contracted) | were is not contracted here; the subjunctive is written in full. |
Bu yüzden Second Conditional cümlesinin arkasında hep sessiz bir gerçek yatar: If I were taller... demek "aslında uzun değilim" demektir.
2) Tavsiye Vermek: If I were you...
Tavsiyede özne ne olursa olsun were kullanılır: If I were you, I would apologise.
İngilizcede tavsiyenin en doğal yolu "If I were you, I would..." kalıbıdır. "Senin yerinde olsam..." anlamı taşır ve doğrudan emirden çok daha kibardır. Burada were kullanmak neredeyse zorunludur; If I was you günlük konuşmada duyulsa da tavsiyede standart biçim were'dür.
Bu yüzden resmî ortamlarda doğrudan sormak yerine hayali bir çerçeve tercih edilir: Would it be possible if...?
5) Sonucu Öğüt/İhtimal Olarak Yumuşatma (could / might)
Sonuç kesin değilse would yerine could (imkân/yetenek) veya might (zayıf ihtimal) kullanılır.
1) The Imaginary Opposite of Present Reality (most common)
The most basic use is to imagine the opposite of a situation that exists now. If the reality is negative the sentence is affirmative, and if the reality is affirmative the sentence is negative. That is why a silent fact always lies behind a Second Conditional sentence: saying If I were taller... means "I'm actually not tall".
2) Giving Advice: If I were you...
In advice, were is used whatever the subject: If I were you, I would apologise.
The most natural way to give advice in English is the "If I were you, I would..." pattern. It means "If I were in your place..." and is far more polite than a direct order. Using were here is almost obligatory; although If I was you is heard in everyday speech, the standard form in advice is were.
3) Daydreaming and Fantasy
The Second Conditional is ideal for dreams that are very hard or impossible to come true: the lottery, superpowers, meeting a celebrity. The speaker knows it won't happen; the structure carries this "distance".
4) Polite and Distanced Request / Suggestion
The "distance" created by the past form makes a request softer and more polite. That is why, in formal settings, an imaginary frame is preferred instead of asking directly: Would it be possible if...? This use is especially common in business and service language.
5) Softening the Result into Advice/Possibility (could / might)
If the result is not certain, could (possibility/ability) or might (weak probability) is used instead of would. This way, instead of "it would definitely happen" you say "it could happen / it might happen". At C1 level this distinction is an important tool for refining style.
|---|---|---|
| If I were you, ... | Tavsiye | If I were you, I'd rest. |
| Imagine / Suppose / What if ... | Hayali senaryo başlatır | Imagine you won. What would you buy? |
| What would you do if ...? | Hayal sorusu | What would you do if you had a week off? |
| Even if ... | Koşula rağmen | Even if I had time, I wouldn't go. |
| would / could / might | Hayali sonuç kipi | I would / could / might come. |
| If only + past ... / I wish | Dilek, özlem | If only I had a bigger house. |
The Second Conditional has no list of "time adverbs"; its real marker is unreality. Still, some words and patterns call for this structure. But beware: these clues are not a guarantee — the same words can be used with other moods too.
| Signal / Pattern | Function | Example |
|---|---|---|
| If I were you, ... | Advice | If I were you, I'd rest. |
| Imagine / Suppose / What if ... | Starts an imaginary scenario | Imagine you won. What would you buy? |
| What would you do if ...? | An imagination question | What would you do if you had a week off? |
| Even if ... | Despite the condition | Even if I had time, I wouldn't go. |
| would / could / might | The imaginary-result modal | I would / could / might come. |
| If only + past ... / I wish | Wish, longing | If only I had a bigger house. |
Kesinlik ve ihtimal: sonuç kısmındaki kip, sonucun ne kadar kesin olduğunu ayarlar. would "olurdu" (güçlü), could "olabilirdi" (imkân), might "belki olurdu" (zayıf). Böylece tek bir koşuldan üç farklı kesinlik derecesi çıkar.
Nezaket ve mesafe: geçmiş biçimin yarattığı uzaklık, isteği ve fikri yumuşatır. "I would say..."
The Second Conditional is not just a grammar pattern but a tool for perspective. The speaker chooses to frame a situation as "unlikely / not real". The same event can be told with either First or Second; the difference lies in the speaker's belief about it. That is why the choice of structure is often a matter of attitude, not grammar.
Certainty and probability: the modal in the result adjusts how certain the outcome is. would = "would happen" (strong), could = "could happen" (possibility), might = "might happen" (weak). Thus a single condition yields three different degrees of certainty.
Politeness and distance: the distance created by the past form softens a request or an opinion. "I would say..." is more cautious and polite than a direct "I think". That is why the Second Conditional frame is widely used when giving an opinion in academic and professional language.
İyi haber: Second Conditional'ın mantığı Türkçeye çok yakındır. Türkçede "...-se/-sa" (koşul) + "...-erdi/-ardı" (hayali sonuç) yapısı, İngilizcedeki if + past + would + fiil yapısıyla neredeyse birebir örtüşür. "Zengin olsam bir ev alırdım" = "If I were rich, I would buy a house."
- Türkçe "-se/-sa" → İngilizce koşulda Past Simple (had, went, were).
- Türkçe "-erdi/-ardı" → İngilizce sonuçta would + fiil.
- Türkçe "keşke ...-se" özlemi → İngilizcede çoğu zaman wish / if only ile karşılanır.
- Türkçede tek fiil çekimi işi görür; İngilizcede iki ayrı işaret gerekir: geçmiş biçim + would.
- Türkçede "olsam" ile "oldum" apayrıdır; İngilizcede were/was hem gerçek geçmiş hem hayali olabilir — bağlam ayırır.
Good news: the logic of the Second Conditional is very close to Turkish. In Turkish the "...-se/-sa" (condition) + "...-erdi/-ardı" (imaginary result) structure overlaps almost exactly with the English if + past + would + verb structure. "Zengin olsam bir ev alırdım" = "If I were rich, I would buy a house."
- Turkish "-se/-sa" → Past Simple in the English condition (had, went, were).
- Turkish "-erdi/-ardı" → would + verb in the English result.
- The Turkish longing "keşke ...-se" → is usually expressed in English with wish / if only.
- In Turkish a single verb inflection does the job; in English two separate markers are needed: the past form + would.
- In Turkish "olsam" and "oldum" are quite distinct; in English were/was can be both a real past and imaginary — context tells them apart.
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero | Genel gerçek / her zaman doğru | present | present | If you heat ice, it melts. |
| First | Gerçekçi, olası gelecek | present | will + V1 | If it rains, I will stay home. |
| Second | Hayali / gerçek-dışı şimdi-gelecek | past | would + V1 | If it rained, I would stay home. |
| Third | Geçmişteki hayali (olmadı-bitti) | had + V3 | would have + V3 | If it had rained, I would have stayed home. |
The Second Conditional is most often confused with the First Conditional and the Third Conditional. The difference is not time but usually the degree of reality and probability. The table below places the four conditional types side by side.
| Type | Meaning | Condition part | Result part | Example |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero | General truth / always true | present | present | If you heat ice, it melts. |
| First | Realistic, likely future | present | will + V1 | If it rains, I will stay home. |
| Second | Imaginary / unreal present-future | past | would + V1 | If it rained, I would stay home. |
| Third | Imaginary in the past (didn't happen) | had + V3 | would have + V3 | If it had rained, I would have stayed home. |
In short: for a future that can really happen, the First Conditional; for an unlikely or unreal present/future, the Second; for the imaginary opposite of a finished, no-longer-changeable past situation, the Third Conditional. For pure wishes and regrets, wish / if only is a separate door.
Genel kural (if + past, would + fiil) sağlamdır, ama birkaç özel durum vardır. Bunları bilmek C1'de üslubu inceltir.
1) 'if ... would' — nezaket istisnası
Kural olarak koşulda would yasaktır; fakat çok kibar ricalarda "if you would..." bir nezaket kalıbı olarak kullanılır. Burada would gelecek değil, isteklilik/rica bildirir: If you would kindly wait here... Bu, günlük gramerle çelişmez çünkü işlev farklıdır.
2) was / were seçimi
Resmî ve doğru biçim her özne için were'dür, ama günlük konuşmada I was / he was de yaygındır. Tek istisna "If I were you" gibi kalıplaşmış ifadelerdir — burada was kulağı tırmalar, her zaman were denir.
3) Resmî devrik yapı (inversion)
Resmî yazıda if düşürülüp were öne alınabilir: Were I to accept the offer, I would relocate. = If I accepted the offer...
If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now.
The general rule (if + past, would + verb) is solid, but there are a few special cases. Knowing them refines your style at C1.
1) 'if ... would' — the politeness exception
As a rule, would is forbidden in the condition; but in very polite requests "if you would..." is used as a politeness pattern. Here would means not the future but willingness/request: If you would kindly wait here... This does not contradict everyday grammar because the function is different.
2) The was / were choice
The formal and correct form is were for every subject, but in everyday speech I was / he was is also common. The only exception is set phrases like "If I were you" — here was grates on the ear, and were is always said.
3) Formal inverted structure (inversion)
In formal writing, if can be dropped and were brought to the front: Were I to accept the offer, I would relocate. = If I accepted the offer... This structure belongs to academic and literary texts and has a formal, slightly old-fashioned tone.
4) Connection to the mixed conditional
Sometimes Second and Third mix in order to express the present result of an imaginary past event: If I had studied medicine, I would be a doctor now. (The condition is past — Third form; the result is present — Second form.) This "mixed conditional" is an advanced topic; it is covered in detail on the Third Conditional page.
Günlük konuşmada Second Conditional çok sık geçer ve genellikle kısaltmalarla akar: I'd, you'd, he'd, we'd, they'd (= would) ve 'd düşüşleriyle. Aşağıdaki diyalog tipik bir sohbeti gösteriyor.
In everyday speech the Second Conditional appears very often and usually flows with contractions: I'd, you'd, he'd, we'd, they'd (= would) and 'd reductions. The dialogue below shows a typical conversation.
Akademik yazıda Second Conditional, varsayım kurmak, sonuç tahmin etmek ve iddiayı temkinli sunmak için kullanılır. "would" yazarın kesin konuşmaktan kaçınmasını (hedging) sağlar; bu, bilimsel üslupta değer verilen bir ölçülülüktür. Resmî metinlerde were to ve devrik Were... yapıları da görülür.
- "If interest rates fell... borrowing would increase" — klasik akademik varsayım kalıbı.
- "the past-tense form here signals a projection" — geçmiş biçimin zaman değil gerçek-dışılık gösterdiği vurgusu.
- "would suggests confidence, could/might leave room for doubt" — kip seçiminin kesinlik derecesini ayarlaması.
- "Were the policy to change..." — if'siz resmî devrik yapı örneği.
In academic writing, the Second Conditional is used to form assumptions, predict outcomes and present a claim cautiously. "would" lets the writer avoid speaking with certainty (hedging); this is a restraint that is valued in scientific style. In formal texts, were to and inverted Were... structures also appear.
- "If interest rates fell... borrowing would increase" — a classic academic assumption pattern.
- "the past-tense form here signals a projection" — emphasis that the past form shows unreality, not time.
- "would suggests confidence, could/might leave room for doubt" — how the choice of modal adjusts the degree of certainty.
- "Were the policy to change..." — an example of the formal inverted structure without if.
- hedging: the writer speaking cautiously by avoiding certainty is valued in academic language.
- Conclusion: the Second Conditional is a tool that marks the boundary between the real and the imaginary.
- "If she had a little more courage, she would quit" — gerçek-dışı şimdi: aslında cesareti yok.
- "If she saved a bit, she could open" — could ile imkân; kesin değil.
- "If I were braver, I wouldn't wait" — were + wouldn't; sabit hayali çerçeve.
- "If the shop failed, she would lose her savings" — hayali olumsuz sonuç senaryosu.
- "What would her parents say if she gave up...?" — ana cümle soru, koşul past.
- "if the rent were reasonable" — be için were; her özne.
- "if a friend agreed to help — then... she would take the leap" — zincirlenmiş çoklu koşul.
- "If she truly wanted a safe life, she wouldn't spend..." — kapanışta gerçeğin hayali tersi: aslında sıradan hayat istemiyor.
- "If she had a little more courage, she would quit" — unreal present: she actually doesn't have the courage.
- "If she saved a bit, she could open" — possibility with could; not certain.
- "If I were braver, I wouldn't wait" — were + wouldn't; a fixed imaginary frame.
- "If the shop failed, she would lose her savings" — an imaginary negative-outcome scenario.
- "What would her parents say if she gave up...?" — the main clause a question, the condition past.
- "if the rent were reasonable" — were for be; every subject.
- "if a friend agreed to help — then... she would take the leap" — chained multiple conditions.
- "If she truly wanted a safe life, she wouldn't spend..." — the imaginary opposite of reality at the close: she actually doesn't want an ordinary life.

Görev: "If I could change one thing about my daily life..." (Günlük hayatımda bir şeyi değiştirebilseydim...) başlığıyla 6-8 cümlelik bir paragraf yaz. En az 4 Second Conditional cümlesi kullan; içlerinden biri If I were..., biri de could/might içersin.
- Rehber soru 1: Şu an hayatında seni rahatsız eden gerçek nedir? (Örn. çok az uyuyorum.)
- Rehber soru 2: O gerçek tersine dönse ne olurdu? (If I slept more, I would...)
- Rehber soru 3: Kendine hangi tavsiyeyi verirdin? (If I were more disciplined, I would...)
- Rehber soru 4: Emin olmadığın bir sonucu could/might ile yaz. (I might feel...)
- Kontrol: Hiçbir 'if' cümleciğinin içinde would VAR MI? Varsa düzelt.
Task: Write a paragraph of 6-8 sentences titled "If I could change one thing about my daily life...". Use at least 4 Second Conditional sentences; one of them should contain If I were... and another could/might.
- Guiding question 1: What is a reality in your life right now that bothers you? (e.g. I sleep too little.)
- Guiding question 2: What would happen if that reality were reversed? (If I slept more, I would...)
- Guiding question 3: What advice would you give yourself? (If I were more disciplined, I would...)
- Guiding question 4: Write an outcome you're not sure about with could/might. (I might feel...)
- Check: Is there any would inside an 'if' clause? If so, fix it.
Kavram kontrolü için (CCQ) şu soruları kullan: 'If I had a car...' cümlesinde — Do I have a car now? (No.) Is this real or imaginary? (Imaginary.) Is it about the past? (No, it's about now.)
Sık düzeltmen gereken tek hata neredeyse hep aynıdır: "if ... would". Bir sınıf sözleşmesi yap: "if" ile aynı cümlecikte would görürsek beraber sileceğiz. Ayrıca were kuralını 'If I were you' gibi tek bir güçlü kalıpla çıpalamak, öğrencinin diğer öznelerde de were'ü hatırlamasını kolaylaştırır.
For concept checking (CCQ) use these questions: in the sentence 'If I had a car...' — Do I have a car now? (No.) Is this real or imaginary? (Imaginary.) Is it about the past? (No, it's about now.) These three questions firmly establish the idea "past form = imaginary present" and prevent the biggest misunderstanding (past = past tense).
The one mistake you'll need to correct most often is almost always the same: "if ... would". Make a class agreement: if we see would in the same clause as "if", we'll delete it together. Also, anchoring the were rule with a single strong pattern like 'If I were you' makes it easier for the student to remember were with other subjects too.
- Second Conditional = şu an/gelecekteki gerçek-dışı, hayali durum.
- Kalıp: If + Past Simple, ... would + V1 — koşulda geçmiş biçim, sonuçta would.
- Geçmiş biçim zamanı değil, gerçeklikten uzaklığı gösterir ("olsam" mantığı).
- Koşul kısmında would ASLA yer almaz — bir numaralı hatadan kaçın.
- be için resmî ve doğru biçim were; özellikle If I were you tavsiyesinde.
- Sonuçta anlama göre would (güçlü), could (imkân), might (zayıf ihtimal).
- Ana cümle başa gelirse virgül kalkar: I'd help if I could.
- Test: "Gerçekten olabilir mi?" Evet → First (will); hayal → Second (would).
- Geçmişteki olmuş-bitmiş varsayım için Third Conditional; saf dilek için wish / if only.
- The Second Conditional = an unreal, imaginary situation in the present/future.
- Pattern: If + Past Simple, ... would + V1 — the past form in the condition, would in the result.
- The past form shows not time but distance from reality (the "olsam" logic).
- would NEVER appears in the conditional part — avoid the number-one mistake.
- For be, the formal and correct form is were; especially in the If I were you advice.
- In the result, according to meaning: would (strong), could (possibility), might (weak probability).
- If the main clause comes first, the comma disappears: I'd help if I could.
- Test: "Can this really happen?" Yes → First (will); imaginary → Second (would).
- For a finished past hypothesis, the Third Conditional; for a pure wish, wish / if only.
